LIFE IS A BLAST! Minuteman to Ministry A Pastor Looks Back on His Life And Anticipates the Future! by Pastor Cecil Thompson Life starts for everyone at the moment of birth. What a profound statement! It is what we do with that life that counts. To ask the question, “How in the world did I get here?” Seems to demand another question, “Where is here?” Here is where we happen to be at this very moment. It is not a particular age or a particular achievement. It is where we are right now. I have been writing for many years but most of it has been unrelated to specific periods of time. You might say it has been a recounting of random thoughts, stories, illustrations, and memories. Someone much wiser than me as suggested that while there is still time I need to put down some of the things that I have done that will not be remembered after I’m gone. Isn’t that a cheerful thought?! And so my story begins. This little boy who was stuck with the name Junior was about to enter life and have the most wonderful experience that can even be imagined. Yes I had many disciplines along the way, but as I look back they were all deserved, and a few I got away with. Please fasten your seat belt and take this trip with me. Pastor Cecil A. Thompson

A timely rags-to-riches story, The Merchant of Power recounts how Sam Insull--right hand to Thomas Edison--went on to become one of the richest men in the world, pivotal in the birth of General Electric and instrumental in the creation of the modern metropolis with his invention of the power grid, which still fuels major cities today. John Wasik, awarded the National Press Club Award for Consumer Journalism, had unprecedented access to Sam Insull's archives, which include private correspondence with Thomas Edison. The extraordinary fall of a man extraordinary for his time is revealed in this cautionary tale about the excesses of corporate power.

The Merchant of Power: Sam Insull, Thomas Edison, and the Creation of the Modern Metropolis, by John F. Wasik

From Publishers Weekly Sam Insull is the forgotten energy tycoon of the early 20th century. As Wasik, a columnist for Bloomberg News, relates, Insull came to America from England in 1881 with $200 in his pocket to be Thomas Edison's private secretary and died in a Paris metro station in 1938 with 84 cents in his pocket. In between, he helped Edison light up New York and moved to Chicago, where he built a corporate empire that raised his personal worth to over $150 million ($1.7 billion in today's dollars); then he lost everything in the Great Depression. The collapse of his companies made him the bête noire of thousands of his now destitute Chicago shareholders and, according to the author, a model for Orson Welles's Citizen Kane. Wasik notes that Insull was instrumental in two fundamental shifts in American history: first, his innovations in the delivery of electric power made possible the consumer age; second, the failure of his financial empire became a basis for the New Deal laws that now govern much of corporate America. Wasik writes well, and Insull is a complex man whose life and times make worthwhile reading. B&w photos. (Mar. 16) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Review "Brilliant . . . brings Insull back to complicated life, and should revive interest in a forgotten giant."--Chicago Sun-Times "[A] focused look at one of the most interesting historical figures you've never heard of . . . a fascinating cautionary tale."--Fortune "Does a fine job of telling the early story of utilities, moguls and scandal."--Chicago Tribune "One of the most magnetic and powerful con artists of the Great Depression was Sam Insull. Patron of the arts, philanthropist and Thomas Edison's right hand, he shafted thousands of investors large and small. . . . I found the work of John Wasik not only personally enthralling but an informal history of that traumatic time."--Studs Terkel "[A] bittersweet biography of one of the titans of American industry, business and finance . . . Highly readable. . . ."--Fort Worth Star-Telegram "Wasik writes well, and Insull is a complex man whose life and times makes worthwhile reading."--Publishers Weekly"Bloomberg News columnist John Wasik points out in a new biography, Merchant of Power, Insull started as the financial manager for a big man--not Ken Lay, but Thomas Edison. . . ."--The New York Sun"Wasik [has] taken his cue from current corporate scandals such as Enron and WorldCom in deciding to pluck Insull from semiobscurity, as many of Insull's contemporaries (including FDR) believed him to be guilty (he was acquitted) of orchestrating the first large-scale corporate deception."--Library Journal

About the Author John F. Wasik is one of America's most prominent business and finance journalists and the author of nine books on investing. His column for Bloomberg News, the world's third largest news service, is read in more than 400 newspapers worldwide in five continents.

Edison was a classic rumpled genius, driven in his eagerness to invent but sloppy in his other habits. He was devoted to the technical aspects of his gadgets, but he had little head for business or making those gadgets pay. The business of his endeavors was as unkempt as his clothing, but lucky for him, he had a young ally to help get his books in order. Samuel Insull, in contrast to Edison, is barely remembered today, but he had a huge role in making the modern world through the electrical inventions that Edison churned out. He was driven to make electricity pay, and he did so in millions of dollars, using all the dubious financial levers through the 1920's until it all went wrong. In _The Merchant of Power: Sam Insull, Thomas Edison, and the Creation of the Modern Metropolis_ (Palgrave), John F. Wasik, a journalist in business and finance, has told Insull's story, one full of ambition and financial spectacle, and leading to the sort of ruin contemporary readers will recognize in, say, the Enron scandal.Insull was born in London in 1859. He scrambled to improve himself as ever any Horatio Alger hero did, and won his way to New York as Edison's private secretary. His ability to work right through the night and get by on catnaps ingratiated himself to his new boss. As Insull took a firmer grasp of Edison's technological advances, he centered on one in particular, the distribution of electricity that could power the lights and other inventions that Edison had produced. He went on literally to electrify Chicago, using huge generators never imagined before. He initiated the metering of power and other financial innovations, not all of them strictly on the up and up. He actually fled America when the bust of the Depression came, tooling around Europe to avoid extradition. Eventually, he could not avoid coming back and facing trial for fraud. A brilliant defense expounded on his rags-to-riches life story and made credible the idea that although he had brought down thousands of investors, no one had fallen as low as he had himself, and that his financial machinations had been for the purpose of preserving his stockholders' fortunes, failing merely because everything was failing. He was acquitted, but he remained a useful enemy for Franklin Delano Roosevelt's campaign against "big power".Insull may be forgotten, but the foresight of his role in the electrification of America deserves recognition. He was a major influence in the arts, too, but not in the way he would have wanted in promoting the Grand Opera that was fashionable for patronage in his day. Insull did promote the dramatic career of his wife, well beyond her years or capacity. Herman Mankiewicz had started a venomous review of one of her performances in New York, got drunk, passed out on his typewriter, and couldn't finish the review. When it came time to write the script of _Citizen Kane_, Mankiewicz included the incident as part of Kane's sad advocacy for his wife's opera career. Insull served physically as well, as one of the models for Kane; Orson Welles handed his makeup man a picture of Insull, with his brush mustache, and wanted to look as much like him as possible. It's quite the legacy, but Wasik's book presents a memorable picture of the original, as well as the technological and social life of Chicago in his times.

Sam Insull came to the US with $200, got a job with Thomas Edison. Then he basically designed and set up the electric power grid as we know it today. Then through a series of misadventures that he couldn't have forseen he was wiped out. He was tried in court because there was at least a hint of fraud. He was found not-guilty on all charges. Why do we care about such a man -- two reasons:First, he is the one that made it possible that when we turn on the light switch, the overhead light comes on. This convenience is a major part of the reasons for the advances in the world. Not only light, but medical equipment, tools, motors of all types.Second, the collapse of his company attracted the attention of the Federal Government. Because of the way his company collapsed the Government passed all kinds of laws forming the Securities and Exchance Commission, requiring quarterly reports of the financial condition of the company and so on.It's also interesting that this book came out now in the aftermath of all the recent corporate scandals. I guess that there is little that changes in the world.

The Most Famous Man You've Never Heard Of By Cheryl Lynn Blum Subtitled: "The more you know, the more you know you don't know."Coming across "The Merchant Of Power" by John Wasik, I was intrigued by the title and book jacket, but I half expected this book to be a clever spoof, like a book-bound Zelig. It was hard to believe that one person could have had such an effect on the history of the United States, indeed living a substantial part of his life in New York City, but had been almost erased from history less than a century later. In fact, I Googled Mr. Insull, and found that yes, he did exist, and yes, he was that influential in the modern industrialized America of the late 19th- and early 20th-century.Insull was the business "brain" behind the eccentric tinkerer, Thomas Edison, who comes across as something of an old fool, and in the New York years, Insull was deeply involved in the Edison/Westinghouse/Tesla/AC/DC controversy, and the bitter J.P. Morgan takeover of Edison Electric (which became General Electric). Getting the heck out of Dodge before things got too dicey, he headed west to a primitive outpost on the edge of the American frontier, Chicago. Finally he was able to work his magic without running up against adversaries like Morgan or George Westinghouse; he bought and consolidated several small electric companies that were serving the city and created the complex electric grid that we know today.Part biography, part history, part science (or, electrical engineering, at least) and part gossip, the book illuminates a forgotten man, and a never-to-be-forgotten period of the American story.

Cathy moves to France to work as an au pair and Mary stays at home to study accountancy. They're good friends and they're writing each other regularly. It's the beginning of the eighties and writing letters is the way to stay in touch. Both Cathy and Mary don't always have it easy, but their friendship remains as close as ever. Dear Cathy ... Love, Mary gives a wonderful view of what life was like in Ireland three decades ago. Both Cathy and Mary are good writers and I loved their letters. Cathy doesn't have an easy time in France, but she's making the best of it. I admired her decision to go abroad and live with strangers while she doesn't speak the language very well, such a courageous thing to do. She puts a lot of emotion into her letters which makes it easy for the reader to feel what she feels. Mary tells her about life at home in such a vivid and humorous way that I could picture everything that happens and everyone she describes very well. I really enjoyed reading everything they had to tell each other. Some pieces of the letters have been printed in the book. That was such a nice thing to see. I recognized some of the pretty stationery from my own childhood. I love writing letters, so couldn't wait to read this book. It's fun to read someone else's and I really enjoyed it. I highly recommend this unusual and fantastic book. It's a great trip down memory lane, one you should definitely experience.

By bleachhouselibrary Who can remember writing letters, on real paper, using a pen? And then popping said letter into an envelope (preferably matching the writing paper) and heading to the post office to buy a stamp? Usually the letters involved lots of angst-ridden prose and juicy gossip. Often being sent to a friend or relative who had emigrated or just headed off for some summer work. Less access to telephones, prohibitive costs when you managed to find a working public telephone, and a lack of internet, meant we all had to make an effort to stay in touch. This non-fiction title, from Penguin Ireland, sees a full two-sided conversation between a pair of Irish teenage girls, separated by the miles of sea between Ireland and France, in 1983. Cathy has taken an au-pair job in Brittany, while Mary has stayed behind, in South Tipperary, to study accountancy. The girls embark on their journey to adulthood in different countries, but united with their love of correspondence. The best 'fancy paper' is brought out and letters fly back between the girls at a steady pace. The reader is treated to (almost completely) unedited transcripts of these letters, and is thrown back to the days of records, tapes and limited TV viewing. Chris deBurgh, The Eurovision Song Contest and Dallas are the topics of conversation. The latest fashion is dissected and gossip is ping-ponged, back and forth, with great aplomb. Boys are on their minds, suntans revered and independence is something to be a little afraid of. The cost of stamps is on their minds at times, and phone calls are few and far between. The local newspaper is passed on to Brittany and the rose of Tralee is a great source of material for girls litany of events. Photos of the actual letters are dotted throughout the book, and show the effort Cathy and Mary went to, when writing to each other. This is a wonderful, nostalgic look back to 1980s Ireland, in all its backward glory. The church still had a handle on society; with contraception, divorce and abortion all up for debate. The girls were full of innocence and still enjoyed knitting and country walks, rarely venturing into cities or even local pubs. Their outlook for their respective futures are fairly bleak, as Ireland in 1983 was suffering from very high unemployment and the holy grail of jobs was a pensionable post in the Bank. Not so different to today, so...This is a book for anyone who had a pen pal, who was told by their career guidance teacher that au-pairing abroad was the way to go, or for those of us who collected 'fancy paper' and stalked the postman. Basically, for anyone who remembers the suffocation of 1980s Ireland, but with a hint of nostalgia. The days pre-internet, pre-walkman,(never mind i-pod) and the times when a letter from a friend would light up your day, sometimes even your week. I foresee a huge influx of non-fiction titles, with all kinds of correspondence within its pages, coming to the bestseller lists in the near future. This one deserves a place right up there. It is warm, charming and full of youthful innocence. Ireland may have been in the depths of moral decline (according to the Catholic Church) but these two young women were perfect examples of how the biggest tragedy was actually the mass unemployment that divided the nation into two camps; those who could stay, and those who could not. A narrative that is echoing once again through our country...Highly Recommended.

A great snapshot into life in Ireland in the 1980s - with tales that will make you laugh, cringe and reminisce. With emigration once again very high in Ireland, but technology allowing for various means of communication - this book shows how tough life was for those who left Ireland and indeed those who were left behind, as two best friends share stories of the next stage of their life. A light-hearted read that would make a great present!

The rhythm of rural life during the 1950s and 1960s comes alive through the eyes of a Grundy County, Iowa, boy who grew up to become a newspaper journalist and farm editor. An idle pastime of batting rocks over the barn or his experiences in a one-room country school or a third-grade debate over whose fathers had the best brand of farm tractors are told in this eclectic collection of some of Lawn Griffiths’ most popular “Rural at Random” weekly farm columns in the Waterloo Courier during the 1970s. The award-winning writer tells about driving calves to spring pasture, the mayhem of scattering rats after hog houses were moved, transferring pullets into hen houses in the fall and the death of a beloved blacksmith who was always ready to weld broken machinery parts. He tells of the drudgery of baling hay, the job of cutting corn for silage, and cows tormented by flies in the summertime. Griffiths captures the seasons on the farm from oat seeding in the spring to pulling cockleburs from corn fields in the summer to making the long first day of summer a chore-free “Kids Day.” He tells how his father taught teens from town how to properly rake hay and how some came back at night to raid his watermelon patch. There’s the account how Griffiths’ twin brother earned his pilot’s license, then took farmers to the skies to see their farms from above. That and more in a collection of stories of another time on Midwest farms.

Brave Old World By Ken Moe Griffiths demonstrates a reporter's keen power of observation and a poet's skill with language in this collection of memories of rural Iowa farm life in the middle of the last century. His words resurrect a way of life lost in this century. For all its gritty reality, the world Griffiths recounts from his own childhood experience is richer and more humane than today's era of cost-efficient agribusiness, particularly regarding treatment of animals. BATTING ROCKS OVER THE BARN is much more than a nostalgic look at Midwestern rural life and farming practices in the 1950s, though it is both of these. This is an honest book about the nobility of life in direct contact with the environment, about learning from the land, about community solidarity, and about family faithfulness. It is especially worthwhile for those of us who grew up in big cities.

By Doris Gazda A wonderful description of farm life told through the eyes of a growing boy. Oh, the things he did are too numerous to mention here but if you read this book you will learn literally everything about farm life. The story is told with a light touch and is fun to read. This would be a great book for young people to read, especially those who know nothing but city life. They will learn about the hard work and long hours of farming told through the eyes of a fun-loving kid. Highly recommended!!!

We worked together as reporters for an Iowa newspaper.Although I worked in Iowa for nearly 20 years, I really had relatively little contact with agriculture. I covered cops and courts, politics and education but rarely farming unless a crime occurred on a farm or a farmer ran for elected office. The closest I came to writing about agriculture is when Deere & Co. released their annual financial report or announced workforce changes. So reading Lawn's "Batting Rocks Over The Barn" was really somewhat of an education for me. I had no idea many farm buildings were portable or that surcingles were contraptions used on dairy cows. Not only did I learn something about Iowa farms, I was able to reconnect with the genuine people of Iowa through this book. They are good people and Lawn has done an excellent job of capturing them in his prose. So for a bit of an education on agriculture or just a bit of entertainment and relaxation, give this book a try. You won't regret it.

By Amazon Customer Born in Ireland and emigrating to Boston in 1911, "Mamie" is the focal point in this wonderfully written biographical journal. This diligently crafted book is part tribute to the life of a brave young woman who left her homeland to seek opportunity, and part catalog of the massive family tree that she started in America. It effortlessly demonstrates the impact that one woman's life has had, and continues to have.In 2015, the internet and social media may lull us into a false belief that information is everywhere and thus easily accessible, but information without context is merely data. A life's story put into context can be transcending. The storytelling brings to life over a century of experiences, both extraordinary and ordinary, of Mamie and her brood. The colorful anecdotes are supported by myriad historical documents which chronicle key life events of many family members. To me, it serves as a reminder of the significance of every individual, the transience of our precious time here, and the value of sharing our experiences. To some readers, this book describes perhaps typical Irish American stories of love, hard work, struggles, and service to God, family, and country. To many of us, descended from Mamie, or otherwise, it may help us to understand who we are, and how we got here, and just how fortunate we are in so many ways.I'm incredibly grateful that the author embraced the challenge to write this book, and leave yet another positive impact on the world. Not just a wonderful read, but a journey from the past into the present.

What a world this would be if we all followed Her example of how to live our own lives and treat others with the respect that they are due. She did this without ever giving a lecture or " I told you so ". Frank did a great job and gave me new information about Ma that even I did not know. Its a treasure I'll read again and again.

Ebook PDF Practical Tools for Designing and Weighting Survey Samples (Statistics for Social and Behavioral Sciences), by Richard Valliant, Jill A. Dever, Frauke Kreuter

Survey sampling is fundamentally an applied field. The goal in this book is to put an array of tools at the fingertips of practitioners by explaining approaches long used by survey statisticians, illustrating how existing software can be used to solve survey problems, and developing some specialized software where needed. This book serves at least three audiences: (1) Students seeking a more in-depth understanding of applied sampling either through a second semester-long course or by way of a supplementary reference; (2) Survey statisticians searching for practical guidance on how to apply concepts learned in theoretical or applied sampling courses; and (3) Social scientists and other survey practitioners who desire insight into the statistical thinking and steps taken to design, select, and weight random survey samples.

Several survey data sets are used to illustrate how to design samples, to make estimates from complex surveys for use in optimizing the sample allocation, and to calculate weights. Realistic survey projects are used to demonstrate the challenges and provide a context for the solutions. The book covers several topics that either are not included or are dealt with in a limited way in other texts. These areas include: sample size computations for multistage designs; power calculations related to surveys; mathematical programming for sample allocation in a multi-criteria optimization setting; nuts and bolts of area probability sampling; multiphase designs; quality control of survey operations; and statistical software for survey sampling and estimation. An associated R package, PracTools, contains a number of specialized functions for sample size and other calculations. The data sets used in the book are also available in PracTools, so that the reader may replicate the examples or perform further analyses.

Practical Tools for Designing and Weighting Survey Samples (Statistics for Social and Behavioral Sciences), by Richard Valliant, Jill A. Dever, Frauke Kreuter

Review

From the book reviews:

“The book is aimed at providing practical aspects of applying sampling and weighting approaches in surveys. It addresses to students as well as to survey and social scientists with basic knowledge of sampling methods. … supportive exercises are provided in each chapter with solutions given in the appendix.” (Iris Burkholder, zbMATH, Vol. 1282, 2014)

“This is an invaluable reference to the design, implementation, data processing (including weight adjustments), and analysis of population surveys, and quality control and documentation of these processes. The book has a distinctly practical orientation, combining theory and textbook-like material with examples from … population surveys and advice and insight that usually cannot be found in the literature. It extensively uses R packages, SAS macros, and other software. Most chapters are concluded with exercises.” (Nicholas T. Longford, Mathematical Reviews, April, 2014)

*****A teen-age girl survives World War II *****

Terry Smith was a teenager attending art school in a London suburb when World War II began.

Before it was over, her family would be bombed out of three homes, her fiancé would be killed fighting Rommel’s forces in North Africa, and she would join the WAAF (Women’s Auxiliary Air Force). She was stationed in the Operations Rooms on seven RAF (Royal Air Force) bases, including Speke, Northolt, Uxbridge, Tangmere, Blackgang (Isle of Wight), Ford, and Norfolk.

During the war she encountered RAF legends Douglas Bader and Leonard Cheshire as well as the indomitable Winston Churchill. Her memories of life on RAF bases from the perspective of a WAAF provides a unique window into this great conflict. Her work with “the big secret” (radar), early in the war was something she couldn’t even discuss with family.

In this memoir, Terry Smith recounts life in England leading up to the war, her six years of service during the war, and life in a recovering England in which she served as a BOAC (British Overseas Airways Corporation) hostess on proving flights to Africa --where former German POWs still serviced BOAC planes two years after the war -- and the Far East. She ran into glass ceilings that stymied advancement in the WAAF and for women in general, with the BOAC, and with the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation). In many ways her recollections are those of most women of the WWII era: death, destruction, working for their war effort and surviving.

An American flyer, Harold Carver, who billeted with her family was shot down and sent to Stalag Luft 1. Sixty years later, Terry Smith and that pilot would be reunited in America. A grand gift in memories, yes, but not the end of the story.

Terry Smith Doster is still with us, spirited as ever, What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. She is of an admirable generation who believed in that deeply.

By Jeanie Her Finest Hour by Stephen Doster is the best gift a son could give his mother, a memorial of her life; one that women and men should honor. She did anything and everything, saying, “Well, I’ve never done that before.” She volunteered at the hospitals, was a WAAF during WWIIand accomplished so many things cutting-edge for women of that day: worked in RAF (Royal Air Force) Operations Rooms, was an ATC (Air Traffic Controller), volunteered to do assignments no one else dared simply because she had never done them before, and, after the war, she was one of the first female flight attendants for the BOAC (British Overseas Airways Corporation), now known as British Airways. I am in awe of her and thank Stephen Doster for being such a wonderful son.

Some Fine Thoughts By ReadingOtherPeople A memoir of triumphant positivity and inspiring attitude, Stephen Doster's "Her Finest Hour" is why memoirs are written: to tell a true story of those individuals who don't get the worldwide acclaim and respect that they so obviously deserve. It's the genre that belongs to the unsung heroes, to which Terry Smith of Doster's book belongs.Still alive to see her spectacular and riveting memoir published, Terry Smith is the epitome of a good person. Joining the Women's Auxiliary Air Force in London as teenager, she saw her life take her to unimaginable places doing extraordinary things. She acted in Operations Rooms for the Royal Air Force, was an Air Traffic Controller, and even became one of the first female flight attendants in the British Overseas Airways Corporations, now known as British Airways. But what makes this memoir so special is that it is a faithful transcription of Terry Smith's own actual words. There is no twisting of the truth or the worry of things being lost in translation. What Smith has said is what is printed within these pages, giving her story a depth that is often lacking in most books of this genre. With every predicament that Terry Smith finds herself in, there is an undeniable willingness to become better, to do better.Like this review? Read more like it at www.readingotherpeople.comThe memoir covers Smith's life quite literally. From her family being bombed several times during World War II, to the terrible incident of her fiance being murdered fighting in North Africa, Smith's attitude of resilience and positivity is both provocative and inspiring. I couldn't shake the hope and good intentions that this woman, through life's proverbial ups and downs, wore like a badge on her arm, bright and shiny for the world to see.

Once the reviewing committee completed their recommendation, I picked up the book and began reading it and did not know what to expect. I could not put it down! I was so consumed with what I was reading. You see I first thought that it was a fictional piece written by an accomplished author. After reading several chapters, I looked back over the first chapters of the book to see the title again and read the submission report and realized that this was a true story from an emerging author. This beautiful author went through hell at the hands of someone she loved...her husband. I hurt for her while reading this unbelievable yet true story. How could a human treat another human like that! But Ms. Waddell wears her crown so beautifully that you would've never known that she experienced a living hell. And probably death had she not trusted GOD to get out of her situation. This book is a must read for anyone who is going through domestic violence or knows or suspects someone who may be experiencing something similar. Many did not have the courage to get out of their violent situation. Many tried to leave but were unsuccessful. Many died at the hands of the men that they loved and trusted. Thankfully this author lived to tell her story.

As I began reading it, I could not put it down until I read every word. How many of us have stood by and not intervened when we knew something was wrong? What a brave story to tell with such raw honesty. I absolutely cannot wait to see how she picked herself up to become the woman she is today.

No Place But Here: A Teacher's Vocation in a Rural Community, by Garret Keizer

From Publishers Weekly The Northeast Kingdom, in rural Vermont, is not only "an amenable place to settle," but evidently a fine place to be a teacher. Keizer, an Episcopal minister, writes here about his seven-year teaching career at Lake Region Union High School and his students, who present special challenges arising from the isolation of farm communities. In his warm, anecdotal narrative Keizer shows how an artful iconoclasm in the classroom promotes sprightly discussion and, sometimes, a change in outlook among students. One such class involves the study of mythology, made immediate by Keizer's stories of his own bouts with the mythology surrounding the "facts of life," and we see the amusement and understanding of the farm-wise students. There are the usual bureaucratic frustrations, professional defeats and victories, but the good fit of teacher and student as recounted here speaks of a true vocaton. Copyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal In Keizer's compassionate and articulate narrative based on his experience teaching high school English in Vermont, he examines fundamental issues ranging from the philosophy and role of education to student mores and the salaries of teachers. Although the focus is on rural education, the topics discussed are intrinsic to education everywhere. One can only hope that the majority of teachers are as sincere and sensitive as Keizer. Whether pedagogists and lay readers agree or disagree, they will enjoy Keizer's tale and his unpretentious, often humorous writing style. L.R. Little, Penticton P.L., British ColumbiaCopyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review “What's fresh and even exhilarating about Keizer's book is its locale -an uncelebrated, backwater corner of New England-and his commitment to this place, to altering the lives of his students. On subjects ranging from student courtesy to teenage sex, Keizer opens up his classroom and his commitment with wry wit and rare zeal . . . A seasoned, razor-sharp testament to the complexity and fulfillment of a beleaguered yet essential vocation. Garret Keizer can do the truly remarkable, he can make a reader yearn to go back to high school.” —Smithsonian Magazine“A beautiful, sincere, and terribly important book about how a young teacher grew into his vocation and learned a great deal in the process. It’s also a book about values — intellectual, educational, and moral values — in an age that seems instinctively to distrust them . . . A rich, amusing, and deeply wise book that should challenge and inspire those who care about what happens in our schools.”—Jay Parini, USA Today“A compelling mixture of autobiography, sketches of rural life, and social criticism from a tough-minded and compassionate high-school English teacher in northeastern Vermont . . . A refreshing combination of arrogance and humility that reveals the author as neither policy-maker nor theorist, but as a teacher and writer aware of contradictions, ever seeking fresh truths.”—Kirkus Reviews

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Excellent & thought-provoking By A Customer In No Place But Here, Keizer expounds on life in rural Vermont from the viewpoint of a rural English teacher. His views on rural education covered thoughts on students, teachers, administration, politics, community, and parents. Through his writing, readers get the sense that he loves his community, his students, and his work. As a rural teacher, this is inspiring and interesting to me because so often rural schools are ignored while the public goes about discussing suburban schools vs. the inner city. I don't agree with everything Keizer had to say, but he had many good, thoughtful points, and I found myself underlining and making comments in the margins on several occasions, even though the book was a pleasure read.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. excellent read By A Customer In my M.Ed. program, Garrett Keizer was the best of the assigned reading. He does a wonderful job of discussing the day-to-day and larger theoretical issues of high school teaching, and his sense of humor makes the book compelling and readable. Though his agenda may be heavy handed at times, anyone who has thoughts on the state of public school education in the US should read this.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Educating the Masses By Faye Henderson This book shows the importance of a teacher knowing the cultural differences between herself/himself and the students when attempting to impart knowledge. Life experiences in rural, inner city, and various ethnic groups are different from the middle class educators'. Mr. Keizer discoveries about his students' value system and his own enabled him to reach the class at individual levels and lift them to higher realms. I recommend this book to all educators.
