Walking My Father’s Fields tells the story of America from the eyes of a farmer’s daughter. From running in the fields of her family's heirloom apple orchard in California to driving the tree spanned byways of New England, Vernie DeMille shares the memories and tales of one family’s choice to live a simpler life. Rich in emotion and beauty, each story invites the reader further into the heart and home of a family that left convention behind to go in search of an inspirational education, to walk the paths and fields of their ancestors, and to find the place they could finally call "home". Within these pages the author defines 26 principles that she learned while traveling the back roads of America and farming the rich fields of the Heartland. This is the story of what you can find for yourself -and for those that come after you- when you pursue the American Dream. This is the story of what it means to be an American. Joel Salatin, American author and farmer, had this to say of "Walking My Father's Fields": "Walking My Father's Fields had me in tears more times than any book I can remember reading. Beautifully written, Vernie DeMille's book opens up her heart and her family, plumbing the depths of nostalgia and relational reality. This little tome will make you stop and smell the roses. We all need that from time to time Thank you, Vernie, for this treasure. Everyone should read it."

Kip Paxton may be the perfect man. He's a sexy, tattooed, foul-mouthed, drummer god for Broken Access, and if that wasn't enough he snagged the Guitar Goddess herself. Where one door opens in life, another closes, and sometimes other doors burst wide f@$king open. Finding out he was lied to his entire life, and that all his noble deeds were done in vain sends him spiraling out-of-control. It sucks the life right back out of him, but luckily he has an entire crew of family to put him back together, and his family may have just gotten a little bigger. If you've not read the first three installments of the Guitar Face Series, it is highly recommended. This is not a stand alone novel.

Henley Hendrix is one bad ass rocker chick! She's made mistakes, owned them, learned from them and grew from them.I was so happy that Hen and Kip were together...finally! Long time coming. I'm reading the book and thought that this was a solid couple. They love each other, with a strong foundation and relationship. what could go wrong? Well..a lot actually. Everyone around Hen is falling apart. What happens when the people who claim to love you and have your back, don't even realize your missing in a club after 2 hours? Don't even wonder where you are? Even when they realize something is wrong, they do nothing about it. That's the beginning of the end.Kips childhood was fu**ed! No doubt about it. He was handed a raw deal. With an Abusive father and an alcoholic mother he's pretty messed up. He's a jokester and a prankster. I love him! Some of the things he says and the situations he gets into is truly hilarious!Let me say that some of the funniest scenes I have ever read were in this book! The Sandy/pregnancy/nipple pumping scenes were the most comical I have ever read! I was glad I was alone. I was laughing so hard!Where did all go wrong? Kip should of never left to clear his head like he did. It was a pu**y thing to do! When the going gets tough, he runs away! Well that's just asinine and immature. After what happened while he was away, I can't see a happy ending for the couple. How can one forgive such horrible transgression! What a d**k! Beat his a** Henley! Move on and upward! If someone truly loves you, they don't cheat, no matter how drunk they are! That's just the excuse they use!I can't wait for the next book! Read all of the books in this series! They wont disappoint!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Favorite Out of The Series So Far By Leona (Literary Treasure Chest) I don’t know if it was the brattiness of Sasha Marshall’s fans or not that prompted her to post chapters either daily or weekly on Wattpad weeks before River of Deceit’s release but I am grateful. Being able to read this book before it’s publication helped me to know that there were still books that aren’t trying to fit in with the other popular books, but is just trying to tell a story about characters that touch the author’s heart (at the time of River of Deceit’s reading I had been reading some crappy books and I really needed a reboot).Like many of Sasha Marshall’s fans who read the end of Walking Back to Georgia I was practically ripping my hair out and contemplating stalking strategies to get River of Deceit in my hands as soon as possible to see what happens next between Kip and Henley (Kipley as we fans call them). While I don’t like cliffhangers unless the next book is sitting on my self, both electronically or physically, this author’s work is the exception. She’s the queen of cliffhangers, she always has me coming back.Anyway, enough fan-girling. The beginning of River of Deceit starts off exactly where Walking Back to Georgia ended, with Henley and Kip in the bathroom about to finally put us all out of our misery and BOW CHICKA WOW WOW. Even though I was anxious to see where the next step in their relationship would go, I couldn’t have imagined all the ups and pit-lows they would have to go through, and even still things (as always) take a turn for the worst as almost all good things in life do.The realistic situations and emotions that this author writes about blows my mind every time I turn the page. There are a few author’s I have read that have the ability to write scenes and characters that have me crying laughing, crying tears of gut-wrenching pain, and then make me feel at the end as if I’ve climbed the mountain with each character as they go through their obstacles all in the same book. This may seem strange to some but I seriously felt that River of Deceit had the feelings of the last book in the Guitar Face series, for some reason. My thought was that since Henley is finally with the man she’s supposed to be with, Henley might now be getting her happily ever after. Pause…I must’ve forgotten whose book I was reading because Sasha Marshall loves twisting my world of tranquility into so many tangled and barbed webs that I can’t seem to keep my hands from touching them and try to untangle them, loving the pain at the same time, maybe I’m as twisted as she is.I feel like I’ve rambled enough, the bottom line is that while I loved the other books in this series I think that River of Deceit might be the best out of the series so far. I truly feel like Henley has risen from the ashes and has gotten back to her roots, accumulating all the good and determination to be the best and inputting it into being the person she is at the end of River of Deceit. She’s a new creation who’s not willing to be the punching bag that her bandmates and cousin bandmates sometime need to bolster themselves up. She’s the new Henley that I am absolutely loving, and for a second I was almost not on team Kipley because of the pain Kip brought her, but everyone is redeemable if they have a mind to be, and I hope Kip delivers his apologies the way they need to be in order to get Henley back.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Kip Paxton...Yes Please By Doris Kip Paxton...yes please. How could you resist a hot tatted rocker with humor that is off the charts? If he doesn't leave you busting a gut with laughter he has you fangirling all over his ass playing drums for his band. What else could you ask for? Oh, maybe that he can leave you very satisfied in the bedroom as well because he also has the sexual ability to take you to places that can only happen in “normal” peoples’ minds; that is unless you are linked to a rock star who knows how to treat a woman, put a smile on her face, and be loyal as a St. Bernard! This is Kip’s story and I knew going in it would have to be hilarious because Kip is the kind of guy I would love to hang around with because the antics of Kip is unparalleled....the sh*t he can’t think of! Add that to the rest of the group of friends and bandmates these guys are ridiculous. Their little escapade in the drug store is hilarious. It wasn’t always fun and games for Kip because he grew up being abused by his father with his mother looking on. His only salvation came from the Hendrix family when they took Kip in and made him one of their family. Kip and Henley have been best friend since childhood. They had the kind of friendship that would last a lifetime. It was Kip who was there for Henley when she and Caleb had their car accident that took Caleb from them and it was Kip who was there as Jagger was putting Henley through hell during their volatile relationship that threw Henley into drug abuse that nearly killed her. It was after Henley was able to get herself together that she realized that this friend who had always been there for her could also be her soul mate. It was easy at first to look past something that was right in her face the whole time…the love that she and Kip had for each other. Would this relationship end up wrecking their friendship and tearing their two bands apart? It would seem impossible since both bands were at the top of their game and the friendship that this group all had since childhood seemed as tight as any could be. Who knew that along with all of the fame and fortune Kip’s past would come back full force to rear its ugly head and affect the happiness he had finally found with Henley, his friends, and his music.Ms. Marshall’s writing style is like none other because she can take you to the highest high and then take you to the lowest low. I have done full out belly laughs because the humor that Ms. Marshall writes with is incomparable but don’t keep that Kleenex box too far away because she also writes with such sadness and despair that saying I have done the ugly cry doesn’t even come close to describing what I have done in parts of this book.Yes, there are other rock romance books that I have read and given 5 stars to because they are really, really good but the Guitar Face series stands out above them all. I have never felt more invested in a group of people and I hope you give yourself a chance to follow this group to know what the laugh out loud moments are all about along with the heart wrenching feelings you will get with everything that happens to them as well. This book was provided to me by the author for an honest review.

By Kato's Revenge This is an extremely good book for motivating you, whatever stage you are at in your life. I found the author's story hugely interesting, but what helped him was his focus on the law from an early age. He wanted to be a lawyer. Wouldn't we all wish for this kind of clarity at such a young age?I applaud the man for achieving so many of his goals, but thought his wife's threat of divorce when he considered running for public office (after having failed at the first time of asking) was a little harsh. He had given her a good life, from what I could see. There was no need for that threat!Anyway, the book is one that will help you keep going if you ever feel down.Great lines like 'The key to all these great events was that I was always forward looking, tryng to advance my career, and acting on my passions.'"I learned that I was not going to get everything I pursued.""There is a saying: If you're not sure where you're going, any road will take you there."Buy it, enjoy it,listen to it. And go for greatness in your life!

More Enjoyable Stories to Appreciate Life By Jenn S I really enjoyed reading Jo-Jo Tabayoyong's book, "American Stew on Rice," so I was looking forward to reading "Your Lunch Smells Funny."The stories continued from being a new mom, having a career, raising a teenager, see her off to college, and then getting married.Jo-Jo's stories reminded me how much my parents sacrificed and worked hard to make a better life for me and my older sister. Growing up, we don't realize how hard our parents are working. We don't appreciate them as much until we get older.Jo-Jo's stories are so personal and relatable. And they show what a big heart Jo-Jo has! I loved reading her stories that brought me back to my own childhood and made me reflect my own memories of being a new mom, having a career, and raising a teenager.

The thrilling conclusion to the survival story In the After, set in a near future where Earth has been overrun by vicious, predatory creatures.

It's been three months since Amy escaped New Hope, and she's been surviving on her own, like she did in the After. Then one day, her former fellow Guardian's voice rings out in her earpiece. And in a desperate tone, Kay utters the four words Amy had hoped she would never hear: Dr. Reynolds has Baby. Now it's a race against time. In order to save Baby, Amy must make her way to Fort Black, a prison turned survivor colony, where she will need to find Ken, Kay's brother. He alone holds the key to Baby's survival.

But one small slipup could set off a downward spiral that would not only cost Baby and Amy their lives, but threaten the very survival of the people in the After.

In the End (They will still hunt us down), by Demitria Lunetta

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—This sequel picks up the action right where In The After (2013) leaves off. After escaping the eugenic horror of New Hope, Amy finds her way to another survivor's camp, the former Texan prison complex of Fort Black. Instead of fleeing from monsters on the outside, Amy has to protect herself from many dangerous people seeking dubious refuge behind prison walls. It has a complex social structure where the few surviving women (with one exception) need to be claimed by men in order to survive, and while Amy balks at the idea of being property she plays along, allying herself with a kind young man with powerful connections. She's on an intelligence mission, tries to protect her little sister left behind in New Hope, and keeps uncovering truths about the engineered apocalypse. The previous book is a thrilling monster story with an exciting, twisting, conspiracy-driven plot. This entry continues in this style while delving deeper into far more disturbing themes, including addiction, human testing, and sexual predation. This novel is somewhat more intense than the first title, mostly due to the violence (sexual and otherwise), however none of it is gratuitous, and is well suited to the plot. The writing is clear and immediate, and the suspense is tightly crafted. It ends on a satisfying note, with room for hope, but not tied up in too neat a package.—Kyle Lukoff, Corlears School, New York City

From the Back Cover

We know what they are.But they are still out there. And they are not the only threat.

It's been three months since Amy escaped New Hope, and she's been surviving on her own, like she did in the After. But one day, a voice rings out in her earpiece. In a desperate tone, Kay, the Guardian she worked with, utters the four words Amy had hoped she would never hear: Dr. Reynolds has Baby.

Now it's a race against time. In order to save Baby, Amy will have to make her way to Fort Black, a former prison turned survivor colony. There she will need to find Ken, Kay's brother—for he holds the key to Baby's survival.

But before she can do any of this, she'll have to endure the darkest places—and people—of the prison. And one small slipup could threaten the survival of everyone.

Because I had to reread the last couple of pages to make sure it had an ending. In The End follows the story of In the After, where people basically turn into zombies (called Them in the beginning, but later they’re revealed to be florae). Amy has escaped New Hope without Baby, who is being experimented on by the super evil maniac villain Dr. Reynolds, since she has survived the bite of a florae but had not been transformed into one. (See? They’re pretty much zombies.) Amy somehow thinks that going to Ken, another researcher who’s trying to find a cure, will save Baby so he can take tests of her instead of Dr. Reynolds. But that’s her best shot, so she heads into Fort Black and starts her search. What I liked:- Fort Black is for criminals. It’s a prison, which is pretty awesome when you add it to the backdrop of an apocalyptic world. The more gruesome the setting, the better. This one was not as bloodthirsty as I expected, but this place was a nice addition.- Brenna was bad ass as hell. With a shaved head and spinal tattoo, this woman made me reconsider my heterosexuality. It helps that she’s also pretty important to the plot regarding vaccines for the Florae. This is my favorite character and the one that kept me going throughout the book.“‘I’m one in a million?’ Brenna says with a smirk. ‘I always knew I was awesome.'”Yes, you are amazing, Brenna.- Amy’s loyalty to Baby.Man I honestly don’t understand it; I would give up some 6 year old to save humanity in a heartbeat if that’s what it took. Anyway, Amy does well in what we’re taught in elementary school and says “No!” to peer (¿?) pressure and doesn’t give up in trying to save her precious, one-and-only Baby. Good for you, main character. What I didn’t like:- Amy being dumb at Fort Black.Basically Fort Black is a “men own women” kind of world where women are claimed. Yeah I get that Amy doesn’t want to be owned by someone but girl if you’re trying survive, you play by the rules. Why the hell would you openly disagree with the guy who’s trying to help you in front of a bunch of bloodthirsty criminals?? Why does this guy even put up with you.- Amy being dumb at Fort Black part 2.Yo man if you’re tryna get rid of someone, do it right. (Especially if the guy excels at killing young girls.) Meet Tank, whom the reader is constantly told likes to kill innocent young girls and is always trying to get at Amy. Obviously you’d try to get rid of him asap right? Amy has other plans though, and every time he comes back and she does something it always ends with him COMING BACK.“I freeze in panicked shock. ‘You-you’re dead,’ I say, disbelieving.‘Not just yet, cupcake,’ Tank growls, lurching toward me.”(Probably the fifth time of “Hey, Tanks is gone,” and “Tanks is here?!”)- What is this love triangle? It doesn’t even get resolved. Honestly I cared nothing for either of the love interests. More importantly, Amy didn’t think it was worth her time to tell the rejected guy about her feelings and who she chose. It was kinda funny though, reading that when he looked at her she chose to IGNORE him instead of talk about it.“‘All right, Amy,” Jacks says. “Thanks. I… I can’t wait to see you.’There’s a silence in the room. Rice gives me another look, and I feel my face go hot… We click off. I still ignore Rice’s questioning gaze.”Talk about a killer rejection.- Open-ended ending. They always seem so dissatisfying to me, but this one was like “yeah I don’t wanna write more so here ya go.” Also, everything was very very forced and rushed. The brainwashing of Baby really lasted for a couple of chapters or so. If you’re going to add some neat plot device like make it work man. It was kinda wasted in that situation.- Cliché villain that reveals his diabolical plans in the last 50 pages or so like man give me a break this is a book about the zombie apocalypse and this is the best excuse you could give? Go home.Recommended for:People who read the first one, liked it, and have some free time on their hands. If you haven’t read In the After then go read that and see what you think before taking this one up. (Trust me, you wouldn’t understand much if you jump in.)Rating: 2.5/5

As the guilt of doing so begins to weigh on her, she gets a message that Dr. Reynolds has Baby, knows what Baby is, and is experimenting on her. In order to save Baby, Amy has to go to Fort Black to attempt to have Kay's brother request Baby for experimentation. Once this transfer is made, Baby will be relatively safe. Fort Black just isn't the same as New Hope, and Amy's trek seems to be more difficult than it seemed. My thoughts:This book was a little disappointing. I felt like there was a good amount of repetition because the majoring of the book is Amy looking for the head researcher. I would have rather had some of that cut down to build more information on the science of the cure. That is really the hopeful part of the novel. Also, there is so much about contrasting Fort Black to New Hope. I understand that Fort Black is basically the opposite of New Hope, but I wanted to feel like it was developed on its own without needing to point out some of those very obvious distinctions. Finally, I always remind my students that stories much have a beginning, middle, and an end. In most cases, they should be rather balanced in terms of development. In this book, the middle takes over just about everything. The beginning is rushed and the ending is rushed. The end should have been better. It was too easy, which made everything from the middle just seem silly and a waste of time.Okay, so that's what I didn't care for. I did like that I felt everything come together. I felt like there was hope for the civilization that I was leaving. Some of the new characters were very interesting. They were really the light in Fort Black. Even though there were fairly strict rules on behavior, they often brought some wit and sassy attitudes. While there is a bit of a romance here, the relationship between Amy and Baby is still the number one focus. This is refreshing in a YA novel, because I'm a little tired of the female heroines falling instantly in love with someone and then doing stupid things.

Once in Fort Black she discovers that this used to be a prison and many of its residents were prisoners there and life is not easy there, much less a girl without protection.I liked the character of Amy in the previous book, because she was cautious, intelligent and stealthy something necessary to live in a post-apocalyptic world, but in this book she was too reckless, impetuous and she exposed herself to great danger in her eagerness to get as soon as possible with Baby (her adopted sister), meanwhile the post-apocalyptic world brings out the worst in people, imagine arriving to live to Fort Black which used to be a prison, where there aren't many rules and most residents are male. There she meets Jacks a nice guy, her offers to help her and saves her more than once.Overall, the plot was okay, the main character drove me mad for all the dangerous situations to which she exposed herself, but the plot has plenty of action, some suspense, intrigue and had me doubting the intentions of some of the characters, there is some romance, but I felt a bit slow at times. It has an open ending that was somewhat abrupt.

Instead of biographical material he introduces himself in the first pages of this book:’ This novel is based on true events. It's my story. It's not pretty. It involves sex, drugs, crimes, betrayal, bad relationships and really terrible relationships, codependency and cruelty. I like to think that I'm a good person. I like to think that I have morals and integrity. But nobody is perfect, and I have done things I'm not proud of. There are many things that I'm embarrassed about or even ashamed of. Looking back at them today makes me cringe. So why am I writing about them? I'm not really sure. I just had to get it all off my chest, I guess. I hear confessionals are supposed to be cathartic. Every person is the sum of their past experiences. I am who I am today because of every little thing I've done or gone through. Hopefully I've learned something from it all, and today I'm a better person for it.’Oliver’s writing style matches the content – visceral, raw, real and extremely fluent in describing the life of codependency that is at the core of the story. His synopsis shares where the book takes us on an unforgettable journey: ‘Oliver, a teenage hacker in Aachen, Germany, who is the victim of traumatic childhood abuse and suffers from PTSD, falls in love with an American girl online, and spends many hours on the phone with her every day for a year, until he moves in with her in New York. After his crazy adventures as a New York cab driver, he becomes a successful cartoonist and goes on to be an Internet millionaire. A painful divorce throws him into a deep, almost suicidal depression until he falls in love with a heroin addict. As his life spirals more and more out of control, Oliver gets sucked deeper and deeper into the dark world of drug addiction and prostitution.’At times tough to read because od the content, the book is at all times mesmerizing. One wonders how many more autobiographical novels he has in store for us! Grady Harp, October 15

By Will Barrett The narrative follows Oliver's life, as he's growing up as a teenage hacker in Germany, and then later moves to New York. It's a coming of age story, but also deals with many other issues, like childhood abuse, immigration, drug addiction, love, atheism and many other topics. This is one of those rare books that is not only highly entertaining, but also profound and deeply moving.

18 of 19 people found the following review helpful. Based on true events, Oliver Markus held nothing back ... By Frank Scozzari Based on true events, Oliver Markus held nothing back in this rags-to-riches-to-drugs-and-codependency novel. Realism, candid thinking, and originality of voice make this one uniquely different than anything I've read in several years.Oliver, a teenage super-hacker, leaves Germany (and childhood ghosts) and comes to New York City where he goes from cabby to cartoonist, then to internet billionaire. Marriage, divorce, suicidal ideation, and heroin take their toll. Despite many misadventures he endures, and although a social misfit at times, Oliver is an endearing character who I wanted to just grab and shake when he started on his downhill slide. He possesses the inner strength and romanticism that makes him likable, and gives him the ability to survive, no matter what.OLIVER'S STRANGE STORY is a real eye-opener. Be ready for a wild ride. It is an interesting commentary on failure & success, written in truthful narrative. I think a writer has to live it in order to write it this real.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. "They Will Not Cross the Bridge..." By R. M. Fisher This is not the first time Garth Nix (or at least his publisher) has released an anthology like this one: a short story collection that heavily emphasizes the inclusion of a brand new tale set within the Old Kingdom (the setting of his most famous works: Sabriel, Lirael, Abhorsen and the recent Clariel) but which also contains an eclectic assortment of unrelated stories. The last anthology was called Across the Wall, and as with that book there may be a few readers disappointed in the fact that only the first story is set within the Old Kingdom - and unlike Across the Wall, it does not contain any familiar characters from the rest of the series, only the city of Belisaere and the Guilds that make up such a large part of Clariel's plot.Morghan is a young man searching for a place to belong, and falls in with the Bridge Company, swearing to defend the bridge-builders against attacks from the north. When Free Magic creatures attack, it falls to Morghan to single-handedly defend the bridge in one of the extended action and horror sequences that Nix is so good at writing. Though it may well be one of the earliest stories told in the chronology of the Old Kingdom, it'll do little more than whet the appetite of long-term fans. The rest of the collection showcases Nix's skills as a writer of immense range, with eighteen more stories divided into categories that can roughly be described as supernatural, adventure, fantasy, comedy and science-fiction, involving angels, vampires, unicorns, zombies, witches and aliens. There are also appearances from the likes of Hellboy, John Carter of Mars, and Sherlock Holmes's second cousin - as you might have guessed, all of these stories have been previously published in magazines and other anthologies. Two characteristics of Nix's writing always shine through: his military background (he was a part-time soldier in the Australian Army Reserve) and his intricate magical systems. Regarding the former, many of his protagonists are soldiers, generals or combatants of some kind - which provides an easy excuse to get them drafted against their will into some adventure or other, and in the second case, he really does have a gift for combining mystery with clarity in his depiction of magic.Anyone who has read his OLD KINGDOM books know how inventive he is with his portrayal of magic (there it is channelled through the sound of bells) yet it all has an internal logic and elegance to the way it works. Take this for example:"He fired [the gun] three times, the first bullet silver, the second petrified wood, and the third lead reclaimed from the gutter of a house where wizards had lived for more than a hundred years."Or this:"Ambrose wrapped [a long strip of linen that was covered in tiny Egyptian hieroglyphics drawn in some dark red ink] around his calf, tapped it thrice, and spoke the revered name of Sekmet, at which the hieroglyphics faded from the bandage and entered into his flesh, there to fight a holding battle against the demonic incursion."He's also a generous writer when it comes to his female characters, giving them a broad range of personalities, interests and abilities, and is a fantastic creator of monsters, many of which would do well on an episode of Doctor Who. And you know a writer is gifted when they can craft a whole world (culture, history, character backgrounds) in a limited amount of words, as Nix does frequently here. Some of my favourite stories would have to be "A Handful of Ashes", set at a girl's boarding school in which poorer students called "sizars" are permitted to study there in exchange for menial service. Obviously they're looked down upon by those whose families are of higher breeding, but two of their number - Mari and Francesca - become aware of another student wielding a powerful wand, and only have until midnight to combat her dark spells. It could easily be expanded into a bigger story, and the blend of Hogwarts and Oxford University as its setting deserves to be revisited."Holly and Iron" is an original take on the Robin Hood mythos (with a little King Arthur thrown in for good measure) in which the exiled grand-daughter of the current King William realizes that her mixed lineage and her ability to call upon magic of both Norman iron and Inglish holly make her a strong contender for the throne - but only if she can set aside her desire for vengeance."The Big Question" is thought-provoking and haunting, detailing the adventures of a young man who goes in search of the answer to what lies beyond the mountain range that surrounds his home, and long-time fans of Nix will particularly appreciate two stories set in the worlds of Shade's Children ("You Won't Feel a Thing") and A Confusion of Princes ("Master Haddad's Holiday").Though personally I'm not a huge fan of short stories, this is a strong collection from one of my favourite authors, adding further material to some of his previous novels, and illustrating once again how gifted he is at world-building, characterization and suspense.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Buy the kindle or paperback version By Sandra M. Brown The Abhorsen novella To Hold the Bridge is more like a long short story. It is a simple coming-of-age tale with likeable characters but no complexity. It does not reference any characters in the classic Abhorsen trilogy although the status of Belisaere makes me think it is pre-Sabriel. Anyone buying the book primarily to obtain this novella may feel like they overpaid, especially if like me you plumped for the hardback version. The remaining short stories showcase the versatility of the author with wide-ranging world building and excellent craftsmanship throughout. I would not call it a brilliant collection but nothing is frankly bad or filler.

By Jonathan Wild Lots of fun for Nix fans - not only a story set in a part of the Old Kingdom we haven't seen, but lots of other stories set in a variety of Earths, including our own.As always, Nix's storytelling is effortless, and creates each story's universe with elegance succinctness. Not a boring page in the lot!Highly recommended

By aaron spitzer Dr. Reid has created an invaluable resource for anyone who works with learners, be they students in a public school, alternative learning environment or non-traditional students who are reentering education. Not only is this a comprehensive exploration of self, it will undoubtably yield results for both learner and teacher (facilitator) that will take students far beyond the scope of what is contained in this resource. The instructions are clear and concise, and the activities and forms are thoughtful and dynamic. The guide takes students deeper into reflections of self,of their environment and begins a critical conversation about how these are intrinsically linked. Dr. Reid's work is clearly the result of considering how students learn, how environment affects learning and how best to empower students to take control of their education in whatever form it takes. I look forward to the next book!

After spending his 20s traveling the world and hopping from job to job, Gabriel Schirm was lost. At 32 years old, he desperately needed to find direction and meaningful purpose in his life. With no physical training, he decided his answers were waiting for him somewhere along the historic 490-mile pilgrimage route called the Camino de Santiago in Spain. From the physical high of crossing the Pyrenees Mountains to the mind numbing rhythm of walking through the endless wheat fields of the Meseta, the route was filled with many challenges. Accompanied by his “guru” wife Amy, Schirm faces setbacks like bed bugs and tendinitis, all in the pursuit of elusive answers. The lessons came from the serendipitous experiences and conversations with fellow pilgrims from all over the world. Sunrises to Santiago chronicles a wondrous journey of personal growth, physical pain, and outdoor adventure while teaching us all to enjoy life’s incredible journey.

By Candace Loved this book!Loved the author's candid style of writing- I didn't want the "story" to end-Words to describe--very informative of many aspects of the Camino de Santiago- many history lessons given--a very personal story about the author's inner and outer experiences walking the Camino (the great and the not so great and actually agonizing ones)-emotional honesty and heart touching experiences with other "pilgrims" given--very "poetic" in his descriptions of the land and also the food- he draws you in and paints pictures in your head and heart enabling you to come close to experience what he experienced--humorous and entertaining--soul provoking but also funny, funny stuff mixed in with the "seriousness"--this is my latest reading of someone who has walked the Camino de Santiago- I really liked this one, thus a 5 star rating- His wife is included in this rating with her experience, wit and wisdom throughout the book-

This was the theme of the book and one that the author does a great job of illustrating throughout. Sunrises to Santiago is a book for anyone who has ever wanted to travel in hopes of finding adventure while also finding his or herself. You are taken on a journey as the author and his wife go on a 30 day trip across Spain and part of France for the Camino de Santiago. As I read this book, I found my own desire to do the Camino de Santiago increase tenfold due to the great descriptions. A lot of care is given to ensure that you feel as if you are in this 30 day journey. Little effort is needed to imagine the hotels, meals and companions that become part of this book. You feel the excitement, sorrow, anxiety, and more that Gabriel shares with his fellow travelers ans his wife along the way. The author also provides good quotes throughout which also illustrate his growth during the journey. One of my favorites is one which the author comes across near the end of his journey that he uses as motivation to live in the now and enjoy each moment. "The foolish man seeks happiness in the distance;the wise man grows it under his feet."I look forward to seeing what else Gabriel Schirm writes as he has a talent that could continue to grow in future works

By Lachula On this walk Gabriel and his wife Amy Set out on the Camino de Santiago together after having taken a 30 day leave from work. Gabriel who has had many jobs in interesting fields and traveled extensively for one of them is now at a loss and needs to find a new direction and purpose to his life.As in all of the stories I have read of people's pilgrimages, on the Camino De Santiago, I come away with good messages and ideas for myself and I think that is why I like reading them so much. Each journey is very individual, and it was very interesting to see how Gabriel and his wife approached their needs and wants, and to see what the end results have been for them and some of the other people they meet along the way.I will never tire of people's journeys as they search for meaning. I guess I just like to look into their minds and their thought processes.

Surprisingly little ink has been spilled on the final months of the Civil War in the Carolinas, despite its fascinating cast of characters, host of combats large and small, and its impact on the course of the war. Resisting Sherman: A Confederate Surgeon’s Journal and the Civil War in the Carolinas, 1865, by Francis Marion Robertson (edited by Thomas H. Robertson, Jr.) fills in many of the gaps and adds tremendously to our knowledge of this region and those troubled final days of the Confederacy.Surgeon Francis Robertson fled Charleston with the Confederate garrison in 1865 in an effort to stay ahead of General Sherman’s Federal army as it marched north from Savannah. The Southern high command was attempting to assemble General Joseph E. Johnston’s force in North Carolina for a last-ditch effort to defeat Sherman and perhaps join with General Lee in Virginia, or at least gain better terms for surrender. Dr. Robertson, a West Pointer, physician, professor, politician, patrician, and Presbyterian, with five sons in the Confederate army, kept a daily journal for the final three months of the Civil War while traveling more than 900 miles through four states. His account looks critically at the decisions of generals from a middle ranking officer’s viewpoint, describes army movements from a ground level perspective, and places the military campaign within the everyday events of average citizens suffering under the boot of war.Editor and descendant Thomas Robertson followed in his ancestor’s footsteps, conducting exhaustive research to identify the people, route, and places mentioned in the journal. Sidebars on a wide variety of related issues include coverage of politics and the Battle of Averasboro, where one of the surgeon’s sons was shot. An extensive introduction covers the military situation in and around Charleston that led to the evacuation described so vividly by Surgeon Robertson, and an epilogue summarizes what happened to the diary characters after the war. Resisting Sherman is a valuable addition to Civil War literature.REVIEWS “Thomas H. Robertson’s book about the Civil War diary of his great-great-grandfather, Dr. Francis Marion Robertson, reveals the intricacies of war as could only be told by one who was in the middle of it. The diary, written over a three month period leading up to the evacuation of Charleston at the end of the war, describes the daily ordeals of a surgeon while the author provides in-depth footnotes that supply even more information. The book is an enjoyable read and should be added to every Civil War enthusiast’s library.”― William J. Morton, MD, author of The Story of Georgia’s Boundaries“Robertson’s diary is an excellent chronicle of the last days of the war in the Carolinas from the eyes of a Confederate surgeon. As Robertson makes his way across South Carolina and into North Carolina in front of William T. Sherman’s invading army, he provides vivid insights into the places along his route. His story brings alive the trials of a people trying to cope with everyday life as the Confederacy slowly disintegrated around them. Thomas H. Robertson’s skillful editing makes the story come alive. This is a must-read for anyone interested in the social conditions in the Carolinas in early 1865 and the Confederate army’s closing battle for independence.”― Anne J. Bailey, author of The Chessboard of War: Sherman and Hood in the Autumn of 1864 and War and Ruin: William T. Sherman and the Savannah Campaign and editor of Society of Civil War Historians Newsletter“Coming from the pen of a fascinating American character and written as the Confederacy teetered on the brink of destruction, Francis Marion Robertson’s journal provides unique perspective and fresh insight into an often neglected episode of the Civil War. Tom Robertson delivers a wealth of supplemental detail and heretofore unpublished images that make Resisting Sherman more than just a valuable contribution to our historical narrative. Resisting Sherman conveys Dr. Robertson’s personal sense of urgency over military, political, and family matters in a poignant account that is eminently readable and satisfying.”― C. L. Bragg, MD, author of Crescent Moon over Carolina: William Moultrie and American Liberty and co-author of Never for Want of Powder: The Confederate Powder Works in Augusta, Georgia

The author, humbly, paints a picture of his Gr-Gr-Grandfather, Francis Marion Robertson, born 1806. F.M. was very educated, starting at Willington Academy, then West Point and the Medical College of S.C. His career brought him to Augusta, Ga to practice medicine, but, after several years, a return to Charleston to continue his medical career in practice/teaching/research. At age 55, in 1861, he volunteered for Confederate service as a Medical Staff Officer. All of this is covered in the prologue. The essence of this book is Dr. Robertson's personal, hand-written diary. It begins in February, 1865, with his following orders to accompany General Hardee's Confederate force, evacuating Charleston and heading to North Carolina to join General Johnson, CSA. Through all the diary entries, one can see his Christian faith; his hopes for each new day; his love for his wife, as not with him; concern for his five sons serving in the military and providing a sketch of families and their kindnesses, along the way. The spelling, grammar and paragraph structure prove his education. The author has a picture of two pages of the diary and the penmanship, is the best.Throughout the book, it is well documented with not only pictures, but historical and biographical sketches along the march. The Epilogue continues to follow the aftermath of the war, with the Robertson family getting "back to work". It concludes with several genealogical charts, as one can see well-known names of both, South Carolina and Augusta, GA, home of the author.A quality hardback and a great read about this time-period and the character of the Robertson's!

A Conclusion to a Horrible War By Matthew Bartlett There are a great many primary sources concerning members of the Confederate army fighting against Sherman during the infamous Atlanta Campaign of 1864. This book is different from those in that the journal details the fight for the Carolinas during 1865 and while there are other works which are from a surgeon’s point of view, this diary is handled with great editorial finesse. Resisting Sherman is taken from the journal of Francis Marion Robertson and not only gives a great human element to the war, but details the last few months of the war which have largely been ignored in the annals of Civil War history. It is fitting that such a work be released during the last year of the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War to celebrate its ending. While the journal is told from the perspective of Francis Marion Robertson, Thomas Heard Robertson, Jr., is the direct descendant of the surgeon and has edited this work with extensive footnotes and pertinent information. He is the president of the Cranston Engineering Group, P.C. of Augusta, Georgia. He practices civil engineering, city planning and land surveying while being an active historian and preservationist. He was instrumental in designating the Augusta Canal National Heritage Area which he testified four times before Congress to make it happen. While Resisting Sherman is his first full length work, he has written many papers and is a popular speaker. One of the things which I greatly enjoyed about Resisting Sherman, was the gravitas which the narrative helped to establish. The whole book opens with a statement on the fall of Charleston later going into the ideals of home becoming the battlefield. This prologue is written by the editor and helps the reader with information they may not have known before reading the work. When the journal comes into the text, not only can you grasp the scenes which Robertson has described, but you can feel the humanity in his words. There have been too many biographies on leaders in the Civil War which takes all of the humanity out of a person. Here, in this journal, you can sense the danger of what was going on. Robertson even talks about the overall need for goods in the south like coffee. But my greatest appreciation for this work comes in the form of the battles in the Carolinas during the last few months of the war. Thomas Robertson supplements details of the battles and conflicts either in footnotes or in other sections altogether. When it comes to the reading of the final months of the war and Sherman’s actions, this journal will be seen as essential to the study. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Sherman’s army during the last year of the war and any Civil War historian interested in the last year of the war overall. The detail which both the author and the editor put into this work is fantastic and should be praised for their work. Resisting Sherman fills in the gaps which other historians have ignored over the years. Most people consider the end of the war when General Lee surrendered. This book helps to eliminate those thoughts and it is welcomed in the realm of Civil War academia.Matthew Bartlett - Gettysburg Chronicle

By RRogers I spent a recent weekend reading and thoroughly enjoying “Resisting Sherman: A Confederate Surgeon’s journal and the Civil War in the Carolinas 1865.” Surgeon Roberston’s observations are personal, detailed and, on occasion, even humorous. He adds intimate perspective to this overlooked denouement of the Civil War.The surgeon’s travels took him through Carolina towns large and small, in territory I know personally from my own travels. From Charleston to Cheraw, Rockingham to Raleigh, he offers commentary on accommodations, food and people he encounters on his uncomfortable journey. During a stop in North Carolina he wrote: “A strange specimen of the feminine gender came in just before we came into breakfast. She was a regular piney-woods sandlapper with three tallow-faced bloodless looking squalid children.” He is more kindly disposed to some of his hosts. Of the same area he observes, “We were met with some kindhearted people even here. I have not washed or taken off my clothes since leaving Cheraw. I was kindly furnished with a room, wash basin and towels by a gentleman. I took a through washing and astonished my body and my friends with a clean white shirt and collar.”The book is enriched with extensive footnotes and sidebars including maps, musical scores, and even a recipe. An interesting feature is the recreation of Surgeon Roberston’s route on modern-day roads. The editor and his sisters retraced their ancestor’s 900 mile route and documented many of the locations with photographs. A thorough prologue and epilogue help the reader place the diarist’s observations in context of the time.
