There are some horrific crimes presented in this volume.Even the one case I was familiar with had some new information. I tend to disregard those reviewers who state "I couldn't put it down," but this book really kept me turning the pages.I deducted my usual one star for the numerous errors, but I highly recommend this book to true crime fans.

For the first time, descendants of Harriet Tubman tell the story of the famed abolitionist within the context of their family lineage. This creative nonfiction work is an intricate mix of family lore, memoir, and historical reconstruction. It captures the lives of the family and friends of the Greatest Conductor of the Underground Railroad in a way that separates it from academic works. The book depicts a family, from which an American heroine is born, that survives slavery, gains freedom, and begins the journey of creating a new life beyond the shackles of human bondage. The saga tells the story of seven generations of women of African descent tied by bloodline to Harriet Tubman. Harriet, herself, is showcased as an ordinary woman who did extraordinary things. Tubman was an abolitionist, liberator, and humanitarian whose service to others was a testament to her values of commitment to faith, family, fortitude, and freedom.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. "Family Recollections of Harriet Tubman With Nuggets of Important Information" By Pat in Syracuse This is a book of family recollections as a great- great- grandniece of Harriet Tubman and husband Nelson Davis; for example, what Davis was like, what Tubman's laugh and singing voice sounded like, her favorite songs, that Tubman's father Ben Ross was the preacher at the Bazzel Church in Dorchester County and other little-known tidbits of information. Tubman had no biological children, but she and Davis adopted a black child named Gert (shown in the only known photo which includes Davis). Many of her family that Tubman rescued lived with her on her property straddling Auburn & Flemming, NY, the first 7 acres of which Tubman purchased from Auburn resident Secretary of State, under Lincoln, Seward. Jones descends from one of the nieces, Ann Marie Ross (aka Martha Stewart when in St. Catherines, Ontario, to which Tubman took her relatives after the 1850 Fugitive Slave Law, as slavery was outlawed in Canada). Many of Tubman's nieces and nephews who fled MD changed their first names and changed their last names to Stewart, one of the three largest slave owners in Dorchester County, on the Eastern Shore in MD, who later had a change of heart and freed his slaves. Slaves often changed their names in order to hide from slave catchers. (In this case, it does not make sense to the present writer.) Because of these name changes and that Tubman had many siblings who in turn had many children, it is very difficult to trace the ancestry of Tubman's many nieces and nephews (not all escaped North with Tubman--you may meet Tubman's descendants in Cambridge, MD today at the Harriet Tubman Museum.) Here, Jones traces her lineage. One of the important contributions of her book is the information given on Ann Marie's husband Thomas Elliott, one of the "Dover Eight," his escape from MD, his life in St Catherines, thence to Auburn and what happened to him after his wife Ann Marie died (she changed her name back to Ann Marie when she moved to Auburn). Jones also tells what it was like growing up in Auburn, NY in the 1930s-1940s as a African-American (quite illuminating). Jones' style of writing is one in which you feel she is speaking to you personally and makes for an enjoyable read. The Foreward is written by Sally Roesch Wagner, the Founding Director of the Matilda Joslyn Gage Center for Social Justice Dialogue (Gage, an abolitionist [whose home was a stop on the Underground Railroad], women's rights activist and champion of Native American rights--completing the triumvirate of Stanton & Anthony) in Gage's recently restored historic home (4 miles east of Syracuse on Route 5 in Fayetteville, NY; self-guiding tours, with interactive displays M-F (315) 637-9511).

She is not just an American historic figure. I think school children can read this book to learn about determination. They can learn what they choose for themselves is possible. They can learn that love and generosity play a part in life and how these necessities are part of their lives. There is simple language that children can comprehend.

By Stephen Goodman I found the best time to read this book was whilst on holiday (vacation) and as far away as my normal stress levels as possible. My wife, son and I took an RV to West Virginia and did a little white water rafting, walking and cooking on camp fires. We actually read the book together and I emphasise, not in any particular order. I would read the titles from the table of contents and someone would pick one. The most enjoyable part was taking the many tests together, as a family. Strangely enough, we did not necessarily complete all the tests or even analyse all the results, the biggest benefit was how it got us talking to each other. Often the test was forgotten until a long time later, when we would then go back and finish it. It almost seemed like it was easier to understand the results after following the diverse directions our conversation tooks us.I spent one evening talking to my son (14) over a blazing and eventually dying campfire for several hours. I know the book inspired us to do this, or at least put us in the right frame of mind. After I had returned from this most relaxing of holidays, I realised that the best form of stress relief was what I had just experienced. Sharing, listening and talking to the family and getting to know them even better. Also reaffirming a long held belief that they are the most important things in life, not my job or house or the other trappings of our materialistic society. I am a great fan of George Manning's, I loved his book 'Building Community, the human side of work'. It defines so clearly the things I really hold to be true and essential for a GREAT working existence. This book(Stress.....) really helped me understand more about the topic and even more importantly, how to manage it. I still haven't read the whole book, but I am looking forward to our next trip together, so we can tackle some more of its' contents, and see where it takes us this time.

A pragmatic approach to solving a universal challenge By Dr. John Mccollister In the academic arena, some books offer sound intellectual insights; a few present a nuts and bolts approach to a problem. Dr. George Manning's newest book on stress is one of the rare volumes that offers both.A seasoned and respected psychologist, George Manning has the credentials that demand respect. He also has a way of relating sophisticated truths to the real world of the workplace.I highly recommend this book for company executives, for teachers, for clergypeople and for anyone else who must work with people who are in the state of "becoming."John McCollister, Ph.D.

Some of the things that you only say in your head are written out in black and white: no excuses, no sugar coating. Just the honest confessions of a person struggling through questions and doubts that we all face, and trying to figure out what God has to do with it. Dark secrets, painful memories, and the mess of everyday collide with truth, honesty, and freedom; regrets, fears, and faith all mix together somehow. You’re invited to jump into the fray with someone who isn’t afraid to admit just how broken they really are, and realize that you are in good company.

Dare to look into the shadows that linger in the corners of regret. Take a deep breath and step forward along the path of questions that so many others have walked before. Then try to hear the hope and promise that other people have heard and followed.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Awesome! By Sarah R. Loych This book was hard to read because of the pain I could feel the author was going through but so encouraging to see how God works through these pains. The questions she has asked God are very similar, if not the same, to my own questions. She works through and explains passages of Scripture to answer these questions. I highly recommend this book!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful book to read By Allyson Anthony This is a wonderful book. Chelsea is open and honest as she lays out what she had gone through and has been/is learning about God. She hits it on the spot with the "idols of the heart" and the seasons of changes we go through in our lives. It's about being broken, but God can still use us.

“Should be on the reading list of every journalism school and law school in this country.” —Rick Kogan, Chicago Tribune In 1983, Anthony Porter was convicted of the brutal double murder of Marilyn Green and Jerry Hillard. While sitting in the bleachers near Chicago’s Washington Park swimming pool, the victims were shot multiple times at point-blank range. Porter was sentenced to death. In 1998, within fifty hours of Porter’s scheduled execution, the Illinois Supreme Court granted a stay, pending a hearing on Porter’s mental competency. At this point, journalism professor David Protess and his Northwestern University Innocence Project students took up Porter’s cause. Soon, Porter was released from prison, and Alstory Simon, then a Milwaukee resident, was convicted of the Washington Park homicides. But that’s not the end of the story. Nor is it all of the story. Simon himself has now been exonerated and is suing Northwestern University, David Protess, and two other individuals for more than $40 million in punitive damages. This is the true story of how and why Alstory Simon replaced Anthony Porter in prison.

My name is Charles Salvatore and I Am one of the detective along with my partner who investigated these murders. This is a must read for everyone to understand how politics can dictate our justice system. Thank you Bill for exposing this miscarriage of justice. Thanks you again for clearing my name and my partners name.

A Great Read, a Horrible Story By JKM This is a tale of a miscarriage of justice so grotesque that it may make you question every well-intentioned "justice" or "innocence" project in the country. But then it reminds you that this particular perversion of justice was largely the result of one seemingly amoral man's efforts. Best of all, it is an absolutely compelling read.

It's regrettable the media outlets that were complicit in peddling all the BS the Innocence Project fed them refuse to acknowledge their lack of due diligence and responsibility in setting these murderers free, and the danger and financial expense this has put upon the taxpayers of Chicago.

The extraordinary life and ideas of one of the greatest―and most neglected―minds in history.

Sir Thomas Browne (1605–1682) was an English writer, physician, and philosopher whose work has inspired everyone from Ralph Waldo Emerson to Jorge Luis Borges, Virginia Woolf to Stephen Jay Gould. In an intellectual adventure like Sarah Bakewell's book about Montaigne, How to Live, Hugh Aldersey-Williams sets off not just to tell the story of Browne's life but to champion his skeptical nature and inquiring mind.

Mixing botany, etymology, medicine, and literary history, Aldersey-Williams journeys in his hero's footsteps to introduce us to witches, zealots, natural wonders, and fabulous creatures of Browne's time and ours. We meet Browne the master prose stylist, responsible for introducing hundreds of words into English, including electricity, hallucination, and suicide. Aldersey-Williams reveals how Browne’s preoccupations―how to disabuse the credulous of their foolish beliefs, what to make of order in nature, how to unite science and religion―are relevant today.

In Search of Sir Thomas Browne is more than just a biography―it is a cabinet of wonders and an argument that Browne, standing at the very gates of modern science, remains an inquiring mind for our own time. As Stephen Greenblatt has written, Browne is "unnervingly one of our most adventurous contemporaries."

In Search of Sir Thomas Browne: The Life and Afterlife of the Seventeenth Century's Most Inquiring Mind, by Hugh Aldersey-Williams

Review “A delightful portrait.” (Jim Holt - New York Times Book Review)“[F]ascinating…. [A] cleverly constructed and amusing book, on a subject deserving of fresh attention.” (Jeffrey Collins - Wall Street Journal)“A triumph. With humour, humility and intelligent generosity, Aldersey-Williams brings Sir Thomas Browne splendidly to life, urns and all.” (Financial Times (UK))“Engaging and thoughtful…. Like some of the most compelling biographers, Aldersey-Williams partly inhabits his subject.” (Literary Review (UK))“Superb…. Aldersey-Williams has produced not a standard biography but a fascinating genre-bending melange of life story, medicine, science and human culture…. With luck this fine tribute will bring Browne the wider readership he richly deserves.” (Sunday Herald (UK))“This is just the kind of celebration Sir Thomas Browne needs and deserves: not a conventional biography but a meditation filled with intellectual curiosity, tolerance, humane observation, and gentle wit. It shows Browne as a man caught in the currents of his times while musing on timeless questions―and, like Aldersey-Williams, determined to weigh up the evidence without dogmatism, and to enjoy the richness of the world.” (Philip Ball)“A wonderfully erratic, promenading book, in which we see how different, yet how similar we still are today to that most serene, most enigmatic science pioneer and literary master, Sir Thomas Browne, whose prose style is one of the highest peaks in English literature, according to Borges and to my humble self.” (Javier Marías)“[T]he intellectual equivalent of a buddy road trip.” (Shelf Awareness, Starred Review)

About the Author Hugh Aldersey-Williams is the author of many books, including Anatomies, Periodic Tales, and The Most Beautiful Molecule, a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. He lives in Norfolk, England.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Thomas Browne's adventures in the 21st century By aile.verte If you've lived with a favorite author for a while, read him or her until the writer's voice in your ear became almost an alter ego, you can imagine what prompted Hugh Aldersey-Williams to write this book. As he says himself, this may not be the most innovative study on Thomas Browne, it does not bring to light any new manuscripts, lost letters, or describe newly uncovered material objects that were in Browne's possession and that might give us new insight into his everyday life. What it does, however, is, I think, much better: it brings Thomas Browne to life -- not as a historical figure of academic interest, but as an erudite person possessed of infectious curiosity who might have something to say about our own everyday life. Thomas Browne emerges as both a familiar, a progressive thinker we might relate to, and as a foreign visitor to our timeline who allows us to see 21st-century problems with a fresh pair of eyes and also show us that, well, nihil novi sub sole, our 21st-century problems aren't all that new or unique.Browne captures the reader's interest with his surprising (yet often invisible) innovations (such as a host of neologisms that have become part of common vocabulary, like the adjectives "medical" or "deductive") and as an unacknowledged (almost-)pioneer of numerous branches of science, such as archaeology or ... marine biology. The main lesson that Aldersey-Williams draws from this Norwich "Renaissance man" is his ability to remain critical of both science and religion, his methodical approach to empirically testing even the most unlikely popular belief and superstition without removing the mystery and wonder from the world around us. The sections in which Aldersey-Williams "channels" Browne's comments on 21st-century failure of science and religion to find some common ground and dialogue are perhaps a bit drawn out, but he raises important points: for example, he keeps returning to the question of the tone of scientific discourse - why is it so antagonistic, a-priori condescending towards religion or any other form of non-scientific thinking? Might this not contribute to some [fundamentalist] religious rejection of science? And is science really so antithetical to beliefs, don't scientists believe in science? At the least, doesn't proving a hypothesis require the belief that it holds true? Isn't it also possible that some of what science views today as axioms might be modified, or even overturned by science of the future? Examples often come from Browne's professional domain, medicine: modern medicine's belief in the power of antibiotics, for instance, is being undermined by studies showing that over-prescribing antibiotics does more harm than good, and that actually traditional (e.g. herbal) remedies might be more effective with fewer side effects. This is the first piece by Aldersey-Williams I've read, and I look forward to reading more: in some sense, I feel I've found a "kin spirit" -- a non-militant atheist who desires dialogue & tolerance among cultures (be it different religions or science and religion) in a non-abstract sense, who cares about the fate of the world (environment, social welfare...) and is able to envision how different world views (religious / scientific) might find common ground in desiring the same good. In a world where many people feel that their only option is to stake out an inflexible position, it is refreshing to hear a reconciliatory tone without a note of condescension. And Thomas Browne is indeed a great model for such an approach: a non-partisan medical professional not confined to his own discipline, willing to admit that there might be a grain of truth even behind seemingly the most absurd belief -- and openminded enough to go and look for it.****Finally, a short note on the title of the book: I bought the UK edition because I found the title given by American publisher rather condescending towards the reader, never mind clunky and repetitive: "In Search of Sir Thomas Browne: The Life and Afterlife of the Seventeenth Century's Most Inquiring Mind" ... Oh, my! By comparison, the title of the original UK edition is playful and inventive (as is the dust jacket design by the way): "The Adventures of Thomas Browne in the 21st Century". The American publisher seems to be afraid that we Americans have no clue who Thomas Browne was, will buy the book not realizing that he's actually dead and his adventures are only those of the mind and ideas, that we need not only to be told that Thomas Browne did not really live in the 21st Century but that he was knighted, as if the title of Sir would render him more attractive to those readers pining for tales of British aristocracy. With my book recommendation, I also recommend the British edition.

16 of 21 people found the following review helpful. Excavating a Seventeenth Century Prose Writer of Genius By Steve Harvy Sittenreich The charm and skill of this book cleverly leads the willing reader into a profound and wonderful discussion of the eminent seventeenth century author Sir Thomas Browne who fascinated such later writers as Dr Johnson, the English Romantics, and, above all, Luis Jorge Borges.IN SEARCH OF SIR THOMAS BROWNE also probes deeply into Sir Thomas' knowledge of plants. The pages on "The Garden of Cyrus" are powerful because they show an understanding of what the essayist was trying to tell us about mathematical structure in the natural world. Browne's brief essay on the quincunx is the supreme tour de force of seventeenth century prose. In this work we learn that not only are crosses deeply embedded in the world but also astrological signs and perhaps even pentagrams. The palpable immediacy of Sir Thomas' experience of plants and artifacts lends a solid foundation to soaring magical and Platonic speculations. The Garden of Cyrus is rivaled in power and genius in seventeenth century prose only by the Hydriotaphia and the Religio Medeci (both also by SirThomas Browne) and perhaps by certain passages in Donne's sermons and devotional writings.Browne's stunning encyclopedia of fantastic facts and odd creatures, the PSEUDODOXIA EPIDEMICA, is squarely in the grand tradition of fantastic beasts that runs from Aristotle and Pliny the Elder to Borges' Book of Imaginery Beings and J K Rowlings' menagerie of strange beasts in her Harry Potter series.Aldersey-Williams has rendered the great service of bringing back Sir Thomas Browne from obscurity and he has brilliantly excavated the context of these supremely great essays. Aldersey-Williams is himself a magnificent writer who has given us eye opening studies of things like the Buckyball molecule, the Periodic Table, and human anatomy. It is precisely because of this earlier work, that he is so uniquely qualified to take on Sir Thomas Browne.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Big letdown! By Gotta Tellya I returned this book after listening to the first two chapters plus a bit more. I hung in there as long as I could, but I found the author's work--mainly consisting of his opinions--to be dull, scattered, confusing, and a real buzz-killer for any interest I might have had in the 1600's or Thomas Browne. Part of the reason I ordered this book was the narration by Simon Vance, one of my favorite Audible narrators. I used to think that Mr. Vance could give voice to the listings in a phone book and make the experience worthwhile. In this case, the talents of Mr. Vance could not compensate for the boring and muddled content. Many of the reviews for this work were quite positive, so clearly the book has appeal for certain persons. In my case, the book not only didn't hold my interest, it drove me away.

It has been 21 years since the dawn of democracy in South Africa. To mark the “coming of age” of the nation, Melanie Verwoerd and Sonwabiso Ngcowa travelled across South Africa collecting the life stories of people born in 1994. These “born frees” relate their personal journeys, dreams and hopes for the future of the country. The brutally honest voices of these 21-year-olds, challenging and disturbing, as well as funny and hopeful, give an invaluable insight into modern day South Africa. "A remarkable insight ... It will leave no one untouched" - Archbishop Desmond Tutu

An Important Book about South Africa By Mbodlomane This deserves to be considered an important book, as an incisive view of the South African condition through the stories of young people born about the time of the first democratic election there, and now reaching maturity at the 21st anniversary of that great event. It was a page turner of a book for me. I really loved walking in Debby's shoes and reading, feeling all that this wonderful woman went through and the amazing guts and turn around that she has experienced. For those that have had an alcohol problem, low self esteem and a huge love and fear of God, this is a must read. I wish you well for the next phase of your life.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Good quick read By Steven Marking I would have liked more facts about the bridge and more specific examples if his innovations and the patents he holds. The book is a good introduction to the man while getting an overview of his accomplishments.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Amazing Mystery Suspense story! By Lourdes Marie O. Batula I liked the way author has written this suspense thriller book. Story goes quite interesting with impulsive instances around a group of teens who found themselves in a different world where kids really worked very hard for two reason; to free the Jurols and to awake the comma ridden children. In general, a must read mystery story!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful book By Maria This book is great! I can’t afford to stop reading nor miss a single page because it is so interesting. It catches my interest because it’s different from other books I’ve read. How the author made a great story from falling asleep was amazing. I highly recommend this book.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great guide! By Jack The story is well written with characters well developed. This book really kept me engaged all the time and there is always a feeling of what will happen next. It's like they are in a coma for days. The main character, Jacob, is very shock and decided not to sleep. He tried everything that he can to stay awake, drank energy drinks, and played games, anything that keep his eyes open. Story goes quite interesting with impulsive instances around a group of teens who found themselves in a different world where kids really worked very hard for two reason; to free the Jurols and to awake the comma ridden children. In general, a must read mystery story!

In October 1942, a B-17 carrying a crew and passengers, including famed WWI Ace and Medal of Honor recipient Eddie Rickenbacker, was forced to ditch in the Pacific Ocean. While floating aimlessly for three weeks on life rafts, the men battled sharks, blistering sun, and the lack of fresh food and water before being rescued. All but one survived.More than forty years later, sixth grade teacher Suzanne Kelly read to her students a book written by the plane's co-pilot. They were enthralled and asked the question, "What happened to the men?"REACHING BEYOND THE WAVES tells the story of how Suzanne and her sixth graders searched for―and found―the survivors, the men who rescued them, and others involved with this historic event. From declassified military reports and correspondence with the Army Air Corps, Marine, and Navy men involved, she shares how she and her students located people and information, and the multitude of discoveries they made through their investigations. It is an inspirational tale of facts and friendships, of reaching out and building relationships around the world.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. ) or if somebody along the way throught it would be funny and told the author to change the name but ... By Simon Ausmus Uh........well....crud. I'm not exactly sure how to rate this one, it was ok but the omega in the story seems to have only one personality trait which is fear........of everything. It isn't even a effeminate thing, the plot seems to be Casey gets scared, something plot related, Casey gets scared, more plot, Casey gets scared, bit more plot....... repeat until end of book. And the whole Rob Colton thing, I'm not sure if it was an intentional nod to the fact that this book's plot bears(oh damn a pun) a striking resemblance to Rob Colton's Timber Pack Chronicles(no they are not the same but if I were to explain both books in a general sense I could probably get away with using Colton's blurb for this book. Outsider human picked on by the jerk son of the alpha but he finds his mate who puts mini alpha in his place. It turns out outsider human has unlocked latent alpha potential in his mate and they are forced to leave their home with their friends going with them.) or if somebody along the way throught it would be funny and told the author to change the name but yah.......it was a bit strange noticing the similarities between the books because of the name being right there in front of me.All in all it was a decent book and I hope this is the first in a series.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Don't let the cover art fool you. By llv I personally don't like the cover. In fact, lately a lot of Ms. Glenn's covers are really bad. I did like the book in spite of the bad cover. I like the characters and am vested enough that I would love to read the next in the series. It was a bit predictable, but it didn't stop my enjoyment. I would recommend this book.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I like how the characters are played By Nettie I like how the characters are played. It was sad beginning and yes I felt my heart go out to the smaller bear. I felt rally proud that everyone stood by the weaker one. I know the writer was trying to get the readers into the depth of the book and trust me you did that. Keep on writing. I look forward to new books from you
