The Hanging Judge of California (formerly titled Perfect Justice) probes outrageous decisions by the Federal 9th Circuit Court in overturning death penalty verdicts. California Judge Donald A. McCartin, who sent nine men to death row, speaks out in fury when convicted child killer Rodney Alcala's verdict was overturned after 23 years.

The audiobook chronicles Alcala's crimes and trials, as well as the horrific murders committed by eight other killers who were sentenced by McCartin. The judge, called "Solomon with the sense of humor of Roy Bean, reincarnated," provides a glimpse into his personal memoirs, with a caustic insight into the appeals process, and his encounters with rich and famous personalities. A must-listen for true crime fans and those interested in the convoluted system of the appeals courts.

It is the story of Judge Donald A. McCartin, of Orange County, California, who sentenced nine convicted murderers to California's death row, only to see them live perpetually incarcerated, waging one appeal after another in the prolonged epic battles to avoid their fates. Judge McCartin spent his storied career as a fierce proponent of capital punishment which inspired this author to refer to him as "The Hanging Judge". Eventually, after witnessing what he considered to be a great travesty of the justice system (one of the men he sentenced has logged thirty years in his death row cell) and being challenged by appeals attorneys on technicalities, religious "conversions", and a plethora of other sometimes laughably insignificant challenges to his rulings, he changed his pro death penalty stance and decided to fight along with opponents of the law against it. One of the condemned men had his court appearances arranged around kidney dialysis treatments, which prompted a local newspaper's headlines to read "Officials Keep Inmate Alive While Seeking Death". Although they did not agree philosophically, he joined the passionate battle against the death penalty along with the liberal actor Mike Farrell. Don Lasseter spent hours with the Judge after his retirement helping him document his new passion. It was not a "bleeding heart" liberal stance they took, but one of disgust at the astronomical costs that the taxpayers were forced to endure at the hands of the killers he had sentenced and their appeals attorneys.Regardless of how one feels personally about the politics of California's death penalty (a ballot proposition abolishing it in favor of life in prison without the possibility of parole was defeated in 2012 by voters; however, the election results were over ruled by Judge Cormac J. Carney in July of 2014) this book is a fascinating study of the nine vicious murderers that were sentenced to die by McCartin. From well known serial killers, like "The Angel of Death", Randy Kraft, and Rodney Alcala, the wicked slayer of several women, who made a now famous appearance as a contestant on "The Dating Game" in the midst of his killing spree in 1978 (is that enough to send a shudder down the backs of dating website enthusiasts OR WHAT???) to the murderer of young paper delivery boy, Benjamen Brenneman , in 1981.... each story is as bone chilling as the next. Young Benjamen's killer, Robert Jackson Thompson, died of natural causes in his cell in 2006, twenty five years after the crime. This prompted an outraged statement by the boy's mother crying that she felt cheated and "robbed" at not being able to witness the execution of her son's murderer. One is certainly left shaking their head after reading of the circus like atmosphere that the often endless appeals process brings to the judicial system and readers will feel Judge McCartin's frustration sharply. If you visit San Quentin prison, just north of San Francisco, in Marin County, on the beautiful bay, and gaze up at the decaying turrets that house California's death row, you will be struck with the most haunting sensation. "The Hanging Judge of California" is an extraordinarily compelling study of nine of its inhabitants. It is a breathtaking account of cold blooded murder, as well as a lens focused on a system that appears to be irreparably shattered and faces an uncertain future in the courts. You will also meet Judge McCartin. He was a man of witty insight who was capable of great humor and knowledge of the human spirit. He died in 2012, living to see only one of his condemned prisoners lose his life, and that to natural causes. You will undoubtedly have solidified your own personal opinion on capital punishment upon finishing "The Hanging Judge of California". And you will never forget Judge Donald McCartin.

Well written and informative. Mr. Lasseter obviously does amazingly thorough research of his subject matter and writes with clarity and to the point, without a lot of unnecessary filler and personal commentary. I highly recommend this book and suggest readers check out his many other books available at Amazon.com in print and on Kindle.

By SETH WALTON Excellent book for the audio Edition. Dan orders is a good narrator. He did a great job at narrating the story. My only disappointment was that they didn't put the update in the audio Edition about Rodney Alcala's second conviction. This time he was not only convicted of the murder of victim Robin samsoe but was also convicted of three other murders that he committed and sentenced to death for all four murders. Rodney Alcala was stupid at defending himself. Furthermore, his idea of using the long version of Arlo Guthrie's massacre at Alice's Restaurant song in his defense was really stupid! My other disappointment is that the audio edition of this book does not feature any of the updates on the other death row inmates that Judge Donald McCartin sent to death row. Death row inmate John Thompson is dead. That's the guy that got sentenced to death for the murder of that young boy in Huntington Beach in 1981. John Thompson committed suicide on death row by overdosing on medication. Another saying that I don't understand is this: why is California such a bleeding heart liberal State when it comes to the death penalty? They have the death penalty so why don't they use it? We put them on death row and we kill them in Texas! In California, however, they just put them on death row and they leave them there. What good is wasting taxpayer dollars on a penalty that you're never going to use?

Death by strangulation is not a pretty sight, but then Ted Baxter, who had driven his wife to suicide, was an ugly character. His wastebasket bulges with hate mail. One letter — inscribed in copperplate letters with striking green ink — stands out: You have been found guilty of crimes against humanity. The death sentence will be carried out in eight days. Signed: The April Rainers. Chief Inspector Webb of the Shillingham CID soon discerns a pattern. Baxter was not the April Rainers’ first victim. The two other known victims were an extortionist and a hostile-takeover artist; both had so many enemies that another threat seemed insignificant — even one inscribed in copperplate letters. What connects the victims? Who are the April Rainers? Why are they warning their victims beforehand? In his most baffling case yet, Chief Inspector Webb must find out who this group is and why its members are taking the law into their own hands … Praise for Anthea Fraser: “A superbly crafted, riveting, page-turner of a read" - Booklist “Ms Fraser is her dependable elegant, guileful self withholding the killer's identity till a dying fall" - Sunday Times “A well-mannered, well-plotted and well-told story” - Birmingham Post “Sympathetic, well-executed book, in which full attention is paid to human feelings and failings” - Yorkshire Post Anthea Fraser has written all her life but did not begin to take it seriously until after marriage, when she found herself at home with two small daughters and embarked on a correspondence course with the London School of Journalism. She wrote short stories before turning to novels of the supernatural, and then to crime. Her novels include ‘The Seven Stars’, ‘The Ten Commandments’, ‘Death Speaks Softly’ and ‘Pretty Maids All in a Row’. Endeavour Press is the UK's leading independent digital publisher. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Life Inside Wetlands By STUART MCCALLUM You can Leave Anytime is a true story about the author's stint in a rehabilitation facility named Wetlands. It is much more than a dry personal account of freeing himself from the grip of alcohol addiction. 'As a widely published comedy and medical writer, I loved the author’s descriptive storytelling as he meets an array of colourful people inside Wetlands. The often annoying fellow inmates, the Techs (recently recovering addicts themselves) who run the daily workshops and those he called friends. There is no shortage of humour throughout. I was also given insight into an array of addictions and the complications (health and personal) they cause the addict. You Can Leave Anytime is a highly entertaining and courageous story, of facing your demons head-on in hope of a better, healthier life. I wish the author great success in his quest for sobriety.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great eccentric characters, readable prose and dry humour made this a book that I stayed up late to read By Andrew Christie The true-life stories of people being hospitalised or put into rehab can be informative and even inspiring. They can also be maudlin, boring, extremely self-indulgent, and may exaggerate facts to better the story.Which makes Rob’s memoir of his time in rehab so refreshing. Not to mention a thoroughly enjoyable read. You see, Rob takes us on his rehab experience with the experience of a man in his fifties, the relative patience of a yoga instructor and, and this is important, the writing skills of someone who has been a writer his whole life. So there’s no angst, no self-indulgence, no poorly edited drivel, just the story of a man who got in over his head. His descent into alcoholism is examined objectively and described with a vague sense of bewilderment that makes Rob both accessible and likeable. His dry sense of humour accompanies him into the rehab process, a process which he shares with the reader, rather than bewailing his fate and begging and pleading for the reader to sympathise with him.Two big messages came through very clearly: One, addiction is tough but addiction can be beaten. Two, we all have something that needs to be addressed that we put off because of fear; it could be absolutely anything from fear or anxiety of something to depression, drug addiction and, yes, alcoholism. And while Rob confronted his demon in a formal rehab centre, it was his drive, patience and willingness to accept guidance that won the battle. And by adopting that same attitude, we can all confront our demons. And having waxed lyrical let me re-iterate something – “You Can Leave Anytime” just also happens to be a fantastic read. Great eccentric characters, readable prose and dry humour made this a book that I stayed up late to read.Get it, read it and enjoy it!

By missmickee/bookreview “You Can Leave Anytime” is a reassuring statement that relieves most stress, and is the titles of Rob Dinsmoor’s candid, philosophical and often humorous memoir of his 3 month stay in Wetlands a Florida rehab facility, after drinking heavily for 25 years. In the colorful brochures Wetlands appeared to be like an ocean front posh resort, surrounded by lush grass and palm trees. Upon arrival, Dinsmoor realized there was an irrigation canal behind the facility and it was surrounded by a chain link fence.Ativan was given to ease symptoms of the 7 day detox process. Residents were closely monitored by a host of “Tech’s” (some who were unlikely to find employment elsewhere), both specialty and professional staff. Dinsmoor found himself thinking and dreaming obsessively of alcohol, and having to follow strict rules. The men and women weren’t allowed to ride in the same elevator, were kept separated, and only allowed with men in large supervised AA meetings.Rehab occurred in stages, the final one completed in apartment settings with roommates. Patrick became a friend who stayed in touch afterward. Dinsmoor, with his background in yoga, was open minded, easy going, and non-judgmental. His observations of others were usually on target, and he avoided many problems and pettiness of attitude, and was sought to be a “peer” and help others.(From the Book pg. 59)…. “I started to view addiction as an alien part pf the psyche, located somewhere in the pleasure centers of the brain, at odds with the rational mind. Furthermore, it could sabotage your life, making bad stuff happen to you like divorce or losing a job, just so that you would have an excuse to drink or use. Addiction never slept. It lurked in the back of your brain, subtlety informing every decision you made, like some kind of puppet master.”The day finally arrived when Dinsmoor could access his personal belongings including his cell phone. He offered to write freelance projects/articles for Wetands when he was offered employment, as the story reached its surprising conclusion. This is among the best writing in rehab literature. Many thanks and appreciation to the author for the ARC of “You Can Leave Anytime” for the purpose of review.Rob Dinsmoor is the author of “Tales of the Troupe” (2009), “The Yoga Divas and Other Stories” (2011), “Does Dixie Like Me?” (2012). He teaches yoga, enjoys writing fictive memoirs, his articles of health and medical issues have been featured in notable publications, his scripts on Nickelodeon and MTV. He lives in Boston, MA.

The theme of the Nicomachean Ethics is a Socratic question previously explored in the works of Plato, Aristotle's friend and teacher, of how men should best live. In his Metaphysics, Aristotle described how Socrates, the friend and teacher of Plato, had turned philosophy to human questions, whereas Pre-Socratic philosophy had only been theoretical. Ethics, as now separated out for discussion by Aristotle, is practical rather than theoretical, in the original Aristotelian senses of these terms. In other words, it is not only a contemplation about good living, because it also aims to create good living. It is therefore connected to Aristotle's other practical work, the Politics, which similarly aims at people becoming good. Ethics is about how individuals should best live, while the study of politics is from the perspective of a law-giver, looking at the good of a whole community. The Nicomachean Ethics is widely considered one of the most important historical philosophical works, and had an important impact upon the European Middle Ages, becoming one of the core works of medieval philosophy. It therefore indirectly became critical in the development of all modern philosophy as well as European law and theology. Many parts of the Nicomachean Ethics are well known in their own right, within different fields. In the Middle Ages, a synthesis between Aristotelian ethics and Christian theology became widespread, especially in Europe.

A vibrant new voice ups the self-deprecating memoir ante with tragicomic tales of her dysfunctional life in swampland Florida and America’s Big Easy A dive bar palm reader who calls herself the Disco Queen Taiwan; a slumlord with a penis-of-the-day LISTSERV; and Betty, the middle-aged Tales of the Cocktail volunteer who soils her pants on a party bus and is dealt with in the worst possible way. These are just a few of the unforgettable characters who populate Gwendolyn Knapp’s hilarious and heartbreaking—yet ultimately uplifting—memoir debut, After a While You Just Get Used to It. Growing up in a dying breed of eccentric Florida crackers, Knapp thought she had it rough—what with her pack rat mother, Margie; her aunt Susie, who has fewer teeth than prison stays; and Margie’s bipolar boyfriend, John. But not long after Knapp moves to New Orleans, Margie packs up her House of Hoarders and follows along. As if Knapp weren’t struggling enough to keep herself afloat, working odd jobs and trying to find love while suffering from irritable bowel syndrome, the thirty-year-old realizes that she’s never going to escape her family’s unendingly dysfunctional drama. Knapp honed her writing chops and distinctive Southern Gothic–humor style writing short pieces and participating in the renowned reading series Literary Death Match. Now, like bestselling authors Jenny Lawson, Laurie Notaro, and Julie Klausner before her, Knapp bares her sad and twisted life for readers everywhere to enjoy.

After a While You Just Get Used to It: A Tale of Family Clutter, by Gwendolyn Knapp

Review “This true story is like the best craziest-good novel you ever read. Knapp's natural talent wraps advanced techniques of fiction and creative nonfiction into a big bang of story-telling. Miss this one and you miss an exploding universe of family goodies.” —Clyde Edgerton, author of Raney and Papadaddy's Book For New Fathers   “A funny, slightly disturbing, wistful read that could only happen in the South.  If you grew up below the Mason-Dixon line, this book will make you nostalgic for the South, its eccentrics, and reunions that include a cooler of beer, someone getting out of jail, and an itchy dog.” —Adele Levine, author of Run, Don’t Walk   “Despite a life as hectic as a hurricane, and at times as foreboding as a Florida swamp, Gwendolyn Knapp's After A While You Get Used To It is a hilarious, insightful reminder of what the best memoirs can offer, imposing a sense of order and much-needed catharsis on the chaos of life.”  – Josh Hanagarne, author of The World’s Strongest Librarian   “Gwendolynn Knapp may not be the hoarder her mother is, but lucky for us readers she has been hoarding sidesplittingly hilarious stories about bad family holidays, bad boyfriends, and bad bowels and unloads them all in her romp-of-a-read memoir. To open her book is to unpack a warehouse full of laughter.” —Jamie Brickhouse, author of Dangerous When Wet: A Memoir   “Wielding a twisted wit and incisive eloquence, Knapp forges her way to adulthood through the suffocation of stuff. Deliciously rich prose and tart turns of phrase make the John Waters-esque characters of her life real on the page, in the end creating a coffee-stained ink-splattered dog-eared love letter to her family and the scruffy little packrat in all of us.” —Shawna Kenney, author of I Was a Teenage Dominatrix   “I love this book. I love it. In one paragraph, I’m laughing my ass off; the next, I’m audibly shocked, saying, “Ohmygod, did that really just happen?”; and the next, I’m knocked off my seat by moments so poetic and profound they take my breath away. Knapp is a wonderful craftswoman; each essay builds on the next to paint her growing up and growing into this wild, beautiful dysfunction, and at the heart of it all is a love so enormous it seeps off the pages. Here is what it means to be a family. Here is what it means to be alive." —Megan Stielstra, author of Once I Was Cool   "Gwendolyn Knapp's writing manages to be both darkly acerbic and incredibly warm — reading her memoir, I found myself cycling back and forth between cackling and covering my mouth in puritanical shock. After A While You Just Get Used To It perfectly captures the relentless, crazy-making love only possible (and endurable) among family." —Katie Heaney, author of Never Have I Ever"I’ve long believed that someone would eventually write a book about what it’s like to grow up as a normal person in normal old Florida — a state filled with earnest, lighthearted folks who each and every day strive to bring a little sunshine into the lives of others. This is not that book.”—Wayne Curtis, author of And a Bottle of Rum: A History of the New World in 10 Cocktails

Prologue: Family Clutter  There had  been  others,  in the early days  after  Mom's  divorce, men who  looked like Magnum, P.I., and carted  us around in  their  midlife-crisis-mobiles. This  was back when most guys liked to wear  the least amount of shorts possible to show  off the greatest amount of body  hair possible: the mid- 1980s. I'd witnessed the worst  of it from  the backseat  of cars driven by dudes who  never stuck  around. Dating, I'd learned by the  time  I was  nine, was  full  of embarrassment and  let down. Not  for  kids, but  for  the  single  parent.   Mainly, I'd learned, it was a means to see who  would  stick around after Mom started yelling.  By the time she was in her second  year of architecture school in Tampa, two months deep into the fall semester, she'd found  a new victim.Molly and I knew  right away. We found Mom in the bathroom  one Saturday acting  all nutsy: applying a home  perm, trying on a new shade  of rouge, and singing Linda  Ronstadt into the  mirror at the top of her lungs, locking us out, though I was about to soil my pants."I can't  hold  it any longer," I told  her."Well, that's nothing new," she said, waltzing out with her silk  kimono draped over  her thin shoulders."What's wrong with you?" Molly  asked Mom, but  we already knew. Soon she  would have  her  good   pair  of  suede boots on, pretending she didn't count screaming as a hobby."Nothing." She smiled. "Can't I just be happy if I feel like it?" On  Saturdays, she  usually liked  to  wallow in  bed  until noon, warning us to keep it down with our  WCW  impersonations and  suffocation-by-pillow competition. Then she'd  rise like  the dead in her frilly cotton nightgown, downing a pot of black-tar  coffee  and  slumping over her drafting table  for hours. We thought that was her happy. 'I’ve met someone," she told us, buffing her nails, sharpening  them perhaps, a deranged twinkle in her eye. "You should go lie back  down," I insisted."Yeah," Molly  said. "You got a new Spiegel catalog in the mail."That was the  spirit. A healthy dose of perfect models in clothes you couldn't afford was a sure way  to bring any single mother back  to her normal state, but  Mom  wasn't having it."His name is John," she continued. She said  this  as if John were  the most exotic  name ever spoken.   "John," I said, and yawned. I couldn't help it. If pronounced in German, John basically was  yawn.   When John swung into our side yard that evening at fifty miles an hour, screeching to a halt next to our rusted wagon, it was no surprise Mom still wasn’t ready to go. My mother ran late for everything, always had. There never was a chorus recital, movie, living Christmas tree, or Easter pageant we’d ever seen the first thirty minutes of. The story of Jesus, for me, had always begun with the wino years. Some people blame repeated tardiness on selfishness and just plain being rude, but there were things working against Mom. She had a hard time getting out of bed due to the stresses of life—no child support, two nagging daughters, graduate school, an ailing father. My sister and I sat on the back steps and watched as John emerged from the ugliest car I’d ever seen, uglier than our own even, a turd-boat on wheels with one ill-fitting, sickly green driver’s-side door. It opened with several loud pops, like bones being ripped from their sockets. John was a good-looking guy with a head of dirty-blond hair and an overgrown mustache, wearing aviators and denim on denim, smiling at us with perfect white teeth. He wasn’t perfect though. He was from Ohio. Land of corn and white bread. We were from here, Florida, land of lightning and man- grove swamps, and could detect interlopers as easy as red ants in the sugar sand.“Nice car,” my sister said under her breath as we watched John try to slam the green door shut three times. He leaned all his weight against it and gave it a big bump with his hip like I’d seen some fat, drunk bridesmaids do to each other at a cousin’s  wedding  over  the  summer, knocking  the  baby’s breath out of each other’s hair during “Disco Duck.”    "Thing's broke," John said, instead  of introducing himself. "I had  these  guys  at a body  shop  fix it and  they screwed  me over. Story of my life." He spoke  to us like we were his drinking buddies, at nine and  twelve  years  old. He took one look at our skeletal  plum trees, our inflatable kiddie  pool folded  in on itself like a yard omelet, and said, "Sure is a nice place you got here.""Isn't it?" we said, showing off the tarp-covered junk and a pile of wood  where a playhouse used to be before the neighbor kids burned it down."No, it's really nice. It's real old Florida,"  he  said,  and smiled.I'd heard  that before. Real old Florida meant  overgrown and mysterious. It meant  unpaved and  unlike the rest of Holiday, Florida, with  its strip malls and  developments. It meant  cow patties, and rotten oranges, and septic  tanks  that occasionally flooded  the yard. It meant oak trees draped in shawls of moss as  if they  transformed into  elderly  women at  the  stroke  of midnight.Usually when  people came over, their eyes bulged in fear of the  house, wrapped in vines  and  giant  spiderwebs. John walked around with  his eyes  bulging in wonder, claiming, "They don't make  beauties like this  nowadays." Rubbing  his hands on the siding and  concluding, "Why,  I bet that's lead paint." "Taste it and tell us," Molly said.It was  obvious Mom  and  John  already had  one  thing in common: the ability to stand and stare  at a building long enough to drive  any  normal  person  insane. Mom  had  been hauling us across the state every weekend for a year to visit private universities, skyscrapers, and other so-called structures of architectural merit that she wanted to study and sketch. Where I saw various buildings with no public restrooms or trees and hard benches that hurt my tailbone while I writhed around with boredom, she enthusiastically commended concrete slabs for their clean lines and postmodernism. For studying so many aspects of architectural design, she certainly didn’t apply them to our own house, besides creating new walls out of stacks of baskets and magazines. When we moved into Aunt Ruby’s old cracker house three years before, we never moved any of her things out. We just stacked our things on top as if preserving some avant historical movement: “Southern hoarder trapped in haunted house” chic.“Enter,” we said to John.Mom, of course, wasn’t done in the bathroom. Give that woman a day, and she could spend it scrutinizing every hair, pore, and new development with her body. Give her a date, and she’d need to be locked in there overnight.“Your date is here,” Molly screamed. “Yeah,” I said. “Your date is here.” “Just a second,” she said.We showed John our ancient piano that poured out dust like a steam engine when you played chopsticks too fast, our sewing machine underneath mounds of fabric, our book- shelves and the bookshelves behind them. Aunt Ruby hadn’t lived here in a while, not after she kept wandering into the woods and the men in our family had to come out and capture her like she was a wild animal. Found her sitting on a stump in the  forest, asking them if they'd come by for iced  tea.  No, ma'am, they said, we come to take you to Anclote Manor. But all her  things were preserved under our  own. Coming from a place like Palm  Beach, where we'd lived with enough space for our  things in a sixties-style ranch house until our  parents split up  in 1986, was  not only culture shock  for Molly  and me  but also an electric shock if you  attempted to plug  certain lamps into certain sockets."Look at these Caboodles," we instructed John, but he paid no mind."Why, get a load  of these window moldings."   He had  us cornered in the living room, lecturing us on the difference between craftsman and  shotgun houses, when Mom emerged from the bathroom, resplendent and dewy. She could turn it on when she wanted to; she  had  the  ability to become somebody different with makeup and  an outfit alone. She was so beautiful then, so fluffy haired, so stinking with the toxic combination of Elizabeth Arden Red Door  and  perm chemicals that I could no longer detect the smell of the decay ing  animal in  the  wall  or  the  years of fried-chicken grease emitted by the kitchen, where the wallpaper had  begun to un peel  itself in rebellion. "Is  the  perfume too much?" Mom asked. "I can't tell." "No, it's great," John  said, a clear indication he had indeed tasted the  paint.   I applied my Dr Pepper lip gloss and  pulled on my deflated Nike  Airs, watching Mom give  John  a hug  before saying her world-famous line, "Well, excuse our  junk." Certainly if you  went back  in  time and researched our family crest, it would read Lord, bless this mess. But John didn’t mind our junk. He felt comfortable with it, excited even.“You have a lot of cool stuff,” he said. “This place is great.” She smiled, and I knew it was over then. We’d be stuck with these two loonies forever, listening to them talk about the joys of accordion doors and carpet samples. Molly sulked and wrapped herself up in a baggy sweater, loathing her existence like every middle-school student who’d ever been forced to come out of their bedroom. By bedroom I mean the square foot of living space she had carved out in the front junk room. “Well, where are we going?” I asked. At least we usually got a free meal out of the deal.“We?” Mom laughed. “Oh, no, honey. You’re getting dropped off at Grandma and Grandpa’s. John and I are going dancing.”

By Elizabeth A Rudge If you've enjoyed the work of David Sedaris and Jenny Lawson you will love Gwendolyn Knapp. Knapp is a master at drawing the reader into her world, then barricading you in with collections of family tales. A master of visual references, you will be convinced it's cool to be a redneck from Florida and no matter where you end up in your life there's always one thing you can count on...family...and all the trinkets that follow.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Bravo! By LRR I love a book that makes me laugh and that I can relate to. This definitely fits the bill. I made the mistake of reading parts of it in a public place and laughed so loud it startled those around me! It made me laugh. It made me cringe. It made me count my blessings. It made me recall vivid memories of an era I'd forgotten. I am a big fan. Bravo Ms Knapp

Shoestring Theories, by Michael Janflone

About the Author Michael Janflone was born in Washington, PA. Let's see, important things about me since I can't write about myself in the third person, I tend to use curse words when I write, and speak, but I have developed a filter somewhat stronger than single-ply bargain dollar store toilet paper. I'm really not such a morbid guy, actually sarcasm is language 1a behind English. Factual things: I used to be a pharmacist. I spent a year in the Federal Prison system. I did a lot of heroin, opiates and am lucky to be alive. I am recovered, thanks to the grace of God and dead people who wrote a pretty impressive book a while back that is called Big even though it is indeed just regular size. Other stuff of no consequence- I can cook. Well. I rarely turn on the TV, but when I do, it is to watch some Pittsburgh sports team. I like to travel and hate the word wanderlust. Even typing that into the bio made me throw up a little bit in my mouth. I live in South Florida now, and it has finally become home, because I understand home is an inside thing, and I love the beach and ocean. It's humbling. So are all the people in my life today, and those who never left. Thank you all.

As soldiers who have just returned from war, we fight a separate war daily in an attempt to leave the war behind. Many soldiers, just like myself, come home from war only to fight a separate internal battle, with debilitating illnesses such as post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. It was important for me to share my story not only for myself but for those who have fought, for those who have fallen, and for those who continue to wage war in order for the United States of America to continue to remain free. The price of freedom is not free. War is chaos, and many soldiers bear the scars from it for the rest of our lives.

From a Soldier's Perspective, by Michael Lee Womack

About the Author On the seventeenth day of February 1987, author and poet Michael Lee Womack was born in the small town of Sanford, North Carolina. Eighteen years later, he would make a decision that would forever change his life. Just a month after graduating high school, he would enlist into the United States Army on the thirtieth of June 2005. From there, he would embark on a journey unlike any other. He attended One Station Unit Training at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Upon the completion of his training, he was relocated to the Twenty-Fifth Infantry Division’s Schofield Barracks inside of Hawaii. Once there, he would become a part of a band of brothers that would eventually become like family to him. His first unit was just like any first because it will always be special to him. The Third Squadron, Fourth US Cavalry Regiment took him on a three-year tour of the army, and fourteen months of that included a 2006–2007 tour of Iraq. After a three-year stint of being with the Third Squadron, Fourth US Cavalry Regiment, he had decided that it was time to explore the army even more. He reenlisted for another three years and relocated back to Fort Knox, Kentucky. This go around, he found himself working as the OPFOR that assisted in the training of freshly new army lieutenants with the First Squadron, Sixteenth US Cavalry Regiment. Here he would work countless hours in the rain and snow to ensure that these lieutenants were prepared to take on their next mission and ready to lead their own soldiers into war. After a year of training lieutenants, this seasoned soldier was ready to move on. The year is now 2009, and after four long years of being a 19 Delta Cavalry Scout, he decided that he would like to specialize in a new military occupation. Fort Gordon, Georgia, would be his next stop, and after an extensive amount of training with satellites, he would become a 25 Sierra / Satellite Operator/ Maintainer. After completing his training, Fort Stewart, Georgia, would be his new home away from home. The year is now 2010, and after less than a month of being a soldier in the Third Infantry Division, this dogface soldier was headed for his second deployment to Iraq. From 2010 to 2011, he would encounter an eleven-month deployment to Iraq, and on the twenty-seventh of May 2014, he was medically discharged from the United States Army. It is now almost a year later, and Sergeant Womack has now pieced together his next published book, From a Soldier’s Perspective. He hopes that you gain much insight from it on what life was like for him as a soldier, as well as what life has been like for him as a veteran.

I was drawn to it because of my passion for the military and servicemen and women. The title, the cover art and the author's description intrigued me. I loved how Mr. Womack used his poetry to make himself vulnerable to the reader and powerfully express his feelings and his reactions to his wartime experiences. Through his verses, the author opens the window into the interior life of a soldier with all its terror, panic, pain. Because of my own experience with trauma and PTSD, I sensed that Mr. Womack has an intimate understanding of the emotional turmoil and psychic struggle that it involves. I highly recommend this book to anyone struggling with the effects of PTSD or who knows someone who is. In fact, the author's beautifully written poems would be a healing balm to anyone suffering from any kind of pain or loss.

Hayes I was introduced to this book of poems tonight written from a U.S. Army Soldiers perspective on being in Iraq. Fighting for My Freedom. Your Freedom. Our Country..Once I started reading I count stop. And I know if you pick this book up you won't stop either.I felt his pain in so many. I felt him healing in others. It's very emotional. In a good and bad way. But the bad you shouldn't hide from , you should know. This is the Authors way of getting this horrible war out of his head, the things he saw the things he did , the loss of friends one in particular, I think haunts him, and telling us the things we do not know that they endure there and once they come home.. worst of all. Never feeling safe when you should. This book of poems is emotional, heartbreaking, but also a eye opener to people who are ignorant to what goes on while these soldiers are fighting for us , our freedom. To how they feel when they come home and nothing seems as it is to them. looking over their shoulders because they can't leave those horrible images , memories behind awake or asleep. What happens to them is told through these poems . This Solider bares his soul through these poems all in hopes of healing. And I hope it does work for him. I can't see anyone more deserving after reading these but I know there are so many..He just has the courage to let us ,the readers in. He is a Hero..These poems have became his drug of choice , as he Said so many return and lean on drugs, alcohol to get rid of the tortured thoughts , images & dreams . That we the people their protecting look down on them , some not all, that don't want to understand what they go through, endure FOR US.!I agree their are people who are very ignorant to what these people , these hero's do for our Country to be free. This book will clear that up for anyone who thinks it's so easy or even pointless what these soldiers do for us. That don't think about how they feel after their time is up and they come home or come home from being wounded or worse. I myself am grateful and this book has even made it clear to me , a person who knows what they go through in war not when they come home. I myself Never thought how bad it really is. I didn't think in any way it was perfect , life goes back to normal just like that but I didn't think it was as bad as I just read. It's a definite eye opener. If you don't know a lot or anything about PTSD you will after reading this.I felt so sad reading some of these poems but at the same time am happy that I know this one particular Solider is writing these to heal his mind. If this works for him I am happy for him.I hope and pray it heals his mind and soul. This book reminded me of things in my own life, under Very different circumstances that I overcame but was a struggle on a daily basis. I can relate to him in this way but in no way can I imagine what he goes through on a daily basis after what I just read in these poems.I think this book is not only a great tool to helping other soldiers but any person who's trying to overcome something extremely difficult in your life. If this book is not a inspiration then I don't know what is.I give this Man, this Soldier all the credit in the world for having the courage to write these feelings on paper and then publishing them, putting his heart and soul out there for everyone to read what he feels, what so many of these men and women feel once coming home after this war that seems will never end.I highly recommend this book to. everyone.Michael Lee Womack will always be a Hero in my eyes. I cannot Thank You enough for what you have done and continue to endure for your county..

A better understanding of our soldiers By Kam (request submitted by author for an honest critique)Unless you walked a mile in a soldier's "shoes", you can't fully understand what their time deployed has done to their psyche and bodies. Yes, family and friends live with the aftermath right alongside them. However, loved ones can't fully understand what's going on in the soldier's mind. The battles they still face well after their time of war is over.I have no doubt Michael's poetry won't have you appreciating a soldier's job a bit more.I simply couldn't pick a favorite poem. For me, they all were touching -- so many emotions pouring from his heart/mind into ours.Thank you, Michael. Thank you for opening up to us, letting us in, and sharing your time over there and civilian life will us.My only negative point to address (which I brought up to him) was the pricing of the paperback/hardcover. He stated he had no control over it. I highly suggest reading this but, for those who are watching their wallets, I would opt for the kindle version.

** Get this book by Author Kale Makana **The 1800’s, particularly the latter half of that century, was a time full of change, orchestrated chaos, and new beginnings. England was in the throes of the Industrial Revolution. The United States of America was blazing a trail for the western half of the country. In addition to the exploration of the continent, the country broke out in a civil war over the matter of states’ rights. South America was in a sort of Cultural Revolution as they drifted away from the control of Spain and their governments were ruled by military dictators. Yet, located in the center of Pacific Ocean, a string of islands existed making waves in World History comparable to any other much larger country or nation. This string of islands is referred to today as Hawaii. From how the archipelago measuring over three thousand kilometers long formed the first settlement to the unification of the islands by King Kamehameha the Great, Hawaii’s rich culture, and history takes a hold of you and takes you on a ride of the highs and lows of the monarchy—that is, until subterfuge, trickery, and greed snatch the islands from the hands of the last monarch—Queen Lili’uokalanai. Watch as in a matter of forty eight years, the population of native Hawaiians drops from ninety five percent to a tiny fifteen percent. The young princess must make a decision that could cost many of those under her control the loss of financial prosperity and choose between the lives of her people or their livelihood. Follow along as William McKinley deals a final blow to the Hawaiian Kingdom with his McKinley Tariff Act of 1890. Then came the day that the tiny kingdom would find itself absorbed into another—the day that Hawaii became a territory of the United States of America in 1898 after the overthrow & imprisonment of the Queen sliced through the heart of a kingdom forever changing its history. >>Purchase or Download This Book Today, Available on Kindle & in Print. She is one of the brave women that shaped history especially for Hawaii's history. Some hearts are not easily corrupted and lives for the betterment of his/her people. I really enjoyed reading this book. This is one of those books that has added to my historical knowledge. Thumbs up for Kale Makana for writing this book well :)

This book provides a fascinating insight to the last days of the monarchy of Hawaii as seen through the eyes of its last queen and her daughter. The book is well-documented and a must-read for anyone interested in Hawaian history. The writer takes you back to a time of elegance and royalty in the kingdom, and ends with the destruction of the Hawaiian way of life.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Worth checking out By Denniger Bolton These books are operational manuals for Amazon Prime and the Kindle Lending Library and basically tell you what you can expect from Amazon, America’s electronic commerce company. As a member of Kindle Unlimited but not Prime, I found out that KU is also included in a member’s Prime subscription. I did not know that. I was surprised that there were 350,000 books, with 70,000 on KU, free two-day shipping, a massive pool of music, 15,000 movies and TV shows, and you can get four pre-release Kindle books for free each month. Prime has, according to this book, signed a licensing deal with HBO. The language in these books was a little strange, like they had been badly translated, but the books themselves were pretty informative and I learned a lot. At $99 per year, it still seems a little steep for me, but maybe worth it if Kindle Unlimited is included.

By alexander p Amazon has been here for quite a time now and I admit that I thought it's just mainly for books but when I have tried it, there a re a lot of things you can find here and there are a lot of services amazon offers such as this prime. I didn't know what it is, and found these books which are really great because it discussed and explained it very well. The books are comprehensive and I have learned a lot.

Tattooed bad girl meets eccentric rich man.Two complete opposites, each refusing to become someone they are not, trudge forward in their respective lives, hoping something will change. And, one day, their two worlds collide.Stevie is a foul-mouthed tattoo artist who is only attracted to alpha males, bikers, and tattooed bad boys. Frustrated that yet another boyfriend has abused her, she has traveled halfway across the nation to a new city and wonders if she'll ever find a mate.Today, standing in the rain without a ride, she is having a bad day. Wilson is a self-made millionaire. In his life, and throughout earning his hundreds of millions, he has learned money can't buy happiness nor can it buy love. Home-schooled and raised without the comfort of siblings or friends, his lifelong hope of finding someone to suit him has gone unanswered.Today, he is having the worst of days. He's exhausted and despite all of his riches, he's simply done trying to continue... As fate would have it on this dreary day, they meet. Standing before each other, completely opposite in appearance, they can't help but individually wonder how their respective lives may change if they were able to see beyond what is on the surface and accept who the other person really is instead of concentrating on what they appear to be. Neither wants anything more than to love and be loved. If they can somehow make this work, their lives will be forever changed. Pretty In Ink is an erotic romance novel of lust, loss, and eventually, love. This stand-alone novel has the best of HEAs, no cheating, and no sex outside the relationship. Prepare for a modern day Cinderella tale, but due to the graphic nature of the sex, please be over 18 to enjoy this read. This novel is Book II of the Bodies Ink and Steel series, a series of stand-alone books about the individual lives of the tattoo artists who are employed at "Blurred Lines", a tattoo shop.

Review Scott Hildreth, as I've declared more than once throughout his stellar writing career, continues to amaze me. 10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Pretty In Ink turns out to be Pretty--great, unexpected, and a satisfying read. By missy55 Scott Hildreth’s Pretty in Ink is Book 2 of Bodies, Ink & Steel series. Stevie Satterfield is a tattoo artist who has just moved from the West Coast to start a new life without the abuse from her past. She believes her dating needs can only be met by Harley riding bad boys and sadly not many of them. On a rainy day at a grocery store She meets a Suit, a pretty one, and decides to see what is different. Asher Wilson is a self-made man who is beyond lonely and has been most of his life. On the day he runs into Stevie, He believes his life is changing and it does, just not the way he had planned. Stevie comes to accept “Living on the cusp of being white trash and seeing he clearly lived somewhere in complete contrast made me believe the differences between Wilson and me were enough that I would never get used to the things he may do to, for, or with me.” Wilson’s surprised that “My father said a relationship is no different than a good romance novel. A fight, separation, angst, and an eventual reunion are all required to make it great.” In Pretty In Ink Scott Hildreth steps out of his angst driven twisted stories and takes Wilson’s father definition of a great romance to the top. Pretty in Ink not only has two opposite but pretty main characters, but the whole story turns out to be Pretty—great, unexpected, and satisfying. Scott Hildreth takes a turn in his storytelling that a satisfying surprise. Pretty In Ink is a standalone read with less of the gritty bite we usually get from Scott Hildreth. It is a must read in the growth of Scott Hildreth’s writing style and I can not wait to see what is next. Thanks Scott Hildreth & Good Writing

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Sweet Emotional Love Story By kathi jo goldwyn I have to be honest here, of all of Scott's books I couldn't wait for this one. The thought of a story about a brassy, ballsy tough girl? I'm all about it. What surprised me the most though, was how much I would love Wilson's character. He is an honest man, unlike any man Stevie has been with. His life, his upbringing and his views on life really blew my mind. He is the Prince to Stevie's Princess. And what a Princess she is. She tells it like it is. She is strong and artistic. This beautiful tattoo artist will capture your heart. This is a true love story. It is a story about how two people from different worlds, who 'look like' a mismatch , are perfect together. Get out the tissues and have an emotional read. Some of it is a bit predictable. What HEA is not? But I loved this book. The fact that a man wrote about a woman learning to trust in love? It touches my heart. My favorite scene has to be when Stevie glides across the floor and says this is the 'closest I could come to surfing in Kansas'. Scott understands what freedom looks like. And he created Stevie to be free to love.

Stevie is the queen of sass, she isn't afraid to speak her mind. Wilson is the kind of man every women dreams of, rich, romantic and willing to stand up for her. This is so much more then a modern day Cinderella story. It started on a rainy day in Witchita. Wilson was doing something he felt needed to be done. Then a girl walks out in need of a ride, and his life is truly changed forever.
