SHE WOULD DARE ANYTHING TO SAVE THE WORLD FROM HIS RULE. EVEN HIS BED. He ascended from the darkness years ago—Azrael the Eternal, Azrael the Undying, Azrael Who Is Death—bringing with him the black rains, the fires, the souring of the sky, and the Eaters. Now he rules in the walled city of Haven with his favored Children and his dead court, while all that is left of the living struggles to survive in the ruins of a world that used to be their own. But even as extinction looms, humanity will never surrender to their monstrous conqueror. For Lan, this brutal life has been the only one she’s ever known, but she still believes it can change. If the war can never truly end until the Eaters are ended, she will go to Haven, to Azrael himself, and demand he end them. To her surprise, she does not immediately die the hero’s death she expected. Instead, Azrael offers her a chance to convince him, and all she has to do is submit herself to the chill embrace of the lord of the Land of the Beautiful Dead. From the author of The Scholomance and The Last Hour of Gann comes a new vision of erotic horror! This book contains explicit sex and gore and is intended for mature readers only.

I’m pretty comfortable in the romance genre, and honestly, I didn’t think I had any firsts left, but I was wrong. I haven’t really been drawn to post-apocalyptic books (though I love The Walking Dead) and I wasn’t sure about this one. I’d seen good things about Ms. Smith’s earlier works, but I mean, we’re talking about stories involving possible non-consensual sex/rape, alien/non-human heroes, violent and brutal worlds that are as far from safe as you can get.So...yeah. I was like, no thanks. Not my cuppa. I like being the fluffy bunny. Then I hit a bit of a book slump, and my twitter friend Lexxi spoke so highly of this, I couldn’t resist. I am so glad I listened to her. R. Lee Smith showed me why I should risk my cottontail every once in awhile. She took me by the hand and lead me into a world that dominated my thoughts for days, left me wrung out and loving every bit of it. Told from third person perspective of Lan, the world is merciless and it captured my attention in ways I did not anticipate.Brutal world: Azrael is Lord of the Beautiful Dead, able to raise the dead, though he himself is not a dead man. He simply cannot die. He unleashed The Eaters (aka zombies) on the living, took over the world and now resides in what is left of England, in the capital he has renamed Haven. Lan, after the death of her mother, travels from her small village called Norwood, for an audience with Azrael. Lan and Azrael’s battle of wills takes center stage through most of the book, as Lan asks for Azrael to end the Eaters. Azrael has vowed to never end them, as they protect Haven and its inhabitants. Lan is just as determined to change that, since they’ve almost wiped out the human race, and her mother turned into one. She never wants anyone else to suffer that devastation, seeing their loved ones turn into mindless eating monsters.Erotic Horror: I think this was a good warning for me, and I didn’t go into the story thinking I was getting a straight romance. It’s not, though I love that the romance is a big part of this twisted tale. There aren’t wild and crazy sex scenes, though most have an unexpected heat. I’ve seen it described as having elements of a horror fairy tale, and I think that’s as close to the mark as anything else. Macabre and creepy at times, sweet and heartwrenching at others, I couldn’t look away.Suffering, thy name is Azrael: Azrael is in my top 5 ever tortured heroes, ever. The atrocities he’s committed and the atrocities he’s had committed against him, helped to shape him and you really get a chance to understand his actions. He is not a bookboyfriend that is going to captivate you with his amazing looks. He is horrific to look at, but his tender side, and his connection with Lan, make you melt and root for him to find love with Lan. Azrael has other mistresses, or dollys, as Lan calls them, and normally I would shy away from this with a vengeance, but I could accept this because of emotionally, it’s all Lan, no contest.Lan’s emotional journey is fantastic: The story is from Lan’s perspective, even if told in third person, and you get to see the best and worst of her without filters. Funny enough, her best and worst feature is the same - her stubbornness. It is admirable at times and frustratingly bullheaded at others, but she’s never dull and I appreciate her honesty. She’s not perfect but she’s as fascinating as Azrael in her own right. As in any good fairytale: You need huge obstacles, torture, tragedies, and ultimately a HEA. There is all that and more in this story. At approximately 751 pages, it’s a long read. I love it but be forewarned that this takes its time unfolding and I spent the last 30% or so finding myself in tears at the most unexpected moments but I closed my kindle with a smile on my face.I think it could be edited to tighten up the plot, but I loved exploring every facet of this world. The secondary characters that populate this, from Mr. Wickham, Lan’s tutor, to Serafina, Lan’s caustic and hilarious handmaiden and Deimos, the unwittingly sad captain of the Revenants, they all left their impression on me. Each contributed moments that enriched this story and made this world come as alive as a tale about the dead can get. Please ignore the cover: If there’s anything I didn’t like about this, it would be the cover. No, it’s not even remotely good. In fact, I’d go so far as to say it’s pretty shiteous, but that is not an indication of the writing within. Really. If I had judged this book by its cover, I would have missed out on an excellent read. The Bottom LineSo emotional, haunting, bittersweet yet hopeful all at once, it’s hard to put it into words how much I enjoyed this read. It’s one of those books that will stay with me long after I turned the last page. My favorite of the year. I highly recommend this for those willing to enter this post-apocalyptic world. I loved it.

I've read a few books from this author and they are not like any other book you have read. If a book has 700 pages I usually say "forget this one" but this story has over 700 kindle pages and I was getting nervous that it was going to be over too soon. My pulse actually was raised that I'm at 18%, 32%, 45%... complete. Please write more books R. Lee Smith who ever you are. Now to what worked so well. The writing is like sipping your favorite wine or putting on your favorite fuzzy socks. It just makes you feel good, content and ahhhh. The world building of Haven after post apocalyptic Earth was creative and expertly detailed. The character development was so detailed that I even understood what a dead person may be thinking or feeling.Lan, the Heroine, is a sassy and foul mouthed young woman who decides she is going to break into Haven to meet the Master and Lord of Earth, Azrael. We don't know what Azrael IS but we get to know him quite well as Lan's lover. At first ,his behavior is unpredictable and violent but as we get to know him his behavior seems more just and kind. Lan doesn't back down to him and that is quite different and appealing to him. Lan's life in Haven starts with her intention to change the world but changes over time during her stay as their relationship grows. The love scenes were certainly different than other romances. Since Azrael is an immortal his body is different that a typical human. Most don't like to touch him let alone be around him but Lan could get past this to remain close. I found the scenes still steamy and believable. The plot allows you to consider some moral and ethical issues such as what is right and wrong in war? What event starts a war? What events continue a war? Who's life is worth more? The plot was surprising deep for a romance. By the end I was crying for the characters and believed I understood them as people with strengths and flaws. I really just enjoyed the whole thing and wish I could go back and read more chapters. R. Lee Smith please write more books!!

A love story that endures all time and limits By Pam Godwin Grim, richly complex, and immensely satisfying, this book is the epitome of thought-provoking storytelling. What I hate most about it is that it’s over. After 750 intimate pages in the lives of these characters, I loathe the idea of moving on without them, which means I’ll re-read, and re-read again. The heroine, Lan, forces you to feel things—warm, fuzzy things—for a monster you would deplore in real or imaginary life. Maybe he’s not a monster. Maybe he’s the devil that created the monster. No matter how black his heart or grotesque his appearance, you’ll see beyond the devil’s mask, and you’ll fall deeply and hopelessly in love with his soul.Azrael is captivating, smooth, brooding, and hideous to behold, a thousand times over, but you’ll sympathize with him all the more for it. Why? Because even the devil has a soft spot, and once it’s exposed, you’ll latch onto it, burrow into it, and discover an appreciation you never expected. This brutal world is difficult to endure at times, because RLS succeeded wonderfully in world-building. Humanity is dissected, the follies and greed and ignorance of man displayed on pikes for all to see. And the romance? Ahhh, it’s Beauty and the Beast and Phantom of the Opera and so much more. This is romance at its deepest, most tragic, and hard-earned core. This is the kind of love that wages wars, alters lives, and breeds hope. Selfless and impossible love. It’s a love story that endures all time and limits.I’ve read all of RLS’ books, loved them all, but LotBD is my new favorite. I highly recommend.

Today there are more children than ever before in need of a variety of additional support needs, and many of these children have poor movement as a key contributory factor. Even in children with no specific ‘label’, movement is being found to be linked to learning, and educational professionals need to understand what is amiss and how to support children who do not meet their motor milestones at the correct time.

The brand new topic areas featured in this comprehensive and practical new edition include:

  • a discussion of terminology and labelling (in light of current inclusion guidelines)
  • a range of age specific activities
  • a section on the neurology of dyspraxia, showing the motor pathways that are energised and define motor competence
  • a greater emphasis on balance, coordination and control
  • examples from children of how movement is dependent on planning, sequencing and organising
  • more practical activities that can form the basis of a programme to support the children.

Practical strategies are provided throughout this authoritative book, so that teachers and other professionals can identify and understand movement difficulties, are empowered to support the children, and work effectively with the parents.

Best Ebook PDF Trish: My Life and Loves, by Patricia Rae Kessler

Patricia's story is deeper than a love story; it is a story about love; a story about continuing to believe in the mystery and glory of love, even in the face of abuse, lies, and broken promises. Its also a story about tenacious courage, about choosing to view life and people through rose-colored glasses, and believing that even when those we trust fail us: love never does. Eight divorces have not shaken this belief one bit. Patricia's special gift is to see and believe the best in us rather than the worst in us, even in those who tried to destroy that belief. She simply ignores useless lies and broken promises and continues to believe love and goodness will always triumph, in the end. This kind of belief in our goodness is contagious.

Patricia has not only survived tragic events that would leave some of us bitter and faithless, she has turned them into positive life lessons and opportunities to thrive, and in so doing has reminded us that evil is no match for love.

Trish: My Life and Loves, by Patricia Rae Kessler

Review Beverly Hills Times Between each line in Kessler's book we feel the sadness, heartbreak, loneliness, abandonment, physical, mental and emotional transformations she has endured to stay in the game despite life's brutal challenges. Throughout each phase of her life, regardless of her circumstances at the time, it s the ultimate self-realization she acknowledge, and accepts that happiness is after all not as dependent on another as much as it is within ourselves. "Writing this book was painful, emotionally draining and exhausting. I had to look at, and relive everything. I had to disclose personal things knowing that there would be people who would not be happy with my truth. But in the end, I am fine with the decisions I made writing this book. I feel that telling the truth is important to myself, my family and those who read my book. I have not always chosen wealthy men, which put me in a position to have to work to support myself. But I felt that a hardworking man who is generous is better than a wealthy man who is not. The paths I have chosen have not been easy, and many of my friends and family have questioned the choices I have made. But in the end I believe through pain comes growth; with growth comes strength; and with strength one can begin to build a strong foundation of hope for change no matter what our age." Page after page of My Life and Loves is a self-help guide for readers in the realization that regardless of the ups and downs and rocks thrown in our way along our journey, we like Trish can never lose our vision for goodness, happiness and love to come into our lives. --Beverly Hills TimesJackie Kallen What a story! I laughed, I cried, I was entertained, and I got a good idea of who this remarkable woman is. There's more than meets the eye. Patricia is a KNOCKOUT --Jackie Kallen, one of boxing s first and most successful female managers. Jackie's life was the inspiration for the film Against the Ropes, starring Meg Ryan.

Best PDF Ebook A Cape Town boy: A memoir of growing up, 1940 to 1959, by Brian Clewly Johnson

The writer was two years old when he and his mother were captured by Japanese soldiers. For the next three years, he was imprisoned in a concentration camp near Shanghai, China. After repatriation to Britain in 1945, he lived with a variety of relatives. At age nine, he moved to South Africa and, for the next eight years, was educated at boarding schools. The regime at one particular school was harsh; he had to elude the attentions of predatory, cruel teachers. The country was then ruled by a Calvinist Afrikaner elite who embraced the concept of white supremacy; they believed 'non-whites' would always be 'hewers of wood and carriers of water' (as their Bible foretold). The world knew this system of government as apartheid, and it persisted for 45 years, until Nelson Mandela was freed. This memoir draws a picture of what it was like to live as a boy in that era. And how the experience shaped the writer as a young adult.

What will your family think about some of your deeper revelations? Brian Johnson seems to have bared all in this memoir of his first twenty years on this earth. But has he? Given a sniff of hidden secrets, the human condition cries out for more. I think Johnson has done a good job and told his reader just enough. He is a very good writer and while the book is a brief read it is a fascinating one.

The Making of a Hero by Captain of Infantry Daniel J Hill, St. Augustine FL By Bob Evans Captain of Infantry Daniel J Hill St Augustine.[Why Tom Bragg Fought] 1) Frustration with the lot dealt him in life . He was punishing himself for his own shortcomings. 2) He wasn’t fighting individuals or groups he was fighting the world because it had short changed him - fighting back. 3) Fighting and being able to endure punishment was the one thing he could do well and be anybody’s equal. The ranger-ethos was actually therapy for him. It gave him status and self image not just equal to others but superior to others. Over time being a Ranger and Ranger-leader overrode his beginnings and gave him self worth and confidence. Granted there were small relapses when for one reason or the other he was returned in his subconscious mind, to his beginnings and the unfairness of his youth; then he struck back and reverted back to the private Tom Bragg responses of fighting back at the world. To his loss. The biggest behavior modifying influence on Bragg was the other Rangers he became associated with. He was accepted, even admired for his strength, skill, and positive attitude by his Brother-Rangers who emphasized his assets and ignored his deficits, because the assets overrode the deficits. Toms psyche needed acceptance and equality - He received that amongst Rangers - That was a great healing and growth or maturation factor.Once Tom had responsible positions and duties, obligations and trust from Ranger-Brothers he responded by shunning conduct that would defame or injure, not primarily himself, but the Ranger reputation and image. After he was placed in leadership positions he became almost obsessed with his responsibility to train, improve and protect his subordinates and set the example in personal conduct. He still possesses that and demonstrates it daily in teaching the young and being an aid to his community.Tom could always think on his feet, his fearless attitude was contagious. Who better to have next to you when putting your life on the line? There was no one that could equal Tom in a fight, hand-to-hand, or with weapons . Combat engagements are won by those willing to put everything on the line - and those led by men like Tom who know all about fighting; and Tom did give all / everything.Toms combat record is legendary - I gain a lot being able to say “I know Tom Bragg”. We served together as enlisted men in the Rangers. One of my biggest regrets and disappointments as an officer was that I could never beg, barrow, or steal enough to get Tom Bragg assigned to my unit - a shame - we’d have dazzled the enemy and the U.S. Army, with science and stupefied them with footwork. Unfortunately as Tom said “yeah we’d have done that alright but ended up private E-1’s at Leavenworth prison”- it might have been worth it. As an officer and Toms Commander I would have never issued an order without him throwing holly-water on it. If you want to defeat I’S’I’S and Terrorism today call Master Sergeant Tom Bragg back to active duty and order him to sort it out, it wouldn’t be pretty - job done.Faith, instilled in Tom young, God, and His benevolent protection, has been a tremendous influence on Bragg - He Tom, has attempted and succeeded in passing on Gods guidance and protection through his teaching, guiding and mentoring the young and subordinates. The biggest event and greatest personal achievement in Toms life was his inauguration into the Ranger Hall of Fame - That is the ultimate acceptance and honor in life that any soldier could even dream of and hope for. Some say even congruent to the Medal Of Honor. He has overcome, adapted and conquered. There is no comparison to Master Sergeant, Ranger Tomas A Bragg, and that lost seventeen year old floundering youth that left Nankipooh Ga. seeking a place in the world. He is today one of the greatest men /soldiers and success stories I know of - “A Hero” -“A Great Read”. Very Inspiring, he overcame tremendous odds to achieve Ranger Hall of Fame status. Thomas is very raw and honest in this book. A very funny read on such serious subjects!

Pretty roughly written but understandable given the authors past education By 10mmg Interesting life story of never giving up and accepting can't for an answer. Pretty roughly written but understandable given the authors past education. Some sections you had to read twice to understand the point. Some chapters rambled and I wasn't sure why the story went where it did. Almost reads like a diary or journal. A worth while read

This is the life story of Eleanor Carlson Flanders, a woman whose first home was a tent sitting out on the plains of western Kansas and who, as the oldest of seven siblings and daughter of a farmer, lived through the Depression, Dust Bowl, World War II, and a series of personal challenges to eventually become an influential community leader of the town of Longmont, Colorado. With a degree in journalism and finally having the time and inclination to look back on her long life, she wrote this memoir in her nineties, hoping to provide a woman's voice from her generation and a first-person witness to the major historical events of 20th C. America.

By David Orndoff I am a little biased since Eleanor Flanders is my aunt and sister of my mother Elizabeth or "Bobie". I found the memoir fascinating and compelling, a great read. I had no concept of the difficulty of life on the prairie during the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl. Life was hard. Eleanor describes this part of her journey very well in a very optimistic way. I had a little trouble relating to her life events in Longmont, Colorado, since I never lived there. But the memoir truly reveals what a grand ol' lady Eleanor is. I am proud to be one of her nephews. And the last chapter has some great advice for living a robust, healthy life. Go Eleanor!!! David K. Orndoff, 715 Highland, Helena, MT 59601

As the oldest of seven children, she learned responsibility early on which stayed with her the rest of her life. She carried her verve and love of life on into her life at the University of Colorado and the following years of her life. This would be a very good read for younger people whose lives are so remote from what Eleanor describes. It is written with humor and great insight into the lives of her era.

It was a time of innocence for author Carmen James Lee, growing up on a rural farm in North Dakota in the 1950s. In The Innocent Days of a North Dakota Farm Boy, he shares a nostalgic collection of stories telling about his experiences as a child during a much simpler time. In this memoir, he narrates how he walked in the fresh snow to milk the cows with a kerosene lantern in his hand, what it was like attending a one-room school, and how he sawed a huge hay stack in half with a rope made of barbwire. Recalling a fun-filled youth, Lee tells about his challenges, his dream, his successes, and his failures. The Innocent Days of a North Dakota Farm Boy shares real-life stories of a North Dakota boy growing up and experiencing these and many more fun and exciting things-from plowing with a tiny, two-bottom plow behind the Ford tractor to marching in the school band at the Indianapolis 500 car race.

"Cloudbusting was inspired by a book that I found in a shop. . . Written by a guy called Peter Reich, and it's called A Book of Dreams. And it's very unusual, beautiful book, written by this man through the eyes of himself when he was a child, looking at his father, and the relationship between them. Very special relationship, his father meant so much to him."  —Kate Bush  This famous book, the inspiration behind Kate Bush's 1985 hit song "Cloudbusting," is the extraordinary account of life as friend, confidant, and child of the brilliant but persecuted Austrian psychoanalyst Wilhelm Reich. Peter, his son, shared with his father the revolutionary concept of a world where dream and reality are virtually indistinguishable, and the sense of mission which set him and his followers apart from the rest of the human race.  Here, Peter Reich writes vividly and movingly of the mysterious experiences he shared with his father: of flying saucers; the "cloudbuster" rain-makers, and the FDA narks; and of the final tragic realization of his father's death, which woke him up to the necessity of living out his life in an alien world. Already regarded as a modern classic, A Book of Dreams is not only a beautifully written narrative of a remarkable friendship and collaboration, but a loving son's heartfelt tribute to a loving father.

That is how we discovered this moving, if somewhat curious, book. The Book of Dreams tells the true story of a man (Peter Reich) recalling (through a series of flashbacks) his close and loving relationship with his father - the famous scientist Wilhelm Reich. Wilhelm Reich was at the forefront of scientific thinking on human sexuality and, in particular, the 'Cosmic Orgone Energy Theory' in the 1930s and '40s. He wrote many books on the subject, including the then enlightening 'The function of the Orgasm.' He also experimented with various forms of energy, attempting to capture 'Orgone' - energy in its purest form. Together with his young son, Peter, he went on to build a machine that could affect cloud formations, capture 'Orgone' and, to all intents and purposes, make clouds rain. Although the book touches on many interesting scientific ideas, the book concentrates mostly on Peters memories, on the love, devotion and encouragement he received from his father. On his father's insistence that he stay in touch with his feelings and not become hard like most people in the world -hardness in people, Reich senior believed, made people ill. He didn't want Peter to suffer from that illness as he grew up. Reich senior was later arrested for his beliefs and his experiments and died soon after in prison. Much of his research was destroyed by 'the authorities,' leaving a (still) young Peter with only his memories, most of which as an adult he could only recall through his dreams. Informative, gripping and eminently readable.

18 of 18 people found the following review helpful. A beautiful memoir By Percy Blakeney Even though it's a pricy out-of-print book, A Book of Dreams is worth the money. The language is beautiful and the way the story unfolds is really great. I should have bought this ten years ago--if you're on the fence, just do it. Peter Reich perfectly captures the experiences of dreams and childhood. But I have to disagree with the comments about Patti Smith's lyrics. I just finished the book and looked up her lyrics, and they don't seem to be Peter's words at all. If they were, she would have known that Peter rode on the tractor with Tom, not Wilhelm. She just loosely bases the song on this story.

13 of 14 people found the following review helpful. You Must Be Brave By Brian Forrest A son's memories of his father, Wilhelm Reich, during his last years. At times you feel as though you are standing next to Dr. Reich as he shares his feelings, saying to his son "I may be killed. You must be brave."Peter's memory of the FDA Agents, who came to Organon to supervise the destruction of the Orgone Accumulators, is particularly stunning and vivid--YOU ARE THERE.Kate Bush's song, Cloudbusting, is based on this book.

Former Chicago police officer and Outfit associate Fred Pascente is the man who links Tony Spilotro, a central character in Nicholas Pileggi’s Casino and one of Chicago’s most notorious mob figures, to William Hanhardt, chief of detectives of the Chicago Police Department. Pascente and Spilotro grew up together on Chicago’s Near West Side, and as young toughs they were rousted and shaken down by Hanhardt. While Spilotro became one of the youngest made men in Chicago Outfit history, Pascente was drafted into the army and then joined the police department. Soon taken under Hanhardt’s wing, Pascente served as Hanhardt’s fixer and bagman on the department for more than a decade. At the same time, Pascente remained close to Spilotro, making frequent trips to Las Vegas to party with his old friend while helping to rob the casinos blind. As a policeman he led a double life, doing genuine police work under Hanhardt’s tutelage while at the same time keeping an eye out for opportunities for bribery and theft. His position on both sides of the law gave him unrivaled knowledge of the workings of Chicago’s deeply rooted culture of corruption.   Mob Cop details the decline of traditional organized crime in the United States, and reveals information about the inner workings of the Outfit that has never been publicly released. Fred Pascente’s colorful stories of crooked cops and dangerous criminals make his memoir a matchless tell-all.

Mob Cop: My Life of Crime in the Chicago Police Department, by Fred Pascente, Sam Reaves

Review "Worthwhile glimpse into the schizoid world of a corrupt cop.” —Kirkus Reviews“A tale from the underworld that’s rich in Outfit history and the characters that come with it. Pascente’s memories unspool like letters from a dark and fading Chicago.”—Jeff Coen, author of Family Secrets: The Case That Crippled the Chicago Mob“A detailed, gritty account of growing up around Grand Avenue and of life on both sides of the law, from someone who was a mob associate and a Chicago police officer—at the same time. Sam Reaves’s commentary that goes along with Fred Pascente’s story is excellent.”—John J. Binder, author of The Chicago Outfit "The book is chock full of the dark side of both the police department and the mob but it is surprisingly also full of strong friendship, family devotion, unswerving loyalty and at times had me laughing out loud at some of the ridiculous antics on both sides of the law." —Chicago History Cop“Pascente’s tale is fascinating.” —Library Journal“Fans of mobster stories will want to grab a copy of the foul-mouthed but fascinating memoir of Fred Pascente, the corrupt former Chicago cop who was tight with Tony Spilotro and a host of Las Vegas ne’er-do-wells. Written with novelist Sam Reaves, the book is titled “Mob Cop: My Life of Crime in the Chicago Police Department.” A friend and business partner of former Crazy Horse Too boss Rick Rizzolo, Pascente also was a member of Nevada’s casino Black Book. Pascente died in 2014, so I’m guessing the book tour is out.” —Las Vegas Review-Journal

About the Author Fred Pascente was a Chicago police officer for twenty-six years and professional thief with close ties to organized crime. He died in 2014. Sam Reaves is the author of ten novels and has served as president of the Midwest chapter of the Mystery Writers of America. He lives in Evanston, Illinois.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Life In Chicago By Andy in Washington “Chicago was a right town then. The fix was in. The dicks took their end without a beef”.-Henry Gandorff, “The Sting”“Mob Cop” is the story of Fred Pascente, a Chicago police officer and detective for two decades-and exactly the type of person Henry Gandorff was talking about. Pascente is, by most any definition of the term, a dishonest cop. This book, co-written with Sam Reeves, is Pascente’s story.=== The Good Stuff ===* Pascente is nothing if not honest with his readers. He freely admits to any number of scams, cons, shakedowns, robberies, and numerous other felonies, and there is a minimum of rationalization, justification or convoluted reasoning. Mostly he just admits to being a plain old crook, out to get his piece of the pie.* While I have no doubt that the publisher, and their lawyers, went over the manuscript very carefully, there are quite a number of names discussed, along with their misdeeds. It is hard not to get the impression that there were no honest Chicago cops at all.* The tale is told in simple language and is quite readable. (Almost. See below). Reeves did a nice job of keeping the feel and voice of Pascente throughout the work, and the language and idioms used give a real “street flavor” to the book.* While crooked cops usually do not keep copious notes to donate to their college libraries, the book does come across as reasonably well researched-or at least as anything having to do with Chicago criminals could be. It ties in well with other books I have read on the subject, and stands the test of “reasonableness”.* No matter what your personal opinions of Detective Pascente might be, you certainly end the book with a reasonable portrait of the man, his motivations, values and lifestyle.=== The Not-So-Good Stuff ===* Much of the book’s dialog is in the “Chicago Street Vernacular.” It is not always clear what is going on, as the language is, by design, obtuse and open to misinterpretation. I appreciate Reeves’ efforts in keeping the original flavor, but a little more translation would have helped.* In most “true crime” books I have read, the criminal at least generates some sympathy with the reader. In this case, it did not. More than anything, I wanted to reach through the pages and slap the guy.* There were a number of named characters, and between the fuzzy language and Pascente’s own non-calibrated moral compass, it was tough to separate the good guys from the bad guys. That said, I am not sure there were any good guys.=== Summary ===The book wasn’t quite as much fun as I expected, and was really somewhat sad and frightening. I always knew Chicago was not Walden Pond, but never suspected as bad as this book makes it seem. Hopefully reality is somewhere in the middle.Still, I would recommend it for true-crime fans, as well as anyone interested in how things really worked in the City of Chicago.=== Disclaimer ===I was able to read an advance copy through the courtesy of the publisher and Netgalley.

I wasn't impressed with his stories and the information in the book seemed basically what I have heard before from reading about the family secrets trial or the book when corruption was king. I feel bad for Fred being now deceased and loosing his pension. He deserved to loose it. There are some interesting bits of information about Bill Hanhardt.

This book is hard to put down.If you were in Chicago in the 70's and early eighties the names in this book is like a who's who of the Chicago outfit. The author certainly knew many hard line criminals. The fact that he was a police officer is pretty amazing because they moved in the same circles as the outfit.Drinking with and doing scores with the likes of Tony Spilotro and many others the author grew up with in the forties and fifties lends to many wild tales. He names the names and all the places that made Chicago the wild town it was.His rise and fall as a police officer is kind of sad but he certainly did a lot of things he should not have done.If you were not aware of a lot of these people it won't make much sense as to what he did.I think it is a great book.

In June of 1985, while her teenage sons held their half-sister down, Theresa Cross beat her nineteen-year-old daughter Sheila unconscious and then stuffed her into a 2´ x 2´ storage locker. After three days, the knocking, kicking, and cries stopped. Theresa and her sons dumped the girl’s body in the desolate High Sierras. The summer before, Theresa had dug a bullet out of her daughter Suesan’s chest with a paring knife. When Suesan failed to recover (without benefit of doctors or hospital), Theresa and her two sons drove the delirious girl to the mountains, doused her with gasoline, and set her on fire. For nearly nine years, Theresa Cross Knorr got away with murder, until her youngest daughter, Terry Knorr Graves, finally found a cop who believed the incredible story of her two murdered sisters.?That story is all here, the shocking life of a woman whose violence, jealousy, rage, and domination led to a brutally heinous crime of ruthless ferocity.

Mother's Day, by Dennis McDougal

Amazon.com Review "Theresa Cross was a toxic mother, but the maternity myth blinded, deafened, and silenced those that might have stopped her." Dennis McDougal, with his flair for storytelling and his eye for vivid detail, is one of the best of true crime writers. In this book he profiles a very dark character indeed: a woman for whom neither her life nor her fantasies ever got beyond her sad, narrow world of severe men, twisted religious ideas, beatings, sexual jealousy, horror fiction and movies, and obsessive housecleaning. She had several husbands, one of whom she killed, until she ended up as a single mother with two boys and three girls. Then she began to torture and kill the girls, one after another, as they became old enough that their beauty made her angry. Prepare to enter a closed-off realm of nightmare, when you read this one.

I can't believe the horror the kids had to go through just to live in Teressa's twisted world and the scars it left on her children into adulthood. Upon reading it, I had nightmares for a while. This is the only book that has had that much of an impact on me, I still find it amazing. The author, I think, does a fantastic job with detailing scenery, dialogue, etc. It's a wonderful book. Too bad it's true...

Most books of this nature provide a full ending to the story. This story has no ending for the reader. I'm sure that anyone else who reads this book will agree that they are left in suspense. I want to know what happened to Theresa Cross after she was initially arrested. I would like to read about the court case and what transpired while in the court room. At the very least, I would like to know what her sentence was. I have looked on the internet and have not been successful in finding any pertinent information regarding Theresa Cross. I would really like to see a sequel to the book, Mother's Day. According to the other reviews, the story was also discussed on a talk show. Does anyone know the name of the talk show? I would like to get the transcripts and would like to know that this disturbed lady got what she deserved....

When the first crime was so early in the book, I couldn't imagine what the rest of the book was about. Oh my... page after page of crimes that go on for years! Really enjoyed the author's writing style and the way the story was delivered. Thanks, Dennis! Keep writing!

This book is not about turning lemons into lemonade. It's about liking lemons. And no one likes them more than Aaron "Wheelz" Fotheringham

When asked by ESPN, "How do you define spina bifida?" Aaron responded, "A great opportunity."

Consumed by the simple but logical belief that riding is more fun than walking, Aaron took his wheelchair and turned it into a toy, playing and practicing on it until there was no place he couldn't go. After beating his peers in all the BMX competitions he could enter, Aaron became the unicorn of the Nitro Circus team, the ultimate dream of every BMX rider and skateboarder alike.

"The effect that Wheelz has on the crowd is out of this world. I mean, we have the best in the world of action sports, and more people come to see Wheelz than anybody else."Quote from Travis Pastrana, -X Games gold medalist and Nitro Circus organizer, leader and performer.

Aaron's story includes pain, determination, failure, motivation, and unimagined success. And yet these things are incidental to the real story. What makes his story great is that his attitude is contagious, and Wheelz is anything but quarantined.

"What a fantastic story of one determined kid with a great outlook on life! Everyone can learn and be inspired by Wheelz! That is what I love most about this book, it's applicable to everyone." Reader review.

About the Author Steve Fotheringham has a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Weber State University, A Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Counseling, and a Doctorate Degree in Educational Administration from The University of Arizona. But the only credentials he claims for this book is that he was an eyewitness. With family and news videos, text messages, emails, Aaron's written stories, journal entries, magazine and news articles, and DVR recordings that cover much of his life, coupled with the fact that Steve and his wife Kaylene were there most of the time, he was able to write an accurate and inspiring biography.

I thought it was going to be about a young man dealing with a disability who had big dreams. That's just scratching the surface. This book chronicles the story of an incredible family that have witnessed their adopted son's development into an international WCMX star. Told by the father of the family, we get an inside look into the creation of a new family, the creation of a new sport and the creation of an attitude of living that could benefit us all. Easy to read and hard to put down.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Great Book - You Won't Be Disappointed! By Jac When I picked up this book I knew I was going to learn about an amazing athlete based on the cover! A man in a wheelchair doing a handplant at the skate park…WHAT? And boy did I learn. I learned about perseverance, dedication, attitude, and a desire to do what every other kid Aaron was hanging out was doing. Wheelz has fans around the world which is not surprising at all because of his devotion to a sport that not only inspires others, but pushes everyone’s thinking about a person with disabilities so far out of the box. What I didn’t expect this book to be was a “How to” for parents. How to not hold your child back from the things they want to try, even if it is a bit scary. How to encourage, support and love no matter what! How to fight for what they need. Steve Fotheringham tells stories in a way that makes you smile, laugh, cheer and cry. Being able to watch the video clips that he was referring to because the links were provided in the book was a perfect addition. So well written!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Aaron Fotheringham has done some amazing things. He's successfully landed multiple backflips in competition By Krista Van Dolzer As the father of WCMX (or wheelchair motocross, for the uninitiated), Aaron Fotheringham has done some amazing things. He's successfully landed multiple backflips in competition, served as a wheelchair stuntman in movies and TV shows, and toured the world with Nitro Circus and a host of charitable organizations. But it's his attitude that's truly remarkable. When a well-meaning preacher once assured him that he'd be able to walk after he was resurrected, Aaron's immediate response was, "What makes you think I'll want to?" Other kids had to leave their bikes outside as soon as they got to school, but he got to ride his bike everywhere he went.WHEELZ affords its readers a behind-the-scenes look at Aaron's life and the rise of this bone-crushing sport. It's a one-of-a-kind book about a one-of-a-kind kid who never thought much of the fact that his legs didn't really work, and I highly recommend it.

The journal of Prussian Major General Benno von Studnitz was originally published in 1891 in a very limited German language edition. Now, translated and edited by his great-grandson, the General's journal appears for the first time in English. Spanning the years from 1849, when as a young cadet he was involved in fighting 'the rebellious mob' (as he put it) in Breslau, Silesia, the journal also vividly recounts his experiences and actions as an officer in the German–Danish War of 1864, as well as the Austro-Prussian War of 1866, where he was involved in the battles at Dornbach, Kissingen, Aschaffenburg, Tauberbischofsheim, and Gerchsheim. He then fought through the entire Franco-German War, where he participated in the battles at Vionville, Metz and Ladon, Seris, Bellevue, Vendome, Monnaie, Montoire, St. Amande, Le Mans, Coulie, Beaune de la Rolande, Couteulle, and Jouanville. After a long and successful career of thirty-seven years in the Prussian Cavalry, Studnitz retired as a Brigade commander and wrote his memoirs, calling upon the journals he had written during the actual events. Studnitz met and interacted with many of the interesting personalities of the late 19th Century in Germany, such as the future Emperor Frederick III, which encounters are described in an open, honest and witty style. While concentrating on his wartime experiences, his journal also follows Studnitz in the peacetime Cavalry, giving the reader a little-known (to English readers) insight into the daily life of a high-ranking Prussian officer. Not just some ponderous dry tome recounting facts and figures, Studnitz brings to life a vital period of European military history, recounted by an officer who as a participant was intimately involved and actually there.REVIEWS … A fascinating read, recommended.” The Foreign Correspondent

The Studnitz Wars: The Wartime Journals of a Prussian Cavalry General 1849-71, by Gilbert von Studnitz

About the Author The author: Benno von Studnitz (1830-1916), a member of one of the oldest German noble families originating in Moravia in the 14th Century, was the only child of a Major and battalion commander in the Royal Prussian 1st Guards Regiment of Foot. His father died when Studnitz was only four, and his mother remarried to Count von Zedlitz und Trutzschler, in whose household he grew up with step-siblings, one of whom was Count Robert, the later Prussian Minister of Culture. After graduation from the Knight Academy in Liegnitz, Studnitz entered the 1st Cuirassiers Regiment in Breslau in 1848. Following promotion to 2nd Lieutenant in 1850, he transferred to the 4th Cuirassiers Regiment in Munster. As a Captain he participated with his regiment in the 1864 campaign against Denmark, as well as in the 1866 campaign against Austria. In late 1866 he was appointed squadron commander in the newly created Dragoons Regiment number 9 in Lingen, where he became a Major in 1869. In July 1871 he transferred to the 3rd Baden Dragoons Regiment in Karlsruhe, and in 1875 as Lieutenant Colonel became commander of the 6th Dragoons Regiment. In 1878 he was promoted to Colonel and in 1883 became commander of the 13th Cavalry Brigade in Munster, being promoted to Major General in 1884. The following year he left active service, after disagreements with his divisional commander and retired to Breslau; something he could afford as due to inheritances and wise care of funds he had become extremely wealthy. During his service he received among other medals the Iron Cross, the Order of the Crown, and the Order of the Red Eagle, as well as being a Knight of Honor of the Order of St. John. The editor: Gilbert von Studnitz, the translator of his great-grandfather's journals, is the official genealogist of the von Studnitz Family Association which is based in Germany, and he has recently retired as a regional manager with the State of California civil service. He is also currently a City Commissioner for Historic Preservation Review in Benicia, California, where he resides with his wife and daughter.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Studnitz Wars By michael The Studnitz Wars take place in city, village, countryside, and the front line.It concerns among other things the difficulties of supply, transportation and communications. All three are done mainly by horseback causing uncertain supply, slow communications, and slower troop movement (walking). Troop movement involves getting to the front line, supply, losses,scavenging/looting whenever possible for supplies and pleasure.Communications/messaging done by horseback, sometimes rider gets lost or misdirected.Studnitz being an officer, had different duties when not at the front line - where to have dinner, sleep,at whose house. Another important duty was beverage supply (champagne, wine, beer, grog, schnapps etc.).Beverages shared with troops when possible (good man!). Punishment for occasional drinking on duty not too harsh. The writing seems informal, interesting, full of what some people might consider trivia, (the things that make up our day to day). The book was pure pleasure, never boring, a sense of having been there.Highly recommended!
