In 1974, the author and her husband decided to leave the life they had been living in Europe and move to a small farm in Northern California with their two young boys. The book tells of the hard but satisfying work that made up their new life. They had to learn an amazing variety of skills to grow and raise all of their food; cooking on a woodstove, baking bread, making cheese, preserving fruits and vegetables, tanning hides, raising, slaughtering and butchering animals. That life also involved politics when starting an environmental organization which took on the U.S. government, a lumber giant, and Southern Pacific Railroad. Plus there were three years of homeschooling for the boys. In their efforts to live the simple life they encountered a colorful array of eccentrics: the old timers, the dope growers, the loggers, the ranchers, the successful, and those plagued by bad luck. It was an amazing experience of learning, laughter, and accommodation to the land and weather. The author is now at work on a book about her world travels and further adventures.

Haven't we all dreamed of escaping the pace and pressure of our lives and returning to a simpler life? Ms. Brezinski's detailed, often humorous and charming account of nine years of near-self-sufficiency opened my eyes to the brutal pace our ancestors maintained just to survive. I was left with barely enough energy to warm dinner in the microwave and press the remote control on the TV.

As a small-town Midwestern girl, currently raising 2 young children in the Bay Area, I really connected with this book! I appreciated all of the detail about the family's self-sufficiency processes in the kitchen, garden, around the home, and even in the education of their children. Really amazing and educational! I will apply many of these lessons and values to my own life as a suburban stay at home mother. This book has also inspired me to journal about my life experiences as a mother, wife, and homemaker so in the future I can look back on my family's amazing experiences throughout the years and remember details which may otherwise be forgotten. Thank you to the author for sharing your story.As an added note, last year my husband and I took our children to watch a lunar eclipse at Whiskeytown recreation area, which is near where this story took place. A very beautiful area! All of a sudden I'm feeling the urge to drive up again and maybe take a detour through Hayfork. :-)

Fascinating account of country living By Maxine Tano The Simple Life is a delightfully detailed account of a family leaving not only city life, but the European lifestyle to get back to the land. Beautifully written, the reader immediately becomes acquainted with the family as they find a house and land in a Northern California milling town. We learn everything from bee keeping to how to slaughter and use every inch of a pig. At times you just laugh out loud with a hilarious account of eating unidentified mushrooms at others you learn of the stresses back to the land folks face often leading to divorce and pain.I would recommend this book to anyone, old or young, who considers leaving the rat race to grow their own food and live off the land. As Ms. Brezinski notes besides farming it is essential to become involved with the community and take a stand against the Big Guys when you health and water supply is threatened.Thanks for the remarkable 9 year journey.

About the Author

SIR CURTLY AMBROSE is one of the most impressive cricket players in history. The management of 20th Century Fox, who had missed all the rights to this franchise, quickly wanted to rehabilitate their standing by creating a first-class product in the form of Alien. Walter Hill, not being able to cope with the expectations of the studio, decided to leave. Many candidates wanted the vacant position of director, but the post was filled by Ridley Scott. It was originally allocated a budget of $4.8 million, but when Scott presented the sketches of his vision of a futuristic setting, the budget was doubled. O'Bannon took an active part in making the film. He convinced the director to return to the original plot with the alien spaceship and he advised him to invite painters Chris Foss and Jean Giraud to the project, both of whom he had previously worked with on Dune. But the main assistance that O'Bannon gave to Scott was in introducing him to the book Necronomicon by Hans Rudolf Giger. The director was amazed by the works of the Swiss painter. Soon Giger proceeded to create the image of a Xenomorph, and became carried away by the process. He also created the design of the alien ship with the eggs and the face-huggers. - - - The most important new hero, Master Yoda, was not human. It was an animated doll. Initially, the form of Yoda was far from what we know now. Lucas showed some of his sketches to Stewart Freeborn, maker of creatures. Taking on board Lucas’ concept, Freeborn did a fantastic job to create the Yoda we know and love. Many of the unique features, special to Yoda, were imagined by Freeborn. The most important element of Master Yoda is his intelligent eyes, which were borrowed from Albert Einstein. George Lucas knew that Master Yoda was the key character, on which depended the fate of the film. Therefore, shooting the doll came with a mountain of responsibility. A few people controlled the green man at the same time. One person brought his voice to life, while another was moving its ears and hands, and a third controlled the eyes and facial expressions on his face. - - - "When we were filming Titanic, we did not think about success. We thought that we squandered a lot of money, because we are over budget. That is when we started filming, we thought that a bit to make money - to spend as planned only a $100 million. We spent two hundred and decided that doomed: we would not earn a penny! Rather, it was already a question of how much we would lose - $50 million or more? And then it turned out that the film hit the jackpot. Everyone was shocked. Ask yourself - what was it that work? This film has just touched the desired string. She has a fresh style that I have not encountered in any other book that I've read. I loved her examples of God's "sense of humor." By Hopeful patriot If the people only knew of Ambassador Lee Wanta's story -- his loyal work under President Reagan in relation to the Soviet Union; how he was stabbed in the back and put in prison because of the vast sums he accumulated under Title 18, Section 6, Executive Order 12333; how his financial rewards were then stolen by the corrupt Powers That Be in government and the Federal Reserve while he was in jail; and how he wants to keep his promise to President Reagan and use the money he earned for the benefit of the American people and to fix the American economy -- they would stand up and demand his rights to his own money be honored.

After reading this book a lot of things that are happening in America will make sense and you will begin to understand the big picture. I often wondered why this country was so screwed up and why the banking and financial systems work the way they did including the media. After reading this book it helps me understand what is going on how it got to this point and what the plan is for the future .

Joaquin Murietta hid in the hills, and the story of the T. Wallace More murder in Rancho Sespe in 1877 was the murder of the century. Rancho Camulos, owned by the del Valle family until 1924, signifies the last of the Californios. Today, it is owned by the descendants of August Rubel. Tales of the sycamore tree abound, and it is an icon on Highway 126, as is the tower of the Sanitary Dairy, which was ordered from the Sears, Roebuck & Company in Chicago. Oil was discovered early in Shiells Canyon and brought Texaco to town. The fruit industry prospered, and Sunkist was welcomed. Hugh Warring installed indoor plumbing in the Piru Mansion. The likes of Booty Sanchez, Marcelino Woody Ybarra, Gene Wren, Kevin Gross, Jim Fauver, and Dorothy Shiells still influence the community.

Riveting…..definitely 5-stars By Dr. M This book is a beautifully done, rich compendium of some of the very fascinating folks from Fillmore’s past.They are as diverse as it gets, ranging from murderers like Tiburcio Vasquez, Hollywood star (Mary Pickford), and pioneering photojournalist (Charles Lummis).I was most intrigued by the story of Joaquin Murrieta, who like Robin Hood who would take care for the oppressed, and the poor people would in turn protect him from the law. The rangers who finally killed him actually decapitated his head, and put it in alcohol filled jar for public display.The beautiful pictures presented with the local legends bring to life their fascinating stories and the author is successful in making the reader actually live through all those years in Fillmore.Highly Recommended.

It was very informative and pointed out the many positive advances and positive changes Mayor Barry made to make the District of Columbia (DC) a better place to live and attract tourism. It highlighted his lifelong dedication to civil rights starting as a young man and his never ending quest to promote justice and to help poor people, senior citizens, young people, minority businesses, among others. This book gave me and should give potential readers a new found respect for a very intelligent, kind, and passionate human being who was obviously called to be a leader and serve the citizens of DC in the most profound, unselfish manner. As a former resident of DC, I know he was the best mayor DC has ever had and the residents of DC loved, supported him, and ensured his victory every time he ran for mayor of DC or member of the City Council. This is a very good read and I have shared this book with my young adult daughter who cannot seem to put it down once she started reading it. This book also helps in providing a perspective on how a major city, such as DC, is typically run.

Written with an endearing warmth and cogency, it brought back memories and provided clarity to certain events I witnessed. Yes, he brags and evades at times. And yes, he admits his weaknesses. But he was smart and energetic. And his role in improving this sleepy southern town is not exaggerated.

About the Author Tom Marquard grew up in Fairview Park, Ohio. Work relocations took he and his family to Boston, Buffalo and finally to the Detroit area, where he settled in 1976 . Tom retired in 2010 after 40 years in the health insurance industry and resides in Dearborn, Michigan with his wife Peggy. He has three wonderful children and five amazing grandchildren. Tom’s passion for history led him to become the family’s historian. Boxes of documents, photos and memorabilia ended up in his possession and he considered it important to record and share those memories with current and future generations as well as for posterity. His original intent was to put it all down on paper strictly for family. Peggy convinced him to do it in book format and self-publish the valuable memoirs and history. In 2008 he published his first book with Lulu Press about his great grandfather on his mother’s side, “The 1864 Civil War Diary and Brief Biography of James B. Essig.” His second book was completed in 2013 based on his Uncle Cyril Marquard’s 1920 travel journal of the epic 1920 family trip out West, “Trains, Plains & Automobiles,” published by CreateSpace, an Amazon company. Since then he has worked exclusively on this book, his most difficult but most rewarding endeavor to date. All three books are available on Amazon. It fits with all the unique and interesting families that made this country great. It gives you new incite to the greater Cleveland, Ohio area and shows the growth of the family intertwined with the growth of real estate and home building.The Marquard Mansion or "Big House" as it was sometimes referred to is a story onto itself.The real story is about the patriarch Phil H. and his children and relatives. Phil was dedicated to his family, friends and to helping those less fortunate. The lives and travels of the Marquards throughout the years and the good that came from Phil's businesses that also benefited the various charities and his faith are truly worthy of a book such as this one.The real stories about real people and their lives are always better than fiction and this book is no exception !

John Steinbreder shares his anecdotes and details in such a way that he reflects his background as a journal and magazine writer. There is always a new detail to learn from each place that the author visits in his traveling.The only thing that I feel would be a great addition to the book are pictures of the golf courses and places. Even though Steinbreder describes them in a rich manner, pictures would greatly complement this book.I obtained a copy of this book through the Early Reviewers program from LibraryThing, and I would like to thank Taylor Trade Publishing for providing the book. The cover and design of the book is gorgeous, and after finishing reading, it would look great on any good shelf.

Accomplished and award-winning sportswriter John Steinbreder has written not merely a golf book, nor merely a travel book, but has achieved an entertaining compilation and travelogue of golf adventures that will delight both golfers and travelers.Steinbreder puts the reader smack into the middle of each of his golf journeys: from the history and culture of the geographic location of each course, to the lunches, to the post-round dinners, delectably described in detail, to the accompanying tours of the countryside or city. His use of sensory and concrete details encourage the reader to feel as if he or she is along for the ride. Historical, sociological, and economic backgrounds come to life through Steinbreder's humorous and insightful interactions with his playing partners and those he meets along the way.For golfers who'd like to know where they should play their next round, Steinbreder has done all the research – course architects, tips to make the birdies, course ambiance, restaurants and menus, activities to pursue when not on the course, and even shopping suggestions for gifts. The author covers the golfing scene around the globe all while connecting the past to the present, and even occasionally teasing us with what might be the future. Any golfer of any ability can appreciate the dream of teeing it up in far away places and finding the same simultaneous glory and frustration pursuing our most silly and wonderful game. I loved it!!
