Notorious for his cleverness and daring, John Hawkwood was the most feared mercenary in early Renaissance Italy. Born in England, Hawkwood began his career in France during the Hundred Years' War and crossed into Italy with the famed White Company in 1361. From that time until his death in 1394, Hawkwood fought throughout the peninsula as a captain of armies in times of war and as a commander of marauding bands during times of peace. He achieved international fame, and city-states constantly tried to outbid each other for his services, for which he received money, land, and, in the case of Florence, citizenship―a most unusual honor for an Englishman. When Hawkwood died, the Florentines buried him with great ceremony in their cathedral, an honor denied their greatest poet, Dante.

William Caferro's ambitious account of Hawkwood is both a biography and a study of warfare and statecraft. Caferro has mined more than twenty archives in Britain and Italy, creating an authoritative portrait of Hawkwood as an extraordinary military leader, if not always an admirable human being.

John Hawkwood: An English Mercenary in Fourteenth-Century Italy, by William Caferro

Review

This is much more than a biography in the ordinary sense of the word... An excellent contribution to our understanding of both the mercenary phenomenon and the history of Italy in the late fourteenth century.

(Speculum)

Engaging book... Caferro has made sense of the life of a mercenary captain, who during his career influenced diplomacy, altered finances, and changed lives in fourteenth-century Italy.

(Duane Osheim Renaissance Quarterly)

A model of clear writing and an authoritative treatment of the military and political situation in Italy from the 1360s.

(John E. Law History)

It is... so well written and provides such a gripping account of John Hawkwood and his milieu that it will surely gain a wide audience among general readers as well.

(David S. Bachrach Historian)

The depth of Caferro's archival research has established him as Hawkwood's preeminent biographer.

(Dane Swango Comitatus)

Meets a real need... well researched and clearly presented, an important work for everyone interested in fourteenth-century Italy and medieval war.

(John Larner English Historical Review)

Superb biography... Sterling piece of work.

(Niccolò Capponi Journal of Military History)

A useful read for anyone interested in Renaissance Italy, the evolution of the practice of war, and even the interrelationship of art and society.

(NYMAS Review)

Caferro's archival research in England and throughout northern and central Italy has given us a firm historical picture of a mercenary who during his lifetime was already becoming the stuff of legend. Unlike King Arthur and Robin Hood, Hawkwood was a historical figure about whom there was a great deal that really could be discovered, and Caferro has done the discovering. This is a readable book that is broadly informative about warfare and its techniques immediately after the Hundred Years' War and an outstanding work of scholarship.

William Caferro's ambitious account of Hawkwood is both a biography and a study of warfare and statecraft. Caferro has mined more than twenty archives in Britain and Italy, creating an authoritative portrait of Hawkwood as an extraordinary military leader, if not always an admirable human being.

Caferro's study offers a fundamental reassessment of the Italian military situation and of the mercenary system. Hawkwood's career is treated within the context of Italian society and offers a unique vantage point from which we can study the economic, social, and political impact of war.

BRILLIANT By Stephen Cooper This book will undoubtedly replace Sir John Temple-Leader's `Sir John Hawkwood (L'Acuto) Story of a Condottiere' (1889) which remained the essential biography for over one hundred years. It is a better book than Frances Stonor Saunders's `Devil's Broker' (2004) and - sad to say - it is also better than my own biography (2008).William Caferro is a careful student and spent sixteen years in producing this book. It was worth it. Despite his modesty, we learn many things we never knew. The book is first-class as well as being a thoroughly good read. Caferro's conclusions are soundly based in a study of many archives and will seldom be proved wrong.Stephen Cooper

Top Class Scholarship By JPS As another reviewer had the honesty and the (rare!) humility to acknowledge, because he also authored a biography on John Hawkwood, this book is now the reference on the most famous and most successful of the English condottiere who fought in Italy during the fourteenth century. However, it is also MUCH more than that. It is a reference on the condottiere in Italy during this period which nicely completes the works of Michael Mallett which are mostly centred on the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. It also completes the work of Kenneth Fowler on the Great Companies of the 1360s. These were made up of unemployed English, Gascon, Breton and French soldiers (although they were others as well including Catalans, Flemish and Germans). Many of them followed Du Guesclin and went to fight with him in Spain. Some stayed in France and continued their rampages, but many others and John Hawkwood and a few thousands of English soldiers went to fight in Italy for new paymasters, once the Kingdoms of England and of France were at peace after the treaty of Bretigny (in 1360).I do share another reviewer's little quibbles. Although I do not believe they are sufficiently important for rating this book less than five stars, there are a few things in the book which made me jump. One was the reference to the heir apparent to the throne of England as the "English Dauphin". It should, of course, have been the Prince of Wales, with the term "Dauphin" who was initially the lord of the Dauphiné, being the heir apparent to the throne of France. Also, Henry IV was not the heir apparent of Richard II, since he usurped the throne. Finally, and in addition to a couple of "Americanisms" ("Essex County instead of "the county of Essex" and "Thames River" instead of the "River Thames"), the proper name of "Enguerrand Coucy" was Enguerrand VII de Coucy, last lord of the place bearing the same name, one of the four most powerful barons of France who did in fact marry one of Edward the Third's daughter and died a prisoner of the Ottoman Turks in 1397 after the failed Crusade that ended in disaster at Nicopolis. However, the book more than make up for these few little slips simply because its contents are outstanding in many ways. The author's aim and contention was to show to what extent the condottiere phenomenon in general, and the English ones in particular, influenced and were influenced by Italy politically, militarily and economically. This is essentially what William Caferro manages to demonstrate quite convincingly throughout his book which is much more than just the biography of a successful mercenary and foreign captain. One of the main points is to show that the mercenaries in Italy were initially mostly foreign (initially largely Germans). They were recruited by the various city states, duchies and kingdoms (papacy included) precisely because they were foreign and because the various governments were reluctant to rely on civic militias. The author also shows rather well to what extent the "business prospects" for these "soldiers of fortune" were excellent in Italy given the numerous powers which were endemically contending, squabbling and fighting between themselves.A related point was the development of the condottas, the detailed contracts that the various city-states signed with the various bands of mercenaries when enlisting them. Another point very well made is that the cost of hiring these bands was often huge and this, together with these bands' exactions, could significantly impoverish many a city, with Sienna (on which the author has written a special monograph) being a prime example.A fascinating theme is the interactions between the various companies of condottiere and their various employers. The former have earned an awful reputation throughout the centuries because of their behaviours, including wholesale and indiscriminate looting, burning, killing and raping of the enemy of the moment but also of the populations and subjects of their employers. As William Caferro shows extremely well through the example of John Hawkwodd, this was at times part of their "terror tactics" and "bargaining ploys" to extract better conditions from their employers, especially when their contract was about to expire, or simply to extract "protection money", vast amounts of cash against the rather uncertain promise that they would not pillage the countryside, its towns and its villages. However, these depredations largely (but not always) took place because they were often not paid on time, not entirely paid what they were due by their employers and not adequately provisioned. It was also a way of living (or rather of surviving) when they were out of a job and turned into "free companies" (read robbers, bandits and outlaws). John Hawkwood became a master at this kind of game and skilfully extracted fortunes from many of his employers for both himself and his men.Another point made by the author and one of the basic appeals of becoming a mercenary in Italy (this was also true about fighting in France during the Hundred Years War, although perhaps to a lesser extent) was, to quote, that "service overseas blurred traditional markers and distinctions." Not only could simple soldiers and commoners who may have started off as archers become rich, but they could also in some cases become lords and own land and castles of their own, as Hawkwood and a few of his associates and "colleagues" managed to do.A further point is the close links and lasting associations that were formed in these bands of mercenaries, with the author making the point that Hawkwood attracted to his service men from his home county of Essex. However, other mercenary warlords and their companies (for instance the Gascons, the Bretons, the Germans and the Hungarians) seem to have functioned on what the author calls "the patron-client system" so that this may not have been as remarkable as the author makes it out to be.Another major point that is made is to show that Hawkwood always considered himself an Englishman above all else and that both he and his soldiers insisted that their contracts contain clauses that would allow them to return home when they wished. They were also rather reluctant to fighting against other companies made up of Englishmen. Here also, and although the author only makes the point explicitly for the Germans, this was an attitude shared by other "nationalities" of mercenaries. For instance, Bertrand Du Guesclin was, perhaps even more so than Hawkwood in Italy, serving the King of France when campaigning in Spain to put on the throne a "pro-French" candidate with the help of the "Great Companies". Even better made is the point that these foreign mercenaries provoked a patriotic sentiment on the side of their Italian employers with the author given several examples of "anti-company" leagues of cities, but also a growing "Italianisation" of the condottiere phenomenon to the extent that most of the captains were Italians by the end of the 14th and during the 15th century where they had been mostly foreign between 1320 and 1370.Other major points developed by the author are the lack of political cohesion in Italy and often within each political entity, which was something that Hawkwood skilfully exploited by relying on exiles and disaffected lords against the communes, the huge income that a successful mercenary warlord like Hawkwood could obtain when he was in a position to name his price, and how many of these mercenary captains sent part of their gains home and used them to buy up land. A further set of points is to show how the tactics developed on the English side during the first phase of the Hundred Years War, and the habit of dismounting to fight battles in particular, were "imported" to Italy and became generalised.I will end this review here, because it is getting overlong. I could go on for quite a bit more simply because I have not mentioned a number of other fascinating points discussed and developed in this valuable book. However, I guess that, by now, I should have made my point in demonstrating that this book is easily worth five stars.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Well researched, but scholarly and dry. By Bob Jarvis I won't complain about the 5 star reviews on this page. I am writing my review from the point of view of a casual military history reader who, whilst keen to pick up items of historical relevence and facts about the principal characters, also likes to be entertained along the way. This book is an extremely scholarly production full of names, dates and places, and left me bewildered trying to follow Hawkwoods movements and actions along the way. My Kindle edition also had no readable maps, or illustrations for that matter so I consider finishing the book an achievement for me.Hawkwood spent way more time in politics, mainly scheming and conniving to screw more money out of the Italian City statesmen rather than actual military campaigning. He was a shrewd warrior and successfully attracted a number of useful, known subalterns into his service; men who were certainly not renowned for their loyalty. However, it was very common for a colleague in one campaign to be the foe in the next. Fourteenth Century Italy was a nightmare of treachery, shifting alliances and downright skulduggery. That Hawkwood was one of the success stories here may give a clue as to his devious character.Bottom line for me was that the book revealed almost nothing about Hawkwood himself. Very little information was forthcoming on his relatives and friends, but this is likely due to the scarcity of actual historical sources. I was ultimately left frustrated and confused by the whole reading experience. My speed reading technique did improve however. If you have an exam to take on Italian Fourteenth Century Politics and Conflicts, then this might just be your book.Any casual history reader will likely be disappointed.

Cualquier crítica me molestaba. A veces no me parecía real.

A mother's story of how historic child sexual abuse can affect the lives of the victims. It shows the determination of a mother fighting the system and seeking justice. How she loses so much, but through her strength and tenacity, she faces the inevitable.

She supports her children at their time of need. When the trauma was buried deep within their subconscious; behaviour presents itself in an irrational manner. Being naive to this situation and not believing this could happen to her family, she has to learn fast in order to understand self-harm and suicidal thoughts. The people she meets along the way, help show her the path that can lead to a better understanding of why and how things must take their course.

She learned through heartache, how other people's feelings, can be transmitted in a totally different aspect, to the truth. Family and friends find it difficult to believe, others don't wish to be involved. At times the subject is taboo and it also shows the stigma towards mental health.

This book is written to help others, recognise when a young victim conceals the emotional pain and the conscious mind of the adult, is terrifi ed of acknowledging the abuse.

About the Author

Jennifer Colne resides in the UK in a little town close to the sea. She is divorced and happily lives with her mum, dogs and horses. Her spare time gives her a sense of well-being by supporting people who suffer with mental health problems. She has three grown up children and six wonderful grandchildren, of which one takes after her with a love for horses. Jennifer wrote this book for educational purposes to help others who may have experienced similar circumstances.

Child abuse of any kind can be detrimental to the adult victim. Irrational behaviour is uncontrollable and may need to seek professional advice. She wanted to let the perpetrators know, how their self gratification causes so much emotional pain for their victims.

Jennifer surprised herself of how much she enjoyed writing and is determined to carry on. Her next project is fictional, thus giving her a break from the emotional strain of having to write such sensitive material.

A must read for anyone that has been in this situation...this is from the mother of the victim's side and how it can tear a family apart.

It's pretty over the top in flowery prose. Here is a sample of what I mean: "Divine Providence, having selected Francis as an instrument for the promotion of His glory, endowed him with such prerogatives of soul and body as would enable him to succeed in the greatest enterprises." Or "For the complement of the graces destined to Don Francis, God was pleased to conduct Saint Ignatius, of Loyola from Spain to Paris, who, a few years before, had been converted, and, having abandoned the army of his country, had thrown himself, heart and soul, into the militia of Jesus Christ."It looks like it goes on for 650 pages like this.

By Tutter An amazing American success story that begins when the author was a small lad living in Tomball, Texas; then continues on with his "flight through life" while earning an overwhelming number of significant achievements. From a small town schoolboy to a decorated United States Air Force Major General who served in the Vietnam war as an Air Force pilot. His other important assignments included the Strategic Air Command, where he flew critical cold war missions on the plane known as "Looking Glass." After his military service, the author worked as Associate Director at the Los Alamos National Laboratory and as a senior executive with a firm that required him to spend much time in Russia, China, and other parts of the world. This book provides details of his early life and family, his military and civilian experiences which make for an easy and interesting read.

The rain sluiced off the roof and over the gutter in a solid sheet, battering through the leaves of the rubber trees, and a fine mist blew through the screen, cooling me briefly from the humid heat. Outside, water ran down the slope in front of the house and splashed over the tree roots. I’d arrived in Indonesia a stranger and a foreigner not long ago, but I was quickly growing to love this land, and struggling to find my place in it. There was so much need, both physical and spiritual…I watched the storm and pondered... From that moment my life unfolded into paths I never dreamed were possible, into a life that was, and continues to be, all that I have ever dreamed of.

PDF Ebook Model Woman: Eileen Ford and the Business of Beauty, by Robert Lacey

A revealing, no-holds-barred portrait of the legendary Eileen Ford—the entrepreneur who transformed the business of modeling and helped invent the celebrity supermodel.

Working with her husband, Jerry, Eileen Ford created the twentieth century’s largest and most successful modeling agency, representing some of the fashion world’s most famous names—Suzy Parker, Carmen Dell’Orefice, Lauren Hutton, Rene Russo, Christie Brinkley, Jerry Hall, Christy Turlington, and Naomi Campbell. Her relentless ambition turned the business of modeling into one of the most glamorous and desired professions, helping to convert her stable of beautiful faces into millionaire superstars.

Model Woman chronicles the Ford Modeling Agency’s meteoric rise to the top of the fashion and beauty business, and paints a vibrant portrait of the uncompromising woman at its helm in all her glittering, tyrannical brilliance. Outspoken and controversial, Ford was never afraid to offend in defense of her stringent standards. When she chose, she could deliver hauteur in the grand tradition of fashion’s battle-axes, from Coco Chanel to Diana Vreeland—just ask John Casablancas or Janice Dickinson. But she was also a shrewd businesswoman with a keen eye for talent and a passion for serving her clients.

Drawing on more than four years of intensive interviews with Ford and her intimates, associates, and rivals, as well as exclusive access to agency documents and memorabilia, Robert Lacey weaves an unforgettable tale of a determined entrepreneur and the empire she built—a story of beauty, ambition, business, and popular culture as powerful and complex as the woman at its center.

Model Woman: Eileen Ford and the Business of Beauty, by Robert Lacey

Review “As glamorous and gossipy as one could wish.” (Slate)“Ford’s status as a controversial, demanding figure isn’t ignored in Lacey’s portrait of one of the hardest working women in fashion. The juicy details of a tell-all are met with the nuance of a memoir in this portrait of the woman he recalls as the ‘matriarch of modeling.’” (New York Observer)“A high-powered page-turner.” (Daily Beast)“Unputdownable ... left me not only full of admiration for her achievements but also rather liking her....Lacey weaves riveting narratives into his account of the life of Ford ... with an eye for detail and juicy anecdotes.” (Financial Times)“Exhaustively and painstakingly researched, yielding a biography that serves as a testament both to this woman’s professional prowess as well as her personal life….In the world of fashion related biographies, this surely ranks up there with some of the best.” (New York Journal of Books)“A fascinating look at the woman who, perhaps more than anyone, shaped our ideas of what it means to be a sophisticated American beauty.” (People)“Culled from countless hours of interviews... Lacey diligently maps the agency’s explosive success and skillfully intertwines the glitz and cutthroat melodrama of the modeling world with Ford’s shrewd, intimidating business strategies, uncanny vision, and ability to merge beauty with fame.” (Kirkus)“In the fascinating Model Woman, author Robert Lacey paints Ford as an intriguing paradox….A wholly entertaining, insightful and slightly bitchy look inside the moneyed world of modeling.” (BookPage)“An intensive look at a highly competitive business, with fabulous turf battles and clashing egos among the biggest names in fashion.... A compelling portrait of a savvy businesswoman who transformed the modeling business.” (Booklist)

By Lorraine Davies Knopf "Model Woman" not only exposes previously unknown facts about a provocative and fascinating business, but is extremely entertaining as well. I was a model with the Ford Agency in N.Y. during the 50's and 60's and knew Eileen well. I am amazed at how accurately Robert Lacey captured all sides of her personality. She was a tough cookie when dealing with clients, yet protective and nurturing when it came to her "girls."

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Interesting look at how the agency got started; but leaves you wanting more! By Reading Rocks This book is an Eileen Ford bio combined; how the Ford Modeling Agency started; how the agency dealt with the changing times of modeling agencies. I've read lots of other books by Robert Lacey (primarily about England's Royals) so I knew that I would like his writing style - and I did with this book. The book gets into great detail on her bio + how the agency got started and how it functioned in its first 5-10 years. The detail wanes off when the author gets into the 1960's and beyond. It leaves the reader really wanting more than what is written. The reader learns about how the Ford Agency tried to quash Casablancas from opening in New York and in Paris. The Ford Agency really stomped on anybody trying to open a modeling agency and for the longest time, the Ford Agency was a monopoly. Then ultimately, Casablancas - as did many others - did open an agency in both places. What this book lacked - and what I thought it would include - was more interesting information and details about the models that the agency worked with. Details about how the bookers worked, how they coordinated a model's schedule, a week-at-a-glance or day-at-a-glance of a model's typical schedule....and of course, more stories about the models. There's a few sentences about a booker at Ford whom Eileen considered the best in the business who left to work for Casablancas' agency Elite. But no back story about why she was the best booker that Ford had other than she handled Cindy Crawford. There are some stories in the book about Christy Turlington and Naomi Campbell, Cheryl Tiegs, Christie Brinkley, and some others -- but just to whet your appetite.Towards the end it covers Jerry's death, the sale of the agency, and then Eileen's death really quickly. It was like "Jerry didn't feel good, went to the hospital, then died a couple of weeks later..." The last 1-2 chapters is a skim-through -- kind of like the author just wanted to get it over with.I guess I was expecting more "logistical" information about modeling and with the stable of models that Ford had during its heyday, I thought there'd be more model-stories.The book still is interesting and offers a glimpse into the steel-iness of Eileen Ford which was balanced by her behind-the-scenes husband Jerry.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A success but maybe not a role model... By Michelle B. Braverman Thumbs up to Robert Lacey's breezy writing style, though I spotted one annoying typo( "Conde Nash instead of Conde Nast") and one glaring one (photographer Milton Greene, not Milton Green as written). When I find those it makes me wonder what other facts were unchecked, but this may just be me. Lacey did a great job with Eileen's background and history. His research of the time and places where she grew up was fascinating. I never knew about Great Neck being the "Hollywood of the East"! That she changed her name and dropped references to her half-Jewish background was not surprising for the era, especially as her Jewish father became a Quaker, and her mother was a good Roman Catholic. I agree with another reviewer who missed reading more on the agency's workings and the models themselves. I felt like the author didn't like Eileen very much, though he often defended her abrasive personality with quotes from supporters. In the end I confess I didn't like Eileen much myself.

An adventurous American academic travels to North Cyprus to teach at a new university. He has no idea what it will be like living and working in a country which has no official international recognition except by Turkey. All mail must be addressed to “Mersin-10, Turkey, to reach the north side of the Island. There is no internet or email. It is a lonesome existence and the mostly Turkish students are not prepared to study in English. It is a hard struggle and discouraging when the electrical power breaks down for several months. The Cyprus Problem is perpetually discussed with seemingly no possible solution in sight. The Greek and Turkish Cypriots keep playing their political games while the people seem to not care. In the politically charged atmosphere, it is treacherous and dangerous to even express one’s views of the situation. Nevertheless, there are rewards and frustrations. He comes to look at the absurdity of daily life with a sense of humor in order to survive.

Vremember the first time i was told to write that down as the address of the place, i gave a blank look and shrugged it off! Like huh? ! It was like a welcome to Cyprus-Mersin 10 kinda Cyprus though. Anyway this was quite an interesting read! It was particularly interesting to get an insight on how the island was a decade ago and now and contrast , I must say there are physical changes ( more villas, and more latest models mercedes and more money making machine universities) but same old lazy attitude and lots of BS.Perhaps even more right now. Moment of silence for all who are still stuck in there.

Home At Last, by Jan Sikes

About the Author Award winning author, Jan Sikes, began writing around the age of eight. The stories she writes (so far) are true stories about the journey of two people moving through adversity in order to grow and learn to become better humans. She believes with all her heart, there is something that is worthy of sharing in these stories. Bits and pieces of wisdom, hard-learned lessons and above and beyond all, love…True love that you read about in fiction stories…and yet this is truth. The old saying that truth is stranger than fiction fits the stories that she shares. The Convict and the Rose, her second book, was awarded as book of the year in the Fiction/Biography category by the Texas Association of Authors. She is passionate about her writing projects and is driven to tell a deeply personal story with the hope that it might touch someone’s heart or life in a positive way. She also releases a music CD of original songs along with each book that fits the time period of the story. Why? Because the stories revolve and evolve around a deep-rooted passion for music Jan resides in North Texas, has five grandchildren and in her spare time, loves to volunteer at Texas music festivals.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Jan's passion for detail and raw style make this autobiography series of a West Texas family a must read! By Amazon Customer "Home At Last" is third in the series of the true life and love story of Jan and Rick Sikes. Jan shares her life and love for Rick and her daughters with a style that recreates west Texas living from the 60's thru early 2000. The books tell their story thru Darlina Flowers (Jan) and Luke Stone (Rick) in a series of books that begins with "Flowers & Stone" continues with "The Convict and the Rose" and life after prison with "Home at Last."I can't wait for "Till Death Do Us Part" that is scheduled for release in 2015. It will continue their life journey and appears to be the last in the Luke & Darlina Stone series."Flowers & Stone" captures their time in west Texas where they found each other while Rick and his band performed at Honky Tonk bars. The story captures the "hell raising" and true love they shared from the time they met until Rick's conviction for a bank robbery he did not commit."The Convict and Rose" continues their story while Rick was locked up in prison for his part in planning bank robberies. Rick's love for Jan and for music continues in prison where he convinces the warden at Leavenworth prison to let him build a recording studio for himself and other prisoners who desire to write and record their songs. Jan parallels her life while Rick survives the danger and despair of prison. She shares her attempt to move on with her life when she marries and starts her family with a man she tries to love. She struggles with her identity and cannot overcome her feelings for Rick. Her love for her two daughters as she becomes a single parent serves her well with Rick locked away from her heart."Home at Last" picks up their lives when Rick is released from prison in 1985. Their deep love for each other results in Jan's moving to Coleman TX to marry her true love within weeks of his release. Jan's writing makes it easy for her readers to experience the struggles of starting a new life after prison in a small dusty west Texas town. The family works together to make ends meet and details their successes and simple joy as they climb out of the very frugal life after prison. It is a great story of redemption and the power of love of family.I recommend the entire series for readers who want to experience a true love story that shows how caring for each other, commitment and working together results in lives well lived. Jan's passion for detail and raw style make this autobiography a must read!Chris Schartz - Kansas City

Hearts and home life are laid bare as Darlina and Luke's story is retold. I won this book in a competition and it's not my usual read, but I found the story compelling as it was true life, and I'm a sucker for true love with happy endings. Sacrifice, loss, and triumph. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Love Abides and Triumphs One of the elements that makes ... By Tina Frisco Love Abides and TriumphsOne of the elements that makes Jan Sikes’ novels so compelling is that they’re autobiographical. I was so moved by her second book, The Convict and the Rose, that I knew the third book in the trilogy would prove to be equally poignant.Luke Stone is finally released after spending 15 grueling years behind bars for something he didn’t do. Darlina Flowers meets him at the bus station, filled with anticipation and hope for the life together that was denied them when Luke was imprisoned. With little money and no home of their own, their deep and resolute love determines to imbue their lives -- and the lives of Darlina’s 2 young daughters -- with joy and meaning.Austerity greets them head-on, but Luke and Darlina never fail to ride the waves with conviction. They remain focused on carving out a better future and seldom look back on past obstacles or tragedies. Damaged and awkward family relationships in need of renewal are handled with warmth, hope, determination, and a sprinkling of raw veracity. When problems threaten to sabotage their happiness or undermine their stability, their solid love for one another always helps them prevail. The adversity they’re forced to deal with would crush a less immutable nature. But Luke and Darlina’s firm resolve, tenacity, and enduring love see them through the hard times as well as embellish the joyful times. This review might read like that of a fairy tale, but the characters depicted are real people, and this is their story. It’s both tragic and triumphant. It exhibits the depth the human spirit can reach in order to not only survive, but also thrive. And it exemplifies the long-held truth that believing makes it so. Energy follows thought. And Luke and Darlina show us how to manifest our heart’s desire.
