Alan Trabue chose a bizarre, dangerous way to make a living. In A Life of Lies and Spies, Trabue exposes the often perilous world of polygraphing foreign spies in support of CIA espionage programs. He recounts his incredible, true-life globe-trotting adventures, from his induction in the CIA in 1971 to directing the CIA's world-wide covert ops polygraph program.

A Life of Lies and Spies brings readers into the high-stakes world of covert operations and the quest to uncover deceit, featuring a high-speed car chase, blown clandestine meetings, surreptitious room searches, tear-gassing by riot police, and confrontations with machine gun-armed soldiers. Liberally sprinkled with side anecdotes-such as debriefing an agent though a torturous swarm of mosquitoes in a jungle shack-Trabue's story highlights both the humor and the intrinsic danger of conducting CIA covert activities.

Writing from a unique perspective framed by his uncommon longevity and broad experience, for which he was awarded the Career Intelligence Medal, Trabue's memoir unveils the CIA's use of polygraph and interrogation to validate recruited spies' bona fides and information obtained through their acts of espionage.

A Life of Lies and Spies: Tales of a CIA Covert Ops Polygraph Interrogator, by Alan B. Trabue

Review

“Understandably, Mr. Trabue gives no details of specific encounters. But his summaries of some of these interviews are eye-opening...[a] thoroughly engaging book.” ―The Washington Times

“Like a John LeCarre novel, Al Trabue gives you a unique glimpse into the world of a CIA Covert Ops Polygraph Interrogator. The experiences he has captured and shared are intense. In his book, Al takes you on a journey into the dark world of covert operational polygraph around the world. It is a must read for those who are interested in the complexities of intelligence operations around the world.” ―Dr. Barry McManus, VP Global Operations of Patriot Group, retired CIA Chief Polygraph Interrogator and author of Liar: The Art of Detecting Deception and Eliciting Responses

“Alan's accounts of the CIA's operational use of the polygraph are eye opening; fascinating; and absolutely amazing. During his outstanding career, Alan's superb management and oversight of the operational polygraph program was unsurpassed and as a result of his efforts, the program played a very critical role in keeping our nation safe. He is truly an unsung hero!” ―Phil Houston, New York Times bestselling author of Spy the Lie and former CIA Polygraph Examiner

“Due to decades spent in exemplary service to the CIA, most especially as it relates to all aspects of the Agency's use of the polygraph, there's literally no one with a greater breadth of polygraph experience nor having a more in-depth lens of its vital program than Alan Trabue...period! With his fascinating recountings, Mr. Trabue captures and puts the reader ‘right there' in this gripping, first-hand account of what went on ‘behind-the-scenes,' most particularly within the CIA storied, covert operations polygraph program. I heartily recommend this rare and authentic look back at the unique, clandestine world of espionage through which Alan Trabue navigated for nearly 40 years.” ―Bill Fairweather, CIA (ret.), former head of the CIA's polygraph program

“Alan Trabue has produced a captivating collection of polygraph adventures and misadventures he lived over the course of a long CIA polygraph career. His stories strip away romantic notions about CIA overseas life to reveal the true challenges operational polygraph examiners face, how easily things can go awry, and what can happen when they do. The tales range from thrilling to amazing to funny, and some too strange not to be true. What a fascinating career Al has had, and what a riveting account he has written.” ―Donald Krapohl, former president of the American Polygraph Association

“I have worked with and admired my colleague, Al Trabue, for many years and have ALWAYS enjoyed his gift for story-telling. Supplementing this gift with keen observation skills and a remarkable knack for being at the right place at the right time, A Life of Lies and Spies promises to entertain the reading public at least as much as his transfixed mealtime partners over the years. Though most of us had endured similar trials and tribulations during our years of service, Al's narrative captures the sense of time and place in a way that even our own memories often fail to achieve.” ―Bill Murray, former Chief CIA Polygraph

“Having had the privilege of working with and for Alan during my CIA career, I can attest to his abilities as an examiner and supervisor. No one has a broader perspective on the CIA's polygraph program than Alan. He also has the wit to make a book about those experiences enlightening as well as entertaining.” ―John F. Sullivan, author of Of Spies and Lies, A CIA Lie Detector Remembers Vietnam

“I have known this author for more than 25 years. If anyone has the experience to tell this story, he does! I was fortunate enough to have Alan as one of my teachers when I was selected to be a CIA polygraph examiner. Let's just say, I was a challenge. Alan was patient, yet direct. At that time, I was not aware that he was a polygraph "rock star." I just knew I wanted to continue to learn from him throughout my career as an examiner, and I did. There are many of us who can thank Alan Trabue for his guidance and mentorship in learning how to conduct polygraph examinations, but more importantly, I thank Alan for instilling in generations of examiners the personal and professional pride that comes with "finding the truth." I am so happy he decided to capture some of his experiences in this book! Thank you for your service to this country, Al!” ―Alvinia Jones, Former Chief, Polygraph Section, CIA

“The author exhibits nerves of steel in his dedication to the CIA world wide operational polygraph mission. His experiences make for excitable reading......a page turner!” ―G. Macielinski, Retired Chief, CIA Polygraph Program

“Trabue's presentation of tradecraft, such as avoiding surveillance or utilizing hotels discreetly, feels authentic. Instead of historical narrative, the author focuses more on the psychological implications of his trade's intricate probing of the human condition...An avuncular account of a life spent uncovering deception for the CIA.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“[Trabue] makes this a personal story, with some generalized details as to cases, tradecraft, and how the process of conducting these examinations actually worked, and doesn't dwell on policies or bureaucratic politics... For anyone interested in spy operations and the use of lie detectors.” ―Library Journal

Adventurous, insightful, and captivating memoir By in vino veritas A Life of Lies and Spies is a captivating read that provides unique insight into the world of covert ops polygraph from one of its most respected polygraphers. While many books have focused on how to tell when someone is lying or how to pass a polygraph; this book is a personal, riveting tale that takes the reader on a journey through Mr. Trabue’s unique and extraordinary career. Mr. Trabue has no doubt led an adventurous life, recounted through several heart thumping tales of narrow getaways, high speed car chases, and adventures replete with machine guns and water cannons to name just a few. You also get a taste for Mr. Trabue’s humor, which he puts to full advantage through a number of amusing tales used to illustrate crucial tradecraft practices as well as more self-deprecating stories like the first time he met an ambassador and introduced himself as John Wayne!Aside from his entertaining adventures, it is clear to see the dedication Mr. Trabue has to operational tradecraft and shaping future cadres of polygraphers. As I read the book, I couldn’t help but feel like I was being taken under the wing of Mr. Trabue, like he has done countless times before mentoring fellow polygraphers new to conducting operational polygraphs in-country under harrowing – and often times hair-raising conditions. Mr. Trabue opens his book with a touching tribute to his family and ends with a dedication to the thousands of “shadow warriors” that have chosen a career in intelligence, involving untold sacrifices to protect our country. Mr. Trabue is a true patriot of the highest caliber and his exciting life of lies and spies is an extraordinary one – no lie!

By a serious reader in I've read and reviewed several other books about polygraphing, and interview techniques to determine deception. I rate this book as average, and serious readers will probably feel that there is nothing spectacular in the author's stories (such as exposing Soviet/Russian spies which would rate a four stars rating from me.) I suspect that the high ratings given to this book from four star reviewers may be from former CIA employees or friends of the author, or people who think that spies are stupid and polygraph operators aren't.When it comes to the CIA, there seems to be a tendency for many American case officers to be heavy drinkers, and they seem to be very trusting of their foreign country paid informers/spies. So for career progression there must be a lot of pressure from case officers to get No Deception Indicated results for their agents. One of the best books I've ever read about the efforts of American counter intelligence officers to uncover foreign spies inside US government agencies is True Believer by Scott W. Carmichael about the uncovering of the Cuban spy Ana Montes.

Alan was instrumental in developing the Agency's polygraph program to a higher level and established quality control standards. Alan is a very intelligent individual and I believe that everyone who reads A LIFE OF LIES AND SPIES will agree. Congratulations Alan on a great career. I salute you my friend. Gary Cooper

This text provides a brief yet comprehensive overview of a number of non-Western approaches to educational thought and practice. Its premise is that understanding the ways that other people educate their children--as well as what counts for them as "education"--may help us think more clearly about some of our own assumptions and values, and to become more open to alternative viewpoints about important educational matters. The value of this informative, mind-opening text for preservice and in-service teacher education courses is enhanced by "Questions for Discussion and Reflection" and "Recommended Further Readings" included in each chapter. New in the Third Edition:*Chapter 2, "Conceptualizing Culture:" 'I, We, and The Other,' is new to this edition. It is a response to feedback about the problems inherent in our general discourse about "culture," and in addition provides an example of a culture that is near to us but nevertheless alien-the culture of the Deaf-World.*Chapter 9-which deals with Islam and traditional Muslim education-has been substantially revised.*The subtitle of the Third Edition has been changed to Indigenous Approaches to Educational Thought and Practice, reflecting not so much a change in the emphases found in the book, but rather, a recognition of the growing scholarly interest in indigenous peoples, their languages, cultures, and histories.*Various points throughout the text have been expanded and clarified, and chapters have been updated as needed.

Non-Western Educational Traditions: Indigenous Approaches to Educational Thought and Practice (Sociocultural, Political, and Historical Studies in Education), by Timothy Reagan

Review

The book works to expand, not replace, current understandings of Western education, by examining approaches less familiar to Western education practitioners. For those who are teaching and want to incorporate non-western teaching practices into current curricula, this book has a foundational background on a range of indigenous educational practices....immensely valuable.—TESL-EJ

This volume is written clearly and with authority....serve as a useful supplementary text in applied linguistics or education courses or as a background reader for anyone interested in cross-cultural and international education. —Studies in Second Language Acquisition

Hill My personal belief is that the reviewer who gave this book one star (March 2010)has not spent enough time reading the book, a reading that might have given her a more accurate sense of its overall meaning and the author's skill in exploring it. Focusing on the propensity we in the West have for misrepresenting non-Western cultures and their educating habits, the author explains how colonialism and imperialism have led us astray and how, by understanding histories and cultural needs of others, we might pull ourselves out of the ethnocentrism that so often bedevils our intercultural thinking. My purpose here is simply to urge potential readers to examine the November 2009 review for information and to expect from the book a careful, knowledgeable, and interesting look at the ways several non-Western cultures have educated their young and how we benefit from learning these ways.

Argueta This book is fabulous it is not biased, it brings out good points for western educational values as well as a very different perspective and respect towards non-western indigenous approaches to education, which is truly appreciated because there are few books that have the courage to explore to differenet approaches to education that have been practiced in other cultures for centuries.... this is a stepping stone for the change that must come in our American society that is filled with such diverse cultures and as such requires new approaches to meet the demands of our children's generations and the different cultures that we will find in the generations to come.

A forgotten classic By Michael Milligan Written in the style of Plato's Symposium, Lowes book presents the spectrum of prevailing views- political, economic, cultural, and spiritual from the early 20th century. Each view is articulated with such clarity and eloquence that you find yourself convinced by the speaker, only to have the argument obliterated by the following one. A celebration of philosophy and the world of ideas, the book ultimately leaves you with the sense of humility which has been the requisite for genuine Wisdom since Socrates first made the observation, 'the only thing I know is that I know nothing.'

In this spiritual memoir chronicling the journey of a man who became both an ordained Zen meditation teacher and an ordained priest in the Lutheran Church of Sweden, Gustav Ericsson shares reflections and glimpses into the story of how he learned to stop and sit down, be still and listen. Artfully crafted around a travel journal from a deeply reflective trip to Japan, My Christian Journey with Zen is an expression of the author's spiritual path, focusing on how his meditation practice has grown in both his life and in his service as a parish priest and hospital chaplain.

My Christian Journey with Zen, by Gustav Ericsson

Review The traditions of Christianity and Zen may seem less than compatible, but Lutheran priest and ordained Zen meditation teacher Ericsson sees many parallels. Aptly described by Ericsson as a "patchwork of reflections," this slim volume offers glimpses of his spiritual journey from Sweden to Japan and back. The patchwork approach - diary entries, Bible passages, and Zen poems in every chapter - seems most appropriate in the context of Zen's call to mindfulness; Ericsson shows how each moment exists on its own, while still being connected to all others. -Publishers Weekly

About the Author

Ericsson holds a bachelor of theology degree from Umeå University and a master’s degree in peace studies from the University of Bradford, in England. He studied under Zen Master Gudo Nishijima in Japan and was a doctoral student at Indonesia’s Gadjah Mada University for several years. He lives with his family in Umeå, in northern Sweden.

My life can be described as a collection of many unusual moments. With time these moments turned into stories. More recently these stories became a book. Some stories are funny and others less so. My stories are not extraordinary and yet this is what makes them interesting. These stories remind us of what it feels to be human. To admit that we’re prone to errors. Not every story in my life may have rhyme or reason but it’s the lesson in them what makes them worth to remember. This is what makes them worth to share with others. Life just happens. You either chose to learn from it or ignore it and hope for the best.

A fascinating insider's account of the formation and early success of two of the world's greatest bands, AC/DC and INXS, from the man who helped them on the road to international stardom

Bon turned up with two bottles of bourbon, some dope and some speed. When Angus saw this stash, he said to Malcolm, "If this guy can walk, let alone sing, it's going to be something."Michael Browning first spotted AC/DC in September 1974. They were raw and rough, and much of the crowd, Michael included, was bewildered by the flashy guitarist dressed as a school kid. But Michael knew they had something—a blistering sound, killer songs, and a wildly charismatic stage presence. Within a week he'd signed them to a management contract and duly embarked on a shared journey that within five years would take them to international prominence. A young street kid with an uncanny ear for music, Michael had kicked off his career in the swinging clubs that made Melbourne the most happening place in Australia in the '60s. He'd also been at the forefront of "pub rock" in the early '70s, booking acts like The Loved Ones and Max Merritt and the Meteors, and managing Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs. And then AC/DC swept all before them. Here is the only insider account of those amazing years by the man who helped guide AC/DC to the top. In the '80s Michael did it again, signing an up-and-coming band called INXS to his label Deluxe Records and setting them on the course to superstardom. Here is the story of one of the true believers of the Australian music industry, the man who helped the country's two biggest bands achieve world domination, and lived to tell the tale.

Dog Eat Dog: A Story of Survival, Struggle and Triumph by the Man Who Put AC/DC on the World Stage, by Michael Browning

About the Author Michael Browning was running Melbourne's Hard Rock Cafe when he first encountered a struggling AC/DC in 1974. When he and the band parted ways five years later, they were on the brink of global domination. Prior to that, Michael managed such local stars as Billy Thorpe and Doug Parkinson. After a stint in the USA in the early 1980s, Michael returned to Australia, where he launched Deluxe Records, in the process discovering and developing INXS, whom he signed to the label.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Kayla and Ben By KaKaKaren Kayla's brother moved to live with their father in Connecticut. His best friend, Ben, still hung out with her anyway. She'd had a crush on him since they were kids but never did anything about it. They would never date because he thought of her as if they were siblings. Kayla's best friend, Sabrina, had Kayla help her when she decided that she wanted to date Ben. Sabrina, along with their other friend, Jazz, treated Kayla terribly. Kayla was hiding from Jacob at a party in a closet. Ben found her and took her home. On the way, she confessed that she didn't want to kiss anymore boys because they were always sticking their tongues down her throat making it a traumatic experience for her. Ben let her know that they were all doing it wrong and someday it wouldn't be so bad.Kayla was clueless, immature, and very self-deprecating. It was difficult to read with all of her spazzy thoughts. She let her "friends" treat her bad and never really stood up to them. She tried, but only half-heartedly. They walked all over her. It was just too unrealistic for high schoolers. The maturity levels of the main female characters were of early middle schoolers. I didn't like that at all. There wasn't any realistic depth to the characters, including Ben. I could go on about what I didn't like but I have other things to do right now.The book was in Kayla's POV with poor editing at times.

We all have a story that we feel is vital to pass along to others. Why wouldn’t we? Life is a unique experience. It is not the destination, but the journey that truly matters.

Over the last thirteen years, Kindle bestselling author Lynn Hardy has...

  • Heard the voice of God
  • Received two undeniable physical signs from God
  • Seen angels and demons on thirteen separate occasions
  • Been healed three times from serious and fully documented medical conditions

Angels Believe in You: The Journey that Led to Heaven and Back Again, by Lynn Hardy

About the Author

Led by a series of dreams and encouraged by friends, I began the journey to become an author. I stored my work in a computer file labeled "second job." Writing began as a passion I could not contain and has become much more than I ever expected.

"Prophecy of the Flame: Book One" became #1 on Amazon Kindle in 2010, shortly after "Book Two" released. There was talk of a movie: I finished a rough of the screenplay for Book One in 2012.

But this was only the beginning:

As I prayed and meditated asking God what He wanted me to do next, He told me to write about what He has done in my life. I said, "But God, it's not done yet."

"Did not all my prophets write down what I told them before it came to pass?" He answered.

I shook my head and went to sleep. The next time I prayed God said, "Write the book."

"I am nobody... just a normal woman who You have done some amazing things to and for..."

"Write the book," He insisted.

This went on for a while. Finally I gave in, but not very graciously. I sat at my desk, pounding on the keys thinking, "Fine, you want me to write the book let's get it over with and onto the next thing. I'll write the stupid book, but who will want to read it? No one!"

After three days of writing about my journey with God I began to remember how good He was to me. "At least this time I really know that this is what He wants me to do..." Every night I would pray and ask, "Have I forgotten anything?" Often He'd remind me of what to add.

It took two weeks to write 40,000 words. "Angels Believe in You: The Journey that Led to Heaven and Back Again" was edited and published on Amazon Kindle in March of 2014.

To me, this book is about how good God is. It is the story of how I messed up time and time again and He was still with me doing miracle after miracle. He did some things that are right out of the book of Acts... often after I screwed things up!

By J.D.Tucker My Review of Angels Believe in You by Lynn Hardy. This novel is about a woman's struggle with religion before turning herself over to God. Each chapter is a vignette about the celebration of her faith, or the problems that arise and the ways she conquers her fears and put them in the Lord's hands. I'm not exactly a religious man but the stories and events were emotional enough for me to enjoy this novel as an uplifting tome meant for anyone with a relationship with God -- or not. I give it Five Stars. It's well written, the people are believable, and Lynn Hardy's faith definitely grows on you.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Good Book! By Sally Huss Angels Believe in You says it all and is the bottom line for this heart-warming story. The heroine's struggles with religion are overcome by her eventual belief and trust in God. Everyone has struggles, however it is the effort we make and the subtle help we receive from another realm that helps us through. This is a story of courage and faith and will be an inspiration to others who find themselves also at odds with the One who created us all. Good book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Well written and believable By GenuineJenn I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. This was a great book about the authors journey with God. Even for someone that isn't very religious (this is slowly changing) I found this book very interesting and just something about it spoke to my soul. I found the way Lynn wrote this book there isn't lulls or long spots in the story that have nothing to do with the topic. Her stories take places over years and she does this really well and doesn't lose the reader from one event to the next.I give this book a 4 stars out of 5.
