Beware: This is a self-published book with little to no substance. Essentially a small book of only ~30-35 pages w/o any logical structure (the "book" doesn't even have a table of contents or page numbers!) Interestingly, although the title is "Filmmaker's Quick Guide to Making a Feature", the author's IMDb profile doesn't list a single completed feature film project at the time of this writing. Instead, I highly recommend you pick up a new or used copy of Dov Simens' amazing book From Reel to Deal: Everything You Need to Create a Successful Independent Film or of Jason Tamoric's Filmmaking: Direct Your Movie from Script to Screen Using Proven Hollywood Techniques

Based on true stories, a Texas sharecropper's family moves to Kansas where the boy believes monsters lurk and that is why those bright streetlights must shine all night long. Things are strange. He soon discovers the elder gentlemen who gather on the town's square most mornings to whittle, spit, gossip, tell stories and lies, and solve all the world's problems. These men welcome him into their company, and share their wit, wisdom, friendship, pocketknives and sometimes, even a chaw. He believes they might have answers to his questions. He listens and learns. As preteens, he and his best friend are determined to become rich and famous. They live off the land, fish, hunt, and camp. They meet hobos, drunks, wise men, hermits, and maybe an angel. Their many schemes to become rich are filled with adventures and misadventures, sometimes hazardous, often hilarious, and frequently with unintended consequences. As a teenager, he and his friends cause chaos and disturb the peace with their rowdiness, high jinks, and general orneriness, causing some people to believe that teenagers ought to be outlawed. A free, lively, often politically incorrect, and sometimes downright dangerous era, the 50s were the very best time to be young, adventurous, and daring. The possibilities were endless, boundaries often absent, and the world was waiting.

These seventy-six stories show what life was really like back in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Of course there were drugs and hippies, but there was much more going on as well. Looking inside the lives of some well-known people who grew up among us reveals that most of them were just guys and girls in classrooms like ours. Some lived in the same cities we did back then. They experienced run-ins with the law, marijuana usage and teen pregnancies. And it all happened while rock and roll played on the radio and astronauts landed on the moon. This is real life and these are real people. And most of these things were echoed in our own life or the lives of our friends. So these aren't just their stories -- they are part of our story too. The author, historian Sanford Holst, was a magazine publisher in the 1970s who covered issues of interest to young Boomers.

This is an overview of my experiences sustaining the dreaded brain injury. I also go into some of circumstances which led to my injury. Writing this was an enlightening project that I hope will not forsake me. I have ultimately been working on this for years. More recently, however, I have added more pages. I have tried to paint as accurate of a picture as possible of my injury for this project. It is my hope that I can inspire others not to make the same mistakes I've made. This head injury or concussion was not fun. If I can utilize this debacle to teach others to avoid putting themselves in situations such as this, it would be worth it.

This is a great compilation of the newest Deadpool series By Paul Kim This is a great compilation of the newest Deadpool series, and Posehn & Diggan are killing it.This volume contains so much. It contains a lot of the crass, witty, and dry humor that fans love and adore from Deadpool, but it also contains Deadpool who is sentimental - BUT HOW!? You'll see.Compared to the previous collection, this one contains more interplay between old favorites from Marvel. Deadpool with Luke Cage and Immortal Fist, and the friendship between him and the avengers, Captain American and the now mortal Wolverine. And not just that, it's very endearing to see Preston grow so fond of Deadpool, and care enough for him to do what she does in the book. I hope I'm not giving away too much, but getting you guys pumped up. This was my favorite collection so far, and there's more to be discovered in it.Hope you get to check it out one way or another.

Free PDF Ebook The Domino Diaries: My Decade Boxing with Olympic Champions and Chasing Hemingway's Ghost in the Last Days of Castro's Cuba, by Brin-Jonathan Butler

A powerful and lively work of immersive journalism, Brin-Jonathan Butler's story of his time chasing the American dream through Cuba

Whether he's hustling his way into Mike Tyson's mansion for an interview, betting his life savings on a boxing match, becoming romantically entangled with one of Fidel Castro's granddaughters, or simply manufacturing press credentials to go where he wants-Brin-Jonathan Butler has always been the "act first, ask permission later" kind of journalist. This book is the culmination of Butler's decade spent in the trenches of Havana, trying to understand a culture perplexing to Westerners: one whose elite athletes regularly forgo multimillion-dollar opportunities to stay in Cuba and box for their country, while living in penury. Butler's fascination with this distinctly Cuban idealism sets him off on a remarkable journey, training with, befriending, and interviewing the champion boxers that Cuba seems to produce more than any other country. In the process, though, Butler gets to know the landscape of the exhilaratingly warm Cuban culture-and starts to question where he feels most at home. In the tradition of Michael Lewis and John Jeremiah Sullivan, Butler is a keen and humane storyteller, and the perfect guide for this riotous tour through the streets of Havana.

The Domino Diaries: My Decade Boxing with Olympic Champions and Chasing Hemingway's Ghost in the Last Days of Castro's Cuba, by Brin-Jonathan Butler

Review

“A writer with less integrity might have concluded…that Fidel Castro’s experiment had failed….But [Butler's] time in Cuba provided this talented and ambitious writer with all he needed to introduce readers to the complex and contradictory island he loves.”―The Boston Globe“Far more than a sports memoir, this terrific book explores the world of Cuba's famed boxers, who have chosen to live in dire poverty in their home country even as multi million-dollar paydays await them elsewhere....[Butler] provides a rich (if quirky) portrait of contemporary Havana, a decaying city that remains, even in tatters, one of the most soulful and bewitching places on the planet.” ―Chicago Tribune“Butler deftly bobs and weaves his way through Havana past and present in his gonzo-poetic blend of sports journalism, political philosophizing, and gorgeous first-person travelogue...this is a book that pulls no punches.” ―Passport Magazine

“Gripping.” ―Sports Illustrated

“In this striking memoir, writer and filmmaker Butler examines his bittersweet love affair with Cuba through the lens of boxing...More artist than journalist, Butler approaches his material slantwise, and much of his prose is fluid and searching....He has produced a book worthy of Cuba's beauty and sorrow.” ―Publishers Weekly

“[Butler's] gritty portrayal of the island is an authentic glimpse into the lives of those who live it every day. In many ways, the book acts as a hands-on travel guide to Cuba, infecting readers with an urge to visit. His passion for the island is contagious. With the United States embargo against Cuba likely soon to be lifted, the island is on the verge of what could turn out to be radical change. The Domino Diaries is one last look inside Fidel Castro's Cuba.” ―The Globe and Mail

“People lament that this is no Golden Age of boxing writing. Hogwash, I say....I recommend writer Brin-Jonathan Butler. [He is] principled, intelligent, and can collect big picture thoughts and philosophy and render it accessible.” ―The Sweet Science

“This memoir is particularly timely....You can embrace this book with an eye toward its cultural commentary or you can focus on the sport of boxing. Either way, there's plenty to learn.” ―Beth Fish Reads

“Butler is a sensitive observer, imparting in a most visceral way the smells, sounds, visuals, and, most gloriously, the unblushing sexuality of a Cuba on the precipice of another, larger, perhaps most fatal American invasion: tourism.” ―Booklist

“Colorful writing and insightful analysis....A nuanced portrait of the grays where reality lies between the black and white.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“In The Domino Diaries, Brin-Jonathan Butler writes like a heavyweight champion: Tyson's power, Ali's elegance, and Joe Louis's humanity, all of them are on display here. Writing, like boxing, is a solitary endeavor, one that gets displayed nakedly, for better or worse, to the world. This engrossing work not only looks at the sweeping world, it delves into the darkness of being alone with your aloneness. A total knockout.” ―Charles Bock, New York Times bestselling author of Beautiful Children

“There's nothing in the world like America's grasping, oversexed, blundering, blustery and oft-deadly relationship with Cuba. Charting this fever dream, this illness of love and fear, requires a poet's ear, an outsider's eye, a boxer's clinical cruelty, and an unhealthy attraction to breakage. I give you Brin-Jonathan Butler. Anyone can--and, especially now, will--tell you what to think about Cuba. But no one can show you better how the place makes you feel.” ―S.L. Price, Sports Illustrated Senior Writer and author of Pitching Around Fidel: A Journey into the Heart of Cuban Sports

“You don't have to be a boxing fan to enjoy Butler's book. The discussion of sport takes a back seat to the fascinating cultural insight and comparisons to American culture.” ―Vice on A Cuban Boxer's Journey

“A subtle and powerful examination of Cuba, as seen through the eyes of its most celebrated boxers. Filled with memorable characters caught in the middle of an existential struggle.” ―Steve Fainaru, Pulitzer Prize–winning coauthor of The Duke of Havana: Baseball, Cuba, and the Search for the American Dream on A Cuban Boxer's Journey

As US-Cuban relations improve by the day, the time capsule that has been Havana since 1959 will soon be a thing of the past. Butler brings the reader into this world unknown to most in the US. It's also an intelligent memoir with chapters that begin with quotes from various works of literature. He writes about Hemingway's Cuba, which--as Butler informs the reader--was surprisingly bereft of politics, unlike Hemingway's previous stints abroad. And there's also the boxing part, which is more a personal account of people who have choices to leave it all behind for obscene amounts of money. Some boxers he met outside Cuba have defected, while others he met on the island decided to stay. The end of the book reads like a thriller. I also appreciated his personal story before and during his trips to Cuba. Too often memoirists don't delve into their own stories, but that's not the case in "The Domino Diaries." This book is special because it appeals to men, women, sports fans, and people who can't be bothered with sports.

It is also arguably the first historical novel ever written and one of the earliest novels in any language. But is a classic in Mark Twain's sense of the word, the sort of book everyone wants to have read but nobody actually wants to read?I agree with another reviewer that this isn't beach blanket fare. Readers of early English literature will find it more palatable than Samuel Richardson's "Pamela" and better plotted than anything by Defoe. Although Mme. de Lafayette is not the first important female writer in French - Christine de Pizan comes to mind - this highly original work outdoes Aphra Behn, Fanny Burney, or any other English woman before Jane Austen. If those comparisons bring a sparkle to your eye then prepare for a treat. The central figure is a sixteen-year-old girl fresh from a sheltered childhood in the countryside when her mother decides to deal for a prestigious son-in-law. Except for the fictional protagonist every figure in this late Renaissance setting is historically accurate. The jousts, the love affairs, the betrayals, and the shocking death of one pivotal figure all happened. De Lafayette presents the French royal court at its most glamorous, then peels away the facade to reveal ambitions that corrupt or destroy everyone who remains in their spell.Women's fictions from this era were expected to be love stories. This one succeeds at that well enough to woo modern readers while it levels a scathing attack on the French aristocracy in the tradition of Moliere.

Outstanding historical fiction By Catherine Delors One of the finest literary works ever written in French is a historical novel, The Princess de Clèves, published in 1678. I first read it in high school, because it was part of the curriculum. Truth be told, I found Princess rather dry and uninspiring at the time.Clouet Mary StuartAnd then one night, many years later, I flew to France from California and was suffering from a bad case of jetlag. I rose and went to the bookshelves in my aunt and uncle's home, searching for something to while away the hours that still separated me from daylight. I happened upon La Princess de Clèves, and started reading. And I was amazed! I was a grown woman now and I found the story of the heroine heartbreaking. The plot is very simple: a young noblewoman, Mademoiselle de Chartres, marries the Prince de Clèves, a man she esteems and respects but does not love. This is not a forced marriage as in Mistress of the Revolution, not even an arranged marriage.Madame de Chartres, the heroine's mother, is a caring parent, though she is also ambitious and wants the best possible match for her daughter. The husband, the Prince de Clèves, is a completely decent man, very much in love with his young bride. What is tragic here is that the heroine does not even suspect that something is missing from her marriage. She is, in a way, happy in her naiveté.And suddenly, her universe collapses when she meets, and falls passionately in love with the dashing Duke de Nemours. She is torn between her passion and her high religious and moral standards.I said earlier that Princess is a historical. It has all the makings of one. The setting is the French Court in the 16th century, during the final years of the reign of Henri II. The author lived 120 years later and she thoroughly researched the period. Many historical characters appear in the novel: Queen Catherine de Medici, her fearsome rival, the King's mistress, Diane de Poitiers, and Mary Queen of Scots (pictured here.) Young Mary was then married to the Dauphin, future François II. The intrigues and shifting alliances between the followers of these three powerful women form a complex web that surrounds the heroine.I will simply translate the first sentence: "Magnificence and chivalry have never appeared in France with such brilliance as in the last years of the reign of Henri Second."You read the rest...

"She foresaw terrible rocks ahead for the young woman" By frumiousb The Princess de Cleves is one of those books that smart people cite and which one should eventually read. Why so important? It is generally regarded as being one of the first European modern novels and a classic of its period (published anonymously in 1678). It is also quite an important milestone in the history of women's writing. More recently, its popularity resurged in France as a result of French President Sarkozy making nasty remarks about its relevance in early 2009.What else is good to know before you pick up the book? It's a historical novel, set 100 years before the writer's lifetime. Historians who read this confidently write that Madame de Lafayette (or Marie-Madeleine Pioche de La Vergne) was extremely faithful to the time period of the book. I don't know enough about the court of Henri II to be able to do anything except report those claims. It is also possibly good to know what the book is about. The Princess de Cleves is a kind of a romance-- contrasting the duties of formal marriage with the pressures of romantic love. Its main character is a lovely young woman who is untouched emotionally by any man and who is tragically awoken by the Duc de Nemours only after her marriage to the Prince de Cleves. How is it for the modern reader to read?(Note: this review refers to the Penguin Classics edition which was translated by Nancy Mitford and revised by Leonard Tancock.)Well, I'd recommend that you take the time to find out for yourself. So that's one point. It is easy enough to see the influences that this book has had when you read it and for that alone is worth the time to read. The plot is one that will also have relevance today and should readily draw readers into the story. The value given to romantic love is naturally very different than it is today, so it may even appear bleak or shocking to the modern reader. All that is naturally good.I felt frustrated because I felt I was far enough away from the time that I was missing some of the book's conversation. Much seemed to turn on courtly manners-- point and counterpoint. I'm not educated enough in the etiquette of the time to really appreciate it and so sections of the book went on over my head. I could have done with an edition that explained some of that-- or at least more than this Penguin Classics edition achieved.(One funny thing about this edition was listening to Leonard Tancock in his foreword struggle to explain how he had to revise basically everything about the translation without coming right out and criticizing Mitford.)

Review "An absorbing book, well worth owning by anyone from casual browser to the expert."―The Churchill Project"These photographs preserve flashes of the personality of a great man. At a time when the study of greatness is too often undervalued, Carlson’s book makes an important contribution to the works available on one of the greatest figures of the twentieth century." ―Chartwell Bulletin"A most welcome addition to the canon of Churchill photobiographies, this new volume is one of the handsomest yet seen, and filled with rarely seen images from the entirety of Churchill's career." ―Chartwell Booksellers

About the Author Alison was born in the English Lake District, but raised all over the world. She spent four years of high school in Mexico City, and after completing her University degree in the United States, she moved to the Middle East, where she was able to follow her passion and work as a photographer. She has been married for twenty-six years to another Churchillian, with whom she raised two daughters in San Francisco. During this time she kept connections with England through her antique clock business. Alison has a lifelong interest in Churchill stemming from her parents, who lived through WWII in England, where her father became a Squadron Leader in the Royal Air Force. She has participated on the board of the US Churchill Centre and can be found frequently in the Churchill War Rooms in London.

Neal As a lifelong Churchillian and reader of innumerable books on the Great Man, I was very pleasantly surprised at the new information, quotes and photographs that Alison Carlson managed to collect and put together in The Man Within. It is fun to read and a must have for anyone who is still in total awe of the accomplishments and life of Sir Winston Spencer Churchill. I particularly enjoyed the emphasis on the humorous and witty side of his personality, particularly during the hardships and struggles of guiding Great Britain through the cataclysm of World War II. A tremendously worthwhile book.

Inside are the wartime memoirs of my father, of blessed memory, whose quiet young life and that of his family in prewar Poland were abruptly transported into the abyss of the Holocaust. His narrative records the seismic shifts and tragedies he endured, including the loss of his family and friends. Like many other Jews in Poland, he struggled to survive the murderous onslaught of the Nazis. However, he quickly discovered that he was primarily evading the many Poles who pursued those Jews the Nazis had missed exterminating. In this setting, he was witness to harrowing incidents laced with fear, treachery and murder. The tales of his escapes from death and the story of his survival in the forests of Poland are accompanied by some photographs that my father was able to salvage as well as some other photographs indicative of his experiences. While he did manage to survive, his family, friends and all the other nameless faces in the photographs did not. For me, writing this book seemed to be the most appropriate memorial to my father and all the others.

By Pete Pepper This is the story of a courageous Marine who reveals his darkest days after being blown apart in the war on terrorism. It is a saga of rehabilitation and redemption, hiding nothing as he claws his way back to a full life. Brad Fite's story is breath-taking in it's honestly, awe-inspiring in it's accuracy. This first-person account should be required reading for every citizen so they can clearly understand what we are asking our troops to do in our name. Brad, and thousands of others, have paid a tremendous price to protect us and they continue to be killed and wounded in distant lands in order to keep us safe. We owe them so much more than a pat on the back and muttering "Thank you for your service". We owe them our attention and understanding, we owe them our devotion in helping them come back again, in one piece, just as Brad ultimately has done. Buy this book, read it and weep, and then smile at the strength of his bravery.

"He would have had great, almond shaped, blue eyes, and dark blonde hair. He would have been a tall man, at least six one, and have an extraordinary sense of adventure..." In Killing Andy, Shepherd continues in her trademark self-depricating voice to recount her life after her anorectic sister's death in 1975. She takes the reader with her through a string of failed relationships, a near death experience, and finally an abortion, an act of self-hatred that would never leave her but would ultimately lead her to the truth. It is a brutally brave, and sometimes comic memoir of indelible love.

A Well Written, Uplifting Read By xchefwalt Susan Shepherd's stunning sequel to "Killing Ester" is a must read for those who have read the first book; but it is not a prerequisite- as this book more than stands alone as a solid work of its own.Although Andy is only prevalent in the opening and closing of this work, his spirit permeates the entire body, an open wound that never quite heals. He is ever present, with Susan as she navigates her life with the uncertain abandon that her past brought to her.Unlike "Killing Ester", where Ms. Shepherd weaves her story almost as a bystander, allowing the other people in her life to eclipse her; here she is center stage, alone in the spotlight, allowing her smooth, unforced prose to envelope her as she takes the reader through the turmoils and conflicts of her life. The only failing with this piece is that there is no respite from the constant battle that Ms. Shepherd wages. In the book, she alludes to a period of "sanity", and I would have liked to see more of that; a literary smile, something to let us know that her struggles were not all gloom and doom. But in all, her struggle IS uplifting, her rise above it all; inspiring to those who share similar struggles.Ms. Shepherd has another winner here, a personal tale of triumph that should not be missed.
