*Includes pictures *Includes Vanderbilt's quotes about his own life and work *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents “I don't care half so much about making money as I do about making my point, and coming out ahead.” – Cornelius Vanderbilt A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history’s most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors’ American Legends series, readers can get caught up to speed on the lives of America’s most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known. The Gilded Age and the dawn of the 20th century are often remembered as an era full of monopolies, trusts, and economic giants in heavy industries like oil and steel. Men like Andrew Carnegie built empires like Carnegie Steel, and financiers like J.P. Morgan merged and consolidated them. The era also made names like Astor, Cooke, and Vanderbilt instantly recognizable across the globe. Over time, the unfathomable wealth generated by the businesses made the individuals on top incredibly rich, and that in turn led to immense criticism and an infamous epithet used to rail against them: robber barons. Dozens of men were called “robber barons”, but few of them were as notorious as Cornelius Vanderbilt, who also happened to be one of the nation’s first business titans. Vanderbilt was a railroad and shipping magnate at a time that the industry was almost brand new, but he rode his success to become one of the richest and most powerful men in American history. The industrial might wielded by men like Vanderbilt in the later 19th century directly led to a public backlash and made President Teddy Roosevelt the “trust buster”, and there has since been countless regulations to attempt to avoid the types of monopolies found over 100 years ago. However, many 20th century historians and writers pushed back against the allegations hurled at the “robber barons” and even took issue with the name. Libertarian writer John Stossel argued, “They weren't robbers, because they didn't steal from anyone, and they weren't barons—they were born poor...” Moreover, Vanderbilt set a precedent of sorts with his philanthropy, most notably his gift to Vanderbilt University, which bears his name. American Legends: The Life of Cornelius Vanderbilt looks at the life and career of one of America’s richest men. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about Vanderbilt like never before, in no time at all.

An estranged husband who was a former high-school sweetheart. A suitor spurned after a night of boozing and dancing. A secret early-morning lover. These were three of the five viable suspects police were investigating after 23-year-old Catherine Janet Walsh's parents discovered her half-nude body in her bed that Saturday morning of a sultry Labor Day weekend in 1979. But there was not enough evidence to convict any of them. Thirty-two years later, thanks to the emerging science of DNA forensics, Detective Andrew Gall, who was the initial responding officer to the murder scene, had a prime suspect in this cold case. Sperm left on the stored evidence -- a nightgown, a robe tie to bind the young secretary's hands, and a bandana used to strangle her -- pointed to one of the five men who had motive and/or opportunity to kill her. But this true saga of liquor- and sex-tinged murder that disrupted a small riverside blue-collar town where crime was rare and everybody was related or friends, was only beginning. Now came the trial - no prosecutorial slam dunk, despite the scientific and forensic evidence - as the story of the murder was told in a courtroom drama involving internationally renowned forensics and DNA experts, conflicting character testimony, questionable alibis, and compromised memories of one long night and early morning of dancing, drinking, partying, and death.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. ... twists and turns in the court room punctuated by excellent explanation on the evolution of DNA science By David Singer A strong mystery whodunit with dramatic twists and turns in the court room punctuated by excellent explanation on the evolution of DNA science, which was the crucial element in solving a 34-year cold case. It's a compelling look at how red herrings and plausible suspects can sit on the sidelines during an investigation if authorities don't have crucial pieces of forensic evidence. An outstanding book for journalists, researchers and the general reader who's curious how complicated forensic science props up murder cases whereas other evidence is circumstantial. A key twist is offered late in the book by the defense in the courtroom, which is pounced upon by the prosecution. An excellent examination and explainer of esoteric science that happens to be very entertaining.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Repetitive, boring By Choppies Very repetitive - first giving all accounts of witness statements, then repeating courtroom testimony of the same witnesses - very boring. Although the DNA information was interesting, it was a bit too scientific and detailed. This was one 'true crime' book that was too drawn out. I probably skipped over half the book and did not lose track of the actual story. I enjoy reading true crime books, but this one lost my attention too many times. The background story was interesting, and the fact that the cold case was solved after so many years was good to find out, especially for the victim's family - what was left of it after so many years. Also, the ending pages was convoluted with so many different stories being told because of the DNA evidence.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Really Cold Case By Shoshana Hathaway The events of this True Crime book are related carefully, and the reader is guided through this complicated case. In addition, the author provides the background context that make the people interesting, believable and multi-dimensional.The book is beautifully documented, too, with extensive transcripts from testimony, police interviews and forensic reports. This documentation adds to the interest, and deepens the understanding of what happened over a very long period of time. However, this book is more than the story of a crime. It presents significant information on the science behind the use of DNA evidence in criminal investigation, and also presents some of the issues surrounding this relatively new forensic tool, including political, ethical and moral issues that are being considered, and the potential effects the use of DNA information could have on criminal investigation and prosecution, both positive and negative.Although reading some of this material required concentration, which removes this from escape reading, I found this book both interesting and thought provoking, and I was impressed with its meticulous attention to detail.Kevin Pierce provided his always superb narration. He reads nonfiction in a low key style, but he is never bland, monotone or lacking in expression. He never dramatizes, but doing so would be inappropriate and distracting in this kind of book, and he always finds, and stays in, just the right “key”.I received a copy of this book in exchange for this unbiased review via the courtesy of AudioBookBlast dot com.

Seasons are not something we can control. They start when they will and end when they mature, and so it is with the seasons of life as well. They begin before we even notice them, and end when we grow out of them and move on to something new. I have had many seasons in my life and each has brought with it new challenges, gifts and lessons. From growing up in Georgia, to attending college in Kentucky, to living in Brazil, the seasons in my life have varied widely and so have the things that I have learned and the people I met. In this autobiography I share the seasons of my life and what they have taught me. Each season has it own unique stories. I hope sharing them with you will help keep the stories alive and help you value the stories in the many seasons of your own life

1892. Sherlock Holmes is in retirement, tending his apiary on the Sussex coast. His partner in crime, Doctor John Watson, believed their sleuthing days were over. That is, until he receives an urgent visit from eminent magician, Harry Houdini. Houdini is convinced that a set of fraudulent mediums are praying on the deceased and conning them out of money. He manages to persuade Holmes and Watson to step back in the fray and unmask the criminals. But then, a few years later, Houdini dies in suspicious circumstances. And his distraught widow, knowing his previous involvement with the crime-fighting duo, implores Holmes and Watson to take on the case. As Holmes delves deep into the life and death of the mysterious magician, he is set on a trail that will take him across the globe, from Canada to Hungary. Is the body in Houdini’s coffin really his? Was his death linked to the fake mediums his ousted? ‘Sherlock Holmes and the Houdini Birthright’ is a thrilling new Sherlock adventure, which combines fact and fiction to create an expertly-plotted mystery. 7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Val Andrews is an entertaining writer By Michael Todd I've read a lot of Sherlock Holmes pastiches and I have to say I like Val Andrews the best. You have to be familiar with Doyle's characters because Andrews assumes knowledge of them, but he sticks with the characters that Doyle created and I like that. The stories are not overly complicated either. I also like the detail he gives on the history of magic which is of interest to me. His stories are entertaining and the Houdini birthright was no exception.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A good read for Holmes enthusiasts By Amazon Customer Val Andrews writes a good Sherlock Holmes pastiche, often combining it with other items of interest. In Sherlock Holmes and the Houdini Birthright, an elderly Holmes and Watson have a further meeting with the great escapologist, Harry Houdini in one of his ghost-busting exploits. Later, they are called upon to investigate Houdini's death. As well as showing Holmes' deductive powers, the high falutin lifestyle and odd circumstances of the death of Houdini, the novel manages to cast light on the political situation of Hungary between the two world wars.As a bonus, Andrews throws in two encounters between Holmes and his creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.By combining diverse plot elements with a fine touch in characterisation and a surprise outcome, this book, like most of Val Andrews' Holmes pastiches, is a satisfying read.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. One of Val's better books By Kindle Customer Having read several of Val's pastiches, I believe this is one of his better efforts. Conan Doyle and his wife appear as spiritualists. Houdini is drawn as an interesting character. The solution is far-fetched but entertaining, and does come as a bit of a surprise. Watson's skeptical comments upon observing a meeting of Sherlockians is quite humorous as well. Andrews does get the voices of Sherlock and Watson right most of the time.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. It's Deadpool. Of course it's awesome. By Raito This was a nice, and somewhat sad, end to the Posehn run. Deadpool is dealing with the fallout of having his moral compass inverted during Axis. He's caught in the middle of some who found his new demeanor refreshing, and some who all out hated it. Now that he's back to normal, he's trying to pull loose ends together while navigating how to work in his new found conscience. This volume has hit final, all out with Ultimatum and the Death of Deadpool.Art wise, it's gorgeous, as always. There are a few style changes in the volume, but it mostly sticks to Espin.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Deadpool Vol 8: All Good Things... By vince west After Deadpool became Zenpool and hated it he takes a job to become his old self again. Omega Red is kicking poor farmers off their land for his own good. Deadpool decides a hero would stop him so he does. The Ultimatum still wants revenge for Deadpool killing so many of them and destroying their hellicarrier so they go after his daughter. Big mistake. Next Deadpool gets revenge for that. Then several short stories about Deadpool's friends.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. SPOILER: Deadpool Dies at the End By S. H. Wells Collecting: Deadpool (2012) #41-44, #250"SPOILER: Deadpool Dies at the End" is printed on the blurb at the back of this volume. While it's not really a spoiler--Deadpool's (and really the entire Marvel-verse's) death has been teased for months--it is bittersweet to read the final installment of a great Deadpool series.Previously, Deadpool experienced something of an identity crisis during Deadpool Volume 7: Axis. As a result of the Avengers & X-Men: Axis event and the related inversion crisis Deadpool briefly became zen. Even after regaining his (at best) chaotic good orientation, Deadpool seems to have regrown a conscience. In this volume, Deadpool is hired by Roxxon to clear out Waziristani resistance fighters who are obstructing Roxxon's access to oil. However this new conscience puts Deadpool on the receiving end of Roxxon's mercenary forces, including Omega Red. The two weapon X projects engage in an epic battle. But Deadpool's new-found conscience may not survive after his nemesis, Flag Smasher, makes a move against Deadpool's family. The grand finale is an bloody madcap massacre!Writers Gerry Duggan and Brian Posehn have a knack for Deadpool--the series is funny and fast paced, and this final volume in this Deadpool series continues their excellent work at the helm. They've created a zany bloody post-modern self-referential superhero comic.Issue #250 contains a number of short stories and a pretty amusing "roast" and points readers toward the epic Secret Wars event in order to find out what happens next.

The Kiss of Deception (The Remnant Chronicles), by Mary E. Pearson

From Booklist *Starred Review* She is a princess, and it is her duty to marry into an alliance. But 17-year-old Lia has her own opinion about that obligation, one that she puts into action when she escapes her wedding with her lady-in-waiting, Pauline. Determined, confident Lia thinks that she knows how to cover her tracks, and soon she and Pauline are working as barmaids in Pauline’s hometown. Now two new voices enter to help tell the story. One belongs to the prince whom Lia was supposed to marry. He is curious about his fled fiancée and angry that she thought of a way to get out of the marriage first. The other voice belongs to an assassin who is sent by the Komizar of Venda to make sure that Lia doesn’t change her mind and return to initiate an alliance that will harm their country. Pearson offers readers a wonderfully full-bodied story: harrowing, romantic, and full of myth and memory, fate and hope. She never compromises her characters—especially the multifaceted Lia—for plot; each element motivates the other. There is also a richness to the descriptions that makes readers feel that they can see and even smell the changing landscapes. This has the sweep of an epic tale, told with some twists; it’s a book that almost doesn’t need a sequel, but readers will be thrilled that it continues on. Grades 9-12. --Ilene Cooper

Pearson maintains the mystery of Rafe and Kaden's identities, pulling readers through this masterfully crafted story.” ―Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

“Pearson's first book in her Remnant Chronicles is thrilling. Readers will be hooked from the first page to the last and will find themselves eagerly anticipating the next installment. Pearson pairs a rich and varied plot with a fiery and headstrong heroine.” ―Romantic Times

“Mystery, romance, betrayal, redemption: There's plenty to hook readers in to this installment of Lia's saga and make them impatient for the volumes to come.” ―Chicago Tribune

“Pearson's writing is beautiful, and her ability to twist a plot into knots keeps the reader wanting more.” ―BookPage

“This thick book is fantastical and interesting (with a bit of mystery thrown in!)....There's a lot of mystery that spices up the book. It's not all about the mystery, but it's on the peripheral always, which makes it that much more interesting.” ―USAToday

“Lia herself is a likeable heroine, and the selfishness in her act of leaving a kingdom in shambles for some future love is negated by her obvious naivete about political strategies and romantic relationships . . . Most intriguing are the two love interests, though, partly because of the way Pearson structures their narrating chapters.” ―BCCB

“Rich and exciting . . . a bold ending whets appetites for the next installment.” ―Kirkus Reviews

It's like this crazy hodgepodge of things all smushed together in a neat little ball that totally came at me and knocked me down. It's fantasy, but it's more. It's a romance, but it's more. It's just a lot of good things. Except one thing. The love triangle, but more on that later. Let's return to the gushing. You know whenever a main character just has it? (As if I know what it is. I clearly do not have it.) That's Lia. As I read The Kiss of Deception, I was practically decked out in a cheerleading uniform complete with pompoms. Lia is a great protagonist. She's the type that I hope younger girls look up to. Lia worked for this story, and this story worked for Lia. Now, the downside. Even though this book is without a doubt a five star read for me, there's a love triangle. I never like them. Not ever, not even once. I think they're boring, repetitive, and frankly, they just plain piss me off. The one in The Kiss of Deception is no exception. I felt like it hindered the story more than it contributed to it. The Kiss of Deception transcends the young adult age group. It's a story that can be enjoyed by any one of any age. It's a perfect example of what a high fantasy book should be like. If you've never read a fantasy book but you're curious about the genre, read The Kiss of Deception. It's the perfect introduction to an amazing genre.**I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review with no compensation.

By Jessica@RabidReads Let's talk about first impressions--they are IMPORTANT.If, for example, you start reading a new book, and the first glimpses you get of ALL THREE main characters are less than flattering, you might be tempted to toss said book aside in disgust and hope the next one goes better.YES. You might. And honestly, in this situation, I would not blame you. Not even a little bit.So here's the deal--I'm not one of those the-less-romance-the-better types. I'm the opposite, in fact. In most cases, a book completely devoid of romance is a book I will almost certainly find lacking. That being said, I don't like romance tossed in willy nilly, b/c, this book needs romance, so, "Hey! You two over there! Yeah, you! Make googly eyes at each other. I don't care if it doesn't make sense, just do it! Thaaaat's it, muuuuuchhh better."In fantasy, one of the most common ways for romance to play out is the Arranged Marriage scenario. Neither party is happy about it, but something IMPORTANT is at stake, so two self-sacrificing souls agree to wed for the greater good. Then, despite the obvious unfairness of their situation, stuff happens, they fall in love, and they live HEA.And this makes you happy, b/c SELF-SACRIFICE.But what if Princess is a narcissistic little brat who not only runs away from her arranged marriage, but drags one of her good friends along with her?B/c who cares that the only way to ensure the safety of her family and the general population in the face of a barbarian invasion is to keep with tradition and unite her family with Prince's family, b/c NEITHER family has the strength to survive alone? Not Princess. *frowns*And not only does she not care, she laughs ALL THE TIME. Ah-ha-ha-ha laughs. Like Keira Knightley ruining Elizabeth Bennett in Pride and Prejudice. "Running away equals TREASON to my hard-case father, who had my cousin hanged for desertion and buried him in an unmarked grave along with his mother (hard-case father's SISTER), who threw herself off a cliff in despair."Ah-ha-ha-ha.*flares nostrils*Oh, and Prince only agrees to the marriage b/c his father tells him he can take a mistress. And don't even get me started on Reluctant Assassin. In this book you’ll read the stories of 10 Greeks whose lives certainly seemed set for failure and disappointment if not disaster. An encounter with someone they weren’t even looking for changed everything. How they got to the place, however, where disaster was averted, disappointment was changed to fulfillment and failure became success in the areas of life they now see as important, makes some interesting reading. Read of two teen-age boys, who can’t speak English, lost in a train station in Chicago, or of the young teen-age girl, in such a fog from drugs that she was lost on her own street. Read of another teen-age girl who dares to be different from everyone in her village, of the 12-year-old sent across the world, far from home and family, for a “better life”. Read of the philanderer who loses everything and of the divorcee who kneels to pray for help at a specific spot every night and what happened at that very spot. These true stories are indeed better than fiction. These stories were compiled by Marion Baldwin who, with her husband, Bill, lived and worked in Greece for nearly 50 years

Greeks lead dramatic lives, that's something we all know from this ancient country's history and storytelling tradition. This book is no exception. The emotional life of many Greeks goes lower, and rises higher than many of the rest of us from more temperate climates. These are wonderful stories plumb both ends of the emotional spectrum- from complete, utter despair and ruin to the pinnacle of joy. How these individuals found God- or how God found them- makes for some really inspiring reading.

She had a good job with an insurance company, and her future looked bright...that is, until the accident. Nothing will ever be the same after that, as Johnna and her mother, Helen, become trapped in a disastrous war with lawyers and insurers, trying to get the compensation and treatment that Johnna and her mother so desperately need. Her book is so bizarre it almost reads like fiction, but it's non fiction. Helen and her daughter find the courts and lawyers are out for themselves and they are at the mercy of this corrupt system. A must read book available through Country Wide Book Merchants.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Never give up! Truly Inspiring! By Dana Pietrowicz Incredible story! Incredible strength! It's so sad that you put your trust and confidence in lawyers, medical professionals and insurance carriers to only end up with heartache and a headache (literally)!!!! Keep fighting Helen and Johnna!!! Your strength and perseverance is extraordinary.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Definitely a must read! By amy seifried  1 I enjoyed reading this short story and her sharing of the problems with the attorneys, and the medical system and the greed that they share. 2 Also, I was not surprised by the way the Government Elected Representatives handle the requests for help.

The separation from his mother at an early age appears to have left a permanent scar on young Isaac Newton that seemed to have followed him through the rest of his life. He never married or had any children and had but a few close friends. He would work frantically for days on end, seemingly without food or rest, resting only when the creative spirit left him. However, the work of this ponderous man would have a profound effect on the world as we know it today. Sir Isaac Newton was an English physicist and mathematician, who was a prominent figure in the scientific revolution of the seventeenth century. In his study of optic, he discovered that white light is made up of different colored light. This laid the foundation for the modern field of physical optics. In the field of mechanics, his three laws of motion are the basis of principles of modern physics. This work resulted in the formation of the law of universal gravitation. In the area of mathematics, he was the original discoverer of the infinitesimal calculus. As the legend suggests, Newton was struck on the head by an apple and the theory of gravitation popped into his head – probably not! It was a slow deliberated process of discovery and was eventually published in his major work Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica (Mathematical Principle of Natural Philosophy) in 1687. This work has been deemed one of the most important works of modern science. Newton led a double life, a scholar during his public hours and an alchemist and heretic theologian in his private time away from the scrutiny of his peers. He worked for years in the dark science of alchemy and at his death, had one of the finest known collections of works on the subject. He wrote over a million words on theology and religion, yet few of these words were published during his life – his views were just too controversial for public consumption at that time. Take a brief journey into the life of this most enigmatic man in the book A Short Biography of the Scientist Sir Isaac Newton. 30 Minute Book Series Welcome to the first book in the “30 Minute Book Series”. Each book in the series is fast paced, well written, accurate, and covers the story in as much detail as a short book allows. In less than an hour, you can read or listen to the book – a perfect companion for a lunch hour or a nice distraction for a train ride home from work. About the Author Doug West is a retired engineer, small business owner, and an experienced non-fiction writer with several books to his credit. His writing interests are general, with special expertise in science, biographies, numismatics, and “How to” topics. Doug has a Ph.D. in General Engineering from Oklahoma State University.

About the Author Charles Dickens's early childhood was happy until his father was imprisoned for debt. The 12-year-old Dickens then began working ten-hour days in a boot-blacking factory pasting labels on the jars of thick polish. The shocking conditions of the factory made a profound impression on him. His anger at his situation and at the conditions endured by working-class people became major themes in his fiction.

A blip of prosperity at the turn of the 20th century brought American trout to Patagonia, then for a half-century they were forgotten to fight wars and build a nation. Rediscovered by fishermen a half-century later, the fish had grown to epic proportions. In Chasing Rumor, Cameron Chambers chronicles his modern-day pilgrimage to the rivers of Patagonia in pursuit of these legendary 20-pound trout. What started as a trip focused on catching fish became a love affair with the Patagonian landscape, environment, and, mostly, the people. From a business mogul turned B&B owner to a kid determined to save a local trout population, Chasing Rumor is at times the story of a handful of fishermen, and at other times a tale of enormous trout.

Review “Chasing Rumor is different. It’s a fly-fishing book the same way Moby Dick is a whaling tale.” -- Chicago Sun Times“[Cameron Chambers] fits in a line that includes Thomas McGuane, Robert K. Brown and Norman Maclean (A River Runs Through It.) . . . What sets Chambers apart as a contemplative fly-fishing writer is relative youth. It’s one thing for aging men to contemplate navels and big questions of life. Quite another for a young man to do that.” -- Chicago Sun Times"FLY FISHING OFF THE BEATEN PATHS OF PATAGONIA (AND THERE ARE A LOT OF THEM) IS NOT FOR SISSIES BUT IT CAN BE A HELLUVA ENTERTAINING ADVENTURE. I KNOW - I'VE BEEN THERE. CAMERON CHAMBERS CAPTURES IT ALL - THE WILD RIVERS AND LAKES, SMALL AND GIANT FISH, LOCAL CHARACTERS AND NORTH AMERICAN FISH BUMS. CRACK A BEER AND GO ALONG FOR THE RIDE IN THIS ENTERTAINING BOOK." TOM BROKAW"Cameron's journey enabled him to compress, in a relatively short time, an understanding of himself and why we love fly fishing; something most fly fishermen acquire only during their lifetime. The dream of many is to chase a very special fish. Cameron brought to life the mythical chase and the joys, tribulations and, finally, understanding of that pursuit." -- Lefty Kreh

From the Back Cover A Modern-Day Pilgrimage to the Land of the Mythical Twenty-Pound TroutWhen the North American rivers turn icy and the grass turns brown, fly fishermen retreat to the fishing holes of their imaginations. In the great tradition of fishing literature, Chasing Rumor is the chronicle of one young angler’s attempt to experience the fishing utopia he had created in his mind’s eye. As with all rumors and imaginings, in some ways his journey fell short of expectations. In others, the highlight reel he’d created could not possibly prepare him for the adventures of this captivating and mysterious fisherman’s mecca in a unique, pristine part of the world. Cameron Chambers first experienced Patagonia while working as a fishing guide on Chile’s Futaleaufu River. Cameron's articles have appeared in Fly Fisherman, American Angler, Traveling Angler, and other magazines. When he is not fishing in Patagonia, Cameron is a firefighter in Seattle. He has also served as a smokejumper for the U.S. Forest Service.

By Woodsman From the moment I first held this book in my hand and thumbed through the pages, I knew it would stir something inside of me. I am a trout angler, reader, and writer, and this book hit all these and more. Oh to pull on a twenty pound trout, to see it hiding in a narrow stream, witness the rise, the splash, and feel that fight. Chambers nailed it with this one, and I would trust him as a guide to lure me in to forgotten waters any day.-Daniel J. Rice, author of THIS SIDE OF A WILDERNESS, and THE UNPEOPLED SEASON.

Ive been to Patagonia numerous times and can say without a doubt that Cameron has expertly captured the essence the land, the people, and why a seemingly sane person would travel halfway around the world to catch and release a trout. Would recommend for anyone heading to Patagonia or who simply enjoys a well-crafted travelogue.

Chasing a Rumor of a Fly Fishing Paradise By Bronx Fly Angler The anticipation of a fly fishing trip or any kind of adventure is very often times far better than the actual trip itself. Chambers takes us with him on his quest through Chile and Argentina to find a rumored fly fishing paradise. It is a reflection of his trip to find the "Montana of a River Runs Through It" and the people he meets trip rather than strictly a discussion of local fishing locales or techniques. The discussions about the socioeconomics of the fishery and environmental concens are backed up with participation in the 1% for the Planet initiative, though some readers may find them misplaced.

Sailing A Dream: To An Incredible Life, by Mr. Karl H. Livengood

About the Author Born in Cleveland in 1938, I grew up in the small town of Aurora. As a youth, I loved to canoe in Northern Ontario. Majoring in sociology and psychology, I attended Hiram College and Case-Western Reserve Univ. graduating with a Master's Degree in Social Work. My first job was working with street gangs in San Francisco's Mission District. My first sailboat was a Clipper MK21 which I trailered to Mexcio and crossed the Sea of Cortez. My life changed when I bought a ranch and joined the "Back to the Land" movement in the Trinity Mountains of Northern California. I build my own log house and barn while raising goats, rabbits, chickens, cows, and pigs. In 1980 I returned to Oakland and started a construction business which supported my sailing habits. AURORA, my cruising boat, was purchased in 1981 and in 1988 I sailed it to Mexico. I married JoAnne in 1990, and 1991 we began cruising that eventually took us from the Sea of Cortez to Marmaris, Turkey on the eastern side of the Mediterranean, about 20,000 miles. JoAnne passed away in 2005 after many years as my wife and first mate. I currently life in Rossmoor located in Walnut Creek, California with my new wife Betsy with whom I have shared more adventures spread over five continents.

Mr. Livengood's trip was, I'm sure, the envy of most of us. He describes the sailing adventure as if we were there ourselves, both the good and the bad. He also give us a real historical trip to all the places he stopped, anchored , and visited so that we get a his sense of the excitement and the history that he experienced and the culture of the people. He also gives us a view into all the friendships one makes by being part of the cruising community, and we get a sense of what it is like to be at sea for such a very long time. All in all a great book to sink your teeth into.Jacci Osborn

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Karl's autobiography is genuine, inspiring, and relatable By Tracy Downing This book calls to all who have a big dream but see no way toward its fulfillment. Karl takes readers through a personal and candid account of how a midwestern kid raised on dry land became a man who conquered all doubts by sailing across an ocean. It is a feel good read and by the end you'll be cheering Aurora's crew across the Atlantic and charting your own course toward the destinations of your dreams.

By Yosemite Bruce "Sailing a Dream" is an enjoyable book to read. It's a rich account, with vivid images of far away places and amazing experiences. The author dreamed of someday owning a sailboat and doing extensive travel. He took the steps to prepare himself and to make his dream a reality. His enthusiasm is infectious. We take part in the incredible things he experienced in his travels, and also the amazing feelings of fulfillment that wash over him as he lives this dream and accomplishes major and minor steps along the way. Gregarious, interested, and respectful of the people they encounter, Karl and his wife JoAnne are welcomed and trusted by the people they meet along the way. They develop lasting friendships with other sailors and exchange experiences and information with them that later proves invaluable and lifesaving. They're welcomed into the humble homes of indigenous people on rarely visited islands and become almost a part of the family for a time. They approach people with a love and helpfulness that opens their hearts, so the book is full of amazing experiences of givingness and generosity, not only from them but also reciprocated many-fold by the people they are meeting. For people who sail, the details throughout are helpful. Karl tells about meeting mechanical and weather challenges along the way and of the ingenious solutions he and his crew came up with to make it successfully to the next port. He knows his boat and its systems, carries spare parts, and knows how to make do in a pinch. The main journey starts in San Francisco Bay, then on to the Sea of Cortez in Mexico, down along Central America, through the Panama Canal, through many ports in the Caribbean, to Key West and up the coast of the Eastern US all the way to Nova Scotia, then ending back in North Carolina. Then after months of preparation, he and a crew of 4 friends sail this 33 ft. sailboat to Bermuda then across the Atlantic Ocean all the way to the Azores and on to Portugal. Once again joined by his wife JoAnne, he heads south through the Straits of Gibraltar then hugs the coast of Spain, Italy, Greece, Croatia and Turkey. They're joined on the boat often by visiting friends and family throughout the various legs of their journey. With a keen interest in other cultures, local history and legends, Karl has interesting details to share about all of these amazing places. For example: In Belize, due to a previous friendship with the head archaeologist, they were able to visit an active new archaeological dig at a Mayan site that was off limits to the public. He shares a rich lesson in Mayan civilization straight from this expert. It's a truly enjoyable travel book for sure, but more than that, the author taught me by his example how to live a rich and inspiring life of friendship, love, hard work and zest for life while following a personal dream. It was a treat to be able to experience it all beside him. The book made me feel like a parrot, sitting on the captain's shoulder and taking it all in. Fascinating!
