"The office of the district attorney is a battleground, where the fight between good and evil unfolds each day. We see the ugliest side of life, the pain that people go through for no reason. They didn't do anything. They didn't ask for it. Yet here they are, living their personal nightmares. We cannot take away their pain, or turn back time to undo the damage, but we can be the avengers. We can seek justice on their behalf."

So begins this riveting account by Westchester County District Attorney, Jeanine Pirro, as she takes us inside the violent world of modern crime fighting. Before Pirro was elected DA in 1993, the job was always considered a man's domain, demanding a macho toughness. Pirro can be as tough as any man, and yet she adds an important new dimension to the role. She believes that being tough on crime means much more than just filling the jails. She goes beyond her role to punish criminals, to be a passionate advocate for the victims of crime.

In To Punish and Protect, Pirro brings readers face to face with the gruesome realities of her daily battles, and tells the true, heartbreaking stories of the victims - the slaughter of a young woman and her two children by a jealous, enraged boyfriend; a teenage girl forced to assume wifely duties after her father murdered her stepmother; a nine-year-old boy chained to a radiator in a dark room and nearly starved to death, as the rest of the family went about its business; a gentle, hardworking man shot fatally in a dispute over a parking place, because he was black; an eighty-year-old woman, savagely beaten by her son and left for two days on the cold floor of her apartment; a beautiful woman whose wealth and privilege could not prevent her murder at the hands of a violent husband; and a group of young girls lured into a sexual nightmare by a cunning predator posing as a trustworthy youth counselor.

Pirro presents hard truths about the ways in which parents, communities, and the justice system share complicity in fostering an environment of danger to our children. She describes the dark world of Internet pedophiles and hate mongers, who are allowed to hide behind First Amendment protections to gain access to kids in their own bedrooms. She offers a harsh judgment on parents who fail to address the deadly consequences of teen drinking, and even host keg parties in their homes, while alcohol continues to take young lives and destroy families.

Pirro delivers a bold indictment of the criminal justice system, and asks whether we as a nation are truly committed to justice. Increasingly, she warns, our laws, attitudes, and behaviors seem to be veering away from what we say is our moral core as a nation. We say that we exalt good and punish evil, yet we do the opposite. We turn criminals into celebrities, and view victims with suspicion. If we're going to make our communities safer and our society less violent, we need to do more than just pay lip service to our ideals. To Punish and Protect challenges us to have the will and the courage to wage war on the predators roaming our streets, and to avenge their victims.

To Punish and Protect: A DA's Fight Against a System That Coddles Criminals, by Jeanine Pirro, Catherine Whitney

From Publishers Weekly Westchester County District Attorney Pirro, writing with Whitney, declares her hatred of violent crime and brutal criminals in this book of essays. After nearly 30 years as a prosecutor, Pirro sees herself at the center of a battleground of good vs. evil; she has no doubt of her rectitude. She and her assistants are the avengers who seek justice on behalf of crime victims, often ignored or marginalized by the criminal justice system. The book's chapters focus on the most horrific imaginable crimes, from sexual predation directed against children to spousal murder, from elder abuse to hate crimes. For each type of atrocity, Pirro cites examples drawn from her prosecutorial experience. Throughout, she empathizes with the victims and their families, comforting them and advocating expanded public services to help them heal. She also urges reforms of the criminal justice system, such as eliminating the insanity defense from the guilt phase of criminal trials and modifying the presumption of innocence so that bail can be denied to persons accused of heinous crimes. Pirro also favors the death penalty (although she decided not to seek it in 10 of 11 death-eligible cases she has handled as district attorney). This book serves several purposes: to stoke public consciousness of crime and contempt for criminals, to mobilize support for toughening the penal laws and to position the author as a remorselessly angry crusader. As she states, hers is an elected position, and a book such as this will serve the author well as campaign literature. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review “She’s brilliant, she’s tough, she’s extremely articulate, and she has all the skills needed for higher office.” -- Governor George Pataki as quoted in a New Yorker profile“To Punish and Protect debunks the psychobabble of excuses for criminals, and it serves as a battle cry for the rights of victims. I knew I liked Jeanine Pirro’s style-now I am a fan. Read her book, and you will be, too.” -- Judge Judy Sheindlin“Jeanine Pirro is the avenging angel of American justice. She writes of wives who wake each day knowing their husbands are coming to kill them, of judges and juries too scared or distracted or amoral to demand justice. She makes the hardest, best and most undeniable case for capital punishment: it keeps the killer from doing it again.” -- Chris Matthews, host of MSNBC’s Hardball“D.A. Jeanine Pirro has the right idea. It’s time we get serious about safety in our communities. That means we stop coddling criminals. And start protecting law-abiding citizens. To Punish and Protect is a must read for anyone who takes the American dream to heart.” --Bernard B. Kerik, Former Commissioner of the New York Police Department“Victims are thrust into a foreign environment finding it difficult to acknowledge, understand or express their new reality. Jeanine Pirro gives eloquence to their voice as a strong, articulate and independent woman who navigates the criminal justice system with authority as she seeks justice for victims of crime.” --Marc Klaas, Child Rights Advocate

About the Author Jeanine Ferris Pirro is the District Attorney of Westchester County, New York. Now serving her third, four-year term in office, Pirro began her career in law enforcement as a prosecutor in Westchester more than twenty-five years ago. In 1978, she headed the county's first domestic violence unit, one of only four in the nation. Later, she was elected the first woman jurist to sit on the Westchester County Court bench. Pirro's High Technology Crimes unit has garnered nationwide attention for its undercover stings against pedophiles and child pornographers who use the Internet to prey on children. To date, over 70 arrests have been made, with a conviction rate of 100%. Pirro lives in Westchester with her husband and two children. Catherine Whitney is a New York writer, and has co-written many books on legal, political, and social issues.

A Hero who Reformed the domestic violence system By susie Jeanine Pirro single handedly and personally convicted the two men responsible for murdering my loved one; an innocent young mother stabbed to death. Ms. Pirro put them both away for 25 - life and set out to reform Westchester County's domestic violence system. This book is not about politics; it's about the victims (the dead women) she fought for in order to get justice for their murders. I applaud and thank you Ms. Pirro.

A well written book By Maryann Willis This book like the lady it is about is very factual concerning real people and the circumstances that makes them victims. It is not a novel as her later books are but real statistics and facts. She also includes many ideas about how to keep ourselves safer and children's problems. Her concern is for the victims which normally get ignored and how it affects their lives.

Often comic, sometimes tender, profoundly truthful, the pleasure in these nonfiction pieces by award-winning novelist Joseph Skibell is discovering along with the author that catastrophes, fantasies, and delusions are what give sweetness and shape to our lives. “As a writer,” Skibell has said, “I feel about life the way the people of the Plains felt about the buffalo: I want to use every part of it.” In My Father’s Guitar and Other Imaginary Things, his first nonfiction work, he mines the events of his own life to create a captivating collection of personal essays, a suite of intimate stories that blurs the line between funny and poignant, and between the imaginary and the real. Often improbable, these stories are 100 percent true. Skibell misremembers the guitar his father promised him; together, he and a telemarketer dream of a better world; a major work of Holocaust art turns out to have been painted by his cousin. Woven together, the stories paint a complex portrait of a man and his family: a businessman father and an artistic son and the difficult love between them; complicated uncles, cousins, and sisters; a haunted house; and—of course—an imaginary guitar. Skibell’s novels have been praised as “startlingly original” (the Washington Post), “magical” (the New Yorker), and the work of “a gifted, committed imagination” (the New York Times). With his distinctive style, he has been referred to as “the bastard love child of Mark Twain, I. B. Singer, and Wes Anderson, left on a doorstep in Lubbock, Texas.”

My Father's Guitar and Other Imaginary Things, by Joseph Skibell

Review “[ Joseph Skibell is] a bit of a wise shaman sharing his gently amusing, offbeat life lessons. There’s something unusually endearing and sweet about the 16 “true stories” in My Father's Guitar and Other Imaginary Things.”—NPR.org   “It’s easy to see why a writer blurbing this book describes [Skibell] as a ‘literary Louis CK.’ These shards of life have the feel of the standup performances you might here at New York’s The Moth.”—Toronto Star   “[Joseph Skibell] manages to find humor and self-effacing wit even while contemplating his own mortality and possibly defective memory. Skibell discovers that even when writing so-called ‘true’ stories, all lives are filled with imaginary things.”—Atlanta Journal Constitution    “This book was like candy to me, the best candy, the kind you find yourself tiptoeing into the kitchen for all night long, trying to sneak one more piece before you're ordered to bed . . . The voice is so beguiling, the tone so sweet and hilarious, you quickly realize that you are in the hands of a master . . . Mr. I. B. Singer, meet Mr. Twain. This is a book to be prized in the way readers prize the work of Charles Portis.” —James Magnuson, author of Famous Writers I Have Known   “Humorous and heartfelt  . . . Whether the stories are mere snapshots or more extended, [Skibell] writes with a humor that flies under the radar until a joke pops up with a well-timed zing. The emotional core of the stories, though, revolves largely around Skibell’s choppy relationship with his strict father. Skibell looks back on their differences with the emotional maturity that comes with time and distance, and his recollections, both funny and somber, resound with feeling.”—Booklist   “Colorful and endearing, the book will appeal to readers who appreciate Augusten Burroughs-style, real-life anecdotal ponderings focused on familial ties and how life's eternal cycle of enchantment and disillusionment somehow sustains us. A memoir/essay collection of consistently heartfelt and enlightening morsels of humanity.”—Kirkus Reviews   “When [Skibell] turns quietly to the spaces we occupy in real life . . .  a wink of illusion and philosophy can be expected . . . Skibell writes with the insight of a philosopher, conveying his ideas with the beauty of a craftsman.”—ArtsATL.com    “Stories? These wise and humane offerings aren’t stories; they’re musical notes, from a master composer. And they swirl and swell and come together and echo one another to create a concerto of love and sadness and warmth and humor that will linger in your memory long after reading, as the best music always does.” —Jeremy Dauber, author of The Worlds of Sholem Aleichem   “Joseph Skibell’s immense skills as an imaginative and lyrical novelist serve him well in these touching essays about memory and mysticism. You'll laugh and also feel a little bit achy as you hear the voice of an extraordinary storyteller and a wise and witty friend.” —Heidi Durrow, author of The Girl Who Fell from the Sky   “The brilliant novelist detours from fiction with this collection of 16 essays . . . deeply moving, slyly funny meditations on the limits of memory, the meaning of ghosts, and the value of stories.”—Atlanta Magazine

About the Author Possessing “a gifted, committed imagination” (New York Times), Joseph Skibell is the author of three novels, A Blessing on the Moon, The English Disease, and A Curable Romantic; the forthcoming collection of nonfiction stories My Father’s Guitar and Other Imaginary Things; and another forthcoming nonfiction work, Six Memos from the Last Millennium: A Novelist Reads the Talmud. He has received numerous awards, including the Rosenthal Foundation Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, the Sami Rohr Award in Jewish Literature, Story magazine’s Short Short-Story Prize, and the Turner Prize for First Fiction. A native Texan, he lives mostly in his head.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Compulsively Readable By Pop Bop There are lots of collections of humorous, self-deprecating essays around, many of which are quite entertaining. Certainly, I'll read anything by Nora Ephron, or Calvin Trillin, or Anna Quindlen. Joseph Skibell's stories are in the same general vein, but there's something more at work here that gives the writing a bit more heft.Skibell has a substantial body of fiction already on the shelf. These have been well reviewed and well received books. In this collection, Sidel touches on many of the themes addressed in those books - everything from being a secular Jew to embracing Esperanto to the pitfalls of being a dour intellectual in America - but he does so in his own voice as his own self and without the need to observe all of the conventions required of a novelist. He already is a character, (and his family supplies all of the supporting characters one could want), and he doesn't need a plot. As a consequence he can touch upon matters that interest him, or things he remembers, or issues that draw his attention, or the mundane and amusing complications of family life, without being hemmed in by plot, tension, narrative and the like. What we get, then, is smart, gentle, humane, and sometimes rueful and sometimes edgy observations by a talent who can be funny or dark, antic or restrained, silly or very serious. And because his larger insights are so universal and his view is so generous, we are engaged, entertained, and provoked. For me, some of the bits don't hit the center of the mark and some of the author's concerns don't engage me, but that doesn't really matter because the really good stuff is good and the rest is at least interesting. And I don't really care how much of what he writes is "true" and how much is fictitious. That's really beside the point. It's all in any event interesting and engaging. This is all sounding a bit heavy and pretentious, and that's not my intent. Leave it at this - Skibell writes with wit and energy about the examined life. What he finds is amusing and instructive, forgiving and full of understanding. I'm happy to listen in.Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book. (Anyway, Skibell has a funny bit in this book about how bad he felt when his cousin wrote an over-the-top shilling review on Amazon for another book of Skibell's, and I wouldn't want to make the same mistake.)

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Eh... Not What I Expected By Sara I received a free advanced copy of this book through LibraryThing in exchange for an honest review.I had high expectations for this book, but I found that it often fell short. I was, admittedly, prepared for laugh-out-loud funny. I found that this was not the case. There were a few places that maybe made me smile, but I wouldn't actually categorize the book under humor. There was little that kept me holding on outside of my commitment to finish the book and write a review. I wouldn't say that it was poorly written, or even a bad book, but it just didn't have the interest required for me to really invest myself. I don't think that's a reflection on quality, but more of a reflection on two very different personalities trying to match up. Things that were relevant to the author were not relevant to me and I couldn't really connect. I was just bored. That being said, there were passages that stuck out to me that I went ahead and underlined. I find that any book that I love will have passages in it that really strike me, either for their beauty or for their meaningful insight. I also find that this happens more often in memoirs and personal writing than it does in fiction or other non-fiction. That being said, I expected more profound views in this book than I received. Does a book have to be profound and deep? No, not at all. But that is something that I, myself, look for. This is especially true in, as I said just a second ago, memoir and personal writing. If I am not previously attached to the author, then they need to say something that makes me attached to them. I might read a memoir by my favorite actor and love every second of it because I know them and care about them and want to hear what they say, but when I know absolutely nothing of the author in advance, it is their duty to make me feel attached to them by the end of the book. That just didn't happen for me.I feel that I should point out that this author is Jewish and that comes to light quite often. This is not a complaint, nor a compliment. The reason I want to note it is that I am not all that familiar with Judaism and I often felt lost. I had very little previous information to go off of and often felt confused when there was a lack of explanation or when a Hebrew term was used and not fully explained. It could have been a great learning opportunity for me, but it lacked in that department.Overall, I think I would designate this book as average. It wasn't terrible; it wasn't fabulous. Good enough to finish it, but that's about it. I won't be passing it on to anyone else and I probably won't talk much about it.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Good writing, but not as interesting as I wanted it to be. By KathLDK Literogo Award-winning novelist Joseph Skibell explores memory, the creation of a kind of family mythology, and the strange little coincidences of everyday life in this collection of nonfiction short stories. From the time he found Paul McCartney’s phone number, to the mystery of a painting that may be worth millions, or may be by his cousin Jerry, to the strange uncle whose failed money-making schemes fill a barn, they spin the story of a Jewish American family of weirdos, living mostly in Texas."He could never find a place for himself within human society. His appetites were too large; his touch too fierce, his dreams burned too brightly in the furnace of his brain."The stories range from amusing, to disturbing, as the author tries to answer questions of the validity of memory, and how two people might remember the same incident in different ways. He explores how language changes the perception of memory, or how the apparent coincidences may be significant to one person and completely false to another. Some of the stories make Skibell look foolish; this is endearing, as he comes across as somewhat self-deprecating rather than narcissistic (as his grade school teacher may have thought him)."When you’re a child, because you’ve basically just been dropped into it, you imagine that the world you know is permanent. The adults are like mountains and rivers: part of the landscape. You can’t imagine they were ever different from how you first encountered them, you can’t imagine they were ever young once or trim or unmarried."At first I found the stories to be somewhat unimpressive. They’re ordinary stories about ordinary people, and I wondered what made them so special – why was it worth reading about them? However, as the stories come together, the distinction between reality and false memory becomes confusing, and soon it is gone completely. Skibell makes you accept that you can’t always know the truth, and that sometimes coincidences are more than mere random patterns of occurrence. His cast of weirdoes, from his bossy sisters who run his life (and appear to have selective amnesia when it suits them) to his hilariously nonsensical uncle Tiger, to the con man who refuses to get out of his car, are the juicy core of the book."The place was like a Sandplay therapist’s toybox, filled with Jungian archetypes: artists, swamis, gurus, cowboys, Indians, satyrs. I knew a woman who lived in a chicken coop with her three young children. I knew a guy who played his wooden flute all day by the Rio Grande. Victor, a white-haired poet, sold his poems out of a little box under the eaves of the plaza, while Miles, a silent guy with a blond Prince Valiant haircut, practiced tai chi with a wooden sword every morning in the plaza’s gazebo, his muscular thighs bulging in tight tight shorts, no matter how cold it was. Everything in Taos was slightly askew. There was even a mime called Klein the Mime who talked during his act."Skibell’s humor is on point. However, I found that beyond the jokes, the weird characters, the strange coincidences and the unreliability of the narrator’s memory, there didn’t seem to be a huge amount of substance to the stories. At times I was a little bored."I’m aware of the dangers of naiveté. Still, I’ve begun to think that innocence is too often undersold. Yes, children must grow up, but no one wants his kid to be scorched by the fires of Love and Sex and by their ever-present handmaidens, Rejection and Betrayal."When it comes down to it, this is a respectable attempt from a skillful writer. His background in fiction means he knows how to put a good story together, and the characters were memorable and generally entertaining. The exploration of the reliability of memory is an interesting one. However, some parts of the book fell flat and I found myself skimming sections as the point was a little lost on me.

The first comprehensive biography of acclaimed, celebrated, and much-loved US artist Cindy Sherman, who turned sixty in 2014. Sherman is best known for her photographs of herself dressed and made up as a wide array of fascinating and sometimes bizarre characters, which she has continued for over forty years. Sherman has a reputation as a very private person off-camera. Now, discover the woman behind the myth in this new biography of one of the most pioneering and influential artists of our time. Henry Bond’s biography is a richly detailed and accessible account of visual art’s greatest enigma—from her first encounters with art as a child, to her college days in Buffalo, and step-by-step from that time, beginning with her arrival in New York during the Summer of Sam, in 1977. The subject of the book has offered many new insights to the author, and so too, a number of Sherman's circle has been forthcoming with recollections and clarifications—including her ex-husband Michel Auder and her former partners Robert Longo and Paul Hasegawa-Overacker. Sherman's life story is surprisingly dark: her older brother committed suicide when she was a teen; her former husband Michel was a heroin addict for many years; the art scene she emerged from was replete with sociopathic behavior in Lower Manhattan, New York, in the late 1970s, which at that time resembled a lawless war zone more than a recognizable urban neighborhood. This book is also the tale of a woman’s rise to success and wealth from humble beginnings: from a Long Island North Shore clapboard development to a grand 1840s home in East Hampton set in private gardens, where a flock of wild turkeys roam free. Sherman is also noted for her complex relationships; former partners include Robert Longo, Richard Prince, David Byrne and Steve Martin. Henry Bond originally became known as a visual artist, one of the notorious Young British Artists. He worked for many years as an internationally exhibited photographer-artist and later completed a Ph.D. Bond’s expertise is in photography, psychology, and visual art. In Bond’s first monograph (published in 2010 by the highly respected elite US academic house MIT Press) he analyzed crime scene photographs from the 1950s. Bond is a Senior Lecturer in Photography at Kingston University, London. From the Author: I have recently received the following email message from Helene Winer - Director of Metro Pictures, New York, and Cindy's art dealer since 1980: "Just a note to say I have Vol. 1 of your Life of Cindy and it's a very good read ... am happy to read such an accurate representation."

Indulged since childhood by a doting father and a modern-minded mother, twenty-year-old Miranda Witherspoon is accustomed to neither discipline nor disappointment, yet despite her life of privilege her greatest desire continues to elude her. She is determined to marry a man with a title, but so far no such man has taken a lasting interest in her. When Miranda is invited to the grand country home of Lord Edward Pemberly III for a weekend, she accepts the invitation in spite of the grudge she holds against Edward’s wife, Charlotte, and it is there that she is introduced to Lord Walter Danby. From his newfangled motor car to his confident, witty charm, the tall, dashing lord is unlike any man Miranda has ever met, and though their first encounter is tempestuous, she quickly finds herself utterly captivated by him. In spite of—or perhaps because of—her sharp tongue and fiery temper, Walter is instantly drawn to Miranda. Her obvious need of taming only increases his interest, and upon learning of Miranda’s past ill-treatment of his beloved cousin Charlotte, Walter takes it upon himself to chastise her properly. After a painful, humiliating bare-bottom spanking, Miranda is left with blushing cheeks, a burning backside, and an intense desire for Walter that has nothing to do with his title. Charlotte is furious that Walter and Miranda are spending time together, but Edward warns her not to interfere, assuring her that he will handle the situation. When he catches her snooping in Miranda’s guest room, Charlotte faces a severe punishment, but will a well-spanked bottom be enough to convince her to let go of the past and share in her cousin’s happiness, or will her meddling bring things to a tumultuous head? Publisher’s Note: His Petulant Bride is the second book in the Victorian Brides series and is a direct sequel to His Willful Bride. It is an erotic romance novel that includes spankings, sexual scenes, anal play, and more. If such material offends you, please don’t buy this book.

His Petulant Bride (follow-up of His Willful Bride) By Aquariux Sexy, Fun, Victorian Romance The first book, His Willful Bride, was a great read, and I was anxious to see how the author handled a follow-up. Willful Bride was a tough act to follow. Bringing Miranda, Charlotte's enemy, and Lord Danby, Charlotte's dearest cousin, into the mix and having them become involved was brilliant, and allowed for all kinds of shenanigans. I also thoroughly enjoyed the historical aspect of the motor car. It all worked, and the ending, like the first book, was touching and deeply romantic. Another hot, sexy, eminently readable novel by this author.

Outside of the all the naughtiness I expect from Ms. Carpenter, this novel was a terrific sequel to His Wilful Bride. It was so satisfying to get more of Charlotte and Edward, and Lord Danby and Miranda were quite the couple. The historical bits and pieces were just right, especially the descriptions of the austere butler (shades of Mr. Carson from Downtown Abbey?), and the motor car, and of course the amazing estate in which Charlotte and Edward live. Such a romantic, touching ending. Just loved it.

Maggie Carpenter has written a fun fast moving romantic and very erotic story. I thought it couldn't get any better after reading about Charlotte and Edward but Miranda and Walter are something else. It was enjoyable the way Maggie added some modern elements such as the motor car and finding out that although they had not been formally introduced that Edward and Walter did know each other. I highly recommend this second book in the series.

The Biggest Short Guy is the sort of story that is increasingly rare in today's hyper-connected world. News of anyone doing anything significantly good or bad travels fast and is devoured widely. Add to that the ease with which we can uncover a virtual history of anyone in minutes, and it's easy to see why being unheard of is quite unheard of. Yet an online search of Walter Beran would yield a notable yet paltry biography, largely from his L.A. Times obituary. Walter Beran was a man who arguably shaped the soul of Los Angeles more than any contemporary from the 1970s-1990s. To accomplish this as a city official, philanthropist or entertainer would not be surprising. To accomplish this as an accountant is almost unbelievable. And yet that was the primary channel through which he repaired and enlightened a community fractured along unjust racial, religious, and societal lines. It is not an understatement to say that Los Angeles and a great number of its residents would not be where they are today if a small, poor, orphaned boy from Texas named Walter had not called their city home for the last 35 years of his life. "Walter Beran gave that which is most precious in life, his time. No challenge was too great, no task to small. He did not seek recognition or financial gain. His commitments and contributions to Los Angeles are still felt today." Peter Ueberroth Former Commissioner of Baseball & Past Chairman United States Olympic Committee "Walter Beran was a giant among men. His stature was not measured in feet and inches, but rather in the greatness of his heart, the depth of his wisdom, and the kindness of his character. Integrity, humility, and generosity were the hallmarks of his life. We would all do well to model ourselves after him.." Buddy Owns, Teaching Pastor, Saddleback Church, Lake Forrest, CA "Walter Beran set the standard for ethical business conduct in Los Angeles. His clarion call for businesses to give back to the community reflected his high moral standards. He was a servant-leader, who elevated all who knew him." Dr. Keith Phillips Founder, World Impact, Inc.

From very humble and difficult circumstances in early life to executive status in a multinational accounting behemoth while maintaining his ethics and humanity. The kind of person who profoundly impacts the lives of those he meets as well as untold others never personally met who benefit from his generosity and caring. The world is a much better place for having experienced Walter Beran. How wonderful it would be to see the character traits he displayed in our current corporate and public leaders.

Many Faces, One Voice: Secrets from The Anonymous People, by Bud Mikhitarian, Greg Williams

Review Publishers Weekly 04/20/2015 Mikhitarian provides a thoughtful, empathetic look at the disease of substance addiction and the redemption of recovery in this tome, which follows his 2013 documentary on the same subject, The Anonymous People. Director Greg D. "Williams and the author came up with the idea of compiling a book after having to edit one too many compelling stories out of the 88-minute film. In contrast to the traditional first-name-only policy of 12-step programs, many of those interviewed here give full names, including former Miss U.S.A. Tara Conner, former U.S. Congressman Jim Ramstad, and journalist Laurie Dhue. What they all share is a deep commitment to overcoming alcohol or drug dependency, and a fervent desire to help others do the same. The focus is not on scaring readers straight but on giving them a new sense of optimism while reducing the stigma attached to addiction. The book also traces the history of addiction and recovery, including anti-drug and alcohol legislation and the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous. Both the film and book take their names from phrases common to AA. Since anonymity is a central tenet of AA and other 12-step programs, Mikhitarian discusses the paradox of balancing anonymity with advocacy. This book will offer hope to those recovering from substance abuse, as well as to family members and friends striving to understand the disease and help those suffering. (May)"The documentary The Anonymous People celebrated the profoundness of recovery. The celebration continues in the moving stories collected in Many Faces One Voice." -- David Sheff, author of Beautiful Boy and Clean"Bud Mikhitarian has written an important book. There are lessons described here that are crucial to be followed, if we want to see ourselves as a civilized country." -- Charles Grodin, CBS News Commentator and winner of the William Kuntsler Award for Racial Justice

About the Author Written by Bud Mikhitarian is an award-winning writer, producer, and director in broadcast news, film documentaries and web programs. Teamed with his brother, Craig, their work has earned many honors over the years, including Emmys, Tellys, and an Academy Award nomination. Bud, Craig and director Greg Williams comprised the crew who drove throughout the country to film The Anonymous People, for which Bud served as a writer, producer and sound recordist. He also writes children’s stories, loves sports and lives in Connecticut with his wife, a film and TV costume designer, and their two daughters. Foreword by Greg Williams is the director of the award-winning documentary film, The Anonymous People.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. ForewordMy name is Greg Williams and I am person in long-term recovery from addiction to alcohol and other drugs since age seventeen. My recovery was “established” in 2001. As a result of my personal freedom from addiction, not only have I stayed alive in the face of the most deadly health problem facing young people in America today, but I have thrived. I have been blessed with incredible opportunities to learn, chase dreams, and live a life full of purpose. The Anonymous People became one of my dreams fulfilled and it continues to live on with purpose, thanks to the support and collaboration of many talented and resourceful people. One of those was Bud Mikhitarian. As the man behind the sound recording for every interview we conducted across the country, and as a person not in long-term recovery, Bud is the only person on the planet who could write a book about the making of the film with such depth and perspective.Words cannot adequately express my deep gratitude to Bud, not only for his initiative and hard work putting this book together, but also for his incredible talent as a storyteller. I hope that when people see The Anonymous People and read this book, they will connect with the powerful stories we have captured and share these stories with others. We must keep shining a light on what recovery gives back to our communities. We must keep pushing the agenda of the new recovery advocacy movement forward.Sadly, more than four decades after the groundbreaking United States Senate hearings of 1969 hosted by Senator Harold Hughes, where Academy Award-winning actress Mercedes McCambridge and co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, Bill Wilson—both in long-term recovery—spoke candidly to our national elected representatives about the public stigmatization of alcoholics, discrimination still persists. People with addiction are still blamed and shamed by their so-called moral weaknesses. The Anonymous People—and now this book—aim to be a part of the solution that erodes a bit of this perpetual, insidious stigma. People in recovery from addiction, our families, and allies have a duty to respond to the ignorance, prejudice, and injustice that continue to pervade our culture. Lives depend on it. In spite of a broken system and failed community response, many of us have been given the gift of recovery and that can have profound cultural, political, healthcare, criminal justice, and economic implications.Bill White says, “We will shape the future of recovery with a detached silence or with a passionate voice.”The voices of recovery come from people of many different colors, ages, and backgrounds, but our message is pretty simple. We are a group of people who have battled (individually or collectively) and survived arguably the most devastating health problem of our time and now live dynamic, productive lives just like people who are managing diabetes, heart disease, or cancer.Too few people are aware that through recovery more than twenty-three million of us have gotten well, families have been reunited, and our communities have been the ultimate beneficiary. Congress does not believe we exist in such significant numbers (yet), and the media continues to ignore this giant facet of the addiction story. It is our duty to share our stories with a unified message to a new audience so that future generations can live free from the greatest barriers to recovery—stigma, shame, and discrimination. No matter how addiction has touched your life, I invite you read the inspiring stories in this book and to consider becoming one of the many faces sharing your own story in harmony with a growing chorus of revolutionaries.Greg Williams, Director of The Anonymous People

Historical reminder of the journey our servicemen had during the Vietnam war. A great reminder of the price of the fight to push back the evil deeds of people who threaten freedom and hold no value of human life. This is so well written - it engaged my mind and touched my heart! A must read!

I wanted to know what would happen next. Im hoping in the next section we get more development on the is she or isn't she side of things. I was heading in one direction here and suddenly thought oh! I didn't expect that to happen. Build on that aspect as its rare these days to find a book where the action cant be predicted by page 5!

Review

“Drawing upon a wide range of Kant’s writings on culture and ethics, Murray delivers a fresh, contemporary challenge to the standard view of Kant’s aesthetics in the philosophy of art long overdue, highly recommended.”

Jennifer A. McMahon, The University of Adelaide

“With Kant as his guide, Bradley Murray adeptly negotiates the tricky yet crucially important terrain between aesthetics and morality. He offers us both a compelling reading of Kant and also an imaginative exploration of the issues. His approach is invigorating and refreshing, while also respecting scholarly values. The Possibility of Culture deserves to open up relatively underexplored issues that are nevertheless of enduring importance both in the understanding of Kant as well as in aesthetics and the philosophy of culture.”Nick Zangwill, University of Hull

Therefore, I can't say anything about the quality of its contents.Though it certainly starts with quite a howler: On the verso of the title page it reads "Cover image: The Apotheosis of Homer, 1827, by Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres".However, the cover shows nothing of the sort, but Giorgione's "Drei Philosophen" (The Three Philosophers, tre filosofi), a masterpiece of the Italian renaissance, created around 1506.Academic publishers just don't care about the quality of books anymore. A hefty price tag is all they are interested in, or so it seems.

Working in a hostel for the homeless, Sam, a sixteen-year-old runaway, is forced to return to her family and then goes missing, and Agnes begins to question her relationship with God. Furious with the authorities, she feels she must do what she can to pull the runaway girl back from the brink of self-destruction. She sets out on a mission to find Sam and finds herself with a group of anti-road protesters in their tree-top encampment at the edge of Epping Forest. Amidst the beggars, travellers and anarchists, Sam is revelling in their fireside talk of apocalypse. But she is also contemplating returning to live with the father who deserted her sixteen years earlier and who, suspiciously to Agnes’s mind, has suddenly re-appeared. For the moment however Sam seems secure at the camp, a magic fortress in the sky, though its tents and tree houses can only provide a temporary bulwark against destruction. But even that safety is illusory. Only hours after Agnes’s arrival a body is found. By Slim Excellent book from an inspirational and dynamic young man who will change Africa and the world! Collin's story will inspire and motivate. Against all odds Collins pursued his education, became a Mandela Fellow and is now helping educate young Africans in Kenya via Hifadhi Africa - [...] I downloaded the book and was also fortunate to meet Collins and purchase hard copies for my high school childrens' African Studies class. We were also privileged to have Collins speak at our school. Highly recommend the book to all, especially middle and high school children. Also please consider supporting his non-profit organization by making a contribution to Hifadhi Africa on the Port Orchard Rotary site (I did and my company also matched). [...]
