Only in Time By Dolores Jordan I have not finished the book just yet, but what I have read is truly moving and I believe this happens more than people think. I'm sure more people have died, gone to heaven, but because it just wasn't their time yet, God sends them back.

Her rallying cry was famous: "Pray for the dead and fight like hell for the living." A century ago, Mother Jones was a celebrated organizer and agitator, the very soul of the modern American labor movement. At coal strikes, steel strikes, railroad, textile, and brewery strikes, Mother Jones was always there, stirring the workers to action and enraging the powerful. In this first biography of "the most dangerous woman in America," Elliott J. Gorn proves why, in the words of Eugene V. Debs, Mother Jones "has won her way into the hearts of the nation's toilers, and . . . will be lovingly remembered by their children and their children's children forever."

Mother Jones, by Elliott J. Gorn

From Publishers Weekly "Pray for the dead but fight like hell for the living" was the rallying cry that made Mother Jones (n‚e Mary Harris) one of the most famous union organizers and rabble-rousers. This highly engaging biography (the first since 1974) charts the life and work of one of the U.S.'s most important and captivating political figures. Born into an impoverished Irish family in County Cork in 1837, she immigrated to North America at age 15. After working as a seamstress and teacher, Harris married George Jones, a member of the International Iron Molders Union. At 30 she was widowed when her husband and four young children died in a yellow fever epidemic. Caught up in the mid-century's roiling labor and social upheavals, Jones threw herself into the political fray. Speaking tirelessly and effectively for the rights of workers and unionists--often using bold, flagrantly rhetorical and poetic metaphors--"Mother" Jones reached the height of her fame and influence by 1913 when, in her 70s, she campaigned for the United Mine Workers in West Virginia, where she was arrested for conspiracy to commit murder (she had urged striking minors to protect their families against the military brought in to break the strike). Gorn, professor of history at Purdue University, has successfully separated fact from myth (some of it promoted by Jones in her Autobiography), situating Jones's story within a wider cultural frame. Exploring issues from the complicated role of women in union organizing to the relationship of the Catholic Church to the working class and labor movements, he has produced a new and needed addition to contemporary labor and feminist literature.

Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal Gorn (history, Purdue; A Brief History of American Sports) restores Mother Jones from leftist poster icon to imperfect flesh-and-blood radical. The author successfully fills in the gaps and puts Mother Jones's remarkable life into context. Before becoming a labor organizer and Socialist tribune, Jones witnessed the Irish potato famine, became an educated woman against heavy odds, and lost her children and husband to disease. In her efforts to unionize the working class, she pitted her courage, oratory, and organizing talents against the industrial robber barons and their government allies. Yet she deliberately clouded her past and often shaded the truth to promote her mythic status as "Mother" to the nation's toilers, and at times she was na ve and patronizing. This engaging biography recalls an almost forgotten American radicalism and reminds readers that the Gilded Age fa ade hid an industrial system built on exploited labor and poverty. Recommended for academic and larger public libraries. Duncan Stewart, State Historical Society of Iowa Lib., Iowa City Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Purdue University historian Gorn has taken on unconventional subjects before--for instance, in his Brief History of American Sports (1993). Here, he supplies a thorough study of the life of an unconventional American woman, Mary Harris "Mother" Jones (1837-1930). She was an immigrant from Ireland via Canada, and her adulthood is obscure; Gorn documents as much as he can. Only in the 1890s did Jones gain visibility as a union organizer and in the fight against child labor. For a quarter century, Mother Jones went wherever people were struggling: with Coxey's army; in the mine country of West Virginia or Colorado; organizing May Day demonstrations; and writing for labor publications and, ultimately, broader-circulation journals. Her age and the maternal role she adopted made Jones an effective organizer and symbol at a time when the common definition of womanliness restricted many women's activities. Gorn is not silent about Jones' flaws--including her tendency to mythologize her past and to impose her own views, on the theory that "Mother knows best"--but his entertaining study ultimately celebrates her "amazing life of courage and commitment." 38 of 40 people found the following review helpful. Mother Jones: Everybody's mother By Emily Landau Author of Spectacular Wickedness (2013). Elliott Gorn has written an excellent biography of Mary Harris Jones, better known as Mother Jones. Gorn has applied critical analysis to his meticulous and quite impressive research--this was not an easy woman to pin down, and Gorn has managed with limited materials to convey the essence of her life. In doing so, he tells three simultaneous stories, all significant for a broad view of American history. First is the story of Mary Jones herself. Her life was both tragic and triumphant, and Gorn treats it with sensitivity and a light touch, conjecturing at times to what she must have felt, but never presuming to be inside her head or heart. The second story is the story of the American labor movement, particularly that of the United Mine Workers, and their struggle against BIG CAPITAL. Gorn does not overemphasize the uneven nature of this struggle, nor does he dwell on the massive injustices against the mine workers by mine owners, coal interests, and even the Federal Government. He gives it to us straight. The facts speak for themselves. But Gorn presents the facts in the context of Jones's life and her struggle, and never preaches. He lets the history--a history too seldom told--be revealed through the contours of Jones's life. Which leads to the third story: the story of American self-invention. Mary Jones invented herself, and went to great lengths to sustain an identity that would allow her, as a woman and a mother, to become one of the toughest and most feared labor organizers in American history--not a normal or accepted role for women, generally during her lifetime. Throughout these three stories, Gorn engages the notion of gender in late Victorian and early twentieth century US history. This, too, he does with a subtle hand and a light touch, totally without jargon. The book is thoroughly enjoyable, accessible to all readers, and interesting in its own right. Plus it sheds light on important processes in American history. I highly recommend it.

14 of 14 people found the following review helpful. well done! By tigger grrl Elliott J. Gorn has written a well-researched biography of one of Labor's greatest spokesperson. Gorn writes a complete book on Mother Jones, Mary Jones, and even Mary Harris -- the person AND the persona. His objectivity allows him to correct Mother Jones' revisionist history of her own life and her achievements, even as he praises her deep committment and her probable rationale for exaggerating her achievements. One slight criticism is that Gorn on occasion follows one aspect of the Labor movement (or Mother's) struggle, then goes back in time to pick up another thread. In his great favor, though, Gorn details the incorrect details and unfair attacks of other authors, both of her day and later. If you read only one book on Mother Jones, this should be it.

Saint Jones By calmly A lot of good detail is presented in this biography, a lot of moral force worth bringing to our attention. Many of us are curently such spoiled and cowardly workers that we need historians like Ellliott J. Gorn to give us a dose of a truth that most of our employers, politicians and media don't want us to be exposed to. Is "American Idol" on? I suppose we do need someone else to shake up.From the historical record, it may not have been possible to uncover more of what made Mary Jones into Mother Jones: what it seems, as a historian and not a psychologist, Gorn has wisely done is to show how the conditions of Mary Jone's times presented her with challenges which she responded to bravely. You or I may have dodged the same challenges but not Mother Jones. It is well worth Mary Jones and Gorn showing us what is possible.Mother Jones eschewed religion, socialist parties, and the IWW. If without an answer, she demanded answers of those who we might have thought could help us. She knew what common folk were capable of but she also insisted on leaders being leaders and not servants of the rich.Hard times are upon us. Globalization and war machinery of unprecended strength and concentrations of wealth threaten all working people, whether in the United States, Mexico, India, China, Uganda, Peru, or Antarctica. Mother Jones did not cater to national or religious boundaries. I hope I can rouse myself from my reading of this book as I suggest you do. We have hope if we don't delay.

Many of us have explored the Jesuit cemeteries of Grand Coteau and Spring Hill and have wondered: Who were these men? What were they like? What work did they do? The answers to these and many other questions can be found in Southern Jesuit Biographies. It s an extensive work, containing brief life stories of more than 200 Jesuit priests and brothers. And it is well-illustrated with photographs, many of them rare and seldom seen. For three centuries, Southern Jesuits have been busy helping to build the Kingdom of God on earth preaching the Gospel in word and deed, administering the sacraments, learning and teaching, building churches and schools, leading retreats, promoting peace and justice. Their work has taken them from New Orleans to Dallas, from Miami to El Paso, from Brazil to Sri Lanka. And now, effective July 31, 2014, the New Orleans Province has joined with the Missouri Province to form the new U.S. Central and Southern Province and to begin a new era of service to God s people. But lest the lives and contributions of these noble men of the South be allowed to fade into obscurity, this book captures their intriguing stories. This commemorative edition was compiled and written by the renowned scholar and prolific author Rev. Jerry Neyrey, S.J., with contributions from Tom Clancy, S.J., and others.

About the Author Tami Sanders has spent her life in ministry, speaking, singing, sharing of God's love and power. Growing up in a Christian home with loving Christian parents provided a safe, secure environment for this charismatic woman to spread her wings and explore the area of ministry that brought her the most joy, music. Having spent years behind the microphone singing, Tami now finds God is using her more to speak His words than to sing them. Battling Guillain-Barre Syndrome was a life-changing event that God used to change her heart while ministering to her body. Continuing to share with others about the awesome power of God, Tami now approaches each day with a new outlook - she asks God to help her see others through His eyes.

A healer from Santa Cruz, California relocates to a small Northern Minnesota town where she sets up her table, bringing with her an intuitive awareness and healing energy far unlike the community has seen before. Armed with her unique gifts and some prophetic words from an old friend, Seera Wolf must face the challenges of building her business in a conservative-minded town, wading her way through negativity and non-believers. During the course of her journey, Seera's eyes were opened to a new movement of healing. After decades of developing herself and studying the works of authors like Louise Hay, James Redfield, Gregg Braden and Dr. John Sarno, she parlayed her gifts and developed a unique form of wellness; that which includes the mind and body. These memoirs take you through her long journey from a displaced solo parent to a distinguished Intuitive Healer through self-determination and the help of her Ancestral Spirit Guides, showing you what it is like to be on her side of the table.

By Airra I saw an ad for this book while I was at a coffee shop in Moose Lake, Minnesota last summer and I've been anxious to order and read it ever since. I finally got the opportunity to do so and it had its ups and downs. I didn't expect it to be a marvelous piece of literature considering her career isn't writing, but healing. However, she could've at least found a decent editor. Plus, I was hoping for more information with some of the stories. Many of them left the reader with too much ambiguity. I felt the author made repetitive statements but didn't go into much detail to back them up. Some of the paragraphs were unclear and although I thought the beginning was poorly written, it did improve mid-book. All criticism aside, I will say I did appreciate her narratives about the experiences with all of her clients. She seems like a very smart and generous woman and I wish there were more massage therapists out there with her intuitive nature and comprehension of holistic health. Thank you Seera Wolf for the read!

By Ernestina My Side of the Table is a great launch to what promises to be a very insightful and inspiring book series from this caring and powerful Shaman. Seera Wolf's ability to connect with her clients is evident with each excerpt and prompts the reader to consider his or her own mind/body/spirit connection. This is a great book for anyone curious to understand more about how Shaman receive guiding messages from the universe and interpret them to assist with body/mind/spirit healing.

It just portrays the perfect “bubble gum” pink and the mint ice cream…YUMMY!!! I spotted the cover on this book before I had even read the blurb for it!Now, on to the good stuff! The author did a fantastic job of recapping the first book so I didn’t have to re-read or skim over it to remember what happened or where we were at. If you are like me, you read so many books that some of them are hard to recall all of the major events. After reading the first book, I had no idea of whom was setting up the girls. And reading this book left me the exact same way! I had no idea of whom the “bad guy” was until the very end. The author left just enough hints to have you thinking it could be one person and leading the reader in one direction but then, there will be another hint and you end up second guessing what your original thought was?I enjoyed getting to know all of the girls and reading about their relationships or lack thereof. I think my favorite may have been mackenzie, or maybe it was Ava?? I am not sure…I just know that I enjoyed all of their points of view equally!!The ending was a complete shocker! I had never even had a hint of what was to come! This will be a memorable book for me and one that I recommend to all mystery fans out there!!!

I've been reading her books since 2006/2007 when PLL first came out. Now that that serious is over I decided to try the Perfectionists. Absolutely LOVED the first one and couldn't wait to read The Good Girls! I received the book on Friday and read it in about 8 hours. Wow it was great. Kept my mind going a million miles a minute! The twist was kinda sad... and left me thinking a LOT even after I was done. I wish there could have been at least 4 books or so in this small series but I still loved both books. Can't wait to see what she comes up with next.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A fantastic YA mystery read - Sara Shepard at her very best By Z. de Ruiter Say what you will about Sara Shepard's formulaic writing, which she also adapted for other novels such as Pretty Little Liars, The Lying Game series and the more adult-focused The Heiress, she knows how to write a gripping story that will not let its readers go until the final page, and with The Perfectionists she has done it again. When I read the first book in her latest series I thought that while it followed a similar set-up to her other novels, a group of teenage girls are thrown together in a murder mystery set-up, I actually felt that the characters were more interesting and diverse than anything I'd previously read by her hand. In other words, I was hooked. Again. So when I saw the beautiful second novel in the series, The Good Girls, at Hot Key Book's blogger event in April, it was practically screaming my name (it really was) and at the end of the day I was in proud possession of my very own copy to stroke and read.In trademark Sara Shepard style the story threw a lot of red herrings making the reader suspect someone to be the murderer, when of course that isn't the case at all - or plot would be finished far too quickly. In contrary to the previous novel however, this one started to drive towards crazy town with a major twist towards the end; Shepard has such an innovative imagination and that makes for a very exciting reading experience.Opposed to her previous series I did find that it took me a little while to remember what had happened before, and what the stories of each of the five girls central within the novel was, but that is a good thing. It means that she didn't just rehash it for the majority of The Good Girls, but instead the reader gets to dive straight back into the action. And I found The Perfectionists series to be more daring and bizarre than the other YA mystery novels by Shepard's hands. The last few chapters from The Good Girls were particularly crazy but they were also insanely gripping.I knocked off one star because for once I saw the BIG twist coming quite a while before its revelation (which puts not only this novel but also the previous one in an entirely new perspective), which hampered my enjoyment of the intriguing aspects of the book somewhat. Nonetheless this was still an excellent YA mystery read and Sara Shepard has shown once more that she is the absolute best that this sub genre has to offer.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Same oh, Same oh By R. Evans It's the same formula over and over here lately for Dixie. Girl is afraid of the guys, they win her over and end up in bed together. She gets severely hurt in the end and though she's not healed, they all have to make love to her at the end of the story. Also includes spanking. Same story but different people and dialog.I wish she would change it up and make it more interesting or longer buildup to the story. It's like wham, bam and the story is over with. Story goes along and then there is the bad guy hurting on the girl and the story ends.Sorry for being on a soap box. Just irritated. It all sounds promising but it's like an afterthought about putting the bad guy in there, doing damage and it's over with. No buildup; just a let down.

The only thing I was a little disappointed in was the action toward the end. It seemed a bit rushed and anticlimactic. Overall it was a great story and I enjoyed reading it.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Another amazing story by Ms. Dwyer By Romance Reader addict This author never disappoints. She is on my auto buy for whatever she comes out with. Just wish she could write faster. Love all her book series. A must read for the erotic romance fan looking for strong well developed characters and an even stronger plot. Wish more "REAL" reviews were posted. But don't just take my word for it. Give her books a try. You will not be disappointed.

Born in 1933, Kenneth Vernon Crane grew up on a farm in New Jersey sharing one bathroom with eight siblings. He learned early in life to be self-reliant, and he took to heart his pop’s platitudes that featured plainspoken advice such as “Plan your work, then work your plan,” and “There are no problems in life, only challenges.”

When working out his plan to serve in the military in order to gain a college education under the GI Bill and make a life with his high school sweetheart, he could only imagine where his cocky attitude and enthusiasm for embracing challenges would take him. He went on to become a public accountant and a tax expert licensed by the IRS, building a clientele of distinguished lawyers, doctors, and CEOs, along with dairy farmers and regular folks. Against all odds this man-wife team ended up multimillionaires.

In Memoirs, Crane looks back at his extraordinary life with candor and characteristic humor, providing an amalgamation of personal philosophies and practical advice culled from a long life well lived. His fascinating story shows how enthusiasm, ingenuity, and the willingness to turn each “Ken-undrum” into a challenge can bring happiness along with success in life.

She has to switch from saris to skirts, give up her beautiful long hair, but she never gives up what is important to her-ghargrahasthi-being a mother, wife and house holder and, of course, her love for pediatrics. It can all be done with determination, patience, and perseverance, she says. When all else fails, she banks on karma.

In her memoir, Boundaries of the Wind, you read about Khanna's elaborate wedding arranged by her parents, the life of a housewife in Chandigarh, India, monkeydance performances, and a lot more.

Boundaries of the Wind is a beautiful and insightful account of a young woman's journey By Amazon Customer Boundaries of the Wind is a beautiful and insightful account of a young woman's journey. I enjoyed the author's tender writing style and the compassionate and wise way she handles her many challenging situations. The book is full of family and life, not to mention a beautiful picture of India's tastes, colors and descriptions. A terrific memoir.

By Anna I found this book to be an eloquently written tale of the trials a young Indian girl faced when coming to America. I enjoyed reading this book and i hope the author writes another about her childhood.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An inspiring and enjoyable life story By C. Sprankle In this book, Urmilla Khanna recounts her life from when she got her medical degree in India in 1961 to when she completed her U.S. residency in pediatrics in 1974. During that time, she got married, lived in two very different cities in India and two American college towns, had two children (one in America and one in India), spent time as a stay-at-home mom in both countries, held several jobs, and earned a master's degree in clinical pharmacology. Khanna begins her book by asking the reader rhetorically whether the world really needs another immigrant's memoir. She then proceeds to tell a rich tale that is a worthy addition to the canon. In direct language and relying heavily on recounts of conversations she had with friends and family during that time, she helps the reader learn more both about Indian history and culture and about the challenges faced by women in both cultures during that time period. Khanna can consider herself a role model for both Indian and American women, and she's written an enjoyable and inspiring book.

At first Tucker was lauded by crime fighters as a hero for helping bring down his captor, James "Juan" T. Moran, America's 8th most wanted man, and believed himself eligible for $100,000 reward. Then, overnight, he was recast as a co-defendant for rendering assistance in a double homicide. He served five years and paid a fine of $70,000. Now he is clean, sober, and eager to show the world that addicts can and do recover. This is his story.

By Megan Snowden Let me start by saying that once I picked up this book, the only time I put it down was to go to sleep. The story that Mark tells is beyond suspenseful, terrifying, and brutally honest. It truly gives an accurate description into an addicts life and the grip that drugs have on a person. My heart pounded as I turned the pages, I often felt like I was in the car with them living this nightmare. Ride or die is a book that I will most definitely be recommending to my friends and family. If you are struggling to understand the mind of an addict, I truly think this book can help navigate what life is truly like for them and the daily demons they fight. This book is raw, be prepared for some graphic realities of an addicts life and the tragedy that consumes them. Amazing story of relentless hope and survival.

By Justin Goody One of the hardest things to do when trying to get a message across to an addict is to speak in a language they understand. This book seems to transcend conventional storytelling and speak straight to the addict. From the early pages the reader is put, quite literally, in the drivers seat. I have never read a book where I was so clearly convinced that I was a part of the story, and was so anxious to see what would happen next. The characters were so real I felt like all of my senses were stimulated every time I sat down to read a few more days of the story. I could practically hear the sounds of the street and smell the desperation. It will speak to you through the eyes of an addict, in a way that anyone can understand, but no one will be expecting. All throughout the story I found encouraging words of wisdom and hope that never come off as pushy, but rather show that there is another way, and an easier way to live. This story definitely took me down an exciting and enlightening path I wasn't expecting. I will absolutely recommend it to anyone who struggles with addiction, whether the addiction belongs to them or just someone they care about.

He has you feeling the painful symptoms of withdrawal from heroin By mark l wilder Mark’s book takes you on his chilling Road trip through hell with a killer by his side. Mark’s writing style is explicitly descriptive leading you with his words in such a way that you are feeling every emotion he is going through. He has you feeling the painful symptoms of withdrawal from heroin, feeling the throbbing pain in his infected leg, crying from the frustration of how to get out of his seemingly insurmountable and trapped situation. Mark will also have you smiling in spite of yourself with his sense of humor that comes out when you least expect it.As Mark’s mother, I can tell you that Mark has turned his life around and is now welcomed back into the loving arms of his family. His life is now an inspiration through the sharing of his story so that others can overcome the steel grips of addiction. “As long as there is breath there is hope!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Another great hot sexy bear shifter By J. L. Johnston Mason is the next generation of the Grizzly MC. He's lived each day as if it's his last. His only thought has been of himself until he's almost killed in a bad setup. His life was almost destroyed and this gave him the wake up call he needed. As he's making his long road to recovery his main focus is making the ones who hurt him pay but Ryeissa may put a kink in that plan. His bear wants the sexy curvy nurse whose been supporting Mason on his road to recovery. Once he's healed will Madon give into his bear and make Ryeissa his mate or will he push her away for protection. Ryeissa is a innocent woman who has never been exposed to the gritty life that Mason has as a patched member of the Grizzly MC. Jenika Snow writes sexy hot strong alphas who fall for the quirky innocent curvy girl. If only this happened in the real world. Jenika does a great job of making it seem possible for the curvy quirky lonely girl to find her over the top hot alpha mate. Plenty of hot panty melting scenes and just enough action to keep you on the edge of your seat. I love all the Grizzly MC books and this one is another great read

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. My favorite Grizzly shifter book out of the whole series By Linda W This has to be my favorite Grizzly's book! I really loved Mason's story and how he fought so hard to win the woman he loved.Mason knew he wasn't boyfriend material, but he knew Ryeissa was the kind of girl that needed certain things. Soft things that he couldn't give her. While Mason is recovering from a near death attempt on his life he lusts after his nurse in the hospital. Ryeissa had no problem taking care of the massive bear shifter. In fact, the pleasure is all hers. They danced around their attraction until Mason was discharged, then they went their separate ways. Ryeissa thought that was the end of everything because she was too nervous to tell Mason how she felt. But that was only the beginning because Mason's bear wanted her and it would be denied.I LOVED this book! The whole series is a great mix of bikers and shifters. Brilliantly written by Jenika Snow & Sam Crescent.A work of art!

He was so full of both sorrow and anger after he was run down and nearly killed. His world began to be a swirl or regret, rage and fear of the unknown. Would ha ever walk again? Will he be the man he was once again?Ryeissa...Such a refreshing ray of sunshine to Mason's bleak world. The strong nurse who wouldn't bow down to his anger and attitude. Could she heal the man and beast and make Mason whole again? Can she be his key to happiness and help him be the bigger man?Can a mans love for his woman be stronger than the need for vengeance? This is my confession: Mason & Ryeissa may be my absolute favorite Grizzly couple, if not my favorite all around Jenika Snow couple, period.

It gives the reader an insider's viewpoint of a policeman's day-to-day activities. When the average person is confronted with danger he or she runs away while policemen run toward it. They put their lives in jeopardy every day when they come to work. We owe them a debt of gratitude. I also appreciate the author recognizing the need to thank God for sparing his life on so many occasions. Thank you, Mr. Albright, for this well-written book. I look forward to more books from you.MKOhio
