Building a foundation. Gathering wood. Overcoming limits.

It’s all about building a dream, and Fran Kelso tells how in Alaskan Attitudes, her personal memoir about living alone on the Alaskan homestead.

Kelso had always wanted to build a home and live on Spruce Island, Alaska. But when it’s time to start building, her husband announces he wants a separation. Facing the end of her marriage and possibly the end of her dream, she decides to go on with the help of friends and moves forward with her plan—alone.

Taking a leap of faith is harder than Kelso imagined, however. She moves into a home with only a three-burner Coleman stove for cooking, and no electricity, phone, or running water. A boat serves as her primary means of transportation.

Her time alone teaches her persistence, determination, and a willingness to do the hard work required. Most importantly, she learns to believe in herself.

In the hopes of setting a road map for others to follow in her footsteps, Kelso shares how she achieved her dream in this inspirational guidebook that demonstrates how having the right attitude can get you through life.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A Warm, Wonderful, Honest Book About Life On A Remote Alaskan Island By Timothy L. Smith I love this finely-crafted, lovingly-written tribute to the people, places, and attitudes of my home town, Ouzinkie, Alaska. Full disclosure: I've known Fran since 1971, and she sent me a copy to review. I immediately bought one to send to my brother. I was so pleased to read her description of my late parents, Norman and Joyce Smith, both of whom died in the village in their eighties. In addition, beloved people like Jenny, Lily, Greg, and the Monks and Nuns of St. Herman come to life in the pages of this gentle, moving, and often humorous book. Spruce Island, Alaska, her home for many years, provided many challenging life lessons, all of which Fran shares with a warm and unassuming tone that will attract many readers. Completely devoid of any of the hype and artificiality of many of the "bush" TV shows about Alaska, this book still manages to describe the difficulties and challenges of living completely off the grid on a remote Alaskan island. And Fran Kelso concentrates not so much on her struggles as on the people she came to know and love. Fran completely understands the concept of being a friend and neighbor. She also has amazingly wise insights into Alaskan village life. Having spent all my school years from Kindergarten through college with Ouzinkie as my home town, I lived in the same environment as Fran describes. Some have experienced village life and gone on to satirize and belittle it; Fran Kelso celebrates it. I predict that this lovely book will go down as a classic in rural Alaskan literature. The book features lovely drawings and photos which help to draw the reader into her topic. Very highly recommended!

We have easily revived our kinship through the internet By Joyce Herold Recently, Fran Kelso, the author of Alaskan Attitudes, found me still in Colorado fifty years after our close friendship there. We have easily revived our kinship through the internet. Fran sprang her latest book on me and asked for my thoughts about it. Read and cogitated over, the book has brought me many enjoyable hours and new insights into where the author has been and who she is. I gladly respond.I recommend Alaskan Attitudes to both the questors who crave an elemental, challenging existence for themselves (preferably in a forest, on a bay!) and the city and town folk who want a field guide to what it’s really like, living up there in Alaska. This book is essentially a straight forward narrative written in direct words and measured cadences. Scattered throughout are descriptions and musings about places, people and happenings that make the reading anything but dull. Spruce Island quietly gets under your skin and you enter a small North Country world. You begin to actually live with Fran and learn how she coped and thrived, with help from various like-souls of Alaska.A land claim was the start and the making of a cabin next. Fran lays out in detail the building components and process - site, design, tools and equipment, nails, lumber, roofing and human know-how, patience and sheer strength. The same meticulous cataloging of how everything went includes mistakes, modifications and, sometimes, perfection. Fran and friends do it all with equanimity.Fran’s “running water” was earned by running out to the creek and hauling water by bucket loads. But she never leaves a tale as a pure “pioneer-woman” bit: she writes, too, of the joys of modern convenience when her water eventually arrived by pump and pipes. That said, it still was the wilderness so hot water was always a hard-won luxury. The search for dry beach wood and its sawing, splitting and stacking were never-ending. Fran seemed to be tiring of it yet she recovered to exultation over a chain saw powered by a never-fail generator, brought up the hill with near disaster. She caught, canned and smoked abundant fish but let others endure the patience needed for hunting. She gathered a whole lexicon of food plants and knew how to cook them and sprinkle them on salads. (That she found avocado, too, is beyond belief…)Perhaps surprising to some go-it-yourself readers is another core of the book, the constant presence, assistance and companionship of other human beings – her son, visitors, neighbors, delivery men, students, a pair of Russian Orthodox monks and more. As an ethnologist (retired from a natural history museum), I particularly admire Fran’s insightful, sensitive approach to the Alutiiq Native Americans in the nearby village of Ouzinkie. Their reserved acceptance of an outsider subtly unfolds throughout the book. Fran had the mind, training and empathy - as well as a banjo and songs from her earlier entertainer’s life - to charm everybody (almost). She clearly depended on the villagers for help, sometimes in the form of “pagooked” necessities. (Read the book and look it up!) In return she committed to giving back and did so, very well, as a teacher and musician. To end my comments in an unexpected way: Hidden in Alaskan Attitudes I found some quite lyrical passages that are almost haiku-like in the author’s plain “Quaker” style. A favorite of mine is the following, which I lay out here as free verse with a few words removed:When it gets down to basics, we needa roof over our heads, food and water. In Alaska, a reliable heat sourceand layers of warm clothing.I had a cabin built near to a creek on an island.I had a good wood stove and a forest of potential firewood. Now I just had to have groceries. So…now go and read.Addendum: Lacking are maps of Spruce Island, to clarify the personal geography of daily life, and of the Kodiak area, to trace trips by boat and seaplane. Also, since Fran missed mentioning books and reading as escape midst isolation, whence the worldly quotes that begin each chapter?

They are rooted in their culture’s rich traditions, yet they stand at the cutting edge of change. This is the crossroads where many Ugandan women find themselves today. With dignity and grace, they play a complex social role, balancing worldly sophistication with reverence for the values of their upbringing.

In Crossroads, a group of these women explore the past that shaped them and the future they hope to build, telling varied stories about a rapidly changing society where they serve both as guardians of culture and harbingers of reform.

While one woman examines the cultural implications of Ugandan names, another describes being tortured in a secret prison, and a third traces the mix of African and imported religions that shaped her. One mocks girls’ traditional sex education, while another voices her love of sports and a third reflects on her struggle to overcome a legacy of growing up in a war zone. All challenge social expectations, yet many view "modernization" with ambivalence.

Covering topics from sex roles to western ideas of "development," this compelling picture of the lives of women in today’s Uganda, sometimes funny and sometimes tragic, provides powerful testimony to the strength of the human spirit.

Book review taken from my blog - katherineandbooks.weebly.com By Amazon Customer First, I would like to thank the author for providing me with a copy of this book. I was given this book for review, which made me reluctant to read it at first, but was blown away by how amazing this book was.Rating : ☺☺☺☺☺Do I recommend it : Yes!Would I reread it : Probably not because it was on my Kindle and I hate e-books...Uganda Crossroads is a collection of stories written by Ugandan women, telling their lives, childhoods and other stories as a woman in a country where men are dominent. There were some about mariage, childhood, studies and other various topics young women go through.↙ What I didn't like about the book :I find that every story could've been a novel of its own, because there was so much content in each short story that, even though all stories were super entertaining, the stories felt crammed and all ended abruptly. This has nothing to do with the actual book, but reading it on a Kindle app on my phone kind of ruined it for me and made the reading experience less enjoyable. I wish I had a hard copy instead, but again, it has nothing to do with the book!↗ What I liked about the book :The different voices of the different women was my favourite thing about the book. Everyone had a different story, yet were all connected and had something in common. The way they were so positive and open-minded was really refreshing and made it a pleasure to read. The writing style and editing were spot on! I have never enjoyed a book's writing nearly as much as I loved the writing in this book. The vocabulary was rich and everything read as a poem. The rhythm of the book and the way specific words are chosen made this book an amazing piece of literature. The educative and informative side of this book is something I deeply enjoyed as well, because not only was it a testimony, it also taught so much about Ugandan culture and how different they are from the Western culture. Everything was raw and real, not sugar-coated, and the women in the book were all so powerful despite everything they have been through. This anthology taught me so much and had a strong feminist view, which I loved.Overall…I definitely suggest this book for anyone who's up for something different, refreshing, and short. Again, thanks so much to the author for the copy, I absolutely ADORE the book! If you'd like to buy it, here is a link.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Insightful and enlightening! By Mark Schenkel I am a Kampala-based journalist and I believe that Crossroads presents what is perhaps the most insightful and enlightening non-fiction publication yet about the search for identity among women in Uganda. Quite a lot has been written about this, but Crossroads stands out because of the way in which the authors take us through their most personal, inward dilemmas and doubts without necessarily arriving at clear-cut answers. The authors are not afraid to show their vulnerability, and admit to their ongoing soul-searching. This makes the book all the more interesting. In fact, one gets to understand that the ongoing reflection on how to strike a balance between local customs & traditions on the one side and modern, Western influences on the other side, itself becomes part of women’s identities. Most of the (relatively well-educated, urban) women do not necessarily end up embracing ‘Western’ values whilst rejecting ‘African’ ones, or the other way around. Rather, they shape their identities around aspects from either side that they deem relevant, attractive and useful. One does not have to exclude the other. For instance, it turns out that living life with self-respect and assertiveness does not mean one cannot subscribe to certain local customs which Westerners may view as ‘disrespectful’ towards women – such as kneeling for a man. It might be easy to dismiss a woman over such an act but the point is: one has to read a book like Crossroads to understand how women in Uganda arrive at their decisions. The stories deepen our understanding.

Very Emotional By Charity Martinez For full review please search "5 Girls Book Reviews" in a search engine and/or Facebook.REVIEW BY: Michaela, age 11 years, 8 monthsMAY CONTAIN SPOILER:Ummmmmm...I wouldn't really recommend this book for kids, some of the stories are okay for kids and some are not because they talk about more adult things. I had to skip over those types of stories. However, this is a really good book and I find it amazing to hear about these women's lives. The women really put so much into writing their stories that it is absolutely unbelievable. It is very emotional and made me cry a few times. My favorite stories were about the girl with sores and Metallic Glory.

A beautifully designed collection of essays on war, loss and remembrance to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the writing of Canada's most famous poem.     In early 1915, the death of a young friend on the battlefields of Ypres inspired Canadian soldier, field surgeon and poet John McCrae to write "In Flanders Fields." Within months of the poem's December 1915 publication in the British magazine Punch it became part of the collective consciousness in North America and Europe, and its extraordinary power has endured over the decades and across generations. In this anthology, Canada's finest historians, novelists and poets contemplate the evolving meaning of the poem; the man who wrote it and the World War I setting from which it emerged; its themes of valour, grief and remembrance; and the iconic image of the poppy.      Among the thirteen contributors: Lieutenant-General Roméo Dallaire (ret'd) writes about the emotional meaning of the poem for war veterans; Tim Cook describes the rich and varied life of McCrae; Frances Itani revisits her time in Flanders, and mines the acts of witnessing and remembering; Kevin Patterson offers a riveting depiction of the adrenaline-fueled work of a WWI field surgeon; Mary Janigan reveals the poem's surprisingly divisive effect during the 1917 federal election; Ken Dryden tells us how lines from the poem ended up on the wall of the Montreal Canadiens' dressing room; and Patrick Lane recalls a Remembrance Day from his childhood in a moving reflection on how war shapes us all.     Gorgeously designed in full colour with archival and contemporary images, In Flanders Fields: 100 Years will reflect and illuminate the importance of art in how we process war and loss.

On October 15, 1985, two pipe bombs shook the calm of Salt Lake City, Utah, killing two people. The only link-both victims belonged to the Mormon Church. The next day, a third bomb was detonated in the parked car of church-going family man, Mark Hoffman. Incredibly, he survived. It wasn't until authorities questioned the strangely evasive Hoffman that another, more shocking link between the victims emerged...

The Mormon Murders, by Steven Naifeh, Gregory White Smith

From Publishers Weekly As part of a scathing depiction of a deceitful, materialistic Mormon Church, lawyers Naifeh and Smith (co-editors of the biennial directory The Best Lawyers in America , etc.) point out that the 1985 Salt Lake City scandals and bombings that convulsed the community had a precedent in certain dubious practices of the church's prophet and founder Joseph Smith. The suspenseful plot, involving a series of murders and a large cast of Mormons and police investigators, centers on the purchase and suppression by church officials of authentic and forged documents that cast doubts on basic tenets of their faith and attested to the cover-up of Smith's unsavory past. Under the threat of blackmail, the church bought many of these documents from the dealer-bomber Mark Hofmann; according to the authors, Hoffmann, after confessing the murders and forgeries, was allowed, thanks to the church's political influence, to plea bargain the murder indictment into a manslaughter charge thereby sparing the church an embarrassing trial that could have revealed its complicity. I read this book shortly after its publication, and found it very enlightening and true to form. It was a terrifying mystery when the events occurred, and the media never fully explained the behind-the-scenes facts surrounding the bombings. I feel this book was very objective about the Mormon religeon and its reaction to the events surrounding the bombings and forgeries. The book is a fascinating account of the greed and murders, and anyone remembering the events will find this an eye-opener. For those who aren't familiar with the history, it's a wonderfully written, insightful book that you'll find difficult to put down.

Incredibly detailed case superbly presented By A Customer Each time I read this book (by my count, an even half-dozen to date), I marvel at the talent of these writers for turning an overwhelming volume of dry and complex research into a clear, compelling page-turner with more twists and turns than a mountain road. Aside from the crash course in history and culture of Latter Day Saints, I'm constantly intrigued by the detailed backgrounds provided for the antique document market, the business of printing and forgeries and the saint (no pun intended)-like patience of police investigators. All this, fleshed out with the strongly-drawn personalities involved, raises the normally lurid "true-crime" genre from the sensationalistic gutter and places it squarely into journalism -- definitely a new standard. There are a number of books published on this topic, and I've read most of them. This is the most comprehensive, the least "slanted", and certainly the most fascinating. I've got two copies -- one to read and re-read, and one to loan!

19 of 22 people found the following review helpful. I found this book to astonishingly informative and detailed! By A Customer The book names names and places and supports itself from an outside perspective in a very objective and informative manner. The scenario and politics of this mover and shaker conservative and very powerful organization is accurately portrayed in a bone chilling portrayal which enlightens the unaware reader as to the endless means man will go to to establish power and wealth--even to the ends of murder and self-conviction that the action is the Lord's will. I found the twists and exposures of this book a real page-turner and recognizing several of the persons described therein, found it amazingly accurate. An excellent and gutsy read for those within and without the organization of the Church. It has apparently been blackballed in this state. I have not been able to find it in any bookstore nor library. I purchased my copy in Chicago. There is apparently such thing in Utah as the Separation of Church and State.

There are 2.3 million prisoners in the United States—And for 40 chilling days J.W. Scott was one of them. All it took was a moment of poor judgment to send a law-abiding citizen into The Dog Pound, and the heart of a system which treats men as animals. Lockup is no place for a middle-aged, middle-class man … but even a lifetime of safe choices wasn't enough to prevent the humiliation, financial burden, emotional distress and physical danger of Scott’s six-week ordeal. Bloodied, broken and terrified, Scott finds unlikely friendship within the jail population ... only to later be shunned by the outside world upon his release. Vivid and gritty, “The Dog Pound” is a cautionary tale for all law-abiding citizens, and it should be a wake-up call for the American penal system.

My favorites are Monster (Kody Scott) and You Got Nothing Coming. Those books made a big impression on me earlier in my life and fascinated me about what happens in Jail and Prison. This book is a quick read. It's only $3 on the Kindle and I think I was done with it in a few hours. The author is likable and I enjoyed his self-deprecating style of writing. The story is interesting and even though 40 days doesn't seem like much initially it sure does by the time you finish the book.I think the descriptive terms he uses gets a little tiresome. "Boots Clomp" and "Keys Jangle" are literally used every other page. I actually told my wife that after the first few pages I was getting tired of the keys jangling and she told me that I must be exaggerating. I proceeded to read each reference of boots clomping and keys jangling to her out loud as I came across them until she told me STOP, YOU WIN! IT'S DRVING ME CRAZY!Epilogue was surprising and that's when I knew I had sympathy for the author. He's a good guy and I wish him the best. Keep writing, Jack!

It made me appreciate how good a life I have right now. And I guess it is true... innocent people get convicted of crimes every day and are put in jail to do hard time. TV shows like "Scared Straight" demonstrate how bad kids can be frightened into turning their lives around by spending a day in jail with real prisoners, however what about ones who have never been down the path of crime and get put in jail. The Dog Pound brings out the chilling details from the courtroom conviction right through the 40 day jail time until J.W. Scotts release. Pick up a copy. It's worth the read.

Sometimes the road to happily-ever-after began with two simple words: "Yes, Sir." For CEO Caroline Turner certain truths were inescapable. No matter how powerful, successful, and pretty she was, it didn't matter when it came to the number on her scale -- a number she wasn't at all happy with. Like every other obstacle in her life though, she had a plan for overcoming it. The famous Maxim Volkov chef and fitness expert wasn't cheap, and he wasn't exactly falling in line with her wishes either, but he was perfect for the job ... and extremely easy on the eyes. However alpha and devastatingly handsome the taciturn Russian might, he seemed to have a different understanding about who the boss was in their particular arrangement. She'd just have to put him in his place... and try to ignore the insane urge to kneel at his feet. Taking the job offered by the spoiled, if intriguing American CEO was something Maxim wouldn't normally do. He didn't need the money, and he usually found Western women trying at best, maddening at worst. But something about the pretty Caroline spoke to him, her defiance, and acid-tongued ways hiding an appealing vulnerability he longed to bring to the fore. Despite her self-image, he saw little wrong with the curvy, brunette beauty. Nothing wrong that is that couldn't be cured with a little strict, bare bottom discipline, and some loving, sensual aftercare. That the appealingly disobedient, mouthy American woman would surrender to him was never in doubt. The only question was when. But behind Caroline's strong, professional facade, something else lurked, a part of her painful past that threatened to endanger her future -- and perhaps her life. Hiding his own potentially explosive secrets, Maxim must help her finally put that dark chapter behind her -- no matter what it took, no matter how much she might fight it, no matter how much it hurt. Worse, hated competitors, circling like sharks, threatened to destroy all that Caroline had worked so hard to create. Struggling with demons both internal and external, her last, best hope might just be a man as hard and implacable as a Siberian winter... Publisher's Warning: Intended for mature audiences. 18 and over only! This sensuous romance contains explicit sexual situations, spanking, and anal play. This book deals with eating disorders and could be a trigger for some. This book can be read as a standalone. Enjoyment of the novel will be enhanced by reading the previous entries in the series, but it's not necessary.

Like serious cooking not just eggs and cereal. Yes to Maxim yes please!! His words are like sweet honey that definitely makes me need some alone time. A panty melting Russian man who knows how to spank – YES!…and then there is Jason. *dreamy sigh* A sexy as hell bodyguard that spanks when you don’t take care of yourself… uh yes please. Now, he has a wife but still manages to help keep Caroline in line. I even looked it up in Google translate!) Imagine that being said by a tall, sexy Russian man...who's holding a belt with your name on it. And of course, in this scenario, you want that belt.Is it getting hot in here? :) Okay, so here's the scoop. Sexy, intelligent, and rude to her underlings, CEO Caroline is desperate to lose 20 lbs, thinking it's necessary to get even farther up the business ladder. She hires sexy fitness chef Maxim directly from Russia to be her live-in chef and coach. In the meantime, she fantasizes about the anonymous stranger who makes sexy whipping videos online. As coincidence would have it, Maxim IS the whip-master, and he's more than eager to motivate Caroline with more than words, and convince her that she's gorgeous the way she is already -- she just needs to eat better and be kinder to her employees. As they launch into a passionate dominant/submissive affair, it's clear that Caroline might not need to lose weight after all...but she just may lose her heart. Can I just say that Maxim is seriously one of the sexiest spanky romance heroes ever? OMG. Seriously, he's hot. YA khochu odin raz , kak on. (That is supposed to say, "I want one just like him.")
