PDF Ebook Online Rebbe: The Life and Teachings of Menachem M. Schneerson, the Most Influential Rabbi in Modern History, by Joseph Telushkin

In this enlightening biography, Joseph Telushkin offers a captivating portrait of the late Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, a towering figure who saw beyond conventional boundaries to turn his movement, Chabad-Lubavitch, into one of the most dynamic and widespread organizations ever seen in the Jewish world. At once an incisive work of history and a compendium of Rabbi Schneerson's teachings, Rebbe is the definitive guide to understanding one of the most vital, intriguing figures of the last centuries.

From his modest headquarters in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, the Rebbe advised some of the world's greatest leaders and shaped matters of state and society. Statesmen and artists as diverse as Ronald Reagan, Robert F. Kennedy, Yitzchak Rabin, Menachem Begin, Elie Wiesel, and Bob Dylan span the spectrum of those who sought his counsel. The Rebbe was the only rabbi ever to receive the Congressional Gold Medal and to have an American national day, Education and Sharing Day, proclaimed in his honor. No one has succeeded him in his position. Nevertheless, 20 years after his death, his movement has doubled in size, spreading to more than 80 countries, and his impact resonates still. But what was the secret of the Rebbe's success and influence? What principles of leadership guided him? And how did he rally such extraordinary devotion and resolve?

Rebbe explores Schneerson's overarching philosophies against the backdrop of treacherous history, revealing his clandestine operations to rescue and sustain Jews in the Soviet Union and his critical role in the expansion of the food stamp program throughout the United States. More broadly it examines how he became in effect an ambassador for Jews globally and how he came to be viewed by many as not only a spiritual archetype but a savior.

But alas, Rabbi Telushkin is a favorite author of mine and he doesn't disappoint. I feel that I now have a more intimate familiarity and perhaps appreciation for the Chabad and certainly for Rebbe.

67 of 71 people found the following review helpful. Thoroughly researched By Jacob P This book is the result of 5 years of intensive research, into the life of a rather introverted man. Telushkin does an incredible job of portraying Rabbi Schneerson, not only by illustrating key biographical moments and pouring over private correspondence, but also by highlighting his most influential teachings. I can't think of another biography that is as detailed and inspiring.

You will think speak & behave differently. How one person can be so great, and influence presidents, yet never loosing site of the individual even a child.

Saving Tanyah- Natanyah Hayles. The autobiography of a walking miracle. When I lost the use of my hands, that was the beginning of rock bottom. Everything that could go wrong did. Many thought I would die. After all, I looked like a skeleton. But Jesus had other plans: and not just for my health. That's when I met Him. This is my story. Excerpt- "When Jesus rescued me, He plucked my soul out of hell. He went 'over budget' and 'over board,' so He could overturn my death sentence. Isn't it amazing how much a soul is worth to Him?"

James S. Brown is an important figure in the westward expansion of the United States. As a member of the Mormon Battalion, he discovered new lands and tamed wild country. He was present at the discovery of gold in California and helped establish new frontiers. As a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, he helped bring the gospel to foreign lands. His incredible story has inspired readers for over a century and, as the posterity of James S. Brown continues to grow, so does his impact on history. Hugh B. Brown once wrote of his grandfather, "It would be difficult to state in just what phase of his career the virtues of James S. Brown appeared strongest. As a member of the Mormon Battalion he was all that a soldier could be and more than the average man would have been; as a scout and Indian fighter he was brave, and humane and prudent; as a missionary to the South Sea Islands he stood true to his post while savage man-eaters were hungering for his flesh. As a husband and father his course was the same manly, undeviating path of uprightness. His was among those immortal spirits that hewed out this commonwealth and left the impress of their noble lives on the hearts of their people."

“Go home, nigger. We do not want your kind here.” All I heard was the word “nigger” every time I turned around. I was fighting for my place in this world and struggling for my freedom. No one was going to take either my dream or my career away from me. I am going to show Ozark Airlines I belong there and I can smile and do the same job as the white girls. I walked through the path of racism and prejudice, being the first black stewardess to fly for an airline in the Midwest in 1969, and circumstances has made it unbearable at times because of the color of my skin. As I listen to the hate words, it gave me the strength and the courage as a human being to go forward with my goals, yet there was a secret about me that allowed me to beat the odds and fulfill my dreams for thirty-three years as a flight attendant.

Most of all its her story of her faith and love for God that gets her through her life experiences By Camille Johnson As a first time author, Maria Howell- Jenkins has written a straight- forward and "great read". "Wings of Color" is a story of humor, hardship, stamina, and racism. Most of all its her story of her faith and love for God that gets her through her life experiences.Submitted by: L. C. H.

Best Ebook PDF The Secret of Golf: The Story of Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus, by Joe Posnanski

New York Times BestsellerThe first time they met, at an exhibition match in 1967, Tom Watson was a seventeen-year-old high school student and Jack Nicklaus, at twenty-seven, was already the greatest golfer in the world. Though they shared some similarities—they were both Midwestern boys who had learned how to play golf at their fathers’ country clubs—they differed in many ways. Nicklaus played a game of consummate control and precision. Watson hit the ball all over the place. Nicklaus lacked charm and theatrics, and he was thoroughly despised by most golf fans because he had displaced Arnold Palmer as king of the golf world. Watson was one of those Arnold Palmer fans. Yet over the next twenty years their seemingly divergent paths collided as they battled against each other again and again for a place at the top of the sport and drove each other to ever-soaring heights of accomplishment. Spanning from that first match through the “Duel in the Sun” at Turnberry in 1977 to Watson’s miraculous near-victory at Turnberry as he approached sixty, and informed by interviews with both players over many years, The Secret of Golf is Joe Posnanski’s intimate account of the most remarkable rivalry and (eventual) friendship in modern golf.

THE SECRET

EVERY SHOT MATTERS

One of the big differences between amateur and pro golfers is how we practice. I see amateurs out on the driving range just hitting golf balls one after another without thinking. All they’re doing is ingraining bad habits. It drives me crazy to see that. Every shot you hit should matter. Every shot you hit should have a purpose. Ask yourself: “Why am I here?” TOM WATSON Tom Watson believes this: The point of playing golf is playing golf well. He does not accept any counterargument. Over the years, I have said to him, “Look, some people just want to play golf for fun. They don’t care what they shoot. They just want to be out there, in the sunshine, among the trees, walking around with friends and a beer and . . .” At this point, Watson will cut me off and bark, “It’s no fun shooting a lousy score.” This is Watson’s core conviction. No, he does not think every amateur can be a great golfer, but he does think every amateur can be a better golfer with a little guidance, a little work, and, most important, a shift in ambition. Many times I have watched him react when people ask him how much they should practice to improve their game. He grins that tight grin of his, the one that reflects not joy but some other elusive emotion, and the man who practiced as much as any golfer since Hogan says, “You determine that. But I’ll bet it’s more than you practice now.” Late in his life, in 2014, Watson was asked to captain the U.S. Ryder Cup team for the second time. The first time, twenty-one years earlier, the team won a stirring victory over Europe; this time things went wrong. Watson was a sixty-five-year-old golf legend, grumpy, stubborn, and hungry to win in a way that might be considered unseemly to younger players. And the players on the team were young, rich, successful, and perhaps a little bit satisfied. The Ryder Cup, after all, is a golf exhibition between players from the United States and players from Europe. It is only as important as the players make it. On the Saturday night before the final day of matches, the U.S. team always has a party for the players and their wives or girlfriends. This should give you an idea of the light atmosphere surrounding the Ryder Cup. The United States trailed by a sizable margin, and Watson was fuming. Several of his moves had backfired. The team had disappointed him. But the Saturday night party is a long-standing tradition, and the players gave Watson a signed replica Ryder Cup trophy. According to various news stories, quoting various anonymous players, Watson horrified everyone by grumping that he did not want the replica. He had come for the real Ryder Cup. With Watson, it always comes back to that question: Why am I here? Many years ago, when I wrote a daily column for Watson’s hometown newspaper, The Kansas City Star, he called to complain about something I had written. Complaints are part of a sportswriter’s daily life, of course, but this was an unusual call. Watson did not call to correct something I wrote about golf. He did not even call to criticize the grammar, though he has a well-earned reputation as a grammar scold. No, he called to tell me to stop writing those damned list columns. I was still a young columnist then, still finding my way, and every week I would write a column filled with lists. The lists could be of anything: “Five rules baseball should change” or “Four reasons why the Masters is better than the U.S. Open” or “Six teams that should change their nicknames.” It was a gimmick, filler, but it seemed to me a relatively inoffensive thing. Watson was offended. He called me at the office. Best I remember I had never had a complete conversation with him before. “This is Tom Watson,” he said. “Let me ask you a question. What do you want to be?” “I’m sorry?” “What do you want to be?” he repeated. At this point, I stammered something. “Do you want to be great?” he asked, piercing my pauses. “Do you want to be thought of the way the greatest sportswriters are thought of, the way people think about Red Smith and Jim Murray and Frank Deford? Do you want to be loved like they are loved? I think it’s a question you need to ask yourself. Why do you do what you do? What’s it all about? Do you want to be great? Not enough people ask themselves that question. It’s the most important question. It’s the only question.” And then he asked me again, “So, do you want to be great?” There was Watson’s question. Ask yourself: Why am I here? “Yeah,” I mumbled. “Yeah, I mean, sure, I want to be great.” “Then stop writing those damned list columns.” And he said good-bye and hung up the phone.

By Robert Steven Thomas While this book may not appeal to a wide range of readers, it is well-written, humorous, engaging and presents a window into the friendship between two of America's all-time greatest sports heroes. It is, at the same time, wholesome, refreshing and historically anecdotal. In the "now-age" of LeBron James and other sports mega-stars like him, to the many among us who are under age "forty-something," the book may seem like an ancient lesson in nostalgia ... but the strength of character revealed in these two legends (Jack Nicklaus & Tom Watson) is something that is timeless and should be more widely understood by our youth to help restore a better future of well-being for both our nation's society and the entire planet.

Reading this, you take the journey of a lifetime with Tom Watson, from his young struggles to his golfing prime to that remarkable 2009 Open Championship at Turnberry, and you also see how a rivalry with Jack Nicklaus transformed into a friendship and bond only those who have been to the mountaintop in sports can truly make and understand.

Good book - could've been much better By History and Science Craig I"m a big fan of Joe Posnanski, and having grown up in Kansas during Tom Watson's heyday, a big fan of Tom Watson as well. This book reads like a Joe Pos column (which I like), but the 18 golf holes/chapters format seemed a little forced, as the 18 holes seemed to have little to do with the actual story. In addition, there were glimpses of Tom Watson the man, although IMO he could have delved much deeper here. It would have been fine to skim the surface here if it was for the sake of delving into the golf matches in great detail. But we really only got descriptions of the big turning points of the golf matches. So I (personally) wasn't satisfied with either aspect. Finally, there are some sections of the book where actual golf tips are shared. These were even more spare than the details of Watson and the golf matches against Nicklaus. IMO, these should have been omitted completely. Maybe I missed the point. While the above are all criticisms, this is still an enjoyable read, but it could have much more, I think.

Emmy & Oliver, by Robin Benway

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—Emmy and Oliver were the best of friends up until the third grade, when Oliver disappeared, leaving their community forever changed. Years later, high school senior Emmy still lives next door to the house where Oliver lived with his mother and she has never been able to forget him. Emmy lives with the consequences of Oliver's kidnapping, as her parents smother her with rules and restrictions meant to keep her safe. She doesn't feel like she can be her own person with the weight of the past constantly influencing her life. But then one day, Oliver is back. He is grown up, guarded, and confused. Oliver thought that his mother had abandoned him, when in fact his father kidnapped him, and he was discovered by chance when he gives fingerprints on a school field trip. Although Emmy is a vaguely familiar face, he doesn't know how to bridge the time gap and find a place to belong in this community again. Oliver and Emmy try to do just that, amid the chaos surrounding Oliver's past and Emmy's uncertain future. The circumstances of this story provide a perfect setting to explore how two young people navigate new adulthood and forge new identities. This book is at times heartfelt, funny, irreverent, and ultimately satisfying. VERDICT Plot driven as well as introspective, it is a good choice for fans of Stephanie Perkins's Anna and the French Kiss (Dutton, 2010) or any of Sarah Dessen's novels.—Tara Kron, formerly at School Library Journal

Review Emmy & Oliver is wonderful. Funny, heartbreaking, and true... just like life. Robin Benway has written characters I felt like I’d known forever, and was so sad to see go. A must read. (Morgan Matson, author of Since You've Been Gone)“Robin Benway writes with her full heart. Emmy & Oliver is a genuinely sweet and funny novel bursting with the inextinguishable forces of love-between parents and children, distant and inseparable friends, new and reunited lovers.” (Stephanie Perkins, New York Times bestselling author of Isla and the Happily Ever After)“Benway examines split loyalties, the impact of confessionals, and how broken bonds can be mended… Benway’s intriguing premise and honest tone are a winning combination as she movingly portrays the growing trust between her characters.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))“At times heartfelt, funny, irreverent, and ultimately satisfying… a good choice for fans of Stephanie Perkins’s Anna and the French Kiss or any of Sarah Dessen’s novels.” (School Library Journal)“Benway fearlessly examines the effects of loss and return from every perspective… Hope, confusion, frustration, and love coexist without shame as teens and parents come to grips with the realization that nothing stays the same no matter how desperately we want it to.” (Booklist)“Benway peels away the surface and digs down to the raw emotions the teens and their families feel… as a portrait of the emerging adolescent, it engages.” (Kirkus)“This realistic and painful story... twists and turns... until the bittersweet, yet perfect, ending. (Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA))“Emmy’s narration is smart and sassy, and the romance plot is satisfying... An unusual blend of a soulmate story, a melodramatic plot, and a realistic book about adjustment, growth, and change, this will please romance fans as well as pragmatic souls with a sentimental streak.” (Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books)

From that cover I thought I was going to get a sweet romance but it was more than that. It was about growing up, family and discovering oneself.Oliver and Emmy were next door neighbors and best friends if not on the way to becoming more but one day Oliver doesn't return after spending the weekend with his dad because his father decided to kidnap him. A decade later Oliver is found and his world is pretty much turned upside down. He was lied to by his father and doesn't know what to think anymore. He was a very conflicted character because a part of him still loved his dad very much regardless of what he did because his dad and the life he had with him was all he knew and now he finds out his mom didn't abandon him and he was missing the whole time he was living his other life not to mention because he was abducted at such a young age he barely remembers anyone including Emmy.As far as Emmy goes her life was affected deeply by Oliver's kidnapping. Besides the fact that she lost her best friend that day, her life would never be the same. Her parents are extra protective of her in fear of what happened to Oliver she has to sneak around to do the one thing she loves the most and there hasn't been a day that has passed that she hasn't thought of Oliver. Both characters were very likable and my heart broke for each of them for different reasons. I loved that the parents were not absent in their lives like a lot of young adult books, there was conflict on both sides between Oliver and his mom and Emmy and her parents. Also, two other notable characters that are worth mentioning is Caro and Drew they were Emmy's friends and also knew Oliver from when they were kids and I have to admit they were great friends with their own issues that they were dealing with.Overall this was a great coming of age story and I highly recommend it.

A halted friendship, paused for ten years, was so tragic and interesting that I was desperate to know how it played out By Teen Reads When Emmy is seven years old, her best friend and neighbor Oliver is kidnapped on a Friday after school by his father. For ten years, Oliver remains a ghost --- an invisible fixture in the community --- and one that haunts Emmy relentlessly, even as she tries to live her own life. The afternoon Oliver was kidnapped, he had signed yes on a note their best friend Caroline had written him: Do you like Emmy? Yes or No. And it’s that note that she keeps crumpled and worn in a secret place where not even her remaining best friends know about it. And just as she had been learning to have a life separate of his memory --- her parents had treated her like she was the one who disappeared all those years ago --- everything changes when Oliver is found again.Honestly, I was bit apprehensive about how I would like the book; I’ve been burned before by high concept ideas where the characters just didn’t live up to the world they were created in. I’ve also put down multiple novels where characters felt too young for their stories. Would this seem like a middle-grade novel masquerading as a YA? I’m happy to report that this wasn’t the case at all. I sometimes felt that Emmy’s voice was a little young but I quickly forgot about that as I rushed through the story. The idea of a halted friendship, paused for ten years, was so tragic and interesting that I was desperate to know how it would play out.Even as I fell in love with Emmy and Oliver’s easy banter and fell into the comfortable camaraderie of Emmy’s friend group, I was constantly aware of the issue at the heart of the book. Oliver was kidnapped when he was seven. His father stole him away from his mom and his life in California, going so far as to change his memory and keeping the truth for him as he grew. The book never strays away from that; instead, Robin handles it with aplomb, not ignoring the messy complexities of familial abduction.I think that while maintaining the heart of the story --- Emmy and Oliver’s stalled and revived relationship—Robin also confronts the main premise, and the reality: parental and familial kidnapping is real and it destroys lives. In doing so, Robin created a fictional tale that feels real, as heartbreaking and tragic as the stories on the news, except this time, we get an inside glimpse at the ones left behind.I also loved that Emmy wasn't a character who pined over Oliver the whole book. She was introduced as a character who was independent and trying to find her own place away from the gap that her best friend left in their lives. I really enjoyed her point of view throughout EMMY & OLIVER as she grappled with whether or not it was good that Oliver came back --- for her or for him.All in all, this is a story that felt light and enjoyable for a summer read but intense and rewarding as a page-turner. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this book to anyone. I imagine it will be on many “Best Of” lists, as it should be. This story is important and wonderful and I look forward to the discussion and thoughts it will no doubt attract.Reviewed by Brianna Robinson

But I saw so many great reviews. I am pretty sure I saw only good things. Then I got scared because my expectations were through the roof. But alas, Emmy & Oliver came through and swept me off my feet.Emmy and Oliver were neighbors and best friends when Oliver was taken by his father when he was seven. Ten years later he is found and back next door.Since Oliver has been gone Emmy has pretty much been on lock down. Her parents, understandably, were very strict after Oliver's kidnapping. Some would think that might ease up over time but not for them. Since they are so overbearing Emmy, who truly is a good kid, has to sneak behind their backs at times. She loves to surf but her parents would never let her so she finds ways to go without them knowing. They want her to stay home for college so she has to apply to a different school without their knowledge.Oliver is totally shoved back into his home which really isn't his home anymore. His mother is remarried with twins. He doesn't really remember any of his old friends. Plus he has to deal with the news and media. And everyone knows high school sucks normally let alone having to go after coming back after ten years of being kidnapped. I felt really bad for Oliver. I can't imagine his thoughts and feelings. You could tell he still loved his dad despite what he did. He missed him. And it was hard for him to be part of this new family and be the person they thought he would be."Sometimes, the things people don't say are louder than the words that come out of their mouths."Emmy and Oliver together were adorable. They were a bit awkward as they should have been. Ten years and crazy circumstances dictate it being awkward. But they were so cute. Surfing helped them open up to each other. Also, Emily really was a great listener and Oliver trusted her. I was happy that he was able to talk to someone so he didn't completely freak out.Loved Caro and Drew who are Emmy (and at one point Oliver's) best friends. They were fun, supportive but still acted like teenagers. Which by that I mean they still fought a bit, struggled with the new dynamic of having Oliver back and did some dumb teenage things.I think the thing that really made this stand out from similar novels is the characters voices. I really felt like they were authentic. I may be a gazillion years removed from high school but it felt like how real high schoolers would talk, act and be with each other. If not it is how they should be. I would have wanted to be friends with them. The story is told from Emmy's POV. It moved along really quickly and I finished it within two days. I am so glad I got to this sooner rather than later as it really just hit on so many levels. And if you still haven't read it I highly suggest picking it up ASAP!
