Florence, April 5th, 1874.—They told me I should find Italy greatly changed; and in seven-and-twenty years there is room for changes. But to me everything is so perfectly the same that I seem to be living my youth over again; all the forgotten impressions of that enchanting time come back to me. At the moment they were powerful enough; but they afterwards faded away. What in the world became of them? Whatever becomes of such things, in the long intervals of consciousness? Where do they hide themselves away? in what unvisited cupboards and crannies of our being do they preserve themselves? They are like the lines of a letter written in sympathetic ink; hold the letter to the fire for a while and the grateful warmth brings out the invisible words. It is the warmth of this yellow sun of Florence that has been restoring the text of my own young romance; the thing has been lying before me today as a clear, fresh page. There have been moments during the last ten years when I have fell so portentously old, so fagged and finished, that I should have taken as a very bad joke any intimation that this present sense of juvenility was still in store for me. It won’t last, at any rate; so I had better make the best of it. But I confess it surprises me. I have led too serious a life; but that perhaps, after all, preserves one’s youth. At all events, I have travelled too far, I have worked too hard, I have lived in brutal climates and associated with tiresome people. When a man has reached his fifty-second year without being, materially, the worse for wear—when he has fair health, a fair fortune, a tidy conscience and a complete exemption from embarrassing relatives—I suppose he is bound, in delicacy, to write himself happy. But I confess I shirk this obligation. I have not been miserable; I won’t go so far as to say that—or at least as to write it. But happiness—positive happiness—would have been something different. I don’t know that it would have been better, by all measurements—that it would have left me better off at the present time. But it certainly would have made this difference—that I should not have been reduced, in pursuit of pleasant images, to disinter a buried episode of more than a quarter of a century ago. I should have found entertainment more—what shall I call it?—more contemporaneous. I should have had a wife and children, and I should not be in the way of making, as the French say, infidelities to the present. Of course it’s a great gain to have had an escape, not to have committed an act of thumping folly; and I suppose that, whatever serious step one might have taken at twenty-five, after a struggle, and with a violent effort, and however one’s conduct might appear to be justified by events, there would always remain a certain element of regret; a certain sense of loss lurking in the sense of gain; a tendency to wonder, rather wishfully, what might have been. What might have been, in this case, would, without doubt, have been very sad, and what has been has been very cheerful and comfortable; but there are nevertheless two or three questions I might ask myself. Why, for instance, have I never married—why have I never been able to care for any woman as I cared for that one? Ah, why are the mountains blue and why is the sunshine warm? Happiness mitigated by impertinent conjectures—that’s about my ticket.

Though the narrator is an "old soldier" rather than an "old novelist", James is there. You might call this "The Man Who Thought Too Much", as he turns out to be like a hero or two of his who obsess over their mistaken assumptions about the motives of others without ever going to the source to clear things up. Still pining over a long lost love, it takes the example of a younger, perhaps wiser man to teach him the possible "alternative" ending.

A very Australian story of heroism and healing.

In 2004 Garth Callender, a junior cavalry officer, was deployed to Iraq. He quickly found his feet leading convoys of armoured vehicles through the streets of Baghdad and into the desert beyond. But one morning his crew was targeted in a roadside bomb attack. Garth became Australia's first serious casualty in the war.

After recovering from his injuries, Garth returned to Iraq in 2006 as second-in-command of the Australian Army's security detachment in Baghdad. He found a city in the grip of a rising insurgency. His unit had to contend with missile attacks, suicide bombers and the death by misadventure of one of their own, Private Jake Kovco.

Determined to prevent the kinds of bomb attacks that left him scarred, Garth volunteered once more in 2009 - to lead a weapons intelligence team in Afghanistan. He was helicoptered to blast zones in the aftermath of attacks, and worked to identify the insurgent bomb-makers responsible. Revealing, moving, funny and full of drama, Garth Callender's story is one of a kind.

Garth Callender left the regular Australian Army in 2013 after a distinguished seventeen-year career, during which he served in Iraq and Afghanistan and rose to the rank of major. He now works for an Australian technology company that is developing new ways to detect concealed explosives.

Praise for After the Blast:

'I urge you to read this important, engaging book. There are so few firsthand accounts from our frontline soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.'-Leigh Sales

'Garth Callender, a wounded veteran, tells his story of multiple combat tours with acid intensity. Stark, brutal and honest, After the Blast exposes the ghastly business of modern warfare. It is an uncompromising account that will shock some readers. Callender pulls no punches; his raw emotions, fears, loves, frustrations and anger are unflinchingly recalled. This book provides a rare insight to the harsh realities of Australia's contemporary conflicts.'-Major General John Cantwell, AO, DSC, author of Exit Wounds

'Garth Callender shows you what soldiers really think - and, more importantly, feel.'-James Brown, author of Anzac's Long Shadow

An honest, well told memoir By Sherro58 The author deals in a matter of fact manner with his experiences during two tour of Iraq and one in Afghanistan. His straightforward style, devoid of embellishment, gives the reader a very realistic experience of the challenges of the asymmetric nature of these campaigns. With disarming modesty he describes coping with serious wounds, volunteering to go to Iraq a second time and then his quite different, and one senses, cathartic role in Afghanistan.I read this in one sitting - an absorbing tale and highly recommended.

To those who loved him, like Teddy Roosevelt, he was "Nicholas Miraculous," the fabled educator who had a hand in everything; to those who did not, like Upton Sinclair, he was "the intellectual leader of the American plutocracy," a champion of "false and cruel ideals." Ezra Pound branded him "one of the more loathsome figures" of the age. Whether celebrated or despised, Nicholas Murray Butler (1862–1947) was undeniably an irresistible force who helped shape American history.

With wit and irony, Michael Rosenthal traces Butler's rise to prominence as president of Columbia University, which he presided over for forty-four years and developed into one of the world's most distinguished institutions of research and teaching. Butler also won the Nobel Peace Prize and headed both the Carnegie Endowment and the American Academy of Arts and Letters, among innumerable other organizations. In 1920, he sought the Republican nomination for president, managing to garner more votes on the first ballot than the eventual winner, Warren Harding. Rosenthal's richly detailed, elegantly crafted narrative captures the mania and genius that propelled Butler to these extraordinary achievements and more. Thick with social, cultural, and political history, Nicholas Miraculous recreates Butler's prodigious career and the dynamic age that nourished him.

Nicholas Miraculous: The Amazing Career of the Redoubtable Dr. Nicholas Murray Butler, by Michael Rosenthal

From Publishers Weekly Butler (1862–1947), one newspaper commented three years before he received the Nobel Prize (1931), was "the most lavishly decorated member of the human race." Upon his death, the New York Times described him as "one of the best known Americans of his generation the world over." However, many of Butler's projects—such as the College Entrance Examination Board—are as familiar as he is now forgotten. As president of Columbia University from 1902 to 1945, Butler nurtured the school's growth from small college to major research institution. His involvement in Republican politics brought the friendship (and later the enmity) of several presidents, and as president of the Carnegie Endowment for Peace (1925–1945), his international stature grew. Although Rosenthal, a former Columbia dean of students, attends to the personal affairs of this man absorbed by institutions, Butler's life remains one of meetings, memos and minutes. The author uses an abundance of archival and published material judiciously; his style is felicitous, and the tale is enlivened by in-fighting and occasional scandal. Manipulator? Manager? Opportunist? Idealist? Sycophant? Pioneer? Rosenthal's skill in rendering a complex life in an absorbing fashion reveals them all. 16 b&w illus., 13 political cartoons. (Jan.) From Booklist The animating question of this biography is, How does a once-famous civic leader fall into oblivion? Nicholas Butler autocratically ruled Columbia University from 1902 to 1945. No university president today could dispose of institutional affairs in Butler's I-know-best manner. In some ways, he did know best, expanding Columbia from a college into a world-class university with professional graduate schools; sections duly recount Butler's fund-raising and stag-club networking. What extends Rosenthal's biography from institutional to general interest is Butler's life in public affairs, where he was prominent in the Republican Party, seeking its presidential nomination in 1920. He also presided over the Carnegie Endowment, gaining prestige (and the Nobel Peace Prize) for promoting idealistic schemes of peace. Fair to Butler but arch about his unapologetic, unwavering elitism, Rosenthal delivers a profile that is far livelier than its academic ambience would initially suggest. Review

Michael Rosenthal's graceful, insightful narrative gift, which is a considerable one, is his ability to explain, as a cautionary tale, how this supremely self-confident, insufferable, immensely talented man transformed Columbia into an internationally renowned research university, while achieving worldwide adulation and acclaim, only to disappear into historical oblivion a short time after his death.--Eugene M. Tobin"Journal of American History" (01/01/0001)

[A] vividly written and meticulously researched biography.... A must for those concerned with the development of college and university education from its dry days in the nineteenth century to its bristling status today.--Louis Auchincloss "Bookforum "

Beveridge Nicholas Miraculous: the Amazing Career of the Redoubtable Dr. Nicholas Michael Rosenthal's biography of Nicholas Murray Butler was fascinating reading for me because of Butler's position as my father's boss and major influence on the social, political and academic world in which he lived during the 1930's and early 1940's (my formative years). It was a world of clubby collegiality for those on the inside, formal social affairs, conservative politics, anti-Semitism, and class and cultural snobbery. Attitudes towards Franco's Spain, Mussolini's Fascism and Hitler's Nazis ranged from admiration to toleration - at least up to the time of the invasion of Poland in 1939. The issue of Negroes on the faculty or in the student body was so far from Butler's concern or concept of the way things should be that it is not even mentioned in his biography. Faculty members were free to exercise academic freedom so long as they did not publicly challenge any of the basic principles of the world of Butler and his colleagues. Those who did, were dismissed or passed over for promotion. My father often complained about the internal politics he had to deal with at Columbia and I had assumed that this was a problem endemic to all academic institutions, but after reading this book I get the impression that it was worse at Columbia than other places because of the personality and policies of Butler himself who was not a very good administrator.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Miraculous Biography of Shaper of Columbia University By Reinerlaw Professor Rosenthal has done a superb job of evoking the persona of the man who built Columbia, using his 44-year tenure as university president. The author has even succeeded in evoking the reader's sympathies for Butler, a powerful leader who, viewed in today's lights, was an autocratic megalomaniac who missed many opportunities to build an even greater educational institution on Morningside Heights. This biography will be of great interest to anyone who spent time at Columbia (or its sister institutions) during the 20th century -- the years during which Butler's influence was at its zenith. It provides, perhaps for the first time, a background for some of the University's admirable traditions, balanced, wisely, by a few rather embarassing episodes in its history.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Must read for those interested in Columbia or the modern university By Raphael Pope-Sussman Fascinating story of a man who was a giant of his times but is now just a footnote, even at the university he helped build into a giant of an institution.

By the age of 47 most people are looking towards an easier and quieter life; however, Welsh celebrity Lynne Allbutt decided to see if she could run across a country - in her bare feet. Far from being an ultra-runner, or extreme sports enthusiast, it was Lynne's disquieted past that motivated her to undertake the challenge. Barefoot and Before not only chronicles Lynne's training diary, including the highs and lows of preparing for the epic 52 mile run across a country without shoes, but also the unconventional and often chaotic challenges of her personal life. On her galvanising journey she not only learns to mask the fear and hide the heartache experienced in her early life but stumbles, via her own gardening business and affinity with nature, into the world of TV, media and celebrities. Lynne's honesty is refreshing and revealing as she describes dealing with her mother's bipolar disorder, the tragic and agonising loss of loved ones, abusive relationships and her constant pursuit of self-worth and confidence. The vulnerability she felt when exposing her feet unexpectedly and painfully unveiled the subconscious fears of ridicule and rejection which she had carried through her life. Remarkably, by pursuing her barefoot exploration, tangled and torn emotions are slowly recycled into self assurance and acceptance as she realises her goal and her potential. "A remarkable lady and a remarkable challenge. An exciting combination." -Robert Plant "Running the mountainous width of Wales is an impressive undertaking in shoes let alone without. Well done." - Sir Ranulph Fiennes "Having witnessed Lynne walk her talk and admired the most satisfactory results at a time when reconnecting to nature is pertinent, I believe Barefoot and Before to be the outstanding book of the present time." - Howard Marks

Some people would consider it more of a Psychology than a religion. No matter what each person says about it, what's important is its purpose. It was clearly stated in this book What Buddhism is and what Buddhism is not and I find that very helpful most particularly for people who are looking into an option of truly exploring it. The teachings of Buddhism about bliss, kindness, compassion and way of life are very very enlightening. This book is well written and informative. I would recommend it to everyone. This book is a very good guide for you to start experiencing real happiness and appreciation of the present moment. Great book!

I liked the author spoke like a normal guy and not someone lecturing me on how to be a Buddhist that is way beyond my comprehension at this point.

THE CATCHER IN THE RYE ENIGMA unearths the mysteries surrounding the 1951 novel The Catcher in the Rye, by J.D. Salinger – arguably the most controversial book of all time. Nicknamed the 'Bible of teenage angst', the classic novel, which is frequently labeled immoral by different groups, has been banned in various parts of America over the decades. However, the main controversy, and indeed the most common reason for it being banned, was that it either inspired or was associated with some of the most infamous crimes of the 20th Century. These crimes include the murder of John Lennon and the attempted assassination of President Reagan. The allegation directed at Salinger is that he (and/or his publisher) craftily implanted into the book neurolinguistic passages, or coded messages, that act as post-hypnotic suggestions or mind control “triggers”. In turn, these triggers enabled CIA handlers to activate Manchurian Candidates for assassinations. Some conspiracy theorists also believe the novel was part of the CIA’s now mostly-declassified mind control program MK-Ultra, and that while assassins were being brainwashed they were forced to read the book over and over until it was embedded in their minds. But given that Salinger’s critically acclaimed masterpiece was one of the biggest selling books of the 20th Century, are the crimes it was associated with merely happenstance? Today, if a handful of different murderers had a copy of The Da Vinci Code or a Harry Potter book, or were all fixated on a similarly popular book, would it even make the news headlines? Novelists, filmmakers and independent researchers James Morcan & Lance Morcan investigate these theories and counter arguments in THE CATCHER IN THE RYE ENIGMA – the fourth book of The Underground Knowledge Series. This balanced exposé ultimately leaves it up to you, the reader, to decide whether J.D. Salinger's novel is a “Mind Control Triggering Device” or simply a “Coincidental Literary Obsession of Criminals” just as this book’s subtitle suggests. Besides the criminals who targeted Lennon and Reagan, THE CATCHER IN THE RYE ENIGMA also details other deranged individuals who were obsessed with Salinger’s book including stalkers and murderers of leading political figures, film stars and other celebrities. The idea that assassination codes are buried deep in Salinger’s book is one of the oldest conspiracy theories around and has been explored repeatedly over the decades with no smoking gun ever found. In fact, many familiar with Catcher conspiracies may think all the theories have already been proven to be false and there’s no need to drag them up yet again. However, given what the authors have uncovered in their research for THE CATCHER IN THE RYE ENIGMA – especially the unique revelations on the history of mind control, the effectiveness of subliminal messages, the latest scientific studies on the brain, Salinger’s underreported dealings with the Americanized Nazis of Project Paperclip and the recently declassified documents on real-life Manchurian Candidates – they believe some of the theories swirling about the classic novel deserve another look. Note that this title is an extended version of several chapters in The Orphan Conspiracies: 29 Conspiracy Theories from The Orphan Trilogy (Sterling Gate Books, 2014) also by James & Lance Morcan. The Catcher in the Rye Enigma therefore contains a combination of new material as well as some recycled material from The Orphan Conspiracies.

The Catcher in the Rye Enigma: J.D. Salinger's Mind Control Triggering Device or a Coincidental Literary Obsession of Criminals? (The Underground Knowledge Series Book 4), by James Morcan, Lance Morcan

From the Author The 1951 novel The Catcher in the Rye, by J.D. Salinger, is arguably the most controversial book of all time.Nicknamed the 'Bible of teenage angst', the classic novel, which is frequently labeled immoral by different groups, has been banned in various parts of America over the decades. From 1961-1982 it was the most censored book in libraries and high schools across the United States. School principals have branded it communist propaganda and teachers have been fired for assigning it to students. However, the main controversy, and indeed the most common reason for it being banned, was that it either directly inspired or was associated with some of the most infamous crimes of the 20th Century.Presidential assassins and would-be Presidential assassins, stalkers and murderers of film stars and music icons are among the known deranged individuals who were obsessed with Salinger's book - a book which many claim to be an assassination trigger device. The allegation pointed at Salinger is that he craftily implanted into the book coded messages that act as post-hypnotic suggestions or mind control triggers. In turn, these enabled CIA handlers to activate Manchurian Candidates for planned assassinations. Many believe the novel was part of the CIA's extensive mind control program known as MK-Ultra, and that while assassins, or future assassins, were being brainwashed they were forced to read the book over and over until it was embedded in their minds. These ideas and others have been covered in pop culture, especially in the 1997 film Conspiracy Theory, in which Mel Gibson's character carries a copy of Salinger's book with him at all times. The cleverly-written film, which at first appears to be nothing but a lightweight romantic comedy co-starring rom-com queen Julia Roberts, becomes more intense as the story progresses and it's revealed Mel Gibson's character is entwined with the CIA and is a mind control victim of the agency's MK-Ultra program.Season three of the TV series Criminal Minds features an episode called Limelight in which the character of David Rossi, played by Joe Mantegna, mentions having once interviewed serial killer Ted Bundy who told him, "If you wanna stop people from becoming like me, don't burn Catcher in the Rye."An episode of the animated TV series South Park also covers the mind control theory in a humorous way when one of the show's young characters reads the book then picks up a knife and starts saying, "Kill John Lennon, kill John Lennon." The boy is disappointed when his father informs him the former Beatle was assassinated years earlier. But seriously, can The Catcher in the Rye really wake MK-Ultra sleeper assassins from their slumber? That's up to you, the reader, to decide by the end of this book.It must be noted the idea that assassination codes are buried deep in Salinger's book is one of the oldest conspiracy theories around and has often been explored over the decades. In fact, many readers familiar with Catcher conspiracies may think all the theories have already been proven to be false and there's no need to drag them up yet again. However, given what we've unearthed in our research for this book and indeed the entirety of The Underground Knowledge Series - especially the unique revelations on the history of mind control, the effectiveness of subliminal messages, the latest scientific studies on the brain, the Americanized Nazis in Project Paperclip and the recently declassified documents on real-life Manchurian Candidates - we believe some of the theories swirling about Salinger's classic deserve another look.   James Morcan & Lance Morcan

Just after he’d shot Lennon, he stood there calmly reading the novel. Then you have John W. Hinckley Jr. (who tried to assassinate Ronald Reagan)- a copy of Salinger’s book was found at his hotel room. Not to mention other ‘coincidental’ incidents. Well, seeing as 95% of people seem to have read Catcher in the Rye, you might think it’s a big leap of imagination to see any meaning in speculative connections; but when it’s put in context with such things as Nazi mind control, project MK Ultra and sleeper assassins, the threads begin to tie up a bit more. This book doesn’t just explore ideas like trigger codes for mind controlled assassins being contained within the pages of Catcher, it also looks at broader aspects of mind control use. For anyone new to either the Catcher in the Rye enigmas or to things like Project Paperclip and secret CIA experiments, this is a great book to start off with.Despite the inclusion of broader aspects being much needed, I couldn’t help but feel like there should have been a lot more about the actual Catcher book and J. D. Salinger- don’t get me wrong; there’s some great info about both here- but I just wanted more. I guess I was just hoping for some actual code breaking! –although the authors of this book do manage to quote many passages from The Catcher in the Rye which most certainly gets one thinking in ‘code meaning’, such as:“This is a people shooting hat,” I said. “I shoot people in this hat.”“It's funny. All you have to do is say something nobody understands and they'll dopractically anything you want them to.”

Salinger's Mind Control Triggering Device or a Coincidental Literary Obsession of Criminals? BY James MorcanThis is the fourth installment of the underground knowledge series. It takes a look at the popular book; The catcher in the Rye By J.D. Salinger. The Authors have done extensive research and have found that some of Americas most notorious assassins/killers were found reading/or had read and quoted some passages of the book. They also dig deep and show some possible mind control elements (possibly) in the book (The Catcher in the Rye). They explain this theory and also go a bit into the background of the famous Author (J.D. Salinger).I found this read very thought provoking, interesting and a bit frightening. It did leave me wondering. The theories do seem plausible, I have read before of "mind control" tactics used during WWII. So the questions still remain did the book have a negative affect on some (possibly) mentally unstable men who became assassins?Overall this is a fascinating read, which has left an impression in my mind. It makes me wonder what goes on in society that we just do not hear about on the news etc. I recommend to those who love a great read, with the possibility of mind control/conspiracy theories.

I swear every time I think I get a handle on what Chanda Hahn is going to do next in the story, she proves me wrong. I both loved and hated this book. I cried (don't judge me) and thought I might have to either cut the woman or write her a strongly worded letter, but she pulled through. Great story. Great series. Tons of action without all the bad language, etc. The first book, Unenchanted, was my very first Kindle download (free), and I have been hooked on the series since. If you read it, you won't be sorry. True Love Forever.. or.. for Ever (fans of the series will get that one).

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Loved it By Piper Precious Forever was amazing! Of course I'm sad that the adventure has come to an end but the journey was great this series has made me laugh and cry. I believe that Chanda Hahn is a great author she makes you feel for the characters which reels you into the story and of course she must have a great imagination I wouldn't have thought up anything remotely close to this! The twist about Mina's mom was great I didn't even expect it but I won't spoil it or the shocking revelations about Mina and Charlie's heritage.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. The end By Sarah O'Neal I enjoyed this book and felt it was an appropriate end to the story. It felt a bit rushed at times, but maybe that's just me.
