Leadership is defined in so many ways, but this book puts leadership in perspective by providing a clear and concise review of those characteristics necessary to lead in very difficult times. As a leader, and trainer of leaders, for over 30 years, I find this book to be right on target because not only does it identify the competencies needed to be a strong leader, but can be a powerful training tool to help people excel at what they do. I realize there are no silver bullets in identifying great leadership characteristics, but this book comes as close as any you will find. I will require all my students and seminar participants to get this book. That is how strongly I feel about the content and potential for helping others be better leaders.

By C.D Brown Dr. Quinn has addressed leadership from ALL levels of education, including teacher leaders, superintendents and anyone in between. In a time when leadership is so critical and educational advocacy at ground level is so necessary this book hits the mark. Anyone affiliated with tackling tough educational issues--including student learning and fundamental educational reform must buy, read and share this book.

50 Ways To Retell A Story: Cinderella, by Alan Peat, Julie Peat, Christopher Storey

Review Deputy Headteacher Liz McGowan, from St Francis RC Primary School in Gorton Manchester said of 50 Ways To Retell A Story: Cinderella: We are loving the Cinderella book - so many fab. ideas, all of which are really grounded in a true understanding of how to improve children's writing through highly engaging approaches. It is also great to be able to see further applications of this approach with other stories/books and across the curriculum.A" Sue Roberts, Year 3 and 4 teacher at Red Hill CE Primary School, Worcester planned a half-term's literacy using the ideas in 50 Ways to Retell a Story: Cinderella and tied in an end-of-term school production, ' Cinderella Rockerfella'. She said: The writing opportunities which the children have had with this approach to our performance have been many, memorable and varied. The children have been completely immersed in their work and in particular reluctant writers have been enthused and inspired. At parents evening it was the main topic of conversation with the parents who were overwhelmed by the amount of school they were hearing about at home compared to normal. Your book was the main inspiration for this enterprise. We know the children think Literacy is fun when we have this approach - thank you for all of your ideas!A"

I'll be using some with my class after Christmas. I think they'll favour the short versions, not realising that they are the most difficult. Can't wait to see what they do to Goldilocks or Jack and the Beanstalk.

Bill Boyce always wanted to know why his father, William D. Boyce, refused to discuss his tour of duty on a B-24 Liberator bomber during World War II. The experience had affected every aspect of his father’s life, but an unspoken agreement kept the topic classified: Bill failed to ask, and his father failed to tell. Twenty-five years after his father’s death, Bill found the one man who might tell him what his father would not. Ray Noury had flown with Boyce in late 1943 and saved his life. Would Noury be willing to talk? Able to remember? From Noury, Bill learned that on February 22, 1944, a B-24 nicknamed Miss Fortune had crashed into the Czech countryside after being attacked by Luftwaffe fighters over Germany. Of eleven crewmembers, only Noury came home. Had Boyce not received a devastating wound only weeks earlier, he would have been with them on their fatal mission. That conversation led Bill to stacks of old photographs, records and letters, across the United States, and to the Czech Republic. It also led him to John Torrison, who had spent a decade tracking down facts about the crew and his uncle’s role as the tail gunner. Together, they pieced together the full story of Miss Fortune and her last mission. A mid-life journey guided by an eighty-nine-year-old veteran taught them about war, love, loss, sacrifice, survival, honor and family. And, through the shared stories of the extended family that formed around Miss Fortune’s crew―spouses, children, relatives and grateful Czechs―Bill Boyce finally came to understand his own father.

By Mark Thompson Wayne Nelson was one of the soldiers who died in Miss Fortune's last mission. He is the brother of my uncle and I looked eagerly for some mention of Wayne throughout the book. But as I read through the book, I found much more: a very interesting discovery trip by authors Bill Boyce and John Torrison. Both of them did extensive research, traveled all over the United States and Europe, combed historical records and met some fascinating people. What was most inspiring for me was to read about the Czech people and how they embraced the memory of this important mission and adopted these perished soldiers as their own. They were so grateful to the Americans who were giving their lives, so they could be free of the Germans. The authors were helped by a member of the crew who managed to parachute safely from the plane. This book will be loved by any history lover and especially by those who want to learn more about WW2. These soldiers did not die in vain!

Nelson Bill Boyce and John Torrison have written a beautiful book about a tragic event during WWII. Their research has provided us with an account of a US bomber's crew only one of which survived a German air attack while on a bombing raid over Germany in February, 1944. The lone survivor, Ray Noury, endured falling 15,000 feet out of the doomed bomber, being found by the local Czech citizens, taken by the Germans to be interrogated, brought to several POW concentration camps before being one of the many on the doomed Death March in 1945. Much of the story in the book was taken from Ray's memory and writings he had made shortly after being rescued by the Allied troops as well as later interviews in the few years before his death in 2013.This "small" piece of history is brought to life by the authors Bill and John and I can only thank them for sharing it with me and all of those who read this book. They have also created a website which summarizes much of what happened and also contains photos and videos of Ray and the other crew members: http://missfortuneslastmission.com/

They were courageous enough to publicly bare their own feelings and emotions. I would guess that although it was difficult, doing so was cathartic for them. This is a story that I probably would not have chosen on my own, but I am friends with John Torrison, and I am glad that I read it. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in the topic of World War II, but I would also recommend it to anyone interested in a memoir of family healing and redemption.

Florence, April 5th, 1874.—They told me I should find Italy greatly changed; and in seven-and-twenty years there is room for changes. But to me everything is so perfectly the same that I seem to be living my youth over again; all the forgotten impressions of that enchanting time come back to me. At the moment they were powerful enough; but they afterwards faded away. What in the world became of them? Whatever becomes of such things, in the long intervals of consciousness? Where do they hide themselves away? in what unvisited cupboards and crannies of our being do they preserve themselves? They are like the lines of a letter written in sympathetic ink; hold the letter to the fire for a while and the grateful warmth brings out the invisible words. It is the warmth of this yellow sun of Florence that has been restoring the text of my own young romance; the thing has been lying before me today as a clear, fresh page. There have been moments during the last ten years when I have fell so portentously old, so fagged and finished, that I should have taken as a very bad joke any intimation that this present sense of juvenility was still in store for me. It won’t last, at any rate; so I had better make the best of it. But I confess it surprises me. I have led too serious a life; but that perhaps, after all, preserves one’s youth. At all events, I have travelled too far, I have worked too hard, I have lived in brutal climates and associated with tiresome people. When a man has reached his fifty-second year without being, materially, the worse for wear—when he has fair health, a fair fortune, a tidy conscience and a complete exemption from embarrassing relatives—I suppose he is bound, in delicacy, to write himself happy. But I confess I shirk this obligation. I have not been miserable; I won’t go so far as to say that—or at least as to write it. But happiness—positive happiness—would have been something different. I don’t know that it would have been better, by all measurements—that it would have left me better off at the present time. But it certainly would have made this difference—that I should not have been reduced, in pursuit of pleasant images, to disinter a buried episode of more than a quarter of a century ago. I should have found entertainment more—what shall I call it?—more contemporaneous. I should have had a wife and children, and I should not be in the way of making, as the French say, infidelities to the present. Of course it’s a great gain to have had an escape, not to have committed an act of thumping folly; and I suppose that, whatever serious step one might have taken at twenty-five, after a struggle, and with a violent effort, and however one’s conduct might appear to be justified by events, there would always remain a certain element of regret; a certain sense of loss lurking in the sense of gain; a tendency to wonder, rather wishfully, what might have been. What might have been, in this case, would, without doubt, have been very sad, and what has been has been very cheerful and comfortable; but there are nevertheless two or three questions I might ask myself. Why, for instance, have I never married—why have I never been able to care for any woman as I cared for that one? Ah, why are the mountains blue and why is the sunshine warm? Happiness mitigated by impertinent conjectures—that’s about my ticket.

Though the narrator is an "old soldier" rather than an "old novelist", James is there. You might call this "The Man Who Thought Too Much", as he turns out to be like a hero or two of his who obsess over their mistaken assumptions about the motives of others without ever going to the source to clear things up. Still pining over a long lost love, it takes the example of a younger, perhaps wiser man to teach him the possible "alternative" ending.

A very Australian story of heroism and healing.

In 2004 Garth Callender, a junior cavalry officer, was deployed to Iraq. He quickly found his feet leading convoys of armoured vehicles through the streets of Baghdad and into the desert beyond. But one morning his crew was targeted in a roadside bomb attack. Garth became Australia's first serious casualty in the war.

After recovering from his injuries, Garth returned to Iraq in 2006 as second-in-command of the Australian Army's security detachment in Baghdad. He found a city in the grip of a rising insurgency. His unit had to contend with missile attacks, suicide bombers and the death by misadventure of one of their own, Private Jake Kovco.

Determined to prevent the kinds of bomb attacks that left him scarred, Garth volunteered once more in 2009 - to lead a weapons intelligence team in Afghanistan. He was helicoptered to blast zones in the aftermath of attacks, and worked to identify the insurgent bomb-makers responsible. Revealing, moving, funny and full of drama, Garth Callender's story is one of a kind.

Garth Callender left the regular Australian Army in 2013 after a distinguished seventeen-year career, during which he served in Iraq and Afghanistan and rose to the rank of major. He now works for an Australian technology company that is developing new ways to detect concealed explosives.

Praise for After the Blast:

'Garth Callender, a wounded veteran, tells his story of multiple combat tours with acid intensity. Stark, brutal and honest, After the Blast exposes the ghastly business of modern warfare. It is an uncompromising account that will shock some readers. Callender pulls no punches; his raw emotions, fears, loves, frustrations and anger are unflinchingly recalled. This book provides a rare insight to the harsh realities of Australia's contemporary conflicts.'-Major General John Cantwell, AO, DSC, author of Exit Wounds

'Garth Callender shows you what soldiers really think - and, more importantly, feel.'-James Brown, author of Anzac's Long Shadow

An honest, well told memoir By Sherro58 The author deals in a matter of fact manner with his experiences during two tour of Iraq and one in Afghanistan. His straightforward style, devoid of embellishment, gives the reader a very realistic experience of the challenges of the asymmetric nature of these campaigns. With disarming modesty he describes coping with serious wounds, volunteering to go to Iraq a second time and then his quite different, and one senses, cathartic role in Afghanistan.I read this in one sitting - an absorbing tale and highly recommended.

An insightful and intelligently written book By Raymond Ware A very insightful read, I have enormous respect for these brave humans who are prepared to put their lives in danger to protect the rest of us. Well written and easy for a non-Defence mind to understand.
