Manatees is a brand new subject matter for Justice. He loves Dolphins, and identified right away with the manatee. He colored the pictures and enjoyed learning about this mammal. The sight word activity was nice, but he really enjoyed writing his name in cursive over and over again. The public schools in Mississippi don't teach cursive writing anymore, so we appreciated this activity. Another thing. The book kept his attention from beginning to end. He finished reading, coloring, and the activities in one setting. He put his book in his book bag so he can take it to school to show his teacher. It was important to him because he and JaNiya are the same age.Justice and Shantae

Pulling back the curtain on the magically mysterious world of the Grateful Dead, Diary of a Deadhead tells one woman’s intriguing spiritual adventure following the band. Part memoir, part American history, author Candace D. Carson uses her personal experiences in the turbulent 1960s and ’70s to illustrate the larger story of her generation as they grappled with the scars of the Vietnam War.

Like many others, Carson found salvation in the music of the Grateful Dead. The live performances became her church, a place where she could dance her way to joy, wisdom, and oneness in the uniquely intertwined theater where the audience partnered with the band in bringing the music to life. Amid the wild and colorful world of sound and vibration, everyone was connected and everyone was free—even the musicians chose the unrestricted route of improvisation, allowing imperfection to ground the fantasy in an intoxicating reality.

Candidly captivating, Diary of a Deadhead invites you on a voyage to experience the childlike wonder and joy that music can provoke, as well as the healing it can provide.

Written from the heart and head of a person who has "lived" the music and the message of the Grateful Dead, and who has the skills to put it in print for the rest of us. If you grew up and participated in this era, or followed this Band, you know the world changed in the 1960's... and after reading this book, I know Ms. Carson's relationship with the Dead was much more intense, personal and long lasting than most of us will ever experience with a band and its music. If you are looking for a book describing a Dead show, how the crowds reacted, the dancing, Drums/Space, or music interpretation, this is NOT the book for you! This is a book about how the Grateful Dead, their music, and their lyrics changed, shaped, and bolstered the life of one "Deadhead" and gave her the strength and insight to overcome the challenges and heartaches of life. The book relates how she used the "Life Lessons" she learned to shape how she lives her daily life, and how she still holds the music within her, long after the Grateful Dead concerts have ended.I found the book to be well written, and easy to read. It is full of personal insights, funny moments, sad experiences, triumphs, failures, and descriptions of the "journey" to living a more mindful life through the power of meaningful music. There is NO substitute for experience, and Ms. Carson brings that experience to all of her readers. Read this book...it will re-enforce the idea that "music IS the universal language" and it can change your life!

A letter penned in 1944 uncovers the powerful and heartfelt story of Helen Gregg, the daughter of Irish immigrant parents who grew up in the miseries of Hell’s Kitchen during the Great Depression, and Clarence Raymond Stephenson, a young aspiring B-17 pilot raised in the small, struggling city of Ironton, Ohio. Fate brings them together in New York’s Central Park in 1942. From the moment their eyes first met, they knew their lives would never be the same. This captivating and poignant story of their struggles and romance, his exploits as a highly decorated B-17 pilot during World War II, and the tragedy that tears them apart, will inspire you while tugging at your heart. With sensitivity and grace, Ray O’Conor reveals a secret about the dashing and brave young aviator who stole Helen’s heart, and he divulges a promise that Helen made to Raymond in the summer of 1942 that she had to keep, no matter how long or how hard it might be to fulfill. Theirs is a compelling story of two ordinary people who led extraordinary lives during the most tumultuous period in history.

A story anyone can relate to who has suffered a loss but survived and thrived (or is trying to) By Julie "I wondered if everyone lives two lives...the one you really live and the one you let other people see." This is the poignant story of young love that was frozen in time and continued eternally for a woman who finally breaks down in her 80s and tells her son who he is named for - her first husband, killed in WWII. This is a timeless story of how complicated lives become for decades from bonds made as a teen. Raymond Stephenson was a Boy Scout that proudly acknowledged in high school that he aspired to be as good a man as his father, and his life was cut short when his plane went down. His name sake, the author, carefully honors his own father, his mother and many family members and service members in the telling of this story. It is a universal story in many ways, and probably there were many similar situations for young women who found themselves widowed in the 1940s. It takes us back to a simpler time and a peak, for a generation who are attached to each other across the world through social media, about how life worked when mail and telegrams brought you news of deaths rather than posts on Facebook.

"She Called Him Raymond" is one of the best novels I read in a long while By Amazon Customer "She Called Him Raymond" is one of the best novels I read in a long while. This is very well written, very well researched and very heart-felt. This novel has the right story line to be made into a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie. Author, Ray O'Conor reveals a heartwarming true story of a secret love that his mother, Helen Gregg revealed to him on her eightieth birthday which marked the anniversary of the death of her first husband, Clarence Raymond Stephenson, a B-17 pilot who died as his plane crashed during a mission during WW2.Author Ray O'Conor after countless hours of investigating his mother's story, not only describes the trials and tribulations she endured, but also takes us with him on a journey revealing the incredible, emotional endurance that only love can conquer. In Mr. O'Conor's Acknowledgement page at the end of the book, he writes, "Finally, thank you, Mom, for entrusting this story to me. I hope I didn't let you down. I miss you and love you."My final words are this, "Thank You Mr. O'Conor for sharing your beautiful story. I had the pleasure of meeting your mom on a few occasions years ago and can tell you for certain that you did not let her down. She misses and loves you too and will always be with you forever in your heart, mind and very soul!"George C. Pizzo/Author of Riley

By Heidi Carr I may be a little prejudiced because this story is about my uncle but I give it 5 stars for the depth of Ray O'Conor's research and for bringing to life the people that I'd just known as "Uncle Raymond, who was killed in WWII", and Helen, the girl he met in NYC.

Her portrayal, in No Return Home, is accurate. I handled her collection of diplomas, passports, photos, civil and legal documents which she gathered and protected during this brutal war. How did this couple survive the horrors of war and yet remain so positive, so grounded? Read the book! Hats off to Victor Moss for immortalizing his parents’ story of ingenuity, unimaginable stress, unforeseeable turns of good fortune and great love.

A young family survives separation, a prisoner of war camp, and the trials and tribulations of World War II before immigrating to America. Always thankful for whatever they had and positive about their future, their love and devotion remained constant as they endured adversity and uncertainty in a very difficult time. More than a touching story, No Return Home is based upon the lives of two very real people with honest values and the love of family and each other. An inspiring look into a family's immigration and contribution to America; a glimpse into history that is a must read.

Beware the Wolves was a dramatic book and this new book by Victor Moss is very touching. It deals with the trials after being released from the POW camp and the fears and trials of a family. The joy of the end of World War II and the fear of being deported back to Russia with a young family are two conflicting emotions. A most enjoyable book to read.

By A Customer very touching story from a mothers point of view. how God turned things around and brought a light into the life of a shattered family.a family questioning him, his goodness and his mercy. One can't even begin to imagen what this mother went through. you truly see the authors world through her words, from troubled teens to rosie new babies and finally to empty hotel rooms, depressing hospitals and into Gods glory! I also recommend a later work by the author "A CRY FOR JUSTICE" (out of print) How the Lord lead her to do something few of us can imagen (if i told you i would ruin it)

13 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Full of blatant lies and distortions By S. Williams Stephanie Swift was my best friend for several years during our early teen years. She was a bit of a wild child (and I hadn't caught up with her yet) so her mom used to ask me watch Steve and Greg sometimes, because Stephanie frequently refused to. Stephanie had a huge amount of anger over her parent's divorce (which was the result of her father impregnating their underaged babysitter). He was a police officer (Roeland Park, KS) at the time and quietly "resigned" from his position rather than face the possible repercussions of his actions. The babysitter's (Joy's) family then apparently consented to her marriage to him. He then moved south in MO to build docks in the Ozarks? I'm not quite sure about that. This babysitter, now "author", has taken such liberties with this family's history that I find it horribly offensive. Stephanie harbored bitter resentment towards her father and his wife. Greg and Steve only lived with them a short period of time, and that was after Stephanie became ill. The author doesn't even get Stephanie's diagnosis or cause of death correct. I was just sickened while reading this twisted account. The author would have you believe that this was one happy blended family when nothing could be further from the truth. She never gives credit to Jean (the bio mom) of three of the children lost to tragedy. I don't doubt the sincerity behind Ms. Swift's attempt to convey the grief and horror behind the senseless murders of four of these children. I resent her playing loosely with the facts that were the three original Swift children's fractured and often very difficult life stories. George rarely visited these children once he married his teenaged bride, nor did he support them financially the way that he was supposed to. They may have "found God" now, but there was nothing remotely resembling Christian virtue in who they were then. I just wish the author had told the truth. She doesn't have the right to alter another's legacy. The last time that I saw Stephanie, she was 15 and running away from home. She stopped by to see if I wanted to go with her. She was with her boyfriend and hitch hiking to Colorado (from Lenexa, KS). I opted to stay put and didn't get to speak with her again until after she had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. She was in the hospital and her mother was there with her. Not her father, not his wife. This book could almost be fiction. That having been said, I have compassion and sympathy for Jean, George and Joy. Their losses have been heartbreaking and no parent should have to endure that.
