A Place in the Country is W. G. Sebald’s meditation on the six artists and writers who shaped his creative mind—and the last of this great writer’s major works to be translated into English.  This edition includes more than 40 pieces of art, all originally selected by W. G. Sebald. This extraordinary collection of interlinked essays about place, memory, and creativity captures the inner worlds of five authors and one painter. In his masterly and mysterious style—part critical essay, part memoir—Sebald weaves their lives and art with his own migrations and rise in the literary world.   Here are people gifted with talent and courage yet in some cases cursed by fragile and unstable natures, working in countries inhospitable or even hostile to them. Jean-Jacques Rousseau is conjured on the verge of physical and mental exhaustion, hiding from his detractors on the island of St. Pierre, where two centuries later Sebald took rooms adjacent to his. Eighteenth-century author Johann Peter Hebel is remembered for his exquisite and delicate nature writing, expressing the eternal balance of both the outside world and human emotions. Writer Gottfried Keller, best known for his 1850 novel Green Henry, is praised for his prescient insights into a Germany where “the gap between self-interest and the common good was growing ever wider.”   Sebald compassionately re-creates the ordeals of Eduard Mörike, the nineteenth-century German poet beset by mood swings, depression, and fainting spells in an increasingly shallow society, and Robert Walser, the institutionalized author whose nearly indecipherable scrawls seemed an attempt to “duck down below the level of language and obliterate himself” (and whose physical appearance and year of death mirrored those of Sebald’s grandfather). Finally, Sebald spies a cognizance of death’s inevitability in painter Jan Peter Tripp’s lovingly exact reproductions of life.   Featuring the same kinds of suggestive and unexplained illustrations that appear in his masterworks Austerlitz and The Rings of Saturn, and translated by Sebald’s colleague Jo Catling, A Place in the Country is Sebald’s unforgettable self-portrait as seen through the experiences of others, a glimpse of his own ghosts alongside those of the men who influenced him. It is an essential addition to his stunning body of work.Praise for A Place in the Country  “Measured, solemn, sardonic . . . hypnotic . . . [W. G. Sebald’s] books, which he made out of classics, remain classics for now.”—Joshua Cohen, The New York Times Book Review“In Sebald’s writing, everything is connected, everything webbed together by the unseen threads of history, or chance, or fate, or death. The scholarly craft of gathering scattered sources and weaving them into a coherent whole is transformed here into something beautiful and unsettling, elevated into an art of the uncanny—an art that was, in the end, Sebald’s strange and inscrutable gift.”—Slate  “Magnificent . . . The multiple layers surrounding each essay are seamless to the point of imperceptibility.”—New York Daily News   “Sebald’s most tender and jovial book.”—The Nation“Reading [A Place in the Country is] like going for a walk with a beautifully talented, deeply passionate novelist from Mars.”—New York

A Place in the Country (Modern Library Paperbacks), by W.G. Sebald

From Booklist Few writers have traveled as quickly from obscurity to the sort of renown that yields an adjective as quickly as German writer W. G. Sebald (1944–2001), and now Sebaldian is as evocative as Kafkaesque. Sebald is that rare being: an inimitable stylist who creates extraordinary sentences that, like crystals, simultaneously refract and magnify meaning. This posthumous collection, a boon to Sebald admirers, is a series of tributes to writers and artists Sebald admired and felt affinity with. Though these pieces resemble literary criticism, they are a species of homage: reverential but without hyperbole. Except for Rousseau, few of Sebald’s subjects are well known, but readers will feel enlightened and will newly appreciate the depths of respect writers have for their peers, even if those peers lived two centuries ago. All of Sebald’s subjects had uneasy relations with their times and with themselves: “Exile, as Gottfried Keller describes it, is a form of purgatory located just outside the world.” One does not have to leave home to feel bereft, and Sebald was the great contemporary master of this liminal territory. --Michael Autrey

It is a pleasure to read again in 2014, so lucid and temperate a voice as the late author’s on ideas and elements of humanity so familiar—and thus so difficult to describe freshly—as dislocation, literary memory, and the unpaid dividends thereof.”—The Brooklyn Rail“A Place in the Country’s publication in English is something to celebrate.”—W. S. Merwin   “Out of exquisitely attuned feeling for the past, Sebald fashioned an entirely new form of literature. I’ve read his books countless times trying to understand how he did it. In the end, I can only say that he practiced a kind of magic born out of almost supernatural sensitivity. A Place in the Country extends the too-short time we were given in his company.”—Nicole Krauss  “Few writers have traveled as quickly from obscurity to the sort of renown that yields an adjective as quickly as German writer W. Sporadically Powerful, But Falls Short of His Novels By Hunter Sharpless Sebald is one of the most compelling writers of the last fifty years, and as Susan Sontag remarked, his novels achieve something that is increasingly rare: originality. "The Rings of Saturn," "Austerlitz," "Vertigo," and "The Emigrants" all swept me up in beautiful, haunting, horrifying dream-sequences. I think I'll reread one of his novels yearly or bi-yearly until the day I die. They evade description, which is why I'm falling short here. The essays do not achieve the same feat. "A Place in the Country" is composed of six essays, each a sort of profile of a different artist Sebald admires. Three of the essays I enjoyed very much, the ones on Tripp, Walser, and especially the essay on Rousseau. In these three it seems that Sebald approaches the best of abilities as written into his novels, yet the other three for me seemed less compelling and more reliant on synopsis and criticism, rather than the dissolution of narrator, subject, and history he's so darn good at.Part of my disliking of the "other" three essays, as I have called them, is probably due to the dearth of German history in my education and reading. So if you know quite a bit on that subject, maybe you'll find them more interesting.Alas, Sebald remains Sebald: Each essay brings surprise, each brings pleasure, each brings fear. For those who haven't read Sebald yet, I'd point you to his novels. But for those who read and enjoyed his novels, this collection of essays, while it fails to match the quality of his fiction, nonetheless is worth reading.

As all reviewers note, his mixture of memory and history, his own and others, is strange and moving and alluring. And, the photographs deepen and isolate the particular tales.

Excellent collection By Steiner As one of the most extraordinary of European writers to have emerged in the last thirty years, I try not to miss any text by Sebald. This is a posthumously organized collection of essays and speeches gives us a wonderful perspective on Sebald’s immense gifts as a literary critic and scholar. Here one finds beautifully expansive, exploratory essays about Johann Peter Hebel, Rousseau, Gottfried Keller, Eduard Mörike, Robert Walser—together constituting a beautiful constellation of Romantic poetry and literary experimentation. Just as was true of his own fiction, Sebald was a writer invested in the space as the zone of naturalism and memory. One finds in his brief explorations of these writers moments of style and method which would inform his own novels. The editors have also done a great job of providing paintings and drawings from noted settings and places—Max would doubtless have been happy with the volume in its present form.

This action-filled autobiography by former test pilot and decorated Vietnam veteran Mick Greene, with introduction by retired General Ron Fogleman, 15th Chief of Staff of the USAF, is a must read for military aviation historians and aviation enthusiasts worldwide. Greene knew at an early age what he wanted to be —-a fighter pilot. But as the youngest of a family struggling to get along, his options were limited. Still, he persisted and managed to get an appointment to the Naval Academy. It was a start. But when he learned that upon graduation from the Academy, he could transfer into the Air Force and directly into pilot training, he knew this was what he wanted to do. Years passed, as Greene honed his flying skills in fighter squadrons and later as a test pilot. Then came the ultimate challenge. A combat tour in Vietnam as a "Misty FAC", a then classified, extremely dangerous mission, directing airstrikes against targets along the Ho Chi Minh trail in North Vietnam and Laos. All pilots were volunteers and the losses were high. In his simple, plain spoken way, author Mick Greene describes how he survived in the flak filled skies over North Vietnam.

Author Mick Greene Reveals His Secret for Being an Old Bold Pilot: Skill, Courage, and Luck By Ron Standerfer "There are old pilots and bold pilots, but there are no old, bold pilots," E. Hamilton Lee -- 1949. Most pilots agree that this is good advice---especially those engaged in the more dangerous activities like fighter pilots and test pilots. But Mick Greene was not like most pilots. Far from it. In his new autography, he reveals the secret of how he survived to be both old and bold. His secret? Skill, courage, and luck. After reading his compact, well written, to-the-point book, readers will conclude that he had numerous opportunities to be bold, but not too many to grow old. A notable example occurred in Vietnam when he joined a special unit of high speed forward air controllers, call sign “Misty”, to coordinate our effort to choke off the flow of supply trucks along the Ho Chi Minh trail from North Vietnam to Viet Cong positions in the South. All pilots were volunteers and losses were exceptionally high. Doesn't sound like much of an opportunity to grow old, does it?A particularly informative and touching part of the book describes the author and five other Misty's return to Vietnam as tourists some thirty two years later. He was surprised by the friendliness and lack of rancor with which they were greeted. He also expresses optimism about Vietnam's future, especially in a capitalistic society. ("letting the tiger out of the cage" as he put it.)How to sum it all up? General Ron Fogelman USAF Ret., 15th Chief of Staff, USAF and a former Misty, read the book and said this about Greene's Misty performance: " For some, the experience was a once in a lifetime event...for others, like Mick, it was a special tour of duty in a lifetime of assignments and experiences that demanded extraordinary skills combined with a boldness seldom seen and little understood by most of the society he defended throughout his life. He is living proof that there really are "Old Bold Pilots"...and his story is worth the read."I couldn't put it better.

Interesting Career By Tdaero This is a well written book detailing the author's very interesting and enviable flying career.I had read Don Shepperd's book on "Misty", "Bury Us Upside Down", and had hoped for more mission oriented information and detail from Mick Greene's prospective, of his flying with the "Misty " group. I was disappointed that he didn't share more mission to mission details of his tour with "Misty", but instead chose to defer to Don Shepperd's book.

From the Author My main focus when writing Gym Heat was to really push for the characters to get to know each other and decide for theirself whether what they had was worth fighting for or if gossip was enough to destroy them. The characters assume things about the other when all they really have to do is just ask the other. Building trust is one of the first steps in any relationship and that's what these characters are forced to learn. Plus, the amazing sex and interesting locations of each experience is a wonderful bonus to the story.

A-Z Great Modern Artists (A-Z Great Modern Series), by Andy Tuoh

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—This compact introduction to modern art covers 52 different figures, chosen for their "profound and lasting impact on the world." The entries are arranged alphabetically, with at least one artist for each letter. Accompanied by graphic-style portraits that simplify each artists' technique into its core stylistic elements, each profile includes a brief biography, reproductions of famous works, and "Where to See [Artist's] Work" and "Did You Know?" sidebars. Interestingly, Tuohy, who created all these portraits, is considered the book's author (he selected all the individuals and penned the preface). However, art historian Masters's encyclopedic articles are just as relevant as the images. He provides fascinating and thorough details, for instance, walking readers through the many artistic movements to which Piet Mondrian contributed. There are also mentions of the artists' personal lives, such as Jackson Pollock's alcoholism and Yayoi Kusama's "orgy parties." VERDICT A useful, portable guide.—Jessica Cline, New York Public Library

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A view of modern artists, through the eyes of another artist By Editchief "Great Modern Artists A to Z" is an original contribution to the genre I'll describe as "quick guides to complex topics." In this case, the complex topic is fine art (primarily painting and sculpture) of the 20th and 21st centuries. Andy Tuohy, a prolific British illustrator, partnered with British art historian Christopher Masters to showcase 52 luminaries of modern art (8 of them still living), including many familiar names (like Picasso, Warhol, O'Keeffe, Dali, and Kahlo) along with some lesser-known contributors. Tuohy points out in his Preface that a few members of his select group are non-Western artists (from Japan, China, India, Lebanon, and Sudan) that he hopes "people will investigate further."Each artist receives 3 or 4 pages in this small (about 6 by 9 inches) volume, including a brief biographical essay that describes the artist's style and significant contributions. At least one of the artist's works is reproduced in full color, and for a few artists, two sample works are included. The first page of each artist's entry identifies his or her country of origin, and year of birth and-- when applicable-- death. A 2-page glossary at the back of the book defines names of several art movements and organizations. The initial page for every entry also contains two small boxes: one is titled "Where to See [Artist's] Work" and contains a list of museums and galleries, worldwide, that house this artist's work. The other box, titled "Did You Know?", contains a "factoid" related to the artist's life or work. (Examples: Louise Bourgeois supported gay and transgender rights; Salvador Dali was named after a brother who died a year before he was born; David Hockney has produced the largest paintings ever made in open air; Mark Rothko studied at Yale but didn't graduate, and later received an honorary doctorate from the school.)But the focal point (and the primary reason for this book) is displayed on the second page of each entry-- a color portrait of the artist, created by Tuohy, using a uniform, minimalist illustration approach that also incorporates some attributes of each artist's "signature" style. Sometimes the inspiration for Tuohy's portrait is obvious-- for instance, Jackson Pollock's head is a paint can, and he wears a shirt splattered in colors that resemble Pollock's "Number 1, 1950 (Lavender Mist)", which is reproduced on the page following Tuohy's portrait. Similarly, Piet Mondrian's portrait is made of white squares and rectangles outlined in black, with a few blocks of primary colors used to create eyes, ears, and clothing, thus closely resembling the well-known Mondrian "Composition with Red, Blue and Yellow" that appears on the next page.In some cases, however, simply comparing pictures isn't enough, because the Tuohy portrait displays identifying elements that will be clear only if the reader already knows the artist's work, or reads the accompanying essay carefully. One such example is German Surrealist Max Ernst, portrayed by Tuohy as a two-headed half-man, half-bird. No birds appear in the Ernst painting "Celebes" reproduced in the book, but a paragraph of the text discusses Ernst's frequent use of a "bird-like alter ego" and "sinister avian creatures" in many of his paintings and collages done in the 1930s.Tuohy's interpretations are fun for those already familiar with the artists (he says he started the series of illustrations "for no better reason than to amuse myself"), and in many ways the book achieves its goal of providing "an accessible introduction [to modern art] for a new generation."Nevertheless, I assigned 4 stars rather than 5, because of two shortcomings. One is that the short essays frequently refer to works not contained in this book. I'm guessing that Tuohy's and Masters' intent is to stimulate readers to seek more information elsewhere, or at least to power up their computers and look for online images of the works mentioned-but-not-displayed. However, beginners can't fully appreciate some of the insights offered in the text unless they take time to do this extra research. (A related nit-pick is that titles of all art works mentioned are included in the index-- which isn't helpful if you simply want to locate the art that is included in this book.)The other weakness is lack of a bibliography for readers who want to learn more about an artist, can't necessarily visit one of the listed museums, and want a pointer to an authoritative information source. Even providing just one "For more information" reference with each entry would, in my view, help the book better achieve its goal of "celebrating" the art and artists of the modern era.Still, this book is admirably designed, and inexpensive-- so as a quick guide to modern art, it's worth considering.

Emma's struggle is emotionally overwhelming. She has accepted her true feelings but struggles with letting go to be able to move forward. Markus guides Emma in exploring her darkest desires. He has given her freedom from herself. Markus is a dominate who wants to protect Emma however he also appears obsessed with her. I can't wait for the final book. Emma has to make a decision and either way there will be pain and heartache. Ava Bell does an excellent job drawing you into the story, I am completely engrossed.

She married young and had children and like most housewives, she puts herself on hold and does everything for her children. Including losing herself in the process. Emma discovers that she wants to become an author and starts researching into the BDSM lifestyle for the book. Feeling disconnected from her husband, what started out as research for the book became so much more for her.Markus meets Emma through Fetlife, an online BDSM social networking site. After seeing Emma’s profile, Markus messages her and strikes up a friendship with her. Markus and Emma meet and the chemistry between them sparks.Markus tries to convince Emma that he is the man for her and can give her what she really needs. Emma must decide what she really wants however she is torn between what she wants and tearing her family apart. Daniel, Emma’s husband, worries about her as she is changing and not acting like her usual self. He tries to show her affection but Emma pushes him away. One night Daniel sees the texts between Emma and Markus and knows that his gut intuition was right – Emma has been cheating on him. Will Emma choose Markus or Daniel – submission or family? The premise of the story has some uniqueness to it and the writing was good. You could feel a sense of connection with the characters and their emotions. It was easy to feel the pull that Emma faced between wanting to find herself or stay with her family and be miserable. You got a good sense of the progression in their relationship and could feel the sexual tension between them. Overall though, the book was well written and kept you wanting to know what would happen next.

Ava Bell Awakens My Love Again By Cassie Schlenk The Tabu Series continues to steam up as Emma and Markus less weave, more duck and dodge, through their relationship. Add the extra heat to it and you have got yourself one hot and naughty couple. Perfect for the BDSM world. But like last time, this book is so much more than whips and chains. As their love is simmering, Daniel is getting wary. Very wary. Will their charade continue or will Emma’s guilt take over?Emma seems to just blossom as she witnesses the scenes with Markus. It is amazing to see all of it through her eyes. As if we were also there, seeing it for the first time. I never once felt like I wasn’t getting an authentic and real depiction of what it would be like to dive into the BDSM world.Markus. Still my favorite DOM of all time. He stays true to himself with his focus on caring rather than punishment. He would be any newbies dream come true. A soft way to come into the world that is BDSM. The love he shows for Emma is unmatched. I guess that is the perk of truly knowing a person’s inner desires. But like all secrets, this one has a chance at coming out. Will Daniel be curious enough to inquire? What about the marks that could ensue? Will these webs of lies build upon and be ready to snag in the third book? I guess you will just have to awaken yourself and read.

*****Get Your FREE BONUSES When You Download This Book!*****On the 11th of July, 1970, a man was out fishing on the banks of the Yellowstone River in Montana, expecting perhaps to enjoy the three o’clock afternoon breeze and a good catch of fish to take home. What he certainly did not expect to snag was a human body, decapitated and missing its head. The head was missing; the arms had been cut off at the shoulders and there were no legs, for they had been hacked off at the knees. All that remained was a stump of flesh, enough to identify that the person had been a male, and nothing else. In over two thousand years of counted civilization, man has progressed by leaps and bounds. We have turned the entire world into a global village, destroyed any sense of distance with our telecommunications and we have even left the earth to journey to other planets. Man has left his mark on the Solar System – we started with the moon, and we are now working our way onto Pluto and even beyond that. And yet, for all our achievements and advancements, for all the great feats we have accomplished and the wonders we have erected, mankind remains, in the end, its own greatest enemy.

The spelling is not bad, but the grammar is terrible and some of it just doesn't make sense." He showed little remorse for his actions and did seem to repent the fact that he had murdered a man in cold blood and then eaten his heart as if he was no more than an animal."If he showed little remorse, why would he repent his actions.I read books as entertainment, and sometimes to learn about things. All this book taught me was to avoid this author.I don't recommend the book.

By Darla Rossetta Goosebumps everywhere as I was reading this documentation. I am in awe that these massacres and killings were not discovered right away. Some of them actually are still unsolved mysteries. I would recommend this to detectives and police officers who wanted to learn more about massacres and leads for investigation. Circumstances that these people experienced are very helpful.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Five stars By Claudia R. You only have to change a few letters in the title to understand what this is about. Stepdad, barely legal brat, stuck in close quarters for the night. You can see where this is going. Very hot, I loved everything about this!

Great title and story By Amazon Customer I have to admit, I thought the title was a little cheesy but fun, positive stories are the hallmarks of Cheri Verset. And she sure delivered with this book. It's hilarious and hot at the same time. Stepdaughter Tamara is a firecracker and she wasn't the only one having fun in this story. Recommended
