Born in 1933, Kenneth Vernon Crane grew up on a farm in New Jersey sharing one bathroom with eight siblings. He learned early in life to be self-reliant, and he took to heart his pop’s platitudes that featured plainspoken advice such as “Plan your work, then work your plan,” and “There are no problems in life, only challenges.”

When working out his plan to serve in the military in order to gain a college education under the GI Bill and make a life with his high school sweetheart, he could only imagine where his cocky attitude and enthusiasm for embracing challenges would take him. He went on to become a public accountant and a tax expert licensed by the IRS, building a clientele of distinguished lawyers, doctors, and CEOs, along with dairy farmers and regular folks. Against all odds this man-wife team ended up multimillionaires.

In Memoirs, Crane looks back at his extraordinary life with candor and characteristic humor, providing an amalgamation of personal philosophies and practical advice culled from a long life well lived. His fascinating story shows how enthusiasm, ingenuity, and the willingness to turn each “Ken-undrum” into a challenge can bring happiness along with success in life.

“It is a bad omen to turn your back at this juncture,” Urmilla Khanna's grandmother tells her at the cusp of her wedding ceremony. “You must only look forward.”

With these words Khanna begins her journey as she breaks barriers and crosses boundaries to fulfill her lifelong dream of practicing medicine in America. Born in a land of arranged marriages and strict societal expectations, she agrees to marry a Punjabi research scientist who is studying in America, only to discover that no women in his family had worked outside their homes.

In America she has to face barriers and cross boundaries again. She has to switch from saris to skirts, give up her beautiful long hair, but she never gives up what is important to her-ghargrahasthi-being a mother, wife and house holder and, of course, her love for pediatrics. It can all be done with determination, patience, and perseverance, she says. When all else fails, she banks on karma.

In her memoir, Boundaries of the Wind, you read about Khanna's elaborate wedding arranged by her parents, the life of a housewife in Chandigarh, India, monkeydance performances, and a lot more.

Boundaries of the Wind is a beautiful and insightful account of a young woman's journey By Amazon Customer Boundaries of the Wind is a beautiful and insightful account of a young woman's journey. I enjoyed the author's tender writing style and the compassionate and wise way she handles her many challenging situations. The book is full of family and life, not to mention a beautiful picture of India's tastes, colors and descriptions. A terrific memoir.

By Anna I found this book to be an eloquently written tale of the trials a young Indian girl faced when coming to America. I enjoyed reading this book and i hope the author writes another about her childhood.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An inspiring and enjoyable life story By C. Sprankle In this book, Urmilla Khanna recounts her life from when she got her medical degree in India in 1961 to when she completed her U.S. residency in pediatrics in 1974. During that time, she got married, lived in two very different cities in India and two American college towns, had two children (one in America and one in India), spent time as a stay-at-home mom in both countries, held several jobs, and earned a master's degree in clinical pharmacology. Khanna begins her book by asking the reader rhetorically whether the world really needs another immigrant's memoir. She then proceeds to tell a rich tale that is a worthy addition to the canon. In direct language and relying heavily on recounts of conversations she had with friends and family during that time, she helps the reader learn more both about Indian history and culture and about the challenges faced by women in both cultures during that time period. Khanna can consider herself a role model for both Indian and American women, and she's written an enjoyable and inspiring book.

By Megan Snowden Let me start by saying that once I picked up this book, the only time I put it down was to go to sleep. The story that Mark tells is beyond suspenseful, terrifying, and brutally honest. It truly gives an accurate description into an addicts life and the grip that drugs have on a person. My heart pounded as I turned the pages, I often felt like I was in the car with them living this nightmare. Ride or die is a book that I will most definitely be recommending to my friends and family. If you are struggling to understand the mind of an addict, I truly think this book can help navigate what life is truly like for them and the daily demons they fight. This book is raw, be prepared for some graphic realities of an addicts life and the tragedy that consumes them. Amazing story of relentless hope and survival.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Like being in a 2 week long episode of Breaking Bad. I couldn't put it down. By Justin Goody One of the hardest things to do when trying to get a message across to an addict is to speak in a language they understand. This book seems to transcend conventional storytelling and speak straight to the addict. From the early pages the reader is put, quite literally, in the drivers seat. I have never read a book where I was so clearly convinced that I was a part of the story, and was so anxious to see what would happen next. The characters were so real I felt like all of my senses were stimulated every time I sat down to read a few more days of the story. I could practically hear the sounds of the street and smell the desperation. It will speak to you through the eyes of an addict, in a way that anyone can understand, but no one will be expecting. All throughout the story I found encouraging words of wisdom and hope that never come off as pushy, but rather show that there is another way, and an easier way to live. This story definitely took me down an exciting and enlightening path I wasn't expecting. I will absolutely recommend it to anyone who struggles with addiction, whether the addiction belongs to them or just someone they care about.

He has you feeling the painful symptoms of withdrawal from heroin By mark l wilder Mark’s book takes you on his chilling Road trip through hell with a killer by his side. Mark’s writing style is explicitly descriptive leading you with his words in such a way that you are feeling every emotion he is going through. He has you feeling the painful symptoms of withdrawal from heroin, feeling the throbbing pain in his infected leg, crying from the frustration of how to get out of his seemingly insurmountable and trapped situation. Mark will also have you smiling in spite of yourself with his sense of humor that comes out when you least expect it.As Mark’s mother, I can tell you that Mark has turned his life around and is now welcomed back into the loving arms of his family. His life is now an inspiration through the sharing of his story so that others can overcome the steel grips of addiction. “As long as there is breath there is hope!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Another great hot sexy bear shifter By J. L. Johnston Mason is the next generation of the Grizzly MC. He's lived each day as if it's his last. His only thought has been of himself until he's almost killed in a bad setup. His life was almost destroyed and this gave him the wake up call he needed. As he's making his long road to recovery his main focus is making the ones who hurt him pay but Ryeissa may put a kink in that plan. His bear wants the sexy curvy nurse whose been supporting Mason on his road to recovery. Once he's healed will Madon give into his bear and make Ryeissa his mate or will he push her away for protection. Ryeissa is a innocent woman who has never been exposed to the gritty life that Mason has as a patched member of the Grizzly MC. Jenika Snow writes sexy hot strong alphas who fall for the quirky innocent curvy girl. If only this happened in the real world. Jenika does a great job of making it seem possible for the curvy quirky lonely girl to find her over the top hot alpha mate. Plenty of hot panty melting scenes and just enough action to keep you on the edge of your seat. I love all the Grizzly MC books and this one is another great read

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. My favorite Grizzly shifter book out of the whole series By Linda W This has to be my favorite Grizzly's book! I really loved Mason's story and how he fought so hard to win the woman he loved.Mason knew he wasn't boyfriend material, but he knew Ryeissa was the kind of girl that needed certain things. Soft things that he couldn't give her. While Mason is recovering from a near death attempt on his life he lusts after his nurse in the hospital. Ryeissa had no problem taking care of the massive bear shifter. In fact, the pleasure is all hers. They danced around their attraction until Mason was discharged, then they went their separate ways. Ryeissa thought that was the end of everything because she was too nervous to tell Mason how she felt. But that was only the beginning because Mason's bear wanted her and it would be denied.I LOVED this book! The whole series is a great mix of bikers and shifters. Brilliantly written by Jenika Snow & Sam Crescent.A work of art!

He was so full of both sorrow and anger after he was run down and nearly killed. His world began to be a swirl or regret, rage and fear of the unknown. Would ha ever walk again? Will he be the man he was once again?Ryeissa...Such a refreshing ray of sunshine to Mason's bleak world. The strong nurse who wouldn't bow down to his anger and attitude. Could she heal the man and beast and make Mason whole again? Can she be his key to happiness and help him be the bigger man?Can a mans love for his woman be stronger than the need for vengeance? This is my confession: Mason & Ryeissa may be my absolute favorite Grizzly couple, if not my favorite all around Jenika Snow couple, period.

It gives the reader an insider's viewpoint of a policeman's day-to-day activities. When the average person is confronted with danger he or she runs away while policemen run toward it. They put their lives in jeopardy every day when they come to work. We owe them a debt of gratitude. I also appreciate the author recognizing the need to thank God for sparing his life on so many occasions. Thank you, Mr. Albright, for this well-written book. I look forward to more books from you.MKOhio

On the 6th of October 1974, a crime of most heinous proportions was committed. It would become one of the most baffling and infamous unsolved crimes in Australian history. Two female trainee nurses, hitchhiking from Brisbane to the inland township of Goondiwindi on the Queensland-New South Wales border, were to disappear forever. Twenty-one months later their skeletal remains would be discovered in the bush at Murphys Creek, situated at the foothills of the Toowoomba ranges. They had both been hogtied, raped and bludgeoned to death. In April 2013 and thirty-nine years after their murders, a six day Coronial Inquest into their deaths had commenced. Over thirty witnesses, including three persons of interest, would be subpoenaed to give evidence. The Inquest would create immense publicity and shine a spotlight upon the dark underbelly of Toowoomba’s past. I am the brother of one of those murdered girls. I have documented my quest to discover the truth of what happened to my sister and her friend in my previous book, The Echo of Silent Screams. This is my ongoing personal story to pursue justice for my sister, Lorraine Wilson and her friend, Wendy Evans. The $250,000 reward is still current.

In That Thing You Do With Your Mouth, actress and voice-over artist Samantha Matthews offers—in the form of an extended monologue, prompted and arranged by New York Times bestselling author (and Matthews’s cousin once removed) David Shields—a vivid investigation of her startling sexual history. From her abuse at the hands of a family member to her present-day life in Barcelona, where she briefly moonlighted as a dubber of Italian pornography into English, Matthews reveals herself to be a darkly funny, deeply contemporary woman with a keen awareness of how her body has been routinely hijacked, and how she has been “formatted” by her early trauma. Her story is a study of her uneasy relationships with female desire, her tormentors, and her lovers—with whom she seeks out both the infliction and receipt of harm. This book is an attempt, sometimes self-thwarted, to break down barriers: sexual and emotional for Matthews, literary for Shields. For them, the only response to the unspeakable is to speak, to do that thing you do with your mouth, as directly and honestly as possible. Their provocative performance refuses neat resolution or emotional pornography; it will have readers, from literary critics to Jezebel commentators, raving, raging, celebrating, talking.

Review One of the Huffington Post's "Moving, Must Read Memoirs" of 2015!"Don't let the provocative title fool you—this book is about busting boundaries, not getting you off. In the form of an extended monologue, actress and voiceover artist Matthews offers a rare, candid glimpse into a contemporary woman's psyche, as shaped by her sexual history. Raw, unnerving, and morbidly funny, Matthews, who's moonlighted as a dubber of Italian pornography into English, recounts her harrowing journey from child abuse victim to determined and headstrong mother. For anyone who's struggled to forge their identity after a trauma, Matthews' book offers a glimmer of hope.”—Jill Krasny, Esquire“An insightful, thought-provoking probe into the impulses of human desire.” —Kirkus Reviews“Actor Samantha Matthews and author David Shields challenge the way we think about trauma by changing the way we talk about it.” —The Rumpus“That Thing You Do With Your Mouth shouldn’t work, but it does. Not only does it work, it excels. . . . You cannot interject. You can only listen. And sometimes, simply listening is the most important thing to do.”—LitReactor“Honest, raw and compulsively readable.”—M. Scott Krause, Vegas Seven"Shields proves a master at this structural tight-rope walk, pulling together disparate bits into a story that is more impressionistic than a typical narrative, yet just as fulfilling."—Joanne Furio, Mary: A Journal of New Writing "A collection of musings on actress Matthews' sexual history, including several incidents of abuse as a child—as told to and arranged by critic Shields (How Literature Saved My Life, 2013, etc.). Originally conceived as a documentary about Matthews' side job as an English dubber of Italian pornography, the project developed into a much more revealing examination of her feelings about desire, sex, and love. Corresponding with Shields, her cousin once removed, Matthews reveals the extent to which the repeated sexual trauma she suffered as a child has affected her life. Matthews refers to her trauma as the experience that "formatted" her; all subsequent experiences have been interpreted or refracted by her abuse. Shields, too, notes in his introduction that the project's focus shifted to whether or not one important question could be answered: "How and to what degree is it possible to get beyond early trauma?" However, the psychological trauma experienced by Matthews as a child was not limited to sexual abuse. She also delves into the complex relationship she has with her mother, whose Jekyll-and-Hyde personality, along with her drinking problem, instilled in her paranoid and guilty thoughts about sex and pleasure. As Matthews digs deeper into her reflections on past lovers and relationships, she has a startling knack for self-analysis, describing her continual need to be the object of desire as well as the many instances that lead to her "intimacy-junkie" diagnosis. Behind Matthews' conclusion that she lacks ownership of her body is Shields. Like Freud's case studies, Shields acts as a gatekeeper of Matthews' life, shaping the details of her experiences into his interpretation of her narrative. In this way, their collaboration is further complicated and creates a dramatic entanglement that goes far beyond the therapist-session quality of Matthews' monologue. An insightful, thought-provoking probe into the impulses of sexual desire."—Kirkus"This book (this transcript, monologue, oral history, whatever you want to call it) hits a kind of sweet spot in that it’s at once like having a casual conversation with a fascinating friend and like eavesdropping on the therapy session of a fascinating stranger. Samantha Matthews is smart, sad, sensual, and above all, deeply sympathetic while being utterly unsentimental. David Shields has ingeniously carved a compelling, sometimes even gripping narrative from that thing we all do with our mouths, but that Matthews does particularly weirdly and well: talk and talk and talk. I had absolutely no idea what to expect when I began reading. I was even a little worried about what I might find. But I was spellbound from the first page."—Meghan Daum“I read it in one breath. The book is hard to resist, slicing, as it does, through so many complexities of sex.”—Samantha Hunt “Memorable, gripping, risky, transgressive, and above all brave.”—Whitney Otto"That Thing You Do With Your Mouth is extraordinarily artfully arranged; Shields does an excellent job of shaping a compelling narrative while letting Matthews’s actual content flourish. I also like that there are traces of him here. I was worried that his presence would feel invasive, simply because he’s a relative, a man, and implicitly a voyeur. Instead, his presence works in Matthews’s favor. Having such intimacy with Shields lends her a unique credibility and bravery. Their candid, even tone provides a steadying context for her experiences with the men who’ve abused her and the men and women she’s tried to seduce. I think this is extremely important work: maybe the least victimized account of abuse I’ve ever encountered, not because the speaker hesitates to call herself a victim, but because she is so complex and likable, because without trying to be, she’s so much more than that. It’s an incredible, thrilling, inspiring read. I love this book so much.”—Piper Daniels“To read That Thing You Do With Your Mouth is to sit behind a blackened mirror and watch as Samantha does That Thing with David Shields—meaning talk—winding deeply into her troubled, often shocking, always fascinating sexual past. Her tales are those of a dark Scheherazade, or an Ariadne stepping ever farther into her own maze, looking for answers, trying to save her own life. How many of us keep secreted inside us a host of sexual monsters who formed/deformed us? Samantha’s story is her own, but it will hold up a darkly fascinating mirror to many—and perhaps a way out of the cave.”—Jane Alison"[T]he overall collaboration is a largely seamless one, at times dizzying and heady, and at others gut-wrenching in the events it describes. It’s a short book, but its emotional force is considerable."—Biographile

By Martín Brassesco It's a brave, raw and also funny text that will make you think profoundly about things as identity, sexual orientation, sex itself, relationships, self esteem.... It's enjoyable and, for me, a little treasure I've found.

Matthews is unapologetically intimate/open/honest about her life and the role sex has played By Erica This book is a disjointed view into a woman's intimate thoughts. As the reader, we are permitted glimpses but not full stories. Piecing the vignettes together make Matthews relatable as a sexual being, while maintaining her privacy. The stories that were shared with Shields have been thinned and curated into a slim but powerful book. It is elegant in how it depicts Matthews as an conscious, strong, curious, smart, sexual woman who is not innocent nor naïve. There are no judgements about her decisions or life choices. She is herself--a sexual being. Simple as that. It's short.Easy to read. And aesthetically pleasing.I highly recommend it, especially to my woman friends.

By Jim Hunter This is a strong, brave, authentic, and honest voice, written in a revolutionary style, a documentary fictional writ that all women can benefit from. Matthew's voice is approachable and engaging and tackles the sexual horror show with barrier lowering humor.
