"In a conversation about his teaching and preaching style, Michael Curry notes with a laugh that hymns and songs of faith were always a part of the mix. “I learned what I believed in the songs I heard my family―especially my grandmother―sing. We sang our faith every day.” Out of that strong foundation, Bishop Curry shares the music of his childhood―the songs that have grown with him to shape an adult and vibrant faith."

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. like this whole book By scribe A special treat if you grew up familiar with "Negro spirituals" -- which, like this whole book, are a testament to a deep, living faith in the face of no end of suffering and challenges. It is written very clearly and openly, with a warm, bright, loving spirit, by the new Presiding Bishop of the entire Episcopal community. It would certainly appeal to any Christian.

Scruggs After reading "Crazy Christians" by Bishop Michael B. Curry, I purchased "Songs My Grandma Sang". As with Bishop Curry's first book, I could not put it down! Bishop Curry and I grew up in St. Phillip's Episcopal Church in Buffalo, NY, thus, it was a joy and pleasure reading his second book and also remembering the many songs he cited in his recent book throughout my life.In this book, "Songs My Grandma Sang", his combination of the years growing up with his grandmother, who came to live with young Michael Curry and his family due to this mother's illness, and his memory of those songs she sang during joyous times and times of challenges and trials, he gave to us a gift of what life was like in his family home and daily life in general; where the old time hymns, spirituals and gospel songs sustained the family through it all. A great read. A story of remembering Grandma's songs- familiar and unfamiliar to us as African American children and adults. Grandma shared her life and Christian journey with the Curry family. She sang her songs and she is lovingly remembered for her gift of those songs. Well done Bishop Michael B. Curry! A must read!

Spanning the colonial, independence, and dictatorship periods in Burma (Myanmar), A Burmese Heart is a gripping personal account of one woman and her family who lived through the making and unmaking of their country's turbulent history. Tinsa Maw-Naing is born into privilege as the daughter of a wealthy barrister and his wife in Rangoon (Yangon), and she is forewarned at birth that she is destined to live a life of extremes. She is introduced to chaos at an early age when her father, Dr. Ba Maw, becomes Prime Minister and initiates the independence movement with likeminded nationalists during the fall of the colonial era. Forced to confront war and mortality during her childhood, Tinsa's fate and mettle are tested amidst unparalleled destruction. Tinsa marries Bo Yan Naing, one of the famed Thirty Comrades who were the nucleus of the modern military, and becomes one of the first female English Literature university lecturers during Burma's gilded age of democracy. Her bliss is short-lived when a military dictatorship takes power in 1962, and her husband ignites a pro-democracy insurgency on the Thai-Burma border. In May 1966, soldiers ransack Tinsa's home and she is taken to the notorious Ye Kyi Aing Prison in the outskirts of Rangoon (Yangon), where she is imprisoned for years as punishment for her husband's insurrection. Her family and friends languish in secret detention centers as the first political detainees of that era, silent witnesses to the rise of a new regime. A Burmese Heart is an engrossing account of surviving history as told through the eyes of one woman. It is also the story of a country and its people - revolutionaries, intellectuals, martyrs, innocent bystanders - who are perpetually caught in the violent cycles of politics, a history silenced until now.

A Burmese Heart, by Y.M.V. Han, Tinsa Maw-Naing

Review "This is a well-written history from a part of the world that has been forgotten or overlooked by many...This is a book for any history buff, for anyone interested in Asia, in World War II, or in the British Colonies." - Portland Book Review"A number of memoirs detailing personal struggles under Myanmar's military regime have surfaced over the years...But Daw Tinsa Maw-Naing's book, co-authored with her grand-daughter Y.M.V. Han, stands out for two reasons. Firstly, the account spans a great length of time--from the British colonial era to the Ne Win regime. Secondly, being the daughter of Ba Maw and the wife of Bo Yan Naing, the lead author brings an insider's view and offers fascinating, if perhaps controversial, insight into some of the country's most notable individuals." - The Irrawaddy Magazine

About the Author Tinsa Maw-Naing was born in Rangoon (Yangon) in 1927. The eldest daughter of Daw Kinmama Maw and Dr. Ba Maw, the former Prime Minister, she married Bo Yan Naing of the famed Thirty Comrades in 1944. She was a lecturer at the University of Medicine in Rangoon before she was imprisoned from 1966 to 1968, and again from 1974 to 1976. Tinsa passed away in 2014 before the publication of this book. Y.M.V. Han is the granddaughter of Tinsa Maw-Naing and Bo Yan Naing, and great-granddaughter of Dr. Ba Maw.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. she was fortunate to maintain her sense of humor which makes the ... By MT A rare book published on the internal “invisible war of Burma”, an era which got erased from the Burmese history that now exists only in affected Burmese people’s memories.Daw Tinsa Maw-Naing’s fast pacing narrative style reveals her emotions, personality and voice in recording her stimulating personal account of what she has witnessed and went through her life – born into privileged parents who were powerful and influential than most Burmese, witnessed the first hand complex and tumultuous nature of Burmese politics and the country’s struggle for independence followed by a period of becoming a political prisoner herself after the staged coup d’état in 1962 - has kept me on the edge of my seat until the very last page. Although her life was full of turbulences, largely defined by silences and disappearances, she was fortunate to maintain her sense of humor which makes the reader’s heart a bit lighter to bear for all she had endured. The Invisible War in part II of “A Burmese Heart” revealed Daw Tinsa Maw-Naing’s resilient personality and incredible strength in overcoming all the misfortunes she encountered as the military dictatorship gained momentum after the 1962 coup. She was dismissed from her passionate English lecturer position, the income on which she was solely reliant on bringing up nine children, after her husband Bo Yan Naing - one of the famed Thirty Comrades who were the nucleus of the modern Burmese military at that time - ignited a pro-democracy insurgency on the Thai-Burma border. While she was single-handedly raising her children without any income and a missing husband, she was then jailed twice as a political prisoner as a punishment for her husband’s insurrection.Unknown to the world, thousands of other families’ encountered similar tribulations as the Maw-Naing’s in that era after their family members/close relatives or friends disappeared in the dark and locked up as political prisoners. Some who were fortunate to survive their ordeals, came out many years later as broken men and women, kept the silence of their “inside life” and took it to their graves. As this part of the Burmese history became too dangerous to mention, the topic became taboo, before being totally erased from the Burmese history. But the sad memories lingered on in the hearts of people who had endured the torments. So the author’s unbiased factual truths recorded in part II of “A Burmese Heart” will be embraced by the second generation, whose lives were effectively destroyed in their tender years, can now fill in the blanks to the memories of their loved ones. Until now, the only knowledge they have of their loved ones’ calamity was for the crime they had committed - in knowing someone who had gone underground to join the insurrection.I applaud Daw Tinsa Maw-Naing for being able to remain brave and strong until she finally decided to let not only the Burmese people but the world know the veiled and expunged part of the Burmese history by writing this book. A rare read no book lover should miss.

The story is a rare window into a fascinating part of Burmese history through the eyes of the intensely likable Daw Tinsa Maw-Naing. Despite the difficult subject matter, including years spent in prison, assassination attempts, and wars fought and lost, the incredible strength and good humor of Mrs. Maw-Naing shines through and makes this book a surprisingly easy and fun read. Her story is inspiring, hopeful, and heartbreaking, all in one, and I was captivated all the way through. This is the best book I've read in a very long time, and I highly recommend it!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Personal, poignant and beautiful, read this to understand Burma (Myanmar)'s rich and complex political history By Thiri Thant Mon My favourite Burmese history book so far. I cried every time a named person died, the shared pain made more personal by the fact that the authors were/are family friends and neighbours, I recalled memories of terror at the mention of shootings in University Avenue and Pyay Road - streets where I lived and went to school, and I felt through my very core, a deep sorrow for my country where hopes, dreams and futures have been lost for far too long.Thank you Daw Tinsa and thank you Vanessa for giving me goosebumps as you filled more squares in the patchwork of oral history that had been handed down by my grandparents and parents. Too little had been written about our own country during the very dark decades of brutal censorship and crackdown of the arts. Your work means so much. The whole book touched me but here are some passages that speak of Myanmar's potential and struggles:Pg. 193: (On 1950s Burma) "Rangoon was preposterously wealthy in the age of democracy... The reputation was only half true. Rangoon, and not Burma as a whole, was wealthy beyond belief. Chauffeured Rolles-Royces gleamed in the driveways of homes... Friends and neighbours skied in the Alps and sunbathed in the French Riviera, tales of rubbing shoulders with Elizabeth Taylor and Marlene Dietrich... Beyond Rangoon, the majority of the population lived in abject poverty and in the same conditions that their ancestors lived in generations ago. If one were to drive an hour outside the capital, the country fell into pitch-black darkness, electricity an unimaginable luxury for the masses." (A lesson to strive for more inclusive growth this time around.)Pg. 293: "Anyone who lived through 1980s Burma knew that something big, explosive, was ripening. Food, clean water, medicine and foreign currency, were virtually inaccessible to anyone except for the elite... (My family, living in our lakeside mansion, rationed everything from food to soap and when I left Burma for the first time to visit Singapore, the government allowed us to purchase a whole $64.) People who could no longer afford basic food and shelter poured into the streets, a new class of urban poor.... Thousands resorted to begging, prostitution, theft and petty crimes to stay alive. Then one by one, they began dying. They dropped dead in the middle of the streets. Rangoon was initially shocked by what was happening but was becoming immune to seeing the bodies in the gutters, desensitized by our own hunger." (I was too young and too protected to remember this and have no words in response.)Dear "Global Community" - we are trying to work our way out of this terrible fate. No human community deserves this. "We" include the current government, the military, opposition, civil society and ordinary citizens such as myself. Help us please and help by engaging and investing. Lift all sanctions that give you moral smugness and superiority but are literally killing our people and our future. Give us our human right for self-determination and stop your careless imperialism - yes, I mean you, the United States Congress, Brussels and Westminster.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An Ever-Expanding World By Scott William Foley East of West continues to be one of my favorite series. In this fourth volume, HIckman and Dragotta continue to expand their complex world, even going so far as providing maps and timelines. This series is a little bit western, a little bit alternate history, a little bit science fiction, a little bit near-apocalyptic dystopia, a little bit social, political, and religious commentary, and a whole lot of action. The United States is not united in this story. The South, Texas, the Native Americans, and the Chinese all have a territory and do not get along. In fact, all-out war festers due to political and religious conflict. To complicate matters, Death rides the plain, separated from his Horsemen because they want to destroy one of the only things he cares about - his son. Each volume reveals new depths of story, and characters become more and more complex as the series progresses. Though there is a multitude of characters, each is given a moment to shine, and each is fascinating. The artwork is surprisingly simple, yet always dynamic. Each character has a distinct body language and "look." Death, in particular, always jumps off the page. The action flows from panel to panel, yet their is also a nuance to the scenes. You'll find little details in the most unexpected places. This is a must-read series.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. End Times Come, Earth, 2065 By Zac Hanscom East of West, Vol. 4 continues the story of end times. It is 2065; Texas has fallen. War between the seven nations of America is imminent. Politics decide who is on whose side. Might and cunning decide who will survive. Of course, the Four Horsemen are around, as well. What are their goals, and how will they obtain them? The collection contains issues #16 through #19 – four issues instead of five – but it's still a lovely book.I wasn't a huge fan of Vol. 3 until I learned how to read East of West. While Saga, Southern Bastards, and other Image titles have book-length arcs, East of West is best enjoyed issue by issue. Read one. Stop. Read another. That sort of thing. Hickman's writing is on point, but the highlight of the collection is Nick Dracotta's artwork, particularly in issue #16, which contains descriptions of the seven nations, along with a time line. Some might complain about the heavy written content, but well done, as in Lazarus issue #16 or this issue, it brings a lot to both the single issue and the collection. ****1/2

It's cartoony, it's explosive, it's over the top at times. It asks tough questions and it paints an expansive picture of a horrifying future. There is hope for saving the world, and it's name is Death.

Best Ebook Fugitive Moment: The True Story of and Unsung Hero, by Phil Penningroth

Fugitive Moment tells the true story of an American hero who defied the YMCA and the United States government in order to negotiate the freedom of American and British prisoners of war in Bolshevik Russia. During the First World War, Louis Penningroth volunteered to serve with the YMCA to bring charity, faith, and hope to prisoners of war in Europe. In those days, the Y was one of the premier non-governmental organizations in the world, renowned for its ecumenical and apolitical policies. Under the leadership of evangelist John Mott, the YMCA succored prisoners without bias or favor in most of the warring nations. Soon after WWI, at the height of the Russian Civil War, Britain, France, and the United States landed troops at Murmansk and Archangel in an attempt to overthrow the Bolsheviks. For more than a year, these Allied soldiers fought a series of arctic battles with the Red Army. During this campaign, a number of Allied prisoners were captured. Because Allied governments had broken all diplomatic relations with Russia, these prisoners of war were forgotten and abandoned by their governments. When Penningroth proposed going to Russia to bring relief to the Allied prisoners, John Mott said no, fearing the response from the Allied governments. The Y was no longer apolitical, and Penningroth was forced to choose between his career and his conscience... Based on Louis Penningroth's papers and ten years of research, this "novel history" sheds light on a moment when a man of faith, with the wisdom of a serpent and the gentleness of a dove, braved the wolves of the world to live Christ's admonition to his disciples: "Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me."

I know his aunt, the man's daughter, and have been waiting for over 30 yrs. for this book to come out. I was so excited when she called me to say it was out on Amazon Kindle. I got a Kindle for Christmas, so I downloaded it and it came immediately. It is written as a novel, but is actually more of a history. If you are interested in Russia and history, this is a great way to learn more. Very few people know about this period or the heroic part he played in getting prisoners out of Russia.

The story is based on true events about his great grandfather which makes it even more incredible. I would highly recommend this book for all ages. I will try to be as objective as possible. This has to be one of the most amazing rags to riches stories ever. A Persian Jew who came to England when he was 18 with nothing. He couldn't speak English. He was homeless, living outdoors under cinema steps. He was even peed on by a drunk while he was sleeping. He suffered and still suffers from terrible clinical depression for which he had electric shock treatment. Now he sits in the House of Lords. He is a friend of kings, presidents, and prime ministers. Thoroughly inspiring. I would recommend this book for every aspiring and actual entrepreneur. It should be on every business school's must read list. One more thing. In our very large extended family, when there's a problem, the first words that anyone says are "Call Davoud." Why? Because we know he can help and he does help. He is always helping people. He never says no. Thank you Davoud.I recommend this book to everyone.

About the Author Patrice Williams Marks penned her first book in third grade; The Day Snoopy Got Married. While it didn't make the NY Times Best Seller List, it was an instant classic with the Nacca Valley Elementary School staff. From that moment forward, Patrice knew she was a writer. With a zest for travel and an insatiable appetite for all things vintage and period, Patrice uses her investigative journalism background to create authentic characters to occupy the pages of her books. Patrice has a talent for shining a light on riveting, obscure true stories from times past and generating page turners.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. An excellent if a tiny bit short read By Cruikshank1964 An excellent if a tiny bit short read, this story had a little bit of everything. There is romance, action, intrigue, and a lot of interesting characters in this story. We even get a slow building romance toward the end of the novel between Nelly and Senator Reed that leaves the story hopeful. Paul makes an interesting and conflicted character who is self-centered and mean with a very contradictory personality. In one scene he goes from lamenting his missing wife and his love for her to a woman he is cheating on his wife with, then having sex with the woman, and then lamenting his wife again.A note, there is some graphic depictions of sexual activities in this novel. They aren't overly offensive or descriptive, but it definitely helps for people to understand that it is in there. The important thing about this story is that it is fiction with flavorings of the real event spread throughout. It is interesting and entertaining, but it's not meant to be a documentary. It's meant to use these people to tell the story of Nelly Don and her life, but not for the nitpicky types who want perfect details. if you go into this book looking for a fictional and entertaining story with a lot of interesting scenes and different story-telling elements, then this is an excellent read!

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. American Woman's Adventure By ladyhawk I have both a digital version of this book and the paperback. I was impressed with the level of writing and storytelling of the author. That the story of Nelly Don is fascinating, and the book kicked it up a notch. The pacing of the story keeps you interested chapter after chapter, with each chapter ending with a mini-cliffhanger.I also like the postscript where we find out what happened to the real people after the story is done. Don't read the backend first! SPOILER ALERT!I never knew of Nelly Don, but am glad I discovered her and this book.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A Treat of a Book! By Customer It is amazing that such a wonderful woman such as Nelly Don, who in her own way advanced the women's cause, is not well known. Nelly proved in her time, that a woman could start a retail empire with her sewing machine and her kitchen table and break new ground in women's wear. Patrice Williams Marks does an excellent job of blending fact with fiction and a lot of suspense and action to bring us this entrancing tale. I will certainly read more of her books!
