The young boy, way too thin for his age, stares down the long railroad tracks covered in undisturbed ice and snow, wondering aloud, “Will this really be how it all ends? Will I be just another body lying frozen in the snow like the others I saw in the streets on the way here? Will anybody ever know what happened to me? Will my mother or father ever know . . . if they are even alive?”

The astonishing and inspiring true story of a young Dutch boy’s survival during World War II, One Step Ahead traces his remarkable survival. This harrowing tale, as told to Barbara Harwood by Jack Prins, begins with six-year-old Jack watching the bombing of the ship Statendam in the harbor across from the apartment where he has been placed with virtual strangers.

Facing certain death around every corner, Jack miraculously manages to survive the invasion and occupation of Nazi fanatics bent on murdering every Jewish child in Europe. From his remarkable tale of deprivation, hunger, and courage, through his teen-age years in an orphanage, and on to his journeys to Israel and eventually America, Jack’s sense-of-humor and resilience remain intact, making his story a reader’s delight.

Koches I had the privilege of reading an advance copy of this fantastic book. From the very beginning it grabs you, tears at your heart, and makes you feel you are right there with Jack, experiencing the horror, and also the hope. This is a must read for history buffs, and also for those who like a well written "thriller." Through it all, Jack's sense of humor prevails and carries him through difficult times to a better life. Don't miss this one!

As fellow compatriots and Nazi survivors of he German Occupation of Holland in 1940- 1945, we greatly appreciated Jack Prins book.Although , as non-Jews we never had to go thru all the trauma Jack Prins experienced , we were deeply moved how Jack described his ordeal and survival during the German occupation in a clear - despite the horrible circumstances-- and humorous way.We are fortunate to be acquainted with this remarkable man ,since all of us are –coincidently-- spending time in the same village in Mexico

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Highly recommended! By F.W.W. This is a really engaging book; in more ways than one and in more parts than one it will move you. Though we all feel we know the history of that time, the book presents that history in a graphic and vivid way that can make it new -- made me feel more than ever before a little of what it must have been like to live through it. As well as telling a story of such horrific events and yet of such miraculous survival that it's unforgettable. Told with a humanity and a down-to-earth touch that had me totally caught up in it. And one gets to meet a remarkable person with the toughness and resiliency to survive that terrible time and the warmth and charm and sense of humor to tell about it winningly. There are very many things, then, that make this book worth reading!

How did she navigate the world of venture capitalists and investment bankers to engineer the sale of her company and reap a personal fortune? And what does her subsequent odyssey to buy and donate a new national park in Maine’s north woods―thus repaying what she regards as the “harmonic debt to the planet” she incurred by manufacturing beauty products―tell us about America and the American dream?  Queen Bee is a fascinating biography of a fascinating woman, her game-changing skin-care company, and the quest to create a national park in the north woods.

  • A richly textured portrait of the woman who built Burt’s Bees from nothing and altered the global business of skin care.
  • A tightly woven story of the paper-industry exodus, the giant clearance sale of the north woods, the downward spiral of paper-company towns, and the battle for a new national park.
  • A tale of the American Dream in action― what it can do for the fortunate few who are in the right place at the right time with wits and determination, and what it can do to the unfortunate many who find themselves on the wrong side of “creative destruction.”

Queen Bee: Roxanne Quimby, Burt's Bees, and Her Quest for a New National Park, by Phyllis Austin

Review "It's quite a story. For more than half her life, Roxanne Quimby lived a minimalist life, off the grid, with none of the comforts most of us take for granted. For the second half of her life, Quimby has been a study in contrasts, moving from poverty to great wealth. Quimby considers herself an artist, but she is one of the nation's most successful businesswomen. She is a conservationist, but she also is reviled by many individuals and groups that trumpet the conservation cause in Maine. Without doubt, Quimby is our state's most controversial woman. And all because she wants to create a 70,000-acre national park in the North Woods, adjacent to Baxter State Park...Without question, Quimby is to be admired for building a small business, Burt's Bees, into a huge company that she sold for hundreds of millions of dollars. We value business people and stories like this, so she deserves a lot of credit and praise for this part of her life...She was very clearly in charge, from start to finish, going through many managers and workers, sometimes managing with Tarot cards and intuition. There's a lesson here for our political and business leaders, too, as Quimby moved her business to North Carolina when Maine's state government failed to treat her fairly or work effectively with her to grow her business. But that's not the controversial part of her life...Austin captures Quimby in the book's Epilogue: 'As a Thoreau acolyte, she wants to pay her dues to nature for having made her money manufacturing consumer goods.'" --George Smith, centralmaine.com 5/27/2015

From the Inside Flap Queen Bee is an intimate portrait of Roxanne Quimby and a masterful history of the north woods. It's the story of a young woman who fled a domineering father, a rootless childhood, and suburban suffocation. She and her young man and their dog drove cross-country to San Francisco in 1970 looking for a new way of being in the world. Five years later they spent their meager savings on cheap land in Maine and joined the homesteading movement. It's the story of a single mother and aspiring artist weighed down by back-to-the-land poverty. Tired of being cold, sick of hauling water and working dead-end jobs, she met a reclusive beekeeper and started making beeswax candles for craft fairs. Then she developed a beeswax lip balm, and what happened next seems plausible only in hindsight. It's the story of a businesswoman who created the world's leading manufacturer of natural skin-care products from her creative imagination. With no business background, no capital, no investors, and no line of credit, she clawed her way to front-of-store displays in America's top retailers. She was a master of product creation and branding, a master of marketing. She hit the surging interest in natural products at exactly the right time, and she had the smarts to recognize it and the determination to capitalize. She reinvented her company again and again, asking no quarter and giving none, and she sold Burt's Bees for several hundred million dollars after twenty years of single-minded effort. And it's the story of a retired, wealthy capitalist who feels called to restore some portion of the north woods wilderness and create a new national park. Pursuing her new mission with her old determination, she has run into nail-spitting opposition from the paper industry's dying order. Queen Bee is the multifaceted story only Phyllis Austin, with her thirty years of north woods reporting and her two years of direct access to Roxanne Quimby, could have written.

About the Author Journalist Phyllis Austin (Brunswick, Maine) has covered environmental and forestland issues in Maine for more than 30 years, including many years at the Maine Times. By Charles Friedman Having served as Burt's Bees first Formulation Chemist and Scientific Director, and as a direct report to founder Roxanne Quimby, I experienced nine years of this improbable rags to riches account in the heart of the journey.I applaud author Phyllis Austin's Herculean effort researching and coalescing all the facts, and I can personally attest to many. The reader will experience a rare, remarkable and true tale.Chuck FriedmanBurt's Bees Formulation Chemist & Scientific Director 1994-2003

As a native of southern Maine and growing up in a mill town, I learned a lot about Great Northern Paper, the Maine woods and the history and future of that region. I was surprised and enlightened by the political negativity of what would be a wonderful thing - a north woods National Park.I was intrigued by Phyllis Austin's ability to write a thorough biography of Roxanne's rags to riches story, covering her history, her entrepreneurship, and her tenacity. Phyllis Austin is an amazing writer. I couldn't stop reading it.

Very thorough account of Quimby and Burt's Bees By Dad5 As a long-time regular visitor to the north woods of Maine, and as a professor of finance and entrepreneurship I’ve followed the Roxanne Quimby and Burt’s Bees stories for many years. Based on “Queen Bee” I’ve come to realize that the business cases and numerous magazine articles I’ve read over the years have greatly over-simplified Quimby’s story. Author Phyllis Austin does a thorough job of taking the reader through the development of Burt’s Bees and shows that the path to success was not quite as linear as other readings might have you believe.Austin also does a thorough job of examining Quimby’s land acquisitions in northern Maine and her efforts to develop a national park adjoining Baxter State Park. As a recreational visitor to this part of the state, I appreciate the issue of open access to logging land and can empathize with the concerns of local Mainers as Quimby moved to limit access to her ever-increasing acreage in the area.My only critiques of the book are threefold. First, Austin tends to write as an investigative reporter, which results in extraneous detail in a number of sections of the book; for example, tracing Quimby’s heritage back to 1638, but this section is easy enough to skim or skip entirely. I also found myself reading lightly in a few other sections. My second critique is the absence of any photos or maps (except for a few maps on the very last few pages). The chapters each begin with stock photos of Maine images, but nothing specific to Quimby or Burt’s Bees. In my entrepreneurship course, I use quite a few images from a variety of sources, which add some flavor to the narrative. The only photo in the book of Quimby is on the cover and there are no photos of Burt, their various business locations, or the company’s products. The absence of maps was particularly notable in the section on Quimby’s land acquisitions. The significance of certain land parcels were a bit unclear in the absence of relevant maps. Finally, the reader should note this is the story of Roxanne Quimby and not (to the extent they can be separated) the story of Burt Shavitz. As the author notes, Shavitz did not agree to be interviewed for the book and so minimal attention is provided regarding his story. All in all, however, if the story of Burt’s Bees is one in which you have an interest, this book adds a fair amount of heft to the story that is not readily available elsewhere.

I love the characters and the attitude that oozes from their pores. The flow is great and the possibilities for more connections and stories….it just makes my mind spin!MC novel with hot bikers? Check! Alpha male? Check! Strong female? Second Chance at love? Check!! There's more but as always, no spoilers!! Seriously, though...do yourself a favor and pick this one up!!!!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I see a ton of potential in this story and can't wait to read the next book!! By J.L.L I was given this book in exchange for an honest review. This is Ms. Schmidt's debut novel and the story line in this book is very good. I really enjoyed the story line and felt it had great potential. However there were a few things that fell short. I truly believe that those issues would all be completely solved with a good editor and experience. There were places in the book that were kind of choppy and also places that things seemed to move extremely fast and skip forward only to then come to a halt. There were some minor timeline issues also. One thing I do feel strongly about is that the characters were very well developed and very easy to relate to. To be completely honest, all the issues I encountered I feel are just basically inexperience and lack of guidance from a good editor. All of that will come with time and experience. All the basics and things that are hard to learn are there, all that is left is the fine tuning. I don't know if Ms. Schmidt had an editor for this book and it really doesn't matter, the important thing is that if she were to hook up with a good editor right now with this book, I am very confident that my 3 star rating would be a 5 star rating when they were done. I am hoping that this new author does not get discouraged because you are too talented and the book world needs you and more authors like you. Thank you for choosing me to receive an ARC of your debut novel, I very much enjoyed the story and hope that my notes and this review help you in your journey.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Definite read!!!! By AndreaGAH This is a strong 4 star debut for what has the potential to be a great MC series.I loved this storyline and the direction it took. It had uniqueness and originally which is often difficult to find. I didn't find myself loosing interest or knowing what happened next. Definitely a step outside the boxed genre expectations. What a vast array of personalities! Sweet? Alpha? Crazy? Evil? Independent? Whatever your poison!!!!! Find it here. Probably not going like them all but there will be appreciation for the role.I enjoyed the writing style. Felt it was formatted well with a focus on details. I can't say a smooth read for me. A little jumpy in spots. I really felt the focus on details may have caused this. I do believe that with more writing experience this issue will be resolved.Impressive storytelling. Great use of descriptive terminology to get that realistic feel. It was easy to mind visualize what I was reading.Lots of emotional attachments. I liked that my heart was laughing over these HOTT alphas instead of angry/mad. Then my heart broke and cried. I want my heartstrings to be pulled. It means I am involved. The dialogue is so captivating. Lots of humor and wit. It does an outstanding job of connecting the characters.Strongly suggest reading this one. I don't feel you will be disappointed.I can't wait to read the next. I definitely need more. AndreaGAH(Arc for honest review)

24 of 26 people found the following review helpful. a ninety year-old book that could be written yesterday By A Customer The Cruise of the Snark relays the saga of Jack London's construction, and two-year voyage in a 45-foot sailing ketch from San Francisco to Hawaii, the Marquesas, Tahiti, and the head-hunting Solomon islands. His difficulties in getting the boat built after the 1906 San Fran earthquake are hilarious as he describes the assaults of his contractors and creditors during the construction. After they finally launch the voyage six months late, they manage to find Hawaii through sheer luck, where Jack and his plucky wife, Charmain, learn to surf (remember this is 1907!), visit the leper colony at Molokai and the "House of the Sun" volcanic crater on Maui. Then comes the "impossible traverse" to the Marquesas, which they didn't realize couldn't be done until a week after they'd begun. Continuing on to Tahiti and the savage Solomon islands, Jack and his determined "Snarkites" encounter natives, tribal chieftains, missionaries, and overcome their problems with incredible persistence and naivete as only some of the first white people to enter these areas could possess. Incidentally, the "cook" on this voyage was the famous photographer and world explorer Martin Johnson who was picked to go on his very first adventure by a letter to Jack advertising his thirst for travel. With his wife Osa, he would years later revisit the Solomons for the purpose of photographing cannibalism before embarking on their epic photographic safaris in Africa and Borneo. Jack only mentions Martin in passing during "the Cruise", perhaps sensing some literary and photographic competition that he would encounter later. This book is a great shelf companion to Martin's "Through the South Seas with Jack London", upon which he began his great series of travel books. "The Cruise" gives Jack's viewpoint as the sponsor of the trip, and an established literary giant. Whereas Martin's opinions on the racial makeup of the islanders are quite bigoted and reflect the prevailing views of the turn of the century, Jack is more open-minded, and willing to point out the failings of the white race in adapting to these island paradises. "The Cruise" is a great non-fiction book, among few others by London such as "the Abyss" that tell of his adventures and opinions first-hand as they happen. It truly captures his sarcastic yet hopeful perspective of himself and the whole concept of adventure.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Hilarious, and human By Marc Ness What a great story. For those who have worked on or around, or own, boats, you will laugh out loud. Not something usually associated with Jack London, but true. For those with an ounce of humanity, his writing about the leper colony will both chill and warm your heart. For those who have ever thought about celestial navigation, more laughing out loud. Ten times better than William F(ing) Buckley's sidebar in Airborne (admittedly a wonderful book, and free of WFB's usual nonsense-on-stilts Latin-cognate pretensions). Finally, a love story. A man and his boat. A man and his wife. What a boat (in spite of itself), and what a wife.

12 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Read it in Hawaii! By A Customer If you are travelling to Hawaii or any Polynesian destination, then make this book one of your companions. London makes you feel like you are on the boat with him as he takes you from the docks of San Fransisco, to the Hawaiin Isles, to Tahiti and beyond. With tremendous humility and wit London portrays his journey through the South Seas brilliantly, ultimately concluding that attempting to live out a dream can become a nightmarish reality.
