Lambert As an ESOL and Spanish teacher I whole heartedly endorse the purchase and study of this book. It concisely describes literacy and bilingualism. Then it discusses working effectively with students and their myriad linguistic needs. Then, and I love these chapters, it offers extremely precise and helpful descriptions, steps, and examples of teaching methods. It focuses on writing, reading, oral discourse, content areas, working within the confines of district curricula, grouping of students, and even ends with a chapter on assessment. It is pragmatic. I can attest to the fact that the book is well researched and the methods covered are proven by research and the experience of many educators. Moreover, the listing of popular and supportive books to have students read while the teacher implements the described methods is intelligent. Thank you Brisk and Harrington for an inspired work! It's just what the TESOL and FL fields need right now.

A Heroic Figure in Finger Lakes Wine History By DPHBrooklyn This review originally appeared in the web site FingerLakesWine.infoWhy hasn’t the life story of Dr. Konstantin Frank been made into a major motion picture?Frank's bio is full of all the right stuff — wealth and privelege, war, emigration, privation, demagoguery, and (belatedly) the acknowledgment of his great contribution to the Finger Lakes wine industry.Born into a wealthy German-Ukranian family, Frank fought in a White Army brigade against the Bolsheviks, earned a doctorate at the Odessa Agricultural College, managed a huge vineyard and agricultural experiment station, fled the Russian Army near the end of World War II, and found a way to emigrate to the U.S. Desperate for an employer who could use his considerable talents, and living with his family in a squalid tenement in lower Manhattan, Frank's future looked bleak. A friend suggested the Geneva NY Agricultural Experiment Station as a possible employer.The "Genevans” were not encouraging. They rebuffed his appeal for a position. But Frank would have none of it. Using scarce cash, he got on the bus and traveled to Geneva -- without an appointment. There was no job suitable to his talents, but somehow (with the help of a German speaking employee) he talked himself into a low-level grant-funded job.Tom Russ tells the story of Dr. Frank expeditiously in his short 148 page book, most often without irritating detours. For those who know the Dr. Konstantin Frank story, there are not a lot of surprises, but the book does fill in many of the gaps in the story. It also forces the reader to reconsider some of the conventional wisdom.For instance, Frank's battle against hybrid grapes (and for vinifera) has sometimes been portrayed as a battle of good (vinifera) versus evil (native grapes and hybrids). But, it’s pretty clear the establishment at the time was not exactly evil. The Geneva Agricultural Experiment Station was mainly interested in improving yields and serving existing wine growers. Americans were simply not very sophisticated wine drinkers. Vinifera wine was expensive and off the radar screen for most consumers. In short, Dr. Frank was simply ahead of his time.Frank’s first job led to a meeting with Charles Fournier, the president of Gold Seal Vineyards, and the rest, as they say, is history. Fournier and Frank pioneered the cultivation of cold climate vinifera, Frank went on to found his eponymous operation (which was more agriculture experiment station than winery) and his son Willy appeared in the nick of time to save the winery from ruin. The Frank family has been very lucky in this respect. Family friction has immolated many a winery.Readers who are unfamiliar with the story will be pleased by this book. Those who know more will likely want more than Russ provides. His picture of Dr. Frank the man is pretty two-dimensional. We don’t know why he was a popular figure at wine tastings, what his sense of humor was like, why he was so very very sensitive to criticism. We have no idea what he and Charles Fournier talked about on their long road trips together. We don’t even know what kind of wine Frank liked or how much he drank. Frank’s inner life remains a complete mystery; the author doesn’t try to reach those deeper thoughts and feelings.Perhaps it is impossible to know Frank in a larger sense. He was aloof, absent-minded, no doubt hardened by the drama and tragedy of his life. Then too, Russ is a professor, not a professional biographer. But the Doris Kearns Goodwins and Hollywood screenplay writers of the world should know that Dr. Frank was an heroic figure in the wine world, almost mythic, with an amazing life story. They may find another tale to tell.

It was sweet, funny, sad, and well written! As a fan of the ACS, I couldn't help but hear the entire thing in Bald Bryan's voice. That's not a bad thing and won't stop me from buying the audio book. Fans of the radio show and the podcast will of course love this book, but I hope the reach goes farther than that. I was diagnosed two years ago with End Stage Renal Disease and am on the kidney transplant list. Living with a chronic illness is tough on the best of days, but your attitude and sense of humor in dealing with it is an inspiration. Now bring on President Me!!

I think a better title would be Ramblings of a Malcontent. I am a 35 year veteran of Corrections with most of my time spent in the same prison Tom writes about. I, like most of the of people I have worked with have executed my duties with a sense of pride. If he truly fulfills his days at work as he describes he does not represent the majority of the staff that work there. If you wish to read a mediocre fiction have at it. Stay away from this one if you want a true view of Corrections.

8 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Barely based on some true events. By MCC Employee Well...I finished reading this book written by Tommy "Giovani". Not his real name, but cooler sounding than his real name. I've worked for DOC much longer than Tommy "Giovani", the made up name is just adorable. I have first hand knowledge of many of the events that he weaves into his book. Some have shreds of truth to them, not that the other events didn't happened, but that he wasn't there at the time or involved. Example: He names an event in which an offender placed a certain piece of fruit in a place that he shouldn't have, writes that he was there when it happened, that the offender had to go to the hospital, and that he happened to be at the hospital talking to the doctor later with his ex-wife. Complete fabrication on his part. He wasn't there, and the offender did not go to the hospital. The item was removed at the institution by DOC medical staff; there are other events like this throughout his book. Though there is some truth to some of his stories, the accuracy on how he tells them is absurd. The extent that he tries to paint himself as this smart, brave, and witty hero in these scenarios is nonsensical. I'm not writing a book, or here to bash anyone including Officer "Giovani". But one example of his disingenuousness is the period in which he tried to get everyone to believe he was a Navy SEAL (not a SEAL, not even close). I will however critique his book, because he wrote it, and he put it out here. Officer "Giovani" is a published author in the way that any one of us could be a published author. He paid Fulton Books to print his book. No one paid him, gave him an advance, or even spent money out of their company's coffers to print his book. It is overwhelmingly evident in the lack of editing. In chapter 7 for example: in the chapter title, gallows humor is called "gallous humor". I know that gallous can be used as an alternative for "gallows", but the primary definition for gallous is: (elements & compounds) of or containing gallium in the divalent state; that's just weird. Oh and when you are trying to educate your readers on something, make sure you know it yourself. DWI doesn't stand for "Drinking While Intoxicated" as you also stated in chapter 7. I could go on and on boring anyone that is reading but I'm done. At best this could be listed as: Barely based on some true events.

8 of 10 people found the following review helpful. A Cowards Journey By Tallbott Like anyone who works up there I found these stories to be stretched at best. I am sure this author changed his name so the public couldn't look him up and see exactly who wrote all this greatness. If I were to use my imagination I would think Tommy G was some athletic stud. But that is far from the case. Let me paint you all a picture. Think of someone who is about 5.8 that has a body shaped like a bowling pin, poor hygiene, was likely the fat kid in high school that everyone picked on. No take that same person and imagine how they would react when an inmate beats another inmate down to the point that he dies a week later from his injuries. This amazing officer stood five feet away and pissed his pants. He didnt come to the aid of this poor guy getting the crap kicked out of him he just stood there while responding staff took care of business. Now I am sure in Tommy G' s next book he will write how he stepped in and took control of the incident. Any how I did get a great laugh reading this book because I know Tommy and pretty much his entire cast of characters. One last thing to think about, prisons are full of violent inmates. Do you really believe that Tommy could walk around treating them all with such a high level of disrespect??? They would have beaten his ass. But i do believe he is the type to pick on the low functioning mentally ill because most of those guys function at about a nine year olds capacity. So I guess it is easy to be a bully with people who cant truly protect themselves.

Smith I love this finely-crafted, lovingly-written tribute to the people, places, and attitudes of my home town, Ouzinkie, Alaska. Full disclosure: I've known Fran since 1971, and she sent me a copy to review. I immediately bought one to send to my brother. I was so pleased to read her description of my late parents, Norman and Joyce Smith, both of whom died in the village in their eighties. In addition, beloved people like Jenny, Lily, Greg, and the Monks and Nuns of St. Herman come to life in the pages of this gentle, moving, and often humorous book. Spruce Island, Alaska, her home for many years, provided many challenging life lessons, all of which Fran shares with a warm and unassuming tone that will attract many readers. Completely devoid of any of the hype and artificiality of many of the "bush" TV shows about Alaska, this book still manages to describe the difficulties and challenges of living completely off the grid on a remote Alaskan island. And Fran Kelso concentrates not so much on her struggles as on the people she came to know and love. Fran completely understands the concept of being a friend and neighbor. She also has amazingly wise insights into Alaskan village life. Having spent all my school years from Kindergarten through college with Ouzinkie as my home town, I lived in the same environment as Fran describes. Some have experienced village life and gone on to satirize and belittle it; Fran Kelso celebrates it. I predict that this lovely book will go down as a classic in rural Alaskan literature. The book features lovely drawings and photos which help to draw the reader into her topic. Very highly recommended!

We have easily revived our kinship through the internet By Joyce Herold Recently, Fran Kelso, the author of Alaskan Attitudes, found me still in Colorado fifty years after our close friendship there. We have easily revived our kinship through the internet. Fran sprang her latest book on me and asked for my thoughts about it. Read and cogitated over, the book has brought me many enjoyable hours and new insights into where the author has been and who she is. I gladly respond.I recommend Alaskan Attitudes to both the questors who crave an elemental, challenging existence for themselves (preferably in a forest, on a bay!) and the city and town folk who want a field guide to what it’s really like, living up there in Alaska.This book is essentially a straight forward narrative written in direct words and measured cadences. Scattered throughout are descriptions and musings about places, people and happenings that make the reading anything but dull. Spruce Island quietly gets under your skin and you enter a small North Country world. You begin to actually live with Fran and learn how she coped and thrived, with help from various like-souls of Alaska.A land claim was the start and the making of a cabin next. Fran lays out in detail the building components and process - site, design, tools and equipment, nails, lumber, roofing and human know-how, patience and sheer strength. The same meticulous cataloging of how everything went includes mistakes, modifications and, sometimes, perfection. Fran and friends do it all with equanimity.Fran’s “running water” was earned by running out to the creek and hauling water by bucket loads. But she never leaves a tale as a pure “pioneer-woman” bit: she writes, too, of the joys of modern convenience when her water eventually arrived by pump and pipes. That said, it still was the wilderness so hot water was always a hard-won luxury. The search for dry beach wood and its sawing, splitting and stacking were never-ending. Fran seemed to be tiring of it yet she recovered to exultation over a chain saw powered by a never-fail generator, brought up the hill with near disaster. She caught, canned and smoked abundant fish but let others endure the patience needed for hunting. She gathered a whole lexicon of food plants and knew how to cook them and sprinkle them on salads. (That she found avocado, too, is beyond belief…)Perhaps surprising to some go-it-yourself readers is another core of the book, the constant presence, assistance and companionship of other human beings – her son, visitors, neighbors, delivery men, students, a pair of Russian Orthodox monks and more. As an ethnologist (retired from a natural history museum), I particularly admire Fran’s insightful, sensitive approach to the Alutiiq Native Americans in the nearby village of Ouzinkie. Their reserved acceptance of an outsider subtly unfolds throughout the book. Fran had the mind, training and empathy - as well as a banjo and songs from her earlier entertainer’s life - to charm everybody (almost). She clearly depended on the villagers for help, sometimes in the form of “pagooked” necessities. (Read the book and look it up!) In return she committed to giving back and did so, very well, as a teacher and musician.To end my comments in an unexpected way: Hidden in Alaskan Attitudes I found some quite lyrical passages that are almost haiku-like in the author’s plain “Quaker” style. A favorite of mine is the following, which I lay out here as free verse with a few words removed:When it gets down to basics, we needa roof over our heads, food and water.In Alaska, a reliable heat sourceand layers of warm clothing.I had a cabin built near to a creek on an island.I had a good wood stove and a forest of potential firewood.Now I just had to have groceries.So…now go and read.Addendum: Lacking are maps of Spruce Island, to clarify the personal geography of daily life, and of the Kodiak area, to trace trips by boat and seaplane. Also, since Fran missed mentioning books and reading as escape midst isolation, whence the worldly quotes that begin each chapter?
