A memoir of grit and resilience, Stepping Stones traces the story of one man’s journey into adulthood, and the many stories that shaped who he would become.

Born into a large, Lebanese-American family in the steel belt of western Pennsylvania, Joe is regaled by tales of the “Old Country” from the aunts, uncles and grandparents who help raise him.

As he faces the challenges of his own American childhood—battling the lingering effects of polio, struggling against stringent expectations of parents, community and Church, chasing his dream to play football for University of Nebraska—Joe draws strength and guidance from the family who surrounds him and the generations who have come before.

A story entirely unique yet universal, told with humor and enduring love, Stepping Stones explores how our roots define us, even when we believe we have broken free.

RAMSEY CAMPBELL, PROBABLY, originally published by PS back in 2002 since which time the author has expanded some of the essays, added others and generally tinkered around with the running order . . . as is his wont. Thus the original 140,000-or-so words compiled from Ramsey s non-fiction of three decades have been considerably (and entertainingly) expanded to represent getting on for a full half-a-century of Campbelliana now well in excess of 150,000 words. The subjects range from the perils of authorship to the delights of amateur fiction and film, from drugs to nightmares, from the Highgate Vampire to the Dracula Society s marching song. Friends are remembered and so is Mary Whitehouse. A seminal study of schoolgirl spanking is brought up to date. Many thoughts on the history of horror fiction are included. And, at last, it is revealed why Harlan Ellison® is responsible. May the reader variously laugh, weep, ponder, disagree and turn uneasily in bed. Time for another taster boy, we really do spoil you folks!

Ramsey Campbell, Probably, by Ramsey Campbell

From Publishers Weekly Anything new from the pen of British horror master Campbell (The Long Lost, etc.) is cause for celebration. Drawing together essays, introductions, afterwords and reviews from diverse sources dating back to 1984, this book displays some of Campbell's rarely seen facets. "Fiedler on the Roof" stands as a withering response to an academic's blanket criticism of horror. Campbell is also in fine form defending good horror in "The Crime of Horror." He spares neither censors nor creators of mediocre work in such forays as "Turn Off" and "Floundering on the Bottom," but he's no less merciless in assessing his own failures ("Chasing the Unknown" and the introduction to his collection of early tales, Height of the Scream). The real surprise comes in discovering how funny Campbell can be. He admits that if he were not who he is he'd be a stand-up comedian, and this is borne out in such essays as "Fame!," "A School Visit" and the Biercian "Horror Writer's Lexicon." For those seeking something grimmer, "Near Madness" is as harrowing as (and its truth more upsetting than) any of Campbell's stories. "Strapped for Cash," an amusing piece on spanking films, could have been much shorter, though as a rule when the author does digress, he does so magnificently. A detailed bibliography will please scholarly fans. Campbell displays the wide erudition and insight that make his stories so memorable and, with its analyses of film, writing and life in general, this is a must-have for anyone interested in the creation of fiction.Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

US Army Paratroopers from the elite 173rd Airborne Brigade (SEPERATE) were the first US Army Combat Soldiers to enter South Vietnam in May 1965. Surviving in the jungles of The Central Highlands of II Corps not only involved enemy contact with the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong soldiers. Learning survival skills in the jungle environment was taxing both physically, and mentally, for one of the US Army's most highly decorated units, with more Medal of Honor recipients than any combat unit of similar size during The Vietnam War. "Contact Charlie" Company of the 173rd Airborne Brigade's 1st Battalion 503rd Airborne Infantry lived in the jungles of The Central Highlands for extended periods of time, surviving off Long Range Recon Patrol (LRRP) dehydrated meals, and C-rations. They depended on the Central Highlands triple canopy jungle streams for their water supply. The paratrooper's home was a foxhole and his supplies were carried on his back in a "rucksack". The paratroopers would stay in the Central Highlands mountainous jungles for several weeks before returning to the rear base camps for stand down and re-supplying for the next mission. The only way out of the jungle, and the paratrooper's assigned one-year tour of duty, were to be either killed-in-action, wounded-in-action, or to endure the mission as designated by the US Army Chain Of Command. Operations by paratroopers of "The Herd" are contained within this book and YouTube video links to Combat Operations in South Vietnam by The "Sky Soldiers" of The 173rd Airborne Brigade (SEPARATE), a stand alone and independent brigade of US Army paratroopers. The "Herd" paratrooper's were continuously "saddling-up" and were enemy team and "hawk" hunters on Search and Destroy missions in the largest two provinces, Kontum and Binh Dinh, of South Vietnam during 1965 to 1971. The paratroopers of The 173rd Airborne Brigade were considered to be US Army Commanding General William C. Westmoreland's "fire brigade". The "Sky Soldiers" were a quick reactionary force and operated on Search and Destroy missions in War Zone D, Dak To, and The Central Highlands, a strategic high ground that had to be held by American forces during The Vietnam War to prevent the domino effect and fall of South Vietnam to communist North Vietnam and Ho Chi Minh. The "Sky Soldier's" brotherhood and "esprit decor" continues today through various 173rd Airborne Brigade Associational chapters in the United States, Australia, and Italy. The younger "Sky Soldiers" of today have continued to prove themselves in recent combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. The common spirit existing in the members of "The Herd" prevails through inspiring enthusiasm, devotion, and strong regard for the honor of the airborne groups and this reflects greatly on missions of freedom for their fellow Sky Soldiers, patriotism, and The United States of America and for all freedom loving Americans, and their allies. "Airborne, All The Way".

Did not participate in the available options guess I just prefer more of a standard approach. Anyway, the book was well done; best for the reader interested in learning what life in Vietnam was like for a combatant.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. uninteresting By Mike from New Jersey As a Vietnam veteran I was disappointed with this book due to repetition used to help fill pages. I noticed misspelled and missing words as if the book was never proof read. I lost interest and didn't finish it.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. I just read Eddie's book and was very happy with it By Rick Bierman I just read Eddie's book and was very happy with it. I joined the company and the Headhunters at the same time Eddie did. George Vanderhoff was the first of the "old guys" to welcome me to the Headhunters. What a great guy. I only knew him for a couple of weeks before he was killed but I have thought about him many times over the years. Hill 975 was a bad place, I felt like we were a bunch of sitting ducks. We did much better when we were moving around and the NVA didn't know where we were going to pop up. Captain Blodgett was a great leader and he came up with some pretty good tricks. We were like a bunch of brothers, at times we would argue and bitch and moan about one thing or another, but when we were on a hump or the crap hit the fan, all the little stuff was forgotten and we worked very well as a team. I knew a lot of good men in Charlie Company and the Headhunter Platoon and Eddie has done a great job of telling their story.

Colonel George M. Chinn's (1902–1987) life story reads more like fiction than the biography of a Kentucky soldier. A smart and fun-loving character, Chinn attended Centre College and played on the famous "Praying Colonels" football team that won the 1921 national championship. After graduation, he returned to his home in Mercer County and partnered with munitions expert "Tunnel" Smith to dynamite a cliff. The resulting hole became Chinn's Cave House―a diner that also functioned as an underground gambling operation during Prohibition. He even served as Governor A. B. "Happy" Chandler's bodyguard before joining the Marine Corps in 1943.In Kentucky Maverick, Carlton Jackson details the life of a legendary and highly decorated Marine whose career spanned both world wars, the Korean War, and Vietnam. Chinn's service paired a love of history with a special kind of genius: he documented the history of military technology while designing innovative weapons such as the M-19 automatic grenade launcher, which is still used in the armed forces today. After leaving the Corps, Chinn leaned on his many connections to become the director of the Kentucky Historical Society.Carlton Jackson's entertaining biography weaves together outrageous tales of gunplay and politics while revealing Chinn's sense of humor, unbending will, and a sense of destiny that could only be fulfilled by a true twentieth-century Renaissance man.

Kentucky Maverick: The Life and Adventures of Colonel George M. Chinn, by Carlton Jackson

Review "Chinn exemplified the variegated expertise, even genius, of a twentieth-century Kentucky Renaissance manChinn's amazingly varied careers as football coach, Mercer County 'character,' political groupie, military adventurer, honored weapons inventor, and controversial public historian inform both a fascinating personal biography and a telling commentary on twentieth-century Kentucky.Chinn's public life is at once compelling, disquieting, and in many ways profound, much like the Commonwealth's history and culture during his years."―Russell Harris, retired senior associate editor of the Register of the Kentucky Historical Society

"Kentucky Maverick is well-designed, well-researched, and well-written. Jackson has developed a schema of portraying the "story" of Chinn's life against the backdrop of the 'maverick.'"―William Ellis, professor emeritus of history at Eastern Kentucky University

About the Author Carlton Jackson (1933–2014) was University Distinguished Professor at Western Kentucky University and the author of numerous books, including P. S. I Love You: The Story of the Singing Hilltoppers. His book Hattie: The Life of Hattie McDaniel was listed by the New York Times as one of the fifty most notable books of 1989.

Upon reaching the age of eighteen, Jane was taken from her school and sent to a specialized facility where young women are prepared for marriage. She knows that her future husband will demand her complete submission, but she cannot help blushing crimson at the thought of belonging so completely to a man she has not yet met, let alone being shared by three men each seeking to prove himself the most adept at mastering her. Under ordinary circumstances Sergeant Andrew Creston would not have the resources needed to marry, but his skill and courage in battle have won him the chance to compete for a bride. Over the course of several days, Andrew and two higher ranking officers will have the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to properly master a woman, and the man deemed to have dominated her most thoroughly will win the right to claim her as his wife. Jane’s defiance when ordered to pleasure Andrew on the first night of the competition earns her a painful, embarrassing spanking from the handsome soldier, yet her body’s response to his dominance is unmistakable and she is left quivering with desire. But with two other men also going all out to prove themselves best suited to claim her, it will take much more than just a bare-bottom spanking for Andrew to make her his forever. Publisher’s Note: The Sergeant’s Claim is an erotic novel that includes spankings, sexual scenes including a foursome, medical play, elements of BDSM, and more. If such material offends you, please don’t buy this book.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Very good author. By S. Rose There were many aspects of this book that I really liked. I liked the main character. The futuristic scenario was adequately explained without a lot of bulk. There was some scenes that I found really erotic. However, unlike many readers of this type of fiction, I don't really like the harsher aspects of BDSM. I like spanking romance, not humiliation. The Hero didn't do that to the Heroine but it was part of the novel. The author was very good at showing the reader the erotic reactions of everything by the heroine. There is no full consent however in this book due to the circumstances of world the author is writing within. I rated this a 4 but I didn't love this book and I removed it from my archive as I will never read it again. Emily Tilton is one of my favorite authors. Her books are well written. This is no exception. She must have done a lot of her own editing as this book was from Blushing Books and the editing was very good. I bought this book because of the author's name. I have liked her works in the past and will buy more from her in the future (as long as this is not the first in a series.. I don't care to read more of this.)

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Not a Pleasant Read! By lovelife I could not finish this book. Had to skim numerous times to get through all the inner dialogue of the main character Jane and even with the sergant Andrew. The description of this book on Amazon does not begin to describe it. Andrew is in competition with two other military men, a general and a major and must gain the approval of the leadership of the school in order to take Jane home. This is a challenge to Andrew as the VP wants to make an example of Jane and wants her to be dominated cruelly by the man they choose. On the night when Jane is with the major alone, he places her in a dog cage where she has to urinate on herself and then she gets caned by him. Not erotic at all. Also how often must the author use the word, "bottom" in this story. I'd like a word count on it, as it was constantly repeated like an obsession!Purchased another book by this author on the same day and probably won't read it. Feel duped over the reviews. If you like the thought of 18 year old girls getting trained (strapped and pleasured) by their female teachers at their school and treated like mindless creatures by teachers and prospective male owners then you will enjoy this book.

Click, buy and enjoy the book but you may want to have a fan close by. Seriously! Another well written smoking hot read from E. T. but I have begun to expect nothing less from this author. I did find it interesting that the Lourcy family, who we have met in other books, plays a hand in this one that is set years in the future and I just get a kick out of noticing things like that! I received this book from Stormy Night Publications as an Advanced Reader Copy.

A leading architect of the Italian Renaissance, Baldassarre Peruzzi (1481–1536) has, until now, been a little-known, enigmatic figure. A paucity of biographical documentation and a modest number of surviving buildings, coupled with an undeservedly critical assessment by Giorgio Vasari (1511–1574), have long cast Peruzzi’s career in shadow. With Becoming an Architect in Renaissance Italy, Ann C. Huppert taps into a known, but neglected resource—Peruzzi’s autograph drawings—and reveals the full scope and artistic mastery of Peruzzi’s work and its enduring influence.   Extraordinary not only in their beauty and design inventiveness, but also in the varied representational techniques and practical mathematics noted within them, Peruzzi’s drawings record an evolving artistic process. Reassessing his architectural masterworks, Huppert also explores lesser-known work: his studies of Roman antiquity, realized paintings and unrealized buildings, as well as engineering projects. Huppert shows that Peruzzi anticipated modern representational methods and scientific approaches in architecture, and pinpoints the moment when architecture began to emerge as a profession distinct from the other arts.
