A remarkably warm-hearted, uplifting and inspiring story of one boy's survival against the odds.

Abdi's world fell apart when he was only fifteen and Somalia's vicious civil war hit Mogadishu. Unable to find his family and effectively an orphan, he fled with some sixty others, heading to Kenya. On the way, death squads hunted them and they daily faced violence, danger and starvation. After almost four months, they arrived in at refugee camps in Kenya - of the group he'd set out with, only five had survived.

All alone in the world and desperate to find his family, Abdi couldn't stay in Kenya, so he turned around and undertook the dangerous journey back to Mogadishu. But the search was fruitless, and eventually Abdi made his way - alone, with no money in his pockets - to Romania, then to Germany, completely dependent on the kindess of strangers. He was just seventeen years old when he arrived in Melbourne. He had no English, no family or friends, no money, no home. Yet, against the odds, he not only survived, he thrived. Abdi went on to complete secondary education and later university. He became a youth worker, was acknowledged with the 2007 Victorian Refugee Recognition Award and was featured in the SBS second series of Go Back to Where You Came From.

Despite what he has gone through, Abdi is a most inspiring man, who is constantly thankful for his life and what he has. Everything he has endured and achieved is testament to his quiet strength and courage, his resilience and most of all, his warm-hearted, shining and enduring optimism.

By Alpha Reader ‘Shining: The Story of a Lucky Man’ is the biography of Abdi Aden, written with Robert Hillman.Abdi Aden’s story begins like any other – he’s a happy kid from a loving family, living in soccer-mad Somalia. Then in 1991 civil war breaks out in Mogadishu, and Abdi’s world falls apart. What follows next is Abdi’s harrowing story of survival when, at just 15-years-old, he’s forced to flee the violence and death squads and make his way to Kenya."I am lonely, I am exhausted. But for the fact that I desperately want to remain alive, I would be happy to die."From there the journey takes a sickening twist, as the refugee camp turns out to be as dangerous as what Abdi has been fleeing from. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees sets up the camp in north-east Kenya, and it becomes the world’s biggest refugee camp; an indication of the scale of violence breaking out across Somalia. The camp was too dangerous for UNHCR and so abandoned, which left the refugees effectively looking at starvation and slow death – so Abdi fled again. What follows is both an incredible story, and an incredible reminder of why stories like Abdi’s and those portrayed on SBS shows like ‘Go Back to Where You Came From’ are so important. Abdi’s story highlights the breakdown of the “system” when people get caught up in wars and violence – then the imaginary “queue” goes out the window, and the absolute breakdown of organisations designed to help refugees and asylum seekers buckles under the pressure and people are forced to survive any way they can.Abdi’s survival story sees him searching for his family by making his way back to the Mogadishu he had run from – on the slim chance that he has not been left alone in this world. The story then tracks all over the globe – from Europe to Australia, where Abdi eventually settles into an extraordinary life and he makes the inspiring most of his freedom. This is a remarkable story and a gripping read. I began reading, knowing the happy ending that awaits Abdi in Austraila (as he’s been doing a fantastic media turn, promoting his book) I still found myself riveted to the page, desperate to know what happened next in the chapters of his life …The book also has quietly powerful moments of reflection, like when Abdi sees Frankfurt airport for the first time and is struck by the sheer wealth and hope in such a display of prosperity, in stark contrast to his Somalia;"Sure, I knew that Big Europe was rich, but this rich? No, no. When can Somalia be as rich as this? In a thousand years? That’s what’s so scary. Right now, our main industry is murder. Or maybe I’m too pessimistic. A few decades ago, Germany’s main industry was murder, to – more murders than in Somalia, many, many, many more. And the whole country was smashed to pieces, like Somalia. Maybe there’s hope for us."And it’s probably a reflection of how much time Abdi spent in transit as a refugee, that one of his most powerful reflections upon arriving in Australia also happens at Melbourne airport, when he encounters racism for the first time and is made to feel like a criminal for the colour of his skin;"I’m going to learn in the years ahead that the whole of this continent of Australia once belonged to people whose skin colour was much darker than my own, and that they were considered (for the most part) to be of no importance to the white people who took their ancestral lands from them. And I will learn, too, of what was known as the ‘White Australia Policy’ and slogans such as ‘Australia for the white man’. But I come from a country where everyone is black or brown, coffee-coloured, chocolate-coloured, some blacker than boot leather. There is no discrimination in Somalia, not against dark-skinned people or fair-skinned people."I appreciated that fact that Abdi spoke about his troubles in Australia – he was missing home and his family and this country wasn’t always welcoming. His side of the story rings so true, and makes those calls of “If you don’t like it – go back to where you came from!” all the more infuriating, because they fail to acknowledge how racist (sometimes even subversively so) Australia is, that those fleeing from extremely multi-cultural and diverse countries are made to always feel like outsiders in this country which should be their safe haven.I’ve been saying ever since I finished this book that I’d like to see it on reading lists in high schools all over Australia. It’s such a powerful story – harrowing, of course – but also brimming with hope and celebration and important reflections on contemporary Australia culture."Then I look around me at this big country I’ve come to, and I’m okay. I’m happy. I’m Nuurow, the Shining One. Parties, music, good food to eat, of course I’m happy. The last time I even glimpsed a soldier was in Bucharest. Where are the Australian soldiers? Haven’t seen one."I loved this book, I cannot recommend it highly enough – it’s one of those books I want to get up on a soapbox about!

The events that one person can experience are almost beyond belief. Yet despite it all Abdi Aden maintains his optimistic spirit. The book is beautifully written in Abdi's voice which is very appealing. I was totally engrossed in the book and moved by it. Very highly recommended - as a triumphant human story and for appreciating the challenges of refugees who have managed to reach Australia (and other countries). Abdi is obviously a very special human being.

Sad and Happy Days is the first part of the autobiographical novel Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roach: Cedric's Story. As the title suggests, it's the story of a life buffeted by turbulence and dramatic change, this first part beginning in the drear fifties, spanning the blossoming colour, chaos and sexual liberation of the sixties, and, out of necessity, breaking off in the early seventies. It is a reflection on an individual person's life, and on the period itself and what it was that was that for better or worse was changing. It is a study of the vulnerability of innocence to corruption, with the conviction running throughout of the goodness of nature, and of human nature in particular. The content includes sexual themes from childhood and adulthood, dealing with both masturbation and pornography. The content itself, however, is not pornographic.

You feel as though you're with the author in those places (the northern English fells, Exeter, Italy and Corfu). I was interested in what the author says about the Vietnam war and how young English and American people reacted to that. I understand English and American people better after reading it. I'm Malaysian and we had lots of problems with communists in my country. I didn't understand the hippies. We were sympathetic to the English and the Americans as we suffered under the Japanese in the second world war and were happy when the Japanese were beaten by America. I hadn't really understood how important the Vietnam war was to young English and Americans, or how all the drug taking and the music was part of that. The psychotherapy was very interesting as well. People were really trying to change themselves in those days. I found the memories of childhood sexual experience surprising and quite shocking. It made me realise how vulnerable children are in their immaturity, and how easily they can make wrong decisions that can change their lives. I thought it was a great book and am looking forward to reading the next part.

Adele Marion Fielde, born in 1839, was a teacher, an evangelist, a social activist, scientist, lexicographer, writer and lecturer. As an American missionary in China, she became a local teacher and evangelist, struggling to reconcile her Baptist upbringing with her restless intellect. As an energetic social activist, she was a major figure in the suffragist movement, the abolition of the slave trade and the founding of two hospitals. As a scientist she conducted seminal research which is still discussed and studied today. This book provides an in-depth biographical study of the life of this remarkable woman, exploring her impact on her contemporary society, and her abiding influence on the scientific and academic communities to the present day.The author examines the social and religious constraints on Fielde's life and work and discusses her efforts to transcend these through the construction of a personal system of belief which emphasized the importance of helping others. He demonstrates how, as a woman of immense energy and intellectual ability, she was able to influence the scientific and political communities despite their prevailing negative attitude towards women.Adele Marion Fielde will be of vital interest to scholars concerned with the study of gender and the history of science.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. what a Woman! By Elinor L. Horwitz My thanks to Dr. Leonard Warren for this absorbing biography of a woman I personally had never heard of and who is, I believe, unfamiliar to most readers. Set against the intellectual, religious, and scientific climate of the second half of the 19th century and the early years of the 20th, this recounting of the life of the awesomely brilliant Adele Marion Fielde should be required reading for anyone interested in such wide-ranging subjects as: missionary work in China, political and cultural life in western and eastern Europe, the early feminist movement, late-19th-century scientific thought and research....and more, more, more. And then there is the fascinating Ms. Fielde herself, a woman of extraordinary intellect, humanism, insight and energy, who not only survived an extraordinary tragedy but turned enforced self-reliance into the driving force of a most remarkable life. Why doesn't someone turn it into a movie?

While making her favorite snack with her Daddy, little Sofia makes an amazing discovery about herself! Her realization changes the way she sees this colorful world. Filled with wonder and questions, Sofia journeys into a world that isn’t just black or white, but a beautiful rainbow of colors. This book is the story of a little girl learning that she is Multiracial. “Chocolate Mixer” addresses the common questions our children may ask about a world filled with different cultures, skin-colors and ways of life, and how even our own parents can look so different from one another. Jason Armstrong was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. After living there all his life, he decided to pursue his dream of opening his own wellness center, which led to him moving to Italy. While living in Italy with his two children, his love for writing, which had been dormant for sometime, resurfaced when his daughter innocently had an epiphany over some chocolate milk. Up until this time his writing had mainly consisted of poetry, of which a few poems were published in local corporate newspapers. After successfully opening up a wellness center in the Tuscan region of Italy, his love of wine met with an opportunity to launch his own startup importing wines and spirits into America, which lead him to moving back to New York. Currently he lives in Brooklyn, New York and spends his time pursuing his passion for teaching, running his wine importing business and publishing his first children’s book Book Endorsements: “Jason Armstrong has written a heartfelt book that every child will enjoy reading. This book promotes self-love and an appreciation of our differences. Chocolate Mixer reminds children that they receive the best parts of both parents, and this is what makes each person special and unique.” Keshia B. Warner, Principal-Oak Park, Illinois “Chocolate Mixer is a pivotal book to have in any collection, young or old. This book takes an important lesson taught by a young girl on acceptance and love of self and others, she sees that everything in this world is a beautiful array of mixers just like her. Simply amazing!” Delali Kodah, Achievement Coach, New York Department of Education “This book is a wonderful story about two children learning who they are. Accepting & loving themselves…and everyone else based on who they are & not what they are. It’s a very important message that all children and adults should hear.” Kelly Armstrong, New York Department of Children Services

By Angela Reads This is a brightly illustrated book that is sure to grab little ones' attention right away. My daughter was interested immediately. The book aims to help children understand what being multi-racial means. The little girl Sofia explains that her dad is chocolate and her mom is vanilla and she and her brother are 'chocolate mixers'. She realizes this while she is mixing chocolate syrup with vanilla soy milk. The book ends with a very positive message about how we all are a mixer of some kind or another and we are all special just the way we are.I would recommend this book to any young child, regardless of race. It will help them understand the world a little bit better.(I received a sample of this book for review purposes.)

Wonderful Children's Explanation of Mixed-Race Families, Beautifully Illustrated By Anne Wingate After three and a half weeks in bed doing nothing but read, I am finally able to stay up long enough to write some reviews. So don't think that my posting many reviews in a short period of time means that I didn't read the book. I read every word of every one. I would have read a cereal box if nothing else had been available. This book was provided to me without charge in return for an honest review.I'm white. My best friend is black. Her husband is white. I found this book terrific in its explanation, on a child's level of understanding, of mixed-race families. I wish I had had it when my oldest daughter, seeing a black woman for the first time, shouted, "Mommy, why is that lady purple?" I told her the lady was not purple; she was brown; and it was because Heavenly Father doesn't want all the flowers in his garden to be the same color. As her grandmother had a magnificent iris garden, she understood that at once. But this book is ideal for answering questions like this. I don't know yet who I'm going to give this one to. I'll have to think about it, and maybe ask Shalana. What am I saying? I KNOW I'll ask Shalana.

Kleinman-Dominguez I am a Media Specialist teacher and parent of a multiracial son. I have been reading it to my students and I like it, there aren't enough good books about growing up multiracial for the little ones or kids with limited vocabulary. There are some but they are less focused on the topic and the "swirl" or multiracial content is often just a character trait and not truly explored. Kids need to connect to the characters in an authentic way on the things that they really want to talk about. I like that the biracial reality is not some veiled behind the scenes elephant in the room kind of thing. Kids, especially the little ones or ones experiencing conflict or prejudice for the first time or ones without the language to express themselves need to be able to say it exists, how they feel about it and explore the topic. It is positive and validating, it gives them a way to express their feelings and oftentimes kids need that, they need the words, they need to have a way to think of things in a concrete positive way, especially ones with limited vocab, either due to ELL or something else.

I guess I hope they've improved or something. Petite women, huge breasts, incredible bodies, gorgeous cookie cutter pretty much every time. Physically and emotionally abused by one or more bad guys. Escapes to town that has groups of incredibly gorgeous, tough specialized military usually retired men just waiting for said above described woman to save and share cuz that is what they have wanted to do forever. And of course they expect her to give herself to them in all ways which always seems to end up with her getting spanked, even tho she was abused before. I guess I would really like to read a story about a more realistic woman, maybe tallish, regular sized boobs, pretty but not drop dead gorgeous, etc... And the guys fall for her cuz of her, gasp, personality, which I would hope would be snarky. And for heaven's sake, these petite abused women have sex with four or more big all over men not just once but twice or more in one night for the first time and can still walk and sit the next day. Yeah. Jus t saying.

Wrong names used, last names, incorrect brothers, etc grouped together. Are there no proofreaders/editors anymore?I do like the books, it's just difficult to get passed those sometimes, I have to go back and look to see was said previously, gets confusing.

Tom Berthel first met Hall of Fame football coach Hayden Fry when, in the mid-1980s, his investment firm, Berthel Fisher & Co., became a corporate sponsor of the University of Iowa Athletic Department. This business partnership not only helped Berthel Fisher establish a winning public image, but it also gave birth to one of the most important and enduring friendships of Tom Berthel’s life. Fry became a mentor and father figure to Berthel, and the wisdom Fry bestowed on him through their mutual friendship taught Berthel invaluable lessons in leadership, motivation, and what it takes to be a winner in business and in life. These are the lessons that form the core of Beyond Xs and Os. In the book, Tom Berthel recounts the many lessons he learned from Coach Fry—some but not all related to football—and explains how they helped shape his life and business. In each chapter, Berthel outlines a specific lesson he learned from Coach Fry, explains how he integrated these philosophies into his business and personal life, and offers advice to help readers apply them to their own lives and businesses. Each chapter also features a special “Postgame with Coach Fry” sidebar written by the venerable Coach Fry himself, in which he reflects on the events and lessons depicted in the chapter and offers a deeper perspective on each, enriching the lesson.Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Sports Publishing imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in sports—books about baseball, pro football, college football, pro and college basketball, hockey, or soccer, we have a book about your sport or your team.Whether you are a New York Yankees fan or hail from Red Sox nation; whether you are a die-hard Green Bay Packers or Dallas Cowboys fan; whether you root for the Kentucky Wildcats, Louisville Cardinals, UCLA Bruins, or Kansas Jayhawks; whether you route for the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, or Los Angeles Kings; we have a book for you. The part about your mother was absolutely moving, I cannot say enough for the honor that you give to this woman, who did more than most women would have the strength to do! It showed a loving attitude towards your family that I found very pleasing. You and your family are an example of hard work and togetherness, an ultimate testimony of what can truly be called 'the American dream.' Thank you for the encouragement, and challenge, that no matter one's situation, the outcome can be glorious! It means a lot for those of us that are young, and still looking with uncertainty at the future.

Brace yourself for yet another display of back slapping fraternity between two alpha males. While Berthel showcases himself as a family values guy, research reveals that three of Berthel's own brothers left the firm after very brief stints on board, all of which went on to become successful professionals in the investments arena, far away from the top down pressure to hawk risky Berthel Fisher ventures, pun intended. Berthel is NOT a team builder when it comes to his own blood. Worse, read Fry's pandering to the Bush brothers, using 9/11 blather to paint himself and them as patriotic Americans. Where was Fry when America learned the tragic truth of the great Bush lie, so boldly told to wage war on a country which had nothing to do with the attack on 9/11?

Rare is the athlete who captures the imagination of a generation. In Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle, sports culture had two such figures. Undoubtedly, DiMaggio and Mantle are two of the most revered names in baseball literature. However, there is one particular moment that has been overlooked by baseball historians and writers: the 1951 pennant-winning New York Yankees team—DiMaggio's last year and Mantle's rookie season. For that one year, the paths of these two baseball icons converged, the naissance of Mantle's career poignantly juxtaposed with the slow descent of DiMaggio's final season. Strangers in the Bronx is more than a chronicle of a World Series–winning team, it is also a study of heroes: the decline of an all-too mortal American icon and the emergence of the newest sensation in sport.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. BACK IN THE DAY WHEN THE PLAYERS WERE “FELLAS”… REPORTERS WERE “THE BOYS”… EVERYTHING WAS “SWELL”… & DiMAGGIO WAS DOUR By Rick Shaq Goldstein 1951 was a turbulent year in the Bronx for the New York Yankees. It was the hope and promise of a rookie by the name of Mickey Mantle… and the crumbling of a Yankee icon that wasn’t really the human being perceived by the outside world. Firmly embedded in the very middle of this uncomfortable changing of the guard… was the one and only Charles Dillon Stengel… known to the world as “Casey”. And though the book’s cover photo is of the “The Mick” and “Dimag”… Casey gets as much if not more “book” time than the two aforementioned icons. It makes sense that Casey is center stage… since he was the manager that had to balance the crumbling demise of what was known as Joe DiMaggio… and at the same time manage and control the expectation of a raw young superstar in the making. The author does a good job of chronicling not only the statistical trail of this crossroad year of Yankee history… but also the psychological and mental aspects. Amazingly… the most impressive part of the book… is the balancing act… and onstage performance… of a heretofore caricature… of a rubber faced… wobbling… mangler… of the English language… “The Old Perfessor” himself… Casey Stengel. Casey is one part politician… one part… vaudeville act… one part… baseball strategist… and one part… (Which was surprising to me even after half-a-century of dedication to the love of baseball) disciplinarian. Also surprising… but not as much so… was what an unlovable… unsympathetic… individual… Joe DiMaggio was. In fact… after reading this book… I can now “answer”… without hesitation… the poetic… musical question asked by Paul Simon: “Where have you gone Joe DiMaggio?”…The answer is… he got the hell out of New York… at the request of all his teammates! Here is one of the nice descriptions of his alienation from his teammates. “Tommy Henrich and DiMaggio had played side by side for 10 years, a decade of baseball shared. Each man deeply respected and admired the other’s skills on the ball field. Truth is, a harsh word never passed between the two. But Henrich could never remember sharing a meal with Joe.”“Joe was extraordinarily self-conscious off. (The field) DiMaggio wasn’t the most articulate fella and he feared coming off as an uneducated rube.” There is a very nostalgic throw-back feel to the book as individuals always refer to people as being “swell”… and the other players are quite often referred to as “the fellas”… and the reporters warmly referred to as “the boys”. It’s almost like watching an old black and white Jimmy Stewart or Humphrey Bogart movie. The release date of this book seemed to change many times as I received numerous Emails from Amazon notifying me of such changes. It has been my experience that when this happens… more often than not… that foretells editing problems… and there were a number of typos and grammatical mistakes. This is a book that will be enjoyed by “old-school” baseball fans.

Author O'Toole paints magnificent portraits of the reclusive DiMaggio, the much-heralded Mantle who hit moon shots from both sides of the plate, along with General Manager George Weiss, Manager Casey Stengel, and other members of the team such as Yogi Berra, Hank Bauer, Gil MacDougald, and others. The author does a wonderful job in presenting the tug-of-war between Weiss and Stengel as to what Mantle's immediate future should be; the minor leagues at Kansas City or with the parent Yankees. We have the conflict between Stengel and DiMaggio which each presented as nonexistent to reporters while having private thoughts about each other. Mantle's struggles that had him sent to the Yankees' Kansas City's minor league farm club led to his father's stern lecture that eventually got him on the road to success. The book concludes with coverage of the 1951 World Series between the Yankees and the New York Giants. The book contains no photos but Author O'Toole paints such vivid pictures throughout the book of the principal characters that the lack of photos went unnoticed by me. Forest have been felled on the printing of books on the New York Yankees but this one is a gem whether you are a Yankee fan or not. Buy the book. It is well worth it.

A lot to be desired By redwing If one wants a readable, accurate replay of the 1951 season, this is a good place to go.If the intent is to learn more about the relationship between Joe and Mickey, then it's not.The author's admitted sources are the already-published newspaper accounts of the beat writers and columnists of New York in 1951, and little if any new material will be found here. Casey should have gotten space in the title, since the book is as much about him as Joe and Mickey. That's not bad, but also not what I was expecting. It's a quick and somewhat unsatisfying read.
