Learn to unlock your inner explorer in this riveting account of a great, forbidding adventure and “a fascinating examination of the seven key traits of history’s most famous explorers…[with] infusions of insight and enthusiasm” (Publishers Weekly, starred review). In 1856, two intrepid adventurers, Richard Frances Burton and John Hanning Speke, set off to unravel a geographical unknown: the location of the Nile River’s source. They traveled deep into an uncharted African wilderness together, arrived at two different solutions to the mystery, and parted ways as sworn enemies. The feud became an international sensation on their return to England, and a public debate was scheduled to decide whose theory was correct. What followed was a massive spectacle with an outcome no one could have foreseen. In The Explorers, New York Times bestselling author Martin Dugard shares the rich saga of the Burton and Speke expedition and guides readers through the seven traits that history’s most legendary explorers called on to survive their impossible journeys. In doing so, Dugard demonstrates that these traits have a most practical application in everyday life. We see St. Brendan the Navigator, driven by hope, sail into the unknown, and the curiosity that inspired John Ledyard to attempt to walk around the globe, and the perseverance Howard Carter needed to discover Tutankhamen’s tomb. From these and other examples, Dugard extracts lessons for unlocking the explorer in us all.

The Explorers: A Story of Fearless Outcasts, Blundering Geniuses, and Impossible Success, by Martin Dugard

From Booklist Author of titles about Christopher Columbus, James Cook, and David Livingston, Dugard here delves into the explorer as a personality type. Acknowledging a debt to a similar inquiry, mountaineer Wilfrid Noyce’s The Springs of Adventure (1959), Dugard structures his title around a famous expedition, Richard Burton and John Speke’s 1857–58 quest to discover the source of the Nile. Using seven traits to illustrate their characters as explorers, Dugard discusses the events of their journey in terms of each man’s—as the book’s chapters are headed—curiosity, hope, passion, courage, independence, self-discipline, and perseverance. As Burton and Speke encounter problems typical in discovery annals—daunting terrain, illness, privation, and mutual acrimony—Dugard develops the seven traits along several tracks, including psychology, physiology, and other adventurers who exemplified the trait under discussion. Thus, his narrative can jump from introversion to dopamine, and from Burton-Speke to Ernest Shackleton’s courageous perseverance to rescue his crew from Antarctica in 1914–16. Such a varied shuffling of subjects should keep the exploration audience locked into Dugard’s portrait of the discoverer archetype. --Gilbert Taylor

Review "Using his usual brilliant research, Martin Dugard takes the reader on a thrill ride to some of the most dangerous places on earth. Can you handle it?" —“Bill O'Reilly"A captivating introduction to the world of exploration. . . Dugard knows how to tell a good story and assembles a fascinating cast of characters.” — Columbus Dispatch“Martin Dugard has written bestselling histories with Bill O’Reilly, and with me, but with The Explorers, he shows that he does his best work as a solo performer. The Explorers has a distinctive voice and the drama never flags from beginning to end.” —James Patterson “An exciting and uplifting book, with inspiration on every page.” —Seth Godin, author of The Icarus Deception

About the Author Martin Dugard is the New York Times bestselling author of Into Africa, The Training Ground, Last Voyage of Columbus, and The Explorers. He is also the coauthor, with political commentator Bill O’Reilly, of Killing Lincoln, Killing Kennedy, Killing Jesus, and Killing Patton. He lives in Southern California with his wife and three sons.

Splendid Book By Amazon Customer I read Mr. Dugard's wonderful "Into Africa" a few years ago and was mesmerized by that book's recounting of the adventures of Livingstone and Stanley. Over the past decade my reading has been heavily tilted toward books by explorers and about explorers. This book, THE EXPLORERS, does exactly what I had always wished someone would do and that is to catalog the central traits of those who went boldly into the void. Were they courageous or crazy? Herein Mr. Dugard gives us a fast-paced read that contains all the explorational drama one could wish for, but he pauses now and then to discuss what all these men (and women) had in common. He decides that the traits are these: Curiosity, Hope, Passion, Courage, Independence, Self-Discipline and Perseverance. Each of the traits is meticulously illustrated by tales from the trail. And there are stories herein that are new to me. I had never heard of the young man who walked from Capetown to Cairo to win a woman's hand in marriage. That is romantic!Overall this is an inspirational read that will have you journeying through your own psyche as you assess the unique psychological nature of the explorers. Would you be up to the challenge had you lived in those times?W. F. Strong, GOOD BOOKS RADIO

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. I would recommend a bona fide historian's endeavor over this book any ... By David J McClain Very disappointing. In the author's own words, rather than telling the "Burton and Speke saga...I began to wonder about not just the emotional motivations to pursue a life of adventure, but the specific character traits that went into being a successful explorer." This results in meandering pop psychology ruminations about "lizard brain," the characteristics of introverts and extroverts, and other tedium. The journals and rather interesting story of Burton and Speke are given only synoptic attention, rather than being used as prism through which to study their character and motivations in vivid color. I would recommend a bona fide historian's endeavor over this book any day.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. This book was a complete disappointment. From the perspective of the drive and psychology ... By E. J. Pyle This book was a complete disappointment. From the perspective of the drive and psychology of explorers, it offers great promise. From the recurring theme of Burton & Speke's explorations, it trivializes Burton's work and lionizes Speke's. Up front, I am a Burton fan, having read most of his biographies and several of his works. That said, Speke was not ever the scientist and offered a conclusion that he sought, with Grant, to prove. Burton offered a hypothesis that he vigorously defended, offering to have it refuted when strong refutation was never supplied until much, much later. Instead, the author trivializes the corpus of Burton's work and expertise. The author presents what amounts to an argument that the establishment character is always right and the outcast is always wrong. Details of the tectonics aside, Burton was wrong for the right reasons and Speke was right by accident. Speke was blundering by sheer persistence, and Burton was an outcast by nature. The role of polar expeditions in defining "explorer" would have made for a better and more contemporary case study than Burton and Speke, yet this is only touched upon. As a result, this book was a great disappointment and I cannot recommend it to anyone, excepting anyone who has never dug into the history of the central theme of the book.

How can one begin a worthwhile story without the immortal words Once upon a Time? My Once upon a Time is set in the 1940s and fabulous '50s, a time where our world was being redefined by a post-war economic boom, all the while remaining true to the universal and unchanging plights and endeavors of humanity that will forever remain untouched by the passage of generations. It is a story of my boyhood in Thomas, Oklahoma, from my earliest childhood memories all the way through high school graduation. And like my world at the time, my story both uniquely defines me and simultaneously reflects my mere commonality to all mankind. Shelley's poem "Ozymandias" implies that everyone and everything will ultimately be forgotten: "Nothing beside remains . . ." It is this espousal that should compel those of us who have stories to tell, and each of us does, to write them down, to pen them into timeless monuments to the past and heralds to the future before they escape into the mists of history. As we age, our treasured memories age with us . . . evolving into greater and greater historical and personal significance, but fading and calcifying as time marches on. Napoleon said that geography is destiny. I hope you'll find within these pages that mine was a blessed destiny . . . one each of us can find some relic to share in and relate to as I recount endearing times at home with my family, adventures with my brothers, and infamous school day escapades with my classmates who helped carry the 40's and 50's into the memories of our hearts.

Stone Being about the same age as the writer, I found myself reliving many of the experiences about what he was writing. I caught myself both grimacing and laughing out loud. It also made me sad to realize that the children of today do not enjoy the freedoms that the youth in the 40s and 50s did. It is unheard of today to leave children to spend a day in the neighborhood park without constant supervision. I give the author two thumbs up for sharing his experiences with those of his era and for validating our own stories we have shared with our children and grandchildren.

If one has gone through any kind of struggle or setback, there's a life story here that resonates with all the feelings one might experience. But instead of wallowing in bitterness and regret, these authors use life's painful and yes, even tragic circumstances to transform and renew. Especially powerful were the narratives of forgiveness, ones that I especially need in my life. As Suzanne Romo says, "What I learned was that you don't forgive people for them; you forgive them for yourself." This book is for anyone looking for the power to change from being stuck in anger and disappointment to the restoration of joy, self-fulfillment, and love.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Inspiring Book! By Morgine I have read a few of these wonderful books. Your Joy level is based on your ability to “connect” with the stories and find kindred spirits! Many people today are struggling and feel separated and all alone. They feel embarrassed and alone and not vulnerable enough to share our pain with others. They often never imagine some of the people around them are also going through similar things, because most of them are also “putting on a happy face,” as if nothing is wrong. This book can be a real “shot in the arm” and Inspire us to keep going and know that many people were in similar places, or even worse off than we could ever imagine and yet, are creating new lives today. It’s great to just have around and open each day and read a new story! Great idea! What I love most is these are real life people like me sharing their real experiences, which are more inspiring than the stories made up in many how to books! Love it!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Wave of Transformation! By Amazon Customer What a wave of transformation! Each person's story is a powerful testament to her or his individual transformation. I was amazed that despite the varying (often horrible) circumstances each person encountered in life, how similar many of their experiences were in connecting to their Source (or whatever name may have been used) and their own strength. Very inspiring. Kara Stoltenberg drilled into my head, "YOU ARE VALUABLE," and, "You are the only one who can bring exactly what you have to the world." This book is a wake-up call to follow my soul's purpose and continue on my journey. If you are looking for inspiration from a collection of amazing individuals, read this book!

A memoir of my childhood growing up in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn, NY where many Sicilian immigrants had settled. The memoir was written for the purpose of introducing my four grandchildren to the generations of family that came before them. I took them on a journey that spanned 140 years in order for them to gain a sense of the many people they had descended from. I clearly explain what their every day life was like as well as the philosophies and principles they lived by. The colorful family characters come alive as we move from decade to decade.

Successful Assemilation from Sicily to America By Joseph Canepa Back when large families got together around the holidays, there was much food and much laughter. The laughter came mainly from stories of unusual family incidents which all though funny. Joann Cosenza describes this world. Her family lives in cold water flats in Brooklyn. She tells one story about her Sicilian American mother. The lady wanted to be more American and bought a turkey for Thanksgiving. She took a huge butcher knife and, as she would with a chicken, craved the turkey into pieces. She then added olive oil, oregano and bake all the pieces. Everybody must have laughed for year later at the break from the traditional way of roasting a turkey.Cosenza's book is more than just some stories. She outlines the successful assimilation of a Sicilian family into American life. Her Beneficiaries of Her Soul are two daughters and four grandchildren. Six people who made the world better.True to legendary Sicilian subtlety and revenge, Cosenza mentions her divorced husband but neglects to mention his name. This is a well written book, a quick read, that makes a lot of sense from a keen observer of life..

Eighteen-year-old Lady Amelia Chesterfield’s willfulness has caused great consternation for her parents over the years, but they are nonetheless taken aback by her appalling and indecent response to their attempts to marry her to a man of their choosing. The scandal which ensues as a result of Amelia’s wanton behavior seems certain to complete the ruin of her family’s already tattered reputation, and thus it comes as a shock to the entire household when Garrett Darmley, the heir to the richest estate in the region, makes his own offer of marriage to Amelia. Garrett is no fool, and he has his own reasons for his proposal. He has long known that he wants and needs a woman who can be not only his wife, but his little girl as well, and Amelia will fill that role perfectly. Her rebellious nature will afford him plenty of opportunities to bare her bottom and spank her soundly before taking her in his arms to comfort her, and if she persists in her defiance his young bride will soon discover that there are punishments which are far more painful and embarrassing than a mere spanking. Though her new husband’s treatment of her is shocking at first, as Amelia settles into her new life as his little girl she finds herself feeling loved and accepted in a way she never dreamed of before. His total command of her body soon leaves her yearning for his touch, and as his masterful lovemaking brings her to one quivering, blushing climax after another, her passion for him burns hotter every day. But when enemies within Garrett’s own household seek to harm Amelia, will the scandal and disgrace she hoped to leave behind return to plague her once again? Publisher’s Note: His Lordship’s Little Bride is an erotic romance novel that includes spankings, sexual scenes, age play, anal play, elements of medical play, and more. Vela Lady Amelia Chesterfield, unrestrained, uncontrollable and uninhibited and the scandal that has just occurred has her family reeling! Her unceremoniously bedding below her station has her parents scrabbling. Enter the most eligible handsome scoundrel in the country, and being the richest also helps, but it's the hungry look that has you wanting to bend to his will. Garrett Darmley has his own skeletons in his closet(as in get a chair type and wedge it shut). He wants an unconventional marriage, he wants a little and a ward and a wife...and perhaps down the road..well. Amelia never had love and she never had caring but this man will bring to her life love ,family and every emotion she has never felt. Cherished and adored, but when an outside source threatens it all, it's up to the most unlikely person to help. Ava Sinclair continues her seduction, her readers are captivated with Victorian erotica unsurpassed bounds and its a delightful read. Each of her books are unique but this one has what I call an escape quality. To literally take you into the story, you live in the book it's draws you in and you fall hard for the characters. Once again a fascinating, fabulous read by a truly gifted author! Bravo Ava Sinclair!

Amelia was a rebellious girl, with uncaring and judgmental parents. Garrett was a dominant man, who was raised in an unconventional household. He was also into age play and desperately wanted his own little one. The book contained enemas, little girl clothes, a kind but firm nanny, spicy sex, oral sex, anal sex, a sex toy and few mild spankings with hands and a slipper. The characters were ok. Amelia was needy and clingy, due to her neglectful parents. Garrett was determined to have his own way, but he seemed to care about Amelia.

All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.***I thoroughly enjoyed this latest release from Ava Sinclair which centers around Lady Amelia and Garrett Darmley. To understand their relationship, it is important to know their history growing up which Ms. Sinclair does an excellent job of developing the secondary characters in our story.Amelia resents the continued efforts of her parents trying to marry her off, so as a last resort she commits a very foolish act which ultimately puts her fate in the hands of Garrett. Due to his parents unusual marriage as he was growing up, Garrett has developed certain sexual tastes and needs that only certain women would cater to, but in Amelia he sees an opportunity to mold a woman into just what he wants and likes in a bed partner.Amelia's willfulness and spirit attract him like a moth to a flame, so he makes the decision to marry her and our journey begins. Amelia has no idea of the sexual education that awaits her, but Garrett enjoys the role of being a husband/daddy and training Amelia to be his "little" using various methods that are smokin' HOT!! Plus, there is additional intrigue and suspense afoot in the Darmley household that Amelia ultimately finds herself involved with.If you are a fan of Ava Sinclair's books and this genre of erotica like I am, then "His Lordship's Bride" is one story you don't want to miss! I highly recommend this book because Ms. Sinclair has a natural flair for writing age play erotica with such enthusiasm that you really don't ever want the story to end!!

For the last half century, life has changed rapidly in America, and this is not just about a technology shift the talking heads have been sermonizing about for decades. Not test scores. Not exactly obesity. No, this is America that was once first in steel, nuclear power, and education downshifting to become first in imports, financial engineering, colorful slide presentations, and spreadsheets. Here’s the first part of a recollection of things gone right and wrong, an expose from a period when America could routinely nuke places around the world with virtual impunity, to an era where we fear that our cars are warming the planet, or that a single pipeline from Canada might unleash global havoc. This volume is part odyssey, part observation. Later, a bumpy ride of where some of the blame belongs for what went wrong, and why it could (I hope) all turn out right in the end. Not so much a “How-To”, more like a map of “How-Not-To”.
