This thought-provoking study by historian Monique Laney focuses on the U.S. government–assisted integration of German rocket specialists and their families into a small southern community soon after World War II. In 1950, Wernher von Braun and his team of rocket experts relocated to Huntsville, Alabama, a town that would celebrate the team, despite their essential role in the recent Nazi war effort, for their contributions to the U.S. Army missile program and later to NASA’s space program. Based on oral histories, provided by members of the African American and Jewish communities, and  by the rocketeers’ families, co-workers, friends, and neighbors, Laney’s book demonstrates how the histories of German Nazism and Jim Crow in the American South intertwine in narratives about the past. This is a critical reassessment of a singular time that links the Cold War, the Space Race, and the Civil Rights era while addressing important issues of transnational science and technology, and asking Americans to consider their country’s own history of racism when reflecting on the Nazi past.

German Rocketeers in the Heart of Dixie: Making Sense of the Nazi Past during the Civil Rights Era, by Monique Laney

Review “Laney, a daughter of Alabama and Germany, has produced an insightful, nuanced study of a unique historical phenomenon: the moral and cognitive dissonance that ensues when former agents of the Third Reich are transplanted to a segregated southern community and charged with winning the Cold War space race.”—Diane McWhorter, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Carry Me Home (Diane McWhorter)“Much has been written about the German-American rocket engineers led by Wernher von Braun. But Monique Laney’s important, original and well-written book opens a new dimension: how they were integrated into Huntsville during the Civil Rights era and what that tells us about how that city processed, or did not process, their Nazi past while grappling with Alabama’s  shifting racial climate. Her work makes especially noteworthy contributions to history of “transnational memory,” but it will also intrigue a wide variety of readers and scholars interested in space history, the history of technology, Southern history, immigration, social history and American Studies.”—Michael J. Neufeld, author of Von Braun (Michael J. Neufeld)“That the engineers who helped lift the United States into outer space were complicit in the cruelty of the Third Reich is the paradox at the heart of Monique Laney’s fascinating book. Her moral concern drives a superb work of ethnography as well as history.”—Stephen J. Whitfield, Brandeis University (Stephen J. Whitfield)“This book explains how the Huntsville community wrestled with historical memory, denying, rationalizing, or confirming past atrocities for self-preservation, civic boosterism, or ethnic identity.”—Wayne Flynt, author of Alabama in the Twentieth Century (Wayne Flynt)“A sparkling migration history, Laney’s rich ensemble of oral histories and thoughtful analysis recreates the complexities of life and labor in the post-war Southern community where rocket experts sought to reconcile identities past and present.”—Alan Kraut, author of Silent Travelers (Alan Kraut)“What makes this book so important is the access to oral history and personal materials from the Huntsville German community. A tremendously solid piece of scholarship.”—James R. Hansen, Auburn University (James R. Hansen)“Laney's perceptive analysis examines the shared basis for Nazi rocket scientists and Jim Crow townspeople to form a cosy community, expanding the local to a national technology narrative.”—Dirk Hoerder, Arizona State University (Dirk Hoerder)“This richly documented study of postwar migration and memory illuminates the history of a town integrated and divided under the long shadows of Nazism and racism.”—Alexander Freund, University of Winnipeg (Alexander Freund)“In 1950, more than 100 German rocket experts, many with a Nazi past, settled in Huntsville, Alabama. Reinventing themselves and their families in the Jim Crow-era American South, they transformed a backwater town into ‘Rocket City, USA’. Ten years later, these space personae had fully integrated and become highly admired citizens, with Cold War techno-celebrity Wernher von Braun as the town’s national and international figurehead. Based on more than 70 oral history interviews, Monique Laney’s study analyzes the making and dismantling of a community whose memories transcended national borders. Located at the intersection of migration history, memory studies and space history, German Rocketeers in the Heart of Dixie is fascinating, rich and timely.”—Alexander C.T. Geppert, New York University (Alexander C.T. Geppert)“This study is a call for Americans to be honest about confronting their past in all its complexity and to understand the dangers of their failure to do so.”—Choice (Choice)Winner of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics 2016 Gardner-Lasser Aerospace History Literature Award. (Gardner-Lasser Aerospace History Literature Award American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics 2015-11-05)Won honorable mention for the Deep South Book Award sponsored by the Frances S. Summersell Center. (Deep South Book Prize Francis S. Summersell Center 2016-05-25)

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating raw historical data, no clear answers By Aaron C. Brown On the plus side, this book is an in-depth investigation of a tremendously interesting historical juxtaposition that weaves together some of the most important threads in mid-20th century history. On the negative side, while the author is able to compile some fascinating observations, she is not able to build any sort of larger meaning from the account. The other good news/bad news is the author is a careful researcher and fine writer, with dual qualifications (German and Alabamian) to investigate and understand this story; but she adapted it from her PhD dissertation and left in some turgid theoretical stuff that will not endear her to general readers. There are three knocks on the German rocket scientists who followed Wernher von Braun from building anti-civilian missiles for the Nazis, to building anti-civilian missiles for the US, to building the rockets that took us to the moon. I merely list these without comment, I have no idea what kind of choices I would have made under the conditions they faced in life. First is that some seem to have been early and enthusiastic Nazis. Second is that some seem to have personal involvement with horrors, primarily mistreatment of slave laborers but also denouncing and persecuting of Jewish colleagues and other crimes. Finally, it's morally dubious enough to use extreme professional skills to kill innocent civilians for one regime, if when that regime falls you do the same for the victors, people have a right to suspect you'll kill for anyone willing to pay you (as Tom Lehrer put it, "'In German oder English I know how to count down, und I'm learning Chinese,' says Wernher von Braun.")The author probes the attitudes of both the rocketeers and local Alabamians to these issues, a little on the first, a lot on the second and only briefly on the third. Unfortunately, she is only able to get superficial reactions. This is interesting in itself, even fifty years and more later, it's hard to have deep conversations with survivors of the era about such issues. A philosopher or lawyer would probe more deeply. If someone claims to have been forced into an evil action, that means the person doing the forcing was doubly evil: both causing evil and forcing another to participate. So the person using this argument should point to some greater sinner, either individual or systemic. After all, some really, really bad stuff happened, and it's impossible that no one and nothing is to blame. Without these kinds of hard follow-up questions, we don't learn much about either the history or morality, only that almost everyone prefers not to insist on clear answers.Nevertheless, this material is very interesting. We have plenty of intense interrogations over issues like these, but far less material of people voluntarily discussing them at a distance in time such that there seem to be few likely consequences of admissions. The author made attempts to get opinions from black and Jewish Alabamians, but they seem to have little interest either way (younger Jewish people who were not adults during the period have clearer positions, but they don't seem to be much different from similar people in other places). It's hard to know if this is genuine uninterest, or if the author failed to gain their trust.Another issue is the complicity of US authorities in covering up some Nazi crimes in order to exploit scientific talent; and arguably reversing course in the 1980s and using pressure tactics and dubious evidence to harass the same people in retirement. Again, I merely list the charges, I'm not taking sides in these complex issues (okay, I guess I am, I'm against government lying, and two wrongs don't make a right, but some of the scientists involved were pretty unsavory, even by their own accounts). Here the author goes a bit off the deep end, comparing letting someone into the US to work and then expelling them when they were no longer useful to working innocent people to death in slave labor camps. She does not suggest that these are morally equivalent, merely that they have parallel elements, but I think is a false and offensive analogy.Another misdirected analogy that is more central to the book is Nazi war crimes to both black slavery and Jim Crow laws in the South. Slavery is not comparable, because virtually no one living in Alabama at the time had ever participated in it, you can't compare some historical cultural guilt with personal war crimes. Jim Crow laws were fading at the time the rocketeers moved in (racism, of course, was still alive and well), but for the vast majority of the population these crimes were simply not comparable to Nazi horrors. There were certainly people in Alabama who had participated in lynchings, or blew up churches with people inside, or acquitted people who lynched or blew up churches, but throughout history there were about 3,500 black people lynched in the US, versus 11 million murdered by the Nazis (not counting war deaths or indirect deaths), mostly in two years. Without defending lynchings, there is a difference between choosing to live in a society where some people get lynched, versus building WMDs to defend a regime with a massive network of death camps. These excursions into extreme moral equivalence do not detract from the interest of the book. Despite the author's writing skill, the book is not a lot of fun to read, partly due to occasionally intrusive theory and partly due to the amorphous material. But it contains a wealth of interesting data about a fascinating cast of characters in a unique time and place. It will enrich your thinking, without pushing it in any particular direction.

"Before the world heard of KISS, the New York Dolls, Marilyn Manson, or Ozzy Osbourne, there was Alice Cooper, the original shock-rock band." -Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

As teenagers in Phoenix, Dennis Dunaway, bassist and co-songwriter for the Alice Cooper group, and lead singer Vince Furnier (who would later change his name to Alice Cooper) formed a hard-knuckles band that played prisons, cowboy bars, and teens clubs. Their wild, impossible journey took them from Hollywood to the ferocious Detroit music scene, and along the way they discovered the utterly original performance style and look that would make them the stuff of legend.

Speaking out for the first time about his adventures in the Alice Cooper group, Dunaway reveals a band that was obsessed with topping themselves, with their increasingly outlandish shows and ever-blackening reputation. Dunaway takes readers into back rooms, behind brainstorming sessions, and into the most exclusive parties of the 1970s, revealing the talent, drama, and characters that drove two teenagers to create what would become America's highest-grossing act.

From struggling for recognition to topping the charts with a string of hits including "I'm Eighteen," "School's Out," and "No More Mr. Nice Guy," the Alice Cooper group was entertaining, outrageous, and one of a kind.Snakes! Guillotines! Electric Chairs! is a riveting account of the band's creation in the '60s, their strange glory in the '70s, and the legendary characters they met along the way.

Snakes! Guillotines! Electric Chairs!: My Adventures in The Alice Cooper Group, by Dennis Dunaway, Chris Hodenfield

Review

“I still consider Dennis Dunaway to be one of my best friends. Dennis is one of the few true surrealists that I've ever met….This book carries on in Dennis' own private surrealistic world.” ―Alice Cooper

“If you think you've heard all the Alice Cooper stories, think again...Though Alice was the iconic face of the band, Dunaway was the brains behind many of their best-known songs...It's safe to say that, without Dunaway, the group's now-legendary look and sound would have been vastly different. There might not even have been an Alice Cooper.” ―Village Voice

“Dennis vividly details in the first person how the Alice cooperative of five endearingly misfit pioneering adolescents put the Woodstock generation to rest.” ―Huffington Post

“A wonderfully detailed memoir” ―Connecticut Post

“An informative, entertaining, and surprisingly cheerful work. The pacing is fast, the chronology is tight, and the balance of personal, professional, and cultural details is spot on... Dunaway's upbeat tone and flair for storytelling lift this work a step above the average musical memoir” ―Library Journal

“A visit to the magical, blood-spattered world of the Alice Cooper Group, courtesy of Dunaway, the band's bassist, co-songwriter and "theatrical conceptionalist."... the book is more than just an homage to his old friend; it's a love letter to an era... An affectionate, sharp-eyed memoir.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“Dennis tells the story from the inside out with wit and wisdom and adds brilliantly to the Alice Cooper Group mythos. There may be many versions of this story, but Dennis' is one of the most colorful, insightful and entertaining!” ―Bob Ezrin, record producer

“Dennis Dunaway's book brought me right back to those days in Laurel Canyon. So many times, people ask me ‘what was it like in the 60's?' I give them a blank stare and say ‘if you can remember it, you weren't there' or ‘uh, I forget,' or ‘it was great'…Well now I'll just tell them to read Dennis' book.” ―Robby Krieger, song-writer and guitarist for the Doors.

“The fact that it historically chronicles one of the greatest hard rock bands of all time is just icing on the cake” ―Classic Rock Revisited

“For a fan of the Alice Cooper band, as I have been since my adolescence in the 1970s, Cooper bassist Dennis Dunaway's first-hand account of the group's humble beginnings, heady triumphs and arguably inevitable implosion is gripping stuff.” ―Michael J. Fox, New York Times bestselling author of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Future

“Steve Martin once said ‘Those French have a different word for everything.'--Dennis has a different view of everything, so he's the ideal chap to spend a night out with--and you have him for a whole book!!” ―Ian Hunter

“A key player in the Alice Cooper sound, Dennis Dunaway propelled the band with his swirling-driving bass, and he now takes us backstage with an all-access pass to the Hall of Fame band that inspired us to make friends in the danger zone.” ―Greg Harris, President & CEO, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame + Museum

“From inside the inner circle of the Alice Cooper band, bass guitar wizard Dennis Dunaway gives his refreshingly unique perspective telling the bands amazing story. Dennis chronicles his journey in vivid detail from an early 1960's high school band called the "Earwigs" transforming into "Alice Cooper," then in the 1970's becoming the most notorious band on in the world. A must read for every Alice Cooper fan!” ―Neal Smith, song-writer and drummer for Alice Cooper

“Lived it, lost it, read it and loved it to death!” ―Michael Bruce, founding member, Alice Cooper Group

“A touching portrait. Poignant, funny, sad and most of all, true!” ―Joe Greenberg Co-Manager of Alice Cooper

“The original Alice Cooper Band were one of the all-time greats in what I consider the golden era of classic rock, and helped pave the way for all the arena rock bands that followed in their wake. As a kid I spent countless hours listening to their records and staring at the pictures on the sleeves, pondering the menacing gang dressed up in glitter drag, in the pre-internet days when your favorite bands were still a mystery. Dennis Dunaway had a front row seat to all the craziness, and lucky for us, came out the other side with his memories intact.” ―Chris Shiflett, Foo Fighters

“Dennis Dunaway stands out as one of the most progressive bassist of the time. His unique sonic vision and absolute brotherhood connection to Glen, Michael, Alice and Neal created a raw, unpretentious, by the seat of your pants sound that captivated and inspired. And what is equally amazing is Dennis's absolutely clear and detailed recollection and articulation of the journey they took.” ―Richard McDonald, Vice President of the Fender Musical Corp.

“The multi-faceted autobiography, penned with former Rolling Stone staffer Chris Hodenfield, appeals not only to hard core Alice Cooper fans like myself, but to readers with a general interest in the "rock biography" genre, as well as those who enjoy immersing themselves in the twists and turns of a whole-hearted adventure and an enduring love story set primarily in the heady music scene of the 1960s and '70s.” ―The Newcastle Herald (Australia)

“An informative, entertaining, and surprisingly cheerful work. The pacing is fast, the chronology is tight, and the balance of personal, professional, and cultural details is spot-on. ... Dunaway's update tone and flair for storytelling lift this work a step above the average musical memoir. Recommended for music historians, children of the 1970s, and, of course, Cooper fans.” ―Library Journal

Other than Alice's own "Golf Monster" book I don't believe there has been another "insider" memoir published. So, what is Dennis Dunaway's, the bass player, take on his old band? Well, this is a loving, though not uncritical, look back at the four friends he made in high school and the long, hard road to stardom. Essentially, the Alice Cooper the group began in Phoenix, made its way to LA and then Detroit and along the way recorded a truly unique catalog of songs, When they split, a harrowing story in itself, they were on top of the rock world. In those ten -plus years was poverty, booze, drugs and girls; they all loved every minute of it. The book ends when Alice the singer decided to go solo and hire studio musicians in 1975. For me the most telling passage in this very readable book comes on page 174: "I felt strongly that mystery [of the Alice persona] was a powerful tool. The band capitalized on its effectiveness for about a year. Then,... little by little, through interviews with our garrulous singer and Alice's sudden interest in golf and schmoozing with the old-timers, it eroded. Years later, I viewed Alice's appearance on 'Hollywood Squares' as the final blow." Indeed. As a huge fan of the group at the time, I was very interested in the details of the stories Dunaway had to tell of their life on the road. I wish there had been more details about the recording of the seven LP's, though; instead we do get some insights but really the book is about the glories of the rock'n'roll lifestyle and the big family that the group became to him. Great stuff, but a bit of a disappointment. The guys themelves all seemed like decent fellas. Be warned, though, the passages about the long, inevitable demise of guitarist Glen Buxton from a lifetime of drinking and drug abuse is very, very sad. We currently live in Phoenix, and we see Alice Cooper a lot on TV and radio in interviews and on ads. He always comes off as a pretty likeable guy and I was relieved to see him come off that same way in this book. Clearly there is a friendship that has lasted for decades and that alone is always worth reading about.Strongly Recommended.

By gOnZoBiTcH1 I opened my record store at the tender age of 22, in 1982, and have been asked thru the years, including just last week, what is my greatest regret at not having the chance to see live. My often surprising answer (to most everyone but my closest friends) is: the Original Alice Cooper Group. Not The Beatles, not Jimi, not Jim nor Janis. Dennis Dunaway & crew has always been my answer without hesitation. My life changed forever the day I heard the "Love It To Death" album. I played it seven times in a row, gladly jumping up to flip over that flat, black & circular platter of pleasure! This music was like Nothing I had ever heard before. It was dark, scary, thrilling & intriguing. Absolutely mind-blowing for this 7th grader. Next up, my next door neighbor gets a new Boss Mustang, and asks if I wanna take a ride? Sure! No cooler car on the road! However, when he slams the new Alice Cooper "Killer" 8 Track cartridge into the deck, I forgot all about the car, and it's all about the music slamming me back into my bucket seat! S***! These guys got even Better! So I get that into the collection, and gotta have more. I buy "Easy Action" & "Pretties For You", and while a little baffled at first, I found plenty of music on both that I play to this day. Not so much my Dad, who's immortal words still ring in my ears: "You can have $5.00 for ANYTHING but an Alice Cooper record!" (BTW, Thanks, Mom, for keys to the car while Dad was in sporting goods at Meijers Thrifty Acres!) "School's Out" & "Billion Dollar Babies" drop. More slices of Heaven & impending Hell. But, I sense some shift in the music, pre-internet information age, that I don't understand in BDB & "Muscle of Love". Then, my 3rd concert I go see my musical hero, Alice Cooper, on his "Welcome To My Nightmare" Tour. Great show, fantastic musicians, but when they play the Classics, it just doesn't come across right. I've seen Alice 15 times, but have never seen the music played "properly". Obviously, the Original band is what's missing.Dennis Dunaway's new book now gives me the perspective of what happened & why. I love it that Dennis doesn't take wild potshots at Alice or the other band members. He just tells it straight up, which is pretty refreshing! I certainly hope he understands he's Still a huge musical Hero in many a fan's mind. My most memorable trip to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame was getting to see his lime green mirrored bass guitar. If only I could have seen it slung over his lanky frame, with his trademark leg kick, while performing "Public Animal # 9".....but this book gets me as close to backstage with my favorite band on the planet as I'll ever get, so, well done, Mr. Dunaway!

What a performance! I never realized how good some of their songs and lyrics were. So then I became curious about the band and read a bit about them. Turns out much of that was erroneous. These were disciplined musicians who worked hard on their craft and sweated to get there.Of course each person is going to see it their way, but I tend to believe this guy has the straight dope. A severe bout with Chrohn's disease and urging from his daughters pushed him into telling his story. And it's a good one! Thanks for sharing, and I hope you are better. If you want to read about sex, drugs and rock and roll, it's in here. But there's plenty of good info on how they developed their musical style, songwriting and how the band grew and handled the pressures of fame. That was the interesting part to me.Lesson learned: don't just agree as friends, get it in writing. Show Biz is a harsh mistress.

By krissyl "The Best of the Empty Nest Volume 2" is a charming collection of short articles from Corwin-Adams's Ohio newspaper column of the same name. I absolutely loved the humorous articles, which covered such diverse topics as square dancing, recreational walking (volkssporting), holidays, class reunions, and best of all, dog rescue. As a dog lover, I adore animal stories with happy endings!"Seven is My Lucky Number" was my favorite segment; Corwin-Adams writes about Rags, renamed Braggs, the seventh cocker spaniel that she and her husband rescued. It was such a touching story, infused with the author's trademark vivid descriptions, compassion, and optimism. I also loved "Does Turning 55 Make Me Old?" This piece goes over many of the advantages of 55 in a cute and playful way, and I was giggling throughout. If you're looking for a fun and different read that's like a chat with an old friend, this one is it!

But, the MC's language was over the top. Almost every other word he spoke, he used F''''. I mean, it was really over done. To the point where you couldn't even enjoy the story. He also used the C''' word to describe Olivia. He acted and sounded like trash, some low life you would expect to see in a seedy bar. (Only rich). He's that nasty. This could have been a nice romance, but the language, the MC's personality, well I really couldn't give this more then 2 stars. Not my idea of a billionaire romance.

By Brenda Does anyone need to use f!'k over 500 times in one short book..yes I had them counted..really!!!!, and more than once in a sentence it was pathetic. Don't get me started on the grammar worst I have seen..many of the errors were British English not American which is where I believe the author is from. Fix the errors and change the wording and you have good story..till then good luck because you will really stumble on the story.

Introduction

If you can find a path with no obstacles, it probably doesn’t lead anywhere. —FRANK A. CLARK December 1, 1999 Ojai, California As I lifted the cup of tea to my nose, inhaling the steamy, sweet scent, anticipating my first sip, I saw Kevin, the utility man, tiptoeing into the yard through the side gate like a cat burglar. Looking over the rim of my cup, through the faint waves of circling steam, I fixed my gaze on him. He was so focused on reaching our fuse box that he didn’t see me sitting only a dozen feet away on the front porch steps, bundled up in an old red Indian blanket, warming my face in the distant morning sun. Quietly putting the cup down on the weathered porch, I watched as he neared the back of the house. Standing as quickly as I could without setting off a symphony of creaks in the old wooden steps, I balanced my enormously pregnant belly and stepped onto the dead grass, making my way over to where Kevin was about to close off the valve with his wrench, which would leave me without precious fuel to heat my one-room cabin or cook my daily lentils, rice, and tea. I cornered him and yelled, “Hey!” He jumped and almost dropped the tool. He looked over at me, raising his shoulders to his ears, grimacing as if he thought I would hit him. “If you do that, my baby and I will freeze to death and you’ll have to sleep at night knowing what you did!” I pointed at my nine-month pregnant belly for good measure. He looked at me sideways. It wasn’t the first time we had met and wouldn’t be our last. I smiled nervously, feeling bad to have scared him. “In all seriousness, Kevin, you know I am going to pay the bill, so why come out here and do this to me?” I smiled again, trying to be charming. “It’s four months past due,” he pleaded. “You’re going to get me fired!” “Look,” I said, “I’m about to give birth, then I can get a job. Can you just wait for a couple of weeks, tell your boss I have a scary dog or something? Anything?” He looked at me for a few hard beats before dropping his shoulders. “You’re gonna have to do something, you know. The county has programs . . .” I knew. I was about to have a kid and my only assets were a rusted-out, thirty-year-old car with no driver’s window and perpetually less than ten bucks in my bank account. How does one go about “doing something” when there is so much surviving to do? “People don’t hire pregnant ladies, you know,” I told him, squinting back my tears. He shook his head and stomped back up the driveway and onto the worn-out canyon road, thankfully without cutting off our power. Somewhere along the line, God and I had gotten our wires crossed. I blamed my impulsive nature and sometimes believed that my destiny had come and gone already. I felt like I had missed my boat. I was a broke, pregnant twenty-four-year-old college dropout, fending off a kindly utility man. I headed back to the front porch feeling seasick. To steady myself, I grabbed my anchor, that simple cup of tea. I had been an honors student, a full scholarship recipient, a girl with so much “promise.” Then I followed one too many yearnings in my Gypsy blood and took off. I dropped out of college, headed to Peru, studied herbal medicine, got married and divorced, all the while earning my keep by making healing herbal concoctions and reading palms like my Roma Gypsy family in the Ukraine once had. This hadn’t been my plan, having a baby on my own at twenty-four. I was heartbroken over the circumstance. I must have sat there for a long time, because when I took another sip of tea, it was ice-cold. I begged out loud, “God, you have to help me here! Tell me what to do!” Silence. After a few beats, the odd answer that entered my mind as I looked out at the mountains was two mismatched words, “Gypsy . . .” and then “tea.” “Seriously!?” I yelled, looking into my teacup as if God presided in there. I thought my mind was playing tricks on me. After all, I was a Gypsy girl drinking tea, so the idea had to have come from my desperate mind, not from the Almighty. But the idea of taking my heritage, my deep love of botanicals, and my passion for crafting healing gifts became more than just a momentary impulse. It became motivation to build something beautiful that mattered in the world. Sage, my beautiful baby boy, was born with a life-threatening kidney defect, and we spent weeks in hospital waiting rooms and surgery centers. In between prayers and tears, I’d close my eyes to escape the fear of potentially losing my precious child. My mind conjured visions of children laughing as their moms sipped from colorful teacups and other women danced around them in brightly hued costumes. Beautiful Gypsy women proudly displayed their art, handmade jewelry, and palm-reading wisdom with kind smiles across their faces. There were cups of tea everywhere, filled with potions that I had blended from inspirations of famous perfumes I loved—floral flavors made for spiritual healing. These potions would soothe mothers’ worries, inspire love in lonely people, encourage girls’ ambitions, and calm everyone’s nerves, bringing them together in a sort of tea communion. It was all there in my mind’s seeking eye. These images of Gypsy-themed tea parties grew into hope. A coping method, a promise, a dream—tea became all of those things to me.

By Summers McKay As an entrepreneur, a business school teacher, a student, and a mentor - I am constantly looking for ways to tell stories that will inspire my students and myself to achieve the goals we imagine. I am always seeking unique and powerful ways to advance personal change for all those around me. I have read hundreds of business books, motivational books, and listened to thousands more on pod casts and simply put, THIS book, THIS author, THIS story is one of the most beautiful, compelling and brilliant books I have ever read. It is the kind of book that whisks you away into imagination, creation, sensory indulgent adventure and demands your attention to the things you most want out of life. The book, intended to be like enjoying a cup of tea daily, was a perfect beach weekend escape read that I couldn't put down. After devouring the entire book in just two days, I was ready to then start sipping, reflecting and keeping it by my bedside to remind myself each morning to follow some of the mantras and remember some of Zhena Muzyka's most salient advice. Stay Positive "The most successful people have a knack for "plucking the positive". They seek out sunshine, the choicest leaves of the plants. They look for solutions, daring to believe life is a friendly endeavor and that failure offers the chance to grow." and Collaborate with people smarter than you! "Seeking out brilliant people to collaborate with is a brilliant way to ensure your average gets better every single day. Whenever you feel stuck, pick up the phone and start collaborating with a trusted friend or colleague." - I highly recommend this book and hope you cherish it, as much as I have. - Summers McKay, Program Director - UCLA Anderson EDGE and Publisher, Caution Curves Ahead Media

Inspiring and engaging -- a book every entrepreneur should read By Lisa Braithwaite, Public Speaking Coach and Trainer I've been a fan of Zhena and her teas for years now, and having experienced her bright smile and energetic glow, I've always assumed that she had some sort of charmed life that is completely out of reach for a normal human like me. Reading the details of her story was a real eye-opener, and once again I'm reminded that life is what we make it.Her writing is evocative and expressive, taking the reader on a journey from desperation to hope to elation, and everything in between. But if Zhena's story of persistence and grit isn't enough, you also get lessons, exercises, and actionable tools that come from her experiences. And just the descriptions of the flavors and scents that she blended into her teas will instantly transport you to another world. Most of all, this is a book that teaches us that we must believe, take action, and persevere, and actually shows us how. My favorite quote: "I had gone from making $10 an hour working for someone else to $7.50 working for myself." Every entrepreneur will relate to Zhena's experiences. I feel re-energized from reading her book, and am ready to make new leaps forward with her encouragement!

Zhena tells a good yarn and has you sitting forward in your seat in suspense for much of it. Can a single woman, with a desperately sick child with insurmountable hospital expenses, dream up, run and make a success of organic and fair trade tea? Can she face the competition who have millions of dollars and MBA's head on and expect to come out as a winner? Can single women with ideals really make their ideals and businesses come to life and carve out their place in world that is cutthroat? Well if these are the questions then this book answers with resounding Yes, Yes Yes!To a person who likes an autobiography this is a masterpiece. To the spiritual person, this is a gem. To the visionary, this is a compelling read from a woman that is not only gifted in business but as a writer also. It's a great story, from a deeply spiritual and real individual. Zhena open up the sacred parts of her life honestly with transparency in a raw and fascinating way. Join her as she speaks about life, struggles, fears and success in a really down to earth way. As a writer myself, I found my literary skills not up to hers, but was proud of the job she had done with her words on a page. It was one of those books that you are sad when it ends.I pray for her books success and her continuing success as a business woman. I send my love to her and all the workers in the tea fields that labor to make her tea leaves. With LoveMatthew Robert PayneAuthor of four books in including His Redeeming Love: A Memoir
