What’s it like to travel at more than 850 MPH, riding in a supersonic T-38 twin turbojet engine airplane? What happens when the space station toilet breaks? How do astronauts “take out the trash” on a spacewalk, tightly encapsulated in a space suit with just a few layers of fabric and Kevlar between them and the unforgiving vacuum of outer space?

The Ordinary Spaceman puts you in the flight suit of U.S. astronaut Clayton C. Anderson and takes you on the journey of this small-town boy from Nebraska who spent 167 days living and working on the International Space Station, including more than forty hours of space walks. Having applied to NASA fifteen times over fifteen years to become an astronaut before his ultimate selection, Anderson offers a unique perspective on his life as a veteran space flier, one characterized by humility and perseverance.

From the application process to launch aboard the space shuttle Atlantis, from serving as a family escort for the ill-fated Columbia crew in 2003 to his own daily struggles—family separation, competitive battles to win coveted flight assignments, the stress of a highly visible job, and the ever-present risk of having to make the ultimate sacrifice—Anderson shares the full range of his experiences. With a mix of levity and gravitas, Anderson gives an authentic view of the highs and the lows, the triumphs and the tragedies of life as a NASA astronaut.

A candid look at becoming and being an astronaut By Robert Frost The Ordinary Spaceman: From Boyhood Dreams to Astronaut, a book written by Astronaut Clayton Anderson is an entertaining and open look at his experiences becoming and being an astronaut. Clay’s journey to becoming an astronaut is a lesson in perseverance; he applied fifteen times before he was accepted. After his training, he flew two space missions. He was onboard the International Space Station (ISS) from June-November of 2007 and then visited the ISS again, in 2010, as part of a 15 day Space Shuttle mission.Full disclosure, I know Clay. His class of Astronaut Candidates (AsCans), the 1998 class, was the first AsCan group I taught. That was a wonderful experience that made me feel a small sense of ownership for every member of that class. I taught Clay, again, during his ISS training, and accompanied him to Germany for training on the European supply vehicle called the ATV. Clay is very personable. I can’t recall ever passing him in the hallway without him stopping to shake hands and ask how I was doing. His distinct voice and personality project off of the pages of the book. Reading the book felt like sitting across the table from Clay and allowing him to regale me with his stories as we drank a few beers. There’s not a lot of artifice with Clay. He is rambunctious and candid and so is his book. In the book, he talks about how that candor got him into trouble a few times. He also describes experiences that most people would be uncomfortable talking about, such as a humiliating first bowel movement after returning to Earth and a humbling apology to the ground team after losing his temper. The willingness to talk about the low points balances nicely with the obligatory tellings of the high points. It creates a nice round picture that I think will leave readers feeling they have a better understanding of what it really is like to be an astronaut.Clay talks about many fascinating and yet little discussed parts of the job, from the selection process, to winter survival training, to the politics of high performance organizations, to the stresses of being away from family. He also describes, vividly, the intense and unique experiences of a space shuttle launch, a spacewalk, and returning to gravity after five months of weightlessness. If I have a complaint, it’s that I know he left out some stories.

By Kate Doolan Clayton Anderson may not be a household name astronaut, but he must be one of the most persistent ones. It took him fifteen tries to be selected as an astronaut. In his just released memoir, Clay(disclaimer, we are duelling humour acquaintances on Twitter as well as sharing a bizarre relationship with a former NASA STEM mascot) has written one of the most honest astronaut memoirs ever published. Pulling no punches and often naming names, he entertainingly talks about the lows and highs of his astronaut career. More than once, I have burst into laughter of astro antics. And it is just as well, that some of the astronauts are kept anonymous but who was the lady who flashed her assets to get into a bar in New Orleans during a "business" trip there?Clay's refreshing honesty may have cut short his astronaut career but maybe that is good thing as it has enabled him to produce a frank, well written and above all supremely informative account about being a contemporary astronaut. I highly recommend it to any one who is interested in spaceflight; wants to know more about the subject or just needs a good read...

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. The Ordinary Spaceman is for anyone interested in NASA, spaceflight, or what it takes to be an astronaut. By John A. Read The book begins with a story of Anderson’s first flight in NASA’s T-38 trainer. The chapter is not so much about the flight, as it is about the emotion of doing something extraordinary for the first time. The visuals used in this book are brilliant and poetic: “[the jet] ascends though the atmosphere to pierce cotton like clouds the way a needle drives though a piece of fabric.” Some sections remind me of John Gillespie Magee’s poem High Flight (if you haven’t read that poem, you should google it).The Ordinary Spaceman has, without a doubt, the best description of the astronaut application process during the space shuttle era; right down to Duane Ross and Teresa Gomez, the folks who actually receive and reviews each application. It’s a fascinating look behind the scenes at a process that is viewed by many as a black hole (If you’ve ever submitted an application though USAjobs.com, you can relate). One of the most fun parts of the book is the look inside the lives of the “baby” astronauts. Anderson tells it all as we follow his class of “penguins” through their many bonding adventures. This book takes a somber turn as Anderson describes his role as family escort during the Columbia disaster. The raw emotion of the tragedy is immortalized in the story as experienced from the perspective of the families. The section is well worth the read, but get ready to break out the tissues. In stark contrast to Chris Hadfield’s book “An Astronauts Guide to Life on Earth,” Anderson dives into the challenges with working with a government bureaucracy. Where Hadfield often looks at NASA through rose colored glasses, at times, Anderson’s experience with mission control seemed to occasionally mirror a difficult trip to the DMV. You feel Anderson’s frustration as he struggles to express his feelings with inefficient processes both in space, and on the ground. It’s a side of NASA we don’t usually see from an astronaut’s perspective. The Ordinary Spaceman continues to surprise the reader with underappreciated aspects of spaceflight. From spaceflight’s effect on bodily functions, to the Russian Cognac consumed after a spacewalk, Anderson takes us on a journey through his entire career at NASA. I highly recommend this book to anyone even remotely interested in spaceflight, and I hope this book is an inspiration for generations to come.

Laced with lashings of kink, spanking, and deliciously humiliating scenarios, this Femdom novella features the domestic discipline relationship between Peter and Sylvia. At the age of 41, Peter finds his perfect partner in life. Sylvia is an attractive, professional woman - she is also an assertive woman who needs to take control of her man. Sylvia fulfils Peter's long held desire for discipline and at the outset of their romance makes it quite clear who is in charge. As for Peter, he's a confident good looking guy with his own business, someone who is assertive and efficient in his work, but who learns to relinquish control by embracing his submissive side and his need for a dominant woman in his private life. Their relationship may be unconventional, but it is both satisfying and passionate, underpinned by the exciting dynamics of dominance and submission. Peter gets to experience the sensations of Sylvia's hairbrush, as well as many other implements in her collection, discovering in the process that discipline triggers his sexual arousal. Sylvia makes the rules, and if Peter breaks them, he pays the price on his bottom, reducing him to the status of a well chastised naughty boy... and he loves it! This is a well paced novella with realistic character portrayals and an engagingly unique storyline. It shows how one man's life is transformed by the attentions of a naturally dominant woman.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. should come with donut seat cushions By Sarah Brenner Seriously, this book should come with one of those inflatable donut seat cushions and soothing lotion, because after reading this book your backside is gonna be sore by association!!The Disciplined Husband is a sexy, endearing tale of Peter and Sylvia, told completely from Peter’s point of view. Both are two professionals in a well-established relationship, living near London in a gorgeous Manor by the sea. The plot is very simple; Peter wants to propose, however Sylvia beats him to it and together they plan their wedding. But it’s really a character driven story about their unique relationship together, the experiences they share with their friends, and the interesting people they meet along the way.OK - it’s mostly about the spanking. Holy crap - poor Peter! He doesn’t always mean to mess up. Any yet he always seems to. That’s where Sylvia steps in, bringing on punishments like this:"Bastard spoon!" I growl, shaking my stinging cheeks."Lovely spoon," she croons. "It leaves little stinging pink love bites all over your naughty bottom."At times the pummeling to his “sit spots” can get really brutal…so bad I had to skip a few. But he absolutely loves every minute of it, even when he acts like he doesn’t. And what I like about Sylvia, is that she’s always willing to make sure all of his needs are met too, even if she essentially gives up control. She can be horribly cruel:"Sounds great. Hey - that means we'll be spending our wedding night here along with fifteen house guests!""It does. So I promise to gag you when I spank you so they won't hear you yelling." Sylvia smiles at me, and there is a wicked gleam in her eyes. And other times she submits herself to him. Peter admittedly loves his life with Sylvia whether he’s physically able to sit down for dinner or not, and he wouldn’t have it any other way. Neither would Sylvia, who clearly cares for him a great deal.Reading from chapter to chapter, I honestly didn’t have any idea where the story was headed, but I didn’t have any intentions of stopping. The dialog is casual and friendly, and Peter’s actions and inner thoughts had me laughing several times. And in other chapters, the writing was absolutely beautiful and vividly serious:"By the time I reached the cliff path I was panting with exertion, but shivering too as a chill wind raced over the sea to claw at my clothes and lash at my face. The sun had disappeared beneath a big bank of ugly grey clouds, the sea beneath them an ominous green grey mass of seething waves, rising and falling with relentless ferocity.”Peter loves to be spanked and disciplined, and in the end we learn more about his past, and how he and Sylvia first met. The intimate scenes aren’t always 100% descriptive, and sometimes some of the good stuff is skipped over or brought up with little build-up or easing in. Other times it’s really hot! I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and it gave me a wonderful insight into a domestic discipline based relationship. It also had my husband screaming through the hallways with his hands on his backside as I chased him around the house with a spatula. Just kidding :)

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Somewhat harsh, but really enjoyable By thomas kelly I rated this story a 5 due to the story line and characterization of Peter and Sylvia. Their relationship is harsh on one hand and loving on the other. I really liked the fact that blatant disregard for Peters feelings were left out of the storyline. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys this type of story. Hopefully I will be reading more of Ms Appleby's works.

Every summer Annabel Kendal joins her extended family on a holiday at her grandmother’s house in Devon. Yet a dark shadow casts its presence over each trip – 28 years ago Annabel’s Aunt Hilary was brutally murdered on a similar holiday when Annabel was just a toddler. With no one found guilty, the subject has been hushed away and is now taboo on their trips. When an over-zealous journalist starts digging around the murder, the suspicion and guilt in Annabel’s family comes back to the surface. Annabel starts researching into the truth, and the discovery of her much-maligned French mother Monique’s diary reveals some alarming details. With the added pressure of her marriage struggling and a series of anonymous phone calls, Annabel is drawn into the middle of a dark family secret. ‘Past Shadows’ is another absorbing murder mystery from crime thriller author Anthea Fraser. Praise for Anthea Fraser: “A superbly crafted, riveting, page-turner of a read" - Booklist “Ms Fraser is her dependable elegant, guileful self withholding the killer's identity till a dying fall" - Sunday Times “A well-mannered, well-plotted and well-told story” - Birmingham Post “Sympathetic, well-executed book, in which full attention is paid to human feelings and failings” - Yorkshire Post “Anthea Fraser is a worthy follower of the traditional whodunit system...The plot is sustained throughout, and her artistic detective who literally "draws conclusions" is an original character.” - Sunderland Echo Anthea Fraser has written all her life but did not begin to take it seriously until after marriage, when she found herself at home with two small daughters and embarked on a correspondence course with the London School of Journalism. She wrote short stories before turning to novels of the supernatural, and then to crime. Her novels include ‘The Seven Stars’, ‘The Ten Commandments’, ‘Death Speaks Softly’ and ‘Pretty Maids All in a Row’. Endeavour Press is the UK's leading independent digital publisher. Past Shadows, by Anthea Fraser

From Publishers Weekly A long-unsolved crime haunts French teacher Annabel Kendal in this compelling traditional mystery by prolific British author Fraser (The Twelve Apostles, etc.). When Annabel and her husband, Simon, get invited to her grandmother's annual birthday party and family reunion, old anxieties resurface. Worried her marriage may be floundering and by the unexpected appearance of a journalist eager to question her about the unsolved murder of her Aunt Hilary that occurred at a similar family celebration 28 years earlier, Annabel experiences once again the dreaded nightmare that has plagued her since childhood. To delve into the past could further jeopardize her tenuous position in the prestigious and proper Carlyle family, as the murderer may have been one of her own relatives, including her very French and now deceased mother. Despite growing tension as the family gathers, Annabel, now in possession of her mother's lost diaries, feels she must dispel the shadows of suspicion for the sake of her own sanity, whatever the cost. The pieces of the puzzle neatly build toward the dramatic and surprising conclusion, while the vivid South Wales, Devon coast and Cheltenham settings will delight Anglophiles everywhere. In spite of somewhat stereotypical secondary characters and a rather contrived portrait of family dynamics, this is a book readers will be reluctant to put down. (Sept.)SOMEONE KILLED HIS BOYFRIENDDavid Stukas. Kensington, $22 (256p) ISBN 0-7582-0038-2~A clever combination of mystery and social satire with a dash of fantasy, this debut novel takes the reader on a romp through gay and lesbian neighborhoods from Manhattan to Provincetown. Fabulously wealthy Michael Stark picks up every gorgeous young man he meets, much to the envy of his loyal follower, ad copy writer and narrator Robert Willsop. But when Michael is ready to settle down, he gets his comeuppance at his extravagant wedding to supermodel Max Crawford, who leaves him at the altar and absconds with his priceless Matisse. A merry chase takes Michael and Robert through posh Newport to the gay bars and drag shows of P'town, at first in search of the missing painting but later after Max's murderer. Chapter headings amusingly spoof movie and song titles or movies ("Beach Blanket Himbos," "It's My Party and I'll Be Smug if I Want to," etc.), while character names are often puns; e.g., drag queen Beyonda Sea, who wants money for her charity called SFA (not Saks Fifth Avenue, as Robert guesses, but Sequins For All). Often hilarious, sometimes silly and occasionally clich‚d, this fast-moving farce gives a riotous view of the gay rich boy scene of sex, money and outrageous flamboyance. A bright, eye-catching dust jacket of a beach scene perfectly conveys the flavor of the text. Those readers who miss Joe Keenan (Blue Heaven; Putting on the Ritz), both gay and straight, will appreciate this promising and witty writer, who is at work on a second novel. Agent, Alison J. Picard.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Enjoyable By Audra Ferguson The problem is that it states it's a DCI David Webb story and it's not!!! Anyhow, I would have read it anyway. I just don't like to be lied to.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Too many loose ends By Mtlnative I like Anthea Fraser in general but this is a very poorly plotted book. It goes off in several different directions--murder, adultery, possibly stalking, potential for a second murder. But all of a sudden the murder is solved in a very "deus ex machina" way and all of the other interesting threads are just left loosely dangling. I felt as if Ms Fraser suddenly tired of writing this particular story and decided to end it to pursue something else. I almost wish she would write an addendum to it to tie things up because I feel like I've been left hanging. Yes, the murder was solved at the end but there were a few sub-stories I would have liked to see pursued to their end. Annabel's marriage? Did Emma recover once the truth was known? What about the painting?

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A really good book. By Amazon Customer My only quibble was that I didn't want it to end. I was so engrossed in the story that I forgot it was just a story. I hope there's will be a sequel.

In Charles River Editors’ American Legends series, readers can get caught up to speed on the lives of America’s most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known. In the 21st century, Americans are intimately familiar with televangelists and preachers with a national reputation, and their shows are ubiquitous, but in the middle of the 20th century, the phenomenon was popularized by the most famous evangelist in American history: Billy Graham. As biographer Grant Wacker put it, “By the middle 1960s, he had become the ‘Great Legitimator’. ...His presence conferred sanctity on events, authority on presidents, acceptability on wars, desirability on decency, [and] shame on indecency....By the middle 1970s, many deemed him ‘America's pastor.’” By his mid-20s, Graham was a Baptist pastor in the Midwest, and throughout the 1940s, he began traveling across the country to spread his ministry and message through large gatherings that he termed “crusades.” In time, these crusades would take place in nearly 200 nations and attract hundreds of millions of people, helping catapult him to international prominence and making him a household name. In the process, Graham became a figure of political importance, not only for his outspoken stances on issues like civil rights and other social issues but because he was close to political leaders like Dwight D. Eisenhower. At the same time, he was controversial among some, including Harry Truman, who was quoted as saying “I hadn't ought to say this, but he's one of those counterfeits I was telling you about. He claims he's a friend of all the Presidents, but he was never a friend of mine when I was President. I just don't go for people like that. All he's interested in is getting his name in the paper.” When President Nixon’s tapes were declassified, some of Graham’s anti-Semitic comments to the president about Jews controlling the media were also made public, further tarnishing his image. Nonetheless, Graham continues to be a popular figure, and it’s estimated that his message has reached more than 2 billion people through radio, television, and other media. In conjunction with that, it’s believed that he has converted millions of people to Christianity. American Legends: The Life of Billy Graham examines the life and career of America’s most famous evangelist. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about Billy Graham like never before, in no time at all.

The man doesn't come across any clearer or real than what his publicist would like the public to know about his life. If you are familiar with Billy Graham, don't waste your time reading this book.

Elon Musk by Ashlee Vance | Summary & Analysis

Preview:

Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future is a biography by Ashlee Vance. Musk originally refused to cooperate with Vance’s biography. This was no surprise, as he was known for being extremely controlling of everything written about him and his companies. Vance already had plenty of inside sources, but he wanted Musk’s input. Musk demanded to be allowed to vet the book and add his version where he did not agree. Vance refused. However, he managed to get Musk to listen to his journalistic and personal reasons for not allowing pre-approval of the book. To his surprise, Musk agreed to cooperate and allowed free access to his staff, friends, and family.

Musk’s three major goals in life were to make humans space colonizers, to build ecologically sound and beautiful cars, and to power the world with safe, free solar energy. By 2012, his Space X, Tesla Motors, and SolarCity companies were all racking up success after success in each of his goal areas…

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A definitive companion summary to the book that has definitely increased my insight regarding this brilliant man By E.A. Gray As a huge fan of Mr. Musk and a follower of his entrepreneurial endeavors, I enjoy consuming any material I can find regarding him. After reading the book by Ashlee Vance, I also purchased this Summary and Analysis in order to get further insight into one of the great geniuses of contemporary times. From the beginning, I enjoyed the succinct and dense summary of the books high points followed by a breakdown of the key people that affected his life. Also, the character analysis was quite erudite and provided a seemingly scholastic objective view of who he is as a person based on its observations of the biography. Also, under themes, I thoroughly enjoyed the comparison writing on Mr. Musk and Tony Stark; it was an elucidating parallel and the fact that it was included made the book even that much more entertaining. This companion book is a perfect summary for anyone wanting further clarity on the biography about Elon’s life and I found it to be an exceptional addition to the work.

Worth every penny. I loved reading about the successes and misfires of this incredible giant, Elon Musk. It's incredible that no matter the obstacles, he was still able to create these profitable businesses that push the boundaries of the tech industry.I especially enjoyed the section in this review that compared Musk to the fictional character Tony Stark. There are many similarities between the two. It's fascinating that someone could actually live up to the fictional hero, and fill those giant shoes. This review gives a brief overview and analysis of the biography, capturing the essence of Musk and his life. Well worth reading!

Paypal is a feat in itself but the Tesla and space endeavors are huge. I was set to delve into Ashlee Vance's new biography of Musk and someone who had just read it warned me that it was a bit disjointed, as in not all chronologically laid out. I was glad to find Instaread's Summary & Analysis that I found to be an awesome companion to this important book, giving a good summary along the way, an analysis of the author's style, as well as info on important people in the book. A great summary to a very good biography.
