George Author and Reno resident George Wilson describes Reno as “an overgrown cow town.” Yet, he also shows in his collection of short stories, “A Neon Glow in the Night,” that Reno, Nevada is a town full of contrasts, from the difficulty of living in a homeless shelter to trying to get work at a day labor agency to sitting at a college library, reading western philosophy.As a 15-year resident of the “biggest little city in the world,” I can write that Wilson does a great job of capturing what it is like to live in Reno with a limited income. He mentions places and people I know.Full disclosure: I helped Wilson edit this book, provided the cover photo, and formatted the book for print. That said, he already paid me, so I can say what I want.The book contains nine short stories, all revolving around Wilson’s life in Reno. From cab driver to sleeping in a shelter to dealing with self-satisfied volunteers at a mission food bank, he relates his experience, dropping his feelings and a few philosophical references along the way. He does a great job relating to us the types of characters that live in this town – Reno being a place full of colorful personalities.Ultimately, the theme of maintaining one’s humanity and intelligence during hardship is expressed through most, if not all of the stories. I know George has had a tough time in Reno; yet, he is a friendly, intelligent person more interested in discussing political science, literature, and philosophy than complaining about his life.This is a good, bordering on great collection of experiences and characters that give the reader the experience of living in this “overgrown cow town,” which many of us call home.

About the Author

I was born into a loving middle class family in Lansing, Illinois. I was raised with the teachings of the Catholic Church and have been searching for God since 2008. I have read hundreds of books and most other religion's bibles, but none of the books led me to God. Meditation is one of the things I really enjoyed doing throughout these past seven years. It has showed me the true path toward God. I started into the painters union at 19 years old and today I work for myself as a painting contractor. I live with my wife Kim and our two children Nolan and Caden, in Northwest Indiana.

As a London lawyer called in 85 and who married the little girl who lived next to Frankie I connected to every morbid paragraph. I'm retroactively frightened for my kids who began life in 83. I will lose sleep.

By Mary Suzanne Elliott I just finished “Murder City” and can say that I was fascinated by the story---and the darkness of it all. Saying that I enjoyed the read would be putting it in the wrong context. Well written is a better recommendation. More importantly, the overview of serial crime and the capability of a deranged mind or minds to move though an otherwise unsuspecting society is exposed. Are the same crimes happening in and around us today? Arntfield makes you wonder if they can ever be stopped.

You will feel wet and cold, and then warm up by the wood stove.Jason is growing in a spiritual sense while being taught harsh lessons by Mother Nature. The author does a good job of explaining how he accomplished great feats on his homestead alone. I think it's interesting how two women enter and leave his life without any real emotion from him.

From the Author "Slavery is still a stain upon the soul of America" George W Bush once said, and racial disharmony is still very much a part of its culture; but it needn't be that way! We don't have to live as victim's of the past and whether we're the perpetrator's of wrongdoing or the victim's of it, there's always hope and a way of restoration. But I don't believe as some do, that it's as simple as just deciding to move on. That's part of it, but real healing has to take place first, and it can.Injustice has played such a part in shaping Africans and African Americans into who they are now, or at least who they are perceived to be; but that's not their real identity, it's only the one that's been thrust upon them. My journey was about identification really. About listening to people and not being afraid of their anger, and about recognizing that you're not better than anyone because of the color of your skin or even your social standing. What I did and was a part of, may seem like an unusual thing to do, but sometimes unusual things are needed in order to raise awareness; especially when the wounds run so deep and are so far in the past.Writing 'The Amazing Grace Tour' was a voyage of discovery for me also in a lot of ways. By Deirdra Doan ."The Amazing Grace Tour" is a moving story of how the past can and does still effect people today. It gives you empathy as you hear stories of real African American individuals today and for me, it was so moving to hear their stories in their own words. It is inspiring and hopeful to see how prayer and love is so very simple and yet so healing. The book gave me an understanding and insight into the pain and anger of some African Americans and how much prayer and reconciliation needs to happen in order to heal the people and our country. This book is especially timely now in light of the news and riots, anger and pain with police involved in African American deaths. It is all very confusing, but this message is needed more than ever and helps straighten out a lot of the confusion.

About the Author Bill Hancock is a grandfather, musician, writer, outdoorsman, marathon runner, and former director of musical-theater productions. A graduate of the University of Oklahoma, he now works as the first full-time administrator of the Bowl Championship Series (BCS). He was previously an administrator of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. Hancock also served in various administrative roles at the University of Oklahoma and the old Big Eight Conference, making his ties throughout college sports extensive. He has volunteered for the USOC at six summer Olympics games.

Riding Off Into the Sunset (and Ocean) By Bo Carter "Riding With the Blue Moth" by Bill Hancock chronicles not only the grief of losing a son, Will, in the Oklahoma State basketball team airplane tragedy but also the amazing conquest of a cross-America bicycle trip. Bill Hancock gives his heart and soul to a spirit-cleansing ride as well as getting the support of his wonderful wife, Nicki, daughter-in-law Karen, and the entire immediate family after this gut-wrenching loss.Bill's honesty and coping with the struggles of Will's loss and the hazards of trekking from California to Georgia are absolutely inspiring and refreshing. This book is a `must read' for anyone dealing with the loss of a loved one, a great personal challenge or even the casual reader who wants to get a great spiritual lift from a wonderful volume.

14 of 15 people found the following review helpful. How to endure the unendurable By Michael A. Willhoite Bill Hancock has written an exquisitely crafted memoir out of his heartbreak. Pedalling across the country was a means of coping with unbearable pain, and in doing so, he exorcised (as far as was possible) some of the agony of losing his son, Will. His odyssey is also an accidental biography of the nation, in the small, incisive portraits of some of the people he encountered on the way. Taking the back roads as a means of avoiding the worst traffic, he encountered backyard America in all its variety. In writing "Riding With the Blue Moth' he has given us a memoir, a valentine to his son, and a legacy for his granddaughter.

A remarkable man and a remarkable book By Dennis Littrell Dr. Kennedy, who is a surgeon, begins the first chapter with this quote from 1871: “I really do not think the physicians do much good, and as for the surgeons, I think they do as much harm as they do good.”Of course times have changed and indeed they have changed considerably during Kennedy’s four decades in scrubs. For one thing today’s doctors and surgeons do quite a bit more good than harm. Part of what Kennedy’s memoir is about is chronicling those changes while showing how it was then compared to how it is now.Then for the first year medical student was 1960 when he was admitted to the University of Southern California Medical School. Complications ensued (not of the medical sort) and his career was put on hold by among other things National Guard service.But the memoir is not so much a memoir about the life of Michael Kennedy as it is about the life of a doctor in the twentieth century in the United States, especially the life of a surgeon who is often involved in life and death situations where he must rely on his education, experience and good sense. Dr. Kennedy shows in this memoir from an early age that he knew how important education was; that is how important it is in knowing the latest in medicine and surgical techniques and in gaining from the experience of doctors with more experience. He is what most of us would call an excellent student with a sharp, disciplined mind who became an outstanding teacher. Much of what this book is about is teaching: teaching would be doctors, young people in med school, biology majors thinking of being doctors, and especially surgeons what they can expect from a life in medicine.Kennedy tells us about both his successes and failures, about the good that many doctors and nurses have done and also about where they have failed, and where the system itself has failed. He is not shy about criticizing other doctors although he usually does not. He tells us what it is like to be a patient as well. He includes some interesting stories about patients who did crazy things and made their doctors’ lives extremely frustrating. He tells of patients who would fake conditions, patients who would injure themselves just to get into or stay in a county hospital, patients who would not allow needed surgery, and so on. The range of ailments and conditions that Dr. Kennedy encountered is large, varied, and the uniqueness of each case makes for very interesting reading.There is only one problem with this book and that is the formidable terminology for the lay reader. Kennedy explains most terms as he goes along but like anyone who uses an arcane vocabulary daily he isn’t always aware that the nonprofessional reader may not know what some words mean. The larger problem for the lay reader is that to really appreciate the book requires an understanding not only of the vocabulary but the kind of familiarity that only experience can bring.Despite this I was able to read the book with appreciation and a good understanding, and I am no more conversant with medical terms than anyone else.“War Stories” is an education in itself; it is an adventure that very few of us could have ever experienced; and it is a great primer for aspiring doctors, and possibly a reality check for patients.I should mention that Dr. Kennedy is the author of A Brief History of Disease, Science and Medicine which I reviewed eleven years ago, calling it a “Splendid piece of work, authoritative and readable.” —Dennis Littrell, author of “The World Is Not as We Think It Is”

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. I absolutely LOVED "War Stories" - a must-read By Family Doc I absolutely LOVED this book. I couldn't put it down. As a physician, I've read many doctor memoirs, but none that were as fascinating as this one. Great stories, excellent explanations of medical science, and totally inspiring. A must-read for new and current physicians - I actually found myself reinvigorated as I read - something I didn't expect!Dr. Kennedy also writes in a way that a non-physician can easily understand, and anyone interested in medicine - or just good storytelling - will enjoy this book.

There is no then now By Grady Harp California physician surgeon Michael Kennedy has written a book that most all physicians who trained during the period that he trained would like to write - a meaningful reflection on Medicine the way it was practiced in the mid 20th century as opposed to the way it is manipulated in the 21st century. It is a book that is a fascinating memoir for fellow physicians of his period, a valuable resource for today's medical students who apparently are rushing through the specialty choices, making their career stance one that will assist paying off the enormous loans they incur just to be studying medicine, and in the meantime finding that medicine today is more about computers, technology, gadgetry, gene manipulation, radically different diagnostic tests that test the wallet as well as the disease, extravagantly expensive drugs, and inputting codes on an iPad or tablet rather than making eye contact and heart caring about patients. There is an ever-increasing gap between physician and patient nurture by the eager espionage-like legal malpractice game. `Medicine is changing in ways that make the relationship between doctors and their patients subject to economic forces out of the control of either. The development of new technology is accelerating but the cost of that technology is threatening to place it out of reach.'Michael discusses all this but at the same time he brings the reader into the 21st century in a manner that is not angry or full of vindictive gall that has driven so many physicians away from the once hallowed halls of Hippocrates. Instead Michael teaches medical students the lost art of medicine: `When I went back to teaching a few years ago, it was to help medical students with the very basics of interviewing patients to obtain their symptoms and their medical history and with the elements of physical diagnosis. I teach first year students how to listen, how to ask open ended questions so they let the patient tell his or her own story and how to understand the role of social and psychological factors in disease. Second year students are learning the skills of examining the heart and lungs, how to feel abdominal organs and how to use an ophthalmoscope to visualize the inside of the eye. Along with these technical matters they continue their education about the signs of illness and they learn to summarize and present the patient's case to others.'The main reason this memoir works so well on so many levels is the fact that instead of bemoaning the passage of significant doctor patient interaction, he instead traces his own history as a very respected surgeon - a surgeon who early on embraced that distancing laparoscopic and robotic surgery and thus can speak with experience about the difference between `operating' on a television screen and delicately holding human organs in his gloved fingers and hands. This he does with excellent case histories about patients who made an impact on him as much as he made a difference in their lives. This is the message to medical students and it is rich emotionally and pedagogically. Yes, he touches on the big pharmaceutical issues and the malpractice monopolies, but he keeps things in order - the result being a book about what it means to be a physician, a surgeon, and a humanist. The technical aspect of the book will be welcomed by fellow physicians but the lay public may have a bit of a problem following the terminology. For pliant patient centered medical students it is a bible. This is a very rewarding reading experience. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, July 15
