A Fun Read with Practical Information for the Traveler to Italy By Stan57 Helpful information to be aware of traveling to Italy--tipping, what to expect--forget about ice, learn to live without air conditioning, etc. If one is not forewarned about these matters and fails to lower his/her expectations, there's a good chance they will just complain all the time during a visit there. The book is very easy and quick to read and humorous. Having spent many of my early years in Europe, I can see many of these European quirks from two perspectives. Most Americans don't have a clue about the cultural differences of different lands and would greatly benefit from doing a little study, such as reading a book like this one. The bureaucracy and red-tape can be extremely exasperating, especially to an American. Many things are are anything but "customer focused" in Europe. Italy is a special case. The many city-states of the past still have very disparate natures. The rapid turn-over of Italian governments is noteworthy. The author covers these topics well in short chapters on each issue. Ironically, my Italian language teacher says that all the Italians she knows want to come to America. All the Americans she knows want to go to Italy. One important tip that was not covered is where to use the rest room. Many places charge a fee. We learned from friends to just stop at a coffee shop and buy an espresso which will generally set you back one Euro--no big deal, and entitles you to use their facilities. You would have to spend the Euro just to use the bathroom anyway, so why not slow down, relax, enjoy a coffee and watch people a bit.

Those seemingly quirkey Italian customs explained By Pauline Kenny Ann Reavis explains the things that travelers wonder about when traveling in Italy. Why are many Italians devoted to their town and don't move away? Why is there such a strong link between many Italian men and their mothers? Why is a day at the beach in Italy unlike any you experience in the US or the UK? What do those odd hand gestures mean? Why aren't there screens on the windows? When do I open the window shutters and when do I close them. Thanks Ann for helping me understand the way of life in Italy! It will make me a better traveler!

It's a nice little book to read before you visit Italy By GraceG I bought the book more for curiosity since I was born and have lived in Italy and I know the Italian life rules. It's a nice little book to read before you visit Italy. Everything that Ann says is true. However, I say that the cappuccino can be drunk later than 10:00 a.m., but never with lunch and after lunch. Italians have become more understanding of the fact that American, Australian and North European tourists don't know the Italian rules.

Martin The story of Lewis and Clark was much like the Voyage of Discovery. It was a good book about the journey to the Pacific. It includes many encounters with native peoples of America. It is based to a large part, on the various journals of Lewis and Clark plus there were others in the group who kept journals also.Read it and you will learn many things of early America and the people of the land.

Good but Brief By Peter Haas A good but brief overview of the expedition, although at times it moved a little too fast and I would have liked more detail. Maps would also have been helpful. In a few places needed better editing. I liked that it brought closure by describing what happened to some of the main characters.

Still Got Game is the extraordinary debut release from former professional basketball player, Carlton “Moto” Greene. This is the true story of a rising star's exceptional skills and self-sabotage. The Nba legend-in-the-making, recruited by the New York Knicks and the Atlanta Hawks, paid a high emotional cost after witnessing a doublemurder at age 17. What unfolds is both heartbreaking and inspiring. Self-admitted stubbornness, silence and unchecked fear plunged this gifted athlete into homelessness for nearly five years, sleeping on the trains and living on the streets of New York City. Greene courageously lays his life bare as an example of how anyone can find themselves living beneath their potential. But, there is redemption and new possibilities as Greene pivots and transforms his many blocked shots into a winning season.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. REDEMPTION By Truth "Still got Game" is a moving story about Moto's life and his struggles and his subsequent recovery from homelessness and hopelessness. The book is short but powerful nonetheless. The man bares his soul and opens a window into his intimate family life but focuses mainly on the relationship between himself and his parents, mainly his father. He does not put blame on anyone else but rather accepts his role, his own shortcomings and flaws as the main reason for his struggles. I was especially moved by the admission of this grown man that he spent the majority of his life seeking support and motivation from his father which never came. It is not an admission that many would make as they would see it as a weakness. Many men are not even aware of the dynamic of the father son relationship and the importance it plays in their development. The lack of love and support from a father figure can have a very traumatizing and debilitating effect on a young male. I applaud Carlton's awareness in realizing that his parents lack of a stable family life affected their ability to be the best parents they could be. He still gives them credit for being loving parents and doing the best they could with what they had. It would be easy to dump it all in their laps and blame them for his struggles but instead he endeavors to understand who they are and how their own childhoods effected their development as individuals and their ability to be parents. I cannot imagine the effect of witnessing the horrific event that he witnessed as a teenager and the scars that it left on his psyche. To have to carry this around while trying to live a normal life and not possessing the proper tools to deal with it or having the resources available to help him process it and put it in its proper perspective. You will have to read the book to understand more clearly. Then there were the events that he suffered through while trying to find his way that compounded the trauma and eventually led to his "breakdown" (for lack of a better term). Those of us who knew him and saw him play could tell you how talented and gifted he was on the basketball court, but that is not what this story is about. Of far greater importance and impact is the man's self introspection, his determination to look into himself for answers. That process takes an incredible amount of courage, patience and willingness to be honest with one's self. I saw the man at his lowest while he was living on the street. To come back from those dark depths and reclaim one's sanity and humanity is nothing short of amazing. Congratulations Carlton, aka "Calimoto." Your strength, perseverance and determination are truly inspiring. Stay on the path of self discovery and continue to be a light to help others find their way out of the darkness.

He really carried me through the story of his life and provided me with a little basketball knowledge too. I finished this is two days. So raw and sincere. Its not easy to tell an audience about all that has happened to you while making it captivating.I wish him all the best with this book and hope more people give this story a chance.

Mr. Greene takes a look at his life and it is hard. The disappointments and the tragedies (self-inflicted, inflicted on him by others and inflicted by happenstance) are addressed. At times it seems hopeless, but it is clear that there are lessons to be learned along the way and that the joy of the present can rise above the pain of the past if you focus on the right things.

In Massachusetts, where she grew up, Mia had always been a talented athlete and an A student. But after her parents' divorce and her move to Iowa, things were different. There were no more sports to play that fit with who she'd been. There were no more summers at the club, not even a neighborhood to play in because they had moved to a rural area. It was not a bright and cheery world. She fell down a path that headed toward despair.

In Breath of Life, Mia shares her story, a journey through one girl's life as she searched to find inner peace, healing, and forgiveness from a series of events she could never have anticipated, including an unplanned pregnancy during her freshman year in college. Her life changed forever, and she faced years of emotional and physical torment, anxiety, inner chaos, and confusion she simply could not manage.

This memoir narrates her journey of fear and hardship, an inspirational story that communicates the power of the human spirit to overcome the darkness of life and to ultimately master one's emotions.

The Kiwi and Emu are both flightless birds but Kathy describes herself as "The kiwi bird who does fly.' She is a grandmother who when back in her home country of New Zealand took up flying Cessna's at thirty-eight. She later moved to Western Australia and got her aerobatic endorsement and at forty-eight became Western Australia's first female licenced to fly a microlight. A microlight is also referred to as a trike. The wing is like a hang gliding wing and Kathy describes the aircraft as being like a motorbike in the sky! With her husband, Gary she towed it around Australia over a two year period, and flew in places like Kakadu looking for crocodiles! This story tells the many challenges she faced, including one frightening experience before the journey had begun! Kathy gives some insight also into some of Australia's beautiful outback country . You will agree Kathy is one gutsy lady. Kathy will be making available a second version with a lot more pictures in but of course to be expected, it will be priced at a higher price to cover the printing . The kindle version has colour photos.

Life was good for Jorge Newbery. A high school dropout and serial entrepreneur, he built a real estate empire of over 4,000 apartments across the USA. Taking risks and working tirelessly were the ingredients to his rise. But, he took one risk too many.

An ice storm on Christmas Eve 2004 triggered his collapse. He was maligned, publicly shamed, and financially gutted—even arrested. He lost everything and ended up $26 million in debt.

As he struggled to regain his footing, he spent what he could to get others to help lift him up. But no one did. He discovered that there was only one person who could lift him back up. Then, he chose a new life’s purpose: to help others crushed by unaffordable debts rebuild themselves.

Burn Zones is a story of playing life’s bad hands and overcoming adversity against the worst possible odds. It’s an inspirational story of a man who was pushed to his mental and physical limits, and came out the other side even stronger.

And, most of all, it’s a lesson that you can do the same.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Compelling life story. Good job overall. By Jim Lion Jorge Newbery does a good job of sharing with us the details of his life in a way that can inspire the reader to work through their own "burn zones". These eponymous "burn zones" form the backbone of this book, which details how Newbery himself worked through the various difficulties of his life. I found some of this book a little too political, especially right before the end, but for me that was the burn zone of the book. It was all okay, because it ended well, and got to the good spot. Usually I read books quickly if I find them compelling. This one I found compelling, but read it slowly. It took about a week. That's rare for me. Maybe because it had so much meaty content that I had to absorb it before continuing to the end. Good job Jorge.

Manhold BURN ZONES, Playing Life’s Bad Hands, ISBN: 9781619613218, Community Books, a Memoir in e-book format by Jorge P. Newberry. The mechanics of provision of the author’s story of his life are simple and straightforward. From a union of most understanding parents - a college graduate Argentinian father who had immigrated to the United States and a successful British actress - Jorge Newberry emerged and has provided, often in some great detail, his various growth stages and the most influential factors affecting them as he has progressed through life. At the very early age of seven he acquired and serviced a daily paper route; at eleven by use of his acquired money he began selling ice cream from a bicycle/truck-like arrangement; at thirteen successfully performing as a busboy; at sixteen with a GED certificate, his parents’ reluctant consent, father’s actual help followed later by that of his mother, an interest in music but no personal talent led him to investigate and then use his saved money to start a record recording company; by seventeen he was well known and successful and had learned to “research, interview, inquire, negotiate, reason, calculate, interpret, visualize and create.” and his discs, mostly by ‘punk rock’ bands, also led to successful staging; at nineteen unfortunately he had sold many discs on credit which often was not paid, so somewhat disillusioned, he again looking for a new challenge - his father had bought him a 10-speed bike for his birthday, so his next endeavor was to throw his complete energies into cycling where he gradually rose to become a member of top echelon professionals; and finally again somewhat disinterested (bored?) he entered the business world where all of the lessons he had learned so thoroughly were tested to the limit and provide the remainder of this intriguing story.Discussion: The author has presented a most intriguing segment of his life’s history that perhaps may best be described by a title seldom employed anymore – a Renaissance Man. The title refers to the individuals of that era of the expansion of knowledge whose insatiable desire to learn required movement from one subject to another and gaining a considerable level of success in each area entered. This reviewer occasionally has been referred to as such a person also and amusingly must admit that, with today’s knowledge of the functions of the mind, he is fully aware that a certain amount of attention deficit may play an active part in this recurring movement from one area of endeavor to another. Regardless, the author has provided a most absorbing memoire with a particularly noteworthy quotation and an appropriate description/suggestion. The quotation: He “…wants to realize the vision of his Argentinian father who over seventy years ago, my punk friends and I envisioned over thirty years ago and Anonymous and Occupy seek now: a better country for all. In order to change this country, we need the support of everyone who shares our mission, whether they are rich or poor.” The most appropriate admonishment is lifted from the parlance of cycling: a Burn Zone is described as a situation requiring maximum effort, or as close as possible to this level, for as long as it takes to reach the desired goal. Always remember that others are hurting as much as you are but the goal can be reached by complete focus on enduring the pain until the pace slows and the effort will become more manageable.

Follmer I know that this book is a tale of inspiration of Jorge's struggles and then eventual rise. I just can't get over the fact that his parents stood by him every step of the way. You don't see that in today's society. It's more like every man for himself out there. I cannot say enough about the love and support that they showed such a driven child. Even after Jorge's down fall in the punk rock business. Jorge could have turned to drugs and alcohol, nope he turned to cycling. If you can have that drive in life that you can for four to five hour races, then you can do anything. Jorge really showed that with a lot of perseverance you can make it through anything. Now Jorge is a successful Real Estate tycoon, or so he thought. He looses it all once again twenty six million dollars in debt, not an easy hole to dig yourself out of. He did it! Read as the story unfolds of a strong man with the support of his family kick butt and take names as he reaches the top once more.

Seattle's Gang of Four changed the face of the city in the 1960s, '70s, and '80s by bringing four ethnic groups together in battle against city powerbrokers over development, poverty, fishing rights, and gentrification. The four leaders learned quickly that working together provided greater results than working apart. This is the story of a powerful political alliance and lifelong friendships forged through sit-ins, protest rallies, and other acts of civil disobedience. "We got very good at occupying buildings," remarked one of the Gang.

Bob Santos and Gary Iwamoto recall how a Native American, Asian American, African American, and Mexican American came together to fight for their neighborhoods and their people.

Bob Santos has spent most of his life in the International District of Seattle. He grew up in the N.P. Hotel with his widowed father, Sammy Santos, a professional prizefighter. He was hired in 1972 to lead the International District Improvement Association (Inter*Im). During his tenure at Inter*Im, Santos organized property owners, businesses, residents, and activists from the Asian American community to preserve the neighborhood and build new housing.

Gary Iwamoto is a regular contributing writer for the International Examiner, an Asian Pacific Islander community newspaper. He has written several plays, notably Miss Minidoka 1943, which was produced by the Northwest Asian American Theater. He and Bob Santos also wrote Humbows, Not Hot Dogs in 2002.

Great Book By Megan Menkveld I've been living on Beacon Hill and commuting through the International District and Central Area for about four years and never knew all this history. The photographs are great. The stories and information will amaze and keep your imagination running. I'm so glad I found out that this book existed so I could learn about the existence of the Gang of Four. I highly recommend for all locals and anyone who is interested in history, racial equity activism and inspirational people.

This is the story of one immigrant family’s origins in Moravia and their route to the Czech settlements of Plasi, Prague and Appleton, Nebraska. With an extensive use of historical sketches, personal memoirs and archival documents, Ms. Gehle brings the Rerucha family to life. In sorting out the history of this unique ancestry, the author retains the richness of their lives, allowing the reader to journey with them from Central Europe to the Nebraska prairie bringing; their sturdy fiber, their festivities, their “old-country” music with its notes of passion and despair, their strange, intense language with its jarring Z’s and R’s, their Catholic faith. The Reruchas struggled over several generations to overcome hardship, bankruptcy, the Great Depression and World Wars. Facing many, apparently insurmountable difficulties, they rose above them and endured. Articulated by those who knew Joseph P. and Anna best, you will see into their lives through a daily diary written between 1925 and 1927 and personal remembrances from their children and grandchildren. Their stories describe Nebraska farm life between 1900 and 1944. The details of this book have become poetic as they recede into the past. The poetry lies in the fact that what will matter, are not our memories, but the memories that live in those who loved us. It is the hope of the author, that this book will preserve the memories of Joseph P. and Anna Rerucha and the Czech culture in 20th century Nebraska.

A Berkshire Boyhood: Neither celebrity-gawk, "misery memoir," nor confessional melodrama, A Berkshire Boyhood is more reminiscent of such memoirs as Tobias Wolff's This Boy's Life and Emily Fox Gordon's Are You Happy? In fact, A Berkshire Boyhood will strike readers as a parallel universe to Gordon's book, her own story of growing up in Williamstown, Massachusetts, as a privileged faculty brat and young girl in the 1950s. Berkshire Boyhood is a boy's story of growing up from working class roots in that same place and time. Although A Berkshire Boyhood explores family troubles arising out of the wounds and separations of World War II, ethnic religiosity, and adolescent sexuality (1950s variety), its deeper appeal comes from our curiosity about the 1950s and the Boomer generation, from the fraught relations between that generation and their parents who fought World War II, from our renewed interest in the influence of landscape on human development, and from a vision of the early post-war years as a decade seething with the anger and dissent of an incipient counterculture that would explode the sixties.
