Life was good for Jorge Newbery. A high school dropout and serial entrepreneur, he built a real estate empire of over 4,000 apartments across the USA. Taking risks and working tirelessly were the ingredients to his rise. But, he took one risk too many.
An ice storm on Christmas Eve 2004 triggered his collapse. He was maligned, publicly shamed, and financially gutted—even arrested. He lost everything and ended up $26 million in debt.
As he struggled to regain his footing, he spent what he could to get others to help lift him up. But no one did. He discovered that there was only one person who could lift him back up. Then, he chose a new life’s purpose: to help others crushed by unaffordable debts rebuild themselves.
Burn Zones is a story of playing life’s bad hands and overcoming adversity against the worst possible odds. It’s an inspirational story of a man who was pushed to his mental and physical limits, and came out the other side even stronger.
And, most of all, it’s a lesson that you can do the same.

By Jim Lion Jorge Newbery does a good job of sharing with us the details of his life in a way that can inspire the reader to work through their own "burn zones". These eponymous "burn zones" form the backbone of this book, which details how Newbery himself worked through the various difficulties of his life. I found some of this book a little too political, especially right before the end, but for me that was the burn zone of the book. It was all okay, because it ended well, and got to the good spot. Usually I read books quickly if I find them compelling. This one I found compelling, but read it slowly. It took about a week. That's rare for me. Maybe because it had so much meaty content that I had to absorb it before continuing to the end. Good job Jorge.

Manhold BURN ZONES, Playing Life’s Bad Hands, ISBN: 9781619613218, Community Books, a Memoir in e-book format by Jorge P. Newberry. The mechanics of provision of the author’s story of his life are simple and straightforward. From a union of most understanding parents - a college graduate Argentinian father who had immigrated to the United States and a successful British actress - Jorge Newberry emerged and has provided, often in some great detail, his various growth stages and the most influential factors affecting them as he has progressed through life. At the very early age of seven he acquired and serviced a daily paper route; at eleven by use of his acquired money he began selling ice cream from a bicycle/truck-like arrangement; at thirteen successfully performing as a busboy; at sixteen with a GED certificate, his parents’ reluctant consent, father’s actual help followed later by that of his mother, an interest in music but no personal talent led him to investigate and then use his saved money to start a record recording company; by seventeen he was well known and successful and had learned to “research, interview, inquire, negotiate, reason, calculate, interpret, visualize and create.” and his discs, mostly by ‘punk rock’ bands, also led to successful staging; at nineteen unfortunately he had sold many discs on credit which often was not paid, so somewhat disillusioned, he again looking for a new challenge - his father had bought him a 10-speed bike for his birthday, so his next endeavor was to throw his complete energies into cycling where he gradually rose to become a member of top echelon professionals; and finally again somewhat disinterested (bored?) he entered the business world where all of the lessons he had learned so thoroughly were tested to the limit and provide the remainder of this intriguing story.Discussion: The author has presented a most intriguing segment of his life’s history that perhaps may best be described by a title seldom employed anymore – a Renaissance Man. The title refers to the individuals of that era of the expansion of knowledge whose insatiable desire to learn required movement from one subject to another and gaining a considerable level of success in each area entered. This reviewer occasionally has been referred to as such a person also and amusingly must admit that, with today’s knowledge of the functions of the mind, he is fully aware that a certain amount of attention deficit may play an active part in this recurring movement from one area of endeavor to another. Regardless, the author has provided a most absorbing memoire with a particularly noteworthy quotation and an appropriate description/suggestion. The quotation: He “…wants to realize the vision of his Argentinian father who over seventy years ago, my punk friends and I envisioned over thirty years ago and Anonymous and Occupy seek now: a better country for all. In order to change this country, we need the support of everyone who shares our mission, whether they are rich or poor.” The most appropriate admonishment is lifted from the parlance of cycling: a Burn Zone is described as a situation requiring maximum effort, or as close as possible to this level, for as long as it takes to reach the desired goal. Always remember that others are hurting as much as you are but the goal can be reached by complete focus on enduring the pain until the pace slows and the effort will become more manageable.

Follmer I know that this book is a tale of inspiration of Jorge's struggles and then eventual rise. I just can't get over the fact that his parents stood by him every step of the way. You don't see that in today's society. It's more like every man for himself out there. I cannot say enough about the love and support that they showed such a driven child. Even after Jorge's down fall in the punk rock business. Jorge could have turned to drugs and alcohol, nope he turned to cycling. If you can have that drive in life that you can for four to five hour races, then you can do anything. Jorge really showed that with a lot of perseverance you can make it through anything. Now Jorge is a successful Real Estate tycoon, or so he thought. He looses it all once again twenty six million dollars in debt, not an easy hole to dig yourself out of. He did it! Read as the story unfolds of a strong man with the support of his family kick butt and take names as he reaches the top once more.
