By Shar Great new telling of mean/bad stepbrother returns as a new kinder, sexier version. The character development & seductive pursuit of a love relationship between the adult step-siblings was very well done & made for much more interesting take on this sometimes overdone theme. I enjoyed it & look forward to more from this author.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great addition to the series !! By D.Hart, RCIS Garrett has been through a lot in his life, and still waits for his "one and only". He was a big, strong, bounty hunter, who was injured on a job, now works at Rescue for Hire as their cook and consultant. This big hearted man deserves his turn for goodness. Along comes his "wee one" in a small package; it is sweet, sassy, Tolliver, who has come to the ranch to recover from his brutal kidnapping and torture. Filled with casts and bandages, bruises and stitches, Garrett feels a connection right away. Tolliver is eying all the big men, but none draw him like Garrett does. My only complaint is I'd have liked more detail on the guy's budding romance. Well written short story, suspenseful, interesting, action packed, great M/M sexiness, bonding, and friendship, too are all here. I've read all of these so I know the cast, but each tale can stand alone. The ending brings us a question, and new character to look forward to in the next story.ENJOY !!!

Paint a mural. Start a battle. Change the world. Sierra Santiago planned an easy summer of  making art and hanging out with her friends. But then a corpse crashes the first party of the season. Her stroke-ridden grandfather starts apologizing over and over. And when the murals in her neighborhood begin to weep real tears... Well, something more sinister than the usual Brooklyn ruckus is going on. With the help of a fellow artist named Robbie, Sierra discovers shadowshaping, a thrilling magic that infuses ancestral spirits into paintings, music, and stories. But someone is killing the shadowshapers one by one -- and the killer believes Sierra is hiding their greatest secret. Now she must unravel her family's past, take down the killer in the present, and save the future of shadowshaping for generations to come. Shadowshaper, by Daniel José Older

From School Library Journal Gr 7 Up—Summer has just started, and Sierra plans to enjoy it, hanging out with her friends in their Brooklyn neighborhood and painting a mural at the local junklot. Then things start to get weird. While she is talking to fellow artist Robbie at the first party of the summer, a zombielike creature disrupts things, Robbie disappears, and she is left to discover that she lives in a world full of magic that she knows nothing about. As she slowly pieces together the mystery of her heritage, Sierra discovers her own powers of ancestral magic and battles the evil professor who is trying to steal them. Robbie is a clear love interest, but he isn't there to rescue Sierra. Sierra is a tough, confident, body-positive female protagonist of Puerto Rican descent, proud of her 'fro and curves. The fact that she and Robbie seem to be connecting romantically is portrayed as more of a happy coincidence than the culmination of a lifelong dream of romance. Dialogue is fast paced and authentic to Sierra's Brooklyn neighborhood, which is vividly described. Readers will find someone to whom they can relate in her diverse group of friends. VERDICT Excellent diverse genre fiction in an appealing package.—Kristin Anderson, Columbus Metropolitan Library System, OH

7 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Older's SHADOWSHAPER is YA done right! By Teen Reads Sometimes a book comes along that reminds me just what YA literature is capable of --- just what makes YA something that, when done right, becomes more than just about the age of the protagonist and the presence of common story elements. And SHADOWSHAPER by Daniel José Older is one of those books, a book that captures both the fun and rebelliousness of youth but also the ability to see old problems with new eyes, to honor the past without being constrained by it.The novel follows Sierra, a young artist who is thrust into a world of magic and danger when she is attacked at a party by something resembling a zombie. Although it freaks her out a bit, it’s a world that she belongs to, an inheritance of sorts from her family and ancestors. It's an inheritance, however, that she's been denied, "protected" from because her grandfather believed women could not be Shadowshapers, could not channel spirits into art to literally bring them to life (a rather messed up logic considering the most powerful figure in the Shadowshaper tradition is a woman). With the Shadowshapers being hunted down and Sierra caught in the crossfire, she is pressured into choosing between accepting the old ways or abandoning them. And that is where SHADOWSHAPER shines --- Sierra rejects both options and steers her own destiny. The book does not forgive the culture for its misogyny; it does not give it a pass. While the villain of SHADOWSHAPER is an outsider who believes he is "saving" the culture from its very practitioners, the characters do not simply have to combat outside problems. The story is about celebrating culture and heritage, yes, but also about reform, about youth, about not allowing tradition to perpetuate oppression or abuse. And it accomplishes that by giving power and agency to its young characters, most notably to Sierra, whose innate sense of justice and fairness push the story onward and keep it honest. The story also acts as a sort of superhero origin story, placing Sierra in the role of a hero finding herself, coming to terms with her past and deciding that her powers should be used; she should not have to hide who she is. Even as the action and plot and ensemble of richly diverse characters in the story reminded me of superheroics, it twisted the conventions by taking away the masks, by allowing the characters to be themselves without need for avatar or alter-ego. The characters’ personalities are strong enough to make them all distinct and charming, stubborn and hesitant and bold and flawed. The emotional bonds that Sierra has with her friends and family all seem real and all ground the story even as the action gets more and more magical. Really, the only thing that stood out as more "superhero-y" was the villain, Wick, who, while realistically flawed, does seem to have really committed himself to classic villainy (murder, massing magical powers, spiritual slavery, etc.).And in the end, SHADOWSHAPER manages to show the power of youth, the vast potential young people have to recognize injustice and act against it. It does not advocate for waiting until you're older, or for seeking an adult's permission to act. It recognizes that, sometimes, adults are messed up, stuck in their ways and blind to the injustice that they are involved with. It recognizes that, while at times naïve and brash, what young people need is experience in leading change, which can only be accomplished by getting out of the way and letting them get to it. Sierra is an amazing character and the story and setting succeed at capturing that elusive spark that makes YA powerful, subversive and, fun.Reviewed by Charles Payseur

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. a great choice for readers looking for authentic characters and a fun read By Miss Print Sierra Santiago's plans for the summer are quickly derailed when old-timers from around the neighborhood start to disappear. As soon as a strange zombie guy shows up at the first party of the summer, Sierra knows something is up even if her mother and grandfather refuse to admit that anything is remotely wrong. When one graffiti mural starts crying and others begin to fade, it's clear that something sinister is at play. Everyone in the neighborhood agrees it's vitally important for Sierra to finish the mural she started, but no one will say why. It's only when she starts hanging out with Robbie that she learns about Shadowshapers and their ability to connect to magic through art. They used to be very powerful. But that was before the Shadowshapers had a falling out years ago. And before they started dying. With only scant clues, limited experience with her newly-discovered Shadowshaping powers, and not nearly enough time, Sierra and her friends will have to think fast to save their neighborhood--and maybe the world--in Shadowshaper (2015) by Daniel José Older.Shadowshaper is Older's first novel written for the YA market and a standalone.Older uses concrete details and real locations to bring Sierra's Brooklyn to life in Shadowshaper. The story effortlessly evokes New York wandering and handles issues surrounding gentrification and the changing landscape of the city extremely well. Sierra's voice, and those of her friends, are authentically teen which only adds to the ambiance of this novel. Additionally, a diverse cast including Sierra's friends, neighborhood regulars, and Sierra's family create a great story in a sub-genre that is often frustratingly (not to mention unrealistically) white. While Shadowshaper excels with characters and setting, it unfortunately falls flat as a fantasy. The mythology surrounding Shadowshaping is slight at best with rules and mechanics that are poorly explained when they are explained at all. There is a lot of potential here that might have been better served with a longer novel or even a sequel.Breakneck action and numerous chase sequences also diminish the story and leave little room for characterization. While Sierra is very well-realized her friends often come across as stock characters with limited personality or purpose within the narrative. While it is incredibly empowering to have a book where the only white person is the villain, it was disappointing to see that villain become little quite one-dimensional by the end of the novel.Shadowshaper is a fast read. Unfortunately, many parts of the novel feel rushed. The hardcover has some obvious continuity errors with blocking (characters standing on one page and then standing again three pages later without ever having sat down for instance) and many opportunities to complicate the narrative and characters are ignored.Shadowshaper is a great choice for readers looking for authentic characters and a fun read. Recommended as an introduction to urban fantasy for readers willing to suspend their disbelief with only limited justification. Ideal for reluctant readers and anyone who likes the novels fast-paced and full of action.Possible Pairings: Tithe by Holly Black, City of Bones by Cassandra Clare, Of Metal and Wishes by Sarah Fine, Radiant Days by Elizabeth Hand, The Chaos by Nalo Hopkinson, I Am Princess X by Cherie Priest, The Demon's Lexicon by Sarah Rees Brennan, The Boy in the Black Suit by Jason Reynolds, The Replacement by Brenna Yovanoff

“We do not ask for what useful purpose the birds do sing, for song is their pleasure since they were created for singing. Similarly, we ought not to ask why the human mind troubles to fathom the secrets of the heavens. The diversity of the phenomena of nature is so great and the treasures hidden in the heavens so rich precisely in order that the human mind shall never be lacking in fresh nourishment.” – Johannes Kepler Just trying to define a man who had the qualities of a mathematician, astronomer, philosopher, inventor, and astrologer can prove difficult. But all of that can be ascribed to Johannes Kepler, one of the giants of his era who ushered in the Scientific Revolution and is often considered the first modern scientist. Kepler stood at a moment in time when the intellectual worldview of most in northern Europe was medieval in nature, influenced mostly by spirituality, mysticism, religion, and metaphysics. Kepler, however, was far-thinking in his outlook, taking advantages of the latest technological ideas from the Renaissance and the new translations of Greco-Roman philosophers from out of the Spanish kingdoms and the former-Byzantine Empire. Kepler himself struggled with the seemingly incongruous division between metaphysics and empiricism. By practicing empiricism and coming up with his famous laws of planetary motion, he was forced to defend his positions against a number of important ideas in western philosophy and the contemporary understanding of nature and the cosmos. All the while, Kepler was never able to escape the medieval mind he possessed, and he looked for God in the designs of the cosmos, thus attempting to wed the supernatural to the physical. Ironically, Kepler never produced results that confirmed his worldview of the cosmos - he never found the divine design of nature - but he did produce ideas that led to the view of today's universe. As such, Kepler’s work came to form the backbone of modern astronomy

Kepler, by Walter W. Bryant

About the Author Johannes Kepler (December 27, 1571 – November 15, 1630) was a German mathematician, astronomer, and astrologer. A key figure in the 17th century scientific revolution, he is best known for his laws of planetary motion, based on his works Astronomia nova, Harmonices Mundi, and Epitome of Copernican Astronomy. These works also provided one of the foundations for Isaac Newton's theory of universal gravitation. During his career, Kepler was a mathematics teacher at a seminary school in Graz, Austria, where he became an associate of Prince Hans Ulrich von Eggenberg. Later he became an assistant to astronomer Tycho Brahe, and eventually the imperial mathematician to Emperor Rudolf II and his two successors Matthias and Ferdinand II. He was also a mathematics teacher in Linz, Austria, and an adviser to General Wallenstein. Additionally, he did fundamental work in the field of optics, invented an improved version of the refracting telescope (the Keplerian Telescope), and mentioned the telescopic discoveries of his contemporary Galileo Galilei.

I knew of Kepler as the father of orbital mechanics, but I didn't know much else about his life before I read this book. I am impressed and amazed by how persistent he was in deriving a model of the solar system, and doubly impressed that he kept such meticulous records of all of the dead end methods he tried before devising his planetary laws. Recommended for anyone who is interested in how a great man practiced science.

Suid Bryant's book, written early in the 20th century, does a good job of explaining to the lay person--like me--what Kepler accomplished and how he did it. I had no idea that most of what Kepler wrote was wildly wrong, and that he was more of a trial-and-error man than a brilliant scientist. Still, his astronomical laws were revolutionary, and they helped lead the way to modern astronomy. One of the more interesting parts of this book is the description of how religion delayed scientific breakthroughs. For example, many powerful religionists of Kepler's time and earlier believed that the circle was a "better" figure than the ellipse, and hence that God--in his perfection--would require that planets move in circular orbits. When Kepler proved otherwise, his book was banned.Today, even the most devoted fundamentalists accept Kepler's discovery that planets move elliptically. Unfortunately, even now many of those who control organized religions make the same error of those who worked against Kepler. Some, for example, use their interpretations of the Bible to ridicule scientific estimates of the age of the earth.A more enlightened religious leadership, one not seeking to impose its views on science, would--this book demonstrates--benefit both the sacred and the profane domains.

Bryant and first published in 1920, certainly was substantial enough – even too substantial in those parts where the author (from the Royal Observatory in Greenwich) describes in much detail all the equations and theories Kepler and other astronomers before him worked out. I must admit I quick-read several chapters; I wasn’t overly interested in the exact mathematical formulas for each of the three Kepler’s Laws of Planetary Motions, but much more in his life and in himself as a person.(If you are scientifically minded and want to see what I mean, have a look at the wikipedia-article and then imagine having it all explained in mere text, without any of the illustrations.)What I’d known about Johannes Kepler until now was precious little enough: He lived in the 16th and 17th century, was born in Weil der Stadt (a small town not very far from where I live) and worked as an astronomer, sometimes in close association with Tycho Brahe. With what I have learned from the book, a different picture emerges; that of a troubled man who was never really able to live off his scientific work, a man who had to deal with many problems and obstacles in both his personal and his professional life, and who most likely was never very happy during the 58 years of his life.He married twice; his first wife and several of his children died of various illnesses, no doubt due not only to the not very hygienic circumstances people generally lived under at the time, but also because the family were poor and probably could not always afford good meals and what limited medical help would have been available. Because of his constant shortage of money (he was patronized by several high-standing persons, for instance the Austrian emperor Rudolf, but payment was irregular at best), he wrote and sold horoscopes on demand – something he hated, because he knew it to be unscientific and untrue. The political and religious changes of his times meant he frequently had to change post and move his family from places in Austria to Prague, to Denmark and Germany, and he even could have gone to Italy on invitation of Galileo Galilei, but declined the offer on the grounds of feeling it was unsafe. To top all the problems coming from outside, he was physically weak and affected by vision problems due to having nearly died from smallpox as a child. Knowing all this, his great efforts in achieving something in the world of science seem even greater. Although his own knowledge was limited (for instance, Newton had not yet discovered the Law of Gravity), his work became crucial to the further development of astronomy.Like I said, I had not known much about Kepler until reading this book. It was well worth it, because I now have a more complete picture of someone who did not give up easily in the face of adversities. Not much can be found about the author with a superficial research; his name is listed several times in connection with various posts at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich for the years 1892 to 1923; apparently, he died in office as Superintendent of the Magnetical and Meteorological Department on 31 January 1923. He wrote other books and scientific articles, too, but little seems to have been recorded about himself.

Can death teach us the lessons we missed in life? Is the journey over or just beginning? Joanna lived the perfect life: perfect daughter, wife, and mother ... or so she thought until she died. Is death the end of our life lessons, or just the beginning? Jo Campbell is about to find out and her salvation will depend on the answer. "Memories are like spider webs. They weave a magnificent gossamer web through our lives. Trouble is, we want to cut the bad memories away because they hurt us. But try taking a spider web apart. All of a sudden it all gets balled up together and sticks to you. Hell of a time making heads or tails of that mess. And that's where you are, Jo. You're untangling the mess." - WHITE NIGHT "Part memoir and part humor, Jo and her soul take us on a vivid ride of innocence, friendship, love, loss, and heartache. It's a lot of emotions to cram into such a little space, but Author Kathi Haacke Morehead manages to do so flawlessly." - Literarysweet.com "I haven't read a more inspirational, thought provoking, book of fiction in a long, long time." - Amamascorneroftheworld.com

By Brittany White Night is the perfect book to prove the saying “You can’t judge a book by its cover.” The book is nothing like the cover picture suggests. The cover suggests that it was going to be a scary horror story. Instead, it was a moving, funny, and inspirational story about life after death. White Night was amazing!Everyone is going to die someday and most people wonder what is going to happen after they die. There are many schools of thought about this subject, but Kathi Haacke Morehead presented another perspective that made me think more. It seemed to be a mixture of several different beliefs of what happens after we die. I enjoyed having a new perspective. White Night was very thought provoking, as well. I made me want to reexamine my own life and how I am living. All that being said, it is still a work of fiction, so it was an easy read.White Night starts off with the death of the main character, Jo. Then she arrives in the afterlife and it is dark and she there is nothing there. She had been led to believe otherwise during her life. After a while a voice appears and it is her Soul. With the help of Soul she revisits her life so that she can learn and grow from it so that she can move on to whatever is next in the afterlife. As the story progresses we learn about Jo’s life and her family. She seems to have the perfect life, but upon further examination she learns that her life wasn’t much different that many people’s lives. She is also forced to accept that she wasn’t as perfect as she thought she was. In the end, she has to do the hardest thing she has ever done in her life and then she receives her reward.Throughout the story Jo has flashbacks to her life. We get to meet the young girl Jo, the teenage Jo, Joanna, Jo the wife, and Jo the mother. Each one of these stages in her life has many lessons for her to learn, but they also have fun parts too. I really like how Kathi used flashbacks to help us get to know Jo and the other characters in the story. I also loved her use of foreshadowing. It made me antsy with anticipation for what was to come. I liked how she didn’t tell you everything up front, but let it unravel as the story went on. White Night was very well written and enjoyable.I received this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions in this review are 100% my own.

WoodallThis review is from: White Night (Paperback)This is absolutely a novel for the ages! Not only is it insightful, well written, but personal. You get involved with the characters daily lives and can actually transport your self to the small town and become a part of that life with her descriptions. I highly recommend this book for anyone! OMG I just could not put it down. The story line is one you have never seen before and will wonder throughout why not? I don't know how to express it. It is spiritual, but not religious, it is mind boggling but captivating, IT IS LIFE, in the purest form and could pertain to anyone out there and you get lost in it. I might just read it again right away! The way it is written and the how it is written is pure ARTISTRY! Well worth the read, can't wait for the next novel! A Spiritual Massage To My Heart and Soul By Donna Jean This is an intense story with so much emotion I laughed and I cried, sometimes at the same time! This store is thought provoking and may cause deep introspection. Great characters, especially Soul but if you read this book without the voice of Soul sounding like Whoopi Goldberg, you're really missing out on a treat. I loved this book and couldn't put it down. I can relate to every action and reaction of Jo and I had to do some deep soul searching of my own and I think I came through the journey of this book a better person, as did she. Its message reminds me of "The Shack" and how I felt after reading it. Definitely a spiritual massage of my heart and soul. I highly recommend this book for the love story, the humor, and the spiritual message.

When Rundy Purdy was twenty-four he began caring for his grandfather who was sick with Alzheimer's. This started a three year battle against inevitable decline, a journey across confused days and long nights. With compassion, hope, and a strong dose of gritty realism, The Sea is Wide tells the story of how a grandfather and his grandson crossed the wide sea of Alzheimer's. It is a tale of losses, but even more of things found in spite of what is lost. It is about giving bedtime stories, hugs, and a lot of coffee. It is a story of laughter even in the presence of sadness. The sea of Alzheimer's is wide, but it can be crossed. In writing that is by turns uplifting and poignant, Rundy shares his journey of perseverance and love. Louise O'Keefe, PhD, CRNP says, “It is a must-read for those taking care of loved ones suffering from Alzheimer’s and for those in the medical and nursing profession. I will definitely recommend this book to my patients and nursing students.”

Cunnington My father had Alzheimer's disease and my mother was his caregiver for about 15 years, so I have first-hand experience with the disease. Although I have not read many Alzheimer's care-giving memoirs, I feel that Rundy has accurately captured the ups and downs of his own and his grandparents' struggle to cope with the toll this disease takes. It is also the story of a young man's love and compassion for his elders.Rundy relates the story about how in his early 20s he moves into his grandparents' home to take care of his grandfather. His grandmother is not well enough to care for her husband herself, and given her personality and her own considerable health problems, it made sense for the grandfather to have a male caregiver. This in itself is highly unusual, as very few young men are prepared to sacrifice part of their youth to take care of an elderly relative. The author's profound insights into how an Alzheimer's patient actually feels are invaluable. Even those of us with personal knowledge of the disease sometimes want to think that the patient doesn't really know what's going on. But Rundy shows that they do and that they experience a great deal of frustration through many losses of dignity, but especially the loss of purpose and the ability to live independently. And that, of course, emphasizes the importance of good care – not just good care, but loving care. The author's insights into his own struggles to cope with the progressive decline that he witnesses, and how he responds through the months and years of care are most impressive in someone so young. He was able to cope with the messy stuff – the problems of toileting that we all dread are dealt with in detail. In this case, the loss of dignity was a difficult issue between the grandfather and his wife, and she would not have coped well with the bathroom problems.Throughout the book, Rundy Purdy emphasizes again and again the need for patience, and also to listen and watch carefully to discover how to fill the patient's needs. He also addresses the importance of meeting his own needs while still being the primary care-giver. The issues discussed were repetitive, and I felt that, in the end, this made terrific sense: through the level of detail that he provides, the author accurately portrays the very real challenges a family caregiver faces. Ultimately, though, this a story of love and deep caring. Although it is a memoir and not a how-to book, the author shares many ideas that other family care-givers may find helpful and inspiring.

Although I was a fairly certain that I would become a caregiver to my dad, I remember reading about the daily struggles over bathroom issues, garbled communication, and other humorous and not so humorous events and thought - really?! Now that I am a 24/7 caregiver, I am re-reading this book with a clearer perspective of the journey that is before me. I can't thank Mr. Purdy enough for putting forth this honest and genuine account of how he and his grandfather traversed the rocky Alzheimer's trail because I am now living these same day to day events. Some issues I meet with a smile of remembrance from having read about them in this memoir. Other times, I've learned to forgive myself for the times I've been impatient and rushed. One particular paragraph struck me as so very important for any caregiver to remember:"For all of the troubles Grandpa daily endured it was striking how I could still largely interact with him like a normal person. He was often a very confused old man, but he was still self-aware, and largely cognizant that he was sick and failing. The better half of his mind was trying to deal with it. The better half of his mind reached out to me and together we tried to deal with it."So just what has Mr. Purdy done in his memoir? He has shown the reader just how he and his grandfather dealt with this devastating disease. "The sea of Alzheimer's is wide, but it can be crossed." And so, my dad and I are crossing with hope!

You will laugh and cry with Rundy as he recounts the good days and bad during his caregiving years with his Grandpa. I admired his constant attention to Grandpa’s dignity and his selfless determination to keep him at home where he felt the most comfortable until the end. While I could not relate to the specifics of this disease, I could relate to the joys and frustrations of being a caregiver to an elderly family member. It is encouraging to realize that you are not alone in what you are feeling and experiencing, and that your feelings, as well as those of the person you are caring for, are quite normal. I would recommend this book to anyone who has been or is currently in a caregiver role.

PDF Ebook Adventure, Romance and War in the Far East: The Iris Hay-Edie Diary: A Historical Memior, by Iris Hay-Edie Johannessen

Adventures, Romance and War in the Far East is a fascinating true story based on the diary and memoir of Iris Hay-Edie, an attractive and free-spirited Scottish girl who grew up in the glamorous French Riviera during the 1920's. Suffering under her strict mother, she ran away from home and never turned back. Iris leads us on an enchanted journey around the world to what were then remote outposts of waning European empires during the 1930's. Reaching Hong Kong, she falls in love, but soon after, the Japanese invade China, bombing her new home with her and her young family inside it. Opting to escape prison camp, they flee across China, over the "Hump" of the Himalayas, to India and Kashmir beyond. Her outgoing and positive personality captivates the reader, and her old photos and postcards add an extra dimension of interest to this historical account of her extraordinary life as a rebellious, independent woman in a bygone era of colonial powers and decadence, of the brutal war in the Pacific, and of the growth of the Far East into the powerhouse that Asia is today.

Erdman To begin my review of this fascinating true tale of a brave and adventuresome woman, I would like to praise the creative cover. Her beautiful face drew me in immediately making me want to learn about Iris's life and the paths she took after running away from a fabulous French villa. What werethe possibilities for a young woman in the early 1930s if she rejected her parents?? I was eager to find out.Furthermore, I know very little about the Far East so this book would widen my knowledge of that part of the world.I am happy to be reading this intriguing story. By Sara Bartholomew I thoroughly enjoyed this engrossing tale of a brave young woman who didn't let a difficult childhood dampen her spirit of adventure. By following the style and immediacy of her diaries, the reader is drawn along from France to Hong Kong, overland through China, on to India and back to Hong Kong in a very immediate and engaging way, full of sensory detail and historic interest. The book chronicles the years before during and after World War II in a very personal and moving way. I highly recommend it.

A Tale Worthy Of The Big Screen By PSPhoto This is the fascinating true story of a courageous woman’s adventures in the glamorous and exciting worlds of Europe and Asia in the period spanning the Twentieth Century and beyond. Very few women of the time could claim anything like her dramatic existence. The photos alone tell a marvelous tale of time and place. Imagine Hong Kong without high rise buildings! Iris crammed a movie’s worth of experiences into her century-long life. This memoir of a remarkable life in exotic locales is heightened in the latest version by the addition of more historical context and detail. Having spent time myself in what was then called “the Far East”, I can appreciate the courage and adventurousness of this highly independent woman. That she and her offspring have recorded it for us in beautifully rendered detail is a gift.

By Megan Snowden Let me start by saying that once I picked up this book, the only time I put it down was to go to sleep. The story that Mark tells is beyond suspenseful, terrifying, and brutally honest. It truly gives an accurate description into an addicts life and the grip that drugs have on a person. My heart pounded as I turned the pages, I often felt like I was in the car with them living this nightmare. Ride or die is a book that I will most definitely be recommending to my friends and family. If you are struggling to understand the mind of an addict, I truly think this book can help navigate what life is truly like for them and the daily demons they fight. This book is raw, be prepared for some graphic realities of an addicts life and the tragedy that consumes them. Amazing story of relentless hope and survival.

By Justin Goody One of the hardest things to do when trying to get a message across to an addict is to speak in a language they understand. This book seems to transcend conventional storytelling and speak straight to the addict. From the early pages the reader is put, quite literally, in the drivers seat. I have never read a book where I was so clearly convinced that I was a part of the story, and was so anxious to see what would happen next. The characters were so real I felt like all of my senses were stimulated every time I sat down to read a few more days of the story. I could practically hear the sounds of the street and smell the desperation. It will speak to you through the eyes of an addict, in a way that anyone can understand, but no one will be expecting. All throughout the story I found encouraging words of wisdom and hope that never come off as pushy, but rather show that there is another way, and an easier way to live. This story definitely took me down an exciting and enlightening path I wasn't expecting. I will absolutely recommend it to anyone who struggles with addiction, whether the addiction belongs to them or just someone they care about.

He has you feeling the painful symptoms of withdrawal from heroin By mark l wilder Mark’s book takes you on his chilling Road trip through hell with a killer by his side. Mark’s writing style is explicitly descriptive leading you with his words in such a way that you are feeling every emotion he is going through. He has you feeling the painful symptoms of withdrawal from heroin, feeling the throbbing pain in his infected leg, crying from the frustration of how to get out of his seemingly insurmountable and trapped situation. Mark will also have you smiling in spite of yourself with his sense of humor that comes out when you least expect it.As Mark’s mother, I can tell you that Mark has turned his life around and is now welcomed back into the loving arms of his family. His life is now an inspiration through the sharing of his story so that others can overcome the steel grips of addiction. “As long as there is breath there is hope!

Tilly gets a baby - a sweet but slightly sour story By Meg Reider This book was engaging, but left me feeling a little guilty for being happy for Tilly.Tilly is happily settled into her poly relationship with her two men, Landry and Cris. Her only regret is that she can't have children and hasn't resolved the adoption route in her mind. Tilly answers a call from Cris' cousin, Sofia. She grew up in the same dysfunctional extended family as he did and he is the only one that made it out. She's in a tough spot, a new mom with a 2 week old baby and she's been beaten up by her gang member boyfriend. Tilly swoops in for the rescue and gets her and the baby, KC, out.So this is where it gets tough. Tilly basically steals the baby and feels guilty for doing so. She buys her all new things, cleans her up and feeds her. They make this woman legally hand custody over to them, which she does, willingly. I get that this is to protect the baby, but Tilly makes this woman walk around all day with a dislocated shoulder, makes her do laundry with a dislocated shoulder, makes her go see a lawyer with a dislocated shoulder before taking her to the hospital that evening, nearly 12 hours later. Um, hello!? That is super painful, at least offer her some ibuprofen. At least make her say she's done the best she could to take care of her baby, but it was ally hard. The new mother is in an impossible situation. She's made a long series of bad choices, but she got herself clean for her baby. She reached out first to her parents and then to Cris, finally ready to ask for help. She was leaving her abuser. Her daughter was her motivation. She even gave up the child without a fight, grateful to know she would be cared for. The author tries to ease our anxiety by suggesting that maybe this is a con game, a ruse to get the others to care for her kid, but having been around abused women, I know that finally getting the resolve to leave is the hardest step of all. The author gives Sofia premonitions of a dire future, compelling her to find another life for her daughter, both courageous and heartbreaking all at once. The challenge for me is that this book feels like baby fever. The baby related scenes are about going shopping, decorating and showing pictures to friends. It's all about the mechanics of caring for baby. There are no tender scenes with the baby. No staring into her eyes as she fed. No softly staring down at her in wonder. No telling the Mom what a beautiful daughter she is. No beautiful goodbye between the mom and her child. It felt like baby acquisition to me. Basically Tilly wants this baby, her friends want her to have this baby and yet she feels guilty for thinking she'd be the better mom and hoping deep inside her heart that Sofia gets sent to jail...forever.We do get to see a slightly more tender side to the men, showing another facet to a sadist. It's nice to see them pull together as a family unit to get through this crisis. It's how you grow in your love for one another. And it was nice to see a softer side of Tilly, reminding us that her ferocity and aggressively protective behavior comes from a place of vulnerability. It was an enjoyable read, but a bit uncomfortable. The subtle suggestion in this book is that wealthy means good and poor means bad. I've read many of this author's books and am confident that she normally doesn't think this way. But that's how it feels to me in this story. Look, I get it. My body couldn't have kids either and it is so hard to watch other, seemingly ambivalent parents, have children effortlessly. That's the luck of the draw. But thankfully love, like life, finds a way.

I thought I might get to like Chis at some point as their relationship grew. As I read, I realized that I have no idea who Tilly is. She is not the strong survivor that I cared about. I know people change and grow but she reverted back to someone I would never have guessed existed and I didn't like her.

Love this poly couple Tilly is in L.A. with Cris when he leaves his phone in the car and she answers it. In this book we get to take a look at Cris's past how his family treated him at sixteen his father put him out because he was caught looking at gay porn he tried to tell his family that he was bi not gay but they didn't listen. Cris went to live with his Aunt and Uncle and their family his uncle beat him because of who is. Cris was close to his cousin Sophia who he called Fi when he turned eighteen he went to college and never looked back his cousin was ten when he left for Florida after he and Landry broke he wanted to take Sophia with him she refused. When Sophia called looking for help from Cris she got Tilly who jumped at the chance to help her and her newborn baby. This was a really good book that had me crying Sophia was trying to save her baby after being beaten up by her boyfriend who was a gang member. Tilly who because of her medical problems can't have kids of her own sees this has her chance to be a mom and although she feels guilty for some of the things she thinks and feels like wanting Sophia to stay in jail when she goes and how she feels when she learns that she was killed in jail. I also felt bad for Cris because his family didn't change they turned their backs on him and Sophia but when they found out she had a baby they wanted it. Landry was the rock that Tilly and Cris needed him to be. This book was well written with no errors in grammar of spelling like the other books in this series. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

A few days before 9/11, a number of unidentified people invested heavily in the stocks of American and Untied Airlines and Transamerica Insurance. They bought “put options” in the belief that the stocks would drop in price. After the attack, those men made 22.7 million dollars. Fast forward to the present… A brilliant economist has been fired and disgraced by the EU. He is planning his revenge. He will buy “put options” on the Euro in anticipation of a fall in the currency, which he will guarantee by killing the three individuals most responsible for holding the EU together. The second half of the book is a pursuit through Europe of this madman by my protagonist, Paul Decker, and his counterpart, the beautiful Mossad agent, Alex Stern…a chase more intense that that of the Jackal stalking Charles De Gaulle.

Coleman The Euro Option opened my eyes to the number and degree of conspiracy theories that have been suggested over the years. The depth of research, the realism and implications were frightening. I couldn't put the book down until I finished it in two sessions. Then I couldn't sleep because the story kept reverberating in my mind.

Paul Decker's Assignments Move Overseas In This Action-Packed Political Tale By Dawn Dolly Webb Most of Jeffry Weiss's books following the character Paul Decker are based around America. But this book takes a turn and flies itself overseas, to Europe. Paul Decker is put in charge of chasing and finding a bitter madman who's determined to ruin the value of Euro currency. He's out to kill three of the major players in the Euro currency exchange rate, and Paul Decker may be the only person capable of stopping him. This book takes you on a bit of a hunt as Paul Decker is forced to venture across Europe to find and subdue the man who's trying to bring the currency of the continent down. The action of this book keeps you pushing along. It's kept at a good pace from about the third chapter in. The book does a good job of creating a history behind the storyline and really truly giving you a lot to think about and grasp as the story plays out.As with all of Jeffry Weiss's stories, there is a huge political undertone in this story. It forces you to think about the world's reliance on money and how one person, or a few small people, could make such a huge impact on the world's stability if they were to ever detromize a currency. This book takes you on a roller coaster. As always, this story of Paul Decker is extremely well written. If you haven't read the other stories featuring this modern American version of James Bond, I highly suggest looking into Jeffry's other works. You won't be disappointed. And if you're debating picking this book up- do it! It's worth the thought-provoking storyline and the action packed fun reading.

An interesting thriller that centers around an economist who was fired by the EU and eventually is chased through the Europe by Paul Decker and a female Mossad agent Alex Stern. He alone conspires to crash the value of the Euro by killing the three major important political figures. Exciting at every page, this was a thriller that has kept me intrigued the entire time, and I enjoyed the political commentary and the drama at high places. Very realistic and nicely envisioned. Well worth the read.
