Tilly gets a baby - a sweet but slightly sour story By Meg Reider This book was engaging, but left me feeling a little guilty for being happy for Tilly.Tilly is happily settled into her poly relationship with her two men, Landry and Cris. Her only regret is that she can't have children and hasn't resolved the adoption route in her mind. Tilly answers a call from Cris' cousin, Sofia. She grew up in the same dysfunctional extended family as he did and he is the only one that made it out. She's in a tough spot, a new mom with a 2 week old baby and she's been beaten up by her gang member boyfriend. Tilly swoops in for the rescue and gets her and the baby, KC, out.So this is where it gets tough. Tilly basically steals the baby and feels guilty for doing so. She buys her all new things, cleans her up and feeds her. They make this woman legally hand custody over to them, which she does, willingly. I get that this is to protect the baby, but Tilly makes this woman walk around all day with a dislocated shoulder, makes her do laundry with a dislocated shoulder, makes her go see a lawyer with a dislocated shoulder before taking her to the hospital that evening, nearly 12 hours later. Um, hello!? That is super painful, at least offer her some ibuprofen. At least make her say she's done the best she could to take care of her baby, but it was ally hard. The new mother is in an impossible situation. She's made a long series of bad choices, but she got herself clean for her baby. She reached out first to her parents and then to Cris, finally ready to ask for help. She was leaving her abuser. Her daughter was her motivation. She even gave up the child without a fight, grateful to know she would be cared for. The author tries to ease our anxiety by suggesting that maybe this is a con game, a ruse to get the others to care for her kid, but having been around abused women, I know that finally getting the resolve to leave is the hardest step of all. The author gives Sofia premonitions of a dire future, compelling her to find another life for her daughter, both courageous and heartbreaking all at once. The challenge for me is that this book feels like baby fever. The baby related scenes are about going shopping, decorating and showing pictures to friends. It's all about the mechanics of caring for baby. There are no tender scenes with the baby. No staring into her eyes as she fed. No softly staring down at her in wonder. No telling the Mom what a beautiful daughter she is. No beautiful goodbye between the mom and her child. It felt like baby acquisition to me. Basically Tilly wants this baby, her friends want her to have this baby and yet she feels guilty for thinking she'd be the better mom and hoping deep inside her heart that Sofia gets sent to jail...forever.We do get to see a slightly more tender side to the men, showing another facet to a sadist. It's nice to see them pull together as a family unit to get through this crisis. It's how you grow in your love for one another. And it was nice to see a softer side of Tilly, reminding us that her ferocity and aggressively protective behavior comes from a place of vulnerability. It was an enjoyable read, but a bit uncomfortable. The subtle suggestion in this book is that wealthy means good and poor means bad. I've read many of this author's books and am confident that she normally doesn't think this way. But that's how it feels to me in this story. Look, I get it. My body couldn't have kids either and it is so hard to watch other, seemingly ambivalent parents, have children effortlessly. That's the luck of the draw. But thankfully love, like life, finds a way.

I thought I might get to like Chis at some point as their relationship grew. As I read, I realized that I have no idea who Tilly is. She is not the strong survivor that I cared about. I know people change and grow but she reverted back to someone I would never have guessed existed and I didn't like her.

Love this poly couple Tilly is in L.A. with Cris when he leaves his phone in the car and she answers it. In this book we get to take a look at Cris's past how his family treated him at sixteen his father put him out because he was caught looking at gay porn he tried to tell his family that he was bi not gay but they didn't listen. Cris went to live with his Aunt and Uncle and their family his uncle beat him because of who is. Cris was close to his cousin Sophia who he called Fi when he turned eighteen he went to college and never looked back his cousin was ten when he left for Florida after he and Landry broke he wanted to take Sophia with him she refused. When Sophia called looking for help from Cris she got Tilly who jumped at the chance to help her and her newborn baby. This was a really good book that had me crying Sophia was trying to save her baby after being beaten up by her boyfriend who was a gang member. Tilly who because of her medical problems can't have kids of her own sees this has her chance to be a mom and although she feels guilty for some of the things she thinks and feels like wanting Sophia to stay in jail when she goes and how she feels when she learns that she was killed in jail. I also felt bad for Cris because his family didn't change they turned their backs on him and Sophia but when they found out she had a baby they wanted it. Landry was the rock that Tilly and Cris needed him to be. This book was well written with no errors in grammar of spelling like the other books in this series. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
