Author John L. Sullivan has spent the vast majority of his adult life working with the heroic men and women of law enforcement. He’s been a part of, dealt with, and has witnessed man’s selfishness, cruelty, and inhumanity to his fellow citizens. But he can also give testimony to the caring and gentle side of man demonstrated each day by the citizen who wears the badge.
In Chief of Detectives, Sullivan offers snapshot accounts of some of the experiences throughout his service. He shares stories of his trials and tribulations beginning with his career in a small, sixperson suburban police department in the Midwest; rising through the ranks; and completing a thirtyfouryear lawenforcement career as deputy chief, chief of detectives for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. This memoir narrates the story of Sullivan’s longstanding service in law enforcement that was filled with highs and lows and was exciting, adventurous, challenging, and harrowing at times. Chief of Detectives pays tribute to those officers with whom Sullivan served during his thirtyfour year career as a police officer. Chief of Detectives, by John L. The good old days By louise Brought back many memories as I was a cop with the Clark County Sheriffs department then the Las Vegas Metro police department during the same years as John Sullivan. Very well written and insightful portrayal of those years in Vegas. After 16 years of retirement the Chiefs book made me realize how much I loved my career with Metro. P#793

The author appreciates that there are some who give the rest a bad reputation, but most enter the career as “dedicated By KMann In the current society, where law enforcement isn’t held with the regard it once was, this is a real life depiction of why such individuals truly deserve admiration. The author appreciates that there are some who give the rest a bad reputation, but most enter the career as “dedicated, conscientious, competent, and professional public servants.” Risking their own life to protect people they have never met prior, witnessing things along the way that I cannot fathom. Doing so day in and day out, is something few can do, much less for the amount of time in which John L. Sullivan did. I teach my children to resect and thank officers whenever they see them; I think this is a value few currently instill. I believe that everyone should read this book, and others that show the realities of the challenges officers encounter daily, in order to protect the community. How amazing it is that they risked their life in order to protect my family? Many officers live everyday recounting events and images of things they may never forget both good and bad, as you will read within this book. I challenge you to read this book and put yourself in the shoes of the author, and I hope that you emerge with a newfound reverence, I know I did.

I worked with and for the author several times over the years.Because I was either present at or had knowledge of many of the incidents he describes in the book, they were more like a movie running in my mind. John does a good job of weaving seemingly unrelated incidents into the story of his career progress. My advise to police officers, aspiring police officer and especially to those in supervisory, command or administrative positions is to READ THIS BOOK. It contains insight into the history, development and future of policing. It also contains sound advise on personal and professional conduct and how to supervise and direct others. On a personal note. Although John contributed much more to the police community and the community in general than I did, his book reaffirmed my confidence that my thirty six year career and my accomplishments had been and remain important.
