Bestselling and Thurber Prize–winning humorist David Rakoff was one of the most original, delightfully acerbic voices of his generation. Here, in one place, is the best of his previously uncollected material—most never before published in book form.   David Rakoff’s singular personality spills from every page of this witty and entertaining volume, which includes travel features, early fiction works, pop culture criticism, and transcripts of his most memorable appearances on public radio’s Fresh Air and This American Life. These writings chart his transformation from fish out of water, meekly arriving for college in 1982, to a proud New Yorker bluntly opining on how to walk properly in the city. They show his unparalleled ability to capture the pleasures of solitary pursuits like cooking and crafting, especially in times of trouble; as well as the ups and downs in the life-span of a friendship, whether it is a real relationship or an imaginary correspondence between Gregor Samsa and Dr. Seuss (co-authored with Jonathan Goldstein). Also included is his novel-in-verse Love, Dishonor, Marry, Die, Cherish, Perish.   By turns hilarious, incisive and deeply moving, this collection highlights the many facets of Rakoff’s huge talent and shows the arc of his remarkable career. With a foreword by Paul Rudnick.

The Uncollected David Rakoff: Including the entire text of Love, Dishonor, Marry, Die, Cherish, Perish (An Anchor Books Original), by David Rakoff

Review “The dizzying work of the late, preposterously talented Rakoff has finally been corralled in an anthology of profound entertainment.”     --O, The Oprah Magazine, "10 Titles to Pick Up Now"“A candid, hilarious, self-effacing grab bag of writings on subjects—the art of the wedding toast, tween angst, Frank Sinatra, friendship, New York tourists, and Rakoff’s many adventures abroad and on public radio—that tickled the prize-winning humorist.”      —Elle “A must-read for Rakoff enthusiasts. It includes all manner of LOL material. . . . Some of the wit on display here reminds [us] of vintage Fran Lebowitz. . . . But Rakoff's best stuff emanates from his big gay self. . . . All in all, a veritable Rakoff cornucopia.”      —Bay Area Reporter“An eclectic anthology of ephemera . . . and personal insights. . . .  A haunting epitaph to a talented writer. . . . Any Rakoff completist won't want to overlook this essential collection.”      —Out.com, “10 Books We’re Excited for This Fall”  "The shorter works—fiction and essays—of prize-winning author Rakoff needed to be collected. Here, in prose touching and thoughtful, detailed and just hinted at, he limns what it has meant to become a New Yorker; to come out as a gay man; to suffer the heartbreak of friendships when AIDS was new and, perhaps, scarier—in other words, a life well lived, with fleeting moments carefully observed. This wide-ranging collection encompasses all that brought Rakoff renown. . . . [And] will suit readers who seek thoughtful essays and the grace and the humor, in top form, of a top writer.”      —Booklist   “[An] enjoyable anthology. . . . Rakoff writes with eloquence and grace. His voice is a sui generis mix of humor and misery. . . . Fans of David Sedaris and Jon Ronson will find the book a fine addition to Rakoff’s hilarious body of work; its publication further highlights the loss of his truly original outlook.”      —Library Journal  “One of our funniest writers.”      —People   “Rakoff can issue withering snark with the best of them. But once his rapier wit has sliced the buttons off his target’s clothing, revealing the quivering, vulnerable mass within, his fundamental sense of decency gets the best of him.”      —Salon

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. "Goodbye to All of You"There is an unwritten social code that I learned at university. It is uniquely suited to the architecture of a campus, with its walkways and quadrangles, but it has proven to have universal application. The law is the following: If, when you returned after the summer break, you ran into someone on the footpath whom you knew—anyone from casual-nod-hello acquaintance all the way up to and including actual-yet-temporary friend—and you did not speak the first time you saw each other that semester, you never had to speak to that person again. Ever. You could nod, you could suck in the necessary breath for the possibility of expelling it in greeting, you could even chuckle at each other in recognition, but if you actually didn’t say anything, you were rid of that person. Thereafter, for the rest of your lives, you could engage in the most wonderful, revisionist estrangement; you had never known each other. You could allow yourselves to be introduced to each other at parties and affect a disingenuous, doe-eyed, first-meeting “Hi.”This capacity and desire to slough people off is no less a paradigm for real life than it was for college. Admittedly, in one’s student days, it happened far more frequently, casting about furiously for identities as we all were. How embarrassing it was to have come back to school affecting an Urban Marxist People’s Poet demeanor only to be confronted with one’s old friends from the Gilbert & Sullivan Society. Life is like a flight. Sometimes you sit beside someone and tell them too much about yourself. Unlike a flight, however, life goes on and on and you can’t change planes in Grand Rapids so sometimes you just have to change seats. There is no one more worthy of our contempt than somebody who reminds us of who we used to be. Conversely, a true friend is someone who knew you when and doesn’t hold it against you. There is also a less Stalinist reason for these passive purges: You run out of time as you get older. I have been accused by many friends, as well as by my therapist, of being “suspiciously social.” This doesn’t mean that they think I’m a climber, or an Eve Harrington manqué. They know I’m not that. What “suspiciously social” means is that I am perceived to know and maintain too many relationships with people. If one is friendly to everyone, one is friendly to no one. Of course, this is not actually true. I have a very significant core group of friends who, despite transoceanic migrations, etc., remain the most cohesive social network of my adult life. In fact, the bonds get stronger as my social world shrinks. There are, however, many people whom I consider friends who, due to their being single and miserable like myself, spin at high velocity and bump together about once every three months. There are laws that apply here, as well. If, for instance, you have a cold and reschedule once, add three months, and then if the other person gets food poisoning, add three more. There is a quantifiably infinitesimal chance that a third rescheduling will actually bear fruit. This is true for most grown-ups I know.Like all good theories, though, there is a seemingly contradictory and simultaneous aspect to the rule. If you really want to get rid of someone, a friend who has revealed an unfortunate penchant for psychotic episodes, say, or someone who responds to “It’s such a beautiful day” with “Thanks, I’ve been feeling really attractive,” you cannot. It is said that tragedy is sympathetic but chronic problems are alienating. Late-night, ear-bending, soul-baring conversations with friends who tell you that “nobody understands me as you do” get hard to take as they move into their second decade. It is nice to be needed, but like shelter in a storm, not like dental floss or a really good vegetable peeler. And so, you call less. You reschedule and cancel. You try to create distance. You are a fool, playing a losing game. A game governed by the you-forgot-to-tell-me-that-you-switched-jobs-and-your-home-phone-number-but-I’m-glad-I-finally-managed-to-track-you-down principle.I can hear the voice of Jane Darwell as Ma Joad here, wondering when I got so hard and mean. It’s not meanness that makes me or anyone terminate relationships; I’ve been gotten rid of, too. Countless times. When I first moved to New York, I maintained my contacts in Canada steadfastly, but it’s not true what they say: Absence doesn’t make the heart grow anything. Absence makes you forget. I had a new life that was admittedly more exciting than my old one. I came out, which distanced me yet further, and my friends back home responded in kind, having lives of their own.I did have one friend, however, who used to call me, her voice fairly sawtoothed with umbrage. The very existence of my new life constituted a betrayal. I superegotistically backslid and apologized for years, terrified that I was in fact guilty of her silent accusation that I now felt myself to be superior. I, in turn, would roll my eyes on the other end of the phone at her anecdotes about the same old people, her inertia, the smallness of her dreams, the Narrowness of her Worldview (I really did use these terms—I’m not proud, I’m trying to be honest). But one day, I just stopped. I took the note of contrition out of my voice. I talked about my life without trying to mollify her by disqualifying its importance to me. It is only years later that I see that at the same time I stopped apologizing, she stopped trying to exact those assurances from me that our relationship had not changed. We both knew it had and we both were finally comfortable about it. Recently, on a trip home, I called her. Not to make plans to see her—I didn’t have time, nor did she—but simply to say hello. After years of avoiding walking by her house when I visited my parents, I got over my narcissistic fantasy that she was inside, sobbing, lying in wait so she could heap upon me recriminations of neglect and heartlessness. For the first time, I did not feel like I had wounded her when I put the phone down.A boyfriend once explained to me his leaving New York for Los Angeles this way: “You know when Joan Didion has that man say in ‘Goodbye to All That’ that there comes a time in New York City when you’ve slept with all the women in the room and borrowed money from all the men? Well, that’s why I have to leave, but I’ve borrowed money from all the women and slept with all the men.”When he told me this, I could only focus on the part about him having slept with all the men, but I know now what he means. It doesn’t necessarily make one a bad person to lose touch with someone or leave them behind, no matter what the emotional or carnal bonds once were between you. People get used up. It sounds horribly callous, but it’s true. The term is “tossed aside like an old shoe”—not a bad shoe, just an old one. There’s a false moral component operating here. It’s hard enough to simply grow up; don’t confuse the issue by not allowing yourself to lose contact with people who have now become strangers to you. The movies lie: sometimes you won’t always have Paris, and what’s more, you’ll neither of you particularly care. Although there is an occasional attendant sorrow, it’s evident the art of losing’s not too hard to master.I was recently walking one Saturday morning and passed a store I had been inside a few hours previously. I looked through the plate glass and there, like a flimsy plot device in a bad movie, I saw an ex-friend looking around. I don’t mean an old friend, which is how I refer to people in Toronto. He is my only true ex-friend, and there he was in the housewares section of Barneys. When we first became close, several years ago, he issued me a warning:“I get tired of people after two years or so. I get really intimate, and then I get tired of them. I’ll probably get rid of you, too.” He laughed and covered his mouth, mock-shocked at his own cynicism.I issued the counter-warning that he wouldn’t be able to dismiss me so easily. I liked this banter. It had a Hepburn-Tracy antagonism that I enjoyed and it felt like he was laying down a romantic gauntlet to me, which may well have been the root of my problem. His lover was sick, and I felt needed and up to the challenge of proving him wrong and sticking around for the long haul.We became good friends. We filled niches in each other’s lives that seemed dangerously close to the role of soul mates or lovers. In very little time, our discourse consisted almost entirely of inside jokes, catchphrases, and partial aphorisms. I would pick up the phone at work, and he would be saying in his best Ruth Draper, “My dear, this is not for the children’s ears. Meet me at the Royalton.”We cared for his dying boyfriend. I sat with him in the church at the memorial service, when his in-laws would not acknowledge him. And then something soured. It was precipitous, this disaffection. Maybe it had been developing all along but, if so, it had been concealed, occupied as we were with caring for his lover. But suddenly, there it was: biting into a perfect-skinned apple to find it full of rot. Both of us felt unacknowledged, censored, unrespected, and unloved by the other. Perhaps, in the absence of a shared crisis, we battled each other. But I actually think I had reached a point of saturation with my role as the subordinate caring one. Or maybe I was just angry he hadn’t fallen in love with me. We spoke about it one night and agreed we would have to work harder at the friendship. We came away from that evening unconvinced and dissatisfied. I then went away for a weekend. I didn’t call before I left and didn’t call when I got back. We haven’t contacted each other since. I don’t feel gotten rid of in this case. It is both our faults. His two-year prediction of expiry was merely an unfortunate coincidence.I watched him looking around the store, unaware of me. I had no discernible feelings watching him, none of the nausea of seeing an old boyfriend, for example. I was Stella Dallas minus the rain and the handkerchief between my teeth. And then, as if he had seen me through the glass earlier that morning when I had done the very same thing, he stopped in front of a bowlful of red-and-yellow parrot tulips. Among shelves of overdecorated vases, trays, crystal, and other articles of household pornography, he leaned in to them, closing his eyes, concentrating on the one real thing that was there.[Out, May 1994. The Uncollected David Rakoff By Brendan Moody This posthumous volume of odds and ends not included in David Rakoff's previous collections may feel a trifle insubstantial, but the quality is high enough that it doesn't really matter. The main stumbling block is that Rakoff didn't leave behind quite enough uncollected work for a full book, so in addition to 200 pages of essays we have two 30-page transcripts of Fresh Air interviews and the full text of Rakoff's short verse novel Love, Dishonor, Marry, Die, Cherish, Perish. I'm going to confess that I didn't read the latter, because it wasn't what interested me about the book and because the second couplet attempted to rhyme "help her" with a description of a midwife as a "whelper." While I'm sure the novel is lovely if you like that sort of thing, I have very little patience for straining after sing-songy rhymes. The interviews, on the other hand, and funny and insightful, and a welcome way to round out the volume. The essays themselves are generally short, and sometimes one feels that they're just getting warmed up when they suddenly end, but Rakoff is a smooth and witty stylist, and the catch-all nature of the collection allows for a range of topics and structures, from op-eds on smoking bans and Laura Bush's view of American literature to travel pieces, memoirs, and reviews. Overall, this is a nice sampler for those who haven't yet experienced Rakoff, and one more chance for his established fans to reflect on what we've lost.

Rakoff was best known for his wit and humor, both of which are captured in this collection. As in most collections not every piece will strike a chord with everyone, but most readers are going to find a genuine connection to more than one of the pieces. For example, in "The Love that Dare Not Squeak Its Name," Rakoff discussion about E.B. White's Stuart Little as a gay icon will likely be a hit for most readers, as will Love, Dishonor, Marry, Die, Cherish, Perish, Rakoff's novel written in verse. Themes of family and friendship are a common thread, along with life as a gay man.Obviously not being a gay man limits some of my emotional connection to all of the stories, but Rakoff's wit is evident and all of the contents are well written and enjoyable. Those who recall interviews with Rakoff on public radio will likely appreciate the transcribed pieces immensely. This is a collection that fans will likely want.Contents include:My Sister of Perpetual Mercy; Sagrada Família; My First New York: Arrived: 1982; An Open Letter to My Sisters; Goodbye to All of You; A Former Smoker Cheers; Diary, 1998; What’s Up, Dike?; The Wizards of Id; [Laura Bush]: The New York Times, Op-Ed; The Love That Dare Not Squeak Its Name; David Rakoff: Essayist, Mountaineer, “Comic Saint,” Fresh Air Interview; Fu Fighters; Evergreen Safari; Northern Composure; A Basket Case in North Carolina; Traveler’s Tale: A New Yorker Is Born; Walk This Way; I Like My Dog. I had read a few of his pieces in The New York Times and Salon a while back, so I knew what to expect somewhat. But I was really excited to see what possible-gems I had missed.Initially, I loved this book. The first few essays in here are tremendous. My Sister of Perpetual Mercy, Sagrada Familia (this one is actually fiction), and Diary, 1998 are perfect: descriptive, honest, funny, witty, and, truly, quite heartfelt. I was sold. I was in. Give me more, David! But, unfortunately, the collection took a nose-dive about seven essays in. The writing began to lack, I don't know, personality, interest, heart. There are a lot of travel/nature pieces in here, which I wasn't expecting. Some are humorous, but after reading those first few phenomenal stories, I found these others to be boring, almost like Rakoff wasn't really invested in them. I did end up loving one other short essay later in the book: The Waiting. But, in it, Rakoff revisits personal themes again (specifically: his experience with having cancer), so the writing becomes more intense, more raw.Ultimately, most of the essays and stories in this collection are just okay. But the ones that stood out really made me take notice. I plan on checking out Rakoff's other works; I might start with Fraud: Essays.

PDF Ebook Stage Iv Addiction: Addicted to the Addict, by B.L. Marks

The author is writing about her son's Stage Iv Addiction. How it affected not only the addict himself, but his entire family. This is a cautionary tale about a son who not only found his drug accidently but also got the gene of addiction. In the beginning of her book she writes about the misconceptions of both addiction and the addict. When her son first started with his disease, the author had that gut feeling that this disease was going to take him down, and unfortunately she was correct. She discusses how she feels that the difference between enabling, and unconditional love is a very fine line. The fact that this is not a life of self-indulgence. Addiction is a life of self-destruction. When her son first started with his addiction, back in the 90s if you didn't have insurance, then you didn't get treatment and it remains that way today, unless you are court mandated into a program That she feels treatment at that point in time, was somehow lacking. Mental health issues were a crucial factor in their treatment. It seems that only recently society has realized this. The author feels that the reality of the addict when he gets back into society is key to their recovery. They need to learn how to deal with their reality, and the systems must change in order for them to do so. Society seems to be scrambling because now the face of addiction can be any of us. It is at epidemic stage and it is all you read and hear about on the news. This is not a new disease, and this is not something that has just recently start to affect the ordinary person. This young man was not the typical face of addiction, you would not have picked him out of a crowd, as being the one to turn out to be a heroin addict, but he did. She feels that addiction is not only a serious mental health issue, but should also be staged like any other disease that has the capability of taking a person's life. For some of these addicts, rock bottom is death.

Stage Iv Addiction: Addicted to the Addict, by B.L. Marks

About the Author Born in New York City in 1952, when life seemed simpler and without the complexities of our new world, B. L. Marks is a nurse who has worked in the ob-gyn field for more than thirty years. She had a beautiful son and daughter. She and her husband worked very hard to keep their young and tumultuous marriage together. It is not true what they say; people do change. Both she and her husband succeeded in having a marriage that worked. That was what she was taught to do: make it work. She went to parochial schools in the 1960s and felt that the wrath of God came down on her when her beautiful son became a heroin addict. In spite of all her tragedy, she finds great joy in her beautiful daughter and her first grandchild. She regrets that her son will never know this child because he would have loved him immensely. She is stronger than she thought she was. Now, she wants to change how society approaches the treatment and recovery of addicts.

Thus is a MUST READ By Cynthia Jackson What an incredible story of the pain and suffering that addiction ,especially Stage IV Addiction can bring to a family and the friends of the family. What a brilliant idea to stage the cycles of Addiction. I could feel the great love this Mother had for her son and to try everything she could to just keep him alive, it's just tragic. This book should be a MUST READ in every rehab program there is. This book is very well written and the author has suffered so much in reliving this story everyday while writing it. This book has the potential to save many lives and I believe that is the author intent. I couldn't help but cry , the book is just that powerful. Bravo and thank you to the author for being so courgragous and brave to tell this story of love and to expose addiction for what it is and does to family's.

And Then There Were Five is the story of a grief-stricken family who had to rebuild their lives and learn to cope with the loss of their father. The Woods came from hardscrabble roots, but their family ties were strong and they were happy. After their father's tragic death, his children began compiling this compelling memoir not only to honor his memory but also to preserve precious memories for the youngest two children, who did not get a chance to know their father. The collaboration drew the siblings even closer and helped them deal with the loss of their mother in 2012. It's a loving tribute as well as a fascinating snapshot of life during the lean war years and the post-Depression era.

Nostalgia from: A City Set Upon a Hill: A Memoir is centered around one of the oldest all-boys boarding schools inJamaica, established in 1856 and the author's high school for sevenyears. But thisboarding school story transcends autobiography and evenschool memoir to offera nostalgia piece especially inviting to anyonewho knows Jamaica or boardingschools well, and is filled with accountsof what it meant to spend seven yearsin the MunroCollege high schoolenvironment.Color photos of the school groundsaccompany theauthor's memories of the school's appearance, teachers, its place in the city, and its inviting environment. Fromhow the school's relative isolation fostered acommunity spirit that ledto unique educational opportunities and interactionsto how boys frommany different backgrounds came to engage one another andlearn, descriptions are especially powerful when they reveal the roots ofthisprocess: "There was no computer room or computer lab, like whatexistsin high schools today, but we had something much better: BullSessions. Whosaid boysdon't gossip? These bull sessions were the mostinteresting idle-talksessions I ever knew. They were always fun.Amusement 101. Amusementguaranteed. Just think about what topics were up for discussion. Anything andeverythingthat the minds of idle boys could conceive of were chatted andlaughed about. One of the most interestingfeatures of these bull sessions wasthat many times, the same topics were discussed repeatedly, but from differentperspectives, the reason beingthat many times, there just weren't enoughnewsbreak items up fordiscussion. What I admired about bull sessions was thatno specialinvitation was required; it was impromptu in its purest form."One might not expected footnoted references from amemoir, but GarfieldWhyte's choice of this scholarly approach adds informationto thediscussion without interrupting its progression. The footnotesexplainterminology, slang, and cultural references at the end of thebook whilereaders are able to enjoy a dialogue that flows smoothly. From the lifelong friendships that evolved from theschool's specialenvironment to field trips, pranks, hierarchies of culture andboardingschool teachers and life, this light read comes steeped in the flavorand culture of a childhood in Jamaica and will attract a wide audience, fromthose interested in the island's life to readers who enjoy schooldays stories, this is a lively and personal examination of a specialschool and a special erawhich comes alive with Whyte's observations.                                   DianeDonovan, Senior Reviewer: Midwest Book Review

Im really glad i did By Amazon Customer I just Finished reading the book memoir "Nostalgia: A city set up on a hill" by author (Garfield Whyte).Normally, I wouldn't choose high school memoir to read. However, Im really glad i did. It taught me something new and valuable of other cultures and other experiences. In this story,"Garfield" the narrator; takes us in a Journey to his fondest memories from 1977 till 1984, during his education in Munro college. A boarding school that is located in Jamaica. Going to this school starts off as a dream to be numbered amongst the rest. Through out the memoir, he give us detailed description of "Munro college, such as; "the long wall and the amazing sunset", "The barbecue and the bull sessions" as well as the well described disciplinary and academic teachers which gives the reader a clear picture of the challenges that the students endured at that time." Being at Munro was what I was dreaming about, but still nothing that i was totally prepared for"Nevertheless, the simplicity of the school, the non-existing technology, and the safety they felt. were all taken in granted years later as it is what really shaped this generation. At some parts of the story I felt like reading a poem, the author clearly loved his school, even the description of the cracked floors and the old buildings, were so dear to him and were so obvious in this well written memoir.Despite some repetitive parts, I really enjoyed the author's experience and well profound memory. Also, I was enlightened with some of the most important and amazing sights in Jamaica. But most of all, The role of the Munro school in preparing these students to the outside read.I recommend this book for people who like reading memories and those who are nostalgic of their own school memories! give it a read!

By Ms.Meesh In this sentimental memoir, Garfield Whyte takes readers down a wistful, thoughtful, and saccharine journey down memory lane in his book Nostalgia from: A City Set Upon A Hill. Set in the backdrops of Munro College, an all-boys boarding school in Jamaica, Whyte paints a literary tale of flashbacks of his fondest memory of his schooling and the significance and impact that this school bestowed upon. From the sights and sounds of the school, to the classrooms, the teachers and students, and the bricks that laid the foundation of this institution, Whyte explains why Munro, in all its simplicity during that time, was the city set upon a hill.“There were other boarding schools in Jamaica, but none like this one. The others were duplications, as, in my view, this one was the real, authentic all boys’ high school.”In this compound, Whyte retells of how their lives revolved around this institution. The outside world practically didn’t exist to them, because everything that they could want and needed was provided for. It was truly a city built upon a hill. It was a school that young boys aim to attend and parents hoped their child would be lucky enough to attend. You were considered lucky and fortunate to get accepted. As we read further into his memoir, we learn of his appreciation of the simple things like eating and water. The school taught him and other students to be thankful for the basic needs and in such it taught him discipline that could be used in his future life.“Munro College was recognized as the only high school, and there was to be a one-way street that led up to that winding hillside to the city set upon a hill. After the Common Entrance Examination, my seven-year pilgrimage began.”Each opening chapter in this memoir begins with a quote from a famous person whose quote leads into each topic Whyte introduces. This memoir is his account of his life and recollection of his memories of the students and the people that he encountered while he was a student of Munro. Through this detailed account, Whyte allows us to FEEL Munro College and why, once you are a Munronian, you are a Munronian for life. While this memoir is of his personal account, I enjoyed this personal and sentimental journey of Garfield Whyte. So if you are ready to immerse and feel of what is like to be a Munronian, then this deep, wistful recollection of memories will allow you to taste, see, and feel Munro, the city on the hill.

The author tells us about his experience at Munro College in Jamaica. It is an all boys boarding school and he attended from 1977-1984. I would say 6th-12th grade for Americans. The school was founded in 1856 and I enjoyed all of the pictures in the book of the historic school. I loved when the author talked about the boys not having phones, internet, or TV. They had to write letters to their families. Imagine that! The camaraderie and the antics with all of the boys was fun to read about. While the boys had fun with each other they never crossed a line or went too far. They knew how special the school was and knew the consequences if they went too far. There is a very funny story with the librarian and her thinking a student put a magazine down his pants and he was trying to steal it. Let's just say there was no magazine. I loved that the Headmaster was all about academics and not sports. They may not have had the best teams, but the school turned out very smart men and that is what was important, and what should always be more important. I can see why men feel a certain pride about having gone to Monro.

Angela's mother was a secret agent for the American military government. WWII was over, Angela was five, but vividly remembers her family's flight from the Russian army and wandering "like stray dogs" for nine months. Earlier, to reunite the family, Angela's grandfather had hiked the Ural Mountains alone in winter and navigated the Volga River disguised as a Russian Orthodox priest, all the while winning money by playing cards with three ordained priests. Settling on the outskirts of Stuttgart, the family housed fourteen refugees in a one-bedroom apartment. Each of these personalities is seen against the historical background of post-war Allied atrocities against German citizens, conveniently omitted from the "official" history texts (Eisenhower death camps and engineered famine). Among these refuges were: ~ A fifteen-year old holocaust survivor ~ A sixteen-year old musician, a "Swing Kid," who fought against Hitler ~ A writer who knew too much and had to be concealed ~ An elderly couple from Silesia, part of post-war forced migration, perhaps the single greatest movement of population in human history ~ An unwed mother, kicked out by her village, who enlists Angela to raid farmers' fields at night for food Other prominent persons: ~ An outwardly ordinary shepherd who taught Angela to meditate, helping her through her war experiences and adding spiritual dimensions to her life ~ Albrecht Leo Merz, senator, architect, artist-teacher, and founder of the Merz Schule, which was designated as a "model school" by UNESCO ~ A streetcar driver who spoke only in classical rhymes ~ Viemsie, a black market contact, for whom Angela and her best friend collected cigarette butts and raided American garbage cans There was never enough food, but life was diverse and culturally rich. It ends when Angela's mother announces that she and her two girls will immigrate to the U.S.A., leaving all they love behind.

This is one of the many ‘what if’s’ regarding that precious child’s life that we will never know. But now, Angela Mailander, a contemporary of Anne’s, grew up and writes about her own experiences of war-torn Germany with the same intelligence and sensitivity that bespeaks not only her mastery of the English language, but her brilliance in understanding the human condition.Anne Frank came to mind because Angela’s experience was communal like hers, living in tight quarters with many other relatives and strangers, both during the war and in post-war Germany. Angela’s memoir has all the earmarks of a classic—incredible story-telling and a poetic description of situations that illustrates many of Dr. Mailander’s talents.

Grayson I've just passed the 3rd chapter, and I already wish I had nothing else to do, so I could lay in bed and read it straight through to the end. Everyone should read it. It's witty and charming, dealing with some heavy issues with a lighthearted child's heart.

Worcester Dr. Angela Mailander's compelling memoir of her early years in wartime and postwar Germany offers a glimpse into the dynamics that helped structure the fine artist, scholar, poet, political activist and humanitarian that she is. ANGELA is a timeless commentary on the-deep reaching effectsof war, and gives wonderful evidence of those great individuals who have been able to survive and thrive even in the most adverse circumstances. It reads like a well-crafted movie script with vivid imagery, engaging dialogue and a cast of most memorable characters. I will read it again & again!

By jlswainsboro/Judy Lewis Title: Alien LoverSeries: Zerconian WarriorsDesignation: Book Two of Series, Not a StandaloneAuthor: Sadie CarterReading Platform: Kindle UnlimitedMy Rating: FIVE FABULOUS STARS*****Wow! Color me impressed - again! What an absolute delight! Alien Lover is the second fabulous release in Sadie Carter's exciting new Zerconian Warrior Series and it still totally rocks! Although there is a good bit of backstory included in this book, I would not suggest it to be read as a standalone but rather as a continuation after having read Alien Warrior, the first book of the series. Neither of the books end in a cliffhanger but do end with a happy for now with more to come. This series is my first time reading Carter's work but from what I understand, this is her first foray into the world of science fiction and I for one, hope she continues! The story is imaginative, exciting, original, humorous, romantic and arousing. I've found her books to be well crafted, well written, well formatted, well edited and an absolute pleasure to read. The dialogue is smart, captivating and flows effortlessly. The characters are unique, well developed, engaging, endearing, sexy as sin and at times, laugh out loud funny. The narrative is written in the third person with alternating points of view from the female and male protagonists of the story. My favorite! I absolutely loved the cover as well as the premise of the story and especially loved the snappy, seductive banter, interaction and obvious chemistry between the hero and heroine. If you love fun-filled, fast-paced science fiction adventure filled to the brim with heart-pounding drama, heart-stopping danger, adorable humor and steamy dreamy romance, then you will adore this book. No spoilers from me but I will say this....Handsome, hunky, alpha alien warrior and crown prince who has finally found his true mate, a beautiful human from earth but has no clue how to 'control' her-check! Sassy, kindhearted, stubborn female earther who has quite literally found her prince but has no idea how to act like a princess and is a true champion for all underdogs and strays-check! A strange alien pet-check! An unexpected new ally and bodyguard-check! A cast of wonderful characters-check! Danger, drama and an evil alien villain-check! Side-splitting humor, heated attraction, fiery passion and dreamy sex-check! That and a whole lot more! The best compliment I can give an author is to recommend, purchase and read another of their books. So, do I recommend Sadie Carter? You bet! Will I read her next book??? Darn straight I will! Deliciously cute, fabulously funny, seriously sexy and delightfully entertaining. I loved it! Bring on Book Three Sadie Carter!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Excellent story, funny & exciting! By V. West Excellent story, great characters and superb writing from Miss Carter. Zoey is still amazingly funny & I love that she's take action type of heroine . Dex is still the alpha male who wants to love & especially protect Zoey despite her best efforts. I really love Giz, introduced near the end of the first book, Alien Warrior. The newest character Boris introduced in Alien Lover was added bonus. I am hoping by the third book Alien Mate, Miss Carter will explain the origins of both these characters. After an attack by a race called the Coizils, some of Dex's warriors were imprisoned or enslaved when their escape shuttles landed in non friendly territory. Searching for these missing warriors brings the story to the planet Musin. During a shopping trip on the planet Zoey is accosted by troll and ends up, to Dex's horror, buying a sex slave! Alien Lover is funny, exciting and very sweet. The intimate scenes between Dex and Zoey are HOT! So many questions for the next book due out in December: what is Giz? what is Bishop's story? and will Dex's parents accept Zoey? I am looking forward to Alien Mate and more stories of other Zerconian warriors like Macon, Koran and Thor.

Vanessa Vale takes the sensual appeal of rugged cowboys a step further with her bestselling books set in the Montana Territory. They are much more than just sexy historical westerns. They're deliciously naughty reads that sometimes push the boundaries of fantasy. It's pure escapism with quite a few very hot, very alpha cowboys. When she's not writing, Vanessa savors the insanity of raising two boys, is figuring out how many meals she can make with a pressure cooker, and teaches a pretty mean karate class. She considers herself to be remarkably normal, exceedingly introverted and fairly vanilla, which does not explain her steamy stories and her fascination with cowboys, preferably more than one at a time. She lives in the Wild Wild West where there's an endless source of 'research' material. To learn more about Vanessa Vale: Web site- vanessavaleauthor.comFollow her on Twitter: @iamvanessavaleKeep up with Facebook: facebook.com/vanessavaleauthor

Magical By heidi I was given this book in exchange for my honest opinion and a review. We are back again with another instalment from the wonderful Vanessa Vale with her Wildflowers Of Montana this time it is Hyacinth turn. When Jackson Reed comes back home from his time in the army, he catches the attention of the seven lovely Lenox daughters. But he has eyes for just the one … the beautiful Hyacinth Lenox. It's obvious that she has noticed him also, so why is she avoiding him?Hyacinth just can't stop herself she thinks about this handsome sandy-haired newcomer so much its scares her, but whilst she longs for her happy ever after with Jackson, she feels that she is not worthy enough to marry let alone him the one she desires the most. Guilt mares her from a tragic incident from her childhood it still scares her now in her adulthood, It leaves her feeling that she is undeserving of Jackson's love. But Jackson isn't a man to give up so easily. He is determined to help Hyacinth overcome her past and her pain and make her his wife. Will he be able to succeed in awakening her to the carnal pleasures that he wants just with her?He has sensed a great capacity for love and sizzling hot passion in this fair Lenox flower.Unlocking it will for sure mean a battle of wills, but this love is worth the fight and then some. Will they both get the Happily ever after they deserve?Another great story it will make your heart skip a beat. In this book I loved how it was softer than Rose's story Hyacinth is rather delicate just like her name sake the flower, I loved how patient Jackson is with her and how he takes charge so perfectly he knows just the right buttons to press, and who would stop him huh …. lol I no I wouldn't.Hyacinth as I said above is rather delicate she is also rather cool and calm she has had to endure allot in her life, but then she never thought she would find a man such as Jackson either. I love how Hyacinth is so unflappable especially with her sisters she makes me smile at times I couldn't believe she is a perfect lead character and the type of person I would love too be friends with. Now Jackson he is sinfully handsome and strong he sets his eyes on Hyacinth and he will not waver, if one thing the army has taught him is not to give up or in..... good thing too as Hyacinth is so unsure of herself her life and him and he is the right man to help her. I loved his softness and the edge of tough guy, and how he sees the real Hyacinth he totally had me from the get go, in fact he was my favourite character. One of my most favourite parts is how Miss Trudy lets them have alone time and Jackson catches Hyacinth in the most surprising of way's. I wont give away how as it would be a major spoiler but its a doozey and then some.I just love Vanessa Vale she sure knows how to lure you in to her magical books.4 Out Of 5 Hearts From Cariad Books

The opinions in this review are my own. I was thrilled to find that Vanessa Vale was going back to the world of Rose and her sisters with this book. The steam does not only come from the blacksmith's-forge that I imagine the town has, since this is another historically set romance, or the train that might be somewhere in the territory. I enjoy the feel of escape and time travel I get when I am reading Vale's delightful tales of dual desire. Vale has a great way of portraying the relationship between male and female when she writes her storylines. I enjoyed reading more about Hyacinth and being introduced to Jackson Reed. Jackson is so bold for such a unique time in history. I found myself thinking about Vale's characters and setting even when I was not reading. I often like to imagine what the town is like that the characters live near as well as the farms/ranches they live on. Vale has created a great place to visit as one reads her latest tale. I recommend this for others that enjoy a romance with some historical setting.

Dominic I have always been a fan of Oprah's, her positivity and inspiration has been a major factor for me and I have followed her story for many years, but I have been unsatisfied with previous books that have failed to convey the powerful messages that she provides, however this is not the case with this book!I found the information and guidance in the book perfect in providing the drive and pertinent words I need currently in my life. This book is packed with Oprah's inspirational philosophies in a well structured and organised way. I love the chapter Tomorrow Is Filled With Possibilities which serves as a reminder to strive for new possibilities and chapter 7, Learn From Your Failures in which you use failure to re-evaluate.This book is just like having my very own portable Oprah to carry around with me! If Oprah is an inspiration to you, this book is an ideal companion. I recommend this book whether you are an Oprah fan or not.

By Margaret Cole I really enjoyed this book because it has stories like the ones you see on TV but in these ones you get to picture how the victims and killers looked like, it makes you to train your imagination. I’ve bought other books alike, and I don’t get tired of these stories. You’ll be surprised of how greed make people kill.Good reading.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. True Crime By love this game Stories were very good but they could have been more detailed. They were way to short. I would have liked to read more history.

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Do not waste your money. By Marilyn Winter I did not expect much from these "stories" and in that I was not disappointed. I am more interested in the personalities of the people involved, criminal and victim, than in the mere fact of the crime. But that being said, I must say I would believe that the writer is still in high school, and a freshman at most. Never before have I read a published work with so little command of the English language. Vocabulary, sentence structure, spelling and usage are all on an early high school level and there has obviously been no editing at all. It is a struggle for a reader to get through these.
