Originally published by Thorsons, We Borrow the Earth reveals the experiences and knowledge of one of the few remaining 'chovihanos' (Gypsy shamans) still practising in Britain. Drawing on his personal experience and the story of his lineage, Patrick Lee explores the history and culture of his people and their knowledge of the ancient arts of healing and prophesy. He includes chapters on their customs as well as looking at their potions, spells, charms and curses in an open way. In this latest edition, there is a brand new chapter entitled Encounters with Ancient Spirits Using Gypsy Magic. Patrick Jasper Lee was trained in these ancient traditions by his Romani great-grandfather, a practising Chovihano, and has himself been practising as a Chovihano for the past thirty years.

This book puts you in touch with something real. Something that can be felt deep down that has long been forgotten. The simple and unassuming way the author explains his craft, culture, and way of life is very accessible. The way the media portrays Gypsies/Roma is very shameful and downright embarrassing. Dare to read this book and understand what an intricate, educational, spiritual, and pure way of life this Roma leads. Read with your head and learn with your heart. Lee is a powerful teacher and great storyteller. You will be sad that the book has to end. Enjoy!

By Libby Lindseth This author has got to be the best one in regards to gypsy literature, as he has actually lived it, and knows what he is talking about..... Don't hesitate to read this one of a kind reading.. Most of us do not even know many factual truths of the gypsy way of life, it is a dying culture, and we cant forget them, as we can't ever forget about the American Indian, and other indigenous groups of wonderful people, who really knew how to live and did know how to not destroy this planet.... and the very closeness of living with family ,what really does matter in this world, especially now it makes you think and makes you want some of those ole ways to stick around.. The gypsy people are another group going extinct with their old ways, and need to be appreciated as all indigenous groups do, we can learn a lot from them... Libby

By Amazon Customer Actually I love the history and back story of the Romani (Gypsy) tribes. Lee weaves personal vignettes with research and biographical material from an variety of resources. He focuses on the spirituality of the Romani life, and the choices gypsy peoples have needed to make, making this oft maligned group of society more understood and hopefully more accepted and embraced. The bits of wisdom and insights he shares are both practical and inspirational.

A Nature Book of the Year (The Times (UK))“The hoverflies are only props. No, not only, but to some extent. Here and there, my story is about something else.” A mesmerizing memoir of extraordinary brilliance by an entomologist, The Fly Trap chronicles Fredrik Sjöberg’s life collecting hoverflies on a remote island in Sweden. Warm and humorous, self-deprecating and contemplative, and a major best seller in its native country, The Fly Trap is a meditation on the unexpected beauty of small things and an exploration of the history of entomology itself.   What drives the obsessive curiosity of collectors to catalog their finds? What is the importance of the hoverfly? As confounded by his unusual vocation as anyone, Sjöberg reflects on a range of ideas—the passage of time, art, lost loves—drawing on sources as disparate as D. H. Lawrence and the fascinating and nearly forgotten naturalist René Edmond Malaise. From the wilderness of Kamchatka to the loneliness of the Swedish isle he calls home, Sjöberg revels in the wonder of the natural world and leaves behind a trail of memorable images and stories.

The Fly Trap, by Fredrik Sjöberg

Review

A New York Times Notable Book of 2015“A badass Swede you've never heard of. . . . One of my favorite books of this year was ‘The Fly Trap,’ by the writer and entomologist Fredrik Sjöberg, who appears to be the Geoff Dyer of Sweden: funny, astute, intellectually voracious, simultaneously self-absorbed and self-critical.” —Kathryn Schulz, The New Yorker, “The Best Facts I Learned from Books in 2015”“Fredrik Sjöberg is like the Karl Ove Knausgaard of entymology . . . completely charming . . . his real focus is the human imperative to find meaning in daily experience. It’s a subject he approaches in a wry and disarming fashion. . . . But The Fly Trap isn’t just a series of artful ruminations on the timeless quest to understand the natural world (although that would be enough, wouldn’t it?). Sjöberg is a genuinely funny guy. . . . The Fly Trap is such an ardent, informed and sustained brief on behalf of the planet that a plea for this or that piece of green legislation seems unnecessary. The very existence of this subtle book is a powerful argument for vigilance.” —Kevin Canfield, The Daily Beast “Seductive reading, a quirky and wide-ranging meditation on the deep pleasures of collecting, obsession and the natural world. . . . Sjöberg’s forthright and unapologetic unpretentiousness is close to liberating in an age when nature writing is so often quasi-theological, veering routinely between awe and homily, sometimes even in the same sentence. . . . He has a gift for identifying fascinating and unconventional careers and rendering them in ways that bring out a deep and affecting longing, a longing for love, beauty, and connection that appears to drive not only his protagonists but Sjöberg himself. . . . The straightforwardness of The Fly Trap is the product of the skill of its author and the sophistication of its structure. Somehow, Sjöberg carries you along on his many excursions and detours, always interesting but often only loosely associative, maintaining the momentum, pulling together a digressive skein of stories across centuries and continents, gently but determinedly insisting by example that calm, patience, good humor, care, and attention and open-mindedness are their own rewards.” —Hugh Raffles, The New York Times Book Review“Entertaining . . . whimsical . . . rich . . . iconoclastic . . . brilliant.” —Richard Conniff, Wall Street Journal“Write brilliantly and readers will follow you anywhere—even into a swarm of hoverflies. That’s one takeaway from The Fly Trap, a charming, off-the-beaten track, humorously self-deprecating memoir by Fredrik Sjöberg, a biologist who muses and amuses about his baffling passion for hoverflies . . . a paean to some of the tiniest wonders of the natural world, but even more to the benefits of intense focus . . . filled with delightful observations . . . The Fly Trap stands as proof that great writing can lend a buzz . . . to even the most unlikely subjects.” —Heller McAlpin, NPR“In sharing the experience of solitude and reflection, Sjöberg invites readers to see through his eyes, in language that is often poetic, sometimes inscrutable.” —Kirkus Reviews“A memoir that reads like summer trapped within the pages of a warm and nourishing book. . . . Although the details about hoverflies are endlessly fascinating, what really elevates this book is Sjöberg's promise to have his memoir concentrate on his two-pronged mission: ‘to say something about the art and sometimes the bliss of limitation. And the legibility of landscape.’” —Poornima Apte, BookBrowse.com (5 Stars, Editor’s Choice)“A rare masterpiece . . . graceful, poetic, astonishing and—yes!—absolutely thrilling.” —Jyllands-Posten (Denmark)“Full of charm, the insects are almost incidental; . . . it’s really a book about how to find meaning in life.” —Melissa Harrison, The Times (UK) (a Nature Book of the Year)“Sjöberg traces a sort of erratic flight path of ideas and associations, at once whimsical and yet laden with erudition and a deep feeling for the natural world and our place in it.” —Carl Wilkinson, The Financial Times (UK)“[Sjöberg] writes with infectious passion.” —Paul Binding, The Independent (UK)“An intriguing defence of the selfish, even hedonistic pleasures of natural history. Thomas Teal’s translation captures Sjöberg’s quiet, hypnotic style, his deadpan jokes.” —Jennie Erin Smith, The Times Literary Supplement (UK)“Wry, digressive and packed with fantastically clipped observations.” —Patrick Barkham, The Guardian (UK)“I often return to The Fly Trap, it remains close to my heart. The minute observations from nature reveal sudden insights into one’s life. Sometimes I almost think that he wrote it for me.” —Tomas Tranströmer, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature

About the Author Fredrik Sjöberg is an entomologist and lives with his family on the island of Runmarö, in the archipelago east of Stockholm. He is also a literary critic, translator, cultural columnist and the author of several books.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Chapter 3 A Trap in Rangoon Many years ago, before the island and the theatre, I took a passenger barge up the mighty Congo River. What an adventure! What stories I would tell! About freedom! But it didn’t happen. I never managed to say much more than that the forests were vast and the river as broad as Kalmar Sound. And that I’d been there. So it goes when you travel for the sake of something to say. Your eyes go weak. All I could have written were endless disquisitions about homesickness. So I kept my mouth shut.   It’s a different story with Ladäng Creek, I thought aloud to myself one morning among the bird-cherry blossoms. Then something remarkable happened.   I was in the process of rigging up my big California fly trap between a couple of over-blooming sallow bushes down by the creek—a complicated manoeuvre—when suddenly a complete stranger appeared as if from nowhere. He just stepped straight out of the lush June greenery and addressed me politely and apologetically in English. A wood warbler sang its silver song somewhere in the trembling crown of a nervous aspen, and a pike splashed in the shallow water of the creek. The mosquitoes were stubborn in the shade. He said it was me he was looking for.   “I’m looking for you” were his exact words.   I tried to accept this as the most natural thing in the world, as if strangers could be expected to seek me out wherever I might be. But I failed completely. Instead I stood there like an idiot among the sedge tussocks, amazed and speechless.   This man was in fact, and still is, the only person I’ve ever encountered by Ladäng Creek. If you want to be left in peace, it’s a good place to go. Islanders never go there, and the summer people don’t know the place exists. The paths that once led there have now vanished. The name of the creek is not even on the map. For that matter, it’s not much of a waterway, more of a ditch—overgrown, silted up and periodically dry. The meadow barns that are said to have stood there are long gone, as indeed are the meadows. Slowly but surely they’ve been invaded by fir, aspen, birch and alder. All the same, it’s a very pretty place, as rich and spacious as a cathedral when the marsh marigolds bloom in the spring. Deer meet down by the creek, sometimes moose, but never people. Except that day.   In the Middle Ages, Ladäng Creek was the channel boats used to sail to a village at the far end of the bay, which rising land elevations eventually turned into a freshwater lake. The village is still there. It’s where we live. How old it is no one knows, but there were probably people living here as early as Viking times. The inner parts of the long bay, where the humus-brown water is very deep, must have made an ideal harbour—a sanctuary that seafarers with base intentions surely hesitated to venture into. The granite cliff drops straight into the water. The village was easily defended against attackers from the open ocean to the east.   What ships anchored here outside my window? Who rowed up the creek where today a pike can hardly make its way?   “I’m looking for you.”

Loved it in all its simplicity yet complexity By Deborah V If you are interested in nature, Sweden or just life--The Fly Trap by Fredrik Sjoberg is a great read. The writing and how the author dealt with the story reminded me a bit of Oliver Sack's books or The Curse of the Labrador Duck: My Obsessive Quest to the Edge of Extinction except Sjoberg's passion is the Hoverfly. The book was originally published in Sweden (and in Swedish) in 2004 and then in 2014 translated into English by Thomas Teal. Teal, in his translations, manages to infuse the story with Sjoberg's wry humor and dry wit which makes the stalking of hoverflies a fascinating endeavor. If you are thinking a book devoted to hoverflies must be boring then fear not Sjoberg weaves together the story with passion, life and the human character. The majority of the story takes place on a remote island in Sweden which is about 15 square miles. There we find Sjoberg in his element and in his passion - stalking the hoverfly. The book delves into Rene Malaise another quirky naturalist, DH Lawrence's The Man Who Loved Islands (Illustrated) (The Short Stories of D H Lawrence) as well as flies, fauna and flora and of course people and their quirks and collecting passions. You'll learn that there are 4,424 species of flies in Sweden with over 368 of those being hoverflies. As the author puts it "But our country is very large and verdant, and the days are so packed with impressions and clamorous informatin that I am forced to limit myself so as not to lose sight of something I am forever seeking...Therefore I collect only on the island. Never on the mainland...so far I have managed to capture 202 species. Two hundred and two. A triumph, believe me. Only the difficulty of explaining is greater." After reading the book you get to know Sjoberg in a sense and you'll imagine him happily running around 'his' island with his Malaise trap and pooters catching hoverflies and with each one joyfully facing and embracing his destiny. The story will especially resonate with those that have a passion for their career. Some are content to have a job, but others want a lifelong career filled with adventure and passion. Whether your choice is teaching, marketing or shall we say stalking a fly--as Sjoberg puts it about his "friend" Rene Malaise "He was secure in the knowledge that, come what may, this was his destiny." And there are worse destinies than spending your life catching flies on a small remote island in Sweden. After reading The Fly Trap--you may just want to move to your own remote island and pursue your passion.

By Patto We get delightful images of the author in these pages – standing perfectly still with his net amidst fig buttercups, marsh marigolds, cowslips and hepatica; setting up his oversized American Malaise fly trap in a creek; napping on the grass and moss in summer and with closed eyes hearing the singular buzz of the narcissus fly; rambling till dawn on his island in the Swedish Archipelago, savoring the warmth, the smells, the mists and the birdsong of a perfect summer night...Fredrick Sjöberg is a hoverfly expert, but it soon becomes clear that he's also a gifted humorist, armchair philosopher, gossip, and raconteur.Of course we learn a lot about flies from this book – hoverflies that disguise themselves as wasps and bumblebees; peripatetic hoverflies notorious for long-distance flying; species of hoverfly so enigmatic that no one knows what they eat or where they come from; even the genus of hoverflies that made their way into the bible...Sjöberg has no interest in adventure. He just wants to collect as many varieties of hoverflies as possible on his tiny island. Yet he has travelled, and his accounts of his travels are most amusing. His hero, Swedish entomologist and explorer René Malaise, was an intrepid and compulsive traveler. Alternating with Sjöberg's observations, factoids, digressions, and anecdotes is a witty biographical sketch of Malaise.Sjöberg flits from one subject to another as erratically as a fly, and his flights are fascinating. I loved every minute of this book, whether the author was using the island as a metaphor for certain states of mind, or discussing his political position on fly immigration, or satirizing the tourists who kept asking him what he was doing. This is a wonderful piece of writing, by an essentially happy man. I didn't want it to end.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Unexpected treat By John G I bought this book based on a review in the Wall Street Journal, and, suffice it to say, it's not at all what I expected. The author lives on a small Swedish island where he pursues and collects hoverflies, and, ostensibly, that's what the book is about. But it's really much, much more, because the author has a penchant for writing about ancillary subjects, and he does it really well. The hoverfly is kind of the common thread through the whole book, but there's history, romance, humor, and other things woven in there, too. The author writes well, and I enjoyed the book a lot.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A love song stronger than death By Gloria C Hutchinson If the title of this fine volume of poetry has a familiar ring, perhaps that is because it is the third book in a trilogy written by Elaine McGillicuddy and bearing the same beautiful title: "Sing to Me and I Will Hear You." Her husband Francis had spoken those words to her during his final weeks of enduring bone cancer. The words she sang were "Set me as a seal on your heart. . .for love is stronger than death" (Song of Songs).Since Francis' passing on Jan. 3, 2010, his widow has reflected how deeply that seal on her heart is etched. Her trilogy combines two volumes of poetry with a memoir in which hers and Francis' 41-year love story is told. After publishing her first volume of poems, she realized that the poems "would not stop coming." As Yevgeny Yentushenko has observed, "A poet's autobiography is [her] poetry. Anything else is just a footnote."Each of this new book's four thematic sections offers an appealing selection of lyrical, elegiac and narrative works, all rooted in the garden of the poet's grieving but increasingly joyful life as a widow. Her progress is clear in "What Would You Do?" (p. 80) as she questions whether or not to seek another mate. She recalls that she had thought "I'll write my books, then die./But now I know it's time to let that go. . ." In "What Does It Mean?" (p. 69), she breaks down the meaning of her husband's death into two heart-wrenching lines, four gut-twisting words): "Inconsolable loss/Irreplaceable him." "Sing to Me and I Will Hear You--New Poems" will provide companionship and comfort for those who are mourning the loss of an irreplaceable partner. It will prompt many tears, tease out a few chuckles, and erect uncounted road signs for those who are recovering from the kind of loss Elaine McGillicuddy knows well. With unfailing honesty and courage, she has illustrated the truth of poet Mary Oliver's insight for us: "[Poetry] is an empty basket; you put your life into it and make something out of that."

Tess is my mother-in-law and has a wonderful memory of stories she has experienced By Margaret E Todd Tess is my mother-in-law and has a wonderful memory of stories she has experienced. Her book has filled in much of what I didn't know about her growing up. The stories she tells are interesting and give me more insight to this wonderful woman who is the mother of my husband. I have enjoyed getting to know her through these stories that have rounded out her life and have added to the person she has become. I think others will enjoy her stories even if they don't have the close relationship that I do having been welcomed into her family. I would recommend that younger people read this book as well as it will give them some historical information that is not so well known to the younger generations that only know the high tech years and don't have a clue as to what it was like to grow up prior to the 1970's.

Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.

By Amazon Customer A tale of a little boy, Peanut (Philip Nutt), presumed an orphan, taken in and raised by Blazer Sam, an outlaw and his won-in-a-poker-game housekeeper known as The Rose of Texas.Little Peanut's life is tranquil, if melancholy, since the death of Blazer, who was his close companion --on his infrequent visits back home-- on many adventures into the wood-lands surrounding their home near a coal mining camp. But since his death six years earlier, Peanut still misses him terribly, and visits his grave daily, when weather permits, to sit and talk to him, or just to lay upon the ground and sleep. From time to time, the stage that passes through these parts will stop to let the horse-team rest, and some of the passengers will make the climb up the steep cliff to view the place where Blazer Sam is laid, where the simple wooden marker tells that he 'died with his boots on,' and has two cuss-words in his epitaph. Peanut abhors these visits, and hides in the bushes, watching to be sure no one moves Blazer's bones. One such of these visitors, a Miss Cynthia Schofield, a teacher from Chicago, and presenter of certain illustrated evening lectures which she calls "In-Gatherings," had made the trek on this day, to find the young boy asleep on the grave...

The very words ‘serial killer’ are enough to strike fear into the heart of any normal person. While many of us are fascinated by this criminal breed and cannot resist the morbid need to learn more about them, we are also repulsed by the various atrocities and horrific acts that they are able to bring themselves to commit. Amongst the best known serial killers, not just in Russia but in the world, is the insanely evil Andrei Chikatilo, aka the Rostov Ripper. However, there were many other serial murderers in Russia that came before him and many that came after him – some were even inspired by him. In this book, you can learn more about some of the most evil serial killers in Russia and the unbelievably horrific acts that they committed, taking the lives of boys and girls, men and women, children and the elderly. Take Vasiliy Kulik for example – a serial killer from a wealthy background whose victim’s ages ranged from just two through to seventy-five. Sergei Ryakhovsky was another killer that was not particularly bothered about age or gender, with his victims ranging from children through to old age pensioners. Another thing that is striking about many of these Russian serial killers is that many of them held down very respectable jobs before deciding to turn to murder as a new profession. For example, Mikhail Popkov was a police officer and was even involved in investigating some of the murders that he’d actually committed himself. Maxim Vladimirovich was an emergency doctor, who used his position to gain the trust of vulnerable patients so that he could rob and murder them. Anatoly Slivko ran his own children’s club and Andre Chikatilo was a university graduate who had held down a number of teaching job. In this book we look at the cases and crimes of some of the most prolific serial killers in Russia – killers that have carried out crimes ranging from rape and sexual abuse through to murder, cannibalism and necrophilia. These are Russia's worst serial killers.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Not for the faint of heart, but so interesting! By Barb C. This is definitely a book for people interested in serial killers. The ten serial killers in this book are all from Russia and of the worst kind. The book is well researched and is well written. If you know much about serial killers you will recognize some of them. Andrei Chikatilo is one of the most famous Russia serial killers along with Mikhail Popkov. Having read a lot about both of these killers there was information in this book that I had not heard about before making it well worth checking out. Then there are some of the serial killers that are not just famous for the numbers of people they killed but also famous because of the odd things they do to their victims. In some cases cannibalism and other atrocities. The book is very easy to move through quickly and pick-up the information you are looking to find. A good writing style. Even though this topic is not for everyone for that that are interested it does not disappoint.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Murder Most Foul Moscow Style By Lilikins Russia is a fascinating country with both an exotic and violent history. It is a country of extremes: extreme cold and heat, extreme expanses of land; extreme wealth and extreme despair and somehow these extremes are reflected in the shocking, brutal and prolific nature of the serial killers Russia has produced. From the 'Chessboad Killer' who described his first murder as his "first love" to the Rostov Ripper who's prolific run was set in motion after the police arrested the wrong man and set him before the firing squad, these men are brutal and insatiable in their murderous appetite. Many make notes and keep diaries so eager are they to revel in their sick and bloodthirsty hobby and this is often their downfall providing key evidence. Investigations were often hampered as the Soviet State was highly secretive and with no freedom of the press, information about serial killers was often suppressed (especially with the Rostov Killer) making raising awareness difficult. In a fascinating twist The Rostov Ripper fooled police as his blood type and semen type differed.Dr Death, Russia's own Harold Shipman and the cop gone bad, the 'Werewolf killer' are other killers who feature in this excellent and engaging book. What baffles me is that while nearly all of these killers had horrific childhoods; they were able to get married, have kids and find decent employment and so you just wonder why they could not leave their childhood misery behind and get on with a normal life. It seems childhood scars along with a mental or genetic predisposition lead them to the nth degree of murder; with mutilations and cannabolism to boot.Another excellent read from Jon Lawson; I enjoyed his other book Evil Twins as well.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Hold on to your stomach! By June Barnwell If you like reading about serial killers and their depths of depravity, you’ll like this book. This book details the childhoods, crimes and motivations (as best they are understood) to give you some insight into the serial killer mind. This isn’t those with a weak stomach and there are some graphic images in the book.

By MayaTheBookExplorer The first half of the story was quite intriguing and there was great chemistry between H/h but then it just went downhill for me in the second part, after H/h went to Italy. (SPOILER Parents that don't accept H while knowing nothing about him, then setting h up with her ex who then tries to rape her and h being way to forgiving about it... ) I loved the epilogue, tho.I liked the story but cannot say that I loved it. I'm sure many will enjoy it, tho. :)

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Hard to judge By not joking This is a fun read - if you are willing to do the work! I feel that the writer 'sees' her story and is weaving an intricate tale; however, as she writes the story all her readers are left behind. I struggled with plotlines coming unannounced, unexplained characters, and I think three separate mysteries which were incredibly hazy were all dumped on me. It wasn't pleasant. On the other hand, I could 'see' what the writer wanted to say and I loved the story. So one thumb up and I wish this writer could or would invest in an editor.

I just finished reading this book and enjoyed the stories by the authors By Imxnavy2 I just finished reading this book and enjoyed the stories by the authors. The reason I wanted to read it was because my family is from Cleveland going as far back as the 1850's. Growing up my family would tell stories about Euclid Avenue as a child my family would travel the road routinely but knew nothing of the history. After reading this book and the Golden Age of Cleveland I have a better understanding of the significance of Cleveland as a manufacturing hub back in the day that I can relay to my family. I enjoyed both books and anticipate passing them long to family members wh are interested in the same stories.

"Swanee" Schwanz worked on about 250 churches, hospitals, clinics, and schools in eleven countries. In the process he discovered that construction provided the means for his primary work, to care for and empower those who suffered and to equip those who served the suffering. When his efforts at times proved insufficient for the magnitude of misery he witnessed, compassion compelled him to suffer with his friends. Go as a Way Opens is the story of a man who simply acted out the goodness needed by the people near him.

By Jon Twitchell Here is a powerful tale of a man and his family who were willing to follow God wherever the doors were open. Tales of adventure and intrigue are balanced with thoughtful reflections and insightful observations. The narrative style is easy to read, and the book will challenge your understanding of what it means to be a missionary. Swanee was not a traditional missionary... and this is not a traditional missionary book!I highly recommend this book for individuals, for small groups, and for churches. We will use it as a church-wide reading book later this summer.

Rare personal reflections from “one of our most talented writers” (The New York Times Book Review)Memory and history have been Penelope Lively’s terrain in fiction throughout a career that has spanned five decades. In this “funny, smart, and poignant” (Los Angeles Times) memoir, she offers a glimpse into her influences and formative years, as well as a view of what life looks like from the vantage point of eighty years. Lively traces the arc of her own life, from early childhood in Cairo to boarding school in England to the sweeping social changes of Britain’s twentieth century. She reflects on her early love of archaeology, and on the fragments of the ancients that have accompanied her journey. She also takes an intimate look back at a life devoted to books and writes insightfully about aging.

Dancing Fish and Ammonites: A Memoir, by Penelope Lively

From Booklist Superb British novelist Lively (How It All Began, 2011) begins her “not quite a memoir” with bracing yet graceful reflections on old age. The author of two dozen keenly observant books, Lively is intrigued by this phase of life and its “metamorphosis of the sensibilities.” Her grand subject has always been the workings of the mind, and even as she rues physical miseries, she celebrates age’s fostering of “an almost luxurious appreciation of the world that you are still in.” Lucid and penetrating, Lively looks back to her Egyptian childhood, her fleeing with her mother during WWII, and the shock of cold, bombed London and her parents’ divorce. As a history major at Oxford, the Suez crisis was for her a “baptism by fire, a political awakening.” Ever since then, she keeps “one ear cocked to the clamor of events.” How nimble her episodic stride through the decades, how astute and stirring her perception of memory as “the mind’s triumph over time,” how affirming her gratitude for books and libraries, ancient artifacts and fossils––the endlessly illuminating, tangible past. --Donna Seaman

Review Praise for Dancing Fish and Ammonites“Buoyant and propulsive . . . Dancing Fish and Ammonites is about growing old, about memory and history, about reading and writing. . . . Lively communicates ideas and experiences with flashes of narrative color: the tins of water in which the feet of her crib stood in childhood, to spare her from Cairo’s ants; the layout of a beloved garden; the sight of women in felt hats and gloves as they walked past the bombed-out rubble of wartime Britain.”—The New York Times Book Review“Engaging . . . Lively’s writing shines brightest when her discursive remarks demonstrate the methods and preoccupations that have shaped her fiction.”—The New Yorker“Funny, smart and poignant . . . Admirers of Penelope Lively's many fine novels will find the same lucid intelligence at work in her elegantly written ‘view from old age.’ . . . Memory, history, archaeology, paleontology—for Penelope Lively, they are all part of our individual and collective effort to retrieve lost time. She chronicles her personal engagement in that quest with wit and rue.”—Los Angeles Times“A collection of well-written essays that draw on Lively’s past as she reflects on the present. . . . Lively notes the physical challenges of aging as well as the pleasures she’s given up; some with relief, others with regret. She also reveals a sly sense of humor. . . . Her lifelong love affair with books is the topic of "Reading and Writing," where she mines the quirks of her own personal reading habits and library (her fiction is kept in the kitchen) and the glorious news for readers that ‘The stimulus of old-age reading is the realization that taste and response do not atrophy: you are always finding yourself enthusiastic about something you had not expected to like.’”—Minneapolis Star-Tribune“A gift . . . witty, gentle-humored, sharp . . . Throughout Lively is a keen observer and an engaging narrator. . . . Subjects that may, at first glance, seem random and somewhat scattershot take on the elegant coherence of a deeply satisfying conversation.”—All Things Considered

By Amelia Gremelspacher Lively has entered that time she feared, "that hazard light worn by the old- slow potentially boring, hard going." While I share that status with Lively, I also believe this book has much to inform those entering the ranks of the aged. After all, there appear to be a lot of us and more on the way. The task to place oneself in the world comes as a reality for us all. I agree with Lively that we are a bit invisible, out of the way, no longer the dominant. I also find it a relief. However, present we are, and Lively's thoughts are instructive and sprightly.I am quite charmed by the ways of viewing age in this book. In particular the review of treasured belongings. Of course I also share with her that legal addiction, reading. Her prose is witty, self deprecating, and literate. Lively's own works are part of my library, and it find enchanting the peppering of titles that share her own life. She has a dignity about diminishment that I admire, and a wry regret that I enjoy. Last, but not the least, the memoirs that apply to her own life come as illustrative of a life culminating in her present state.I would urge you to read this book. The thoughts have a comfort and a wisdom. After all, "the poor have always been with us, now the old are too."

This memoir is living history, and Lively is our very lively tour guide By Bookreporter Penelope Lively knows a few things about a few things: history, being a writer and, well, being herself. She’s almost 80 now and speaks with crystal-clear veracity about how the world looks from where she is, standing atop a lifetime of experience and imagination, a world of her own making. And yet, in her latest book, the “memoir” DANCING FISH AND AMMONITES, Lively reminds us that, although we are all treading water in different places, the water is pretty much the same for everyone.Growing up in Cairo, she was whisked off to an English boarding school, and that dichotomy --- the two different cultures and worlds --- marked her particular life journey in a very curious way. Even as she was caught up in the new directions of politics in 20th-century UK, she nursed a lifelong dedication to the study of archaeology. In fact, on a Dorset beach, she once discovered an Egyptian ceramic shard that depicted dancing fish and ammonites. Thus, the title of the book mirrors the juxtaposition of cultures and the special lookout point on life that this has afforded her.Lively writes about growing up in World War II Cairo, and the ways in which English-language authors affected her for life as she made her way out of war-torn Egypt to jolly old England. She writes about Palestine, the Blitz, Syria, and how the experience of childhood manages to circumvent some of the generalities of what these times meant to so many millions of people throughout the world. Her stories about Egypt before and after the war are filled with historical facts, so many that it reads like a primer of day-by-day wartime movement. The romantic dreams of soldiers on patios, enjoying drinks before the escalation of the war killed so many of them, make an appearance as well, as Lively makes good use of intersecting the savage and the sentimental elements during this wartime journey. Finally, Lively moves to London, where she has lived for years. She considers herself a Londoner, she claims, and spends a good deal of time waxing poetic about Victorians and their beautiful architecture, their literature, and the way that their history informed the love she has for the ages-old city. There are visits to the Soviet Union for a summer school through Oxford at which her husband is teaching that test the measure of her young marriage while expanding her understanding of the unnerving ways in which the world could invade her life of the mind and bring unforeseen discomforts into her life. Lively is nothing if not a gentlewoman, someone for whom manners and morals are important in equal measure. And her early travels certainly did nothing to support her youthful beliefs that such things mattered to all people. But learning new, sometimes frightening things and then adapting to those lessons is something Lively considers throughout the book. As she claims, “If you have no sense of the past, no access to the historical narrative, you are afloat, untethered; you cannot see yourself as a part of the narrative, you cannot place yourself within a context. You will not have an understanding of time, and a respect for memory and its subtle victory over the remorselessness of time.” It is delightful to get history lessons from someone who lived through important historical periods and can put them into the kind of individual, personalized perspective that beats any plain history book. This is living history, and Lively is our very lively tour guide.I especially enjoyed the way in which Lively was able to draw on the libraries of books that she has read in her lifetime and have given her so much joy over her many years. Her love of these tomes and her thoughts on the future of the written word are erudite and thought-provoking, to say the least. But DANCING FISH AND AMMONITES is a memoir that allows us a very special peek into the cranial firings of a delightful and accomplished writer to whom the world is a constantly evolving marvel. After this long cold winter, her warm words and apparent love of humankind, along with its trials and tribulations --- as well as its great achievements and progressive thinking --- give us all a reason to celebrate. Thanks to Penelope Lively for sharing her gathered experience for all of us to enjoy. I hope she will write another tome like this after her next 20 years of life on this bright blue marble.Reviewed by Jana Siciliano

By Jo the traveler The British author Penelope Lively has reached the age of 80, and her reflections on her life now, as they relate to the long years she has already lived, are insightful, direct, charming but not at all sentimental. How does she see herself changed, and in what ways is she still the same? What and whom has she gladly put aside? Born in Cairo to ex-pat Brits, she has lived a full and accomplished life, had a clearly-loved husband and family, and traveled widely. This book is an inspiration to anyone facing the last chapters of life, a picture of what remains, and how well it can be lived.

The book introduces readers to literary links between this seventeenth-century prose of Sor María de Jesús de Agreda and other Spanish Baroque masterpieces. The author reexamines the original text and discovers significant dimensions regarding its historical, religious, and literary importance. His research of the novelesque form and "dialogical principles" operative in La mística ciudad de Dios provides convincing evidence of substantive prose literature.

Enlightning, moving and full of wisdom By norman@insatelsa.com Besides all the information that is provided on events on the life of the Holly Virgin Mary that are not usually made known to catholics by the Church, this book is filled with so much knowledge and sagesse that is is imperative to sincerely ask God for the enlightment of the Holly Spirit to really understand the enormous message that pours from this great book. I beg the future readers of this book, to be humble and ask for such enlightment so as not to miss this opportunity to really find the desire to be closer to God and follow the example that the Holly Virgin Mary gives us through the written message of Sor María de Jesus de Agreda on how to live a life for God.

By Janna Charlton Review for The More the Merrier 2 I received a free ARC copy in exchange for a review. All of the stories in this collection are very enjoyable. I will probably go back and reread some of them. There are 7 books in this collection including content ranging from a simple third for a night to spice up a marriage to HEA threesomes. Kink levels range from vanilla Menage to BDSM foursomes. But every story has at least several hot scenes featuring 4 hands, one woman and at least one very passionate night. All of these stories are set in our modern age and have a good "could happen to me" feel. None of these stories leave you hanging or have "to be continued" endings. However all of them leave you wishing the author would write more for those characters. I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys reading about Menage situations.
