“Both a glimpse into daily life at a famous art school, and a tempestuous love affair; a month-long saga of life transformed, memorable to the very end.” – Midwest Book Review “An elegant and eloquent narrative of seduction and sensual awakening, against the backdrop of the last summer of Kokoschka’s famed international art school in the historic city of Salzburg.” – Miriam Frank, author of MY INNOCENT ABSENCE “Beautifully written, sensual and heartfelt. Gloster captures the reader quickly, providing insights into the emotional workings of a young woman’s mind. I believe every woman will relate to this story. As a male I found it eye-opening.” – Robert Tulipan, author of ROCKIN' IN THE NEW WORLD Marcia Gloster was a college student traveling through Europe in the summer of 1963. When she arrived in Salzburg, Austria to study at Oskar Kokoschka’s School of Vision, she envisioned a month of intensive painting, never expecting to find herself swept into a passionate affair. Nor did she imagine her lover to be a married instructor with a long history of indiscretions. Even at a young age, Marcia knew how to protect her heart. But it had never been taken by a man as overwhelming and sensual as Bill Thomson. 31 DAYS is the story of Marcia and Bill in Salzburg. 31 days that would redefine love, sex, passion, and permanence for a woman of twenty; and a month that would resonate in her life forever. Deeply sensual, intensely vivid, and achingly beautiful 31 DAYS is a memoir that lives in all of us.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. It was close to eleven when Bill finally entered the studio. Without so much as a glance at me, he stopped to talk to several of the students, mostly girls, about their paintings.Ignoring the tension I was beginning to feel, I tried to focus on my painting. I was over him, wasn’t I?Suddenly he was behind me. “We have unfinished business,” he said in a soft voice. Surprised, I turned to him. “We do?” I whispered. “Meet me outside on the parapet in five minutes.”“But it’s not time for the break yet.” He nodded. “Five minutes.” It wasn’t a question.I watched him cross the studio to talk with Barbara. As he looked back at me, I again felt the spark. What now? I asked myself. Did I really think he wouldn’t come back to me after last night? Is this considered seduction? He’s not exactly asking me out for dinner and a movie, and I don’t think a quiet lunch is quite what he has in mind. Unless I’m lunch. I think we should get know each other first. But that’s not going to happen, is it?Finishing his conversation, he glanced quickly at me and left the studio.Kate saw his glance and looked at me questioningly. Taking off the shirt I used as a smock, I whispered, “I’m leaving. At least I think I am. I’ll see you later.”Incredulous, she whispered back, “I thought we talked about this. After last night, you’re going somewhere with him? What do you think you are doing?”“I honestly don’t know, but whatever it is, I have to do it.”“I don’t think you should go anywhere near him.”“You’re right, I know it. But there’s something that draws me to him.”Kate shook her head. “You’re making a big mistake,” she said a bit louder. Several students nearby glanced at us. I nodded, but turned and walked quickly to the girl’s bathroom. I ran a comb through my hair and put on some lipstick. Looking in the mirror, I asked myself again, What am I doing?Ignoring my question, I went downstairs to the parapet. It was turning into another hot day and the sun refracted off the whitewashed walls of the fortress. Below, the roofs of the Old City glowed in the late morning light. Bill was standing, his back to the view, staring at me with a small smile as I walked toward him. He looked well, not hung over and confident as usual. There was no hint of last night’s fiasco. “Come with me,” he said in a soft voice. Once again, it wasn’t quite a question.I paused, unsure of what to do.“Yes?” he asked, taking my hand.I was sure this was a mistake especially after last night. But if I went with him, I could never allow myself to regret it, no matter what happened. Somehow I recalled a line from Oscar Wilde, “The only way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it.”“All right,” I whispered. He turned, looking down the mountain. “I don’t want to take the cable car. We’ll walk down the path. We shouldn’t be seen.”We’re going to walk down this mountain? I thought, looking nervously over the wall at a steep, rocky drop. On what, a goat path?I followed him to a narrow but traceable path that snaked down the mountain. Never considering I’d be going for a hike, I was wearing sandals, and it was difficult navigating around the plants and rocks. Turning, I saw the fortress looming above us. I was certain this wasn’t the first time he had taken this path but put the thought out of my mind. Finally reaching the bottom, he took my hand, helping me over some loose stones. We had come out on a narrow cobblestone street not far from the cable station. Still holding my hand, he led me quickly through the back streets of the Altstadt, crossing the river at the Mozartsteg. Once on Steingasse I wasn’t sure which building was his; it had been very late last night. Saying little to each other, we climbed the stairs to his flat and entered the darkened sitting room. Following him to the dimly lit hallway, I saw the door to Kraks’ room on the left and just ahead the small kitchen, where I now knew the vodka was stored. A white tiled bathroom with ancient fixtures was to the right and Bill’s bedroom just beyond. The night before, I had noticed very little. In the daylight I saw that the bed took up most of the stark, white-painted room, leaving a narrow space of only about three feet all around it. A small lamp sat on a walnut night table to the left of the bed and matched a distressed looking headboard that appeared to be attached to the wall. Opposite, a narrow window looked over the tiled roof of the building next door. In the corner, there was a white spindle-back chair with one of his shirts and a knitted tie draped neatly over it. The dark wood floors were scuffed and bare except for a small woven rug between the bed and the door. But on the far side of the bed, the casements of the window with the spectacular view were wide open, letting in a fresh breeze and flooding the room with bright summer light. Except for the soft, white comforter and a small, framed drawing of a reclining nude above the bed, the room had a simple, almost monastic sparseness—a sharp contrast to the man who occupied it.He started to pull down the shades. “Do you have to do that?” I asked tentatively. “It’s so beautiful here and we’re well above the street.”He looked out the window, then back at me. “You know, you’re right,” he said, as though he had never thought of it before. “You won’t mind the light?”I won’t mind the light? Have I lost my mind? What the hell am I doing here? “No,” I whispered. He went to a phonograph sitting on the floor in the corner and put on a record, The Songs of the Auvergne, I found out later. The music was mesmerizing; the very air seemed to shimmer with the exquisite peasant songs sung in a clear soprano voice. I began to relax a little, at the same time well aware that I wasn’t the first girl to experience the magic of those songs. But my natural curiosity had taken over and though I still thought this might turn out to be a mistake, there was something about him that held me there. I looked at him, realizing we had hardly said a word to each other.“Marcia,” he said. “Come here. I want you to kiss me.” Surprised, I moved close to him and kissed him lightly on the lips. He shook his head and backing away from me, he took off his coat and laid it carefully on the chair. Speaking softly, he said, “That wasn’t a kiss. I will teach you how to kiss.”I wasn’t sure I understood what he was saying. I was twenty and I had kissed a fair number of guys without anyone ever complaining. Taking my face in his hands, he said, “Puff out your lips, like a pout. I want to feel the softness of your lips, the inside of your bottom lip. Make them soft, open them, relax them.”Putting my hands on his shoulders, I kissed him. He told me to try again, and again and again, each time telling me in a gentle voice what I was doing, right or wrong. I wondered if my eyes should be open or closed, but after a minute or so it didn’t matter any more. Our kisses were becoming more intense and the room seemed to be becoming warmer. Finally satisfied after a deep kiss that left me trembling, he stepped back and took off his shirt, putting it carefully on the chair along with his jacket. Turning back to me, he said seriously, “It’s too hot for clothes,” and began to undress me.I was wearing the red dress I had bought on Saturday with Kate. His eyes never left mine as he unbuttoned it and slowly slid it off. He unhooked my bra, and I stepped out of my panties, blushing as an unfamiliar desire began to blossom inside, permeating my entire being with heat.Kissing me softly, he slowly started to caress me. “Now I want you to watch me,” he said. Breathless, I sat down on the bed, fidgeting nervously and attempting to cover myself with the comforter, while at the same time looking anywhere but at him. Taking my hand, he told me in a soft but firm voice to look at him. I did, reluctantly. His body was lean but surprisingly strong and unlike the night before, he was very ready for me. I put my hand to his chest, feeling coarse hair and thinking, this is more than the difference between men and boys.Bill became my tutor that day. Taking his time, he taught me how to touch him, when to be firm or gentle, when to move and when to stop, guiding me to enhance his every desire. At the same time, his hands were everywhere, slowly caressing and asking me to tell him how I felt. He was creating sensations I could never have imagined. He was slow, very slow, and every caress felt like feathers touched with fire. He began by kissing my eyes and then my lips, moving to my breasts and down my stomach. He parted my legs and started kissing me between them. I felt his fingers, gently teasing. The soft sounds I heard were coming from me. As my desire became almost unbearable, he slowly arched over me, whispering, “You are on fire.”I had no words to describe what he did to me that day. Tears were running down my face as I moved with him. Cautious about allowing myself an orgasm, there was no denying the intensity of the moment and it was a powerful, pure sensation. He was totally in control and I was way beyond thinking. This was far from the same man I had been with the night before.

A romantic page turner By SWR Few of us get to experience the awakenings of both physical and emotional love at the tender age of 20, and to have these in a romantic setting such as Salzburg in summer is overwhelming for Ms. Gloster's protagonist. We are carried along during this magical time, watching Marcia's loss of innocence before returning home to her childhood room a woman, changed forever. This is a fascinating read - a page turner that keeps us traveling through painting classes, jealous fellow students, and nights of passion with her instructor who taught her more than painting techniques. This is a close look into a young woman's coming of age and makes us wonder what the future holds for her. Hopefully there will be more from the talented and insightful Ms. Gloster.SWR

I put this one off for awhile too (I guess that is what happens when the to-read stack just gets too big.) But after seeing almost perfect reviews (not reading any – I won’t do that until after I’ve written mine.) I decided to pick up this book, a little late (now a month since release- oops!), but better late than never.I’ve also delayed in writing this review as this was really the first memoir/non-fiction book I’ve read, at least since I started reviewing. Can I say I don’t like the characters when they are real? It’s a lot easier in a fiction book, as they aren’t real. Either way, real or made up, I guess they are products of the author, so why does one seem easier to criticize? That all being said, some of the characters in 31 Days just frustrated me to no end, but looking back, that helped this story read like fiction (my usual genre). At times I couldn’t believe that Ms. Gloster remembered events in such details from 40 years ago, but she mentioned keeping a journal. I love that she had the foresight to know this would be a great story to tell. And by great story meaning that it contained a lot of events, great characters (whether I liked them or not!), drama, romance, friendship, art, all in a beautiful setting during a once in a lifetime trip for a young woman.I found myself excited to pick it up each night, but again frustrated. I wanted my heart to fill up with a great romance, but looking back at the subtitle – I was promised seduction, not romance. Maybe you’d anticipate the difference, I didn’t, and there is a big one. I can only picture Bill Thompson as an egotistical, self-centered, womanizing, free-spirited teacher with a bad reputation. Marcia does a great job at describing him as those things, also not your typical Romeo as he wasn’t gorgeous, but he just had a air about him that she couldn’t ignore.I enjoyed the details of Europe and really had a map/picture in my head of just where Marcia studied, walked, ate, and drank (lots of vino!) each day. I liked her as the narrator as being a good balance of emotional and smart when it came to Bill, although at times I would have liked to knock some sense into her, as some of her friends desperately tried to do. It was a good coming of age story. I toyed between 3 or 4 stars, as it was well written, yet something about it just doesn’t have me raving about it.

By Taylorman1 This book was suggested to me by a friend, and, (being a guy), I didn't expect to find myself intrigued by a story of a young woman away at art school in Europe ina the 60's having a steamy romance with her teacher, but I found myself compelled to go back to the book (and not just to read the proverbial "good parts," of which there are many), because I had to find out what would happen next. It transports you to another place and time. The writer has remarkable talent and courage. Recommended-even for men!

Too many of these are a 200-page tome on the author's educational background and personal experience. Not this one! Good structure, easy to follow and good examples. Highly recommend for everyone in education.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A great resource for busy teachers By Michael Milone A great quick read that a busy teacher will enjoy. One of the greatest benefits of the book is that it is written with precise language that prepares the teacher to communicate with peers and parents as well as plan for meaningful instruction.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Realistic and implementable ideas that any teacher can try By Charlie Finally received my book and already have several different ways I plan on helping students build their critical thinking and creativity. The book also has ideas for collaboration and communication, following the subskill areas from the P21 organization, but the ideas I learned the most from was in the creativity and critical thinking sections (which is why I gave this book a 4 out of 5 stars). The quotes at the start of each section of the book are thought provoking and really gets you to think about the importance of the specific 21st century skill. Everyone is talking about technology in education, but not many are showing examples for teachers on how to use technology to teach specific skills or how to connect with the Common State Core Standards. This book does both. I love that amazon has a digital version that is half the price since I am on a teachers' salary!

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Love is in the Jersey air... well, love stinks By H. Bala There's such a groundswell of support for Ms. Marvel, I won't be surprised if she's soon embigenning her bad self in the Marvel Cinematic U. For now, we have to settle for her exploits as read on paper (or online, if that's your jam). MS. MARVEL: CRUSHED collects issues #12-15 as well as S.H.I.E.L.D. #2. It's another first rate TPB mostly brought about by writer G. Willow Wilson and temp artists Elmo Bondoc (issue #12) and Takeshi Miyazawa (issues #13-15). S.H.I.E.L.D. #2 is by Mark Waid and Humberto Ramos.More than any other contemporary teen character in comics, it's Kamala Khan (sorry, Miles Morales) who best recalls the 1960s Peter Parker that struck such a chord back in the day. I think, for a superhero to truly make an impact, their civilian identity has to resonate just as strongly with the readers. Kamala resonates on several levels. Not only does she represent Marvel's push for ethnic diversity, but G. Willow Wilson has done an amazing job at making her so relatable. My 9-year-old niece, who resents reading but loves Kamala, reserved the first Ms. Marvel TPB at the library, never mind that there's a month-long waiting list. Kamala Khan is a Pakistani-American teenager living in Jersey City but under a Muslim household. Yet she comes across as such a normal, typical American girl. She's a bit of an outcast and an uber-nerd - and it tickles that she writes fanfic - and insecure and trying to catch a feel for what she wants to be. And, really, that's essentially Stan Lee's Peter Parker right there, an out-of-sorts kid with amazing powers, and we can absolutely relate to what he's going thru. Same with Kamala. As a plus, we're treated to some much-needed insight into a culture that, post-911, has been kicked to the curb in these parts. But, because it's seen thru Kamala's eyes, it's all made accessible. And what's more accessible than teen crushes? Hold up, though. Issue #12 deals with Kamala's sneaking out to crash a Valentine's Day school dance as Ms. Marvel, only to run into the mischief-making Loki, and, so, cue the mischief. Issues #13-15 is the "Crushed" arc in which Kamala thinks she's found her soulmate ('s what happens when you read too much fanfic, yo), and she gets caught up in the shady dealings in New Attilan prior to the final Inhumans issue, and sweet pop culture references are made re Stars Trek and Wars.I won't wax rhapsodic (again) over how awesome Kamala is - we now take it for granted that, in G. Willow Wilson's hands, Kamala will remain a fully fleshed out character. What's especially fun for me in this arc is that Kamala's best friend/sidekick Bruno gets a chance to shine. I appreciate the lengths he'd go to to respond to Kamala's S.O.S. code. There's a ridiculous vibe to his sub-plot but also a concentrated intensity as he navigates the many impediments that keep him from reaching Kamala. One tiny complaint is the absence of Adrian Alphona's delicate, cartoony art. Still, Bondoc and Miyazawa's styles lend enough whimsy and similarity to Alphona's that I settled in eventually. If there's one seriously rough patch, it's that the storyline's biggest bad, Lineage, comes off as too clichéd and melodramatic. He fits in better in those 1930s serial reels, with the mustache-twirling that he does. And, seriously, Kaboom? As a bonus, S.H.I.E.L.D. #2 has the adorable techhead Jemma Simmons going undercover at Kamala's school... and, then, shenanigans. Also, Ms. Marvel finds a new application for her polymorphing powers. I only wish this story had given more time for Jemma and Ms. Marvel to bond.

By Mike I wont write an extensive review as many others have already eloquently discussed the book. One thing that needs to be mentioned is the change in ART style used for comics making up Volume 3.Adrian Alphona did most of the art for Vol 1 and 2 but is nowhere to be seen in Volume 3. The background jokes, the attention to detail, these are things Alphona is responsible for. The visuals in Vol 3 are OK but are barebones in comparison to the other two works and the highlights of Vol 1 2 were the "Where's Waldo"-esqe sight gags.Still a good read....

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Terrific, fun series with a lot of heart By S. Robert Katz This is a consistently four star book. Certainly one of the best books in Marvel's current catalog. I think people have a tendency to overrate it and talk about it like it's one of the best comic books of all time (it isn't), but it's got a lot going for it. It's well written, very well illustrated and has a lot of personality. It's usually pretty lighthearted, and it's just plain fun to read. This volume is the first that doesn't feature regular artist Adrian Alphona at all. He's one of the best artists in the industry and the best part of the book for me personally, but the fill-in art on this book is still terrific. The shifting art styles aren't too jarring, and it maintains the same tone throughout. Plus the covers are always top notch. One of my standing complaints about this book has been that there isn't really any tension. I think they've aimed for tension-- particularly between Kamala and her family-- but I think it's one of the few elements of this book that hasn't really been successful. This volume takes a step in the right direction. Kamala does experience some consequences of being a superhero, and romance is a major theme of these stories. It still falls short of what I would consider true dramatic tension; I like Kamala quite a lot, yet I'm never really worried about what's going to happen to her.I'd ding this book a little bit for the addition of an issue of SHIELD featuring Kamala, but it's not enough of a drag to affect the star rating. Marvel loves to pad TPBs with additional issues from their characters' appearances in other series, and I don't remember ever feeling like it enriched the experience. This time is no different. It's a missable adventure that takes place at Kamala's school and involves Ms. Marvel teaming up with SHIELD. It's written by Mark Waid (who's a good writer) and drawn by Humberto Ramos (whose distorted art almost gives me an actual headache). This chapter didn't add anything to the story aside from showing Kamala proving herself to SHIELD, but it plays out predictably and won't necessarily lead anywhere. More likely they just wanted to use her to give SHIELD a bump, both in the second issue of its ongoing series and by forcing Ms. Marvel readers to pay for what basically amounts to a sneak peek of the first SHIELD TPB. They do this kind of stuff all the time when stories cross over or feature guest stars, often requiring TPB readers to buy the same story twice if they follow both series. Needless to say, I don't appreciate the practice. To its credit, this story gets right to the point. It's a rare standalone issue, which I do appreciate. As you may or may not know, Ms. Marvel is set to join the Avengers in a few months. I think this is the penultimate book in her ongoing series before that happens. I criticized her crossover with Wolverine in the last volume for feeling a little too soon (though the timing was dictated by Wolverine's scheduled death), and the idea of her joining the Avengers in the near future is WAY too soon (it will probably be argued by some that this is dictated by Marvel's universe-resetting event Secret Wars, but her addition to the team following a major event is an issue of convenience rather than outright necessity). I miss the days when solo heroes could be solo heroes, and I think making her an Avenger so quickly is a bad idea and a real disservice to the character. So enjoy her this way while you can.

Continue on the adventure with The Rancher Takes a Wife, the conclusion to Richmond Hobson's western frontier trilogy!     The interior of British Columbia in the early 20th century is a jungle of swamps, rivers, and grasslands. It's a vast and still barely explored wilderness, whose principal citizens are timber wolves, moose, giant grizzly bears, and the odd human being.      Into this forbidding land, Rich Hobson, Pioneer cattle rancher, brings Gloria, his city-raised bride. Her adjustment to life in the wilderness is sure to be difficult, as is her relationship with Rich and his backwoods cronies. Will Gloria find that she belongs in this strange, harsh land?      Told with wit and wisdom, Hobson recounts a wild true adventure story in the last book of his collection of survival tales. These dramatic tales are described with the humor and vivid detail that have made Hobson's books perennial favorites.

The Rancher Takes a Wife: A True Account of Life on the Last Great Cattle Frontier, by Richmond P. Hobson

About the Author Richmond P. Hobson Jr. (1907-1966) was born in Washington, DC, where he worked with pack outfits, survey crews, and construction gangs, saving, all the while, to buy a cattle ranch. He came to Canada after the stock market crash of the late 1920s. He and his business partner, Panhandle "Pan" Phillips, moved to the interior of British Columbia and established the Frontier Cattle Company in the 1930s. He later married his wife, Gloria, moved to Vanderhoof, British Columbia, and continued ranching while writing about his experiences. Other books by Hobson are Nothing Too Good for a Cowboy and The Rancher Takes a Wife.

His ability to vividly portray the life that he and The Top Hand and later Mrs. Hobson had in the interior of British Columbia is to have been there. It is hard in today's comfortable way of life to envision the situations and dangers that were simply a part of how it was back then. Having grown up in the mountains of the U.S. West, I can only marvel at the abilities of these adventuresome pioneers in the cattle country of B.C. To have met Rich Hobson was of great interest to me... I simply waited too long and he had passed away. The travels and travails through Hobson's life would make an awsome story for a movie. Note: Make sure you read the three books in sequence... and enjoy!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The true Hardships, Struggles and Good times of the wives of Ranchers in British Columbia By Lila Bohr I chose this rating because I like history and I love reading the true stories of how the ranchers and their wives survive during good and hard times. Mostly the hard times in the Ranchers Wives, the scarry things they encountered ( especially Betty) with the bears and the determination and love of land and survival of the family,in British Columbia developing their ranches.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Nothing like a happy ending! By Mardi's Mom I hope I didn't spoil it by saying that it has a happy ending! All three of these books were wonderful to read. Even more so because I and my mother before me, have spent a good bit of our lives traveling to this very area of British Columbia. Some of the relatives of the people in the stories are still there and all have stories of their own. What a magical land!

The book, My Life My Journey, became her voice and her story, a story that I relish. It’s a page turner from the onset. Eileen emerged as a Depression child, who went on to become an outstanding Psychiatric nurse, wife, mother and caretaker before her diagnosis with ALS. It is a story of life and survival told in Eileen’s own words imparted with the wisdom that can only come from an octogenarian.

What she didn't say in the book is how courageously she handled the heartbreak she experienced in her life. She lived a life filled with strength, compassion, honesty and integrity. Her family and friends are blessed to have been a part of her life.

Callender I am honored to have met Ms. Rough, but even if I hadn't, I would be eager to recommend her novella-length work. While this, generally, is a story about Ms. Rough's journey to learn more about her Estonian great-grandmother, her lush, insightful observations illustrate a universal longing for adventure as well as the desire to understand one's past (so as to fully live in the present). As I knew nothing--NOTHING--about Estonia, I was delighted to be invited into Ms. Rough's adventures. I now have a colorful sense of Estonia's earthy people, their language, the smell of the sea and the simplicity of their lives . . . and yes, the temperature of their saunas.I highly recommend this jewel of a story.

This short, fast-paced story describes how the author and a dear friend abandon family and work to vacation in...Estonia, a tiny former-Soviet-bloc country famed to be one of the unhappiest places on earth. Why travel to such a place? The author's great great grandmother lived and died there, never following her children to North America. Rough packs a grainy photo of her great great grandmother standing in a field, and the two friends drive across the tiny country, following dirt roads and knocking on doors, trying to figure out just which field it could be and what such a life might have been like. Along the journey, the author reflects on women's roles past and present, as well as the writer's life, and one begins to wonder who, exactly, is alone: the girls on their vacation? the great great grandmother? women as a sex? or the writer, alone at her keyboard, trying to make sense of it all? This is a tale vividly told, pleasantly paced, and with just the right mix of observation, rumination, and humor. Rough renders the Estonian landscape and people beautifully, and we come to understand their sadness through Rough's brief, interesting forays into the culture's history. One delights in the various sauna scenes where we glimpse the aging female body--hello, pinkies!--quite more than we expect (and at least this reader could relate quite more than I would hope). THE GIRLS, ALONE made me laugh out loud and tear up in the same sitting. And one sitting is all it takes to read this lovely little story. Highly recommended!

A unique travel narrative By Jennifer Heidelberger I was mesmerized by the narrative descriptions of Estonia, a country and region not known for tourism. Bonnie wove her quest for family connection into the winding roads of this foreign land in a way that kept my interest and left me wanting more.

This book is for those that would like to live in joy and peace, are facing a banana peel field (illness, loss of a loved one, money problems, or a failing relationship), are serious about changing their life, or need to figure out how to be positive instead of negative. Part memoir and part self-help, this guide draws inspiration from the author’s cancer survival story, which is told in an inimitable and straight-talking way, and her GAAB (Going Above And Beyond) Life 21-Day Challenge. I loved reading this book and I felt like Katharine was talking to me over a cup of coffee and sharing some of her most personal moments. She uses her own struggles and triumphs to communicate life's ups and downs to the reader. This book was especially helpful to me after going through a significant loss this year. The motif of rainbows and banana peels is applicable to nearly everyone's life. There are always going to be bright days and unfortunately there are slip ups. The GAAB challenge included in this book is a great approach to clean eating and a healthier mind, body, and spirit.

This is the true story of a woman who made headline news in 1958 for welfare fraud, and then was raped by the attorney hired to defend her. Gertie is the true story of an African-American woman navigating the post-slavery era of the early 1900s. This is a portrait of an individual who will not be defined by her second-class citizenship. It is based on the author’s recollections of her cousin Gertie, a forthright woman who never lacked for audacious adventure. At the turn of the century with the odds stacked against her as a black woman in a society divided by gender and oppressed by race, Gertie is outspoken and unafraid. To survive, she will use everything at her disposal from her lively wit to her use of hoodoo root workers. Told in traditional oral African-American syntax, this biography reveals Gertie’s belief in self-preservation, folk healing, and the improvised solutions fostered by dire poverty. As an independent woman in a country run on racial repression, Gertie will have many encounters with the law. Through her freewheeling life, readers will get to see many folk remedies and country spells that Gertie used to support her friends and fend off her enemies. One of the more humorous episodes comes in a chapter that covers “sugar shit tea.” This unique brew leads to binding potions for sex and love that are unbreakable. Bawdy yet moralizing, these types of magical folk encounters crop up throughout the lively book. By today’s standards, author Michele A. Phelps Brown admits that, “Gertie is coarse.” However, she encourages the reader to view the full social context of Gertie’s life as a second class citizen with limited rights. It surveys the various trials in her life and chronicles the many actions she took to weather her one hundred and one years of life. Living amidst her rural Georgia setting, Gertie has little time for the platitudes of progressive reformers. Instead, she exposes the setting and era for what it was. “All freedom did for us was make us pay money to be slaves,” says Gertie. Yet she will defy her circumstances to lead a life of integrity.

The stories of her life captivated all who heard them, and Michele promised herself to one day write Gertie's life story in all of it's glory. Thus, this book is written as told to her by Gertie. Michele A. Phelps Brown was born and raised in Harlem, New York City. After she received her B.S and M.S degrees, she married and relocated to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, where she was employed as an educator with the Broward County School System, until her recent retirement. She lives in Florida with her husband and is the mother of three children. Michele continues to have a close relationship with her cousin Gertie, who is currently 101 years old, and counting.

By Natasha Minoso I’d like to start off this review by saying this: Ceci Frost is brilliantly brutal with her words and leaves you aching for a stranger’s personal pain. The amount of empathy that this story evoked in me surpassed any and all other stories I have read to date. I guess it’s because of the raw honesty that Ceci spills onto this story’s pages, the almost effortless way she unloads her grief and speaks with a voice so bare and real that you can’t help but feel like you are experiencing everything with her.“Someone once told me after the loss of my momma, “things will never be the same, they will just be different, and there will be beauty in that,” and different is what it has been.”Ceci Frost writes about the story of her life – growing up with just her mother, the feeling of living without her father, the absolute agony she went through finding out her mother was sick, and everything in between then and now.“In one second, your life can change. In one second, life can be born and life can end. In one second, we can decide how we are going to react to our surroundings. One second can change the millions of seconds that follow it."One aspect I actually really enjoyed was reading about Ceci’s faith. I’m not particularly religious, but I can appreciate someone else’s faith and how wholeheartedly they believe in something greater than just us. It was beautiful seeing the world through Ceci’s eyes without feeling like she was forcing her faith or religion on you. It was refreshing and freeing to learn more about another person’s beliefs and how they impact their life every single day.“Bodies are houses to our souls. They are very temporary and delicate.”When I first went into this story, I had this idea that maybe Ceci would be giving a lesson in grief, a how-to that might help out someone else who was going through the same thing. I was wrong – in the best possible way. She wasn’t teaching you how to get over grief; she was teaching you how to live with grief, live life in spite of the grief. There is something so beautiful about understanding that, something so innately human, something so real about acknowledging that a person is just a person and seeing how courageous and brave they are with the cards they are dealt.“The one thing you can predict when it comes to the journey of grief is that it will be unpredictable.”I encourage everyone and anyone to read this memoir – if only to give yourself a chance to see life through another person’s eyes and understand someone else’s way of living. You will learn that bad things will happen to good people, no matter what, but it will be okay, especially when you ask for help because it is always okay to need somebody else.“We aren’t meant to do life alone; we need people on our team, cheering us on, encouraging us, and we need to be that for other people. Together, we are better rounded.”

Memoir and How-To-Cope Book By Curiouser Editing One of the best things about this memoir is that it goes beyond the story and offers advice on coping in the third part of the book. When you hear the story of how Ceci lost her mother, it touches you in such a raw way—but when Ceci walks YOU through how to deal with your own loss, I think that shows the true integrity and compassion of the author. Heartfelt, beautiful, and real.

She not only tells her own incredible story but also shares what she has learned on her journey to helps others who have been or are dealing with grief.
