Wagner This is it -- from the inside. All the doubts, misgivings, and triumphs, coupled with the conventional "hurry up and wait" of the military. Finally based in Turkey, fighting an air war against an imposing enemy with nothing more than electronic intercepts and scramblers, this is a fascinating look into just what it was like to leave home for the unknowns and face the world's fourth largest military force in the interests of liberating Kuwait and protecting Saudi Arabia. Strip the glamour from the long ;hours, infrequent meals, stark terror, and dangers of chemical, biological or nuclear attack and take a hard look at the men and women who endured and overcame under harsh real-world conditions. Well worth the time.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Extremely Realistic!! By yukonjack William Stanek has definitely been there, done that. The fear he described the first time in combat was right on. I am speaking solely from the airman's perspective, ground combat is a different animal. The way he described those who are afraid but do not let themselves be consumed by it. They are still able to do their jobs. Then there are those who s*** their pants and freeze up. The only thing you need to pay attention to, this story is not the complete book. You will need to buy the other three. I have done it and I am starting on number 2 book right now. Well done mr. Stanek. Buy this book!

Good tool for teachers By Bridget_K I am a first year Spanish teacher in an alternative certification program and purchased this book looking for ideas. There is so much in this book that it was overwhelming. There are literally chapters and chapters full of things I have been able to use in my classroom, as well as some useful theoretical information that backs up the more practical suggestions. It doesn't get 5 stars because culture is relegated to a single short chapter and is largely reduced to heros and holidays. There is also not much information about modification for and accomodation of special needs. But, overall, I highly recommend this to new foreign language teachers.

I am absolutely satisfied with my purchase as the book provides ideas for incorporating strategies and activities based on multiple intelligences and aspects of brain research. I bought this with another one of Blaz's books "Differentiated Instruction - A guide for Foreign Language Teachers" which is my absolute favourite. Try them both and you will not regret it. By TLJ Larry Dandridge has captured on these pages the lives of US Army Huey helicopter crews in the Mekong Delta of South Viet Nam. He paints with gripping detail of what life was like for member of the 121st Soc Trang Tigers and Vikings as they performed day in and day out during the years of 1968 and 1969. Having been there with Larry, I can vouch for it accuracy and the difficulty faced supporting the Viet-Namese and US troops in finding, fixing the locations of a very elusive and resilient enemy.These young flight crews were lead by 21 and 22 year old pilot and even younger flight crews in combat assaults, raids and attacks in the most difficult terrain such as: 7 Sisters Mountains which contained the difficult high rock fortress Nui Coto, the huge vast swamp of the U Minh forest which hid POW Army Major Nick Rowe for 5 years before his escape in 1968, the vast Plain of Reeds and other the triple canopy jungles along the lower Mekong and Bassac Rivers.Regardless if you were there or not, Larry Dandridge's work takes you there front and center. His work is the real deal and factual. The insertions and extractions when the lead was flying and the pucker factor was maxed at a "10" are difficult for anyone to transcribe. I hope Larry someday writes this a fictional story because I think he would get wider readership.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Update of Charge of the Light Brigade By Thomas J Brown W. Larry Dandridge book is indeed a ‘soldiers story’. For any reader of military history and for all armchair generals, it belongs on the same book shelf as “The Red Badge of Courage, “All Quiet on the Western Front” “God is My Co-Pilot” and “The Forgotten Soldier”. It is now on mine. Beside the body of the book itself, of equal value were his Appendices, especially Appendix C “Lessons Learned”.Warrant Officer Dandridge’s writing takes us to the dawn of Army tactical helicopter operations in Vietnam. The student of war learns of ‘Slicks’ ‘Dust Offs’, ‘Snakes’ .‘S*** Hooks’ ,’Loach’, ‘Hogs’ and ‘Frogs’. These are the brief one-word definitions used by soldiers to describe their war horses that took them into battle. Warrant Officer Dandridge puts man and machine into the tactical and operational context of ground combat with simple straight forwardly written vignettes about he and his fellow pilots’ experiences in I Corp. Not all horses came back but some riders survived. Not all pilots came back but some helicopters survived and on occasions, neither returned to base. Despite the grim statistical losses, and Warrant Officer Dandridge’s descriptions of gun battles between helicopters in ground hover with VC and NVA soldiers feet from them firing small arms, grenades and rockets, II was in wonder how many men and machines did survived, including Warrant Officer Dandridge.I checked with an old friend who was an Army Medic in II Corp. He not only confirmed much of Warrant Officer Dandridge’s stories but retold of one where he saw dozens of Army attack helicopters lined up on an airfield in echelon in ground hover in support of what turned out to be a twelve hour battle grinding battle just miles from his base. As one helicopter took off to support ground troops in close contact, one was returning low on fuel and with no ammunition. It refueled, rearmed and the crew grabbed a bite to eat then took its place in line. From mid-afternoon till three in the morning, a non-stop chain saw of death and destruction took off from his airfield! No wonder, as Warrant Officer Dandridge noted, the enemy most feared the Army Tigers, Vikings and Vipers. As I closed the book, I could not help hear the echo’s of history’s other previous cavalry stories starting with John Ford’s “She Wore a Yellow Ribbon”, the tune of “Garryowen” playing and ending with Tennyson’s “Charge of the Light Brigade”.Thanks Warrant Office Dandridge and to all your fellow pilots who served so well and honorably in a war whose lessons learned are starting to fade from memory. Your book is an important contribution to both the Army’s corpus of knowledge and an inspiration to generations who have yet to experience the smell of cordite in the morning and the black out from the fatigue of grinding combat in the evening. By Midwest Book Review 100 Games and Activities for the Introductory Foreign Language Classroom offers a wealth of stimulating, enchanting and effective games and activities that students of a foreign language can engage in rather than learning by rote or performing drills. All exercises can be adapted to classes of any foreign language. Each activity lists its central topic for quick reference, the required materials (which are always inexpensive), the lesson objective, instructions, and spare notes. Individual activities range from simulating a catwalk from a fashion show to have students practice the names of articles of clothing, to a silent pantomime game for reviewing vocabulary, to a "total body ball" game for reviewing different body parts by calling out which parts of the body a student is allowed to receive the rubber playground ball with. Especially recommended as a shake-'em-up supplement for teachers of grade school and high school foreign language classes.

By Teacher Mom I'm very impressed with the multitude of different games and activities presented within this book! It's perfect for its purpose. The games are varied and organized according to themes that would be common in the introductory world language classroom: time, numbers, months, greetings, clothing, basic vocab, etc. It's a book that can be used with just about any world language that I can imagine.Some of the games require preparation, but others are great for those thinking on your feet moments when something's just not working and you want to pique the interest of your students. A few of the activities are really great resources to leave for a guest teacher in case of an emergency absence when your plans won't work or you're unable to leave plans for the day.This isn't a great homeschool resource. Although some of the activities work, a lot are dependent upon multiple participants.I highly recommend this book if you are the teacher of a world language classroom.

It's full of really creative games and activities, many of which get the children up and moving around. I use it all the time, and the kids love everything that I've tried.

By Anara Guard I made the mistake of opening Stephanie Sorensen’s book Ma Doula at nine o’clock in the evening. After midnight, I forced myself to set it aside unfinished! But even in my dreams, it seemed as if I heard the calm tones of her practical and wise voice. I recommend this book highly for anyone considering having a doula at their births, for those who have given birth and those about to. If you enjoy “Call The Midwife,” you will love Ma Doula.As Stephanie says on her blog, her book is not about herself, it is about the courageous women and men from across the globe who come here with hope, who dare to fall in love, make babies, and dream of providing a better life for their families. Ma Doula tells stories of births among women from many cultures and situations. In the telling, we learn of their strength and courage, their fear and pain, and how they persevere through situations that call upon them to be more present and open than they may have thought possible. Photographs show us the glowing results of some births: happy toddlers, peaceful infants.Stephanie has years of experience as a mother of five, midwife, lactation consultant, and now doula. As a doula, she is a birth coach, committed to being with the mother throughout her labor and delivery. Nursing shifts come and go but Stephanie stays, always presenting the parents with their options, encouraging them to make their own choices and supporting those decisions. She clearly favors less intervention but is never opposed to medical advances that can save lives or prevent harm.Our paths crossed when we both lived in St. Paul decades ago. Most Interesting: Doula’s Role in Baby’s “Birth Day” By ConnieA “It was the most amazing thing happening in the whole world at that very moment, and we were allowed to witness it.”The author wrote these prophetic words about the moment of birth. Her interesting stories are from her point of view as a doula, a trained person that a mother-to-be hires to advocate and support her during the pregnancy, and especially leading up to and the actual delivery.Stephanie has worked with many mothers who are new immigrants, which often means the woman has little-to-no English. Some of the families she has advocated for are local, some living in homeless shelters or low-income. Some are from S.E. Asia, Somalia, Ethiopia, and others are Hmong, Amish or Hispanic. Often a translator is needed to ensure that the family understands their options at time of delivery.Many of these women are from cultures where their body is covered—or she is extremely private. Once the translating service sent a man, causing the woman in labor much humiliation—even though Stephanie had him talk from behind a curtain.The role of a doula is to advise and support—but not give a firm opinion about what doctors, nurses or midwives might recommend. Once the mother and father make a decision, the doula is there to help make it happen, unless something serious causes the medical people to recommend another path to a safer birth.My favorite part was about often a first-time dad holding his newborns—and Stephanie asks him to take off his shirt so his and the baby’s skin is touching. This is called skin-to-skin bonding, which a mother does when she nurses.I am a big fan of “Call the Midwife” on public TV. The show takes place over several years following WWII, and now it is 1961. The ongoing and intimate care that the midwives give reminds me of the work of doulas and midwives in Stephanie’s book.

As part of the birthing team, she has a ringside seat and over thirty stories of how the families, midwife, doctors, and hospitals adapt birthing methods to fit the situation. Women considering delivery options would benefit from reading this book.

It's much shorter than PM Kendall and Charles Ross' books (about 100 pages) but sums up the history of R3 excellently. I highly recommend it for both the casual as well as serious reader as the book contains extensive notes.
