Following the death of his little sister and the publication of his New York Times bestselling memoir The Little Way of Ruthie Leming, Dreher found himself living in the small community of Starhill, Louisiana where he grew up. But instead of the fellowship he hoped to find, he discovered that fault lines within his family had deepened. Dreher spiraled into depression and a stress-related autoimmune disease. Doctors told Dreher that if he didn't find inner peace, he would destroy his health. Soon after, he came across The Divine Comedy in a bookstore and was enchanted by its first lines, which seemed to describe his own condition. In the months that followed Dante helped Dreher understand the mistakes and mistaken beliefs that had torn him down and showed him that he had the power to change his life. Dreher knows firsthand the solace and strength that can be found in Dante's great work, and distills its wisdom for those who are lost in the dark wood of depression, struggling with failure (or success), wrestling with a crisis of faith, alienated from their families or communities, or otherwise enduring the sense of exile that is the human condition. Inspiring, revelatory, and packed with penetrating spiritual, moral, and psychological insights How Dante Can Save Your Life is a book for people, both religious and secular, who find themselves searching for meaning and healing. Dante told his patron that he wrote his poem to bring readers from misery to happiness. It worked for Rod Dreher. Dante saved Rod Dreher's life-and in this book, Dreher shows you how Dante can save yours.

Skip this and read The Divine Comedy itself By Rod Anderson "The Divine Comedy" by Dante Aligheri is widely accepted to be one of the great works of human creativity, expressing universal truths about human nature. Anything that leads a reader to read "Divine Comedy" is a good thing. To the extent that this book, "How Dante Can Save Your Life" does that, it is useful.Beyond that, however, it is hard to sort out exactly what this book is. The body of each chapter weaves description and summary analysis of a selected canto or two of "Divine Comedy" with autobiographical passages on how that canto (allegedly) applied to the author’s life. A text box of watered-down and not all that helpful self-help tips appears at the end of the chapter. Some credit is due the author for those portions that directly discuss "Divine Comedy" as they include interesting takes and ideas, especially in the "Purgatorio" and "Paradiso" parts. But I'm generally familiar with "Divine Comedy" -- I fear somewhat for the reader of this book who has not read "Divine Comedy", as the content of this book seems to assume some level of familiarity even though it says none is assumed. So as an introduction to "Divine Comedy" to the unfamiliar, this book may work to a limited extent. But this book is more an over-sharing autobiography than anything else. The author apparently believes that his personal journey toward healing using "Divine Comedy" will serve as an example of how the reader can do the same. But this is an odd approach: "Divine Comedy" on its own beautifully accomplishes this already, in a way that applies to all humans and all manner of sin. To view "Divine Comedy" through the glasses of one particular human necessarily distorts and diminishes its power, making it far less universal and applicable to the general reader. This distortion is magnified in the case of this book, in which that one particular human, the author himself, is portrayed as a very peculiar man with his own very peculiar issues that wouldn't seem to extrapolate well to the general reader. Not the best approach for a self-help book. The book doesn’t work as an autobiography either, in that the reader has little reason to be interested in the author to begin with, and won’t gain much more reason from progressing through the book. Perhaps those readers who are familiar with and enjoy the author’s previous work may care about the author’s life experiences, but that makes this book largely a fan club piece instead of something more meaningful. Since I’m not in the fan club to start with, I found the autobiographical segments to be quite frustrating -- just as a chapter was getting interesting in discussing one of the cantos, here comes yet another chunk of how the author was having issues with his family. Worse yet, it’s the same issues over and over again (which are largely portrayed as the fault of his family). The whole thing rings hollow.A final point is that this book largely ignores the primary thrust of "Divine Comedy" -- eternal punishment and reward. Perhaps this comes from the author’s attempt to appeal to non-believers. But if the goal of the author is to get the secular to read something to improve their life here, he should write about something else. The power of "Divine Comedy" is in finding God, not in avoiding stress. It isn’t about saving your life, as the title claims, it’s about saving your soul.My suggestion to the reader who is drawn to this book: read enough of this book to get interested in reading "Divine Comedy", and then set this book aside and get started.

Poss I follow Rod Dreher on Twitter, read his previous book The Little Way of Ruthie Leming, and read a lot of what he writes for The American Conservative, so when he began blogging through The Divine Comedy I read his posts on it with great interest. Dante’s Comedy is my favorite book and one I’ve read and reread for many years. When Dreher announced that the Comedy would be the subject of his next book I was elated, and preordered a copy. I couldn’t disagree with the title: How Dante Can Save Your Life. He has certainly changed mine. I was not surprised, reading Dreher’s columns, that he responded to it, too.How Dante Can Save Your Life picks up in the years following the events of his other memoir, The Little Way of Ruthie Leming, which chronicles his sister’s fight with cancer. Following her death, Dreher had picked up and, after decades away from home, moved back to Louisiana, trying to reconnect and mend tattered relationships with his family. Little Way was the story of how he came to do that. How Dante Can Save Your Life is the story of how his attempt failed.Despite returning home, Dreher recounts that his relationships with family—especially his father and nieces—were terrible. I like Dreher a lot and value his opinions, but having read his work for several years now, he strikes me as a classic oversharer. Reading Little Way, I could only wonder, despite being moved to tears, what his family thought of such a soul-baring memoir. In my experience, a tell-all—even an affectionate, nostalgic tell-all—alienates people. This book gave me an answer: “I showed Mike the manuscript of Little Way before I turned it in, and asked him to let me know if he wanted me to make any changes. He did not ask for changes, but as I learned later, the book displeased him greatly. He thought I had used his wife’s death to tell a story about myself” (30). As a reader, I too had had a hard time escaping this impression. The resentment of his family revealed, Dreher floundered in depression, lapsed into the doldrums of persistent illness and strained his relationships with his own wife and children. He finally saw a therapist, adopted a strict prayer regimen at the insistence of his priest, and, coincidentally, picked up Dante.Dante’s Divine Comedy, Dreher writes, is not only great literature but “also immensely practical.” The Comedy begins with a fictional version of the poet lost “in a dark wood, for the straight way was lost.” Not one to appreciate fiction, much less poetry, Dreher identified with Dante and kept reading. Like Virgil, sent by Divine Love to lead Dante to salvation, Dante was sent to lead Dreher out of his own dark wood. The book follows Dreher through his spiritual and physical recovery as he read through the Comedy. For Dreher, this meant salvation from alienation, broken relationships, and the misery and frustration caused by—and causing—both. Just as Dante’s journey through the revelatory levels of Hell, the suffering of Purgatory, and finally the harmonies of Paradise was, so Dreher’s journey was long, arduous, purifying, and deeply moving.I really liked How Dante Can Save Your Life, but I still wonder about the propriety of what Dreher has chosen to share with his readers—especially considering that one of the sources of strife within his family is his previous book. Dreher writes with great feeling and sincerity but, as another reviewer has noted, the narration sometimes comes across as self-pitying, even in the later stages when he has learned how selfish he is and is striving toward greater humility. Even as he learns to let go of his bitterness and anger, he reminds himself over and over again of the incidents that made him bitter and angry. The book also veers—just occasionally—into stereotypical self-help rhetoric. “Suffering comes to everyone,” writes Dreher. “It’s the human condition. What you do with that suffering determines whether or not you remain an earthbound caterpillar or metamorphose into a butterfly” (220). And from near the beginning of the book: “The answers and peace you seek are within you” (13), a statement completely at odds with Dante’s story of salvation through divine intervention. But that kind of self-help cliche is only occasional, and the former problem—what makes me wonder about the propriety of Dreher’s project—is just the negative side of his candor. Dreher mostly mines solid wisdom from Dante’s rich epic, and his honesty about his own failings is the book’s strong suit most of the time.As Dreher promoted his book I balked at the idea of treating Dante as a self-help guide. I want to value art as art, “practical” value being an unhealthy modern and particularly American obsession. Dante especially is someone with far more to say than bullet-pointed lists of self-help advice. But Dreher mostly won me over. How Dante Can Save Your Life is, importantly, “not . . . literary analysis, [but] a personal view” (xv-xvi). And Dante himself described four levels on which his art could be read and interpreted, writing that he intended his Comedy to be a hopeful work, one that would illustrate God’s salvation for people and help them toward it. After all a "comedy" is, in the medieval sense, a story with a happy ending. Dreher’s project is a continuation of that work, and for that I deeply appreciate it.Recommended.

I have never read Dante and liked the idea of a personal journey through a piece of classic literature. The problem is that the journey was uncomfortably personal. Dreher is way too free with his family's history, grudges, conversations and failings. He comes to the conclusion that he is to love his family whether they show him love and acceptance or not, but I fail to see how this book will do anything but further the strain or sever those relationships. I also wonder how his therapist, Mike, and his priest, Father Matthew, feel about the book and the fact that their private conversations are in it.My biggest critique is that this book is 75% about Dreher and 25% about Dante. Dreher seems obsessed with how he thinks and reacts. Throughout the book, he uses narrative techniques to talk about himself: "I took a sip from the large plastic tumbler of ice water I kept with me at all times, since the Epstein-Barr virus left me perpetually thirsty" (p. 172). The book becomes less a testimony and more a personal narrative in which he is the hero. And he says as such (p. 219). This was distasteful. If people who talk about themselves all the time bug you, you might want to pass on this book. Dreher is the main character and everyone else--even Dante--only has a supporting role.Dreher's analysis of Dante, when it is allowed to muscle between Dreher's storytelling and introspection, is good. I wanted more of it. I really want to read The Divine Comedy, so there is that.Another problem with the book is that Dreher seems to have an epiphany every chapter. This is just unrealistic. He also seems to equate epiphany with growth and learning with change. Further, Dreher hears Dante in his priest's sermons, in conversations with his therapist and, well...everywhere. He takes a good thing and makes more of it than is wise. It might be in Dreher's best interests to fast from The Divine Comedy for a while. In the end, Dreher shares too much about his family that I am guessing his family did not give him permission to share and builds a narrative around his self-obsession and reading of Dante. I can't recommend it to anyone.

A full-length Satinmaid novel!

For her whole life Jeanette felt like she should have been male but had suppressed those urges and hidden them from everyone. When she finally admits her feelings to her husband Rick and tells him that she wants to be the man in their relationship he is shocked and confused. Desperate not to lose the love of his life and determined to make her happy, Rick finds himself giving up more and more of the masculine aspects within their relationship to please her. She takes over as his husband and he finds himself slipping unwittingly into the role of being her wife and as her masculinity increases, Jeanette pushes him further and further into femininity.

It starts with small things like Jeanette wanting to be the only one who wears boxers or pyjamas but his 'husband' wants more and the more masculine she becomes the more feminine Rick finds himself becoming.

How far will he go to please his husband and how feminine is he willing to become to keep the woman of his dreams, now that she is a man?

Jeanette is now the husband and if Rick wants to stay with her, his only option is to become her wife!

Shyly, Rick finished adjusting his bra then picked up the skirt. Jeanette’s eyes were twinkling with anticipation as she watched him step into it, pull it up round his waist and concentrate on fastening it. He looked so nervous as he turned to see what she thought, his first time wearing a skirt for his husband. Jeanette nearly jumped up off the bed in amazement at how sexy he looked, with his long hair still untidy from sleep, the gorgeous new bra and the wonderfully flirty little skirt that showed off his legs perfectly and immediately made her want to reach under it and molest him. Rick blushed and felt a rush of girly arousal at the naked lust on his husband’s face. “Like it?” he asked her nervously. “You’re the sexiest sight I’ve ever seen,” she breathed huskily. “I can’t believe you’re mine or that you do such incredible things for me.” With a timid but very sweet smile he turned back to pick up the fluffy pink jumper and pulled it on over his head. Jeanette was stunned by how cute it looked with the skirt, the padding of the bra beneath it giving it subtle but adorable feminine curves. She just sat there watching in amazement as her sexy, girly wife brushed his hair into those cute little bunches that suited him so well, carefully applied his lipstick, eyeliner and mascara then pulled on a darling pair of pink ballet flats and finished the whole outfit off with his pretty watch and necklace. She almost couldn’t believe that this gorgeous young lady in front of her had been her husband a few short months ago.

Ronald Carter Emeritus Professor By Amazon Customer ‘The impact of English as a global language in many spheres of international life has been both rapid and dramatic. This very timely volume on the globalisation of English language education has much to offer readers. Not only does it draw together important theoretical perspectives from which to position the overall theme of the volume, but it also provides rich accounts of international pedagogical processes and practices. It sets out important agendas relating to innovation and change into the future, while at the same time including realistic debates on the challenges involved. The scale and depth of this volume will make an important contribution for several years to come.’Anne BurnsProfessor of TESOL, The University of New South Wales, AustraliaProfessor Emerita, Aston University, UK‘This is very much a book for 21st century English language education. Focussed on the impact of globalisation on language use and language practices, the contributors raise a number of central and challenging questions in both theory and practice, critically probing key issues for teaching and learning and the place of English and Englishes in learning across a range of different educational settings. Highly recommended.’Ronald CarterEmeritus Professor, The University of Nottingham, UK‘English is widely regarded as a global language with myriad uses and roles that are constantly changing. This thematically coherent edited book collection provides fresh perspectives on conceptual issues and informed discussions on pedagogic practices. This book is an invaluable resource for practising teachers, teacher educators, students of Applied Linguistics and researchers alike.’Constant LeungProfessor of Educational Linguistics, King's College London, UK‘This book is both informative and stimulating. The contributions provide practitioners and theorists with an impressive panorama of what is happening globally in their professional world. In selected but representative parts of that world, they focus on details and processes, often in areas not often dealt with in accessible publications. The book will appeal equally to the newcomer who seeks orientation and to the experienced reader who wants to reflect on where we are and where we are going in English language education.’William LittlewoodHonorary Professor, Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong SAR, China‘The chapters in this impressive edited book collection offer unique and fascinating perspectives on theoretical debates, issues and challenges involved in language teaching and language teacher education today. With contributions by established as well as emerging scholars, this book provides an invaluable account of how language teaching policies and practices world-wide are responding to issues raised by the globalisation of English. A hard-hitting and hopeful story about the dangers of blind faith—and the power of having faith in yourself. Now a Morris Award finalist and Golden Kite Honor Book!  The Kevinian cult has taken everything from seventeen-year-old Minnow: twelve years of her life, her family, her ability to trust. And when she rebelled, they took away her hands, too. Now their Prophet has been murdered and their camp set aflame, and it's clear that Minnow knows something—but she's not talking. As she languishes in juvenile detention, she struggles to un-learn everything she has been taught to believe, adjusting to a life behind bars and recounting the events that led up to her incarceration. But when an FBI detective approaches her about making a deal, Minnow sees she can have the freedom she always dreamed of—if she’s willing to part with the terrible secrets of her past.Gorgeously written, breathlessly page-turning and sprinkled with moments of unexpected humor, this harrowing debut is perfect for readers of Emily Murdoch's If You Find Me and Nova Ren Suma's The Walls Around Us, as well as for fans of Orange is the New Black.

The Sacred Lies of Minnow Bly, by Stephanie Oakes

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—Minnow Bly survives when her hands are chopped off as punishment for refusing to wed the self-proclaimed "Kevinian" Prophet, leader of an oppressive, polygamous Montana wilderness cult in which she was raised. When someone sets fire to the Community and the Prophet is killed, Minnow runs away. Furious, frightened, and heartbroken, she lashes out and commits a hideous random assault, almost kicking a mentally disturbed young man to death—hence the gruesome, startling opening sentence, "I am a blood-soaked girl." Imprisoned for this crime in a juvenile detention facility until age 18, Minnow is coaxed to reveal the truth about the demise of the Community. As she struggles to understand the world around her and to choose what secrets to keep or let go, her tough yet wise cellmate Angel, murderer of an uncle for sexual assault, becomes a friend and guide. Minnow learns to read; discloses a secret, forbidden romance with Jude, a biracial boy she met in the forest; and finally reveals what actually happened the night the Community went up in flames. Based on Grimm's fairy tale, "The Handless Maiden," the powerful, fluent writing; engrossing and well-layered mystery; compelling characters; and provocative ideas about family, faith, honesty, loyalty, and friendship are engaging. VERDICT Ellen Hopkins devotees and fans of The Chosen One by Carol Lynch Williams (St. Martin's Griffin, 2009) will seek this one out.—Diane P. Tuccillo, Poudre River Public Library District, CO

Beautifully written and filled with emotion, THE SACRED LIES OF MINNOW BLY is an unforgettable tale By Teen Reads Twelve years of Minnow Bly’s life have been stolen by the twisted but charismatic leader of the Kevinian cult, the Prophet. When her father became a deacon for the cult when she was five, everything in Minnow’s life changed. They live in the woods with no communication with the outside world. Women in the cult are married off young and their only purpose is to have children --- they are not even allowed to learn how to read. Men have several wives and serve as the Prophet’s deacons. Everyone seems content to believe all that the Prophet tells them --- everyone but Minnow, that is. Slowly she begins to question the things that the Prophet has taught them, especially after she meets Jude, a boy her age who also lives out in the woods with his family. Jude teaches her about life outside the cult, and the two become fast friends. However, things take a turn for the worse when Minnow shows the Prophet the ultimate disrespect --- and as punishment, she loses her hands. After a twist of events, the Prophet ends up dead and the cult’s camp is burned to the ground. Now Minnow is in a juvenile detention center for beating a boy almost to death. She struggles to adapt to modern times and life in the detention center. Fortunately, she has the help of her roommate, Angel. Fiercely independent, wickedly smart and surprisingly deadly, Angel teaches Minnow about everything she missed out on in while she was in the cult. Angel also serves as Minnow’s protector and friend during her time in the juvenile detention center. However, Angel cannot protect Minnow from everything, including remembering all that happened to her and her family in the cult. These flashbacks only grow worse and more painful when an FBI detective visits her as he attempts to find out what really happened the night the Prophet died and the Kevinian camp went up in flames. The detective promises to make a deal with her if she tells him the truth, but this means confronting painful truths about herself and her past. But, if she can face it, the truth could mean setting Minnow free forever.Beautifully written and filled with emotion, THE SACRED LIES OF MINNOW BLY is an unforgettable tale of grief, loss and hope. This is author Stephanie Oakes’s debut novel, and she did a fantastic job in all aspects of the book. The writing is wonderfully done; the language is poetic and insightful and Oakes’s voice shines through the entire novel. One of the best parts of the novel, though, is the plot. Twists and turns fill the story; readers will definitely be sitting on the edge of their seats until the last page.Because the novel is told partially with flashbacks, it allows the story to be told both in the cult’s camp and in the detention center. The all-girls juvenile detention center provides an interesting and effective background for Minnow’s story; it allows Oakes to explore not only Minnow’s character and strength, but also a wide range of other female characters and the unique ways they handle the struggles in their own lives. It is their stories, along with Minnow’s, that will have readers captivated.Oakes also did a great job creating effective, complex characters. The cruelty of the Prophet and those in the Kevinian cult will have readers astonished, while Minnow’s strength through everything will inspire. Minnow makes a strong protagonist, and her quest for the truth is noble and worth cheering on. Throughout the novel, readers can see Minnow develop into a complex, interesting character. While she has a sweet and caring nature, she can also be fierce and just as dangerous as her new roommate, Angel. An interesting character herself, Angel is not only independent, but she is also extremely smart and caring --- she is even willing to put herself in danger for Minnow’s sake. Her heartbreaking background was only mentioned a couple of times in the novel, and while I wish Oakes had divulged more of Angel’s history, I think she would make a great protagonist herself if Oakes decides to continue writing about the world of THE SACRED LIES OF MINNOW BLY. Another character that I would love to have learned more about is Jude, although readers do get to learn a bit about him and his family through Minnow’s flashbacks. With the book’s rather open ending, though, readers don’t know for sure what happens to him or the rest of the characters. Hopefully this means a sequel is in sight because readers will definitely be wanting to see more from Oakes very soon.Reviewed by Cheyenne C.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. 4.5 stars By K. Branfield The Sacred Lies of Minnow Bly by Stephanie Oakes is a unflinchingly honest portrayal of life inside a religious cult. Although a work of fiction, every heartbreaking detail rings true and the novel raises very thought-provoking questions and answers about blindly following the teachings of a self-proclaimed spiritual leader. When Minnow Bly was five years old, her parents followed Prophet Kevin into the Montana wilderness where they helped build and then lived in a secluded Community with other followers. They never questioned the Prophet’s increasingly bizarre teachings and they followed his every command without any protest. The Kevinian cult believed in taking more than one wife and the Prophet decided which young girl the much older men would marry. The women and children carried out the most strenuous tasks while the men were made Deacons of the “church”. The cult members had no contact with the outside world but Minnow faintly recalled small details of life before her family joined the Prophet which caused her to doubt some of his proclamations. When the novel opens, Minnow has been arrested for a vicious assault on a young man following her escape from the wilderness compound. She is convicted of the crime and sent to a juvenile detention center where an FBI forensic psychologist offers her a deal that could lead to her parole on her eighteenth birthday. In exchange for his testimony at her upcoming parole hearing, Minnow must tell Dr. White the harrowing details about the night the Prophet died and the Kevinian compound was set ablaze. Through flashbacks and her vivid account to Dr. White, the story of Minnow’s life with the Prophet is revealed and surprisingly, with the help of the doctor and her cellmate, Angel, Minnow begins to heal from her horrific ordeal. While not technically a mystery, there is a suspense element to the storyline. Minnow is reluctant to divulge the events of the night of the Prophet’s death but why? What reason could she possibly have for keeping a secret of this magnitude? Is she responsible for his death? If not, who is trying to protect? The answers to these questions might just lie in her surprising and unexpected friendship with Jude, an outsider who lives close to the religious compound. This friendship leads Minnow to sneak away at every opportunity to escape her cloistered life with the Kevinians. These experiences with Jude also foster some of her skepticism of Prophet Kevin’s somewhat ludicrous teachings. At the juvenile detention center, Minnow strikes up an unlikely friendship with Angel who helps her navigate the confusing life among the other inmates. After years in seclusion, Minnow is incredibly naive and at first, she finds it difficult to leave behind the teachings of Prophet Kevin. She is also uncertain of her own opinions and looks to others to tell her what to think about the questions she has about life, faith and the world in general. Minnow is extremely intelligent and through the programs available to her, she begins the arduous tasks of learning to read and gain the skills needed to live a regular life. Surprisingly, Minnow does not turn her back on faith and she finds comfort in certain passages from the Bible. The Sacred Lies of Minnow Bly is an extraordinarily fascinating novel and the storyline is incredibly compelling. Minnow is an extremely complex and sympathetic character and she is also very easy to like despite the circumstances that led to her incarceration. Cults are infinitely intriguing and Stephanie Oakes provides a credible scenario for how disenfranchised and dissatisfied people can easily be led astray as they search for a better life for themselves and their loved ones. An absolutely outstanding novel that is quite hopeful despite the rather serious subject matter and one that I highly recommend.I received a complimentary copy for review.

I was immediately drawn into the story from the very first sentence! A girl who has no hands - extremely sad. A girl whose hands were cut off purposely by someone else - horribly tragic and frustrating. Minnow's hands were taken from her just because she didn't want to marry someone who already had eight wives. When Minnow was five, her family joined a religious cult lead by a prophet named Kevin. Therefore, they were known as Kevinians. This compelling story has so many different facets, so once I started reading it, I had a hard time putting it down. The cult life, Minnow's anger and confusion, the sadistic prophet, Jude and his struggles, Minnow's escape and first confrontation with a city dweller, and the forensic psychologist Dr. Wilson and his affect on Minnow. This book is inspiring with the message that it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks or believes, it only matters what you think!:)
