24 of 26 people found the following review helpful. a ninety year-old book that could be written yesterday By A Customer The Cruise of the Snark relays the saga of Jack London's construction, and two-year voyage in a 45-foot sailing ketch from San Francisco to Hawaii, the Marquesas, Tahiti, and the head-hunting Solomon islands. His difficulties in getting the boat built after the 1906 San Fran earthquake are hilarious as he describes the assaults of his contractors and creditors during the construction. After they finally launch the voyage six months late, they manage to find Hawaii through sheer luck, where Jack and his plucky wife, Charmain, learn to surf (remember this is 1907!), visit the leper colony at Molokai and the "House of the Sun" volcanic crater on Maui. Then comes the "impossible traverse" to the Marquesas, which they didn't realize couldn't be done until a week after they'd begun. Continuing on to Tahiti and the savage Solomon islands, Jack and his determined "Snarkites" encounter natives, tribal chieftains, missionaries, and overcome their problems with incredible persistence and naivete as only some of the first white people to enter these areas could possess. Incidentally, the "cook" on this voyage was the famous photographer and world explorer Martin Johnson who was picked to go on his very first adventure by a letter to Jack advertising his thirst for travel. With his wife Osa, he would years later revisit the Solomons for the purpose of photographing cannibalism before embarking on their epic photographic safaris in Africa and Borneo. Jack only mentions Martin in passing during "the Cruise", perhaps sensing some literary and photographic competition that he would encounter later. This book is a great shelf companion to Martin's "Through the South Seas with Jack London", upon which he began his great series of travel books. "The Cruise" gives Jack's viewpoint as the sponsor of the trip, and an established literary giant. Whereas Martin's opinions on the racial makeup of the islanders are quite bigoted and reflect the prevailing views of the turn of the century, Jack is more open-minded, and willing to point out the failings of the white race in adapting to these island paradises. "The Cruise" is a great non-fiction book, among few others by London such as "the Abyss" that tell of his adventures and opinions first-hand as they happen. It truly captures his sarcastic yet hopeful perspective of himself and the whole concept of adventure.

Not something usually associated with Jack London, but true.For those with an ounce of humanity, his writing about the leper colony will both chill and warm your heart.For those who have ever thought about celestial navigation, more laughing out loud. Ten times better than William F(ing) Buckley's sidebar in Airborne (admittedly a wonderful book, and free of WFB's usual nonsense-on-stilts Latin-cognate pretensions).Finally, a love story. A man and his boat. A man and his wife. What a boat (in spite of itself), and what a wife.

London makes you feel like you are on the boat with him as he takes you from the docks of San Fransisco, to the Hawaiin Isles, to Tahiti and beyond. With tremendous humility and wit London portrays his journey through the South Seas brilliantly, ultimately concluding that attempting to live out a dream can become a nightmarish reality.

To all those who despair about the possibility of good government: Read this book about a mayor who made appointments based on competence not loyalty and then gave them support for innovation. Read about a mayor who gave all constituencies a voice. Business leaders who feared Tomilea Allison’s election came to see that her revitalization of downtown served their interests as well. Those living below the poverty line found their lives considered and improved. For the citizens, the formerly deserted down town became an arena for vibrant events. For those who loved nature, parks were revived and trees were planted. Though the book does not brag, the pages make clear that this was a mayor who knew how to structure a decision-making process that led to action. The voters of Bloomington, Indiana kept her in office for 13 years. The Accidental Mayor would be a wonderful text for college courses on government or public policy, but it is so well-written that anyone can enjoy this personal story told by a leader whose integrity and accomplishments are inspiring.

Smith As one of the three male cousins Tomi mentions on page 2, I'm the one who has the distinction of having two female cousins name Tomilea; one on the Croatian side go my genealogy and another on the Smith side. The Madera, California that Tomi describes in this book is now a thing of the distant past. I am the youngest of the cousins and I just clocked my eightieth year, but in a short few pages at the start of the book, Tomi captures the changing character of a small, rural, San Joaquin Valley town as it moved from the depression to the Second World War and on into the incredible world we know today. Tomi's political story is fascinating, offering an insider's view of an aspect of government that is seldom seen or written about--city government during a post World War Two period of extreme social change. An entertaining and readable narrative of accomplishment and personal achievement.

Mayor Transforms Dying Downtown By barbara carlson This engaging account of a mayor who transformed a small university city with a dying downtown into a flourishing city with a vibrant community life is a splendid textbook for anyone aspiring to public office. It is a testimony to the power of inspired leadership, determination, and hard work, along with humanity, wit, creativity and love, to affect the quality of city government, and the lives of its citizens. Mayor Allison served as consultant by request to several U.S. cities and received Special Recognition from the U. S. Conference of Mayors (1993).

Her own background follows in a similar path to that of Eva Meyer whose personal friendship she treasured for nearly fifty years. Hey This delightful book documents the history of my gym friend Eva - who was still going to the gym in her 90s. She was feisty and fun and the book reflects this lindy hop dancer. It starts by explaining Jewish migration in Eastern Europe and has a good map of the Pale.There are some family photos, as well as historical documents showing Eva dancing. Eva was an activist and its easy to see why when you understand her background that discusses unions and labor. The book ends when Eva met artist Joe Zirker - her long time 2nd husband. I will await Volume 2 about the next 50 years of her life!

The story was well written and I love the dynamics and interaction between the characters, I would definitely recommend this book and series!Leo Chatfield and Blair Bowman are two of Ashton Heights Firefighter and they are also best friends. They share everything including their woman, but things are starting to change.Watching his fellow firefighters find happiness Leo is starting to want more than one night stands he just has to find a way to break it to Blair. Blair doesn’t do commitment as far as he is concerned there is no such thing as happy ever after. But sometimes it only takes a night to change an opinion forever.Leo and Blair meet Ally at the local bar and there is instantly something about her that draws in both men and her attraction to them is equally as strong. But Ally has a secret and doesn’t tell Leo or Blair before she agrees to explore their attraction. After a night they will never forget will they all be able to walk away and what will happen when they find out what Ally has been hiding.

The local fire station once again provides two strong male characters. They are no longer enjoying one night stands and starting to question what type of relationship they want. Ally, the prodigal daughter/sister returns to Australia and is determined to remain true to herself and be her own person - not who her family want her to be.Add some steamy scenes in the playground and bedroom and you have a tantalising read.As always I am left wanting more from Sami Lee and recommend if you enjoy this story then download the others in the series.

Too Derivative By electricteacher This book is a compendium of ideas that the author has gleaned from other sources, most notably Robert Marzano, Fisher and Frey, Brookhart and others. The attempt to dress it up with "real life" experiences does nothing to advance the quality of the scholarship. There are many better choices to consider in this field of study

By annmric This is Book 2 in the Borden series and the final book. The story is told from Emma and Marcus's POV.The story begins where the first one left off with Marcus feeling confident that he can protect Emma. At 2am Marcus received a threatening text stating that Mr. Borden is being watched. Someone is aware of his relationship with Emma. Meaning Emma is in danger the same way Kate was. Marcus thought he was a step ahead when he is actually a step behind.In book 1 we were introduced to Kate. Kate is who Borden was secretly dating. Brothers decided to torture, rape, and kill Kate to send a message to Borden on how he conducts business.Borden runs the streets of New Raven. People fear him and take orders from him.Marcus has his men protecting Emma. Graeme, Hawke, and himself are always close to Emma. His men alone cannot provide the type of protection he needs so Borden seeks help from an unexpected person.For most of the story Borden has Emma on lockdown with his men looking for the person who sent that threatening text message. When the person is finally revealed is when the story becomes intense. The atmosphere changes from worried to scared.Don't fret over trying to figure out who sent that threatening text message to Borden you will waste brain cells trying to figure it out. Instead enjoy the journey and enjoy the carefully crafted words that AJ Lewis has transpired.The story was erotic with plenty of sex. The story was entertaining and suspenseful like a typical biker story. Filled with beatings, torture, and killing.The story was easy to follow and I was engaged. It's a story you find yourself lost in the pages.

By Bing The story started where book one left off.Someone was threatening an important person in Borden's life. He had a lot of enemies wanting to see the seemingly invincible Marcus Borden fall on his knees. What they see was the controlling, dangerous and powerful man whose background was as mysterious as the man himself. What they wanted was to eliminate and render him useless using any means available.What his enemies didn't see was how far he had come, what he went through and what he lost in the process. They didn't see that he went through hell and turned his soul inside and out just to be where he was, and he wouldn't go down without a fight.What about the girl that changed everything for him?He knew he was putting her life at risk, and a good man would walk away to save her from the danger that surrounded him. A good man would give her a chance to lead a normal life without his darkness. But Borden wasn't a good man. In fact, he can be really bad, ruthless and unforgiving to those who threatened the people he cared about. Being with him was dangerous, but he would go to the ends of the earth to make sure nothing will happen to her.They had a connection that was always intense. They made each other feel alive yet at the same time rendered each other paralyzed with fear.. fear of losing each other, of putting their guards down long enough for their enemies to strike. But their love gave them the strength to fight with everything they got. Yes, lust played a big role in their relationship too. Their life together was a mixture of normalcy and craziness. But they embraced the negatives and the troubles, relinquished independence and risked showing vulnerabilities if it meant keeping each other.If there was one woman who perfectly fit Borden, it would definitely be her. Like him, she was also unpredictable and had a rough edge, dark humor, and too well aware of the evil in the world. He needed an unconventional woman to accept the life he led and the man he was. He needed a strong woman to face the challenges of being with a man like him. Most of all, he needed a caring woman to bring out the soft, needy side of a badass like Borden.I enjoyed the journey of Marcus Borden and the story kept me on the edge of my seat. It was a story of love, friendship, choices and they were delivered with suspense, grit and a lot of heart.

Well of course I love Borden. Emma accepts Borden for who he is. She doesn't want to change him.I think a lot of books out there write about a heroine is trying to change a man. As a reader we fall love with the dark parts of the Hero, anti-hero and well the heroine should too.We learn a lot more about Borden in this book, we see just how lonely it is at the top... We also see how BADASS Borden is.I cried, I laughed, and I lusted.. duh...Great book with some great steam.

It's not often that I start a book and stick to it, all the way to the end, without wandering off to visit other books. This book was a big exception; I was IN from page one, and found that I thought about it even when I wasn't reading it, carrying its concepts and quotes around in my head, borrowed quotes as well as the author's own. I marked up my copy of the book with asterisks and underlines, and tiny smiley faces in the margin, knowing I'd want to go back again for guidance and inspiration.Evans invites us into the most intimate layers of her life, reminding us of our own versions of loss, bliss, or moments of aha. And yet, we get a chance to gain a deeper understanding through the author's first hand accounts of unique experiences we might never know for ourselves.The author's chosen quotes are profound and spot on, and I get a kick out of how they range from Pema Chödrön to Ray Charles, Walt Whitman to the Eagles. Her own words are quotable too. I kept wondering how I might describe the way she so beautifully braids threads of past-present-past, but then, whether she meant to or not, she ultimately described it FOR me: "As though time isn't linear but is a folded-over piece of paper where events touch, where thought and outcome occur not in sequence but in a flash."I was sad when I finished reading it, the way you might be sad at the end of a soul-to-soul conversation with a kindred spirit. Sad but rejuvenated, grateful, and so much better for having experienced it.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A limitless life By Karen Craigo This is, quite simply, a remarkable memoir. The author covers a lot of ground -- emotional and physical -- in these pages. She provides an honest account of relationships, good and bad, and of her health journey, and, most importantly to me, her courageous professional journey, throwing over a perfectly good academic job for a less secure post in another field, and then, ultimately, for life on the road. This sort of feels like a summer read to me -- so full of possibility, illustrating the kind of limitless life we all thought we would end up with (though few do). I've read Kate Evans. Now I kind of want to be her, or at least to channel some of her expansive and generous spirit.
