By TLJ Larry Dandridge has captured on these pages the lives of US Army Huey helicopter crews in the Mekong Delta of South Viet Nam. He paints with gripping detail of what life was like for member of the 121st Soc Trang Tigers and Vikings as they performed day in and day out during the years of 1968 and 1969. Having been there with Larry, I can vouch for it accuracy and the difficulty faced supporting the Viet-Namese and US troops in finding, fixing the locations of a very elusive and resilient enemy. These young flight crews were lead by 21 and 22 year old pilot and even younger flight crews in combat assaults, raids and attacks in the most difficult terrain such as: 7 Sisters Mountains which contained the difficult high rock fortress Nui Coto, the huge vast swamp of the U Minh forest which hid POW Army Major Nick Rowe for 5 years before his escape in 1968, the vast Plain of Reeds and other the triple canopy jungles along the lower Mekong and Bassac Rivers.Regardless if you were there or not, Larry Dandridge's work takes you there front and center. His work is the real deal and factual. The insertions and extractions when the lead was flying and the pucker factor was maxed at a "10" are difficult for anyone to transcribe. I hope Larry someday writes this a fictional story because I think he would get wider readership.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Update of Charge of the Light Brigade By Thomas J Brown W. Larry Dandridge book is indeed a ‘soldiers story’. For any reader of military history and for all armchair generals, it belongs on the same book shelf as “The Red Badge of Courage, “All Quiet on the Western Front” “God is My Co-Pilot” and “The Forgotten Soldier”. It is now on mine. Beside the body of the book itself, of equal value were his Appendices, especially Appendix C “Lessons Learned”.Warrant Officer Dandridge’s writing takes us to the dawn of Army tactical helicopter operations in Vietnam. The student of war learns of ‘Slicks’ ‘Dust Offs’, ‘Snakes’ .‘S*** Hooks’ ,’Loach’, ‘Hogs’ and ‘Frogs’. These are the brief one-word definitions used by soldiers to describe their war horses that took them into battle. Warrant Officer Dandridge puts man and machine into the tactical and operational context of ground combat with simple straight forwardly written vignettes about he and his fellow pilots’ experiences in I Corp. Not all horses came back but some riders survived. Not all pilots came back but some helicopters survived and on occasions, neither returned to base. Despite the grim statistical losses, and Warrant Officer Dandridge’s descriptions of gun battles between helicopters in ground hover with VC and NVA soldiers feet from them firing small arms, grenades and rockets, II was in wonder how many men and machines did survived, including Warrant Officer Dandridge.I checked with an old friend who was an Army Medic in II Corp. He not only confirmed much of Warrant Officer Dandridge’s stories but retold of one where he saw dozens of Army attack helicopters lined up on an airfield in echelon in ground hover in support of what turned out to be a twelve hour battle grinding battle just miles from his base. As one helicopter took off to support ground troops in close contact, one was returning low on fuel and with no ammunition. It refueled, rearmed and the crew grabbed a bite to eat then took its place in line. From mid-afternoon till three in the morning, a non-stop chain saw of death and destruction took off from his airfield! No wonder, as Warrant Officer Dandridge noted, the enemy most feared the Army Tigers, Vikings and Vipers. As I closed the book, I could not help hear the echo’s of history’s other previous cavalry stories starting with John Ford’s “She Wore a Yellow Ribbon”, the tune of “Garryowen” playing and ending with Tennyson’s “Charge of the Light Brigade”.Thanks Warrant Office Dandridge and to all your fellow pilots who served so well and honorably in a war whose lessons learned are starting to fade from memory. Your book is an important contribution to both the Army’s corpus of knowledge and an inspiration to generations who have yet to experience the smell of cordite in the morning and the black out from the fatigue of grinding combat in the evening. Well done!

BLADES OF THUNDER is a SPECTACULAR 5 STAR MUST READ.Blades of Thunder is a gripping, fact filled, exciting and "cannot put the book down" read! The author of Blades of Thunder, LTC (retired) W. Larry Dandridge pulls the reader into the action of Vietnam during some of the war’s worst years of 1968-69. The reader can almost hear the explosive sounds of the helicopter blades as they slice through the air and feel the sweat of our young warriors as they fly their missions. This book is an eye opener of what our young men had to endure, and many times fly their helicopter with only a prayer. The bravery and courage of our young warriors in this fact filled book is the backbone of the book, and author Larry Dandridge is the heart of the book.Blades of Thunder is a very personal book for me. The book has been dedicated to my brother, Warrant Officer Gerald (Jerry) David Markland. Almost forty eight years ago, when my family received the shattering news of Jerry's death, I have been searching for more information about Jerry's military life and death. All of these years, Dandridge had also been searching for Jerry's family. My prayers, have been answered with Larry finding me and this wonderful book. Peace at last! The reader will follow Dandridge and his "Band of Brothers”, helicopter pilots, crew chiefs and door gunners. The actual stories are hair raising and intense, but the reader will learn of their sacrifices, courage, and bonds with each other. The around the clock service they gave to our United States of America, at all costs is awe inspiring! Yet, the ones that did come home were oftentimes met with an unwelcoming return.BRAVO to Larry Dandridge, and all of our Veterans and “All” Soldiers on active duty! Remember Peace is not free! BLADES OF THUNDER IS AMAZING!!!! BUY IT NOW and all 2015 profits support Fisher House of Charleston, SC that will serve the families of Veterans undergoing treatment.Jackie Markland Grossetete

Philippine Rain is the true story of an American girl living with her Air Force family in the Philippines at the height of the Vietnam War. Both a coming-of-age love story and a portrait of the Sixties, the author's teen voice raises questions about the conduct of American foreign policy still relevant today.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The story brings the 1960s back By Robert H. Wright, Jr. I found Philippine Rain to be an excellent presentation of two of the struggles of the human animal throughout history. First, the struggle of a sixteen year old daughter (the author) coming of age and exerting her flowering personality as she is confronted with first-love, disapproval by her father, and a bewildering war in the background; and, second, the continuing struggle of the human race in the killing of his own kind. The author’s relationship with, and her depiction of, her parents is well done. She makes the closing years of the 1960s come alive: Walter Cronkite, Bobby Kennedy, the anti-war demonstrators, the music, the fashions, the permissiveness, the very ethos of that tragic era. This book is particularly recommended to those who, like the author, became aware the Vietnam War was wrong while their father doggedly insisted it was right. The author of Philippine Rain is this reviewers niece but my attitude toward the book is, of course, unbiased.

By Amazon Customer Once given the opportunity to read this book, after prying it from my mother's hands upon her completion of reading it, I couldn't put it down. The plethora of emotions ran the gamut. Without producing a spoiler I personally related to the parenting modus operandi characteristics of her mother and father with an equal amount of relevance towards my love for the United States Air Force way of life. I truly felt as if I could have been Deborah's neighbor through the entire book, cover to cover. What a memorable trip into the past. A MUST READ!!!

Great Book (Bad Edition) By A Customer Needless to say, Boswell's LIFE OF JOHNSON is one of the preeminent works of biography and should be read by anyone interested in Johnson or the genre. It is a great book (also great is W. Jackson Bate's SAMUEL JOHNSON [1st published 1975]which is a MUST for anyone interested in Johnson). But although I love the Everyman's Library, I do not recommend this edition of Boswell. Unlike the usual quality of the Everyman's Library, its Boswell is rife with typographical errors (there's even missing text!). Though it's the only edition of Boswell I've read, I regret that a correct edition is not on my bookshelf. That being said, if this is the only affordable hardcover version you can find -- and you buy only hardcovers -- go ahead and purchase the Everyman's despite the numerous and distracting errors.

41 of 44 people found the following review helpful. nice but heavily abridged By Amazon Customer I liked this but prefer the unabridged edition published by Oxford University Press (in their Oxford World's Classics series). If you're willing to read Boswell, spend a few dollars more for the OUP edition.

A Great Book, Funny and Profound By Wanderer Note: I made some immature Mormon angry because of my negative reviews of books that attempted to prove the Book of Mormon, and that person has been slamming my reviews almost as fast as they are posted.I must have really burned him or her because I've deleted this review and re-posted it and within an hour, I had a "not helpful" vote. Give me a break. That person's faith must be very fragile, indeed. Oh, well.I'm trying to be "helpful," and you can see that it took some work to put this review together. So, your "helpful" votes are appreciated. Thanks, and I hope you find some enjoyable quotations (below) from Boswell's wonderful book, but first a little history.Samuel Johnson, the irascible but generous lexicographer of the eighteenth century, is mostly remembered because of Boswell, and Boswell is remembered because he wrote Johnson's biography. At the time, Johnson was already famous for his "Dictionary of the English Language," an impressive work for the year 1755. Among many other writings, Johnson put out an edition of Shakespeare's works (1765), with valuable notes that are still referred to today.Johnson published a "series of grave and moral discourses" in the periodical called the Rambler, but when it was translated into Italian, it came out as the ludicrous "El Vagabondo," something far from Johnson's pious intentions. And of good intentions, it was Johnson who said, "Sir, Hell is paved with good intentions.""(Johnson's) defense of tea against Mr. Jonas Hanway's violent attack upon that elegant and popular beverage, shows how very well a man of genius can write upon the slightest subject, when he writes, as the Italians say, con amore."Johnson despised Americans and was prejudiced against Scotland. He said, "Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel."Johnson was a male chauvinist. Yet, he was "a king of men." He was a "robust genius, born to grapple with whole libraries," and although "indolence and procrastination were inherent in his constitution, whenever he made an exertion he did more than any one else."As a person who is afraid of death in the normal sense, I was surprised that in spite of being very religious, Johnson had an extreme fear of death. "'The better a man is, the more afraid he is of death, having a clearer view of infinite purity.' Said Boswell, "Johnson owned, that our being in an unhappy uncertainty as to our salvation, was mysterious; and said, 'Ah! We must wait till we are in another state of being, to have many things explained to us.' Even the powerful mind of Johnson seemed foiled by futurity."Boswell's commentary brings to mind a story told by St. Augustine in his monumental City of God. A philosopher was abroad a ship captained by a bad man, and after a violent storm, the fearless captain jeered the philosopher for his terror. Said the philosopher, quoting from a similar incident that occurred to the pagan Aristippus, 'A rogue need not worry about losing his worthless life, but Aristippus has a duty to care for a life like his.""Johnson knew more books than any man alive. He had a peculiar facility in seizing at once what was valuable in any book, without submitting to the labour of perusing it from beginning to end." But he also held that it was important to "read diligently the great book of mankind.""Why, Sir, I am a man of the world. I live in the world, and I take, in some degree, the color of the world as it moves along."Johnson was also the one who said, "When a man knows he is to be hanged in a fortnight, it concentrates his mind wonderfully.""I love Blair's Sermons," Johnson said. "Though the dog is a Scotchman, and a Presbyterian, and every thing that he should not be, I was the first to praise them. Such was my candor," he said with a smile."

Great characters that are easy to relate to By Kitty Smith Elise Shay is one of those characters that I couldn't help but feel an instant connection with. Not because she's a model because no one will ever mistake me for one of those mythical beasts, but because she comes across as this totally real person who is struggling to make it on her own. In Elise's case, she's trying to break into one of the toughest businesses there is, and do it in New York City. She starts off insecure and unsure but as she gets into these photo shoots you can see her really begin to come into her own and find this self confidence and inner strength she didn't know she had. The pride she feels in finally being able to pay Megan her rent, something simple like that, well it just made me love her.The writing is great and the character development is nicely done. One thing I liked about Elise was she puts off this sort of sexual energy that just draws the men in, and the chemistry is pretty smoking. Big wig Michael or bad boy Donovan, either way she can't lose if you ask me! Love the story, love the character, and I'm looking forward to reading all of the series to find out what happens with Elise, her career, and her potential suitors!

Maybe I should move to New York City… I could really picture myself as Elise when I was reading the story. I could feel how uncomfortable she was during her first photo shoot but her inhibitions went away as she became more confident and sure of herself. The level of heat was perfect for me, as I don’t like graphic sex. Keep writing more books Sienna!

Just the right length that I could get through one during my lunch break at work. It was fun following the main character Elise and seeing her emotions getting pulled this way and that as she tried to decide what and more importantly who she wanted in her life. I hope the author writes more stories about Elise's friends!

Freedom Disrupted is the story of a typical boy crazy teenager, Lillian Goynes, whose father's connections at a U. S. Navy base in the Philippine Islands during the 1920s and 30s offered her a near-blissful life until the Japanese invasion transformed her world. One day after Pearl Harbor, her existence exploded into bloody destruction. After narrowly escaping death, she and her family witnessed enemy invasion as the Imperial Japanese Army marched into Manila. Then, Japanese soldiers ordered them to gather food and clothing for three days before herding them, along with 3000 other civilians, into a makeshift concentration camp, the University of Santo Tomás. For over three years, these captives had to confront challenges of incarceration-loss of freedom, constant fear of death, deprivation and starvation. Using ingenuity, indomitable spirit and trust in God, many survived until the heroic United States First Calvary rescued them. Ironically, danger persisted, for once the Japanese had abandoned the camp, they bombarded it. Robbed of her coming of age years, Lillian made the most of her newly acquired freedom when she arrived in the vibrant, free-spirited city of San Francisco. After recuperating, she and her family traveled to Texas, where her dreams became reality.

I learned so much about their time in the prison camp, and of course about your mother, my aunt. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Hello. My name is Paul DeLisle. I’m the guy who wrote this book. You've probably never heard of me. That's okay. Most people wouldn't know me from Adam. But, unless you've been living in a cloistered monastery for the last fifteen years, you have heard of my band. So begins the memoir of the creation, rise, and current state of the multi-platinum recording artist Smash Mouth as told by bassist Paul DeLisle. Well known for their hits “All Star,” “Walking on the Sun,” “Then the Morning Comes,” “Can’t Get Enough of You Baby,” and “I’m a Believer,” the band carried the spirit of a generation, but didn't stop there. Enjoy this behind-the-scenes look from Paul’s unique, there from the start, insider’s view.

I couldn't yet go to their club/bar shows cuz I wasn't yet 21 and I didn't have a car to get to them. Shortly after I turned 21, my first show was at 1996's Kamp Kome, where the guys played the side stage. I stood right in front of Paul during the performance and watched in awe as I fell in love with this band! I was hooked. I went to as many of the local club shows as I could. I saw them about once a week that first year. At first I was too nervous to introduce myself, but it was hard not to notice me when at a few of the shows there was only like 15 people and 14 were friends/family. I was mainly just a fly on the wall that first year. Hanging back and watching. I couldn't fathom the fame that was about to hit the band. Here I am 19 years later and I am still their #1 fan and they know it! I love all the guys and would do almost anything for them (including finish eating Steve's flaming hot scrambled eggs that Guy Fieri cooked up)!
