By Anara Guard I made the mistake of opening Stephanie Sorensen’s book Ma Doula at nine o’clock in the evening. After midnight, I forced myself to set it aside unfinished! But even in my dreams, it seemed as if I heard the calm tones of her practical and wise voice. I recommend this book highly for anyone considering having a doula at their births, for those who have given birth and those about to. If you enjoy “Call The Midwife,” you will love Ma Doula.As Stephanie says on her blog, her book is not about herself, it is about the courageous women and men from across the globe who come here with hope, who dare to fall in love, make babies, and dream of providing a better life for their families. Ma Doula tells stories of births among women from many cultures and situations. In the telling, we learn of their strength and courage, their fear and pain, and how they persevere through situations that call upon them to be more present and open than they may have thought possible. Photographs show us the glowing results of some births: happy toddlers, peaceful infants.Stephanie has years of experience as a mother of five, midwife, lactation consultant, and now doula. As a doula, she is a birth coach, committed to being with the mother throughout her labor and delivery. Nursing shifts come and go but Stephanie stays, always presenting the parents with their options, encouraging them to make their own choices and supporting those decisions. She clearly favors less intervention but is never opposed to medical advances that can save lives or prevent harm.Our paths crossed when we both lived in St. Paul decades ago. Most Interesting: Doula’s Role in Baby’s “Birth Day” By ConnieA “It was the most amazing thing happening in the whole world at that very moment, and we were allowed to witness it.”The author wrote these prophetic words about the moment of birth. Her interesting stories are from her point of view as a doula, a trained person that a mother-to-be hires to advocate and support her during the pregnancy, and especially leading up to and the actual delivery.Stephanie has worked with many mothers who are new immigrants, which often means the woman has little-to-no English. Some of the families she has advocated for are local, some living in homeless shelters or low-income. Some are from S.E. Asia, Somalia, Ethiopia, and others are Hmong, Amish or Hispanic. Often a translator is needed to ensure that the family understands their options at time of delivery.Many of these women are from cultures where their body is covered—or she is extremely private. Once the translating service sent a man, causing the woman in labor much humiliation—even though Stephanie had him talk from behind a curtain.The role of a doula is to advise and support—but not give a firm opinion about what doctors, nurses or midwives might recommend. Once the mother and father make a decision, the doula is there to help make it happen, unless something serious causes the medical people to recommend another path to a safer birth.My favorite part was about often a first-time dad holding his newborns—and Stephanie asks him to take off his shirt so his and the baby’s skin is touching. This is called skin-to-skin bonding, which a mother does when she nurses.I am a big fan of “Call the Midwife” on public TV. The show takes place over several years following WWII, and now it is 1961. The ongoing and intimate care that the midwives give reminds me of the work of doulas and midwives in Stephanie’s book.

As part of the birthing team, she has a ringside seat and over thirty stories of how the families, midwife, doctors, and hospitals adapt birthing methods to fit the situation. Women considering delivery options would benefit from reading this book.
