12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Excellent business advice By Bruce Epstein I stayed at a Marriott in Denver last week and found a copy of this book in the nightstand. I expected it to be hogwash and instead found it to be the most useful business book I've ever read. It is a quick read (about 150 pages, not the 240 mentioned in the Amazon catalog). It is entertaining without being self-indulgent and informative without being preachy. The anecdotes revealed an appropriate level of introspection (my one quibble is that Mr. Marriott claims that his family and faith come before business and yet also describes himself as a workaholic). I'm not in the hospitality industry and yet I found dozens of parallels to my own business (computer software and book publishing). Most interesting were the frank assessments of Marriott's business mistakes. He truly used them as an opportunity to learn. The book is chock full of excellent and thought-provoking strategies and totally devoid of the cheesy buzzwords so prevalent in, say, the latest Tom Peters books. Although I have no association with Marriott, the book will cause me to examine the entire service industry in a new light.

Sound advice from an industry leader By Amazon Customer In The Spirit To Serve, Bill Marriott offers advice on how to develop the type of management basics and solid core values that made his company an industry leader. These ideas are neither new nor radical. They are the simple lessons that Mr. Marriott has learned during his lifetime tenure at Marriott.· Take a hands-on approach to your firm. Don't sit at your desk. Walk around your facility and interact with your employees. Make sure they know that you care about what they do.· Managing well depends on listening well. Cultivate patience and keep an open mind when listening to ideas from employees and customers.· Give your employees the tools they need to work. Make sure employees are properly trained for their jobs. After training, make sure there are support systems in place to assist employees.· Offer exceptional employee incentives. Marriott has offered employees a toll-free consultation service, profit-sharing programs, promotion from within and several recognition programs.· Encourage teamwork among workers. Create an environment in which the rewards of working together outweigh the rewards of individual interest.· Don't take your partners for granted.· Discover what works best and do it. Develop detailed standard operating procedures. The right way of doing things is worth making a habit.· Balance who you are with where you are going. Maintain order within your organization while embracing change.· Don't let growing pains destroy what you have built. Stay close to the daily grind of your business during periods of growth. Keep a close eye on quality control.· Don't waffle over decision making. Stand by the decisions you make.· Learn to recognize boom and bust signals. 7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. An Excellent Book About Business Principles By A Customer I really enjoyed this book. I was vacationing at a Marriott Hotel and actually bought this book I wanted to read it so much (even though I thought it should just be given away to the guests). It did not disappoint me. As one of the other reviewers noted, it was a well-written, easy read.Mr. Marriott inspired me with the business tips contained in the book. I especially enjoyed reading about the checklists that Marriott Hotels uses in its business. I really like checklists too. Why invent the wheel everytime you want to do something? Why try to remember all of the steps needed to complete a task, such as making up a room at a Marriott Hotel? Why not just find out what works and put it on paper?! In this way, a business can create a standardized process that can be taught to its employees, instead of relying upon each individual's whim. This idea is also discussed in Michael Gerber's excellent book, The E Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don't Work and What to Do About It.I also enjoyed reading J. W. Marriott, Jr's criticisms of his father's way of making decisions (I also thought it was interesting that he was so negative with regard to his father, in a published book). Jr. said that his father fretted too much about decisions and basically drove himself crazy. Jr. says in this book that one should not try to make a perfect business decision. That involves too much angst and is a waste of time. One should gather the necessary information to make an informed decision as best as one can, then actually make the decision. The price of pefection is prohibitive.I hope you find this book as enjoyable and as inspiring as I did.

About the Author

Prudence Farrow Bruns, PhD, is a member of one of Hollywood’s most celebrated families. The daughter of the late actress Maureen O’Sullivan and film director John Farrow, and the sister of actress Mia Farrow, Prudence is best known as the inspiration behind the Beatles’ beloved ballad, “Dear Prudence.” She is, however, an accomplished filmmaker and scholar in her own right.

Having first practiced meditation and yoga in 1966, she eventually founded Boston’s Integral Yoga Institute in 1967 and became a Transcendental Meditation® teacher in 1968. Farrow Bruns holds a PhD in South Asian Studies from the University of California, Berkeley, specializing in the Sanskrit language and literature. She has presented and published on topics including South Asia, world religions, and Ayurvedic medicine.

She also has her own connections to art and filmmaking, having worked with artists such as Woody Allen, Andy Kaufman, and Paula Vogel. She produced the film Widow’s Peak.

Farrow Bruns and her husband have three children and four grandchildren. They live in Seagrove Beach, Florida.

I was curious to learn what life was, growing up as children of celebrities during the golden Hollywood era. I could relate to her life in a boarding school. Who does not remember being a teenager during the turbulent 60's, constantly living in fear of a nuclear war while endlessly searching for happiness and the meaning of life?Prudence's journey leads her to the perfect master who guides her to find inner peace and happiness through an effortless technique,TM.Now I know who Prudence from the song "Dear Prudence" is and why John Lennon was inspired to write a song about her, This book with all its wisdom was worth my time. I will recommend it to my friends of all ages.

By Anthony Kainauskas A brutally honest memoir.Prudence's bravery in facing her demons and her subsequent salvation is a template for many lives coming of age in the 60's.The book may be viewed in 2 parts. The first a life spent surrounded by Hollywood and private schools and the 2nd the dark night of the soul and the healing salve of meditation.Yet the 2nd part is depended on the first, as dominoes fall and seemingly unrelated events in one's life lead the actor from darkness to light, darkness being the needed soil of the emerging new growth of the life force, once hidden.Prudence's story though on one level an individuals one own personal journey on a far greater level is universal, as we are all just actors on a stage of silence.

Carroll Although “Dear Prudence” invites the reader into the late sixties and the trip to India with the Maharishi, the inclusion of the Beatles is really a side bar, sweet, funny and real though they are.The main story describes her own truly heroic journey. Prudy’s traumatic teenage years punctuated with upheaval and trauma, left her sliding on the knife’s edge of drug use, flirting with mental illness, and therefore a life that almost wasn’t. It’s a beautiful and enticing read; I couldn’t stop. I would recommend “Prudence” s story to anyone struggling to free themselves from the vampiric grip of substance abuse, depression and fear.The India sojourn and the gift of transcendental meditation for Prudence and the Beatles, speaks to the essence of the late sixties’ “revolution”. Prudy reports that “John saw colors” and George “felt the enormous power of silence and a liquidity”, all of which contributed to their musicianship in new and expanded ways. Whereas Prudy found a beacon of hope in the “new wave” of meditation. She relates how she held on against terrific odds, bed ridden for weeks with depression, clashing with doctors, mother, and narrow minded priests. Her relationship and “teachings” from the Maharishi fascinated me, I felt privileged to go way into that very private space with her. Because she never let go of that inner sight, she became a light for thousands of others, teaching yoga and TM across the country. Heroic indeed.

A Romantic Story of Brave Newlyweds in War Torn Vietnam By William MacEwan Becton "Escape from Vietnam" is a beautiful, romantic short story, showing how a couple's love for one another maintains their confidence and sense of adventure, during the dangerous backdrop of the Vietnam War.The author does a fabulous job illustrating the excitement and passion this young Venezuelan couple had for not only each other, but also their new lives together, as the husband is a Pan Am executive, who is suddenly relocated to Saigon, in the late 1960s.Through a sequence of comedic experiences, the reader gets to find the humor in the unexpected circumstances of a tenacious young foreigner, Isabella, and her new husband, Joel. As if opening a time capsule, from a more glamorous time, one gets to share the excitement of Isabella's jaunts around the surrounding area, with shopping trips to the Orient, as well as her photo safaris to Africa.The concluding story of Sean and Candice's "Escape from Vietnam" is a fascinating and exhilarating end to this incredible time for a young family, during an extraordinary time. By A Book Vacation This final installment of the Werewolves of Shade completes the Beautiful Immortals Series One, but it's not technically the end of the story. It does answer many questions, but also leave readers with a jarring cliffhanger, one that they might have figured out through context clues given in parts 1-6 (I didn't, though), but I guarantee there are still questions. And since there's so much more of the story to tell, O'Rourke has thankfully begun work on the next series, Beautiful Immortals Series Two, which is aptly titled Vampires of Maze, again written in serial parts just like Werewolves of Shade. Part one is slated to release on September 8, 2015.And I can't wait!O'Rourke's Werewolves of Shade has been an amazing ride, and while I did figure out a few of the plot twists, O'Rourke kept them coming, and the revelation at the end nicely tied together a ton of my questions that arose in parts 4 and 5, but as I already said, there is so much more to tell; so much more I need to know.Overall, the characters in this series are very well written. While some are more of a static character, like Rush, Mila has definitely flourished. She's been at war within herself over the duration of the serial, and she's really matured and come into herself. She extremely real, as is Calix, and I'm excited to note that one of the characters from Part 1, Flint, makes another appearance in this portion, which ties together a few loose ties concerning romance while also throwing some wrenches into the entire story. Full of suspense, horror, mystery, and intrigue, this is a series that you simply must read; fall in love with Mila, Rush, Calix, and Flint. Come on, September 8! I need more!

By Caroline Picking up from where we left off in Werewolves of Shade (part 5), Mila is faced with walking straight into vampires that are now in Shade. With Calix, Rush, Rea and Trent by her side, Mila has to pluck up the courage and move swiftly in fighting off the vampires if she is to live and help protect her new friends. This is all quite a shock to Mila who was told that a witch had ended the war between the werewolves and vampires. Now, it appears that not everything was quite what she thought.There is also a slight niggle in Mila’s thoughts that she may not be being loyal to the right people. After managing to shoot at a vampire she begins to question who she should be helping. But Calix, Rush, Rea and Trent have never done anything to make her feel that she shouldn’t help them. After all, they gave her somewhere to live, a job and helped in protecting her and defending herself. Maybe staying in Maze would have been the safest option, but she was so desperate to find out what had happened to her parents, and was happy to prove her independence and being able to think for herself by going to Shade.In the heat of the action, shouts and gunfire, Mila is taken by a vampire and tied to a wooden, pole where she believes she will be burned alive. After banging her head, she drifts in and out of consciousness, and therefore, initially, not fully alert to the danger that she is in. The reader really feels fearful for Mila as a way out doesn’t seem possible.“Was I now going to be ripped to shreds…? Would Calix and the others later find me dead – with my throat torn out and drained of all my blood?”During her time tied up, we have a flashback of when Mila was back in Maze, when her uncle used to be away from home for a few days, and she would spend time as a young teenager with her boyfriend, Flint. These moments highlight the relationship she had with both Flint and her uncle, and how life has changed for her recently. She knows for sure that although she cared for Flint, he is not the one she is in love with. And, regarding her uncle, she cannot be certain why he didn’t tell the truth about the Beautiful Immortals. Did he know himself? Surely he must?The writing is absolutely flawless as the reader is gripped with every moment that passes. The action, adventure, mystery and some brutal moments make it a very striking read that you will not forget in a hurry. But, as well as that, the reader also experiences every emotion there is when reading any O’Rourke story. The thrills and fear kick in, not to mention the rage that overcomes Mila during the gunfight at the beginning. There is also a comment from Calix that made me laugh that I’ll leave you to find!This final instalment of the Beautiful Immortals series 1 holds many revelations as a great deal comes to light. Some I was half expecting but then others were a complete surprise, with a fantastic twist at the end. It is a brilliant end to the series as Tim O’Rourke loves to gobsmack his readers and leave them waiting for more…A copy of Werewolves of Shade (Part 6) (Beautiful Immortals series 1) was provided by the author in return for an honest and fair review.

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. A wonderfully moving book By Ronnizoom I follow Danny's blog and was interested in reading his book. I picked it up intending to read the first few pages and ended up reading almost half because I couldn't out it down. it really is a remarkable book, searingly honest and very frank about the reality of depression.Danny is a perfect insist who sets very high (impossible) goals for himself and then beats himself up when he is unable to achieve them, this leads to feelings of low self-worth and severe life threatening depression. Danny is aware that he has a privileged life, he has access to a good education and a loving family and he understands that some people may find it hard to believe he would have anything to be depressed about. What is so brave about Danny's account of his illness and recovery is that he has had the courage to discuss what many young men are going through but have no avenue to express. Suicide rates for young men are going through the roof, sure we have more stuff and more opportunity but that doesn't seem to make us happier.You will find yourself rooting for Danny, he is extremely likable and I really cared what happened to him. It's important to note that this memoir hasn't been written after 'everything worked out ok'. Danny has given up his chosen (or imposed) career path to dedicate his life to raising awareness about depression and fulfilling his dream of publishing his first novel. Based on the quality of writing in this book I too am looking forward to his novel being published. If you know a young man who is suffering from depression this really is a must read. There is hope here.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. It's amazing to me that so many people still don't "get" ... By Betsy It's amazing to me that so many people still don't "get" it about depression. There is still a stigma attached. Danny's story is living proof of that, but it goes a long way toward shining a light on the subject. The more people know about depression, the more they can recognize the symptoms in others, and help them get help. He writes with passion and a sense of urgency and it's easy to read. I would recommend it for anyone who wants to know what it's like to suffer this debilitating disease. Whether you are suffering from it yourself, or suspect you might be, or whether you are trying to understand what someone else is going through, this book offers rare insight.

By ms caroline fuggle Reading other sufferers stories bizarrely helps when you are struck down with depression. Being brave enough to put the lowest points of your personal suffering down on paper takes courage. The upside though is that this courage then can go on, as in Danny's case, to potentially save lives. Lives that might otherwise have been lost if stories of winning over depression like this were not there to reach out for when all you crave is HOPE. Thank you Danny :)
