How can teachers do this? Diane Hunt has provided a well-organized, proven set of procedures to ensure learning success for elementary through high school students who struggle to succeed. Based on the educational theories of Multiple Intelligences and Bloom’s Taxonomy, her work employs the validated test taking and immediate feedback strategies to ensure success with high level thinking activities and assessments. No watering down the curriculum. She employs Bloom’s critical thinking categories of analyze, evaluate, and create in every content area on every level. First, she shows how to assess the vocabulary critical to content area success and then how to assess students’ preferred “intelligence” or ways of learning. Given this information, she shows teachers how to create practice assignments and vary them according to the multiple intelligence results. No, it does not mean that a teacher must create seven variations on each assignment. It does mean to focus on one struggling student, design a way to express the target knowledge using his intelligence, create another option, and give all students in the class the choice. Her book is replete with examples and suggestions. As for grading, Hunt distinguishes practice assignments from assessments. Practice assignments are checked for completion while assessments are graded for accuracy. The assessments can be taken multiple times until the student succeeds. Hunt’s work is consistent with the current goal of having all students succeed.

By Lee Lambert I was looking for a way to help my middle school child with tips and ideas to help her. As a home school parent, it is very important to learn and understand how your child learns best. While the book is written for teachers with many students, this was a great tool for me as a home school mom. If I can tap into the way she learns, she will benefit more than being in any classroom. Plus, I can cater all of the subjects to fit her exact learning style. While this is written for teachers, I suggest home school parents pick this up and use the techniques taught in the book. This book is the exact reason why we home school, so we can cater to our child's learning style and help them achieve their ultimate potential.

Come fly with Captain Ray Lemmon, United Airlines (retired), as he shares the fascinating story of his life and career as an airline pilot and airplane hobbyist. Starting with his Depression-era childhood, Lemmon tells of growing up during World War Ii, serving in the Army during the Korean Conflict, and finally achieving his dream of becoming an airline pilot with Capital and United Airlines during the emergence of the Jet Age, the mid-century years of growth and turbulence for the airline industry. Lemmon also writes about owning, restoring and flying vintage airplanes and his adventures with collectible cars, vintage boats, trailers and motor homes. His wife Margaret, his partner in life and adventure, is a prominent part of the story. (She had a pilot's license, too.) You'll feel as if you're right beside him in the cockpit as he tells stories of cross-country flights in small planes and big ones-of the pranks airline pilots play-of a terror-filled near-disaster over the Pocono Mountains in Tannersville, Pa.-and, after Margaret's passing, of a series of surprising events that defy explanation but that lead to unexpected revelation and personal enlightenment. Not Flying Alone is the story of a life and an era, vividly and memorably told.

Unabashed and without spin of a remarkable life By Joseph May Amazingly, Lemmon has encapsulated both a full career as an airline pilot and a full life as a regular person in a succinct yet easy 497 pages. These pages are easily and comfortably read with Lemmon's almost log book entry writing style. His prose allows readers to follow smoothly and quickly his life's arc spanning decades of airline service as well as several decades of life's decisions we must all face. Not Flying Alone has two intertwining, occasionally intersecting story lines – a flying career, beginning with DC-3 airliners and ending with the Douglas DC-10, and a life lived well with defeats as well as victories. Not Flying Alone is well worth reading regarding the latter for those who have lived through life's events (both happy and sad) as well as for those who have not (Lemmon's experiences are those experienced by most so it is better to know what may be expected).Along the way of his flying career, Lemmon developed mechanical skills rebuilding private aircraft as well as vintage autos. He was also half of a mutually devoted pair with his wife. Moving, business, family lucky choices and bad ones – all are laid bare and unadorned in smiles and tears. The telling of his flying career is enlightening since he writes what few, if any, others do not – the remarkable as well as the nitty-gritty (after all few things are perfect). We learn that pilots in the DC-3 often used the side windows to access the windshield for cleaning while in-flight – and the cockpit reflected the outside environment (e.g., if it was wet they were wet). There are also his experiences with the DC-6, B720, B727, B737 and DC-10. His writing of the 727 is especially delightful as he describes the marvel of its wing and how the rear mounted engines necessitated non intuitive landing procedures. His description of living within the airline world is insightful as we learn of training variances, openings, moves and more. Lemmon tells of the advancement in flight simulation, as well, culminating in a confidence exercise which could only be done in a flight simulation (or wartime) – taking off, flying a circuit and landing done all with no instruments. That is experience and knowing the physics of the machine!Lemmon, given his several decades walking this planet, also explains his hard won philosophy and why it crystallized for him late in his life. All in all, this book is rewarding to the aviation enthusiast as well as those who know history occurs within the context of lives which are lived well. Not Flying Alone is a rewarding and comfortable weekend read – one which leaves readers informed as well as richer having read this true story so well told.As is the publishing custom authorHOUSE Selfpublishing provided a courtesy copy for an objective review.

By puzzler I found this a very compelling story of the personal and prodessional life of an airline captain's 30 year career. He lerned to fly at an earlly age and lived his professional career starting in the early 1960's, a time of great expansion in the industry.. His personal life takes us to an awakening of spirit shortly afte the loss of his wife.

Liz Jacoby is a petite, single, 48 year old woman, who was a photographer and longtime resident of Columbus, OH. It is July. She is in the hospital’s rehab center to overcome a hemorrhagic stroke. She has to use a wheelchair, but her recovery has been rather routine, as well as tedious. Nothing an active, talented photographer would want any time. Pete Young, a short, wiry, 45 year old man is the patient across the hall with an “accidental” gunshot wound and a mild concussion. In reality, he had been hired to kill a political city candidate and was shot by that target. This was his first messed up hit. A known thief, not a known hit man. Liz overhears the argument Pete and Luke, his boss, had about why he was shot. Liz is convinced Pete is a hitman. Pete is certain that she heard their argument, so he begins to weave his web-of-doubt to play-up her stroke’s mental deficiency to the hospital’s staff. The last thing on Liz’s mind is to deal with a hit man in the hospital. Her biggest question was who could she tell about Pete; who would believe her? However, along with her medical concerns, her current life gives her a new boyfriend, Scott Warner, a Physical Therapy Intern. He began late to begin his Physical Therapy career; a little younger than Liz, but not that much. She confides in Scott and knows he believes her because he tells his police detective friend of her dilemma with Pete. Liz is disabled, but she becomes a tenacious, gritty patient to deal with Pete’s mental torments. No matter, Liz is a survivor! With emotional twists, a murder and a bit of romance, The Spider Sat Beside Her is riveting!

She is a stroke survivor like B.D. Adams, the author. She is gutsy, but disabled and refuses to let her disabilities keep her down. A little like "Rear Window," the movie by Hitchcock, or the movie with Robert De Niro in "Flawless." I highly recommend this book for everyone who likes suspense, but maybe more for other stroke survivors and there family members to see what can be accomplished. B. D. obviously wanted to show other survivors that they can do more. What Liz, the heroine, does in chapter 32 was more than a surprise!

Best PDF Ebook John Quincy Adams: American Visionary, by Fred Kaplan

In this fresh and illuminating biography, Fred Kaplan brings into focus the dramatic life of John Quincy Adams—the little-known and much-misunderstood sixth president of the United States and the first son of John and Abigail Adams—and reveals how Adams' inspiring, progressive vision guided his life and helped shape the course of America.

Kaplan draws on a trove of unpublished archival material to trace Adams' evolution from his childhood during the Revolutionary War to his brilliant years as Secretary of State to his time in the White House and beyond. He examines Adams' myriad sides: the public and private man, the statesman and writer, the wise thinker and passionate advocate, the leading abolitionist and fervent federalist. In these ways, Adams was a predecessor of Lincoln and, later, FDR and Obama. This sweeping biography makes clear how Adams' forward-thinking values, his definition of leadership, and his vision for the nation's future is as much about twenty-first-century America as it is about Adams' own time.

Meticulously researched and masterfully written, John Quincy Adams paints a rich portrait of this brilliant leader and his vision for a young nation.

John Quincy Adams: American Visionary, by Fred Kaplan

From Booklist *Starred Review* A failed president is the popular conception of the sixth chief executive of the U.S., but Kaplan’s open mind as he diligently researched this much-maligned figure and conceived the biographical picture he would construct based on his wide reading and study results in a much broader understanding. With great felicity of style, Kaplan, who is not only an esteemed biographer (his Thomas Carlyle, written in 1993, was a finalist for two top prizes) but also a professor of English, pays respect to his academic background by following as a major thread in this monumental biography Adams’ giftedness as a writer, as his many public writings and copiously kept diary attest. An outstanding diplomat prior to his occupancy of the White House, Adams, son of the second president, stumbled badly in the highest office in the land. But Kaplan sees not an inadequate man in a position he could not manage. He sees instead a “visionary,” who stood for a united American republic free of the divisiveness of slavery. The lack of accomplishments during Adams’ one-term presidency was the result, as Kaplan depicts it, of his enemies’ concerted and united effort to thwart any of the programs he endeavored to achieve. --Brad Hooper

Review “Kaplan has produced a full-length narrative of this remarkable life, rendered in lucid and loving prose. . . . Kaplan rightly portrays Adams as a man ahead of his time. . . . A valuable book about an important American figure.” (Robert W. Merry, The New York Times Book Review)“An engaging, well-crafted, and deeply researched biography that puts particular emphasis on John Quincy’s rich life of the mind.” (Susan Dunn, The New York Review of Books)“In undertaking John Quincy Adams, Fred Kaplan. . . clearly is trying to do for the son what David McCullough did for the father. . . . It was a notable life, marked now by a notable biography.” (The Boston Globe)“John Quincy Adams should be required reading inside the Beltway. . . . Kaplan has penned a richly detailed canticle to his subject. . . . Kaplan’s narrative is both riveting and brimming with telling details.” (The Christian Science Monitor)“Well-researched and well-written. . . . An admiring and admirable account.” (The Wall Street Journal)“Insightful and engrossing. . . . As Kaplan makes plain in his own clear and finely chiseled prose, John Quincy Adams was, at his core, a writer. . . . A fine biography.” (Annette Gordon-Reed, The American Scholar)“An exemplary portrait. . . . Kaplan is accomplished at the art of biography.” (Louis P. Masur, The Los Angeles Review of Books)“Beautifully researched and written. . . . Biography fans, don’t miss this one.” (The Washingtonian, Best Books of the Month)“As well-written, comprehensive, and satisfying account of Adams’s personal life and career as we have seen in print.” (The Washington Times)“There is much to praise in this extensively researched book, which is certainly one of the finest biographies of a sadly underrated man. . . . These are the marks of a master historian and biographer.” (Carol Berkin, The Washington Post)

Many (most?) presidential biographers approach the subject from a historical or political perspective and emphasize events or societal currents, sometimes to the detriment of the subject of the biography. In the case of this biography, we have a retired English professor writing a biography of an extremely prolific political figure who had real literary talent. The focus of this work is clearly on the person and writings of Adams rather than other aspects of his life. And yet, even accepting this prospective bias, I am left unsatisfied by this work.On the positive side, it is an exhaustive study of John Quincy Adams, sixth President of the United States, 17-year Congressman, Senator, Secretary of State, professor, author, diarist (50 volumes!), and anti-slavery advocate. His is a remarkable story, and the author tells it in great detail, relying on correspondence and journals to provide a first-hand account of many incidents in Adams' life. That being noted, I found this book to be very tiresome, oddly organized, and lacking in historical and political context. For example, the author spends over 100 pages on the childhood and education of Adams but less than 40 on his presidency. What many authorities consider to be Adams' most significant period, his time in Congress, receives only a bit more coverage than childhood and early legal career. The author mentions significant historical events, e.g., the XYZ affair on page 156, without previous explanation. Elsewhere, the author begins to discuss a topic but leaves off without completing the discussion or explaining the significance of the matters mentioned. For example, the author mentions that Adams sent dozens of letters home from his travels in Silesia and was open to the possibility of their publication, and yet no mention is made of their ultimate publication in a 387-page book titled "Letters on Silesia" by a London publisher. The whole episode in Prussia and the travels in Silesia is given quite extended treatment in a chapter almost as long as the chapter on Adams as president, while Unger - another Adams biographer - considers this period in a chapter of just 15 pages, a much more appropriate allocation of space and effort. At various points in this otherwise literary-focused biography, there are interesting insinuations of political insight that attempt to co-opt Adams' legacy for progressive politics, notwithstanding the popular and long-standing view that Adams is properly considered a moderate conservative (even Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., a very progressive scholar, put Adams in that part of the political spectrum). At one point, the author describes Adams' political legacy as "land-grant universities, the Panama Canal, the Tennessee Valley Authority, the Federal Reserve, and the Interstate Highway System," and the back cover of the book links Adams to "FDR and Obama." Suffice it to say that the book did not persuade me that the Adams lineage extended quite so far in that direction, and further elaboration (in an already overlong book) would have been necessary to properly substantiate such an assertion.A biographer must sift the sources and make assessments of the relative weight of various segments of the subject's life. These tasks are especially important when dealing with someone whose personal diaries extend to 50 volumes, for whom there are many public records and speeches, and who has been the subject of many other biographies. This book would have benefited from a heavy and objective editing, and, absent such, I cannot recommend this book to any but fans of the author or enthusiasts of Adams for whom less lengthy - and more effective - biographies do not suffice.

75 of 83 people found the following review helpful. I thought long and hard about how I was going to rate this book . . . By David Zampino . . . and give it a reluctant -- but earned -- three stars.First -- the good bits (and there were quite a few!) The most valuable part of of this book begins with the fact that it was written at all. Critical biographies of significant leaders who have fallen out of the mainstream of public view are extremely important because they provide context and background and can thus provide a different and unique perspective that can be missed.I learned a great deal about a President about whom I already knew a fair amount. I knew that he was well-traveled in his youth -- but had no idea as to the extent of that travel. I knew that he was, at one point, Minister to Russia -- but was unaware of several of his other diplomatic postings. I knew that he was a remarkably well-educated and well-read individual -- but not to the depths of the matter. I knew that he served for 17 years with distinction in the United States House of Representatives following his Presidency -- but didn't previously know that this was public service that he felt was his duty to undertake -- even against his family wishes, and, in the end, to the detriment of his health. In short, I found that I had learned a great deal -- and that what I learned was interesting and informative. There were two glaring negatives, each one costing the book a star.1) Both in the promotional material sent to me (understandable) AND in the blurbs and introduction to the book itself (much less appropriate) both the author and the publisher go out of their way to pre-dispose the reader to a particular conclusion: namely, that John Quincy Adams, Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Roosevelt and Barak Obama viewed the Presidency in similar ways and had similar progressive points of view which guided their respective Presidencies. Now this may be true or this may be false (and in my view, the author did not make that case) but as an avid reader of history and historical biography, I want to be allowed to form my own conclusions without prompting.2) In a somewhat similar vein, there were times in the text when one could not be sure if Quincy Adams' view was being presented, or if Fred Kaplan's view about what he thought Quincy Adams' view was (or should have been) was being presented. For example, during the discussion of the Mexican-American War during the Polk administration, it was clear that Quincy Adams opposed both the war and the President. So far, so good. But while the author was analyzing the opinions of the House during the war, it was difficult to ascertain whether Quincy Adams felt the war was illegal; whether Kaplan felt the war was illegal (a subject for a different book); or whether Kaplan "felt" that Quincy Adams felt the war was illegal. In other words, was I reading Quincy Adams' view (which is what I wanted to learn) or was I reading the author's view (which wasn't supposed to be the point of the book.)Just let me read the book and form my own conclusions . . . if I want further information, I know how to find it.

UNEVEN By JoeV At the risk of stating the obvious, John Quincy Adams should be remembered for more than being the son of a Founding Father and a one-term President. So a new biography to bring him out of the historical fog is a welcome and well worthy endeavor. Unfortunately - at least for this reader - this book isn't it.First, this cradle to the grave biography is a very concerted effort to humanize JQA; a very admirable task, for much like his father, John Quincy took his public service and sense of duty very seriously; and therefore also much like his father, he was not the easiest to person to "like". The reader is presented with JQA's extensive reading list, his writings/ opinions and prose/poetry - much of this quoted directly from his letters, speeches and his lifelong journal. So there are a lot of quotes - too many for this reader - this over-reliance resulting in the narrative both losing its flow and poignancy.Don't get me wrong, there is much I learned here - particularly how much JQA traveled during his lifetime - this when 50 miles was a "journey" - how hard he worked - and another for instance - Mrs. JQA's health issues. Poor Louisa Adams seemingly never feeling well for any extended period of time causing much concern and never permitting the marriage to blossom into the partnership the senior Adams and Abigail had.One other quirk of the narrative worth mentioning here. Events in JQA's life are stated - his marriage, appointments, elections - with the circumstances leading to them subsequently covered. Not necessarily a bad technique in and of itself, but here the transitions aren't smooth and at times, aren't coherent - which became confusing.Lastly the closer JQA came to center stage in his life - meaning Washington, DC - the less detailed this narrative becomes - his presidency and time served in Congress - almost 25 years - covered superficially in the last 140 pages of this almost 600 page book.John Quincy's was an accomplished life - many of his achievements outside of the public/historical spotlight, i.e. the Monroe Doctrine, the Treaty of Ghent. He was much more than simply his father's son and much like David McCullough's bio did for his father, deserves to come out of the historical shadows. This book makes a valiant effort, but alas, results only in a step in the right direction.

I still don't like his walking away from Theodocia, but I understand him a little better. Although truthfully, not sure he would be good father material so walking away was probably the best thing he could have done for her. He's a killer. I understand that is part of what he does for a living, but he ruthlessly and without regret killed people. And when he gets chosen for a new career, he jumps right in without thinking about the consequences. At different turns throughout this book, I wanted to reach in and slap some sense into him.Strangely, maybe because unlike everyone else I didn't romanticized him, this one seemed longer than the others. It was very good, yet I was ready for it to be over. That is not to say that I don't want to learn what happens with Niko in the future book, but that he wasn't one of my favorite characters.

So as he grew up he became violent and used to sleep with a bunch of women. He likes weapons and was trained in martial arts. There was never any love in his life until Theodocia came into it. He fell hard for her.He trained to become a Gladiator. So atleast he could send her money because he felt unfit to be a Dad. When Theodocia left it broke his heart. "I will always love her and hate her for showing me what love is." Will the road of the Gladiator lead him to where he wants to be or is it setting him up for more trouble. Will he find a way back to his "Dosy" or not? This book 6 in a miniseries setting up for the Omega series coming out in October. They are all super short but super good

Without Theodocia in his life, Niko has nothing else to focus on but his goal to become a sponsored Olympian. Being recruited as the youngest fighter in the Gladiator guild, he is undoubtably a fierce warrior but it's his emotions that are now in turmoil. Niko has never had an easy life coming from a turbulent, dangerous and chilling childhood where each day was a fight to survive. So when Niko found the arena, he realized it was the one place to let out his rage with no remorse. The only catch to his complete dream is Niko's new benefactor, Cleon, has a job for him, which may lead him down a new plan that could end any chances with Theodocia. Overall, another great backstory. Niko is a torchered soul; his need for power and money all stems from his haunting childhood. It's a dark short story and Niko's past that keeps him from believing in a hopeful future. I really hope he doesn't do too many dark deeds that end up keeping him away from Theodocia and his child, but I'll just have to wait to read and see.------Read more of my reviews at: http://heyitwasfree.blogspot.com/------

Best Ebook How To Pray In Combat When Your Mind Is Off: How To Be Prayed Up, by Martin Latigue

How do you pray in a time like this when your mind is gone so fast, you can't think? How do you pray in combat when your mind is off? When we went to South Vietnam, I could go to the front line to fight the enemy, but I couldn't ride on the front of the bus, illegal in south. Draftee were ordered to join the armed forces, most of the men were from the south and southwest. President Kennedy had asked fellow Americans, asked not what your country can do for you but asked what you can do for your country. We were all drafted by him. No one knew for certain if this was the start-up that change the prejudiced of the country. I believed that we want to serve our country and would overlook our own prejudices in order to serve. We were together all of time in training and fellowship, on and off duty. We would overcome culture and ethnic differences. The army had a timetable set to get this division in the war in Vietnam (First Cavalry Airmobile) .So the training was very hard and fast. This was the first time helicopters would be used to fight in a battle. The battalion commander Col. Moore had us well train and disciplined. By the fellowship we had became brothers before going to Vietnam. After fifty years, we still go together; we meet once a year. We would need this brotherly love to fight for each other in the bigger battle of the war. In combat, you don't have time to think about what you are doing; you just do it. Your training takes over. How do you pray in a time like this when your mind is gone so fast, you can't think?

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Blindsight By Angie Elle Thank you to Adriane Leigh for providing a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.Blindsight is a tough book to review, because to be honest, I’m still not sure what the hell happened. What makes it difficult right off the bat is that I never really connected with either character, but I’m not sure I was meant to. (At least not yet.) Secrets abound in this book that even the reader isn’t privy to. That makes it nearly impossible to get to know who you’re reading about, and the whole experience makes the reader feel disconnected. The story is interesting. As far as we know, Hunter takes erotic photos for a living, and Erin is down on her luck in desperate need of a job if she wants to remain in her current living situation. Hunter offers her a job as his PA, solving that problem. But working with him brings a whole slew of new ones, including an attraction she isn’t ready for. Erin is unable to resist Hunter’s advances, and they embark on a relationship of sorts where neither really knows the other one. There were some intimate scenes here, but because of the detachment I felt toward the characters, it lacked the steam I was hoping for. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that of the two, Hunter seems to have a closet that has more skeletons than a graveyard. The book ends on a cliffhanger, but not the one you think it’s going to be.So here’s the thing – this book is part of a serial, and I reserve the right to change my rating once I’ve read all three parts. I’m hopeful that this is all going to come together in a way that wows me. Wild by this same author is one of my go-to reads when I want a dirty talking hero, and his book started off like this one. Not plot-wise, but Wild was full of secrets, particularly on the heroine’s side, and it took a while before the characters warmed up enough to each other to be themselves, and that one ended up being a huge win for me. I’m really not sure where this series is going, so I’m going to cross my fingers and trust the author on this one. This review was originally posted at Badass Book Reviews.

By Somersjjs From the prologue, I expected to go into something so different then what I was reading, that I could not stop. The prologue was a tease and had to find out how this tied into what I was reading. It starts about a woman that was needing to find a better paying job, other than the internet job she was doing. She's on her way to an appointment, she arrives late, missing it. She runs into a man, and through talking he finds out she's looking for a job, he hands her his card, telling her to call him for a job. She calls, meets with him, taking the job. Turns out he's a photographer of expicit pictures. During the interview she suspects that he is olding back something. They travel to exotic places for him to photograph models, on short notice, to her (giving her 30 minutes to get ready.)She feels an attraction to him but it develops more to sexual. He holds back from sex even though, at times, they sleep in the same bed.During the time I started reading it drew me in and made me wonder how the prologue fit with the story. I had to read through the night to get answers to a lot of my questions.l My most wanted answer came the last few chapters of the boo which ends in a cliffhanger. Now I have to read the next book to have even more questions answered, but that's OK as I need to know.. The is a trilogy. The next book is to be released November 2015.The draw, of the story is what kept me in suspense and reading to find the answers to my questions. I usually don't read suspense, unless the story can grab my curosity within the first chapter or two, which between the prologue and the first two chapters I had so many questions that I had to find out what was going to happen with the characters. I still have so many more questions and hope for the next book in a few weeks. If you are intrigued, as I was, I encouraged you to read the book.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. What a hot mess 1 & ½ Stars By Avalon Nothing worse than reading a plot that makes no sense. Terrible grammar. No flow from one paragraph to the next. I bet this would be improved tremendously if it was edited by a good editor, & made into one book, not 3, as I just found out.. Grrrr!!
