This is the true story of Nimrod Johnson Miller, whose life was filled with adventures that few will ever experience. Born the seventh son of a Pennsylvanian farmer, he left his home in Cass County, Georgia to join the Confederate Army at the age of 20. Serving in the 18th Georgia Regiment, he fought in every major battle from Yorktown to Gettysburg. After his capture and release from the Union Army, Nimrod left behind the world he knew for the lawless and free plains of Texas. Despite all the oppression he faced, first as a soldier in the Civil War, and through his gradual rise to Sheriff in Reconstruction-Era Texas, Nimrod never flinched from the call of duty or pursuit of justice. He was truly the stuff legends are made of.

By joliefille This is an excellent source of information about many of the battles of the civil war and the early stages of Reformation-era Texas, but it reads more like a novel than a textbook. I recommend it to American History buffs, especially those interested in Texas or Southern history.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great book! I grew up in Charleston By David M. Elsey Great book! I grew up in Charleston, SC, and love learning about civil war history from a southern perspective. This work goes a step further by marrying those sentiments from one individual's vantage point, taking the reader on a private tour via a glimpse of his own personal journal. We get to experience the civil war, not so much from political sound bites, but from the mind and heart of a young man who lived and survived it. Then, as an unexpected bonus, we are treated to a dash of the untamed frontier, as the story follows his path to Texas and how he transformed from soldier to a law man of the Wild West. It's a smooth, vacation read, but would likewise make an approachable history book for schools, as it is a well-researched, first-hand approach.
