Charles Erlandson First, be aware that this is only Volume 1 of Keble's biography and will not cover significant aspects of his life. One of the great mysteries and oversights of history is why an adequate modern biography of John Keble remains unwritten. It seems a tragedy to me (since I studied Keble for 3 years for my Ph.D. in Religious Studies) that the best biography of Keble is still the first one, written in 1869 by J.T. Coleridge, 3 years after Keble's death. Other biographies of Keble have been written since Coleridge's, but, in spite of the 19th century style of biography represented by this work, none of them are as good. The most recent biography of Keble is Georgina Battiscombe's "John Keble: A Study in Limitations." What kind of biographer subtitles the biography of her subject: "A Study in Limitations"?! That all men have limitations is self-evident. The irony is that the nearly unanimous consensus of Keble's peers and contemporaries was that he was a modern-day saint. It is astounding that the most recent biography of a man of Keble's stature is now almost 50 years old. What's even more baffling and disappointing is that no one has bothered to edit Keble's letters.J.T. Coleridge was a close family friend of John Keble (and a relative of Samuel Taylor Coleridge) and had access to the necessary persons and documents (as well as his own remembrances) to write Keble's first biography. Coleridge's biography is very sympathetic to Keble without being too hagiographical. It is filled with wonderful remembrances of the actual life of Keble, something that is difficult for later biographers to reconstruct, and throughout the work Coleridge provides a good sample of some of the more important correspondence of Keble.Coleridge proceeds chronologically with Keble's life and gives adequate attention to all of the important periods and events in Keble's life: his stellar career as a student in Oxford; his meeting Newman at Oxford (Keble was 9 years Newman's senior and originally Newman was in awe of Keble); his writing of "The Christian Year" in 1827 and his consequent fame; his role in the Oxford Movement and the writing of the Tracts for the Times, as well as his role in the ensuing controversies; his decision to stay in the Church of England and help preserve it when Newman left for Rome; his faithful pastoring of his little flock at Hursley for the last 35 years of his life; and his later years. What emerges from Coleridge's work is a three-dimensional picture of John Keble: the faithful pastor, famous poet, influential professor, and one of the most beloved men in England in the 19th century. It is still a work reading, not only because it remains the best biography of Keble but because in many ways Keble is a man to admire and imitate. While Coleridge doesn't gloss over Keble's limitations, his biography is a worthy tribute to one of the most influential men in the history of Anglicanism, but also one of the most forgotten.I heartily recommend this biography of a major and compelling 19th century figure and am grateful that it has now been republished.
