Excellent overview of a neglected aspect of the Civil War period By Doug Erlandson "For the Union and the Catholic Church," by Max Longley, is a much-needed addition to works on the period in the United States leading up to and including the Civil War. In it, Longley discusses a relatively neglected topic (namely, the attitude of Catholics in America and abroad to the Civil War). By tracing the lives of four men who converted to Catholicism during the 1840s and cleverly weaving their stories into the larger account, the book provides a comprehensive overview of the various positions held by Catholics on the war and the related slavery issue. The four men singled out for consideration are General William Rosecrans, his brother Bishop Sylvester Roescrans, Father James Healy (the first African-American Catholic priest), and Orestes Brownson (a writer and publisher).What is perhaps most striking is the disagreement among American Catholics concerning the justification for the Civil War, why it should be fought, or, for that matter, whether the war was even justified. If this were all the book covered, it would be a worthwhile read. However, "For the Union and the Catholic Church" also sets the disagreements among American Catholics within the broader story of Catholicism in general and particularly the events in Europe that at the time were influencing the attitude of the Papacy. Longley does an excellent job of showing how the revolutionary movements in Europe and particularly the attempt to unify Italy under the leadership of King Victor Immanuel II caused Pius IX, who succeeded the reactionary Gregory XVI, to move from a fairly progressive position at the start of his long reign to a reactionary stance by the time of the Civil War.Although I've read numerous books on the Civil War over a period of more than half a century, "For the Union and the Catholic Church" gave me a glimpse into events surrounding that war of which I was quite ignorant. I also appreciated the information as to what was going on in Europe at the time. Although I've also had a longstanding interest in church history and in the history of the Papacy in particular, the book gave me details of the events in Italy of which I was previously ignorant."For the Union and the Catholic Church" is published by McFarland (www.mcfarlandpub.com, 800-253-2187).I received a copy of this book from the publisher for review purposes. The contents of this work and the knowledge of the author is a rare treat indeed.Don't let the title fool you. This old Baptist man was completely captured throughout the entire book.The four main characters were used brilliantly to take us through a most difficult time in American history as well as the difficulties of the Catholic Church and its' impact on the American Civil War.I read mostly books on the antebellum period, Civil War, reconstruction and various religious/Christian works.The author has captured the best of these topics and put them together in a read that will grip you from the first page until the last. Personally, there was so much material that was new to me even though I have been a student of history most of my life.The impact ' on' the Catholic church and 'of' the Catholic church was especially fascinating.The problems of slavery split the nation as well as Catholics and Protestants, both in Europe and the United States.let me warn you, "This is not an easy read." The print is small and the history is very detailed and a bit complicated at times.This book is 'one of a kind' and stands alone in its' value to the serious reader."Bravo" to Max Longley. It was my honor to receive, read and review this extraordinary work.
