2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A disturbingly real look at the end of life By Robin C Nursing is difficult at best...and certainly not easy. It's a smelly, dirty job done by men and women who have either great hearts or very masochistic personalities....either way, they are under appreciated and grossly underpaid. This is a graphic look at the end of life from a nurse's point of view...very well written and somewhat irreverent...I loved it! Thanks, Ando!
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Tragic/Absurd Stories from Hospice Care By Michael Villanueva This book isn't for the faint of heart. But neither is it for anyone looking for a "horror story" as we typically think of it. There are ghastly things to be found here, certainly. But I think one should read it for an inside account of how absurd and tragic things can be for people approaching the end of their life. And have reached the end of their health. Most of what's in here are more vignettes than full stories. Using detailed, evocative description, the author recounts the horrors he's seen during his time as a hospice care nurse. They read as if he and I were at a bar, he sharing experiences from his line of work over a couple ales. More colloquial than clinical He pulls no punches, either in telling what his patients went through, or his own characterization. I mean, what do you say about a guy who was unable to hold back his cursing as a corpse pukes up blood mixed with other horrible substances? For me, I'd say I'd be dropping f-bombs too had I been there with towel in hand having to clean that literal sh*t up! That last lovely description comes from the most narrative part of the book, and one of my favorites, "That Means I Did My Job." My other favorite was "The Loneliness of Dementia," wherein we ask what use is everything we acquire in life when our mind, all our memories, and the seat of our being are reduced to virtually nothing? I was fascinated by the illustrations included in the book. They invoked the macabre absurdity of each scene they accompany. It's cliche to point out once again that we all have only so much time in life. Yet we don't as often recognize how much more limited our health is as well! I think the author has shown me, through the people he's helped, how helpless we can become later on. One day we will no longer enjoy the strength of our bodies and minds. So we should make the best of our most precious assets while we still have them.
0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A good read By seth This is a well written book that a thoroughly enjoyed, though I wouldn't recommend it to everyone. If you are easily offended or you have a weak stomach this probably isn't the book for you. Although if you have an interest in the strange and obscure or you want a better insight into what it is really like to be a nurse this is your book. Ando Ehlers is a masterful musician and a damn good writer in my opinion. But don't take my word for it buy his book and see for yourself his writing is full of truth, heart, and enough detail to make you feel as if you are in the room with him. Can't wait to read his next book of short stories.
