MAD MEN MEETS THE WIRE IN THIS GRIPPING TRUE-CRIME MEMOIR BY A FORMER AGENT AT THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF NARCOTICS IN 1960s NEW YORK
Before Nixon famously declared a "war on drugs," there was the Federal Bureau of Narcotics. New York City in the mid-1960s: The war in Vietnam was on the nation's tongue-but so is something else. Clandestine and chaotic, but equally ruthless, the agents of the Bureau were feared by the Mafia, dealers, pimps, prostitutes-anyone who did his or her business on the streets. With few rules and almost no oversight, the battle-hardened agents of the bureau were often more vicious than the criminals they chased. Agent Dean Unkefer was a naive kid with notions of justice and fair play when he joined up. But all that quickly changes once he gets thrown into the lion's den of 90 Church, the headquarters of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics, where he is shocked to see the agents he revered are often more like thugs than lawmen. When he finally gets the chance to prove his mettle by going undercover in the field, the lines become increasingly blurred. As he spirals into the hell of addiction and watches his life become a complex balancing act of lies and half-truths, he begins to wonder what side he is really on. 90 Church is both the memoir of one man's confrontation with the dark corners of the human experience and a fascinating window into a little-known time in American history. Learn the story of the agents who make the DEA look like choirboys.

Review
“[This] blistering true-crime memoir of addiction and undercover work is unlike any we've ever read.” ―Entertainment Weekly
“90 Church is a wild, terrifying, unpredictable, ride with ruthless, violent men--the sort who don't count the dead bodies and ruined lives they leave strewn behind them. And I'm referring to the 'good guys': The twisted, grizzled lawmen of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics. They pursue powerful Mafia families, slick amoral business pros, beautiful people, and Colombian cocaine barons alike with equal zest. The resolution of every glitch or kink in the process almost always involves a murder or two. With unerring pace and clear style, ex-agent Unkefer creates an irresistible and sometimes funny--but ultimately heartbreaking--first person narrative of his own, and his agency's, self-destruction. Treading the pages, the reader enters the upside down world of dealers, users, informants, assassins, pimps, crooked cops, and slimy middle class middle men. I found it shocking on multiple levels--the treachery of the agents to themselves, the informants, the criminals, their bureau, society, and their families. And in the end, the war on drugs wasn't theirs to lose--or win.” ―Marc Songini, author of Boston Mob: The Rise and Fall of the New England Mob and Its Most Notorious Killer

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. True crime with an historical background By JRPinet This was an amazing First Reads book. The author is a former federal agent who worked in the pre DEA narcotics squad at 90 Church St. This goes beyond tv fiction to the real, daily dangerous and seedy life of the drug dealers, the agents, and the truly evil criminals who are behind the drug and prostitution rings. The stories are too unnerving not to be true. If you like true crime with an historical background, this is the book. Some scenes are graphic and may be disturbing to some readers. The stories do not sugar coat the human frailties and dangers to both body and soul that these agents face every day. I am amazed at how much the author retained of all the twists and turns of events while he himself became addicted to drugs and alcohol. The book is a quick read even at 423 pages.
3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Great novel...where's the memoir? By G. Dorner From the first sentence, I doubted the veracity of this "nonfiction" book. Stating that narcotics agents pretended to be in the Central Intelligence Agency even before it was even founded has that effect on me. So does inventing the imaginary "Moon" mafia family in New York.If its essential untruth is overlooked, and this book is regarded as fictional, this is a pretty good novel.
2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Fictional Non Fiction By L. Lawlor If you are able to read this book as a "book of fiction" then you are likely to be o.k. It reads fairly well, and is interesting. However it is simply impossible to read this as a "non fiction". The anecdotes are simply too outrageous and way, way to far "over the top" to be even remotely accepted as true/real. If this organization, and I use the term loosely did in fact function (there i go again) in any way remotely similar to what is depicted, then we are all in trouble. Taking liberties in writing non-fiction is one thing, fabricating to the extent evidenced in this book is simply inexcusable, if as the author you are expecting to pass it off as a non fictional account.
