3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Linking Read Assessment to Instruction By Tabitha I ordered this textbook for my grad study course. It is a well printed and readable textbook. However, I did not find it very useful for the course it was recommend for. It did not provide detailed information for the course. The syllabus questions could not be adequately addressed using this textbook. I had to actually use other more comprehensive sources and online resources to compensate for the textbook. I purchased it because the school had it as a requirement for the course. I recommend buying this book used and not new or renting a copy for the course.

Rain of Gold is a true-life saga of love, family and destiny that pulses with bold vitality, sweeping from the war-ravaged Mexican mountains of Pancho Villa’s revolution to the days of Prohibition in California. It all began when Villaseñor’s maternal grandmother sat him down in their little home in the barrio of Carlsbad, California, gave him sweet bread and told him the story of their past. Of his mother Lupe, the most beautiful girl in the whole village who was only a child when Villa’s men came shooting into their canyon. And of his father Juan and his family, reduced to rags and starvation as they sought refuge across the border, where they believed that endless opportunity awaited. Lupe and Juan met and fell in love in California, but they found that the doors to the Promised Land were often closed to those from south of the border. His father was forced to take the law into his own hands, in spite of his wife’s objections. With love and humor, Villaseñor shares this passionate love story that celebrates the triumph of the human spirit. An all-American story of struggle and success, Rain of Gold focuses on three generations of Villaseñor’s kin, their spiritual and cultural roots back in Mexico, their immigration to California and overcoming poverty, prejudice and economic exploitation. It is the warm-hearted and spirited account of the wily, wary and persevering forebears of Victor Villaseñor.

In the Southern Baptist community where he grew up, he was a “difficult” child—restless, outspoken, and unconventional, with a flair for the dramatic. But for George Scott Chandler, the journey toward self-discovery and acceptance would lead him to an unexpected place: the fast-paced, high-stakes world of competitive marching and pageantry, where he found a whirlwind of color and movement, song and dance, and expression and creativity. Here, the hyperactivity and artistic temperament that made him the target of bullying over the years would finally allow him to thrive.

Now, as an award-winning choreographer and coordinator for the Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps, Chandler’s passion for the marching arts has allowed him to create, coach, and choreograph performances all over the world—from the Odyssey stage show in Nagoya, Japan, to the set of the hit television show Glee.

Filled with inspiring anecdotes and fascinating insights, FWD March is a true coming-of-age story for anyone who has ever felt alienated, bullied, or misunderstood, as well as fans of competitive marching everywhere.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. he never waivered in his passion and love for music and motion By Tara Nolan Read the entire book in one night. A "coming of age" story that takes the reader through a whole range of emotions. As I read about the author's struggles, while growing up, because he was perceived as "different", my heart hurt for him. However, he never waivered in his passion and love for music and motion....This internal desire moved him forward to a life of adventure and accomplishments that had me cheering! Although I LOVE music and dance, I am a person of no musical talent whatsoever, was never in the band and had no idea about the world of drum and bugle corps and I still found this book fascinating. If you want a great read about a person willing to take chances, a person driven by something bigger than their situation, a person that took negative and turned for positive....this is a book for you! He shows the reader that with determination and desire you really can accomplish your dreams.....By the way, it would make a great movie, a little bit of "Glee", a little bit of "Pitch Perfect", and a little bit of "Rocky" rolled in to one....triumphing over your circumstances by putting one foot in front of the other!

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. If it's dance, do I step off on the right foot? By Kathy Holsworth This is a must read for anyone who marches, spins, twirls, dances, blows or bangs. You know who you are. Scott has changed the color guard and drum corps world with his innovations, imagination, and gift for visual story telling. Every time he has created something that we didn't understand, it was de rigueur within 3 years. This is not a bio or history, but great story telling from a great mind. Fair disclosure: I danced under his tutelage in Spirit '84. Changed my life then, and he was just getting started. He IS an industry maker.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. MUST READ for all teachers of the arts By Jen Shetland INCREDIBLE!!! Scott Chandler is brilliant, funny, and a MASTER artist, choreographer and writer. Whether you're a musician, dancer or performer or ANY kind, you will enjoy his insight into the marching arts. This is a MUST for any color guard, marching band, dci, or drill team coach!

The choice was brutal: abandon everything or live like a serf under the Castro Revolution. This is the story of a Cuban refugee who rejected serfdom. His story shatters the myths surrounding Castro and his revolution and draws a portrait of life in Cuba through its most turbulent years. It describes what it was like to grow up in a small town in central Cuba; live through the murderous Batista dictatorship; cope with the suffocating oppression of Castro’s totalitarian revolution; leave behind family, friends, everything he knew, everything he had; and struggle to make a new life in peace and freedom in the United States. A rich, personal, and illuminating narrative set in the historical context of the times.

I love autobiographies, and this one especially since it is about a regular person who is impacted by political and cultural events outside his control. The book is about Mr. Sosa and his family's life and situation before, during, and after the Cuban Revolution and later when they immigrated to America. I learned so much about Cuba, it's politics, history, culture, language, and people. I cannot tell you how much I admire this family's tremendous courage, and the faith required for them to leave everything and everyone they knew, and almost everything they owned, to come to the United States. This story reminded me how very blessed I am to live in the US and that this country is full of special and wonderful people who want to help people like the Sosa's. It is also a story of a family who was determined to succeed no matter the circumstances, and without excuses, and who wasn't too proud to start at the bottom. This book is full of stories of everyday courage, blessings, and of the hope that America provides to those who want to come to a better place where freedom and opportunity abound. This book also made me remember that our freedom is not free, and it is not automatic.I also enjoyed the writing style. I am sadly a bit of a book snob. I find it hard to read many books because during school I read so many powerful outstanding books. But, this book had style. It was matter of fact, was very readable, but also demonstrated the writer is an intelligent and keen observer of people and situations. Please read this book!

You can hear and feel the heartbreak for the Cuba that was lost and the dictatorship that was gained. In this book, History is personal, It is as a professor of mine once said "His Story". This is a story of love, loss, courage, hope and concern. We would all do well to read and heed. I have been ignorant regarding the history of our neighbor country Cuba, now I know more and know once again how little I know. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to one and all.

It fails as horror and fails as tragedy. All tears but no character with any humanity except for the little boy. Drivel.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Dark, dark, dark By Chris123 Anything for Her is a dark, harrowing, page-turner of a thriller.Louise Leighton's life, already at breaking point due to events that happened a year previously, falls apart when her husband confesses to cheating on her with her sister. Then her daughter, Brooke, goes missing, and the mystery of what happened that night begins to unfold at breakneck speed...This is a dark, dark, dark book, with twists and turns and everything in between. The pace is fast, the characters all flawed beyond help (in a well-drawn way) and the plot tight. Not for the feint of heart, but definitely one for fans of crime thrillers. Recommended.*I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. LOVED IT!!! By Mattie Jack Jordan has outdone himself with, "Anything For Her." It is difficult to believe that this is his first novel. His storytelling is superb. He paints his characters in vivid colors and as dysfunctional as some of them may seem, he brings them to life with amazing results. I truly enjoyed this novel and I have recommended it to several friends. If your expecting a predictable ending you won't get it in this book. I look forward to more from Jack Jordan.

Growing into adulthood, how do we construct our self-understanding, envision the roles we might play in the world, shape our beliefs? This book tests the idea that imagination plays a key part in forming possible pictures of ourselves and our worlds, which we test for validity by putting them into action—by performing them—assessing the results, and then incorporating them into our growing sense of self and world. On a sabbatical from teaching literature at Boston College, the author, a Jesuit priest, envisioned writing a book about the imagination, but he first spent twenty-three days on an Outward Bound program in the San Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado, thinking he might learn something about being a better teacher and about how his students’ used their imaginations to construct their presence in the world. The journal of that intensive experience with a small group of young men the age of his own students—130 miles of hiking in rugged alpine wilderness, peak climbs, river crossings, three days of silent meditation, and a variety of other physical and psychological challenges—became the basis for this book, exploring how the imagination contributes to—in Kierkegaard’s interesting phrase—making the real possible.

By Classics Lover Please do yourself a favor and check out “Touching Mountains: The Imagination and Surrounding Country,” by J.A. Appleyard. This book succeeds spectacularly in both entertaining and enlightening the reader.“Touching Mountains” is a compelling story of adventures in Colorado mountains – but it’s much more than that. The narrative is blended with original insights into how imagination helps us meet new challenges. The book features vivid characters and anecdotes. It also offers an optimistic vision of how we confront immediate experience with imaginative responses to become our better selves. Ultimately the book is exhilarating, funny, provocative, profound, and life-affirming.Touching Mountains traces the adventures of a 40-ish literature professor who signs up for an intense Outward Bound course as part of a sabbatical away from campus in the 1970s. During his 23-day journey with other men through Colorado’s rugged San Juan mountains, the author confronts tough challenges, while observing and reflecting on how he and others gain new skills, confidence, and maturity. The author combines absorbing accounts of his and the group’s experiences and interesting mountain lore with insights into how we learn, discover new images, and change for the better. Along the journey, he contemplates the uniqueness of hands-on experience, the power of imagining new ways of living, our ability to act out new roles as if on a stage, the excitement of expanding our limits, and the satisfaction of discovering new capabilities and realities.Appleyard skillfully portrays unforgettable characters such as a comic clown who learns nothing from experience and wallows in self pity; a shadowy course director who intentionally articulates only vague goals for the course; an enigmatic instructor who has done it all from rock climbing and sailing to cowboying and helping an Indian tribe rediscover a sacred site; a tough kid from the inner city who chose Outward Bound over reform school; a shy kid who had never spent a night away from home but blossoms during the course; and many other intriguing personalities.Appleyard also recognizes that every book necessarily paints a self-portrait of its author, and gradually unveils his own likeable visage as a learned, funny, and analytical teacher who thinks hard about what he sees but doesn’t take himself too seriously.A few of the absorbing scenes described in the book include a frigid Outward Bound initiation in a roaring river, comic efforts to build a ramshackle shelter from a small tarp, comically elaborate map and compass charting, a close encounter with hypothermia, a harrowing overhanging rappel, technical rock climbing, sliding on snowfields with ice axes, building a makeshift sauna, crossing slippery logs over river gorges, climbing 14,000 foot peaks, fishing in high altitude lakes, leading through adversity and exhaustion, and navigating untried routes through high rock spires. These scenes are effectively interwoven with profound reflections about discovery versus invention, maps versus reality, belief versus conviction, direct and indirect learning, art and illusion, how expectations shape experience, the power of new paradigms, the limits of human imagination, the gift and meaning of tomorrow, God’s power over the natural world, lessons learned from journeys and fiction, the value of limits transcended, images as recipes or instructions, the excitement of firsthand experience in learning, and many other intriguing topics.Don’t miss this great new book.

More than an adventure story By Studiodog I know two people in my life who have completed the three week Outward Bound course, one who was twenty and did the same Colorado experience (only with skis) and the second person, who was 16 who finished the Utah course amidst the heat and the rock. Like the author, these two individuals signed on with the intention of learning more about themselves through the experiential lens of a physical challenge. I believe they accomplished this goal, although over the years, I have noticed, the stories increase and their understanding has deepened. So I wonder, why is that?Having read the book, I have an inkling as to why this is true. One, I am struck by the author's effort to complete the course in his 40s. It wasn't the physical challenge--he seemed more than capable (even though some of the descriptions of near hypothermia and rock climbing are harrowing) but more the state-of-mind of someone who has been on this earth more than twenty years more than his compatriots. To top that off, the book is written some 40 years after the experience! As much as I enjoyed the descriptions of the San Juans and his fellow hiking buddies, (I am a sucker for climbing/adventure stories) I looked eagerly for the moments of contemplation. For that reason, I think this book is perfect for the person in their second half of life who finds him or herself pondering life-- as the author quotes Jung "The integration of the Self, taken in its profoundest sense, is a matter for the second half of life." For me this book highlights how much we can't know of our life as lived until much later --as he says in his preface from 1974 "you can find out only so much about the terrain from studying maps beforehand. The reality is always surprising."

OConnell Set in the mountains of Colorado the author's cleverly written narrative hooked me right away. His interesting writing style and intricately crafted passages transported me from the couch on which I sat while reading, to the rocky ridges and starlit nights he so beautifully described. To say this book is about a man's adventures in the Outward bound program would be a brief, but fairly inaccurate description of the authors intentions. The author undertook the Outward Bound challenge hoping to better understand how the imagination is formed. I found myself fascinated by some of the metaphors used to describe imagination, particularly those involving perspective.I have spent a lot of time pondering what the author walked away from the Outward Bound course with. Did the course help him understand how his own imagination formed? These questions led me to wonder, how has my imagination been formed? Is it crafted with just one of many possible perspectives? How does my imagination fit into my everyday life? How does it contribute to my behaviors? This is a cleverly written book, and will probably strongly appeal to those with a background in literature. The book appealed to me because I like the great outdoors and appreciated a chance to both escape and use my mind at the same time.

The author of the immortal Lolita and Pale Fire, born to an eminent Russian family, conjures the apotheosis of the high modernist artist: cultured, refined--as European as they come. But Vladimir Nabokov, who came to America fleeing the Nazis, came to think of his time here as the richest of his life. Indeed, Nabokov was not only happiest here, but his best work flowed from his response to this exotic land.

Robert Roper fills out this period in the writer’s life with charm and insight--covering Nabokov’s critical friendship with Edmund Wilson, his time at Cornell, his role at Harvard’s Museum of Comparative Zoology. ButNabokov in America finds its narrative heart in his serial sojourns into the wilds of the West, undertaken with his wife, Vera, and their son over more than a decade. Nabokov covered more than 200,000 miles as he indulged his other passion: butterfly collecting. Roper has mined fresh sources to bring detail to these journeys, and traces their significant influence in Nabokov’s work: on two-lane highways and in late-’40s motels and cafés, we feel Lolita draw near, and understand Nabokov’s seductive familiarity with the American mundane.Nabokov in America is also a love letter to U.S. literature, in Nabokov’s broad embrace of it from Melville to the Beats. Reading Roper, we feel anew the mountain breezes and the miles logged, the rich learning and the Romantic mind behind some of Nabokov’s most beloved books.

Nabokov in America: On the Road to Lolita, by Robert Roper

Review

“Fascinating. . . An evocative portrait of the novelist in the United States that's pungent with small, revealing Nabokovian details . . . Mr. Roper has succeeded in making a persuasive case for the essential role America played both in shaping Lolita and helping to configure the gyroscopic spin of Nabokov's later career.” ―Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times

“Nabokov in America is rewarding on all counts, as biography, as photo album (there are many pictures of people, Western landscapes and motels) and as appreciative criticism. Not least, Roper even avoids the arch style so often adopted by critics faintly trying to emulate their inimitable subject.” ―Washington Post

"A learned, intense, and yet approachable book . . . Roper provides a powerful argument for the role America played in shaping one of the 20th century’s literary giants." ―Boston Globe

"Roper, rather stunningly, puts Nabokov, the Russian emigre, fully in America . . . One of the best of all biographical studies of the author." ―Buffalo News, Editor's Choice

“In this enjoyable new biography of his American years, [Roper] follows the author of Lolita and Pale Fire on a 20-year journey across America . . . A fresh look at Nabokov's writing and literary associations, including his contentious friendship with Edmund Wilson. It's a great read.” ―San Jose Mercury News

“Compelling and oddly comic, this tale of the Nabokovs and their life in America is fascinating reading . . . Roper has done a crisp and inspired job exploring this momentous literary figure and his place as a strange piece of 20th-century Americana.” ―starred review, Library Journal

“In this fresh and engaging biography, biographer, novelist, and critic Roper traces the trajectory of his career, friendships, and family life, as well as his indefatigable passion for butterflies. Drawing judiciously on Brian Boyd's Vladimir Nabokov: The American Years (1991) and Stacy Schiff's biography of Vera Nabokov (1999), as well as the writer's correspondence, Roper illuminates such works as Pnin, Speak, Memory, and Pale Fire.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“Roper's biography is at once a general introduction and a dissertation on the Russian-born émigré's career and novels written in America . . . Through much original material (notes to publishers, letters to his wife, son Dimitri's memoir), Roper captures Nabokov's arrogance, his brilliance as a lecturer and translator, his passion and mastery of the Russian oeuvre, and his childlike happiness throughout his adult life . . . sure to satiate Nabokov fanatics.” ―Booklist

“The transposition of the highly Europeanized Russian Vladimir Nabokov to America, and his fruitful presence here, is a fascinating adventure that Robert Roper has the estimable chops to convey. I've read a lot of books about Nabokov but this is my favorite.” ―Thomas McGuane

About the Author Robert Roper's journalism appears in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, National Geographic, Outside, and other publications. He won the 2002 Boardman-Tasker Prize for his book Fatal Mountaineer, and his most recent book, Now the Drum of War, was an Editor's Choice pick in the New York Times Book Review. He has also published several novels. He teaches at Johns Hopkins University and lives in Baltimore and California.

Reeves Lovers of great literature and of Nabokov in particular will find this book invaluable. I thought I knew Nabokov and his work, but I learned a lot reading it. Roper obviously did an astonishing amount of research on his subject, tracking his wanderings in the United States and beyond and his relationships with other writers, editors, and friends (and occasional enemies). Even more impressive is Roper's depth of understanding of Nabokov and the books. Finally, this book is itself beautifully written and a pleasure to read. I'm going to keep it in my library and I know that I will dip back into it frequently.

A Brief Crack of Light By Christian Schlect I have read but two of Vladimir Nabokov's many books, so it is difficult for me to accurately judge Mr. Roper's in-depth literary examination of Nabokov's labors. There is no difficulty in saying that Mr. Roper burned a lot of time and tossed a great amount of effort into researching and intelligently writing "Nabokov in America."I can also say that anyone with an interest in Nabokov will find this book rewarding. The trips west, the high-mountain butterfly collecting, the teaching stint at Cornell, the friendship with Edmund Wilson, his close relationships with wife and child, and, above all, his talented writing are all here. The book is enhanced by extensive end-notes and a good bibliography.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Time and again while reading this it occurred to me that this book could easily be the basis for a multi-part television series By L Mandrake Jr I've read Lolita and Pnin multiple times along with some other works by Vladimir Nabokov, and thought this book would provide some interesting insights into those works. And I was also familiar with the broad outlines of the author's biography. While this book provides less background information on the novels than I was expecting it shares a remarkable family's story. Time and again while reading this it occurred to me that this book could easily be the basis for a multi-part television series. The son alone, though certainly a side character here, is clearly a fascinating character. From the first--where we learn how close run his being in America at all was--to the end, this is a thoroughly enjoyable read.

Masters for Life (Masters Saga Book 2), by Ginger Voight

About the Author Ginger Voight is a screenwriter and bestselling author with more than twenty published titles in fiction and nonfiction. Her nonfiction works cover everything from travel to politics, while her works of fiction range from romance to the paranormal, as well as dark “ripped-from-the-headlines” topics, such as those featured in her book Dirty Little Secrets. Ginger discovered her love for writing in the sixth grade, courtesy of a Halloween assignment. From then on, writing became a thing of solace, reflection, and security. When she found herself homeless in L.A. at the age of nineteen, she wrote her first novel in longhand on notebook paper while living out of her car. In 1995, after she lost her nine-day-old son, she worked through her grief by writing the story that would eventually become The Fullerton Family Saga. In 2011, she embarked on a new journey: to publish romance novels starring heroines who look like the average American woman. These “Rubenesque romances” have developed a following thanks to her bestselling Groupie series. Other titles, such as the highly-rated Fierce series, tap into the American preoccupation with reality TV, giving her contemporary stories a current, pop-culture edge. Ginger isn’t afraid to push the envelope with characters who are perfectly imperfect. Rich or poor, sweet or selfish, gay or straight, plus-size or svelte, her characters are beautifully flawed and three-dimensional. They populate her lavish fictional landscapes and teach us more about the real world in which we live, through their interactions with each other, and often through gut-wrenching angst. Ginger’s goal with every book is to give her readers a little bit more than they were expecting, with stories they’ll never forget. For more, please visit gingervoight.com. I found myself flicking through pages of dialogue that for me didn't really matter and were not important to the story. If I'm honest, I got a tad bored with in parts. A little too much toing and froing. In saying that though, I cannot wait for the next book to see where this is going. Devlin devastated me. I don't want to give anything away however he really disappointed me. Hurry up Ginger and release number three!

Coralie's life definitely took a turn towards the chaotic when she met Devlin Masters.Masters for Life sees Coralie and Devlin trying to settle into their new life together while simultaneously making plans for the future. Coralie still has dreams for herself and her company. Devlin has plans as well but as he's not an open book by any stretch of the imagination, it's hard to know what his true plans are. And, of course, there are obstacles. In fact, there are quite a few things standing in between them and their HEA. Their courtship was crazy fast and trust seems a sticking factor. And as things come to light and events occur, it seems Devlin may be the biggest obstacle. New players are introduced and the stakes are very high indeed.I have to say that at times some of the angst and drama were a bit too much for me. There were so many times I wanted to shake both Coralie and Devlin. Or tell them to grow up. Their feelings for one another - their chemistry - is undeniable. But can they both move past the past and get over the hangups and insecurities to truly trust one another? That's the million dollar question.Voight has spun a riveting story around Coralie and Devlin. I'm dying to know what happens next - especially after that ending. I'm fully invested in them and seeing their story to fruition despite the melodrama. One thing I've always appreciated about Voight's stories are the unconventional heroines. Coralie is one of those heroines, not fitting the standard of beauty which matters greatly since her family's business is in fashion. I relate to Coralie in certain ways and am enjoying seeing her blossom. Devlin is still such an enigma. He has quite a story that he seems unwilling, or at least very reluctant, to share. But I *need* to know. Some of the events though...I'm not sure he can talk his way out of. We'll see.Voight also provides an interesting supporting cast, although we see less of Lucy and Gus, Gretchen, and Coralie's father, than in book one. I do like how Voight manages to weave in cameos of characters from her other series as well. They all add a little something to the story as well as adding to the character development.Even though some of the drama was a little much for me, I'm kinda tied up in knots over what comes next for Coralie and Devlin. It's a really good thing book #3, Masters Forever, is already available.

Ginger Voight has taken me on one helluva wild ride. Masters For Hire blew me away. I was addicted from page one and I just could not put it down. Everything I thought I knew after book one was completely thrown out the window. And right along with Coralie, I am left here wondering: "Who in the heck is Devlin Masters?"Picking up right where we left off in Masters for Hire, we watch anxiously as Coralie and Devlin start their married life together. Knowing both her father and her ex-boyfriend are going to be in total shock, so starts the merry-go-round Coralie is forced to ride while everyone else decides her life for her. She is at first still the timid, plump woman who hired Devlin to make her feel wanted. And now she's the wife who is forced to accept her new husband, no questions asked, all the while wondering just how much she actually knows about him and his past. Soon, new alliances are formed and Coralie's head, much like mine, was spinning. Talk about info overload! I was amazed the poor woman could keep up.With her world completely upside-down and her heart feeling unsteady at times, this whirlwind adventure in just 4 months time was enough to make my stomach ache. I just knew that other shoe had to drop and so did she. With some unexpected help from a former associate of Devlin's, everything just starts to unravel. Coralie tries to fight back but she soon finds that perhaps the battle isn't worth it.Oh wow. Devlin is as sexy as ever. He seems to want to give his wife the world, including a baby, but his darkness, his secrets, his explosive behavior are all just too unsettling. He truly is a predator or so we are left to think and I'm hopeful everything will be explained from his POV in the last book of this series. The author has written a very powerful and angst-filled book that I honestly have never seen from her. This feels like new territory for her and I couldn't be happier. There are so many layers and so much at stake for our heroine, I'm beyond cautious as to how it will all conclude.A read well worth your time but you must read book 1 first. You need to get the whole story, the beautiful love that I know can be resurrected but for now has been left to a small smolder. Let's hope the author can stoke the fire and the passion between Coralie and Devlin and give us our well-deserved happily ever after.A huge 5+ stars.

A part of me hates Derek because of the way he flaunts himself, because he doesn’t seem to care that he uses women like they are nothing more than a body to warm his bed for a few hours. But what I hate even more is the fact that I want him. The more he teases me, brushes up against me as we pass each other, and slips in dirty innuendos during our conversations, the more I want to slap him, and then give myself to him like so many other women have done. Derek I know Charlotte hates me, loathes me, and thinks I’m a player, but what she might not know is that those little touches I give her, those filthy little slips in the conversation that have her blushing and getting embarrassed, turn me on like a fiend. I never said I was a good guy, and that I didn’t sleep around back in the day, because I did. But I’ve never wanted anyone the way I want her. My past is tainted, but how surprised would she be if she found out I haven’t been with anyone in longer than I cared to admit? How shocked would Charlotte be if I admitted I’ve stayed away from other girls because I want her that badly? Warning: This story will feature an over the top and completely obsessed alpha hero. It will also be slightly unbelievable (but only in the best kind of way), and is focused on the hero taking what he wants from the heroine. It mainly focuses on the dirty, raunchy, and oh so tasty aspects of a story. If you’re up for a short filthy read, enjoy!

A perfect stepbrother love story By Linda W Finally, a stepbrother book that turns out the way I wanted!Derek has it bad for his stepsister, Charlotte. He knows she's the only one for him but she hates him. He never thinks she feels the same way.How is he going to get to her? When another guy makes a move on Charlotte, Derek's caveman comes roaring out. He can only hope she lets him in.I loved this book so much. The ending is perfect. A must read

By micharch Derek and Charlotte have been step-siblings for 3 years and both are attracted to the other. Derek is now obsessed with Charlotte and wants her as his no matter the consequences. Charlotte is a good girl and is sick of Derek and his bad reputation and ways. Derek finally takes matter into his own hands and sets about making Charlotte realize that she is the one for him, that there are no others. Charlotte, with the help of her mother, gets over her apprehension and stands next to Derek. It was a short read and did have a good ending.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Quick and sweet. By MayaTheBookExplorer I admit I wasn't sure what to expect from this one, since everybody said how much of a player (aka. the title name) he was. But there was no OW drama at all. What he did mention of his past sex life didn't bother me, since his feelings for 'his woman' came across really strong and sincere, that made me forget all his previous ONSs'.I liked seeing his many layers. From a complete jackass to a sweet and caring lover. Also, I could relate to h's situation and her fears of her parents disapproval. I was not shocked but definitely surprised of the parents reaction when they found out (specially after the way they found out, ahem). The epilogue was really sweet, too.A great short and steamy taboo read.SPOILER ALERTSafety gang: It's safe. There is no OW drama but there is one scene with OM when he flirts with h. Of course H gets super jealous and interferes. As for H's sexual past, he didn't apologize for it and to be honest, it didn't bother me at all. Nothing was descriptive. Also, no condoms were used and h is a virgin, while H is a renewed man-ho. He didn't sleep with anyone for a year, ever since he started to have sexual feelings for h.

Incredible true stories of canine loyalty in the Second World War.

There were dogs involved with the landings, dogs the soldiers could not bear to leave behind and dogs trained to patrol, protect and locate. The dogs sailed with the Merchant Navy and brought their boats into dangerous waters to retrieve the wounded or stranded. They were on land, in the air and on the water during the D-Day operation – playing their special part in every aspect.

Through this inspiring short collection of the true stories of four of these canine heroes the remarkable achievements of the D-Day dogs are brought to life.

Short, heartwarming dog stories By word woman This ebook offers readers a heartwarming look at the heroic deeds of a handful of dogs present during the D-day invasion.I particularly like the details about the dogs' owners before the dogs were donated to the military. Isabel George provides us with just enough information about the military situation to help us appreciate the deeds performed by these four-legged heroes and the men they fought beside.

He is not liable for anything he may do." – Richard Loeb There has been no shortage of shocking crimes and trials that generated frenzied coverage across America, but few can lay claim to “crime of the century” like the murder carried out by Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb in 1924. While studying as young adults at the prestigious University of Chicago, Leopold and Loeb devised a meticulous plot to kidnap and murder a child while managing to get away with ransom money, thereby perpetrating what they considered a “perfect crime.” On May 21, they put their plan in motion and targeted 14 year old Bobby Franks, who had the misfortune of being acquainted with Loeb. Franks was lured into a vehicle and brutally murdered before Leopold and Loeb dumped his body 25 miles away. When attempts at ransom went awry almost immediately, Leopold and Loeb tried to cover their tracks, only to have a special set of eyeglasses link Franks’ murder back to Leopold. Barely less than a week after the murder, the “perfect crime” completely unraveled when Leopold and Loeb were brought in for formal questioning and confessed. The crime was horrific enough, but the trial brought even more attention to the case, and it touched on several crucial issues. Both young men cited the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche as a motivation for attempting to commit the crime and prove they were better than the common man. As Leopold told his own attorney, "The killing was an experiment It is just as easy to justify such a death as it is to justify an entomologist killing a beetle on a pin." Moreover, in addition to the killers’ families hiring renowned defense lawyer Clarence Darrow, the crimes took place at a time when various forms of media were becoming ever more popular, particularly radio and film. Thus, the trial generated more coverage than just about any before it on the way to being billed as the “Trial of the Century,” and Darrow did his best to prevent the boys from suffering the death penalty by citing other factors: “This terrible crime was inherent in his organism, and it came from some ancestor... Is any blame attached because somebody took Nietzsche's philosophy seriously and fashioned his life upon it?... It is hardly fair to hang a 19-year-old boy for the philosophy that was taught him at the university.” Ultimately, the boys were given life sentences + 99 years for the kidnapping, which would lend its name to a memoir written by Leopold. For his part, Darrow would use his increased prestige to participate the following year in the famous Scopes Trial. Leopold and Loeb: The History and Legacy of One of 20th Century America’s Most Notorious Crimes and Trials chronicles the shocking crime and the trial that followed. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about Leopold and Loeb like never before, in no time at all.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. easy to read By JaniceG Well written and analyzed. I had heard their names before, but wasn't sure precisely what crime they committed. Absolutely shocking and unexplainable. One of those cases where it had to be these two personalities together because neither would have done it alone. Quick, easy to read, but thorough.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Short, Yet Informative By Mushy I very much liked this short synopsis. It touched on all the pertinent facts of the crime and the trial, and also a bit of background.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. VERY GOOD By BAARDA This book tells a very interesting but sad story. One of the boys turned out alright. I wonder what happened to James Day.
