In the Southern Baptist community where he grew up, he was a “difficult” child—restless, outspoken, and unconventional, with a flair for the dramatic. But for George Scott Chandler, the journey toward self-discovery and acceptance would lead him to an unexpected place: the fast-paced, high-stakes world of competitive marching and pageantry, where he found a whirlwind of color and movement, song and dance, and expression and creativity. Here, the hyperactivity and artistic temperament that made him the target of bullying over the years would finally allow him to thrive.
Now, as an award-winning choreographer and coordinator for the Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps, Chandler’s passion for the marching arts has allowed him to create, coach, and choreograph performances all over the world—from the Odyssey stage show in Nagoya, Japan, to the set of the hit television show Glee.
Filled with inspiring anecdotes and fascinating insights, FWD March is a true coming-of-age story for anyone who has ever felt alienated, bullied, or misunderstood, as well as fans of competitive marching everywhere.

A "coming of age" story that takes the reader through a whole range of emotions. As I read about the author's struggles, while growing up, because he was perceived as "different", my heart hurt for him. However, he never waivered in his passion and love for music and motion....This internal desire moved him forward to a life of adventure and accomplishments that had me cheering! Although I LOVE music and dance, I am a person of no musical talent whatsoever, was never in the band and had no idea about the world of drum and bugle corps and I still found this book fascinating. If you want a great read about a person willing to take chances, a person driven by something bigger than their situation, a person that took negative and turned for positive....this is a book for you! He shows the reader that with determination and desire you really can accomplish your dreams.....By the way, it would make a great movie, a little bit of "Glee", a little bit of "Pitch Perfect", and a little bit of "Rocky" rolled in to one....triumphing over your circumstances by putting one foot in front of the other!

You know who you are. Scott has changed the color guard and drum corps world with his innovations, imagination, and gift for visual story telling. Every time he has created something that we didn't understand, it was de rigueur within 3 years. This is not a bio or history, but great story telling from a great mind. Fair disclosure: I danced under his tutelage in Spirit '84. Changed my life then, and he was just getting started. He IS an industry maker.
